It’s nearing that time again!

AirPower over Hampton Roads JBLE Air and Space Expo, Langley Air Force Base’s biennial air show, takes place May 18-20, 2018. The air show is open to the public beginning Friday evening, and all

day Saturday and Sunday.

The U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Team, the Thunderbirds, are scheduled to headline the air show. Other highlights include the Air Combat Command F-22 Demonstration Team, the Army Golden Knights Parachute Team, Rob Holland Ultimate Air Shows, and a Friday night act including Twin Beech 18 flyer Matt Younkin, just to

name a few.

Admission is free. General admission will enter though the Armistead (West) or LaSalle Gate. Drivers will be directed to general parking. Handicap parking will only be available by entering through Armistead Gate (West Gate). Parking will also be available off-base at the Hampton Coliseum and Thomas Nelson Community College. A shuttle bus

will run between those locations and the air show.

SAAPM: Protecting people protects the mission

Each year, April is recognized across the nation as Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month.

This year’s theme, “Protecting our People Protects the Mission,� focuses on the role every service member plays in preventing sexual assault and other inappropriate behavior. “In addition to the devastating impact on an individual, a sexual assault can severely impact a unit’s readiness to perform its mission,� said Scottie Hampton, sexual assault victim advocate. “We can protect our

mission by ensuring everyone within the Department of Defense is committed to advancing an environment where sexist behaviors, sexual harassment, hazing, bullying and sexual assault are not tolerated, condoned or ignored.�

According to the DoD and its partner, the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network, one in every six women and one in 33 men will be affected by sexual assault within their lifetime.

At Joint Base Langley-Eustis, service members, civilian employees, retirees and dependents can participate in several events to highlight current efforts to care for victims and talk about new ways to infuse prevention practices into daily missions.

At Langley Air Force Base, the kick-off event features the Langley Sexual Assault Theater Group performing a short interactive skit at the Langley Base Theater April 13 at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. “The cast will act out a scene demonstrating how sexist thoughts

3 and behaviors lead to sexual harassment and assault,� said Hampton. “Cast members will remain in character and engage the audience, helping members with identifying how negative uncheck behaviors escalated to the point of harming a fellow wingman and the opportunities when a proactive bystander could have intervened and to prevent escalation.�

U.S. Air Force Maj. Paul “Loco” Lopez, U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor Demonstration Team pilot, and his team finished their first air show of the season at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Az., March 17, 2018.

The 2018 Yuma Air Show brought a mixture of past and present aircraft to the skies. The Raptor showcased its superior capabilities while also performing a heritage flight with the P-38 Sabre during the one-day event.

“It feels amazing to have completed our first show,” said Lopez. “It’s a great confidence booster because it validates all the training we have received throughout the last six months. We appreciate all the support we have received throughout this epic journey.”

While many see the demonstration team as another aerial performance unit, their mission is to educate current and future U.S. Air Force generations of the importance of air superiority, while enhancing community relations.

April 6, 2018 ROTC students at Kofa High School and invited 130 disabled children to a meet and greet before the show.

“We thoroughly enjoy talking with the local communities,” said Master Sgt. Jamie Fleming, F-22 Raptor Demonstration Team superintendent. “We hope through telling our story and the story of other Airmen, we are able to inspire others to pursue their passions and reach their goals.”

After performing for the Yuma community, Lopez flew to join the A-10 Warthog, P-51 Mustang and F-35 Lightning during the Heritage Flight performance for “Luke Days” at Luke Air Force Base.

The Air Force Heritage Flight Foundation pairs modern fighter aircraft alongside WWII, Korean and Vietnam-era aircraft to demonstrate the advances in aerial support.

“Our demo team and heritage flights are important because they provide an opportunity for us to preserve our legacy, honor the heroes who have come before us and the veterans who are currently serving,” said Lopez.

Lancaster, California performing at the 2018 Los Angeles County Air Show, March 24-25, while also managing to conquer a feat never done by another demonstration team before — Lopez flew a heritage flight 90 miles away in Riverside, California before returning to complete his aerial performance in Lancaster. During the rest of the air show season, Maj. Lopez will again perform two separated demonstrations at two different sites.

Now with their second show on the books, the 13-member team will continue their season traveling to Santiago, Chile to showcase American air power during

a week-long expo.

“One of my favorite things about the F-22 Demonstration Team is getting various opportunities to travel around the world with the team” said “Loco”. “We look forward to carrying on the tradition of excellence that the F-22 Raptor Demonstration Team is known for everywhere we go.”

DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS: Stay safe. Be informed.

Richardson It’s the beginning of the year and if your life is anything like mine, then your inboxes, timelines, and newsfeeds are flooded with advertisements for products that promise to increase your physical fitness. From drinks and bars, to pills and powders, these items are all over our devices and on every platform. Each one promising the best results in the least amount of time. So, how do you know what really works? Is it safe? Will it impact your military career? According to the National Institutes of Health, the dietary supplement industry does about $37 billion in sales in the United States each year. Before you shell out your hardearned cash for the latest/greatest dietary supplement, consider the following.

Supplements are not substitutes. A dietary supplement is defined as any product that is designed to add to (or supplement) one’s diet. Dietary supplements

come in many forms – pills, powders, bars, drinks – and can contain macronutrients (like protein), vitamins, minerals and amino acids, along with natural ingredients like herbs and other plantbased products. These ingredients can be combined (like a multi-vitamin) or standalone. The key words to remember in this definition are “add to”. It’s really easy to start viewing supplements as substitutes for whole foods and/or exercise.

As you move forward with plans to reach your fitness goals, I challenge you to reframe your thinking as it relates to the role supplements may or may not play in your plan. It’s important to ask yourself how does this supplement “add to” my healthy eating and/or exercise regimen.

Safety, quality, and effectiveness are not guaranteed. You can’t always believe the marketing claims, advertisements, or

even labels of supplement products. Supplements are NOT approved or evaluated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) before they are sold on the market. The FDA can only take action if a product is later found to be mislabeled or to cause harm. Look for third-party certification seals on your supplements to validate the quality of the product. Keep in mind, third-party certification only ensures good manufacturing practices, purity, and quality – it does not guarantee a dietary supplement is safe or effective.

More is not always better. Conventional wisdom says “two is better than one” and that’s often the case. However when it comes to dietary supplements, more is not always better. Sometimes two dietary supplements have an additive effect while other combinations negate each other. Some combinations enhance (or increase) effects and work synergistically while others enhance effects exponentially. Be mindful of how any dietary supplements you are taking may combine with other supplements, over-the-counter and prescription medications. Also, remember to let your healthcare provider know what you’re taking during each medical

7 appointment.

Be an informed consumer. If you are going to use dietary supplements, then you have to do your homework. A quick Google search is not enough. Operation Supplement Safety (OPSS) is a Department of Defense campaign designed to provide information about safe dietary supplement use. The OPSS.org website has everything you need to help you learn more about supplements, including a list of high-risk ingredients, an option to email questions to experts, and a link for free access to the Natural Medicines database. You can even download the free OPSS app to have all this great information with you on-the-go.

Ultimately, the decision to use dietary supplements is yours to make. With that being said, it’s also your responsibility to be aware of the potential risks and consequences of supplement use. The OPSS website is a great resource for credible dietary supplement information. Remember if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. Improving physical fitness requires time and effort — there is no real substitute for eating well and training hard.

“I guess they thought it was just a phase,” said U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Nicholas Whitehurst, thinking back to how wrong his parents were when they bought him his rst skateboard as a Christmas gift.

Fast forward seven years, and Whitehurst, a client systems technician with the 633rd Communications Squadron, is not only still

skateboarding, but he’s also in the Guinness Book of World Records for completing the most Ollie 180s in one minute.

The Ollie 180, which involves popping the board completely into the air, then turning 180 degrees and landing, is a trick Whitehurst knew he could dominate within a minute, checking off his personal bucket list item of making a world record.

Whitehurst completed the record in his hometown of Hampton, which is also home to his duty station, Joint Base Langley-Eustis.

However, he didn’t have witnesses or enough footage to prove he actually beat the record.

For Whitehurst trying again and again is an integral part of skateboarding, and to others like his mom, Amy, and dad, Bill, that never-give-up attitude is a de ning characteristic of their son. It came as no surprise to her when Nick gathered a few of his friends to help document the second attempt and send it to Guinness.

“Nick is straight-forward; he

knows what he wants to do and just does it,” said Bill. “He always sets goals.”

Months after sending the footage in to Guinness, Whitehurst’s mom received the plaque in a package while Nick was skating in Richmond for Go Skate Day, June 21, 2014.

“I opened it up and was like ‘byGod there you go; this is just crazy all in itself,’” said Amy. “He and his buddies had a grocery list of things they wanted to do: sky diving, Guinness Book of World Records and so on, and damn if he didn’t hit them. I m them mean ean it’s awesome; he sets out goals, and he reaches for them and he does them.”

For Whitehurst, the practice of not only reattempting the record, but retrying other tricks, is something he feels he can relay to everyday life; now, speci cally to his job in the U.S. Air Force.

A welder by trade, Whitehurst had no formal training in information technology before joining the Air Force, and as a newer Airman,

“I’m not a computer guy; I’m a welder and then a skateboarder,” said Whitehurst. “But, when I have something in front of me that I want to get better at, [I] have to strive to be the best; I’ll never be the best, but you just have to have a goal and a mindset to do well at things.”

Constantly striving to beat his own records, Whitehurst has found that he always has to make adjustments in each attempt until he nally accomplishes his goals, both at work and on the concrete.

“There’s one time I was skating a stair set, and I kept falling on this shoulder, and there’s a scar of scar tissue so it will never heal right. So, you got to learn to fall and learn how to adjust yourself when you’re trying a new trick. It’s like anything in life, sometimes you just have to adjust,” said Whitehurst.

However, there is an upcoming adjustment Whitehurst admits he’s nervous about.

“When I rst learned I was deploying, I wasn’t afraid of the heat or the bugs, or getting attacked, I was more dead-set on, ‘how am I going to skateboard?’” said Whitehurst. “That’s so much time away from skateboarding. At basic training, I was basically pulling my hair out because of it, and that was only two months.”

His mom echoed that not having his board would be the largest concern for her son, acknowledging half-jokingly that he may miss gliding across the concrete more than he’s going to miss having family close.

“When I go skating I pretty much let go of the world completely, not just work, but home stressors,” said Whitehurst. “I go skate [and] that’s all I am is just skateboarding. It’s nice to get away from everything and be in my own little paradise.”

Aside from two months in basic military training, since getting his rst board, the sport has provided a daily escape from frustrations, and something to work toward improving upon.

“It’s always learning and it’s always perfecting, so you’re never going to be the best, but I guess that’s what I like about [skateboarding],” said Whitehurst. “The fact that nobody can be perfect at anything should attract them to be good at something.”

Whitehurst said that if he can’t skate, he’ll have to nd a slab of wood to use as a faux skateboard, so that he can at least imagine dropping-in on a half-pipe.

“I envision probably by the 15th of April, Nick saying, ‘yeah mom, put it in the box and send it to me,’ said Amy. “He will nd a stairwell, an empty hand-rail; he will nd a piece of wood, he’ll nd something.”

Regardless of having a real board or a block of wood, Whitehurst is also planning to focus on other areas of his life like tness, education and saving money to buy a house.

“I think everyone should be motivated to keep growing; I don’t want to sit around and just let life pass me by because that’s boring and it’s pointless,” he said.

“With the skate scene, it’s so broad, there are so many different styles to learn, so you can pick up so much from other people and teach others along the way; it’s never boring.”

“There’s a lot of value bringing in that age and experience back to the table to take a look at what we’re doing,” said Lavigne. “We’re always focused on the mission in front of us but it’s good to bring someone in who has perspective and who can provide context to some of the things we’re pushing.”

As the forum came to a close, Davenport thanked the CSMs for their participation and expressed his hope that the tradition of inviting former TRADOC CSMs to future workshops continues.

“Much of the work we’re accomplishing in TRADOC today is built on the level foundation these great leaders laid for us during their individual tenures as TRADOC CSMs.” Davenport said. “We just couldn’t have done it without them, and it’s so humbling to have them return and see how far the work they started has gone.”

The 733rd Civil Engineer Division will install new active vehicle barriers at the Fort Eustis main gate, beginning April 9, 2018. The construction will be phased to minimize traffic impact. The first phase will last until May 1, 2018. During this time, the portion of Madison Avenue adjacent to outbound Washington Boulevard will be closed. Traffic traveling north through this area will travel down 28th Street to Jefferson Avenue and then onto Washington Boulevard. The second phase will occur over two weekends, May 4-7 and May 11-14, 2018. During this phase, the outbound lanes of Washington Boulevard will become a two-way between Jefferson Avenue and Madison Avenue. This will allow inbound traffic to divert left onto Madison Avenue, travel down the right lane of what is typically the outbound lanes of Washington Boulevard, then turn right onto Jefferson Avenue, and return to the normal route. The third phase will also spread over two weekends, May 18-21 and May 25-28, 2018. Military Tuition Assistance briefing

Prior to the first use of Military Tuition Assistance, Service members are required to attend an initial TA briefing to ensure rules, roles and user responsibilities are clearly understood.

Currently, the briefings are conducted in room 130 at the Education Center the first three Fridays of every month at 9 a.m. Initial TA briefings will be conducted in room 123 at the Education Center each Tuesday at 9 a.m.
