IS THE MEDIA BIAS? It’s all about perspective

By Dylan Pahman The Federalist

hen CNBC hosted the third GOP presidential debate, many, such as Chris Cillizza of the Washington Post, declared Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz the big winners of the debate, in no small part due to their combined assault on “liberal bias in “mainstream media. The losers? Among others, Jeb Bush for his lackluster performance, and CNBC for exemplifying the alleged anticonservative media bias with their embarrassingly poor moderation of the debate. Rhetorically, denouncing media bias is a strong tactic for Republicans. As FiveThirtyEight’s Harry Enten explained, “Ted Cruz going after the media is a smart move in a Republican primary. According to a 2015 Newseum Institute First Amendment Center poll, only 19 percent of Republicans believe the media tries to report the news without bias. Democrats, at 36 percent, were far more likely to think that the news media tried to report without bias. So Rubio and Cruz were reflecting a deep conviction of most Republican constituencies, and the audience confirmed this with the biggest applauses of the night. But does this conviction reflect reality? The short answer is yes, but, as I will show, that’s misleading. Moreover, contra Robert Tracinski, such a posture is not “awesome but self-marginalizing, because it fails to see that the actual variety of bias in mainstream media, despite its many flaws, as a reflection of a flourishing, free press.

Look at the data

On the one hand, certainly there are some major news outlets known for left-leaning journalism, such as CNN or The New York Times. There is, of course, truth to the claim that some mainstream media has such a “liberal bias.

remember when...

On the other hand, the data tells a more complicated story. This summer, Rick Kissell reported the Nielsen cable news ratings in Variety showing Fox News at the top with, in some cases, more than double the views of its closest competitor. Fox News, which I daresay wouldn’t be caught dead being accused of “liberal bias.â€? Can the topperforming news network not be considered “mainstreamâ€?? It would be fair to counter that cable news is not the only source on television, and not even the most-watched. Fox has no evening news like ABC, NBC, CBS, and PBS. The fact that, according to a recent study by the American Press Institute, “Democrats are more trusting of news from the three broadcast networks and the newswires, while Republicans are more trusting of news from cableâ€? suggests the slant there tends to favor the Left. However, people divide their news consumption today between mediums. That same study notes, “The 24-hour cable channels ‌ are the source most often cited for four of the topics probed: politics, international news, business and the economy, and social issues.â€? So when it comes to political issues, the most common source, 24-hour cable news, is fairly evenly divided: Fox News generally has a Nielsen rating about equal to CNN’s and MSNBC’s combined. Turning to print, the data tells the same story. Which New York-based newspaper has the highest circulation in the United States? Not The New York Times. As of March 2013 (the most recent figures I could find), the Times was No. 2 with a circulation of 1.8 million (1.1 million digital). The No. 1 paper, by a half million more, was the Wall Street Journal, which is more typically thought of as editorially right-leaning, with 2.3 million (roughly 900,000 digital). Are we to believe that the newspaper with the highest circulation in the country cannot be considered “mainstreamâ€?? At least since the advent of Fox News

and the ascendency of online publications, according to one study, news consumption has become increasingly personalized. We could also add to that the rise of politicallydriven talk radio, which is dominated by conservative shows. Notably, however, the same study reported that social media and online outlets also correlated with increased exposure to material from less-preferred news outlets. Nevertheless, the point still stands: people are consuming, or at least intending to consume, more of only those media channels that cater to their own political and other ideological preferences. If a person reads only Conservative Publication X, it is easy to list the many other publications out there that, by contrast, have a left-wing slant. The perception then becomes that all those other outlets must be the mainstream and one’s own favored publication, radio show, or news channel is some sort of minority, underground, or counter-cultural venue. I would not be surprised if this same perception is mirrored on the Left to some degree, even though it isn’t as big of a talking point for Democratic politicians and pundits.

Varied voices are good for freedom

This trend is especially unfortunate among conservative publications that cast themselves as something other than “mainstream and sometimes even as something other than “the media. Perhaps this is just semantics, but the latter claim is obviously false (any publication is media). The former claim, however, is selfmarginalizing. To presume that all “mainstream media is by definition progressive makes becoming part of the mainstream impossible for conservative outlets. Yet shouldn’t this be precisely the goal? It seems to have been the goal for Fox News, at least, and by the numbers they seem to BIAS, continued on Page 13

hen the NFL free agency period opened back in March, Chargers General Manager Tom Telesco wasted no time signing one of the best cornerbacks out on the market — Casey Hayward. Having lost Patrick Robinson to the Colts via free agency and concerns over depth in the secondary, the versatile Hayward was part of a Packers secondary that finished the season ranked sixth in pass defense. Ranked 14th-overall on the Pro Football Focus’ top 75 free agent list, the 26-yearold Hayward is expected to challenge veteran Brandon Flowers for the starting cornerback spot opposite Jason Verrett. Following the annual Fan Fest activities at Qualcomm Stadium, MP reporter Art Garcia Jr. caught up with Hayward to ask him a few questions following practice. Art Garcia: How does it feel coming to the Chargers? Casey Hayward: It feels good man and today (FanFest) kind of solidifies it here at Qualcomm Stadium with this great atmosphere, and I would like to thank the fans for coming out. Former NFL Quarterback Tim Tebow hasn’t played baseball since he was in high school, but is making a run at becoming a professional baseball player.

Te-ball? Tim Tebow gives up pigskin for pine bat SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — With professional football not working out, Tim Tebow is going to give baseball a try. The 2007 Heisman Trophy winner and former NFL first-round draft pick plans to hold a workout for Major League Baseball teams to scout him. Tebow last played organized baseball in high school. ESPN first reported the news. Agent Brodie Van Wagenen, the cohead of CAA Baseball, said in a statement that the workout is not a publicity stunt. “His work ethic is unprecedented, and his passion for the game is infectious. He knows the challenges that lie ahead of him given his age and experience, but he is determined to achieve his goal of playing in the Major Leagues, Van Wagenen said. Tebow, who turned 29 on Aug. 14, has been training in Scottsdale with former major league catcher Chad Moeller. “I am beyond impressed with Tim’s ath-

leticism and swing, and it goes without saying that he has shown a high level of discipline and strong work ethic, Moeller said in a statement released by CAA. “I see bat speed and power and real baseball talent. I truly believe Tim has the skill set and potential to achieve his goal of playing in the Major Leagues, and based on what I have seen over the past two months, it could happen relatively quickly. Former All-Star slugger Gary Sheffield came to bat for Tebow on Twitter. “I spent time with Tim Tebow in the cages, Sheffield wrote. “He’s a NATURAL. Tim has IT. Tebow won the Heisman and two national championships with the University of Florida and was drafted in the first round by the Denver Broncos in in 2010. ‘LAST SHIP’ STAR SEES TIES IN SHOW TO REAL LIFE By Elise Cooper MilitaryPress

Elisabeth Rohm has been acting since 1997. People might know her for her portrayals of Assistant District Attorney Serena Southerlyn in the TV series “Law & Order, DA Amanda Taylor in “Stalker, Polito in the movie “American Hustle, Peggy in the movie “Joy, and now Allison Shaw in the TNT series “The Last Ship, now in its third season. The show’s plot has the world recovering from a global virus pandemic that nearly destroyed the population. This third season involves two plots, an action adventure that has a U.S. naval destroyer combating the Chinese and pirates, while on the home front the president and his administration are trying to keep a united America as they battle the different regional leaders. Elisabeth plays the highly intelligent and capable White House Chief of Staff to President Michener. Below is an interview with her about her role. Elise Cooper: This season seems to be

‘Hell or High Water’ puts modern twist on the Western Sit down with David Mackenzie and Gil Bermingham By Jeri Jacquin MilitaryPress

his week in theaters comes the film “Hell or High Water and I am on the dusty trail of being excited about it. As you can read from my review of the film, I couldn’t be more pleased with the direction, story and casting of this unique film. Director David Mackenzie has brought a modern Western to the screen filled with themes of outlaws versus lawmen, but the story of the outlaws is much more than being “bad guys. This English director is responsible for films that cause conversations, such as “Young Adam in 2003, “Perfect Sense in 2011 and 2013’s “Starred Up. Gil Birmingham’s resume is long and filled with characters ranging from Native American characters to law enforcement. News Briefs Group wants VA to show works by veteran artists A taxpayer watchdog group is calling on the Department of Veterans Affairs to showcase work by artists who have served in the military, after it was revealed the VA spent some $20 million on lavish art at facilities around the country. The group, Open the Books, released an oversight report on spending at the VA — showing the administration purchased millions in luxury art at the height of the health care scandal during which thousands of veterans died waiting to see doctors. The $19.7 million tab included a $700,000 sculpture to adorn a California facility for blind veterans. The VA also spent $21,000 for a 27-foot fake Christmas tree; $32,000 for 62 “local image pictures for the San Francisco VA; and $115,600 for “art consultants for the Palo Alto facility. The watchdog group, as well as several U.S. lawmakers, are now calling on the VA to feature the work of those it serves. “No one tells the veterans’ story better than a veteran, said Adam Andrzejewski, founder and CEO at OpenTheBooks.com. “For example, veterans have their own art museum. Why is the VA spending millions on lavish art when veterans are already producing great art? he said.

‘HELL OR HIGH WATER’ Continued from Page 5

David Mackenzie: <laughing> That really was an education for me. I didn’t know about that until someone brought it to my attention. It’s lovely to play those details. JJ: When you first read the script what was your reaction? DM: I thought it was almost a perfect script actually. I loved the journey it went on beginning so hard and tough and delving deeper into the character and even being humorous. The script does get into deeper things and just changes into so many different levels. For me as a film director, there were enormous opportunities to be cinematic and to explore bigger American themes, but in a not heavy-handed way. These are great characters and it offered amazing opportunities to cast the story with such talent like the man sitting next to me here. It was a love affair for me really. I had been to West

10 "VH

Texas and wanted to do something with a western theme and in that landscape. So when the script came, I knew I could do just that — which is very exciting for me as a foreigner. Gil Birmingham: That’s the amazing part, that you captured it all. Several people at the screening last night were from the south and they wanted to know how he captured that. DM: I had a great team and material and a strong desire to represent this world as well as I could with an open heart and an open mind. JJ: Gil, What was your thought on playing Alberto Parker? GB: I thought it was brilliant layering and touching on so many different aspects of what the culture is currently, economically, socially and politically. There are issues of race, issues of guns but not any heavy handedness in the approach to each one. It is also in a humorous way many times. People will be able to be open to re-

ceive these thoughts and how we conduct ourselves with fellow human beings. JJ: I also have to say, I don’t think I can recall a film where Native Americans are the subject of such direct joking. I find it happens easily within a family but here it is between Parker and Hamilton so openly. What is your feeling about that? GB: That is a great question and I think when I first read it, it was the thing that stood out for me as well. It happens in families, as you say, and that brings the question of the relationship between Marcus and Alberto. What is their relationship and how does Alberto receive things? Sometimes he jabs back at him, but what became clear is that they were brothers and Jeff ’s character is my brother who knows the hot spots and triggers just like a family member would. They learn to deal with one another and that was the capability of the character, by ribbing his “brother he is showing his affection. DM: It was important to me that we looked at those issues as well. We didn’t shy away from anything. When you first hear some of that ribbing, it is a bit tough. As a result of that it helps with the arc of their relationship and you realize that this thing that feels shocking is part of their relationship. I think it gives it a special dimension. JJ: An example for you is during the screening, there was a woman next to me that when the ribbing started she pushed back into her chair with her jaw slightly open yet I’m sitting there laughing. That’s when I realized that Hamilton and Parker’s relationship ran very deep. DM: We were all a bit nervous about it so it’s good to hear that it has come across that way. There is a concern about being sensitive and it could have gone either way. GB: The other part of it was the Native culture of respect, understanding and compassion are all the core elements that I know had to be there. Jeff ’s character had suffered the loss of his wife two years prior and now being forced to retire from a job that is his identity. Alberto wanted to still have this last hurrah with him, being the one to be with him so these jabs get filtered. DM: I love the resilience on his face and the “here we go again and the unspoken that shows clearly. Gil brings all of that though the looks he has. I think it is a

lovely dimension. JJ: Last night you also talked about the dimension of the characters. We are dealing with two sets of brothers and whether you see it as good or bad, as a director these four characters never really meet until the very end. How was that for you working with two and two? DM: What was really very interesting was the schedule, and I had to shoot Chris and Ben first which was right before “Star Trek, so I had very little time. There is a very real energy, and we shot almost sequentially. We connected with the odd couple of this brotherly relationship. It was all about the brothers — it was a strong element because we did it so quickly. That finished siding with the outlaws and then Jeff and Gil come in and we side with the lawmen! I was really very happy that the schedule forced that on us so we could focus on each side individually rather than juggling the two. The two brotherly dynamics are very different, but have echoes of each other with the tough love and antagonism but the deep affection beneath it. JJ: What would you each like the audience to take away from this film? DM: I think the film is a film that should be enjoyed first and foremost with elements of a bank robber-Western genre elements. It is about American now and hopefully it asks questions about what is happening now and I hope those questions will resonate. I also want to say that to anyone who doesn’t know it, there is a lot of humor as well and although it is dealing with a serious subject there is also a lot of moments that really help you get through as it were. GB: I hope everyone has a great time and is entertained. I love the fact that it is set in a way that there is some ambiguity about it. That people don’t really know who the bad guys are and who the good guys are. It is so perfectly written out and Hollywood at its best will provide a platform for people to have creative discussions about things like the subject matters in our film. There is the question of guns and economics and so forth, all things that need to be discussed. If we can present them in a way that people feel entertained yet thought provoking at the same time we are pleased.

may as well take a Zippo with me to the voting booth Nov. 8. Like an unattractive feminist and her bra or a privileged yuppie and his draft card, I’ll be setting my ballot on fire. At least, that’s what some friends and family are telling me. For many, a ballot not cast for the candidate of a major party is a wasted vote. “You may as well elect (insert opposing candidate’s name here), they say. But I cannot vote for Hillary Clinton. And I will not vote for Donald Trump. In elections past, it wasn’t hard to vote for a less-than-ideal candidate. Despite my differences, they were still competent and a much better choice. In 2008, I had no problem holding my nose and voting for the grumpy old guy against Barack Obama. Same was true in 2012. This year, though, the choices are nauseating. It’s not a matter of holding one’s nose — it’s choking back vomit. Voting for the lesser of two evils in 2016 is still choos-

ing evil. Party loyalists who only care about winning scoff. They enthusiastically embrace their bilious blowhard or dark pit of greed without giving a thought to the havoc they’ll wreak on their party and the country. Winning means nothing if we all lose in the end.

Saying we have to choose between Clinton and Trump is like saying our only choices are Coors Light and Budweiser, when there’s much better alternatives. (Sorry, Anheuser-Busch, no matter how much you slap “America on your cans, it’s still swill. Same goes for candidates). If you’re enthusiastic about a president

that mocks the disabled, ridicules true war heroes and attacks parents of fallen soldiers, by all means, vote for Trump. If a president that enables misogyny, lies to the families of dead heroes and puts national security at risk to hide her pay-to-play scheme gets you excited, vote for Clinton. That’s just scratching the surface — when you delve into “real issues the choice becomes even more abhorrent. Republicans are delusional if they think Trump is a conservative. His positions on abortion, gun rights, taxes and universal health care change with the wind. On foreign policy, he was for the Iraq war before he was against it (paging John Kerry), wants to abandon the most successful military alliance in history and openly wonders why the U.S. can’t use its nuclear arsenal. As a child of the ’80s, Trump’s nomination is reminiscent of what Ronald Reagan said about his 1962 switch from Democrat to Republican. “I didn’t leave the Democratic Party. The party left me. Trump’s draw is understandable. American’s are frustrated and want an “outEVIL, continued on Page 16

I knew how close they were because we had to come back and beat them at the end of the game. They had good players last year and tore it up in Green Bay before we were able to come back and beat them. But I knew they had good players and it all starts with the quarterback, and when you have a guy like Phil (Rivers) you have a chance to be a really good team. The point is simple: An underdog mentality may have popular appeal among one’s base, but it is unbecoming and possibly even disingenuous to imply that all mainstream media is turned against conservatives. The mainstream is demonstrably broad enough to include many biases, and I doubt such a posture will be a winning strategy beyond primary season. Certainly, as I’ve said, that mainstream does include left-wing bias. Indeed, while Cruz may have been exaggerating, I did think the CNN Democratic debate was much more fairly and sympathetically moderated. However, it is worth pointing out that even there Anderson Cooper’s opening question to Hillary Clinton was literally, “Will you say anything to get elected? That’s not exactly equivalent to “Which of you is more handsome and why? John Adams, Samuel Adams, and James Bowdoin wrote in the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (Art.

XVI), “The liberty of the press is essential to the security of freedom in a state. Using Kuyper’s logic, since the press is not the proper domain of the state, a free press reflects a society where the state does not hinder freedom of expression. The variety of biases that can be found even in the mainstream media serves as evidence of this freedom in the United States today. Instead of decrying those biases in the mainstream that we don’t like as if they were they only ones, those of us whose first political concern is freedom ought to be glad that a variety of viewpoints are in fact reflected there, as annoying as it may be when the viewpoint of any particular outlet contradicts one’s own. Jane and Arlene are outside their nursing home, having a drink and a smoke, when it starts to rain. Jane pulls out a condom, cuts off the end, puts it over her cigarette, and continues smoking. Arlene: What in the hell is that? Jane: A condom. This way my cigarette doesn’t get wet. Arlene: Where did you get it? Jane: You can get them at any pharmacy. The next day, Arlene hobbles herself into the local pharmacy and announces to the pharmacist that she wants a box of condoms. The pharmacist, obviously embarrassed, looks at her kind of strangely (she is, after all, over 80 years of age), but very delicately asks what size, texture, brand of condom she prefers. “Doesn’t matter, Sonny, as long as it fits on a Camel. The pharmacist fainted. with the New York Jets. He went to training camp with the New England Patriots in 2013 and the Philadelphia Eagles in 2015 but was cut before the season each time. Tebow last played competitive baseball more than a decade ago, hitting .494 as a junior for Nease High School in Florida. He didn’t play baseball as a senior, concen-

trating instead on football. “He was a six-tool player, Tebow’s high school coach Greg “Boo Mullins said in a 2013 interview with The Sporting News. “He has arm strength, he could run, he could hit, he could hit for power, he could field, but his character made him that six-tool guy. John Fox, the Chicago Bears coach who coached at Denver when Tebow played there, said “good for him when told of his decision to try baseball.

“He was very competitive, Fox said, “a super, super young person, very dedicated to life, a guy that I was very impressed with that took us to the playoffs and won a playoff game. ESPN reported that Tebow will work out for major league teams later this month. Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona managed Michael Jordan when the basketball star did a stint in the minors with the Birmingham Barons in Double-A in 1994. “It’s a little harder jump, though, than I think people realize, Francona said. “Even the lower A-ball, the lower rungs of professional baseball, are still pretty good baseball. New York Jets receiver Eric Decker, who was Tebow’s teammate in Denver and who played baseball at the University of Minnesota, said he doesn’t know if Tebow will be good enough, but he is confident people will pay to find out. “I don’t know what the chances are (of Tebow being successful), but if I was a Double-A or a Single-A team, I’m signing him to get the ticket sales up. I’m sure he’ll have success in that field, Decker said. Tebow already has drawn the attention of minor league teams that always are on the lookout for a successful promotion. The Schaumburg, Ill., Boomers of the Independent Frontier League issued a news release saying they have offered Tebow a contract . “We’re looking for an athletic outfielder who can bring some leadership and competitiveness into the clubhouse, Boomers manager Jamie Bennett said. “Tebow brings all of those characteristics and then some. I think he’d be a great fit here in Schaumburg. The Fort Myers Miracle, a Class A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, quickly planned a “What Would Tim Tebow Do? night on Thursday. As for the majors, New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson was asked if the team had any interest in Tebow. “Are you insinuating we need a Hail Mary at this point? he said.

sider to break up the system. But the presidency is not meant for on-the-job training — that’s basically what we’ve had since 2009. Clinton’s only saving grace is that she isn’t Trump, which isn’t saying much. She’s airing a poignant ad featuring Trump’s quotes that reminds us that “our children are watching, but let’s not forget the uncomfortable conversations parents had to have the last time a Clinton was in the Oval Office. She has been perpetually on the take — from Wall Street, from Walmart, from foreign governments, from anyone with cash. The woman “breaking the glass ceiling doesn’t mind being funded by those who treat women as secondclass citizens and executes their citizens for being gay. During her most recent stint in government, we’re left with a failed reset with Russia, four dead Americans in Benghazi and an e-mail scandal that gets more salacious each day. On the foreign policy front, expect more interventionist nation-toppling with no exit strategy. She bragged about being the architect of our Libyan incursion — a move President Obama called his greatest mistake. Watching her explain her actions (or lack there-of ), one can only conclude that Clinton, like her husband, is a sociopathic liar. It would be a waste to vote for either one of these yahoos — and I won’t do it. I value the right to choose my leaders too much. I doubt the soldiers who died to preserve that right ever imagined these two would be our options. Thankfully, there’s other choices. For me — a small government conservative who values personal freedom — it’s going to be former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson on the Libertarian ticket. Think I’m crazy? He leads amongst military and young voters in the polls, and for good reason. While Clinton and Trump sling barbs at one another, Johnson stands as the adult in the room. He’s run a business (something Clinton’s never done) and a government (something Trump’s never done) successfully. He has a record of leading a Democratic-leaning state as a Republican, cutting taxes and regulation while seeing the state’s coffers grow. Plus, he doesn’t have the repugnant baggage that comes with Clinton or Trump. If there ever was a year for a thirdparty candidate to make inroads, this is it. If enough of us throw our votes away, maybe next time the “major parties won’t offer up refuse. At least I won’t have to take a vomit bag to the ballot box.
