Welcome to the 2018 Langley Air Show, the Joint Base Langley-Eustis Air and Space Expo! It is our distinct honor and privilege to open our gates for a weekend of flying, family and fun. The 2018 air show, affectionately known as “Airpower over Hampton Roads,” is particularly special for Joint Base Langley-Eustis, as we are celebrating both the 100-year anniversary of Fort Eustis and the 1st Fighter Wing, and the key role the Hampton Roads community has had in our shared history for more than a century.

At Joint Base Langley-Eustis, we have some of the most exceptional Airmen and Soldiers in the world, and this air show gives our community members a front row seat to their professionalism, innovation and aptitude that makes the mission happen.

Additionally, we have put together an impressive lineup of military and civilian performers to showcase the capabilities of our Air Force and our sister services. From May 1820, the skies above Langley Air Force Base will be packed with aerial performances, including the United States Air Force Thunderbirds, the F-22 Aerial Demonstration Team, and the United States Army Golden Knights Parachute

Team. In the evenings, you can enjoy live music from our featured performers Fantasia and Trace Adkins.

Our open house allows us to highlight the military’s role in national security to the Hampton Roads community and our local community partners. It’s our way of thanking the surrounding community for a more than 100-year legacy of unwavering support. For 100 years, Airmen and Soldiers at Langley AFB and Fort Eustis have not only been on the cutting edge of military innovation, but have also been proud citizens of the Hampton Roads community.

AirPower over Hampton Roads: General Information AT THE EVENT

• Gates open at 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

• The spectacular Night Show will begin at 6 p.m.

Friday. There will be no Night Show on Saturday or Sunday.

• Entrance to all performances is FREE and open to the public — no tickets are required. All visitors should carry identification.

• There will be random vehicle and bag searches upon entry.

• Food and beverage vendors will be accepting CASH payments ONLY. ATMs will be available on site.

• Smoking is allowed, but only in designated areas (NOT ON THE FLIGHT LINE).

• No tailgating.

• No pets are allowed, however service dogs are permitted. In the event that the air show noise or conditions are not suitable for your service companion, you are permitted to leave the air show area and re-enter as needed.

Additionally, guests may park on base by traveling through the Armistead Gate (West Gate) or the LaSalle gate • All Department of Defense identification card holders leaving or accessing the base during air show hours are highly encouraged to avoid the Armistead and LaSalle gates, as both will be open to the general public on Friday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. During the beginning hours of the show each day all lanes of traffic with the exception of one will be inbound to the base through Armistead and LaSalle gates. This will traffic pattern be reversed as we near closing time.

• The LaSalle, Armistead and King Street Gates will remain accessible to DoD card holders, but delays can be expected. Please only use the King Street Gate if you reside on the installation, as this gate will also be the primary entrance for Distinguished Visitors, media, vendors, and exhibitors.

• There is no parking on the North side. All guests, DoD and Non-DoD will be directed to parking in multiple locations depending on the gate they access.

• Guests who wish to utilize a taxi service or ride share service such as Uber or Lyft, must be dropped off/picked up at one of the off base shuttle locations.

• No overnight parking is authorized. All vehicles are subject to tow at the owners expense.

“Seeing them fly at Langley every day never gets old,” said U.S. Air Force Tech.

Sgt. Jeff Baskin, Air Combat Command F-22 Raptor Demonstration Team dedicated crew chief. “I am excited for our neighbors to see the F-22 show, and hope it makes them proud.”

The upcoming airshow at Langley Air Force Base, May 18-20, will give the Hampton Roads community an opportunity for an up-close experience with the Raptor — the aircraft they see and hear on a daily basis.

Unlike a traditional flyby, the demonstration team combines combative movements used in the field with aerobatic feats, as well as a ground show showcasing precision movements by the maintainers.

For demo team members like Baskin, the Langley air show carries special significance, being the team’s home-station.

“Langley has a legacy being the oldest continually active air base in the world,” said Staff Sgt. Annemarie Prozillo, ACC F-22 Raptor Demo Team aircrew flight

equipment specialist. “The F-22 is an extraordinary aircraft, and I’m honored to be a part of the team and an unmatched legacy.”

Having grown up in Virginia Beach, Maj. Paul “Loco” Lopez, F-22 Raptor Demo Team pilot, is connected to the “AirPower over Hampton Roads” airshow on a personal level.

“It’s going to be my hometown show.

My father was in the U.S. Navy, so I grew up watching the Navy fighter jets, F-14 Tomcat and F-18 Hornet, flying over my house,” said Lopez. “I knew flying fighter jets was what I wanted to do with my life. To be able to showcase our premier fighters in the U.S. Air Force in my hometown is a dream come true.”

Whether hoping to see the demonstration team’s people, plane or performance, the Hampton Roads community can experience the culmination of individuals from different backgrounds, cultures and careers throughout the Air Force come together to showcase America’s airpower.

“We hope we get to meet everyone who is coming to the show and share our story of what it’s like to be an Air-

man serving in the world’s greatest Air Force,” said Lopez. “Our community can get a taste of what our men and women in blue – their neighbors — do every day.

Thunderbirds show season to resume at JBLE

By United States Air Demonstration Squadron 633RD AIR BASE WING PUBLIC AFFAIRS NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, NEV.

Gen. Mike Holmes, Commander of Air Combat Command, has authorized the resumption of Thunderbird performances starting at Air Power over Hampton Roads at Joint Base Langley-Eustis 19-20 May, 2018.

Holmes made this determination based on recommendations of leadership from the U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron, 57th Wing and U.S. Air Force Warfare Center, as well as a careful review of the team’s safety, training and operational practices.

“The Thunderbirds look forward to safely resuming public shows at Air Power over Hampton Roads,” said Lt. Col. Kevin Walsh, Thunderbird 1, Commander/Leader. “It’s been challenging to get us to this point, but the team is re-

silient, focused and ready to get back to our mission of recruiting, retaining and inspiring.”

The Thunderbirds will transit to Joint Base Langley-Eustis early in the week leading up to the show to provide additional practice time.

The return to regular performances is a pivotal milestone for the Thunderbirds as they recover from their first fatal mishap in 36 years.

“We are extremely grateful for the support, faith and confidence of our senior Air Force leadership as we prepare to showcase our United States Air Force to the public once more,” Walsh said. “As we hit the road, we’ll carry on our wingman’s legacy with pride.”

An investigation remains underway into the cause of the mishap. A report will be made available to the public once complete.

Fort Eustis’ Groninger Library has implemented an ongoing Reading Program entitled “1000 Books Before Kindergarten” and “1000 Books from 1st -5th grades.” For every 100 books read, children can take their reading log to the library to receive a prize.
