Round 3: UFC fighters and MMA celebs visit JBLE By 633rd Air Base Wing Public Affairs Three athletes from the Ultimate Fighting Championship and three Mixed Martial Arts celebrities will visit Joint Base Langley-Eustis, September 7-9, 2017.

Dubbed “Round 3”, the MMA Junkie Radio tour makes their third trip to JBLE since December 2016. Hosts “Gorgeous” George Garcia and Brian “Goze” Garcia will bring UFC fighters Miesha Tate, Paul Felder and Colby Covington along with famed cutman, Jacob “Stitch” Duran to meet service members and their families.

Tate is the former UFC female bantamweight champion of the world. Felder, a UFC lightweight contender, has won four out of his last five fights and Covington, ranked 8th in welterweight division, is on a four-fight winning streak. Duran has worked the top boxing and mixed martial arts contests in the world is also a U.S. Air Force veteran.

During their visit, they will tour different units across the installation, host a self-defense seminar and conduct public meet-and-greet sessions.

“We have an exciting group of some of the top names in MMA, and they, along with my brother Goze, Stitch and I, look forward to shaking some new hands and seeing returning faces from our previous visits,” said Garcia.

Gorgeous George, Goze and Duran previously toured along with UFC athletes to deployed locations in Southwest Asia. The visit to JBLE marks the first time on a military installation for Tate, Felder and Covington.

“There is such a strong connection between the brave men and women of the armed forces and the sport of Mixed Martial Arts,” said Garcia. “It gives us a lot of confidence to know that these are the warriors protecting us and our way of life. I know I speak on behalf of the athletes when I say we are excited and humbled to meet each of you, our nation’s heroes.”

‘Music Under the Stars’ 85th season goes out with a ‘bang’

More than 700 people attended the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command Band’s 85th season finale performance of the “Music Under the Stars” summer concert series at Fort Eustis’ Magnolia Park, Aug. 31, 2017.

This was the last of 14 free public concerts held over the summer. The concert featured the U.S. Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps and TRADOC Salute Battery as part of the finale’s theme, “Overture 1812.”

The band performed a wide variety of tunes, ranging from military band staples like “Armed Forces Salute,” and Ryan Nowlin’s “Let Freedom Ring,” to pop and jazz, such as Benny Goodman’s “King of Swing.”

This season, the concerts offered a

mixture of events with the musical performances, including a classic car and family fun night.

According to U.S. Army Maj. Randy Bartel, TRADOC Band commander and conductor, each year the band looks to appeal to everyone, from young fans to old.

“Since it is our 85th year, I must say a special thank you to our patrons,” said Bartel. “Thanks to our community, we have been able to welcome, counting tonight’s audience, over 4,000 people this summer. Joint Base Langley-Eustis, TRADOC and the U.S. Army is humbled and proud that we can offer this event.”

Bartel said his, and many of the musicians’, favorite memory from the summer season is supporting the veterans who show up every week for their performances. » See MUTS | 4

He has attended the show for more than 25 years, and plans to keep attending each summer.

“Every year seems to be a different experience,” said Patenotte. “If you haven’t had the chance to come, it’ll be well worth your while.”

For both the musicians and guests, everyone seems to enjoy one part of the finale the most.

“It has to be the guns,” said Bartel. “I’m a fan like anyone else. I think it’ll always be something the American public looks forward to.”

After an incredible season, Bartel and his team hope to keep the rich tradition of “Music Under the Stars” alive for the Fort Eustis community.

After the blast; life of an EOD tech

“I mean obviously getting blown up six days before coming home, those are the days I don’t forget,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Timothy Donnan, 633rd Civil Engineer Squadron Explosives Ordnance Disposal team lead. “I’m never going to forget.”

BEFORE THE BLAST

At 17 years old, Donnan decided to join the military and initially wanted to join the Air National Guard as a security forces member as he thought this would secure him a slot in his dream job as a federal agent. However, after finding no open military police positions, his recruiter recommended Donnan speak with an EOD Airman.

Donnan took her advice and went with his father to meet a senior master sergeant who had roughly 20 years of experience and multiple deployments as an EOD member.

“My dad knew the minute that he asked ‘do you want to drive a robot?’, that was the minute he knew he lost me to EOD,” exclaimed Donnan. “I said ‘heck yeah I want to drive a robot’ and I signed up immediately.”

After graduating basic training and finishing technical training school, Donnan reunited with his guard unit where he received 90 days of training.

As an Air National Guardsman, Donnan found it difficult to acquire all the training needed to gain certification in his career field. But, it was 2008, and opportunities to deploy and go on active orders were plentiful as troops shipped out to Iraq and Afghanistan.

After consistently searching for ways to stay on active orders or deploy, Donnan finally got word that he would deploy to Afghanistan in 2012.

DEPLOYMENT

While on his deployment, Donnan was attached to a quick response force allowing him go on over 130 combat missions.

“What we do, it just happens to be

when something bad happens. We are dealing with explosives,” said Donnan.

“When something does happen, it’s pretty catastrophic, whether it’s losing a limb or possibly being killed in action.”

That possibility became a reality for Donnan, just six days before he was supposed to go home.

“It’s funny, the number two (on the team) told me that during the winter (in Afghanistan) nothing ever happens,” he said.

Donnan’s team was called out to a post-blast after a vehicle was hit by an Improvised Explosive Device. When their vehicle was within a hundred feet of that vehicle, it was hit by an IED. “I was up in the turret for the about-50pound blast underneath our vehicle that went off. I still have things that kind of reflect what happened like my memory loss and issues that I have that came from getting blown up. I deal with them on a daily basis,” explained Donnan. “But it honestly was a great deployment for me.

I truly do love this job.”

According to Donnan, EOD member are perceived as “jokesters’ and light, but when it come to their job, they are very serious, as it is extremely dangerous.

For Him, although it is dangerous and you can get hurt, the job is really about saving lives.

“Every IED (you) take away is saving someone, whether it’s a local national, whether it’s U.S. military or whether it’s a foreign military. It’s saving someone from being blown up in a vehicle and actually suffering any physical injuries,” said Donnan. “You know by taking that out, by not allowing an IED to actually go off the way it’s supposed to go, you know you’re saving something (and someone), that is a great feeling.

Although his vehicle was unexpectedly struck and he received a Purple Heart, changing his life forever, it didn’t change his mind about the job he chose to do.

He knew he still wanted to become an active duty Airman, so after only a week back in the U.S., Donnan took steps towards his future.

“The minute I got back to the states, I knew this is all I wanted to do. I

immediately went and saw a recruiter,” said Donnan. “There were some hiccups because of having prior service injuries and being blown up but after a year of pursuing that I finally got active duty orders.”

While Donnan credits this deployment for shaping him into the technician he is today it was more than his comrades and the training that brought him to where he is now. The blast that would break some became an eye opener for more than his work life.

FAMILY

At the time of Donnan’s deployment, he was in a committed relationship with his girlfriend Julie. He knew, since she stuck by him through the deployment, and the IED blast, that she was right for him.

“Honestly one of the reasons why we got engaged is because she survived that deployment, and it was a tough deployment,” said Donnan. “It was my first one and it was a tough one, but she survived it. When I got back and told her I want to go active duty, she

supported me.”

For Donnan, having that significant other helped him then, as well as now, especially when times get tough.

“A lot of us have friends that have been killed. Those anniversaries come up, and sometimes you get bummed out during that week. That’s one of the things when you have a spouse that they understand,” he explained. “They’ll support you through those timeframes because they come up every year.

Having that spouse that you can vent and talk to definitely helps quite a bit.”

According to Donnan, through not only the support of his wife Julie Donnan, who is now a captain in the U.S. Air Force, but the support of his family, he has found a job that he truly loves.

“They know, I think my wife knows too, the only way I’m ever going to end this job is whether I get injured, I retire or if I end up getting killed. That’s probably the only way I’m ever going to stop,” said Donnan with a smile. “That’s how important it is to me, I’m going to do this until I can’t do it anymore.”

To encourage people to use the course, Alpha Warrior is holding a competition November 11, 2017 in San Antonio.

Alpha Warrior is accepting the top male and female with the fastest times from 15 regions, and the top 10 male and female overall times, for a total of 50 candidates.

Alpha Warrior will then fly the 50 candidates to San Antonio to compete in the competition, which will be treated as a temporary duty assignment. While the course is open to everyone, the competition is only open to Air Force Active-Duty members or Reservists on active orders.

Joint Base Langley-Eustis is holding their pre-qualifications at the Community Commons Oct. 14, 2017, and a regional competition on Oct. 21, 2017. The Community Commons is also holding training at 1-3 p.m. on September 25, 2017, for individuals who may not know how to properly use the equipment, but still wish to use the course.

“The whole point for it being open now is for people to practice,” said Garcia.

“Get your times up, improve your grip strength and work on your endurance.

So, practice now, grab a buddy and just go through the rig.”

Air Force crosses obstacles for better fitness 633RD AIR BASE WING PUBLIC AFFAIRS

The Battle Rig – that’s the name of the obstacle course that opened in Early August at Langley Air Force Base’s Community Commons.

The Battle Rig, which is open to everyone with a government ID, was built by the Alpha Warrior Company to encourage individuals to apply functional workouts to their fitness programs.

“It works muscles and muscle groups that you may not work out regularly,” said Jim Anderson, the Air Force Services Activity business and recreation branch chief at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas. “(It works) muscles that you may use in your day-to-day work environment and your personal environment.”

The rig consists of many obstacles that use the upper body, core muscles and most of all, grip strength.

The rig is not just for individual use however, it’s a great opportunity for groups and units to work out and do different kinds of physical training together.

“This is something new and something fun for people to experience,” said U.S. Air Force 2nd Lt Anthony Garcia, 633rd Force Support Squadron chief of the fitness and sports section. “Some people don’t like lifting weights for a long period of time, they’d rather experience

Soldiers reaffirm commitment to South Korean defense in annual exercise

JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR HICKAM, Hawaii — Key leaders, senior and junior Soldiers from the 94th Army Air and Missile Defense Command joined U.S., Korean and United Nations forces in the Republic of Korea for the annual exercise Ulchi Freedom Guardian from Aug. 21-31.

Ulchi Freedom Guardian, also known as UFG, is a U.S. and Republic of Korea defense-oriented war-fighting exercise conducted annually to enhance readiness and protect the region while maintaining stability on the Korean Peninsula.

The exercise is modeled in computersimulated scenarios designed to engaged government and military organizations in reacting to numerous crisis scenarios, including those involving the civilian population on the peninsula. Although

part of the exercise is computer simulated, South Korean forces train in real-life action exercises to ensure they are prepared for potential terrorist, chemical or weapon attacks.

There are approximately 28,000 service members stationed in South Korea, and an estimated 17,500 of them participated in UFG. They joined military forces from multiple South Korean units from all branches of service, as well as forces from the United Nations Command participating in the exercise.

As the burn sets in after each rep and the hunger from losing weight attempts to occupy his mind, the legendary words of Muhamad Ali echoed in his head “impossible is nothing.”

That mantra is what U.S. Air Force 1st Lt. James LaCoste, 633rd Force Support Squadron career development chief, used to stay level-headed during the Organization of Competition Bodies’ Colonial Open bodybuilding competition at the Williamsburg Crosswalk Church, July 1, 2017. This was the first ever body building competition for LaCoste, who placed third with no professional trainer or coach.

The competition offered three different categories for both male and female entrees which included bodybuilding, classic bodybuilding and physique.

LaCoste was critiqued by six judges, against approximately 90 other competitors.

Although LaCoste’s interest in competitions were new, his determination and commitment to his fitness goals weren’t. Football was his passion, and as an adolescent, he started training with his father to build his body’s size, strength and functional speed.

LaCoste wanted a scholarship to play football—his hard-work in the gym and on the field garnered the attention of the U.S. Air Force Academy.

“I’ve been training since I was 13 years old, but most of the training was about strength and weight gain because I was a football player,” said LaCoste. “I knew I wanted to play college football, so I needed to be big. It was a huge priority and it was two hours every single day with the team in the gym doing our lifting thing, so I had to go.”

During his time on the Air Force Academy’s team, coach Matt “Getty” McGettigan was

the dedicated strength and condition coach for the players. Coach Getty preached functional strength as it related to each team member ’s position, explosion, quality repetitions and proper form. He also focused on proper nutrition and hydration.

According to LaCoste, Getty would kick players out of the gym if they weren’t focused, because their time in the gym was short, so each minute was allotted to a workout—this instilled in him greater discipline.

“I learned a lot from coach Getty,” said LaCoste.

“The techniques that he taught me has stayed with me throughout the years, helping me create work-out plans for myself and for the people I work out with.”

Upon graduating from the Academy, fitness continued to follow LaCoste as he became an officer within the 633rd FSS. During his first job at the Shellbank Fitness center, LaCoste was in charge of purchasing equipment and determining the needs of the gym patrons. He also helped hire personal trainers and conducted research on specialized events like powerlifting, warrior challenges, obstacle courses and other events different fitness organizations would run.

As a leader within the squadron, LaCoste understood that he had to uphold the standards, which in turn meant he had to as well, because of this, LaCoste has never scored anything lower than an excellent on his physical training test.

“If I’m going be out there telling my Airman to meet the standards, I better be, if not upholding them, then exceeding them,” said LaCoste. “I think you should be exceeding them if you’re in a leadership position.”

Though weight training is a major factor in preparation for body building competitions such as the Colonial Open, proper eating and dieting are equally as important.

According to LaCoste, he began preparation for the

competition while deployed to Afghanistan. While deployed, he felt as though he had more time to focus on his training and it was easier to meal prep.

“This prep was completely different for me, it’s about being cut and lean, so for me that meant losing a lot of weight, so it was a very different experience,” said Lacoste. “My caloric intake is normally 4000 calories, but I would reevaluate it every two weeks, depending upon how much weight I lost I would adjust it again. It dropped to 2000 calories five weeks out, and then I increased my cardio so my intake wouldn’t drop any lower.”

For LaCoste, having a dining facility prepare his food for him was an advantage, but it was also the biggest challenge he faced when he returned home.

“Being deployed, you know you don’t have all the luxuries of dining out, and I wanted to dine out,” said LaCoste. “More of the challenges were when we traveled to see family, everyone wants to have big parties and barbecues and I’m sitting there with my salad and chicken.”

Temptation of breaking his diet wasn’t the only challenge LaCoste faced. Since returning from his deployment, he wanted to spend as much time with his wife and daughter as possible. This required him to cut-back his sleep in order to spend more time with family. Waking up at early hours in the morning to train, so by the time his wife and daughter woke up, he was already done working out for the day.

“I believe in doing things that make you uncomfortable,” said LaCoste. “(The competition) was so uncomfortable, but it was a good experience.

I think that those uncomfortable experiences and challenges are what help you grow and improves your ability to lead.”

“This exercise allows us to further develop missile defense processes and procedures and to both reaffirm and strengthen the alliance between the United States and the Republic of Korea,” he added.

Chambless is no stranger to this type of exercise; he has been involved in five iterations of UFG in some capacity or another over the years. The exercise also provides an opportunity for junior Soldiers to experience and be prepare to manage real world situations in the unit.

“This exercise benefits me as a soldier working in the G4 because it made me oversee what my section does in the real world by supporting and providing units with resources that will help protect and win the fight,” said Spc. Virginia Lopez, a unit supply specialist assigned to the unit’s logistics directorate.

At all levels, from junior to senior Soldiers, the exercise provides the 94th AAMDC with viable military options to sharpen the unit’s ability to support the Indo-Asian Pacific Region with air and missile defense assets when required.

The unit’s participation in Ulchi Freedom Guardian also demonstrates the tangible U.S. commitment to the defense of the Republic of Korea and its allies as well as the security and stability of the Korean Peninsula and the Pacific region.

64th ARGS: Sharpening sword for combat air forces

NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. (AFNS) — The 64th Aggressor Squadron and its pilots have handled the mission of preparing combat air forces as well as joint and allied aircrews to win any fight, any time, since 1972.

Through these sorties and support, the pilots of the 64th ARGS prepare forces to strengthen alliances through the highest level of combat training and preparation.

The pilots provide realistic threat replication for all airframes that travel to Nellis Air Force Base for training, most importantly during the U.S. Air Force’s premier air-to-air combat exercise, Red Flag.

Once Red Flag hits, Aggressor pilots fly day and night missions as opposing forces by providing the highest level of training possible to maintain readiness.

“It’s nothing short of a moral obligation to ensure that we establish air superiority quickly whenever and wherever it’s required,” said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein.

To maintain this level of readiness, during Red Flag, pilots’ days are dominated by flying missions followed

by briefs before and afterward, said Capt. Danielle Kangas, the 64th AGRS chief of training.

For the Aggressors, select pilots have the added responsibility of being adversaries, said Kangas.

“Our job is to know the threats the United States faces, become subject matter experts on those threats, and be able to teach our combat squadrons the air capabilities those threats possess,” said Kangas. “We have to accurately replicate these threats to provide the most realistic training possible. We are the go-to for adversary tactics, capabilities and limitations.”

The 64th ARGS also supports the U.S. Air Force Weapons School and Mobile Training Teams to teach aggressor academics and provide flying support, said Kangas.

Through these sorties and support, the pilots of the 64th ARGS prepare joint and allied forces to strengthen our alliances through the highest level of training and preparation.

“We not only have a detailed understanding of how we plan and execute tactically in the United States, but it requires a very detailed understanding and knowledge of all threats,” said Kangas. “We are the (subject matter experts) on our adversaries.”

Hawaii National Guard hazmat specialists ready to respond to real-world incidents

By Air Force Senior Airman Orlando Corpuz 154th Wing PACIFIC MISSILE RANGE FACILITY BARKING SANDS, Hawaii — Hazmat specialists from the Hawaii National Guard’s 93rd Civil Support Team are ready to support ďŹ rst responders in case of a potential biological, chemical, or radiological attack after participating in a training exercise here, Aug. 28-30.

The Kauai County Exercise 2017 is a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, explosive threat and response three-day training event testing the coordination between federal, state, county and nongovernmental units responding to natural or manmade hazmat incidents.

A host of ďŹ rst responders ranging from Kauai County Police and Fire departments, Hawaii Department of Health, PaciďŹ c Missile Range Facility, Kauai Emergency Management Agency, and National Guard civil support teams from Hawaii, Guam, Alaska and Utah came together to practice and validate the tactics, techniques, and procedures needed to effectively respond to a realworld CBRNE incident.

Civil support teams are joint Army and Air National Guard units designed to support local, tribal, state and federal emergency response organizations in the event of a large-scale terrorist attack or where speciďŹ c technical capabilities to identify CBRNE materials are required. They also have access to other technical and analytical experts who can assist, if needed.

The 93rd Civil Support Team is made of eighteen Hawaii Army National Guard soldiers and four airmen from the Hawaii Air National Guard.

Large exercises such Kauai County Exercise 2017 are held throughout the year within different counties, with planning for the exercise starting one year in advance.

The PaciďŹ c Missile Range Facility, with its large area and multitude of structures, allowed exercise planners to develop complex and challenging scenarios.

Simulated drug cooking labs, hostile personnel, and bunkers with possible anti-personnel traps were some of the challenges posed to ďŹ rst responders.

AFNORTH wraps up Hurricane Harvey ops, looks East to Irma

TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. (AFNS) — As Hurricane Harvey slammed into coastal Texas the last week of August, Houston and the surrounding area were pounded with unprecedented amounts of rain – experiencing 50 inches of rain in a matter of days. That is more than the annual average for the region.

Flash flooding decimated the region, putting extreme stress on local and state resources available to provide relief and rescue efforts to the Texans who needed it.

Within days, the state government requested the aid of Defense Department resources through the Federal Emergency Management Agency. In response, Air Forces Northern stood up a crisis action team to direct aerial operations of federal military assets supporting the relief effort for the tens of thousands of people displaced from their homes.

“I am proud of this outstanding team of professionals who carried out a critical mission, especially our search and rescue

effort, in the wake of this catastrophic storm,” said Lt. Gen. R. Scott Williams, the AFNORTH commander. “This was a total force effort to support our federal, state and interagency partners as we collectively responded to those in need.

Our ability to work hand in hand with active (duty), (Air National) Guard and reserve military forces, as well as U.S. Coast Guard and Customs and Border Protection assets, was a complete success.”

Air Force, Army, Navy and Marine units from across the continental U.S., along with the Coast Guard and Air Force Auxiliary Force (Civil Air Patrol), banded together with state and local agencies to provide enhanced search and rescue, communications and aerial imagery collection during recovery efforts.

Of the more than 16,800 individuals rescued by the Department of Homeland Security, Coast Guard, Customs and Border Protection, FEMA and DOD, 2,078 search and rescue operations were coordinated through Tyndall Air Force

The Search and Rescue Operations Coordination Element provided centralized control and prioritization of federal military search and rescue forces to ensure the greatest unity of effort to save lives, prevent human suffering and mitigate great loss of property.

In addition to the search and rescue efforts, the Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations Center requested AFNORTH assistance for airborne command and control over devastated areas of Texas.

The 601st Air Operations Center, which is the operational arm for AFNORTH, employed an E-3 Sentry and E-8 Joint Stars as well as a Navy E-2 Hawkeye to fill the role of a communications relay and act as a tactical hub between the Western Air Defense Sector, Houston Air Route Traffic Control Center, an air support operations squadron and over 80 search and rescue aircraft.

The Navy’s P-8 Poseidon, although designed for battlefield intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, also provided aerial imagery of the Texas landscape through their capabilities employed in support of civil authorities heading the relief efforts.

AFNORTH also leaned on the Civil Air Patrol, who has supported the Air Force since World War II, to collect still

imagery demanded by rescue units in the field.

Most of the assets under the control of AFNORTH are now packing up equipment and returning to home stations as civil authorities transition to recovery operations.

However, as the demand for Hurricane Harvey support wanes, AFNORTH continues to monitor the path of Hurricane Irma, and is prepared to respond at a moment’s notice.

Fort Monroe Reunion

Fort Monroe will host a reunion Sept 15, 2017, from 6 to 9 p.m. for all those with a connection with Ft. Marriage Enrichment Program

The Fort Eustis Regimental Memorial Chapel is hosting a Joint Base Langley-Eustis community-wide Marriage Enrichment Program. Sessions meet Thursday evenings, from 6 to 8 p.m., Sept 14, 2017 through May 17, 2018, in the RMC Lounge, 923 Lee Boulevard, Ft. Eustis. The Marriage Enrichment sessions are on “Making Your Marriage Your Priority! Love, Honor, and Cherish.” The Marriage Enrichment program is for married and engaged couples, spouses of deployed, Active Duty, Reserve, National Guard and Retirees. The Air Force Reserve will host Palace FrontPalace Chase informational sessions the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month at 10 a.m., in the 633rd Force Support Squadron auditorium, building 15 in Wing B, room 203. Palace Front is available to Airmen within 180 days of their projected separation date.

633rd SFS message to Hunt Housing residents

The 633rd Security Forces Squadron asks all Hunt Housing residents to secure their vehicles and homes.

Crime rates are generally higher during the summer months and have begun to increase in Hunt Housing.

Suspects have been targeting unlocked vehicles. The 633rd SFS has increased patrols in the area, but needs the assistance of all residents to stop the increase in crime. Residents can help by locking their vehicles and storing all valuable items in their vehicles out of view.
