Fit to bite: Dental readiness for Airmen, Soldiers

Every week new Airmen arrive to here to become part of a lethal force known as the U.S. Air Force. Staying fit to fight is driven into every service member from the time they enter basic training to the time they are out of the military.

Part of being fit to fight is keeping all parts of the body ready to deploy anytime, anyplace, including dental health.

Members of JBLE have benefits they can use to make sure their teeth remain clean, stay in Classification 1 or 2 and ready to be called to a mission without any hesitation or hindering.

Langley Air Force Base and Fort Eustis have clinics to service active duty members with top notch dental care. The Langley Dental Clinic, Ft. Eustis hospital dental clinic and Tignor Dental Clinic are available for service members.

“Proper oral hygiene helps maintain overall fitness for duty and remain in a deployable status,” said U.S. Army Sergeant 1st Class Michelle Newman, NCO in charge Tignor Dental Clinic. “Not only that, but teeth that function properly allows good nutrition, contributing to overall health.”

Service members are encouraged to use proper hygiene when it comes to dental health.

“It’s dental recommendation that Airmen brush and floss every day, brush twice for at least 2 minutes, and floss at least once a day,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Morreyah Snyder, 633rd Medical Group NCO in charge of the Air Force Dental Readiness Assurance Program.

“Make sure you’re conscious of what you’re eating too because those can add to the higher risk factors of getting cavities and what not.”

JBLE service members are classified under Class 1, 2, 3 or 4 for their dental health. Class 1 and 2 are the groups that most service members should fall under, this means that they are deployable and their teeth aren’t going to cause them any issues.

Class 3 means the member cannot deploy because treatment is needed for an issue that could cause an emergency within a six month timeframe. Class 4 is unknown and is typically given to new Airmen who just arrived on base, but can also mean an Airman may be overdue for a checkup.

“Soldiers who fail to exercise good oral hygiene are likely to develop oral disease(s) and risk becoming unfit for duty, which in turn impacts unit readiness,” said Newman Being overdue can cause problems for a service member if they have an issue that needs

“They could end up having something that turns into an emergency and now they’re a Class 3 and we could’ve prevented it months ago by them just coming in,” said U.S. Air Force Technical Sgt. Amanda Leak, 633rd MDG NCO in charge of Records and Reception.

Although the clinics have systems and people who are able to track which Airmen are due for exams or treatments, it’s ultimately the service members’ responsibility to stay current on any appointments.

Not staying current can have a negative effect on a unit if their member ends up needing emergency care because of negligence or can’t perform their job.

TRADOC top two reflect on leading the ‘architect of the Army’

U.S. ARMY TRAINING AND DOCTRINE COMMAND PUBLIC AFFAIRS JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, VA.

U.S. Army Gen. David G. Perkins, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command commanding general, will pass the TRADOC colors to Gen. Stephen J. Townsend March 2 marking the completion of Perkins’ nearly fouryear assignment leading the Army’s major training command.

In a separate ceremony on March 1, TRADOC deputy commander Lt. Gen. Sean B. MacFarland will also bid farewell as he retires after 37 years of Army service.

Following Perkins’ retirement March 9, TRADOC and the Army will have lost a combined 75 years of experience between the two leaders.

Perkins took command of the storied organization March 14, 2014, and since that time has led the charge for Solider and civilian employee development, edu-

cation and training at all levels.

“After coming out of more than a decade of military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, we wanted to recognize there are lessons to be learned from that experience,” Perkins explained to the World Affairs Council in 2014. “But we should not be blinded by that same experience.”

Following that presentation, the West Point graduate ushered in multiple changes to the organization he describes as the ‘architect of the Army’. Those changes have included working diligently for Army modernization, the Army Operating Concept, re-examining the recruiting process, and championing a joint service approach to warfare known as MultiDomain Battle.

On May 15, 2017, TRADOC welcomed a familiar ally to Perkins when MacFarland assumed responsibilities as the organization’s deputy commanding general. Throughout the last 10

months, both generals and their staffs have advocated for better officer, civilian and noncommissioned officer training and education.

MacFarland has been known to explain the United States was built on the shoulders of the Soldiers of the Army, and that Soldiers are crucial to the survival of the nation.

While their departures from TRADOC will be challenging, both are confident the Army is in a great place for the future.

“As I near the end of my career, it is evident to me that our country and our Army is in good hands because of the professionalism, education and commitment of our Soldiers,” MacFarland said.

The TRADOC Change of Command ceremony between Gen. David G. Perkins and Gen. Stephen J. Townsend will be held at 10 a.m. in the Jacob’s Theater. The ceremony will be livestreamed at the TRADOC website, www.tradoc.army.mil

In the dark, early hours of the morning, U.S. Air Force Airmen pull themselves out of bed and get ready for another 12-hour shift on the ightline here where keeping the F-22A Raptors mission ready is a 365 days a year 24/7 job for the crew chiefs of the 1st Fighter Wing.

When U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Ian Ivey, 27th Aircraft Maintenance Unit dedicated crew chief, shows up to his unit for roll call, he receives the aircraft he will be responsible for and grabs his

toolbox and all necessary equipment then heads out to his assigned jet.

“A day-to-day task being on a yer is coming into work 20 minutes early. For the most part, they try to put you on the same aircraft but barring the ying schedule and manning issues (could be tasked to a different aircraft),” said Ivey. “You’ll get out to the airplane and do a walk around inspection, make sure all the safety equipment gets removed and then hook up the communication equipment then wait for the pilot to get there.”

Upon arrival of the pilot, Ivey performs another walk round and communications check before take-off. As

the crew chief’s assigned aircraft takes off, they are now responsible for preparing for the landing and handling any issues that may arise while in ight.

“My job now that the aircraft has landed is to inspect the general condition, make sure servicing is ne and it’s ready to go the next time we need it,” explained U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Preston Reed, 1st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, 94th Tactical Aircraft Maintenance Squadron crew chief, while gathering his tools and checking the communication equipment.

For the F-22A Raptor to be capable of ying and completing its mission, crew chiefs play a vital role in ensuring all parts are in working condition and the electronics are up to speed.

For Ivey, being a dedicated crew chief is one of the most job satisfying careers in the Air Force because of the responsibility and pride that follows that title.

“I’m a DCC now so I get my name on top now,” said Ivey. “Having my name at the top, that’s my airplane. I’m in charge of everything that goes on with that airplane. When people need to get jobs done on that airplane they come to me, it’s my bird. It’s a pretty good feeling being able to say that I’m one of 180 something (dedicated crew chiefs for) F-22s in the Air Force and one of those has my name on it, so I take a lot of pride in that.”

There have been less than 60 days in 2018. In those 60 days, at Joint Base Langley-Eustis alone, we’ve flown more than 1,500 stories, had nearly 250,000 people come through the gates, and seen approximately 35,000 patients at the hospital.

Those accomplishments are commendable. But it is this fact, the fact that we quantify our success simply by a number of completed repetitions that leads us to prioritizing short-term achievements, which detract from longterm victories. This concept of revolutionary, long-term change and many others were discussed at the 2018 Air Force Association Air Warfare Symposium titled, “Innovation: The War Fighter’s Edge.”

The two-day conference featured notable military and civilian speakers and panelists, including the Secretary of the Air Force, Chief of Staff of the Air Force, Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force and directors of universities and companies such as Alphabet, Inc. and Lockheed Martin. While these speakers introduced complex ideas that are piercing the fields of artificial intelligence and other cyber technologies, the bottom line of many of their presen-

The Honorable Heather Wilson, Secretary of the Air Force, shared this idea in her presentation, “State of the Force.” By drawing comparisons to Hap Arnold and his vision in 1945 of a war that “may be fought by airplanes with no men in them at all,” Secretary Wilson calls the members of the Air Force toward an innovation culture, in which ideas are pursued relentlessly and applied quickly, changing the way we do business.

“It’s time to take risks. It’s time to productively fail,” said Wilson.

But as with any change, there are always tribulations before triumphs. This sentiment was shared repetitively during the symposium, from the Young Innovators Panel, in which Airmen, who are now CEOs, presidents, and founders of companies, discussed their » See INNOVATION | 12

The human body’s most powerful, hardest working muscle is the heart. Like any other muscle, the heart needs exercise to build strength and relieve extra effort the body may be experiencing from an unhealthy lifestyle.

Langley Hospital and McDonald Army Health Center at Joint Base Langley-Eustis recognize American Heart Month in February as part of a year-round health observance campaign to empower service members and their families to take control and improve quality of life through a healthy lifestyle.

Dr. Bruce Timins, 633rd Medical Operations Squadron cardiologist, said healthy habits, big or small, are key to maintaining a strong heart.

“The most significant factor in heart health is obesity,” said Timins. “Most issues our patients have can be boiled down to not adjusting their diet to cater to a declining metabolism that comes naturally with age.”

Diet is essential when it comes to improving heart health, and Timins said it begins with education. Once a patient is diagnosed with heart disease related issues,

they are scheduled to speak with a health manager for one-on-one care.

“I try to motivate patients to self-manage through personalized health plans,” said Carol Brown, 633rd Medical Group health manager. “We discuss the specifics of their diet and the importance of reading nutritional labels. I also educate them on the various health and diet classes we offer, as well as the exercise programs that are available.”

Perhaps the most important tips to take away from American Hearth Month are focused on preventative care. A proactive approach towards maintaining a healthy heart can help to avoid the stress of working to counteract damage that has been done, said Timins.

“You can’t do anything about family history, but certainly keeping your weight down and remaining physi-

cally active reduces the probability of heart disease,” said Timins. “A healthy lifestyle modifies risk factors like blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol. These things have actually been proven to work over a period of time.”

While service members may focus on reaching shortterm goals, like fitness levels, Timins recommends taking care of one’s heart by focusing on preventative care and long-term goals.

“Think of your body as your car,” said Timins. “You have your oil changed every six months. Walking around with high blood pressure is basically like not changing the oil. Parts wear out faster.

Service secretaries: Quality of schools, reciprocity of licenses should be considered in basing decisions

(BEGIN TEXT OF LETTER) Dear Governors Sandoval, Bullock, and members of the National Governors Association, Thank you for your support of our men and women in the military. We are often asked what communities can do to support those who serve. While focus on the mission is always our priority, the factors military families cite most frequently as drawbacks to military service include military dependent’s difficulty assimilating into local school systems following a duty station transfer, the quality of schools available for their children, and

the ability of spouses to obtain jobs and sustain careers. With that in mind, we will encourage leadership to consider the quality of schools near bases and whether reciprocity of professional licenses is available for military families when evaluating future basing or mission alternatives.

Military families relocate frequently. The services endeavor to schedule transfers to minimize impact on the academic year, but this is not always possible. As a result, incoming students face difficulties transferring credits between school

systems, adjusting to varied curriculum, and joining sports teams or clubs after the start of the school year. Exclusion from extra-curricular activities is particularly challenging for our military children, as they are critical to social development and self-esteem. Facilitating military spouses in continuing their work in a new place of residence without delays or extra expense is also important. Spouses in professionally licensed fields such as medical, legal, engineering, education, accounting, or the cosmetic arts face challenges due to delays or cost of transferring licenses to a new state or jurisdiction. Eliminating or mitigating these barriers will improve

The Trials are also a test of the athletes’ resiliency, strength and endurance, according to Col. Mike Davis, vice commander of the 99th Air Base Wing, and Nellis and the surrounding community are excited to host the event.

“We are honored for the opportunity to support these warriors,” he said.

During the ceremony, the athletes were recognized by service and nation, the U.S. Air Force Academy’s Wings of Blue performed a parachute demonstration, two HH-60 Pave Hawks

from the 66th Rescue Squadron flew a two-ship formation and the Trials torch was lit.

This year, the participants are made up of 52 active duty, 12 Air National Guard and Reserve and 55 Air Force veterans.

The Trials are part of the Air Force’s Wounded Warrior program, which is a congressionally mandated and federally funded organization administered by AFPC in San Antonio, Texas. The program includes recovery care coordinators, non-medical care managers and other professionals who work with wounded warriors, their families and caregivers to guide them through various day-today challenges.

Gantt spoke on how attitude and determination can forge a path to success.

“It is not always going to be easy and many times it is not going to go your way the first time,” said Gantt. “Find out why it didn’t work out and if there is anything you can do about it. Get stronger and come back next time better prepared, better equipped and know in your mind

that you are not going to give up on it.”

The guest speakers both received an award of appreciation for their service and speaking at the ceremonies.

The Newport News Woodside High School Step dance team performed a routine of handclaps and foot stomps using their bodies as instruments to produce rhythms and sounds. The Warwick High School Drama Club performed a short skit about the 1960’s Freedom Riders.

Students from Dozier Middle School dressed as African-American Medal of Honor recipients to highlight each recipient’s military career and achievements. A total of 89 African-American service members have received the U.S. highest and most prestigious decoration of valor.

While the theme of “African-Americans in Times of War” may just be this year, JBLE will continue to honor the sacrifices and struggles African-American service members have overcome throughout our history.

Happy persistence is necessary, not only because change breeds adversity, but because true innovation causes disruption among organizations.

While innovation is making new things better, disruption is making old things obsolete, said Mr. Peter Wicher, director of strategic relations, Singularity University. We need to stop thinking about becoming 10 percent better, but rather 10 times better.

Growth is exponential, not linear.

Nearly all the presentations and panels during the AFA Symposium,

whether pertaining to intellectual growth, innovation, long-term change, disruption, rapid capability, or transformation, led to one conclusion – we, as an Air Force, are preparing for a future in which we may face a near peer adversary.

“While we’re not up against any Goliath’s today,” said Gen. David Goldfein, Chief of Staff of the Air Force. “We need to start thinking and acting more like David. Like a competitor in the ring who doesn’t assume overmatch. It’s time to get edgier and hungry.

It’s time to think big, start small, and scale fast.”

As stated in the 2018 National Defense Strategy, “America has no preordained right to victory on the battlefield.”

The 2018 AFA Air Warfare Symposium made it clear that the time is now –

the time to not only to complete the task at hand, but to look to the future, to think big, exponential, disruptive thoughts, rapidly integrate those ideas at all levels, and support the development of a culture in which your subordinates feel empowered to do the same.

“For over a decade, we have privileged the present at the expense of investing in the future,” said Wilson.

“Sharpening our competitive edge in this new age will require creative approaches, innovation, resources and execution at the speed of relevance. It’s time to get after it. Don’t wait for us.”

King Street and Armistead Gates under construction 2018 Late Urban Archery Deer Season The 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron will renovate the guard houses at the King Street and Armistead Gates.

The construction will be phased to minimize traffic impact. The first phase of construction will affect two of the four inbound lanes and one of the two outbound lanes at the Armistead gate. This phase will also affect one inbound and one outbound lane of the King Street gate.

Phase one of construction will last up to 60 days and begin on Nov. 27, 2017, at 9 a.m. Phase two of construction will last up to 57 days and is expected to begin Jan. 26, 2018, at 9 a.m. Phase two will affect the remaining two inbound lanes and one outbound lane at the Armistead gate, and the remaining inbound and outbound lane at the King Street gate. Due to contract vacancies and multiple provider deployments/permanent changes of station during the coming months, it will take longer to receive appointments and have messages returned.

In light of these staffing concerns, TRICARE will temporarily enroll only Active Duty service members and their family members. This action is being taken to ensure patients receive the care they deserve within the established standards. There will be no enrollment changes or action taken to any patients who are already enrolled at the 633rd Medical Group, regardless of category. JBLE Family Child Care Program

The Joint Base Langley-Eustis Family Child Care Program is looking for child care providers interested in a professional, portable career that will allow them to stay at home and run a home-based business. The program is available for children ages two weeks to 12 years old.

Child care providers must be at least 18 years old, be able to read and speak English, be in good health, and willing to undergo a background check. The FCC will provide training and materials to get your business started.
