336th TRS rolls into new Sec+ course

The 336th Training Squadron cut the ribbon on the new cutting edge 501 Security Plus course May 24, 2018 at Thompson Hall on Keesler Air Force Base.

A team of 23 individuals worked over the span of almost 18 months to complete the transition from the aging 401 course to the new 501 course material.

“We are excited to be here today to roll out the new 501 Sec+ course,” said Lt. Col. Daniel Schmitt, 336th TRS commander. “If you are going to be a network security professional you need to be held to a higher standard and I know that it’s a challenge down here in initial skills but we hit it head on. This is a challenge but it’s a challenge worth achieving because our nation depends on it.”

In a world where technological threats evolve at an increasing pace, the 336th TRS is leading the way in the realm of cyber security training.

“At one point in time the Air Force realized it had to up its game in the cyber world,” Schmitt said. “The conversation

of strengthening cyber capabilities advanced to the point where we realized we need to up our game on the education side of things. Cyber is special. It’s a domain created by us. It was our brain cells that put it all together. The 336th TRS is the cornerstone of cyber security. We create the education foundation for all cyber security through this course.”

The team accumulated more than 700 hours of course development to ensure students from five different cyber career fields would be able to attend the newly updated course.

“We spent time developing everything for this course ranging from labs and case studies to online content,” said Tech. Sgt. Alan Gault, 336th TRS instructor and 501 Sec+ course project manager. “Between the 401 and 501 course they actually increased the course material by over 25 percent but kept the same amount of teaching hours.”

One of the many updates was the added ability for students who are accepted into the course to be able to access precourse material from anywhere around the globe.

“The instructors recorded over 160 vid-

eos of course materials in house through the partnership of the 81st Training Wing Public Affairs broadcasting team,” Gault said. “All of these videos along with the black board material we developed make it so the students can start looking at it as soon as possible from anywhere around the world.”

We’re also excited because of how the format of this class fits with Air Education and Training Command’s vision about bringing about the Continuum of Learning, said Schmitt. This course format allows multiple methods of delivery, whether, in-residence or solely online, and allows for proficiency advancement.

The road to the roll out of the new course wasn’t journeyed by Sec+ personnel alone. The group partnered with members from the 333rd TRS, the 338th TRS, other 336th TRS personnel and other units around the 81st TRW to make the project a success.

“Between Faculty Development, the 333rd TRS, Public Affairs and several others, we’ve been able to make this happen,” Gaults aid. “It was a lot of relationship building between us and different units.”

The secretary of the Air Force approved the extension to VRRAD for implementation on May 11, 2018 as one of a wide range of initiatives the Air Force is pursuing to improve rated ofďŹ cers’ quality of life and quality of service in order to increase retention and the rated ofďŹ cer inventory. “OfďŹ cers who return to active duty under VRRAD will ďŹ ll rated staff and active ying staff, test, training and operational positions where rated ofďŹ cer expertise is required,â€? said Maj. Elizabeth Jarding, Air Force’s Personnel Center VRRAD rated liaison. “We can match VRRAD participants to stateside or overseas requirements where they’ll ďŹ ll critical billets that would otherwise remain vacant due to the shortage of rated ofďŹ cers.â€?

Rated ofďŹ cers who received an active duty-retirement within ďŹ ve years, or will receive one within 12 months from their VRRAD date of application, in the ranks of captain, major or lieutenant colonel, and who are under age 50, may apply for the program, with applicats older than 50 considered on a case-bycase basis. Participation has expanded to up to 1,000 retired rated ofďŹ cers and active-duty tour lengths are increased to a minimum of 24 months and a maximum

“In 2008, I was robbed at gun point at a car wash. I was off duty just minding my own business and right when I was finishing up, a guy with a skeleton mask and gun—pointed right at me —came from around the corner and said ‘give me all your money,’” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Eli Kendrick.

At the time, Kendrick was a police officer and a member of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. While the initial shock settled in, he decided that giving the gunman what he wanted was the best option.

However, as he walked toward the man, Kendrick’s mind raced with what to do and he resorted back to his training from the Marine Corps and police academy.

“As we struggled over the gun, I got the gun out of his hand during which it fired a shot, but didn’t strike anyone,” said Kendrick. “He took off and ran around the corner where there was a second guy.”

Kendrick tried to ensure the weapon was cleared and ready to shoot if need be, but in the heat of the moment could not figure out why it wasn’t working.

He used his military and police academy training to tap, rack and evaluate to clear the weapon, but it didn’t work.

“I couldn’t stop and look at the gun because they were right in front of me,” said Kendrick. “At this time, I thought I could turn around and run away, but obviously they must have (another) gun too or they wouldn’t turn around to face me.”

From his Marine Corps training, Kendrick knew he couldn’t turn back. He was faced with an ambush and had to assault through it.

“So I pretended the gun worked, but they didn’t run away. It was odd, he threw my stuff down and said give me my gun back, and I didn’t agree with that. I told him to get down so I could get to my cell phone, but they started to separate and surround me,” said Kendrick. “I had no choice but to fight again. I pistol whipped one guy upside the head and knocked him out and fought the other guy and knocked him down. He went to go help the other guy up and I got to my phone and called 911. ” Once additional police officers showed up, one guy was arrested on scene and the other was found and arrested later that night.

As one of the most significant events in

his life, the biggest aspect of the day Kendrick remembers is how the police officers on duty came to his aid.

Six years after the robbery, Kendrick transitioned from the Marine Corps Reserves to the Air Force Reserves, while maintaining his full-time police officer job.

In 2017, Kendrick was recognized for his outstanding work with the Top Cop award for the Virginia Beach and Hampton area. The Top Cop award is meant to pay tribute to law enforcement officers in federal, state, county, tribal and local agencies from across the country for actions above and beyond the call of duty.

Winning Top Cop was not an individual award for Kendrick. He credits his entire ready response team with getting him there.

“There were a lot of cases that not only myself worked on, but my team,” said Kendrick. “It definitely wasn’t just me.”

Under Kendrick’s leadership, the ready response team solved and deescalated a variety of high threat cases and situations.

“We had a massage parlor that was robbed three times at gun point. The robbery detectives were busy with other cases and asked us to help with the case,” said Kendrick. “Everybody on our team that day contributed one way or another in tracking down who this individual was, how they were committing their crimes, finding out who was involved, advising other officers and locating an accomplice.

Our entire team worked together to find both suspects, which resulted in a search warrant for a home, which resulted in finding a dead body in the truck of a car.”

Kendrick’s need to serve and help others blossomed in high school with the concepts of teamwork and camaraderie in sports. Today it remains a major motivator in serving his community and country.

“I do believe it is a service,” said Kendrick of his military and police duties.

“That means you go out there and work, you may not be getting all the benefits in the end, but you’re serving and that’s what I like. You do sacrifice .There are injuries, and times you wish you were somewhere else and the same goes for the Police Department, but you do what you do because you enjoy serving and providing that benefit to your family and the public. It’s just something I do enjoy.”

Through hard work and dedication to his military service, police work and his teammates in both uniforms, Kendrick stood out and earned the Top Cop award for the Virginia Beach Police Department.

U.S. service members, veterans and community members gathered to remember and honor the fallen during a Memorial Day ceremony at Hampton National Cemetery in Hampton, May 28, 2018.

During the annual ceremony, wreaths representing each branch of service were laid to commemorate the sacrifice made by veterans and fallen service members for the nation.

“Memorial day gives us the opportunity to stop and think about those brave [service members] who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our great nation,” said keynote speaker U.S. Army Col. Chris Corizzo, Army Capabilities Integration Center sustainment division chief. “We are unified with the common purpose of honoring

well-deserved tribute to those who ensured us the freedoms that we now enjoy.”

Service members from each branch laid wreaths on the gravesites and rendered a salute to signify commitment to honoring the legacy of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

During the ceremony a roll-call was conducted to honor those who served during times of conflict dating back to World War II. Veterans in attendance were asked to stand and receive recognition, followed by a moment of silence in honor of World War I service members.

“Each of us owe a debt to these and all Americans who have worn the cloth of the nation,” said Janice Hill, Hampton National Cemetery director. “We must keep a promise to those who serve, that their lives will not be forgotten and their sac-

The ceremony concluded with the playing of taps and attendees placing flowers on the graves of the fallen.

“We are the teachers of our children and it is up to us to instill in them the respect and honor due to our true American heroes,” said Corizzo. “Our fallen Soldiers, Marines, Sailors, Airmen and Coast Guardsmen deserve nothing less.”

74th FS pilots receive DFC

Two Airmen received the Distinguished Flying Cross May 23, 2018, in recognition of their actions in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.

Maj. Matthew “Chowder� Cichowski and Capt. William “Archer� Dana both, 74th Fighter Squadron A10C Thunderbolt II pilots, risked life and limb while deployed to Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, to protect Syrian Democratic Forces, or SDF, from a common enemy. “The bravery these two Airmen displayed in combat makes me extremely proud,� said Maj. Gen. Scott J. Zobrist, 9th Air Force commander. “You both demonstrated our aviators are the most highly capable professionals in the world.�

The DFC is awarded to someone who distinguishes themselves in support of operations by heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial ight. Dana and Cichowski were active on the same deployment but were recognized for their actions on separate missions.

Dana and his wingman were alerted by a joint terminal attack controller that the enemy had breached friendly lines in eight locations causing multiple casualties Aug. 14, 2017. “As soon as we checked in, there was an immediate need for support,� Dana said. “There was a sense of urgency felt. I needed to get out there quickly because good guys were dying.�

In a three-hour period, Dana employed 11,000 pounds of ordnance, killing 37 enemies and destroying 10 enemy defensive ďŹ ghting positions with no friendly losses.

While low on fuel, having few bombs remaining and pro-regime aircraft tracking his location, Dana elected to conduct an airstrike on enemies attacking friendly forces from a four-story building just 30 meters away. “At the point of weapons release, I trusted my training,� Dana added. “I had to account for the wind, because that affects where the ordnance drops, and with friendlies being that close, I wanted to take responsibil-

ity for everything. This is my weapon from my jet and the effects are on me.�

He accepted the risk and full responsibility for the danger-close attack and guided the weapon to the target, eliminating the enemy without any friendly injuries.

Throughout the deployment, mission after mission, the pilots of the 74th FS watched the enemies’ presence shrink and activity decline as they helped the SDF gain control of the region. However, toward the end of the deployment the enemy tried to regain control.

Cichowski was on a routinely scheduled combat mission Jan. 9, 2018, when he and his wingman were alerted by a JTAC to provide close-air-support for friendly forces who were taking ďŹ re. While successfully avoiding accurate surface-to-air ďŹ re, Cichowski led his wingman to strike enemy forces attempting to overrun friendly forces who were outnumbered 3-to-1. “We’d been diving a lot and had already been shot at once,â€? Cichowski added. “We started to realize this is a coordinated attack and not a random ďŹ ght like we originally thought. At this point, neither of us were strangers to combat with friendlies close. We knew what to do and how to correctly do it.â€?

Coordinating with a JTAC and synchronizing with a remotely piloted aircraft, Cichowski identiďŹ ed 25 enemy ďŹ ghters 150 meters away from friendlies. He employed a 2,000 pound joint direct attack munition and proceeded to use the GAU-8 gun at the nose of the A10C to wipe out the rest of the enemy while they countered with a barrage of anti-aircraft artillery. “We ensured we were all looking at the right thing, and checked and double checked so we didn’t get anything wrong,â€? Cichowski added. “We all trusted each other. At no point was I afraid we were going to make a mistake and drop bombs on friendlies or civilians.â€?

Cichowski escaped unscathed, thwarting the largest coordinated attack of enemy ďŹ ghters seen in that region without a single friendly loss. For this, Cichowski was awarded the DFC with valor, which is a distinction given to those who earn the DFC while engaged in direct

combat with exposure to enemy hostilities and personal risk. “DFC nominations are scrutinized very carefully, and every detail is validated to ensure facts are accurate,�

Zobrist added. “It was an honor for me to present them with the DFC. They are very rare decorations, and it reects highly on them and the entire 23rd Wing for their amazing accomplishments in supporting their nation.â€?

By the time these Airmen returned to Moody AFB, the SDF was able to take hold of most of their region and major cities were liberated. “It’s unbelievable to get a mission like this and to see the enemies’ control of the area shrink each week,�

Dana said. “The sense of pride I have to effect the ďŹ ght the way we did leaves me at a loss for words. None of us could do this without our wingmen, JTACs and the RPAs. The trust and information owing through the entire CAS team ensures we get the job done right.â€?

The recent restoration of 1st Lt. Jarvis Offutt’s grave was sparked when a Royal Air Force rivet joint specialist, assigned to RAF Waddington’s 56 Squadron visited the grave to pay respects to the former squadron member in December 2017, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Nebraska.

Offutt had been a part of the 56 Squadron for approximately a day before he died in flight over France.

Master Aircrew Keith “Nutty” Wing, 56 Squadron rivet joint specialist, visited the grave during a visit to Offutt Air Force Base as a liaison with the 55th Intelligence Support Squadron. Wing works in an operational test and evaluation role, in which he gathers data on RC-135 aircraft to provide information for RAF leadership, allowing them to make informed decisions.

Wing comes to Offutt AFB three or four times a year in a liaison capacity. The first time Wing visited Offutt’s grave was to lay a wreath on behalf of his squadron the day before he was due to return to the United Kingdom. Whilst there he noticed the grass had overgrown the gravestone and used his aircrew knife to trim it. This field cleanup revealed an inscription, which had been buried because the stone had sunk about five inches into the ground over many years.

the ground and make the inscription more legible, but the frozen ground prevented them doing as complete a job as he had hoped. The two even enlisted the assistance of two somewhat bemused ground maintenance workers to lend some stronger tools.

“Lt. Offutt was a member of my squadron on the day he died,” Wing said. “We have a saying on 56 Squadron — the emblem of 56 Squadron is the phoenix,

so they are known as ‘The Firebirds’ — and once a Firebird always a Firebird. It doesn’t matter that he’d only been with us one day, he was one of us. I would like to think someone would do something similar for me.”

Bauer and Wing work together during his liaison visits. When Bauer learned of Wing’s actions to improve the gravesite he began taking steps to improve it further.

“I told Nutty, ‘today I am honored and saddened,’” Bauer said. “Here you stand, a member of a foreign Air Force, making certain that a comrade’s grave is fit and proper for a man that was in your squadron for 24 hours, while the base named after him has apparently not been out here to see him for quite some time. I told Nutty that the RAF often comes to us saying that they are ‘cap in hand,’ but I would disagree. The RAF brings with it nobility, Esprit De Corps, a sense of history and teamwork that we seem to have lost. I promised that when the ground was no longer frozen I would have the headstone made proper. Today that was completed for Lt. Jarvis Offutt and the headstones of his whole family.”

The work to raise the headstone was completed May 1, 2018.

Wing was thrilled to hear that the gravestone had been preserved for the future. Now the full inscription of the headstone can be read, “First Lieut. U.S. Army Attached to 56th Squadron British Royal Air Force. Died Aug. 13, 1918— Valheureux, France.”

“That came as a big surprise when I found that out literally last week,” Wing said. “I was sat with Mr. Bauer in his office when he got a phone call from the cemetery to say that it had been done.

That was unexpected. I’ve been back to the grave since it has been raised, and it looks so much better.”

Red Cross Volunteer Dental Assistant Program By 633rd Dental Squadron 633RD DENTAL SQUADRON

JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, VA.

In June 2018, the 633rd Dental Squadron will launch its Red Cross Volunteer Dental Assistant Program. This six-month long program will provide volunteers with the requisite training to build a foundation for a career in dentistry. Volunteers will learn about dental instruments and equipment, oral anatomy, physiology, radiology, front-desk and reception duties, and will learn how to work chairside, hand-in-hand with dentists in all dental disciplines.

Volunteers should be enthusiastic people who are eager to learn various aspects of the challenging field of dentistry. The program is open to military family members and retirees ages 18 and up. Volunteers selected for the program will work full-time from 6:45 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. weekdays.

Upon completion of this challenging program, volunteers will receive an official American Red Cross Volunteer certificate of training. Although the certificate will not certify participants as dental assistants, it does create unique opportunities for graduates to work in the local community as civilian dental assistants.

Applications are now available at the Red Cross Volunteer Office inside the Joint Base Langley-Eustis Hospital. All applicants must undergo a background check.

During the first two weeks of training, volunteers will go through a public health screening and accomplish classroom training. The next phase consists of hands-on training where volunteers work alongside another assistant. During the final phase, volunteers will have the opportunity to assist Langley dentists on their own.

Traffic calming serpentine

In accordance with Department of Defense guidance regarding defending installations, Fort Eustis will implement a traffic calming serpentine as a measure to increase the installation’s security posture May 1, 2018, on Washington Blvd outbound lanes. The serpentine will reduce the number of outbound lanes from three to two.

This will impact outbound traffic, especially during rush hour. The serpentine will remain in place until completion of the Active Vehicle Barrier project which is expected in the month of August 2018.

The 633rd Medical Group strives to provide Trusted Care to all they serve, while supporting many deployed and home-station missions. Due to contract vacancies and multiple provider deployments/permanent changes of station during the coming months, it will take longer to receive appointments and have messages returned.

In light of these staffing concerns, TRICARE will temporarily enroll only Active Duty service members and their family members. This action is being taken to ensure patients receive the care they deserve within the established standards. There will be no enrollment changes or action taken to any patients who are already enrolled at the 633rd Medical Group, regardless of category.
