June 1 marks the beginning of the 2012 hurricane season in the U.S., kicking off six months of the threat of tropical weather affecting the Hampton Roads area.

Meteorologists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predict a near-normal 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, anticipating a 70 percent chance of nine to 15 named storms. Of these, four to eight are projected to strengthen to hurricane status, with one to three of these becoming major hurricanes. Based on the period 1981-2010, the average season boasts 12 named storms, six becoming hurricanes with three becoming major hurricanes.

Hampton Roads most recently experienced severe tropical weather in the form of Hurricane Irene in August 2011. The storm caused widespread damage across the region and forced the mandatory evacuation of more than 200,000 area residents, including Joint Base Langley-Eustis personnel and their families.

Throughout this year’s hurricane season, it is imperative for members of the JBLE community to be prepared in case of severe weather. Whether riding out the storm at home or evacuating to safe haven, the following information can help prepare the community for the worst.

Understanding hurricanes A hurricane is a tropical storm with winds that have reached a constant speed of 74 miles per hour or more. Winds rotate around a relatively calm center, known as the “eye” of the storm. The eye is generally 20 to 30 miles wide , and the storm may extend outward 400 miles. Hurricanes can last for more than two weeks over open water.

In addition to the wind speed, rainfall and lightning, tropical storm systems bring the threat of storm surge, a huge dome of water pushed on shore. When coupled with high tide, the storm surge will be the tide and surge combined. Storm surge is especially dangerous in tidal regions; for example, both Langley Air Force Base and Fort Eustis are situated along rivers that feed into the Chesapeake Bay. This is known as the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane scale: ■ Category 1: Winds of 74-95 mph; minimal damage; 4-5 foot storm surge.

■ Category 2: Winds of 96-111 mph; extensive damage; 6-8 foot storm surge.

■ Category 3: Winds of 111-129 mph; devastating damage; 9-12 foot storm surge.

■ Category 4: Winds of 130-156 mph; catastrophic damage; 13-18 foot storm surge.

■ Category 5: Winds in excess of 157 mph; catastrophic damage; 18 foot or higher storm surge.

While hurricanes represent the most severe of tropical storm systems, less powerful weather may still represent a threat to the area in the form of wind, rain and flooding.

Tropical depressions are the weakest form of system, and feature circular clouds with winds up to 38 miles per hour and moderate rainfall. More powerful tropical storms feature circular clouds with winds between 39 and 73 miles per hour with heavy rainfall.

Watch vs.Warning When monitoring severe weather through meteorological or news media outlets, viewers are alerted to watches and warnings. A tropical storm or hurricane watch alerts residents to the threat of a storm arriving within 36 hours. Tropical storm or hurricane warnings are more urgent, warning of a storm’s arrival within 24 hours.

Prepare your emergency kit In the event of an approaching storm, residents may or may not be ordered to evacuate. Whether riding the storm out or evacuating, having an emergency kit can be the difference between life and death, especially when hunkering down through the storm.

Essential items in an emergency kit include: ■ Water – one gallon per person per day for a minimum of three days ■ Food – at least a three day supply of non-perishable goods ■ Battery-powered or hand-crank radio, and a NOAA weather radio with tone alerts and extra batteries ■ Flashlight ■ First aid kit ■ Whistle to signal for help ■ Dust mask, plastic sheeting, and duct tape to shelter-in-place ■ Moist towelettes, garbage bags, and plastic ties for sanitation ■ Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities ■ Can opener for food ■ Local map When building an emergency kit and emergency action plan, consider the needs of family members who may not be as capable, such as the elderly, disabled, children and family pets. Be sure to include all necessary medications and the name of the doctor who prescribed the medications in the emergency kit.

Riding it out Depending on the severity of the storm, officials may not order mandatory evacuations, in which case you may decide to remain and shelter-in-place. You can shelter at home or in a public shelter.

If sheltering at home, be sure to accomplish the following: ■ Identify how your property location is affected by storm surge and tidal flooding ■ Know the hurricane evacuation routes ■ Secure your outside property, i.e. lawn chairs, lawn ornaments, and anything not anchored to the ground ■ If your home does not have permanent storm shutters, board windows with 5/8inch plywood. Tape does not offer protection!

■ Ensure you have flood insurance If you decide to seek refuge in a public shelter, you must take your emergency kit.

While public shelters provide basic necessities, most do not provide cots, bedding, infant items or items for those with special needs. Most shelters will only accept service animals. Talk to your vet hospital or kennel in advance to get your pet sheltered.

After a rigorous process led by executive search firm Reffett Associates, Ltd, the Army & Air Force Exchange Service’s Board of Directors has selected military and retail veteran Tom Shull to lead the Department of Defense’s oldest and largest Exchange Service.

The announcement also highlighted Shull’s experience as a West Point graduate who received a Harvard University MBA. A military utility assessment held at Fort Benning, Ga., September 2011, has concluded that all participating Soldiers immediately noticed the reduced weight of a prototype, light machine gun and most would prefer it to the current squad automatic weapon used in battle.

The light machine gun, known as the LMG, is part of the Lightweight Small Arms Technologies, or LSAT, program at the Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center at Picatinny Arsenal.

In September 2011, nearly 20 Soldiers participated in a two-week assessment of the LMG. The purpose of that event was to help engineers and developers understand and validate any adjustments or improvements the weapon and its unique ammunition may need from the perspective of the warfighter. Another purpose was to demonstrate its potential impact on mission effectiveness.

The results of the study conducted by the Maneuver Battle Lab at Fort Benning were presented March 13 to a group of military and civilian personnel interested in the program during an LSAT Leadership Familiarization Shoot at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va. Last year’s military utility assessment, or MUA, demonstrated the advantages that the LMG provides for the warfighter, and helped in developing a Capability Development Document , or CDD. A CDD is required before the system can transition to a program of record and enter the engineering and manufacturing development phase of the acquisition life cycle.

More than 25,000 rounds were fired from eight prototype LMG’s during the assessment. Participating Soldiers overwhelmingly preferred the LMG to the M249 SAW, which is the machine gun currently used in Afghanistan.

Fifteen of the 19 Soldiers who participated stated that, if given a choice, they would rather take the LMG to war over the M249.

The study also revealed a significant reduction in the time it took the Soldiers to zero the LMG compared to the M249 SAW. Zeroing the weapon means customizing it for a more accurate shot since

each weapon is unique, and no two are exactly the same.

The Soldiers had to qualify on a known distance range with both the SAW and the LMG. One Soldier repeatedly failed to meet qualification standards while firing the SAW, but passed on the first try with the LMG. Compared to the M249 SAW, the light machine gun is 21.5 pounds (41 percent) lighter for the gunner, and there is a 12 percent reduction in ammunition volume.

This decrease in weight was evident when

all the Soldiers maneuvered the woodland obstacle course faster while carrying the LMG versus the SAW.

Faster course time On average, the course was completed faster by one minute and eleven seconds with the LMG, an increased agility that could be critical on the battlefield. Soldiers attributed the increased mobility when moving and negotiating obstacles to the shortened weapon length, the adjustable butt stock and lighter ammunition. After

Lt. Col. Jack Emerson, the military deputy to the Army chief scientist, fired both weapons and immediately identified the recoil reduction in the LSAT LMG. “The recoil is non-existent,” Emerson said. “I can feel the difference and I’m no weapons expert.”

Tom Caradeschi, chief engineer in Project Manager Maneuver Ammunition System, or PM-MAS, said “the difference is like night and day (and) just the weight of holding the weapon without even thinking of firing.” PM MAS is part of the Program Executive Office for Ammunition.

Because of the findings during the assessment, Maj. Gen. Robert Brown, commanding general for the U.S. Army’s Maneuver Center of Excellence at Fort Benning, signed a letter committing funding for more evaluations of the LMG in a Forward Operational Assessment in Afghanistan.

Protecting your pets Pets are family members too, and should have an emergency kit to keep them safe in the event of a storm. Your pet’s emergency kit should include food, water and medications. It is imperative to keep a copy of your pet’s vaccination records in a waterproof bag.

Pets should wear a collar with a tag that displays the pet’s name and owner contact information. Micro chipping is a great way to identify your pet if they get lost or separated. A photo of you with your pet can also help identify them if separated.

A pet carrier or crate is recommended for evacuation, and a favorite chew toy can make their ordeal a lot easier.

For JBLE personnel with pets who live in

base housing, seeking shelter at an emergency evacuation center or EEC, the installation’s pet-friendly EEC is located at the U.S. Army Reserve Center on Fort Eustis.

This shelter will be open to all JBLE personnel and dependents, including Langley AFB personnel. Note that the shelter will only facilitate dogs and cats, and pets without a shot record will receive vaccinations from an on-site veterinarian.

‘Getting out of dodge’ In the event that you are ordered to evacuate, be sure to know the evacuation routes.

Hampton Roads has established evacuation routes, and has posted blue signs around the area identifying them.

The following routes are designated by the Commonwealth: ■ U.S. Route 460 West ■ U.S. Route 58 West ■ State Route 10 West ■ U.S. Route 17 North ■ U.S. Route 60 West ■ U.S. Route 13 North, north of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.

■ Interstate 64 Note: Commonwealth officials may implement I-64 lane reversal to expedite the flow of traffic out of the area. Be alert, and pay attention to news broadcasts, police officials and roadway signage.

If you are evacuating, follow these tips: 1. Leave early. Avoid traffic delays. If you are evacuating, many others likely are as well.

2. Stay Local. Stay with nearby family who live outside of storm surge areas.

Hotels are also available outside of storm surge areas, but must be booked as early as possible. Public shelters should be a last resort.

3. Listen to local weather reports. Stay updated on current and developing conditions.

Editor’s note: This story is part of an ongoing series highlighting Service members with exceptional experiences throughout their military careers.

The barracks were practically empty, but Airman Kevin Mastin sat alone at his desk, hunched over a college algebra book, studying. All his friends had left to explore the town surrounding Fairchild Air Force Base, Wa. He had to get an A. That was the deal his supervisor had made with him. If Mastin earned an A he could continue to attend school – bringing him one step closer to his dream of becoming an Air Force pilot.

Mastin’s dream began the day he saw the Air Force Thunderbirds perform at Fairchild. Their aerial acrobatics in the F-16 Fighting Falcon left a lasting impression on Mastin, who instantly fell in love with the idea of being a pilot.

“I just felt driven to fly after I saw those planes in the air,” said Col. Kevin Mastin, as he leaned back on the couch in his office and remembered the 1984 airshow that changed his life. “I had to do it.”

Mastin, whose office was full of boxes, was preparing to leave his position as vice commander of the 1st Fighter Wing at Langley Air Force Base, Va. and assume command of a reserve officer training corps detachment. He looked out his window, which provided a clear view of the flightline, and smiled – recalling the series of choices which led him from enlisted Airman to second lieutenant and fighter pilot, to colonel with 30 years of service to his country.

“I knew I wanted to serve my country,” Mastin said. “A lot of my family members had joined the military, so I felt obligated to do the same.”

While a sense of obligation and duty motived Mastin to raise his right hand and enlist, he had no idea where the decision would take him.

“I ultimately wanted to be a Xerox repairman,” Mastin said. “I used to talk with the technician who came to fix the Xerox machine at the school where my Mom worked.

He told me if I wanted to be a repairman, I should join the military and learn a skill.

That sealed the deal for me.”

Mastin joined, fully expecting to serve his country four years, separate and work for

Xerox. However, his love of airplanes, and vision to become a pilot, changed his life’s ambition overnight. Even though there were times he wanted to put the books away and join his friends for a night out, he kept pushing through to his goal.

“I felt discouraged sometimes,” Mastin said. “As an Airman going to college while living in the barracks, I watched and did homework as all my friends got ready to go out. It made me question myself. ‘What am I doing? Why am I doing this?’”

Love of airplanes wasn’t his only motivation. Mastin also said he was driven by a fear of failure. He was so focused on being a pilot that nothing else in life seemed to matter. Looking back, Colonel Mastin said he would tell Airman Mastin to be more patient.

“Be more patient, earlier in your career,” Mastin said. “I missed out on a lot of things at my first assignment because I was so focused on what was next – like you do when you’re young.”

However, even though Mastin wished he’d enjoyed life as an Airman more, he wouldn’t trade in a day of his career.

“I’ve never done this for the money,” he said. “It’s always been for the love of serving our country and the amazing people I’ve met during my career.”

Mastin paused, remembering a time when he served as a pilot with the Thunderbirds. They were preparing to do a show, and Mastin was walking toward the hangar when he saw two people standing outside, waiting for him – and older man and a young boy. The man, a retired Air Force master sergeant, introduced the boy, who said nothing and hid shyly from Mastin.

“The boy was about 9 years old,” Mastin said. “His mom had a boyfriend who used to abuse him.”

Mastin held up his hands, which shook slightly as he continued the story.

“Every time the boy would cry, the boyfriend would take a knife to his hands,” he paused and turned his head, trying to hold back tears. “His hands looked like they had been through meat grinders.”

The boy was incredibly withdrawn, Mastin said. He needed to see that someone cared, so Mastin knelt down and looked the boy in the eye.

“God never gives you more than you can handle,” Mastin said. “So how are we going to take what you’ve been through, get past it and build on it?”

Mastin smiled at the boy, took him by the hand and led him into the hangar where all the Thunderbirds came together to show the boy what it meant to be a part of the team. Mastin smiled again and said for years afterward he stayed in contact with the boy as a pen pal.

“Seeing something like that makes you realize, “holy cow,” there are a lot of terrible things happening in this world - and within our own Air Force,” Mastin said.

“We have Airmen struggling just like that little boy struggled. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in ourselves that we forget the problems of others.”

As an Airman, Mastin said he was singularly focused on studying, getting promoted, getting to work and doing his job.

His loyalty and vision was restricted to his shop and the 92nd Munitions Maintenance Squadron at Fairchild. Today, Colonel Mastin sees the world differently.

“It’s not about getting promoted,” he said.

“Take care of the people around you, and understand that you are a part of one big team. Extend your loyalty beyond the shop to the entire Air Force – to the country.”

Mastin chuckled and shook his head, as he thought back to the type of person he was as an Airman.

“I thought I had all the answers,” he said. “I knew my job, and I lived in my own little world – not realizing what was going on around me.

It wasn’t until the first time Mastin was able to pilot an airplane that he truly felt his world expand.

“I can still remember the sights, smells and sounds of the first time I was strapped into a jet,” he said. “I couldn’t believe it. I kept thinking ‘I’ve made it, I’ve made it.’”

To this day, Mastin said he feels that same excitement every time he gets in a plane to fly. His passion for flying permeates into his leadership and lighthearted approach to life.

“Joker has a wonderful sense of humor, and a terrific outlook on life,” said Col. Trent Edwards, 28th Mission Support Group commander, who has known Mastin for years. “He touches everyone he meets in an incredibly positive way. He really cares about the people and the Air Force.”

Edwards, who referred to Mastin by his call-sign: “Joker,” said he recently met up with him at a conference, where they were able to have dinner, and catch up on old times.

minutes,” Edwards began. “When I returned, I saw – in pure Joker fashion, he had three pilots sitting around him as he mentored them. He is truly one of my best friends. I just think the world of him.”

As Mastin prepares to leave behind his role as 1st FW vice commander, he finds himself thinking on how he would like to be remembered.

“If there was a mark to be left behind, I would want it to be as someone who treated others fairly,” Mastin said. “I want to be known as someone who put people first, ahead of my own career – as someone who never compromised my own integrity. I would retire tomorrow as an Airman basic before I put my own career ahead of the needs of another Airman.”

While Colonel Mastin’s legacy has been forged through a career of hard work, dedication to duty and personal sacrifice, as he prepares for his final flight at Langley, he said if he could, he would leave one message to Airman Mastin as he studied alone in his barracks, dreaming of one day flying as an Air Force pilot.

“There are a lot of things which are going to happen in the next 30 years that you can’t even imagine,” Mastin began.

“As you travel those 30 years, never compromise your integrity. Take care of everyone around you, and especially make sure to take care of your family. Don’t sacrifice your family along the way. And don’t follow your dreams at the expense of others.”

In what is just another milestone in his musical journey, 16-year-old pianist William Hume, the son of a Fort Eustis-based Army colonel, will travel to Dallas, Texas, June 26 to perform on a special, military children-edition of From the Top, a classical music radio and television show celebrating young musicians.

William, son of U.S. Army Col. Robert Hume, Army Capabilities Integration Center Studies and Analysis Division chief, is one of four children of active-duty military parents selected to showcase their talents on the program.

“I’m fortunate to have this opportunity to do something that I love,” William said.

“Doing what I love gives me satisfaction.

It gives me an opportunity to perfect and further my skill set.”

William’s foray into classical music began before he can recall. His mother, Laura, inherited her grandmother’s upright piano when William was one year old.

Growing up with the piano at his disposal, young William became enamored with the instrument, casually pecking at the keys as often as possible.

Noticing what seemed more than a passing interest or phase, Laura suggested piano lessons for William at age 7. He has never looked back.

As he progressed through study, William joined his school orchestra, and participated in the school music program. He enjoyed working alongside other musicians, performing higher-level ensemble work. Outside school walls, William accepted invitations to perform in the community, playing at nursing homes, youth ballets and symphonies, and even taking for-hire gigs at local clubs for brunch performances.

In August 2011, William and his family left Carlisle, Pa., and moved to Yorktown, Va., as his father received assignment orders to Fort Eustis. William immediately searched for opportunities to continue honing his skills. He joined the York High School band as a pianist, and received formal training at the College of William & Mary in nearby Williamsburg. Additional-

ly, he joined several local groups, including Williamsburg’s Tidewater Intergenerational Orchestra and Hampton’s Liberty Academy of the Arts Orchestra, as a soloist.

Both fans of classical music, William and Laura regularly tune in to National Public Radio’s broadcast of From the Top, and William joined the show’s email mailing list. In January, he received an email seeking children of military personnel to audition for a spot on the show.

“It was too perfect of an opportunity to pass up,” William said. “We weren’t really sure what was going to happen, but we decided we might as well try; apply and see what happens.”

The application process included a questionnaire, and required applicants to submit video recordings of their performances. As William had recorded several songs on video in the past, even creating a You-

Tube channel for his videos, he had plenty of material to choose from. William and his parents narrowed his submission down to four pieces of varying genres, hoping to demonstrate his wide range of musical disciplines, and mailed in the package.

It took nearly three months before From the Top made their decision. At the end of April, William received word that he was one of the four performers selected.

“I was shocked. You don’t do things expecting to win, you just hope to win. I’m thankful we gave it a shot, and I’m excited,” he said. “It should be a lot of fun. I’m nervous, naturally. It’s the first time I’ll have performed for an audience this big.”

William said he is preparing for the big performance by practicing. He selected Romantic composer Johannes Brahms’ rhapsody, Opus 79, No. 1.

was more mature. It’s very complex, featuring several emotions. It’s an ideal piece to play for people, because it lets me showcase my abilities,” William said. “I play it once each day to keep it under my fingers.”

Laura said the performance on From the Top is the result of her son’s hard work, and will be a bright spot on his future resumes. More immediately though, it will be a nice addition to his college applications. William is considering attending several music schools, including the University of Rochester’s Eastman School of Music in New York, the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Oberlin, Ohio, or Johns Hopkins University’s Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Md. “This is a gateway for William. It’s just another example of him setting goals and focusing on them,” Laura said. “All the different things he’s doing will help him develop not only his musical skills, but his sense of self and person.”

“My main goal is to become a better musician – the best musician possible. I love music enough to want to make a career out of it,” William said. “I’d like to become a teacher of music. You build a respect for teachers in their ability to connect and instruct students in music. I’d like to do more work with other musicians in ensembles and orchestras, perhaps even being a composer and collaborating with others.”

William’s father said he has been “very fortunate” to have found so many good teachers along the way, regardless of the family’s travels.

“The fact that we’ve bounced around is actually been beneficial. Like with all military kids, being bounced around has a downside, but it exposes kids and families to different things,” the colonel said.

“We’ve tried to take advantage, and look for opportunities for all three of our sons.

“Kids are all a little different. We’ve invested in his passion to provide opportunities for him, and it’s well worth the investment to fuel any passion,” he continued. “At the end of the day, we’re very proud of William. He works very hard at what he does.”

The special military children-edition of From the Top is expected to air in Fall 2012.

The Army and Air Force are committed to developing 1 billion watts of renewable energy on their installations by 2025, senior leaders from both services announced May 23.

The plan marks the latest milestone in a multi-year endeavor to find ways to make the military more energy efficient, said Katherine Hammack, the assistant secretary of the Army for installations, energy and environment, and Terry Yonkers, the assistant secretary of the Air Force for installations, environment and logistics.

One gigawatt, a unit of power equal to 1 billion watts, can power about 250,000 homes, Hammack explained.

Energy security drives the initiatives, Hammack said, adding that increased usage of renewable energy – such as solar power – on military installations would enable them to operate even if local power grids go down.

“Right now, the bases operate off of a nationwide electric grid, which, as populations grow, is getting aged and vulnerable,” Hammack said. “This is a move toward distributed energy where you’re generating (it) at the point of use.”

The Army Corps of Engineers will work with the two services to assess land and resources and to determine energy transmission capabilities, Hammack said.

As the technology develops, she said, renewable energy steps will include the installation of solar paneling on military base buildings and vehicle garages, and dual-usage of the panels as land buffers.

Biofuels will be a behind-the-scenes game changer for the Air Force, according to Yonkers, who lauded the seminal research of alternative fuels at WrightPatterson Air Force Base, Ohio.

“These biofuels don’t produce the kind of soot that conventional crude oil-derived fuels produce,” Yonkers said, adding that this results in a cooler-running engine, which reduces metal fatigue and increases engine life.

“If you can reduce the temperature in the combustion chamber of an engine by as little as a hundred degrees, you can get 10,000 hours or more on those parts that

compose that engine,” Yonkers said.

As the United States continues to seek ways to reduce dependency on imported oil, biofuels could play a large part in the transition while reducing the cost to taxpayers, he said.

“Maintenance costs will go down substantially. We can keep those engines (online) much longer and the overall cost of doing business with the Air Force goes down,” Yonkers said.

Private-sector financing will be the linchpin of the services’ energy endeavors through power purchase agreements, enhanced use leasing, energy savings performance contracts and utility energy savings contracts, Yonkers explained.

New sources of clean energy will vary among installations, he said, and will include solar, wind, biomass and geothermal developments.

The desired end result of these advances, Yonkers said, is to “reduce demand, increase supply and change the culture of how Airmen and Soldiers consider energy.”

The Army will host the Army-Air Force Energy Forum July 12 in Arlington, Va.

U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command’s deputy commanding general highlighted the importance of those who provide support to Soldiers after Army life when he recognized ďŹ ve Wounded Warrior mentors for their service May 23.

Lt. Gen. John Sterling presented Tony Nadal, Tony Ross, Glenn Rother, T.C. Smith and Steven Bay with certiďŹ cates of appreciation and TRADOC coins during a ceremony at the Fort Eustis Club, where he thanked them for their dedication and effort. “Being able to recognize these guys is tremendous because of what they do,â€? Tony Ross, who previously served as the deputy director of the Armed Forces Retirement Home after retiring from the Army. “I welcome the opportunity to work as a mentor, and I will continue to help Soldiers.�

Earlier this year, retired Col. Tony Nadal, Wounded Warrior Mentors Program director, began the Wounded Warrior Mentor Program at the Wounded Warrior Transition Unit at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va. Nadal’s inspiration to start the program came from the West Point class of 1958. This class organized a mentoring program at Walter Reed for Wounded Soldiers and as a mem-

ber of that class he wanted Soldiers at JBLE to have the same support. “We are attempting to help Soldiers in the process of planning their future, to include assistance with developing interviewing skills, resume writing and career choices,� Nadal said. “All of us have had successful military and civilian careers, and our experience is helpful to them.�

Currently, the program consists of 15 retired military ofďŹ cers and senior noncommissioned ofďŹ cers who volunteer their time to assist Soldiers in reaching a new and meaningful future once their military career concludes; however, according to Nadal, the program is in need of volunteers because of the waiting list of Soldiers who are seeking mentors.

The hot summer sun beat down on the field as the official blew the whistle. The young man took off like a flash of lightning as he sprinted down the 100-yard stretch of track, chased by the cheers of encouragement from his teammates. When he reached the end, covered in sweat, he handed the 17-pound pipe he held high above his head to his teammate who dashed the opposite direction with equal speed.

This is how it went until each teammate ran the 100-yard dash twice, while holding the pipe in the air, and this was only the first of seven events the team ran in hopes to earn the top place at the Squadron Challenge.

“The challenge is a good blend of strength, cardio, core exercises, plyometrics and ballistic action,” said John Hickok, the Shellbank Fitness Center director.

“It’s a great way to test your fitness.”

The fourth annual Squadron Challenge was hosted by the Shellbank Fitness Center in coordination with Tidewater Fitness, as one of the many

activities held for May Fitn ness Month.

More than 20 teams, of aat least five members, from squadro ons around Langley Air Force Base, Vaa., competed against each other.

The challenge’s events were based on the circuit and sports ttraining that Tidewater Fitness offers, bu ut the events change yearly to ensure th hat the teams cannot prepare ahead of tim me, and also to offer a wide variety of ch hallenges.

This year’s events inclluded a canoe pull, a flexed-arm han ng and even a tire flip. For this challengee, two members of each team took tu urns flipping a 300-pound tire, nicknameed “Big Bertha,” for a total of 160 y yards. These types of challenges were designed to challenge teams’ overall fi fitness in different way that Hickok considered a nice change of pace from sstandard Air Force physical training.

“Regular P.T. can get monotonous,” said Hickok. “The Squadro on Challenge is not only better physicaally, but it’s mentally stimulating.”

Not only does the challeenge offer a great opportunity to break the monotony of everyday P.T., but it aalso gives the

participants a chance to test themselves.

“It’s important for Service members to test their limits,” said Staff Sgt. Thomas Baah, Shellbank Fitness Center facility manager. “Service members need to test their strength and fitness to see if they are fit to fight.”

In addition to fitness, the challenge also tested their camaraderie and teamwork, and served as a morale booster, said Hickok.

The 633rd Contracting Squadron came out on top at the end of the challenge, winning the bragging rights and pride that come with the title.

“Events like this help us celebrate our daily commitment to fitness excellence and it’s a great way to get together with other squadrons and have fun,” said Senior Airman Graham Stoudt, 633rd Contracting Squadron contracting specialist.

Baah urges Air Force personnel not only to work toward fitness excellence in May, but every month of the year.

“Service members shouldn’t look at P.T. and dieting as something they have to do,” he said. “With all of the benefits that they provide, it’s something that Service members should want to do.”

Brig. Gen.Thomas James, the Armor School commandant and Chief of Armor, is making a push for more Cavalry scouts in Ranger School.

This is partly due to the operations-tempo in Afghanistan and Iraq throughout the past 10 years.

Now that the Armor School has planted new roots in the Maneuver Center of Excellence, it has a new mission: get more Cavalry scouts into Ranger School.

Facing a shortage of Ranger-qualified Soldiers in the 19 “Delta” military occupational specialty, Brig. Gen. Thomas James, the Armor School commandant and chief of Armor, has made a push for more to close a significant gap, officials said. The Army is only filling 17 percent of its authorized slots.

Part of that is due to the high operations tempo in Afghanistan and Iraq throughout the past 10 years, said Sgt. Maj. Gregory Proft from the chief of Armor’s office.

Now, the organization wants to heighten awareness and get the Army’s top Cavalry scouts -- specialists, sergeants and staff sergeants, in particular -- more interested in earning a Ranger tab.

“They’re the future of our Army,” Proft said. “Our leaders have to identify the windows when they can send their guys to school, because the opportunity exists.

But it’s also important that leadership selects the right Soldier. Leaders must be able to identify the guy who’s motivated and intelligent with the potential and drive to complete the course.”

Cavalry scouts can reap many professional and personal benefits by graduating from Ranger School, Armor officials said.

It broadens a Soldier’s military parameters and knowledge while opening up assignment possibilities for top performers and high achievers in the career field. In addition, only a Ranger-coded noncommissioned officer can serve as an instructor in the Ranger Training Brigade.

Proft said the Army’s structure has evolved toward a combined-arms maneuver fight. Armor and Cavalry Soldiers are now routinely assigned to Armored, Infantry and Stryker brigade combat teams.

“You’re going to learn how to maneuver with the Infantry. It’s made us a better asset for both sides and made us all a better fighting force,” said 1st Sgt. Norbert Neumeyer of B Troop, 1st Squadron, 16th Cavalry Regiment, who graduated from Ranger School three years ago at age 41.

“We need to pick out people who are hungry and set them up for success. If a Soldier is hungry, you’ve got to feed that fire.

It’s going to make you more marketable and able to fit in more places. It’s an opportunity we should not pass up.”

said. Soldiers have the option of attending the Warrior Training Center’s PreRanger Course on Harmony Church, which is in place to help curb the attrition rate at Ranger School.

“You have the ability to get acclimated here, and there’s less chance for failure,” Neumeyer said. “You can train up in the environment you’ll be going to school at.

I went in knowing I was coming out with a Ranger tab. I made that clear to myself and my unit.”

Infantrymen, Cavalry scouts and tankers all must be aligned on the modern battlefield, which is constantly in flux and full of hybrid threats, said Sgt. 1st Class Mason Livingston of G Troop, 5th Squadron, 15th Cavalry Regiment. He graduated Ranger School in 2008 and said it builds stronger leaders with more credibility in the ranks.

“Our leadership needs to recognize the potential in Soldiers,” he said. “But if you’re going to question yourself or have a quitter’s mentality, you’re not going to make it.

“I thought I was a good leader before I went to Ranger School, and it was a reality check. There’s a spectrum of leadership that goes there. You can be a private first class or a major, and both can be in charge of the other during the different scenarios in very adverse conditions.

If you don’t come out a better leader after that, something’s wrong.”

The MiCare system allows patients to contact their health care teams for nonurgent questions without the hassle of phone tag and waiting for a provider to call back. Therefore, instead of having one singular point of contact, there is a medical team answering patient questions.

Russo said that not everything requires an appointment. There are a lot of questions and concerns our patients have for non-urgent medical care, such as medication reďŹ lls, status of referrals, general health questions or requests for appointments.

The health care team provides answers to patientsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; questions within 72 hours via an e-mail alerting that an answer is waiting on the MiCare Portal. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As the fastest growing medical treatment facility in the Air Force medical service, we recognize the need of the large beneďŹ ciary population,â&#x20AC;? U.S. Army engineers were recognized for their collaborative efforts with small businesses to develop a transportable 100kW generator that is 3,150 pounds lighter than those currently in theater.

Members of the Research, Development & Engineering Command’s Communications-Electronics Research, Development and Engineering Center received an Army Small Business Innovation Research, Phase II Achievement Award at the Women’s Memorial Center, Arlington National Cemetery, April 26 for their work with Spectrum Research Corporation of Albany, N.Y. The effort resulted in a generator light and compact enough to be towed by a Humvee, yet sturdy enough to be transported off road. The towable 100kW is a load following variable speed generator set. This potentially allows for a 20 percent fuel reduction and mitigates wet stacking, which is deposit buildup that clogs the exhaust system resulting in serious damage to the generator.

CERDEC’s Command, Power & Integration directorate managed the project, providing technical expertise and guidance to spectrum Research Corp. regarding Army field requirements. The research and development project represents a breakthrough capability for mobile tactical power applications that could be used to support command outposts and expeditionary camps, said Edmund A. Nawrocki, leader for CERDEC CP&I’s Advanced Electromechanical Team.

“Our goal was to improve fuel efficiency, reduce the weight and size, improve power quality and reduce the number of generator sets used in the field. This generator could support medical units, kitchens, command posts, base camps and disaster relief efforts. It’s plug-andplay, so it drastically reduces training time,” said Edmund A. Nawrocki, leader for CERDEC CP&I’s Advanced Electromechanical Team.

“This effort is highly innovative on many levels,” Nawrocki said. “It features a hybrid electric architecture that reduces strain on the engine – an energy storage subsystem which provides

uninterruptable power, until the engine catches up. The intelligent variable engine speed improves fuel-conversion efficiency and the electromechanical components will help extend mission times, while reducing emissions. It will not only help reduce operational costs, but it will also translate to fewer Soldier casualties associated with fuel runs.”

Product Manager Force Sustainment Systems’ Force Provider hopes to evaluate the towable generator this summer during a demonstration at their Base Camp Integration Lab at Fort Devens, Mass. Force Provider is the Army’s base camp life support system, managed by PM FSS. Responsible for setting up and powering Expeditionary Base Camps, PM FSS represents the largest single user of 60kW tactical quiet generators. The system is of interest because it could work well as a mobile and efficient power source for smaller base camps, combat outposts and stand-alone dining facilities, said William M. Singleton, lead engineer for Force Provider’s Combat Field Service Equipment Team.

“PM FSS would want to evaluate the performance, utility and suitablilty of this type of generator set in a realistic Forward Operating Base setting. Once we are contacted by CERDEC regarding possible dates and have received a formal test plan, we can schedule it in around other ongoing testing and training activities at the BCIL,” Singleton said.

The runners could not have asked for a nicer morning, May 19, as 90 children and adults lined up to participate in the 2012 Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Armed Forces Kids Run and 5K at Fort Eustis, Va. Children, and their families, ran in honor of Armed Forces Day- joining thousands of other children across the globe on Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps installations. Participants had the choice of running a half-mile or mile, and adults participated in a 5K run.

This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s race was special for Yanixa Guerrero-Rivera and Jaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Naye Dean, as children who participated in and ďŹ nished the 5K race. Both said they were â&#x20AC;&#x153;very tired, but had a lot of fun.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have been waiting a long time for something like this,â&#x20AC;? said Kimberly Reels, whose son Brandon participated in the event. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Brandon views running as his ďŹ rst love. This was fantastic.â&#x20AC;?

This year marked the 26th year of the global event. Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Kids Run began in 1986 with 3,800 children participating in the ďŹ rst run in Spokane, Wash. Over the past 24 years, 198,000 children ages 5 to 13 have participated in the run.

U.S. Army soldiers placed more than 260,000 flags in front of gravestones at Arlington National Cemetery, May 24 as part of the “Flag’s In” tradition preceding Memorial Day weekend.

Soldiers from the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) and 289th Military Police Company from Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, Va., participated in the annual ritual to honor fallen veterans. During about

a three-hour period, the Soldiers place flags in front of more than 260,000 graves and about 7,300 niches at the cemetery’s columbarium.

Each year for the past 40 years, the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment has honored America’s fallen heroes by placing American flags before the gravestones and niches of service members buried at both Arlington National Cemetery and the U.S. Soldier’s and Airmen’s Home National Cemetery just prior to Memorial Day.

Weapons school integrates cyber warfare BY 1ST LT. KEN LUSTIG 99TH AIR BASE WING PUBLIC AFFAIRS

Every day, an invisible war is being fought on the world’s communication networks - a war the Air Force’s cyberspace warriors are training to win.

This June, eight students will complete the very first Cyber Weapons Instructor Course, taught at the 328th Weapons Squadron of the U.S. Air Force Weapons School, and join the ranks of the Air Force’s weapons officers. The WIC students are primarily cyber warfare officers, but the course also accepts qualified applicants from the intelligence, space & missile and engineer career fields.

Weapons officers are tactical experts trained in the art of battlespace dominance who instruct the Air Force’s instructor corps and serve as advisors to military leaders at all levels.

Although this cyber class is the school’s first, Maj. Brent Wells, 328th Weapons Squadron director of operations for the Cyber WIC, says the graduates’ accomplishment will ultimately reduce the distinction between cyber and traditional operational specialties.

“Although we ‘deep dive’ into the cyber curriculum during the first phase of our academics, what we’re really trying to get across to our students is this: You’re not a cyber officer first, not an intel or space officer first - you’re a weapons officer and your job is to provide advice and counsel to our leaders and be that expert on all Air Force capabilities,” Wells said.

“The purpose of this course is to refine these officers’ cyber skills and round them out by teaching them to be expert instructors, problem solvers, leaders and tacticians, ultimately teaching them how to integrate the cyber piece with the entire spectrum of Air Force and Joint capabilities,” he said.

To this end, all of the approximately 115 students from the USAFWS’ 18 weapons squadrons - each specializing in one of 24 ‘platforms’ (battle concepts or weapons systems) - are brought together at regular intervals and must rely on each other for critical knowledge and coordinated planning. After the first third of the course, the academics broaden to give all students a clear picture of how all of their capabilities are used in conjunction, both within the Air Force and with those of the joint services.

Wells said that the addition of the cyber WIC is part of a bigger Air Force effort to further integrate and operationalize its cyber capabilities.

“In the past, we have often thought of cyber in terms of monitoring networks and responding to trouble tickets - a maintenance mindset,” he said. “But as our adversaries become increasingly effective and sophisticated at engaging in the cyber realm, it is clear that the cyber domain has become a key terrain of the battlefield, and we have to move beyond the old way of thinking.”

Lt. Col. Bob Reeves, 328th Weapons Squadron commander, says the school’s space course was created in 1996; it addressed but did not deeply delve into cyber operations. The new cyber WIC was created in part to help the Air Force take its cyber capability in new directions.

“We want our graduates to transform and inspire our nation’s combat power, to bring the cyber piece to operational planning, but also to help build the cyber force to recognize that they are part of the overall picture and a capability we are providing to the combatant commander.”

Reeves said the lessons learned at weapons school are applied across the force.

“It is not enough just to train our weapons officers. We are taking the lessons learned from our exercises and planning, and feeding that innovation into other exercises and even real-world operations where those techniques and tactics can be validated,” he said. “We take what works and export it.”
