Throughout my career, I’ve kept a mental list of characteristics I’ve admired from other officers and NCOs with whom I’ve worked: subject matter expertise, assertiveness, cool under pressure, quick thinker, grounded, etc.

There is one leadership characteristic that I think is the most important of all, and that is humility.

We often equate humility with low self-worth, hesitation and shyness. That is not humility. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, humility or the act of being humble means “not arrogant, nor proud.”

Most leaders do not set out to be arrogant leaders; however, the fine line between subject-matter expert and arrogance can be blurry. Arrogant leaders are “know-italls;” they know what is best and do not need the advice of others. On the other hand, humble leaders acknowledge their own strengths and weaknesses and are open to seeking the advice and counsel of others. This openness to others’ ideas also helps leaders to learn and grow by transforming their weakness into strength.

Humility allows leaders to value the contributions of others to their success. By welcoming input from subordinates, leaders can build a stronger unit, as subordinates can recognize their role in the success of the mission and their value to the unit. This, in-turn, gives subordinates the confidence to approach their leaders with honest opinions and without the fear of rejection.

Merriam-Webster offers another meaning of humble: “in a spirit of deference and submission.” This definition reminds me of the Air Force core value, “service before self.” As leaders, we are servants to the Air Force mission. Its goals are our goals. Humble leaders make sure

that their actions support the mission and the goals of the Air Force.

Humble leaders are also servants to their fellow Airmen – the Airmen who accomplish the mission. In order to be effective, leaders must earn the loyalty and dedication and respect of the people through compassion and empathy. A leader should never forget the people. Eugene B. Habecker said the following in “The Other Side of Leadership.”

“The true leader serves. Serves people. Serves their best interests, and in doing so will not always be popular, may not always impress. But because true leaders are motivated more by loving concern than a desire for personal glory, they are willing to pay the price.”

Leaders know that no matter how high their position, they need a strong foundation. This solid foundation is humility. I urge leaders to be humble. When we are humble, we allow others to participate and seek their advice.

When we are humble, we grow as individuals and leaders, and our organization grows as well. When we are humble, we value our people and have empathy and compassion toward them.

As part of a members overall medical readiness, we make sure that the member is dentally ready. The last thing we want is for someone to be worried about a broken tooth when they should be focused on their mission, either at home station or downrange. To that end, we performed more than 115,000 procedures at 37,000 patient visits in the past year, and dentally cleared more than 1,500 real-world and 3,000 ORE/ORI deployers.

In what ways does your training at home station prepare you for deployments?

The dental mission in a deployed location is very similar to the mission at home station; so mastering your daily duties is the best preparation. Squadron members also deploy into non-dental roles; so each member must be mentally and physically prepared to serve wherever needed.

What challenges does your unit currently face and how is the unit overcoming them?

The major challenge continues to be maintaining full operational capability while dealing with ongoing renovation of the facility. We are optimistic that a new project to renovate the remainder of the dental clinic will start soon. So the sound of saws and hammers will continue to be part of our life.

Army divers conduct real-world training in Arkansas

The 86th Engineer Dive Detachment, Special Troops Battalion, 7th Sustainment Brigade, received an initial inquiry in March from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Little Rock District, requesting support to service one of its hydroelectric dams on the Arkansas River.

The Armyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s engineer divers jump at training opportunities such as this and strive to support USACE sites all over the United States.

Utilizing jobs from USACE as a resource to train on unit capabilities provides the equally beneďŹ cial aspect of a threatening environment that no artiďŹ cial training evolution can imitate. Fresh off a ďŹ ve-week mobilization to the USACE Portland District, a mission involving extensive underwater construction support to eight hydroelectric dams throughout Oregon and Washington, the engineer divers of the 86th embraced another opportunity to support USACE. In early June after months of preparation, the 86th mobilized 13 divers and three equipment containers to Fort Smith, Ark., for three weeks in support of the USACE Little Rock

District. The scope of work required pumping more than 300 cubic yards of mud out of a hydroelectric turbine intake 70 feet below the surface. In order to accomplish the mission, divers would have to conduct an initial engineer reconnaissance of both the upstream and downstream sides of the dam.

The intake and outtake are massive shafts that, when open, move millions of gallons of water per second in order to spin the turbine and produce power. In order to begin repairs, the hydroelectric unitâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s shaft needed to be dewatered by lowering gates on both sides of the turbine with the ultimate goal of sealing and dewatering the unit.

Upon arrival at the job site, initial underwater inspections revealed that much more debris ďŹ lled the shaft than initially suggested. These initial inspections served as a challenging deterrent to the missionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s desired end state. However, in the spirit of the Engineer branch motto, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Essayons!â&#x20AC;? (Let us try) the 86th elected to drive on with the mission.

The team conducted numerous daily dives averaging 100-minute dives 60 to 80 feet below the surface. The unitâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dive supervisors beneďŹ ted from the experience of supervising in-wa-

ter decompression dives which require careful management of the diverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time and decompression schedules.

Equally important to the training value of the mission were the lessons learned by the divers in operating and staging a large pump underwater.

In order to clear the gate slot areas of the shaft, the 86th utilized the largest possible pump that could be safely operated by a pair of working divers. Normally this pump is used in the Gulf of Mexico with the purpose of salvaging sunken drilling equipment. The pump had to be positioned with a crane and then inspected by the divers.

After the divers conďŹ rmed the pump was properly staged on the riverbed, they proceeded to hoist extremely heavy hose out to the mouth of the shaft. Once properly positioned with the end of the hose buried in the debris, the divers notiďŹ ed the dive station to switch the pump on and began the arduous process of dragging the pump back and forth, sucking up as much debris as possible in their allotted dive time. At 3,700 gallons per minute of suction power, the pump proved to be an extremely effective tool for clearing the shaft.

McDonald Army Health Center has recently experienced several requests for immediate duplication of personal health records. On average, MCAHC has a queue of about 415 records monthly to be copied with limited staff devoted to this mission.

Therefore requests for immediate duplication of records are usually not possible (valid emergencies noted).

MCAHC recognizes the importance of requests regarding duplication of medical records. MCAHC will accept individual requests and comply, based on Army Regulation 40-66, to carefully protect patient privacy and produce copies of the health record. In accordance with AR 40-66 and DOD Financial Management Regulation, Volume 11A, Chapter 4, and AR 25-55, beneďŹ ciaries are entitled to one free copy,

with all additional copies being assessed with an administrative fee of $13.25, plus a copy fee of 15 cents per page. Upon receipt of request, the Patient Administration Division, Release of Information section, medical record technician will act on the request within 30 days after receipt of the request by (1) informing the individual of the acceptance and providing the access requested, or (2) providing the individual with a written denial.

In the event the request is for access to protected health information that is not maintained or accessible to the facility onsite, then MCAHC will act on the individualâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s request for an accounting no later than 60 days from the receipt of such a request.

Capt. Terrence Parker, a 34-year old Adjutant General Corps ofďŹ cer from Orlando, Fla., and currently assigned to the 7th Sustainment Brigadeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s S-1 section, is this weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Resolute Warrior Spotlight.

His work as the brigade adjutant requires savvy human resource skills and a ďŹ&#x201A;exible and tenacious spirit.

Enlisting in the Army ďŹ rst as an armored crewman in 1996 and later switching to the ďŹ eld of multimedia specialist, Captain Parkerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s natural inclination to lead from the front led him to the path of becoming a commissioned ofďŹ cer.

In December 2006, that is precisely what he did. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Throughout my life, I was told I had leadership potential,â&#x20AC;? said the easy going and friendly Soldier from his ofďŹ ce in the brigadeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s headquarters. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When I was a Boy Scout (he achieved Eagle Scout) and during my time in Navy JROTC (Junior Reserve OfďŹ cer Train-

ing Corps) at Maynard Evans High School in Orlando, this is what I had consistently been told.â&#x20AC;?

The Joint Base Langley-Eustis AfricanAmerican Heritage Council is lending a helping hand to local high school students this school year by hosting a base-wide school supplies drive, which runs through Aug. 31.

Collection boxes are placed at several high-trafďŹ c areas around Langley for people to donate new materials, such as pens and pencils, backpacks, paper, and books.

Donations will be accepted daily from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

"The drive used to be run by the [633rd] Medical Group, but this year the council stepped up to lead the project because we want to expand it to the entire base," said project manager Staff Sgt. Amira Boyd.

"Our past drives raised thousands of pounds of supplies. We're hoping to continue that trend."

Sergeant Boyd explained that donations will primarily beneďŹ t high school students, as the council members want to help lay the foundations for local students to continue their education into college and beyond. n addition to donating supplies, council members will visit the schools for motivational speaking events to instill the impor-

tance of education in students.

"We want to show the students that the military is there for them and wants to give back for all the support they've given us," said Sergeant Boyd, 633 MDG's cost center manager. "We see a need in our community and we want to help. We pride ourselves on being a positive inďŹ&#x201A;uence."

Staff Sgt. Shelia Fitzgerald, co-program director, said, "It's a great thing for us to be able to do, and we feel really good about the impact we are hoping to make."

Here's what you need to know to help local high school students in need: All donated items must be new, and should include: paper, pens, pencils, backpacks, notebooks, calculators, binders, folders, highlighters, rulers, divider tabs, thesauruses and dictionaries, and agenda books or planners.

Lt. Col. Shelly Black, deputy chief of Headquarters Air Combat Command’s Personnel Recovery Division, received the 2011 Federally Employed Women Military Meritorious Service Award July 18 at the 42nd National Training Program in Philadelphia for her significant contributions in highlighting and improving women’s roles in the military.

Colonel Black’s pioneering efforts in Air Force combat search and rescue made a significant impression on more than 1,000 members of the rescue community. As the first female rescue squadron commander and the first woman to lead a rescue squadron in combat, she paved the way for future Air Force women to follow.

Colonel Black determined that combat rescue female aircrew members needed a sisterhood, and created and distributed a “women’s flight” coin for all female rescue aircrew personnel. Recognizing the low retention among women flyers, she starred in an Air Force “Do Something Amazing” video, demonstrating that women can be successful aviators, talented mothers and wives. In addition, she led a two-ship HH-60 formation flight to Taji Air Base, Iraq, where she briefed an Iraqi wing commander on the combat rescue mission, achieving a

dual effect of educating the Iraqi helicopter community on the combat rescue mission and making strides for Iraqi women.

“I’ve spent my career trying not to be the ‘woman pilot,’ but rather just a pilot. Women have come a long way in the Air Force, but we still have a long way to go in breaking these traditionally male-dominated missions and being the best in our jobs,” Colonel Black said. “Women have a ton to offer the Air Force, and our leadership and dedication is unique and valuable.

“I am humbled to receive this award on behalf of the all the men and women in the rescue community, but most especially the deployed crews who are sav-

ing lives day in and day out,” she added.

The award is presented to military members or Department of Defense civilian employees who have distinguished themselves by making a significant contribution to their country in the area of civil, human rights, race relations, equal opportunity, affirmative action, human resources, and public service. They must also foster support and understanding of the armed services among and between minority and nonminority members of the military and civilian population of the nation with a better understanding between the races both in the armed forces and the private sector.

Dental Assistant program â&#x20AC;&#x201C; two days a week, 10 to 12 month program where selected volunteers learn to be dental assistants and can work for civilian dentists after they complete the program.

Summer Youth Volunteer program is ongoing until the end of August for military dependents from 13 to 17 with a military ID. Although the teens may work in various locations on base, many volunteer in the hospital.

They met their favorite Sesame Street characters, splashed in the water play area, rode many rides and sang along with their favorite songs. They also squealed on the rapid rollercoaster, talked freely with their friends on the cozy train ride and walked

through the beautiful foliage. Although the summer program is slowly coming to an end, adventures continue throughout the school year. The SAS program is now open for enrollment for the Before and After School Program for the 2011-2012 school year.

$LU )RUFH \RXWK KRQRUHG GXULQJ FHUHPRQ\ DW 3HQWDJRQ Breanna Bowman and Shamera Stewart were honored at the Pentagon Aug. 3 during the 2011 Air Force Youth of the Year Award Ceremony hosted by Lt. Gen. Charles B. Green, Surgeon General of the Air Force.

Ms. Stewart was selected as the Joint Base Langley-Eustis Youth of the Year. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Derrick D. Stewart. She attends Woodside High School where she maintains a 4.0 GPA. Ms. Stewart is involved in a variety of community activities including the Mayor’s Youth Commission, Langley Federal Credit Union Coats for Kids; and volunteers at the Youth Center and Red Cross. Ms. Stewart is a member of the Drama and Rush Clubs and plans on attending Old Dominion University to study sports medicine.

Ms. Bowman was selected as the Air National Guard Youth of the Year, where she competed against Air National GuardYouth from across the country. She is the daughter of Capt. Pamela Garner and Chief Master Sergeant Angus Garner of the 192nd Fighter Wing at Joint Base Langley-Eustis. Ms. Bowman attends Gloucester High School where she maintains a 4.5 GPA and served as the freshman class president, captain of the girls varsity basketball team and member of the cross country and junior varsity softball teams. Ms. Bowman is also a member of the debate team. She volunteers with the Red Cross and recently assisted with the disaster team to serve victims affected by the tornados in Gloucester County. She volunteers at the Langley Hospital as well as in the Airman and Family Youth Programs Office for the 192 FW. Ms. Bowman plans to attend Stanford University and study political science and law.
