New 633 ABW command chief shares expectations, objectives for position

U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Shane Wagner recently assumed the role of 633rd Air Base Wing command chief.

A veteran of 25 years, Wagner, enlisted as a weapons Airman before retraining into weather. After he was asked if he’d consider taking the Special Operations physical training test and challenged that he couldn’t do it anyway, Wagner took the test, passed it and joined the U.S. Air Force Special Operations Weather Team.

Wagner has served as the command chief of the 4th Fighter Wing, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina, and the 438th Air Expeditionary Wing, Forward Operating Base Oqab, Kabul, Afghanistan.

The Chesapeake native sat down to discuss his leadership philosophy, and his expectations and objectives for his time as command chief here.

1. What is your leadership philosophy?

I’ve worked with a lot of commanders that have shaped me as a senior leader and certain things that I use in my leadership philosophy.

Can’t to me is “capable and not trying.”

I don’t like people telling me they can’t, because they can. Maybe it’s not legal, moral or ethical, so it’s not authorized and I can handle that, but most of the time it’s “yes, what’s the question” and I’ll get you as close to “yes” as I can.

We’ve got to have the right communication and attitude to breed a future that enhances and encourages innovation of young Airmen because they are so smart. To come in here and hold that back, we’d be doing such a disservice to the Air Force.

You also have to have a positive attitude. You could have to do the worst mission in the world, but if you have a positive attitude it all of a sudden becomes better. If you hum and holler, and say “This is horrible.” then it’s going to get even worse.

U.S. Special Operations Command did a study, they found that it takes 46 people to put one operator on a target. One person doesn’t do their job, it doesn’t happen. I know there are people out there that have jobs that are not the shiny ones, but if I can get them to do it with a positive attitude, the culture will change. To emulate that from the top—I think it’ll spread. That’s why you’ll see me up on stage when the music is play-

ing during promotion ceremonies dancing around trying to lighten the mood, and I’ll joke around because it gets people in the right attitude for the day and if we can start each day with the right attitude, no matter what we have to face, it’s going to be okay.

2. What are your initiatives? How can we as Airmen help you achieve those?

There’s a lot of things we’re pressing forward with to try to make things better. Right now, I’m working with Col. Sean Tyler, the 633rd ABW commander, to stand up a mission enhancement flight to help out with some of the things we have going on around base. I want to do a bunch of continuous process improvement around the area to see how we can streamline processes to give Airmen their time back.

Additionally, I am working with the First Term Airman Course to have an inprocessing day at the end of the FTAC to do any in-processing they need. Then, when sending them back to their units, they are 90 percent signed in and ready to start their upgrade training.

Airman pulls civilian from tracks

“I could see the light in the tunnel when I was on the tracks, but I knew I could move the guy with enough time to go, plus I wasn’t willing to stand back and watch the guy get hit, knowing I didn’t do anything or try.�

These were the thoughts that ran through U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Damian Davies’ head as he made the spilt decision to assist an elderly man who fell on the train tracks in Brooklyn, New York.

The 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron facilities system superintendent and his family were waiting on the Manhattan-bound “A� Train at Nostrand Avenue in the wee hours of the morning on April 1, 2018. “I heard a loud ‘thud’ and people began shouting and screaming for the (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) clerk

to call the New York Police Department— initially I thought it was a ďŹ ght or scufe and someone was hurt,â€? Davies said. “I honestly didn’t think much, I felt a slight adrenaline rush and just dropped what I had in my hands and proceeded to jump on the tracks. Right before I jumped, I looked down the tunnel and knew I, if no one would help me, would get this guy off the tracks, so he didn’t die.â€?

Once the Sacramento, California native made it onto the tracks, he assessed the man, asking him questions like “Does your neck or back hurt?� and “Are you okay?�

He then directed a youngster to help him provide assistance. “I told a young kid I was going to grab this guy and lean him against the boarding step, (which was) about chest high to me,�

Redskins Training Camp: A touchdown with the troops

The United Services Automobile Association hosted a ‘Salute to Service’ event August 7, 2018, during the Washington Redskins Training Camp at Bon Secours Training Center in Richmond, Virginia.

Service members were split into ďŹ ve-person teams and competed in ďŹ ve events, including team ball catching, the gauntlet, 40-yard dash, L-drill and the vertical leap.

Afterwards, service members had free lunch and refreshments and were able to view the Redskins practice. When the practice was over, players posed for selďŹ es and signed shirts, hats, footballs and service members’ combat boots.

17 wings team up for AFE chemical response training

Twenty Aircrew Flight Equipment Airmen from 17 U.S. Air Force wings, representing four major commands, received training on the standardized procedures for an Aircrew Contamination Control Area at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, July 9-13, 2018.

The five-day course began with classroom instruction and then hands-on training to gain first-hand knowledge of how to stand up and effectively operate a 9-stage ACCA during a chemical incident.

The exercise tested Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nu-

clear capabilities in an attempt to validate AFE response teams. The teams consist of 18 AFE Airmen who would respond to any chemical environment worldwide to keep operations flowing and personnel safe.

“As we walk (aircrew members) through the line, we want to make sure we are getting all the (chemicals) off of them,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Inishia George, 436th Training Squadron AFE instructor. “We have a bleach solution and M295 decontamination mitts that we pat them down with. The 441st Vehicle Support Chain Operations Squadron showcases the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle during the Vehicle Transformation and Acquisition Council conference at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, Aug. 8, 2018. The 1st Operations Support Squadron air trafc control team at Langley Air Force Base has been awarded the Air Force-level 2017 D. Ray Hardin Air Traf c Control Facility of the Year for the second consecutive time.

The prestigious award is presented to ATC facilities that execute superior capabilities through seamless operations while ensuring safety and ef ciency.

Facilities are also evaluated on improvements, innovative performance and non-standard operations in alliance with the National Airspace System.

“This is a huge accomplishment,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Kerry Hall, 1st OSS tower

chief controller. “I think this second win validates our team and it really shows our career eld, and the Air Force, what kind of Airmen we have here at Langley.”

According to Hall, ATC’s have not received consecutive Air Force-level and major command-level D. Ray Hardin award wins since 1963.

Teamwork is crucial in an air traf c control tower, Hall continued, the fast-paced environment requires clear communication between team members while they work with several different agencies to coordinate aircraft movement.

“Our team works well together, and we have each other’s backs,” said Senior Airman Derek Robertson, 1st OSS air traf c controller. “Controllers who have worked here for a while will take new Airmen under

August 17, 2018 their wing and work to help them develop into a rated controller.”

According to Robertson, the team’s training methods and open communication are also key elements to their success because each controller depends on their counterparts for support in the tower.

When new Airmen are not working live-traffic operations, they are practicing with the program simulator to cultivate the con dence and ability to aid their teammates.

“I consider us more of a family than a team, and I think the environment that we have fostered was key to bringing home that second win,” Hall said. “The camaraderie in this of ce is outstanding. Our Airmen are able to humble themselves, accept that they don’t know everything and understand that they can accomplish more as a team than as individuals.”

As the team accepts recognition for their hard work, Hall continued, they are using the award as motivation to propel the themselves through another successful year. An ATC facility has yet to take home three consecutive wins; however, the Langley air traf c controllers are setting their sights on the possibility of making history.

“Of course we’re going for a three-peat,” Hall said. “In my mind we already got it. First you have to speak it, believe it, and eventually it will come to reality. We’re already speaking it. We just come to work, do our job to the best of our ability and we let our work speak for itself.”

draw all these people with common interest together and keeps them doing things that they’re interested in that is healthy and doesn’t let the opportunity for destructive behaviors to set or be temptations. You all get together, share ideas and have little events.

3. What do you expect from us as Airmen?

That’s simple: It’s to have fun every day and smile. Everybody hears the same thing, “Learn your job.” That’s a given, it’s in our core values— “Excellence in all we do.” I can say that, but you’re going to do that anyway. I want you to smile, I want you to have fun and I want you to remember to take time for your family. The Air Force will be here tomorrow.

The important thing for Airmen to remember is life balance is huge. Eventually you’re going to hang up this uniform. Don’t run out of family before you run out of career—it happens too often. If you can’t do it, then come talk to me—let’s work through this.

According to Davies, fate led him and his family to this location, so he could help save a life.

“I never thought something like this would happen to me, but I do believe everything happens for a reason,” Davies said. “Honestly, we were not supposed to be at that station.

We were supposed to take the “Q” Train from Prospect Park, Brooklyn straight to 34th Street in Manhattan. Instead I did what I always do and thought about quicker options. (When) I initially I thought there was a fight of some sort, I immediately thought ‘Seriously, this would happen to me with my family because I decided to take a detour.’”

Although helping the elderly man meant putting himself in danger, Davies said it was worth it.

“As corny as this may sound, it feels good to help people,” he said. “I put a front on just like everyone else that I don’t care, but we cannot continue to operate selfishly as a society.”

Davies hopes his act of kindness is paid forward in some way. He continues to live life by his personal motto: “You only have one life, take advantage of every opportunity and it’s okay to take risks!”

4. What are your primary goals for your time here?

My main goal is to make sure we are supporting every mission partner out here seamlessly.

From this office’s perspective, the communication and transparency with our mission support partners could be better and I’m going to make sure that happens.

I want to make sure everybody knows what’s going on. I’m going to be pushing and over communicating a lot. That’s one of the things you’re going to see from my office—information overload, so people are informed.

5. Where do you expect to take us?

Col. Tyler is all about the mission partners and very much about the Airmen and making sure they have what they need.

We also want to strengthen and expand our spouses’ programs.

Our spouses are our mission partners too. You and I serve, but our family members sacrifice. It’s a new Air Force and were going to step up and see it. If I’ve got to do the heavy lifting and I only get it an inch off the ground, then we’ll get it an inch off the ground. That

is what I’m going to be pushing.

6. What is your impression of the 633rd ABW so far?

The professionalism you guys have shown already is amazing and I just need to make sure I remove barriers for you and provide whatever you need to keep that positivity going. That is what I need to do and that is what I’m going to do.

7. Do you have final thoughts?

I just want everybody to realize that I’m not like any other chief you’ve met. This is the only way I know how to be as crazy and approachable.

I didn’t make chief, I had Airmen that made me chief.

I try to keep myself grounded because you never want to forget where you came from and every stripe I wear below the top chevron, I owe back. That means I have to work myself to death to make sure I give it back and that’s what I’m going to do.

Anybody can come up and talk to me, my door is always open. As an Airman with PTSD and having suffered for so long, and hid it for so long. I hid it because you didn’t show weakness in special tactics, you didn’t go to mental health back then and eventually it caught up to me.

John Timothy “Tim” Corrigan passes away

John Timothy “Tim” Corrigan, 61, passed away on Saturday, August 11, 2018. Tim bravely served his country as a fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years. He briefly flew the F-4 Phantom before meeting his true aviation love – the F-15(C) Eagle. He retired in 2001 as a Lieutenant Colonel, and continued to serve the fighter pilot community as an F-15 and F-22 simulator instructor. He took enormous pride in teaching his young F-22 pilots, and left no detail to chance in ensuring their safety and success as

the world’s best fighter pilots. Tim Corrigan was a family man. He volunteered as a baseball umpire and lacrosse coach, and helped coach the Tabb High School Girls Varsity Lacrosse to a district championship.

Over our lifetime of weekend road trips, Mr. Corrigan never met a historic point of interest he didn’t like or could ignore. (Cue, groans from the back of the Astro Van.) In his company, we felt cherished, special, and loved. Having lost his father at the age of ten, he was a devoted son and brother. Tim is preceded in death by his father, Joseph Francis

you walk around life with a ruck sack and throw a rock in there every day, you’ll be able to walk around for a very long time filling that ruck sack up, but eventually that ruck sack is going to get full.

If you create those rocks—that stress in your life—that you’re not getting help for, eventually these rocks are going to start falling out or the worst thing that could happen—that ruck sack rips and it all comes out and bad things happen.

That’s what happened with me.

I got to that point and I needed help. I still see mental health, I see a psychologist and a psychiatrist, I’m open about it, I’ve got nothing to hide, but I’m still a command chief and I still have my clearance. If I can ask for help, you can ask for help, and if you can’t, and you want talk to somebody who has been through it, here’s my number, call it or text me. I won’t ask your name unless you tell me. It’s too important for people to stress over this stuff when there’s resources out there. “The biggest reason (for this exercise) is to ensure that we are proficient in a chemical environment so we can take care of our aircrew members,” said Master Sgt. Michael Doane, 436th Training Squadron node operator.

Along with the career field briefings, individuals also got the opportunity to take part in a vendor showcase where General Services Administration vendors demonstrated tools, new technology and vehicles.

One of the main attractions of the vendor showcase was the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, which will replace the Humvee in fiscal year 2019. The JLTV program is led by the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps, and offers greater capabilities in terms of payload capacity, survivability and performance.

Throughout the week, participants were given the opportunity to attend six different classes geared towards their career field, two of which were Community College of the Air Force accredited.

“I think it’s very important that our people are trained on […] how to use new advancements in our career field,” Pestilos said.

Covering everything from the changes in the career field, logistics, manning, training and budgeting, the 441st VSCOS makes sure that VTAC works to increase the livelihood of vehicle management, ensuring vehicle management Airmen and civilians across the Air Force have all the tools, knowledge and technology they need to complete their mission.

Night Fire at Langley Range

The Langley Security Forces will be conducting night fire classes from 8-11pm on August 23rd and 30th. SFS ask for patience and understanding as they train our Defenders to fight in all conditions and maintain a safe and secure environment for the residents of Langley Air Force Base. During this time period SFS will also bring experts in to study the noise and propose solutions in efforts to reduce noise generated by night firing.

Fishing at Browns Lake

Catch and release fishing is allowed at Brown’s Lake on Fort Eustis, but only from the pier. Patrons are not permitted to launch boats or kayaks off the shorelines to fish on the lake, as doing so would cause disturbance of the lake sediment. The United States Army Transportation Museum on Fort Eustis hours of operation has changed. The previous hours of Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., has changed to Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Trespass Notice

The Langley small arms firing range, adjacent area and the bullet impact area to the rear of the range are off-limits to all personnel. The firing range maintains 24-hour operations, seven days a week and is not open for the use of privately owned weapons. Due to gunfire, trespassing in this area is illegal and dangerous.
