U.S. Air Force Airmen deploy to austere locations across the globe every year in support Air Force, Joint and Coalition missions.

The 633rd Security Forces Squadron’s mission to maintain a worldwide deployable combat force; delivering a professional and integrated defense force anytime and anywhere.

But it’s up to the 633rd SFS combat arms training and maintenance instructors keep the battlefield Airmen at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, mission ready for all possible scenarios, including night operations.

“It is compulsory for battlefield Airmen to fire at night because of the importance of acclimating to the environment while using the equipment,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Murat Elahi, 633rd SFS CATM NCO in charge.

“When you have these two things meshed together, you have an Airman who will be better able to meet the needs of the combatant commander.”

During this training, the Airmen get mechanical training on how to mount, don and troubleshoot equipment such as the night vision goggles and the aiming laser.

The technology today makes things more comfortable and user friendly, but knowing how to wear the gear and be practical in the battlefield cannot be undermined, according to U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Julius Taylor, 633rd SFS CATM instructor. All these aspects are trained to become second nature, almost like breathing.

When the Airmen are down range, the equipment used during night operations won’t feel foreign because they are not using it for the first time, they have practiced and are ready to execute the mission.

“We get letters all the time from our Airmen down range saying ‘thank you for teaching me how to use my weapon properly’ or ‘thank you for teaching me how to use my equipment properly,’” Taylor said.

He believes the only thing that should be on an Airman’s mind is how to accomplish the mission, not how to use their gear.

“Here at combat arms we pride ourselves in giving the best quality of training possible; we are not just out at the gun range all the time, while in the classroom we’re instructors and motivators,” Taylor said. “People need to realize that we are not just doing this to interrupt anybody, it serves a purpose.

We want to send our guys down range with the best equipment and the best training possible to do their mission and be successful.”

U.S. Service members celebrate Oktoberfest Sept. 28, 2018, at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia.

Oktoberfest is a festival that was held to celebrate the marriage of Prince Ludwig and Therese of Saxe-Hildburghhausen in Munich, Germany in 1820 and only horse racing was the source of entertainment. Over 200 years, the festival has been expanded to including beer stalls, merry-go-rounds and other amusements.

Airman welcomes competition like an island breeze

Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.

Born great

“I was actually named after a soccer player called Jairzinho,” said U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Jairzinho Burke, 633rd Air Base Wing Judge Advocate paralegal.

“He scored in every world cup game in 1994, which is the year I was born, and it’s interesting because I play the same position he did (right wing).”

Growing up with the name Jairzinho, Burke felt a responsibility to live up to that name; he had to play soccer and had to be known.

“Growing up in Jamaica is a little bit of everything,” Burke said. “The school system is rough and its fun; everything is just very, very competitive.”

Burke started playing cricket and soccer at the age of five but didn’t really show his zeal for soccer until he reached middle school. Throughout elementary school, children in Jamaica are introduced to sports, but middle school is where the competitive scene kicks in with the all-island leagues.

Some achieve greatness

“When we practiced our goal wasn’t ‘let’s compete’ our goal was ‘we’re taking the trophy home,’” Burke said. “If

you don’t get 1st, 2nd or 3rd place (in Jamaica) you’re not getting anything, there is no such thing as a participation medal or let’s go get ice cream. If you lose, you better work your butt off and try again next year.”

When he played soccer in the 15-and-under category, Burke wasn’t as big as the other players and couldn’t match their skill. However, he was fast and determined to take on others.

Burke started to put in extra hours anyway he could, training his body in the gym and polishing his skills on the field. This lead to the coach telling Burke to start a U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Jairzinho Burke, 633rd Air game during the quarter finals.

Some have greatness thrust upon them “From that day on, I’ve started on every team I’ve been on,” Burke said. “That just made me work harder to keep it up, I can’t be less than what I’ve achieved.”

It was instilled in Burke from a young age, you play to win and learn from failure so you can win next time. A passion and drive for excellence that would lead him to what he now calls home.

With the Airman’s creed and squadron mottos at basic military training such as “Second to none, come get some,” by the 322nd Training squadron and “Wolfpack, lead the way,” by the 331st TRS, Burke gravitated to the Air Force.

“Any team I go to I want them to be better than me because I know that at the end of it I’m going to be accomplished,” Burke said. “Anything I can use to motivate me

As part of the JBLE Soccer Club, Burke has had the opportunity to lead as a captain, help people train to make the team and surround himself by others, who just like him want to be the best.

Called to be a wingman, a leader and a warrior in a culture of integrity, excellence and service before self, Burke pushes forward to be the best.

“The competition drives me, if there is no competition, then honestly I’m not motivated,” Burke said. “I want to keep going further than the Air Force level, I want to go to the All Armed Forces to encounter more competition and the next challenge.”

work toward their best selves.

“Deploying was a good experience, but there were a lot of bad times,” Beaufort said. “I was stressed and couldn’t deal with work so, I would go to the gym to vent and blow off steam. That’s where I found my calm.”

As the gym became a part of the Jamaica native’s daily routine, familiar faces turned into workout buddies and friendly competition became motivation. So, when a friend recommended participating in a bodybuilding competition, Beaufort decided to step out of his comfort zone.

“I was unsure about it at first because I wasn’t confident enough to get up there and show my body,” Beaufort said. “I had so much

7 support from my squadron and I started training for it. Even though I didn’t place (in the competition) like I wanted to, I saw what I was able to accomplish and it opened up a whole new world to me.”

Beaufort describes his newfound passion for bodybuilding as a lifestyle that he actively works on whether he is lifting weights in the gym or not.

While working in JBLE’s fitness assessment cell, conducting fitness tests, Beaufort said he wants to encourage Airmen to look past their annual physical fitness tests and push themselves to take on new challenges.

One such challenge was the Langley Classics Bodybuilding competition held on Sept. 29 at Shellbank Fitness Center. He decided to organize a free bodybuilding competition to give others the same opportunity he was given.

“I hope these competitions give Airmen an extra incentive to work on their physique,” Beaufort said. » See INSPIRE | 11

The town of Windsor Locks is relatively small, totaling 12,500 residents, but is home to an international airport, the 1965 Little League World Series championship and most recently a recipient of the nation’s highest decoration for valor.

The hometown of Master Sgt. John Chapman commemorated the life of the Special Tactics combat controller, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor a few months ago for his valorous efforts during the Battle of Takur Ghar in 2002.

Friends, family, supporters and military members past and present showed up in droves to celebrate the life of Chapman with an MOH monument dedication, a parade and a ceremony.

“John’s legacy will live on and our teammates past and present and those of the future, will strive to live by those same virtues that made John,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Claude Tudor, Jr., commander of the 24th Special Operations Wing, the sole wing dedicated to Special Tactics Airmen. “Those virtues that started here in Windsor Locks … the thread that was woven in this 9.5-mile city on the Connecticut River.”

Chapman graduated from Windsor Locks

High School in 1983, where he excelled as an athlete on the varsity soccer team and dive team. He joined the U.S. Air Force shortly after in 1985, as an information systems operator and later volunteered to join the Special Tactics community.

Special Tactics is U.S. Special Operations Command’s tactical air and ground integration force and the Air Force’s special operations ground force, leading global access, precision strike, personnel recovery and battle eld surgery operations.

In February 2002, Chapman deployed to Afghanistan as part of a joint special operations team. On the team, his role was to conduct

precision strikes by integrating airpower onto the battle eld.

On March 4, 2002, Chapman was killed during Operation ANACONDA, when he knowingly sacri ced his life to fend off a rocket-propelled grenade attack on an incoming MH-47 “Chinook” helicopter carrying a quick reaction force of U.S. Army Rangers and Air Force ST Airmen.

Chapman was initially awarded the Air Force Cross for his actions, but after a thorough review, it was upgraded to the Medal of Honor by President Donald Trump, who presented it to his widow, Valerie Nessel, during a White House ceremony, on Aug. 22.

Chapman is the rst Special Tactics Airman to receive the Medal of Honor and upon receiving the decoration, Chapman was posthumously promoted to the rank of master sergeant.

Thomas Saadi, commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs, dedicated a monument to Chapman’s honor at the town’s memorial hall, before the procession marched down Main Street to the Windsor Locks amphitheater to begin the ceremony to celebrate his life.

“We all must remember the fallen, because they are not just names on a plaque … they were brothers, sisters and friends, who have sacri ced their lives on the mantle of freedom just as Chapman had,” said Saadi during the mantle dedication. “They served, they fought and they paid the ultimate sacri ce in service to this nation.”

ST Operators with the 24th SOW, the unit Chapman was assigned to when he lost his life, conducted a military free fall into the event to kick off the celebration, as the U.S. Air Force Heritage of America Band played the National Anthem followed by four C-130 Hercules with the Air National Guard’s 103rd Airlift Wing buzzing over the crowd.

Governor Dannel Malloy and Representative John Larson spoke during the ceremony, sharing appreciation to the Chapman family and military veterans for their sacri ces.

“I often think of how dif cult it must be to answer the call, especially today in America, less than 1 percent, of the nation serves in our military,” said Larson. “And, to have the exemplary Americans like John Chapman step forward and do what

generations before him have done is a tip of the hat to all those who serve this great nation of ours.”

As the ceremony came to a close, Tudor detailed the events of Chapman’s sacri ce, his reverence for the city of Windsor Locks and offered examples of how the sel ess, never-quit virtues that Chapman exemplied can be found in sacri ces of ST Airmen today.

“The use of strong, descriptive language in William Ernest Henley’s poem, ‘Invictus,’ clearly convey its theme to never lose hope, no matter the circumstance, that you control your fate, and you decide your future,” said Tudor. “John was the master of his fate, he paid the ultimate sacri ce to save his teammates. And that very character of John, was originally forged from this city called Windsor Locks.”

WASHINGTON

President Donald J. Trump presented the Medal of Honor to former Staff Sgt. Ronald Shurer II at a ceremony Monday, for his heroic actions during an operation in Shok Valley, Afghanistan.

Shurer, who serves as a member of the Secret Service Counter Assault Team, and his wife Miranda, were invited to the White House to meet with the president several weeks ago. However, Trump said they had no clue as to why. “(Shurer) walked into the Oval Office, and I told Ron he was going to receive our nation’s highest military honor,” the president said. “It will be a moment I will never forget.”

Born in Fairbanks, Alaska, Shurer spent most of his life growing up in Washington State. With a desire to serve, he tried to enlist but was initially rejected by the military due to a medical condi-

tion, the president said.

“I can’t believe it! That was a bad mistake,” said Trump, garnering a laugh from the audience.

After the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, Shurer enlisted as a medic with the U.S. Army. He quickly completed his Advanced Individual Training, and it didn’t take long for Shurer to join Special Forces.

On his second deployment, April 6, 2008, Shurer put his life on the line to save the lives of four Special Forces Soldiers and 10 Afghan commandos.

“Ron was among the few dozen Special Forces [Soldiers] and 100 Afghan commandos that dropped by helicopter into Shok Valley — a rocky, barren valley, far away from any reinforcements,” Trump said. “Ron was the only medic in the team, and while he was still at the base of the mountain, the first team began to scale the cliffs toward the village.”

As the lead element moved up the mountain, more than 200

well-trained enemies ambushed the American and Afghan forces. A storm of rocket-propelled grenades and machine gun and sniper fire rained down on the joint force. Former Staff Sgt. Ryan Wallen was one of the first to be injured. Shurer ran to him to treat his injuries. “[The team] heard over the radio that American fighters near the top of the mountain were pinned down, and some were critically injured,” Trump said.

“There was blood all over the place. It was a tough, tough situation to be in.”

Shurer joined a small team of Soldiers and commandos and began to move up the mountain, fighting back and dodging gunfire along the way.

When he reached the top, one of Shurer’s close friends — an Afghan interpreter named Edris Khan, who went by C.K. — was already dead. Then-Staff Sgt. Dillon Behr and then-Staff Sgt. Luis Morales were also injured, and

• October 5, 2018 Shurer did all he could to treat their wounds.

“Ron’s presence during that time was calm, cool and collected, and he is the only reason why I am alive today,” Behr said during a media roundtable Sunday.

“At one moment I thought I was going to pass ... Ron slapped me across the face and said, ‘Wake up, you’re not going to die today!’”

According to Behr, the bullet that struck him went through the ball in his hip, barely missing his femoral artery. Behr was the communications sergeant during the operation.

Through all the chaos, there was a brief moment that “Ron realized that this was probably (going to be the) end,” Trump said, adding that Shurer just said a prayer, “asking that his wife and son would be okay with what was going to happen.”

“I realized that this situation was deteriorating and I remember saying a prayer out loud, ‘God, you’ve just got to help us,’” said then-Capt. Kyle Walton during the media event. Walton was the commander during that operation.

“We’d already called in innumerable danger-close air strikes.

Right after I said that prayer, there was a pretty devastating explosion directly on top of our position.”

“I remember, as my ears were popping and the dust cleared …

Ron Shurer had his body over the casualties. Even at the final moment, when we were sure that it was over, Ron was still thinking about Dillon, Luis, and the other guys around.”

Ron continued to care for his comrades. Later on in the fight, then-Staff Sgt. John Walding was shot and received a traumatic amputation to his leg. Shurer “directed another (Soldier) to help stem the bleeding,” Trump said.

Then-Master Sgt. Scott Ford, the team sergeant during the operation, was also injured. Initially, Ford was shot in the chest plate.

Shortly after, another sniper bullet hit Ford — this time penetrating his left arm and bouncing off Shurer’s helmet.

“Ron said it felt like he had been

hit over the head with a baseball bat,” Trump said. “He got up, and in pretty bad shape, bandaged Scott’s arm.”

Egressing from the scene, Shurer and a team of commandos and Special Forces Soldiers used some tubular nylon webbing to help lower the casualties down the side of the mountain.

And all those things came together during that battle,” Walton said during the media event. “We are all here today in large part due to Ron’s efforts. And we’re able to help our nation recognize this guy, as well as the service he continues to provide to our nation.”

U.S. Army Soldiers assigned to the 7th Transportation Brigade and the 597th Transportation Brigade from Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, and Transportation Headquarters at Fort Lee, Virginia, participated in a Fire and Ice Challenge Sept.

28, 2018 at JBLE. The three, eight-person teams were tested on their teamwork ability to finish three challenges with the fastest time.

During the first challenge, competitors correctly donned fire protection equipment including a respirator.

After donning the fire protection equipment, each team was timed on how quickly they could extinguish a fire and rescue a simulated casualty.

The last event of the challenge took place in the damage control simulator which represented a ship’s hull with pipes that had burst and a hole in a side wall.

Normally, officers coordinate and oversee the training the enlisted Soldiers participate in, limiting officer opportunities to participate in or see this training hands-on.

“The hardest part for me was the time constraints--it is pretty unbelievable that people are required to put on all the fire equipment on in two minutes,” Carter said. “Also, just getting used to the environment--you need to have a good take on your bearings because the only way out was to find the fire hose and hopefully follow it in the right direction.”

The Fire and Ice Challenge provided transportation officers and senior leadership the opportunity to experience potentially life-saving training that normally, only boat crew Soldiers who have been identified as part of their ships fire team go through.

“I took a huge lesson in teamwork away from this challenge,” said 1st Lt. Clay Confer, 690th RPOE, 832nd Trans. Btn., 597th Trans. Bde. Distribution Platoon platoon leader. “You can always learn from anyone; it doesn’t matter if it’s a brandnew Soldier straight from Advanced Individual Training or the colonel.”

At the end of the challenge, the 7th Transportation Brigade was named the victors over the Transportation Headquarters team and the 597th Trans. Bde.

Beaufort also learned how to navigate and conquer the unique challenges that come with organizing a large event for the first time. He said he knew he couldn’t do it alone so he turned to a professional for guidance.

Outside of active duty work, Tech. Sgt. Magnum McCrae, 633rd Surgical Operations Squadron, NCO in charge of surgical services administration, is a professional bodybuilder and co-founder of a business that promotes bodybuilding competitions. McCrae said over the years he has learned about the hard work and stress that comes with hosting a bodybuilding competition.

“When he came to me, he didn’t know anything about putting together a bodybuilding show and organizing an event like this is stressful, especially when you still have to worry about your job in the military,” McCrae said.

“But he did what he had to do in a very short time and I think the show was a success. I know it meant a lot to the competitors,

even more so for the first-time competitors with friends and family members cheering for them in the audience.”

Now having a successful bodybuilding show under his belt, Beaufort said he looks forward to organizing more competitions and expanding his reach to all military members in the Hampton Roads area.

“Putting on this competition has been one of the hardest things I’ve ever done,” said Beaufort. “But I felt like this show was a reflection of me and the kind of impact I want to have on people who have the drive for improving themselves and just need a little help getting started.”

Every two and a half hours someone in the United States dies from fire, even though fire deaths have declined by 55% from 1977 to 2017.

In 2017 there were 1,319,500 fire responses from fire departments; 3,400 deaths and 15,000 injuries from fire. This totaled $23 billion in fire losses.

Fire Prevention Week, sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association, was created in 1922 to raise awareness and educate communities on the importance of fire safety. In 1925 President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed Fire Prevention Week a national observance throughout the United States during whichever week Oct. 9 falls on.

Joint Base Langley-Eustis, is no different. Langley Air Force Base and Fort Eustis will observe fire prevention week with the purpose of bringing awareness to the risks fires and provide educational resources to the civilians, service members and their families.

In a fire, mere seconds can mean the difference between a safe escape and a tragedy. The Great Chicago Fire started late on Oct. 8, 1871, and continued burning until the morning of Oct. 10, 1871, killing more than 250 people, destroying more than 17,400 structures and over 2,000 acres of land. Everyone is at risk in fires, making it important for every

The JBLE Fire Emergency Services team is committed to preparing our community on the importance of fire safety.

Knowing and practicing the three essential steps to fire safety can make a difference in property conservation and, ultimately, save lives.

Here are some precautions that can be taken to assist in the Look, Listen, and Learn: Inspect your facility or home for fire hazards on a daily basis.

If you find anything suspicious, call the Fire Department.

Make sure your fire and smoke alarms are properly working and know the sounds.

Check every exit and remove clutter restricting proper exits.

Plan fire drills in facilities to educate all on what to do upon activation of a fire or smoke alarm.

Create a home escape plan and practice the plan with a drill.

Traffic calming serpentine

In accordance with Department of Defense guidance regarding defending installations, Fort Eustis will implement a traffic calming serpentine as a measure to increase the installation’s security posture May 1, 2018, on Washington Blvd outbound lanes. The serpentine will reduce the number of outbound lanes from three to two. This will impact outbound traffic, especially during rush hour. The serpentine will remain in place until completion of the Active Vehicle Barrier project which is expected in the month of August 2018.

Security Forces personnel will no longer man the Durand Entry Control Facility (NASA Gate). Personnel will still have their credentials checked by guards at the main NASA gate, however, their credentials will not be checked again at the Durand Entry Control Facility.

NASA guards will still man their side of the Durand Entry Control Facility and will only allow CAC holders (no dependent ID cards) to enter NASA property. Trespass Notice

The Langley small arms firing range, adjacent area and the bullet impact area to the rear of the range are off-limits to all personnel. The Awards and Decorations Office’s customer service hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Wednesdays 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and closed between 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The Official Passport Office is by appointment only.

Military Tuition Assistance briefing

Prior to the first use of Military Tuition Assistance, Service members are required to attend an initial TA briefing to ensure rules, roles and user responsibilities are clearly understood.

Currently, the briefings are conducted in room 130 at the Education Center the first three Fridays of every month at 9 a.m. Initial TA briefings will be conducted in room 123 at the Education Center each Tuesday at 9 a.m. For more information, contact the Education Center at 764-2962 or 633fss.fsde.eo@us.af.mil.
