A U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor rips through the clouds toward its target, ready to engage, while an ominous patch of dark sky forms in the distance.

As the pilot closes in, the radio awakens and barks ‘abort mission’. The reason of aborting the mission is due to a massive thunderstorm that could cause catastrophic damage or possible death if it were to make contact with the aircraft.

These lifesaving calls are made by a 1st Operations Support Squadron weather forecaster at Joint Base Langley-Eustis.

“People could die,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Grant Kiekhaefer, 1st OSS weather forecaster. “People have been struck by lightning, planes swept out of the sky by turbulence and there are times when explosive thunder storms can take place in the blink of an eye.

Conditions (can develop) on top of aircrews and [sometimes] they can’t do anything about it and lives are lost.”

The weather information that is provided to pilots, dictates how the mission is planned, briefed and executed.

According to U.S. Air Force Capt. Zeus, 94th Fighter Squadron F-22 instructor pilot and flight commander, every morning the pilots rely on the weather flight to provide weather products before the pilots step for flight.

The weather briefs provided paint a picture of what air space is usable and what areas are restricted.

When providing weather briefs to pilots, the forecasters will gather every aspect related to weather that could affect take-off, in-flight and landing conditions to ensure the pilots can accomplish their mission on a real-life objective.

“When our guys have a real-life mission objective, they are going to have a precise location to where they are going to drop ordinance,” said Keikhaefer. “(Pilots) will give us the information of where the location is and then we use the tools we have to provide them with a target acquisition data forecast, which will give them very precise information on cloud depth, temperatures, dew points, wind, wind direction, sky condition and anything that could impact that ordinance from hitting its target.”

If a forecaster were to give pilots inaccurate weather information, not only is the pilot’s life in danger but civilian and friendly forces lives could also be adversely

affected.

“Without precise weather information, that could be the difference between enemy and civilian casualties,” said Keikhaefer. “If an ordinance falls 500 feet in the wrong direction that could make a world of difference for the civilians.”

The greatest reward for Keikhaefer is knowing the information he provided resulted in a successful and safe mission for the pilots.

“For me, it feels great,” said Keikhaefer. “Especially when I see an airplane takeoff and head into the conditions and elements, then have them come back safely.

That’s just a check in the box and a win for the weather crew.”

JBLE, local police train in domestic violence intervention

Officers and patrolmen of Joint Base Langley-Eustis, and Hampton Roads law enforcement community attended a Domestic Violence Intervention Training course, June 12 through June 16, 2017.

The course was hosted by the 3rd and 221st Military Police Detachment from JBLE, along with instructors from the U.S. Army Military Police School Behavioral Science Education Training and Mobile Training Team.

Geared to teach alternative techniques in communicating with victims, family members and accusers of domestic violence, the 40-hour course was provided for civilian and military law enforcement officers from Camp Peary, Newport News and JBLE. According to Larry Maxwell, DVIT instructor,

the course helps first responders understand the dynamics of victims and abusers.

“You can’t help solve the problem unless you understand the problem,” explains Maxwell. “Students learn how to approach the victim on a softer level, yet still get more detailed in-

formation from the victim about the abuse.”

During the week-long training, the officers received lectures, scenarios, writing assignments and had to give presentations on different subjects, which included multidisciplinary interventions, skills in assessing

and calming situations, response techniques and interview techniques.

On the last day of the course, the class met with Savannah Allison, a local domestic violence survivor, for an open discussion about her experience as a victim, and now, as a survivor.

Two years after the conviction of her former abusive boyfriend, Allison was strong enough to discuss her psychological scars to a room full of officers.

For Allison, having a male police officer explain to her that the abuse was wrong made it more impactful to her.

“If this statement would have come from a female, I would have ignored it,” said Allison. “All I saw was the uniform--not the emotional connection.”

According to U.S. Army Capt. Kyle Zdrojewski, 221st and 3rd MPD commander, training jointly helps law enforcement departments use similar processes, in hopes that the additional tools will allow them to better handle domestic-violence situations.

“The DVIT training provides a better understanding of the psychological, sociological and physiological break downs of what domestic violence can cause within the subject and victims, and how that can translate in learned behaviors in children,” said Zdrojewski,.

“This course allowed the students to receive more information that will allow them to better handle a domestic violence situation.”

At the end of the week, the officers and patrolmen graduated the course, knowing how to effectively navigate through a domestic violence call. The officers hope to take what they learned back to their departments enabling them to effectively handle domestic violence within their community.

New ID law affects JBLE access By 633rd Air Base Wing Public Affairs JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS

Beginning Oct. 10, 2017, Joint Base Langley-Eustis will begin enforcing more stringent ID policies in accordance with Federal Law passed in 2005. This will affect the ability to access the base with a Virginia state-issued ID. The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, ofďŹ cially went into effect June 6, 2017; however, the Department of Homeland Security issued a grace period for enforcing the act, which extends through Oct. 10, 2017.

According to the DHS website, the REAL ID Act

establishes a minimum security standard for stateissued driver licenses and identiďŹ cation cards and prohibits federal agencies from accepting for ofďŹ cial purposes, licenses and identiďŹ cation cards from states that do not meet the standards.

Per the DHS, once enforcement of the act begins, federal agencies and nuclear power plants may not accept for ofďŹ cial purposes, select driver licenses and state IDs. A complete and updated list of each state’s status can be found here: https://www. dhs.gov/real-id.

To gain access to JBLE, the following forms of

state or outlying possession of the United States not in current compliance with the REAL ID Act of 2005 or operating under an approved DHS extension will need an alternate form of identiďŹ cation.

People who require base access after Oct. 10 and do not have an accepted form of identiďŹ cation, an escort will be required. This rule also applies to those contractors and delivery personnel who previously had access to the installation with state IDs and authorization through an access list.

Two weeks later, the detachment assigned to the 92nd Engineer Battalion, inspected the piers at Third Port, located at Fort Eustis, to determine if repairs were required to keep the port operational. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Third Port is the Armyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s main vessel East Coast port,â&#x20AC;? said U.S. Army 1st Lt. Nate Cardinal, 74th Eng. Dive Det., 92nd Eng. Btn., executive ofďŹ cer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Third Port (staff) suspect there may be some erosion from beneath the piers. This could potentially weaken the structurally integrity and make it unsafe for heavy equipment and people to be working on the piers.â&#x20AC;?

As the Army Soldiers swam down, taking turns inspecting each part of the pier, the divers kept an eye out for any damage or irregularities that could cause catastrophic failure or massive reconstruction from occurring at the port in the future.

By performing these inspections and repairing minor damage, the dive detachment ensures the Armyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest active-duty port on the East Coast is in working condition.

The founding fathers of Langley

The “Langley” in Joint Base Langley-Eustis comes from Samuel Pierpont Langley, who served as Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution.

On August 22, 1834, history was born in Roxbury, Massachusetts, that would change the thoughts of flight in the United States of America.

At that time, Samuel P. Langley, for whom Langley Air Force Base would be named after, served as the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution and studied the possibility of heavier-than-air flight.

Although Langley’s steam powered Aerodrome number 5 was the first non-manned heavier-than-air flight, at just over one half mile in 90 seconds, the flight was ridiculed by spectators for the aircraft going nose up and into landing the river.

“His sense of failure was heightened on 17 December, when, in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, the Wright Brothers accomplished the first manned flight,” said William Butler, Air Combat Command deputy command historian.

“Although this success proved his theories about manned flight, Langley never resumed his experiments and he died from a stroke on Feb. 17, 1906.”

The base was later named after Langley by Lt. Colonel George O. Squier.

Brig. Gen. George Scriven established a board of officers and appointed Squier to the head of aviation for locating a suitable site to base an Army aviation field and conduct aeronautical experiments as Langley once did. The airfield would hold the official name

of “Langley Field” until August 7, 1917.

Once the location for the airfield was selected, the infrastructure was next in line.

Albert Kahn, a German immigrant, signed on to be the architect for the airfield structures.

According to Mark Stanley, ACC historian functional area manager, Kahn’s use of decorative brickwork surrounds us here at Langley AFB and it is easy to take the architecture for granted when it is seen every day.

“Visitors often remind us with remarks about Langley’s striking appearance. For that, we must take a moment to thank Kahn for his vision to create buildings that have stood the test of time,” said Stanley. “Today, those build-

7 ings remain useful, relevant and easy to admire.”

Langley, Squier and Khan are the beginnings of what Joint Base Langley-Eustis is today and it is fitting that the installation is joint with the U.S. Army, since this base began as an Army endeavor 100 years ago.

“These forefathers established the foundations for Langley Air Field, not knowing it would lead to an extraordinary 100-year history,” said Stanley. “Their work to construct Langley Air Field should never be forgotten and neither should the services rendered over the past century. The United States Air Force and Hampton, Virginia made significant contributions to aviation history and each day brings something new to expand upon the history our forefathers set in motion in 1917.”

CES Airmen navigate thro

As an improvised explosive device detonated, everyone dropped to the ground. For just one moment, there is silence, then shouts of assurance echo throughout the air.

Although just a training environment with simulated IEDs, the situation appeared real for the 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron Airmen donned in Kevlar vests and helmets.

The simulated situation was part of the 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron’s Prime Base Engineer Emergency Force land navigation and convoy training held at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, June 15, 2017.

The Prime BEEF training, held monthly, is designed to strengthen Airmen’s deployment skills and enhance readiness.

The training is conducted squadron-wide and each team may be comprised of Airmen from various sections within the 633rd CES, ranging from explosive ordnance detection, to pavement and construction equipment or water and fuels system management.

This month’s training included land navigation using maps, compasses and protractors, as well as convoy training with simulated-IEDs and testing situational awareness skills.

As rapidly-deployable units, 633rd CES Airmen

are required to provide a wide variety of engineering support in establishing, operating and maintaining garrison and contingency air bases.

According to U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Lloyd Swede, 633rd CES pavement and heavy equipment craftsman, although the Airmen may not regularly work alongside one another while at home station, that may change in a deployed environment.

“It’s important to do this type of training so our Airmen are familiar when they do deploy (together),” said Swede. “A lot of the time, CE Airmen get deployed with the Army, or get placed in (forward-operating bases) where they would have to perform movements like what we did today.”

With the advantage of being a joint base, U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. “Here, it’s almost real-world because you are running through the woods performing the maneuvers like you

would while deployed,” said Swede. “It was absolutely awesome being able to come use the (training areas) and facilities.”

The trainers also encouraged the Airmen, throughout the training, to communicate, learn each other ’s strengths and build morale, allowing them to train as a cohesive team to perfect their skills downrange.

“The mission — their lives — could be at stake

if they aren’t trained properly,” said Ross.

“This is all for deployment purposes. What we train here, we bring out into the field, and have to react properly if a situation occurs.”

Whether it’s training on the weapons range or obstacle course at Fort Eustis, the 633rd CES team is certain the real-world environment prepares their Airmen for when they go downrange.

Soldiers, community celebrate Army’s 242nd birthday

Members of the Joint Base Langley-Eustis and Hampton Roads community gathered to celebrate the U.S. Army’s 242nd birthday with a streamer ceremony and a Music Under the Stars concert, presented by the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command Band, June 15, 2017.

The evening’s event also included a streamer ceremony which concluded the week of birthday celebrations.

As this year marked 100 years since the U.S. entered WWI, the theme for the Army birthday was ‘Over there! A celebration of the World War I Soldier.’

“Our Army has come a long way in 242 years since its founding, and today’s force is transformed into the best trained and best led and most experienced force in the world,” said U.S. Army Maj. General Bo Dyess, Army Capabilities Integration Center commander. “But we take care to always remember that in our ranks is the most precious commodity our nation has to offer.”

As Music Under the Stars celebrates its 85th season, the musicians performed pieces written throughout the Army’s history, marking significant milestones in American military culture.

According to Dyess, the night’s celebration was to honor Soldiers of the past, but also to welcome new Soldiers into today’s Army. Dyess swore-in 35 Soldier recruits with the Oath of Enlistment during the ceremony.

member is that you’re not alone--you’re standing on the shoulders of millions of people who have raised their right hand and committed themselves to the service of our nation,” said Dyess as he addressed the future Soldiers. “I’m so proud of you for doing this tonight and so proud of the accomplishments that you’ll be able to do in the future in our Army.”

USO centers thrive through volunteer efforts

At Joint Base Langley-Eustis, the United Service Organizations, Inc. centers play a major role in supporting U.S. service members by providing morale events, a place to relax and a break from the stressors they may be facing. The backbone of these centers are the men and women who volunteer their time to keep them operational.

Across the eight USO centers in the Hampton Roads area, the facilities offer snacks and beverages, gaming consoles, pool tables, reading material and many other amenities.

While each location offers many amenities, the USOs at JBLE provide a little bit more. At the Fort Eustis center, licensed therapy dogs visit every Tuesday to increase morale, while at the Langley Air Force Base USO, Sadie, a one-year-old Irish Setter pet of Hannah Hendricks, Hampton Roads USO volunteer and special programs coordinator, “volunteers” to spend several days each week in the center.

Each location caters to a slightly different group, with primary use at Ft. Eustis being Advanced Individual Training students, and Langley AFB hosting mostly Airmen Leadership School students.

Both centers are also utilized by other service members, retirees, spouses and dependents.

The Fort Eustis USO hosts many events throughout the year supported by a large group of volunteers, including dances, children’s events, Paint ‘N’ Sip nights, holiday luncheons and the Adopt-ASoldier program at Thanksgiving.

The Langley USO hopes to host similar events across the installation in the future for service members, spouses and children, as they work to grow their volunteer base following a two-year closure for remodeling.

“Since many people didn’t know we reopened, we started from scratch with no volunteers so it was difficult,” said Hen-

dricks. “We’re finally starting to get a fuller schedule, but we’re always in need of more volunteers.”

For the USO centers at JBLE, operating on a consistent basis relies on the volunteers who run the centers daily.

“Without the volunteers, a lot of the USO centers wouldn’t be open as often or as many hours as they are,” said Hendricks. “Each location has little, to no, on-site paid staff so our volunteers are very important to us and the military personnel who utilize the centers.”

Volunteers include prior military, retirees, spouses, dependents

and active duty service members who volunteer for a variety of reasons. Kylie Wathen, whose husband, Staff Sgt. John Wathen, is currently deployed with the 192nd Fighter Wing, has volunteered for both JBLE USO centers.

“It’s a great way to give back to the troops who give so much,” said Wathen. “I’m happy to be a part of something that started in World War II and has carried forward to support the troops at home and abroad.”

SARM: Keeping warfighters on track

U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor pilots at Joint Base Langley-Eustis work closely with U.S. Air Force T-38 Talon pilots, who pose as adversary air, to improve their war-fighter capabilities.

However, before pilots can perform their duties, they must sharpen their skills and ensure they have proper documentation before they fly. T-38 pilots assigned to the 71st Fighter Training Squadron rely on a 3-person team, known as the squadron aviation resource managers, who ensure they are “good-togo” when it comes to being legally qualified to fly.

“We track all of the pilots’ training to make sure they’re good to fly,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Erica Mathiesen, 71st FTS NCO in charge of ARM. “The pilots are busy, so we are to here to monitor and let them know when they have stuff due.”

To ensure the best assistance is provided to approximately 38 pilots, the SARMs fill out and double check each member’s flight authorizations before they step out to the flightline.

“Flight authorizations are the forms we fill out once we’ve checked all of their training—it pretty much says they are legal to fly,” said Mathiesen. “If you’re working the desk (before the first flight of the day), you’ll come in, pull up the flight autho-

rizations we’ve done and recheck their documentation to make sure they are good-to-go.”

The SARMs’ responsibilities does not stop at tracking each pilot’s training. They also coordinate with several other offices to ensure a smooth transition from the ground to the air and vice versa.

“When the pilots come to land, they call us over the radio to give us their codes, which I information on if the jet’s good or if there are any issues (for us to pass on to maintenance) to let them know the status of the jets,” said Mathiesen. “We also coordinate with weather to have them come out to give the pilots a weather briefing if need be. Additionally, we also coordinate with base operations (to let them know) what flying routes the pilots are taking.”

In addition to keeping track of the pilots training and working with exterior organization, the SARMs also assist with the familiarization and incentive

flights where non-flyers get to fly in the back seat of the T-38 Talons.

“Once a person gets approved, for the Familiarization and Incentive Flight program (and) they’ve accomplished all of their training, they bring their documentation over and we’ll make sure they’ve completed everything required and have their approval letters,” said Mathiesen. “We then direct them to scheduling, so they can be scheduled to fly.”

Despite having to track the records of multiple members and programs, the SARMs acknowledge the importance of their duties, which drives their passion to get the job done.

According to Airman 1st Class Kevin O’Hara II, 71st FTS ARM journeyman, SARMs are essential to making the flight process as smooth as possible for each pilot.

“Our job is important because without us they won’t know if they can actually fly or some of them may not get flight pay if their (documentation) is not correct or not put in on time,” he said. “If we don’t input their training they may not get their currencies, (which they need) to continue flying.”

The SARMs actions help ensure aircrew members are equipped and ready to facilitate mission success.

They are a vital asset to ensuring adversary air is trained and ready to fly to contest the F-22 pilots stationed at JBLE.

Army Color Guard Honoring tradition with pride, precision

With synchronized, crisp facing movements and brisk commands, a group of U.S. Army Soldiers from the 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary) present the nation’s flag and Army flag during a memorial ceremony.

Though often seen as a nameless group, Soldiers who make up the installation Color Guard play a pivotal role in honoring tradition and paying respect to those serving, both present and past, in the Armed Forces.

“It’s a great way to remember anything and everything that is encompassed in that ceremony,” said U.S. Army Spc. Sebastian Washington, 588th Transportation Company, 10th Transportation Battalion, 7th Trans. Bde. (Ex.) welder machinist and member of the Ft. Eustis Color Guard training team. “From retirement ceremonies to changes of command, our job pays tribute to our nation’s colors, and the hard work and loyalty of those service members to the Army.”

Each quarter, a different battalion within the brigade is chosen to lead the color guard, allowing Soldiers from various jobs to step outside their career fields and work together to accomplish the mission.

“It’s a great way for the Soldiers to network with others within their battalion who might perform different duties in their day-today jobs,” said Staff Sgt. Darryl Tyson, 149th Seaport Operations Company, 10th Trans. Btn., 7th Trans. Bde. (Ex.) cargo specialist and Ft. Eustis Color Guard NCO in charge. “Being a part of the color guard helps them prepare for their future careers and become effective leaders, by learning to communicate with others with whom they don’t work with every day.”

During the first month, guardsmen train daily to perform facing movements, smooth transitions between commands, as well as proper flag and rifle duties and responsibilities. After they are able to perform these movements with ease, they continue to practice when they are not participating in a ceremony, to ensure their skills remain precise at all times.

“It’s important to practice

every day so no one gets too comfortable because that’s how we lose our sharpness during a ceremony,” said Tyson. “Our job is to be on our game at all times during ceremonies to recognize and pay the utmost respect to those individuals we are honoring.”

In addition to ceremonies on the installation, the Color Guard also participates in Joint Service Color Guard teams, working with other service branches to bring recognition to all of the Armed Forces at major events in the local community.

“Every branch has their own way of doing things and every branch thinks their way is the best,” said Washington. “Being part of a JSCG allows us to learn what others do, how they communicate and work together to decide what works best for each individual ceremony. We can then bring what we’ve learned back into our units and figure out how to use those techniques ourselves.”

With each performance, the Color Guard members honor those who serve currently and veterans who helped keep the United States and its people free and protected.

Enlisted Scholarship Award

The Langley Chiefs’ Group and Tuskegee Airmen Tidewater Chapter will begin offering the CMSgt Williams Scholarship program. The $1,000 Scholarship Award is awarded to recognize active duty U.S. Air Force enlisted members, E-1 through E-6 or a high school senior dependent of an active duty Air Force enlisted member, who has participated in or seeks to participate in higher education programs.

Air Force Reserve hosts Palace Front-Palace Chase informational sessions The Air Force Reserve will host Palace Front-Palace Chase informational sessions the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month at 10 a.m. in the 633rd Force Support Squadron auditorium, building 15 in Wing B, room 203. Palace Front is available to Airmen within 180 days of their projected separation date. New Sunday worship hours for Catholic and Protestant services

Langley 5/6 club hosts monthly meetings

The Langley 5/6 club will meet at 11:30 a.m. at the Bayview Commonwealth Center every second Wednesday of every month. A guest speaker joins the club every month to discuss various topics. JBLE Family Child Care Program

The Joint Base Langley-Eustis Family Child Care Program is looking for child care providers. They are searching for those interested in a professional, portable career that will allow those to stay at home and run a home-based business.

The program is available for children ages two weeks to 12 years old. Child care providers must be at least 18 years old be able to read and speak English, be in good health, and willing to undergo a background check.

The FCC will provide training and materials to get your business started. Training may include First Aid, CPR, health, safety, developmentally appropriate practices and child guidance. All individuals providing child care in their home for more than 10 hours a week must be licensed.

Trespass Notice

The Langley small arms firing range, adjacent area and the bullet impact area to the rear of the range are off-limits to all personnel. The firing range maintains 24-hour operations, seven days a week and is not open for the use of privately owned weapons. Due to gunfire, trespassing in this area is illegal and dangerous. Life lessons over lunch workplace study

Join the new Life Lessons over Lunch the first and third Thursdays of the month from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the 633rd Mission Support Group Conference Room. The Langley Chapel offers this marketplace initiative where participants meet on a regular basis to view a DVD message over lunch.

Life Lessons provides a unique opportunity for participants to enter an environment in the workplace where they can consider relevant insights around personal and professional challenges. The principles are presented from a biblical perspective but are non-denominational and open to all active-duty U.S. service members. A free lunch will be provided.
