is the season for beer. And if you’re still pounding the Silver Bullet, it’s time you packed your things and went back from whence you came. With 120-plus breweries, the San Diego area is the beer Mecca, dominating the craft beer scene and giving us a plethora of amazing choices. It’s a good time to live in Southern California. To beat the heat, here’s some worth drinking. They’re local, delicious and readily available (If Russian River has a great session ale, who cares? We can’t get our hands on it.).

‘BLOOD STRIPE’ GETS IT RIGHT FOR MILITARY WOMEN
Kate Nowlin gives gritty depiction
After U.S. participation in the 20th century’s “Great Wars turned to participation in some not-so-great, still-debated wars, Hollywood tended to take a few years before offering critical fictive input on those conflicts. But American deployment in Iraq and Afghanistan continues to drag on, whatever happy-face scenarios are offered to the media. While we await the big W.-era propaganda critique of Ang Lee’s literary adaptation “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk this fall, “Blood Stripe delivers a smaller-scale weighing of the “War on Terror’s toll on average grunts. Veteran actor Remy Auberjonois’ polished feature debut provides an impressive showcase for co-scenarist Kate Nowlin as a career Marine derailed by PTSD upon return to civilian life. This ambitious drama won the Los Angeles Film Festival prize for homegrown narrative fiction feature, though its somewhat awkward vacillation between serious character study and under-realized thriller elements will limit commercial exposure. A thirty-something Marine Corps sergeant never actually named here, but half-jokingly, half-respectfully referred to as “Our Sergeant (Nowlin), arrives back from her latest — and perhaps, it seems, last — deployment to a minimal welcome. She’s picked up late at from the airport by an in-law. At home, burly husband Rusty (Chris Sullivan) does not make a display of conspicuous enthusiasm. They seem to have a somewhat prickly, not particularly affectionate relationship, suggestive of pre-existing tensions that go unspecified. Whatever preceded, however, “Sarge is clearly barely holding it together in this particular return to civilian life: Pounding beers without effect, compulsively jogging, mowing the lawn at midnight and

other borderline-manic actions that seem to be keeping some kind of breakdown thinly at bay. At a welcome-home party, a guest’s playful hug triggers drastic overreaction from her. After that, there’s no further denying she needs help. But she’s sadly aware that appropriate services at a VA Hospital wouldn’t be available for months, sighing, “There’s a wait. One day at the tedious municipal roadwork job she’s gotten, something in Our Sergeant snaps. She gets in her car and drives hours to the site of a childhood summer camp. It’s the beginning of the off-season, with seemingly sole remaining employee Dot (Rusty Schwimmer) packing things up for the winter. Having no plan, and not having told anyone where
she is, Sarge gets a room-and-board gig that’s just what her anxious mind and coiled Marine body needs: Endless, heavylifting grunt work. The two women’s quiet camaraderie, the tranquil setting, and the hard physical labor do seem to make Sarge better, relaxing such that she answers admiring Dot’s questions about her several Iraq and Afghanistan deployments, in terse but revealing terms. But she’s still in a highly fragile state, agitated further by a mixed bag of interlopers to the camp. They include a visiting group of church elders led by gregarious Art (the writer-helmer’s father RenÊ Auberjonois, still a theatrically flamboyant presence in his mid-70s); his adoptiveson-of-sorts (Tom Lipinski as another
nameless figure, dubbed only “The Fisherman), a fellow moody loner; and some local louts whose lewd menace Sarge’s addled mindset may or may not be exaggerating. It’s when these additional characters arrive at midpoint that real-life spouses Nowlin and Auberjonois’ script begins to stumble, after a strong buildup. While the director has cited such deliberately dislocating films about various forms of mental illness and PTSD as “Repulsion and “Martha Marcy May Marlene as models here, “Blood Stripe grows more tonally muddled than those singular portraits of escalating trauma. The warm-and-fuzzy church group, Lipinski’s conventional ‘BLOOD STRIPE’, continued on Page 12

In a presidential race filled with sharp contrasts, both party’s tickets have at least one thing in common: Both Democratic vice presidential pick Tim Kaine and Republican running mate Mike Pence have sons who are junior Marine officers. Pence’s son Michael, 23, is a newly minted second lieutenant currently in entry-level flight school, assigned to Training Command, Marine Aviation Training Support Group-21, out of Pensacola, Fla., Training Command spokesman Capt. Joshua Pena said. Kaine’s son Nathaniel, 26, is an infantry officer and foreign security force adviser assigned to 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, out of Camp Lejeune, II Marine Expeditionary Force spokeswoman Capt. Kendra Motz said. In July 2015, 1st Lt. Kaine returned from a deployment in support of Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force Crisis Response Africa, where, among other things, he helped to train Tanzanian troops in counter-trafficking operations. Kaine distinguished himself from his early days in the Marine Corps, selected as one of five honor graduates in his class at The Basic School in 2013. In some ways, having a vice president with military children will be a continuum from the past eight years. Current Vice President Joe Biden’s son was a major and JAG officer in the Army National Guard who deployed to Iraq in 2008. Biden’s son Hunter briefly served in the Navy Reserve before being discharged over a positive drug test. But it does mean the presidential ticket, regardless of the the outcome of November’s election, will have a closer connection to the military than most Americans do. A 2011 Pew Research Center poll found a widening gap between the American public and the service members who protect them. Only a third of 18- to 29-year-olds had an immediate family member who had served in the military, the poll found, and only about half of 30- to 49-year-olds did. The study also found that having an immediate family member in the military dramatically influenced views on the military and the country, making them, among other things, more familiar with the challenges that troops face. Is it possible that having a son in the Marine Corps, the branch frequently sent first into a new conflict, could make a future administration more circumspect about deploying troops and more in tune with the needs of the fighting forces? There are a lot of factors in play, Michael Noonan, director of the Program VP, continued on Page 6

estled on the border of Escondido and San Marcos, California sits a residential mobile home park, Madrid Manor, where two hidden treasures thrive. Two surviving World War II veterans are alive, living independent lives, and still giving back to their community. Harry Anderson, 100, and Bruce Radder, 90, rebuilt lives, married wives, and entertained their own troops. It is refreshing for this reporter to review their legacies with them. Anderson recently discovered what he believed to be original photos of Eisenhower and MacArthur, in his bedroom closet, while preparing for his 100th birthday party last year. Radder suggested that he has been entertaining the troops at his mobile home park for more than 30 years, performing his version of “The Follies. These shows are new each year and each year, these shows are well received. Given their gift of longevity, these World War II survivors have given back to their communities over and over again. After celebrating his 100th birthday last December (see the Sept. 15, 2015 issue of MilitaryPress), Anderson decided to clean

out his closet, literally and figuratively. He had so many war souvenirs to be considered for donation. But, when this man, who had landed in Japan two days after the Universal Surrender in 1945, at age 30, discovered old photographs, a whole new chapter of his life started. Though no official agency was willing to step in and authenticate the negatives,
once these were developed, Anderson insisted that he had captured the two famous generals, General Douglas MacArthur and General Dwight Eisenhower, not on the battlefields, but walking together, side by side, leaving a meeting, descending down a staircase. TREASURE, continued on Page 7

Navy will put armed sailors at recruiting centers The U.S. Navy is taking steps to put armed sailors at recruiting centers in the wake of the July 16, 2015, attack in Chattanooga, a Navy spokesman confirmed. “The arming of personnel at these facilities provides both a deterrent value and a defensive capability against potential attacks, Capt. Ray Benedict said. A year ago, a 24-year-old gunman pulled up to a recruiting center on Lee Highway and opened fire from a convertible. One Marine recruiter was wounded, but no one was killed. Then, the shooter drove across town to the U.S. Naval and Marine Reserve Center on Amnicola Highway, where he shot and killed four Marines, and mortally wounded a U.S. Navy sailor. The Navy’s move to station armed sailors is one of several changes to security and policy that have been made after the attack. The Navy allocated $80 million this year to make physical changes to recruiting centers, according to Benedict’s statement. The money will be used to “install access controls, visual identification systems and perform physical changes to some buildings. There are 1,366 Navy recruiting centers across the nation, and personnel in 70 of those centers have been “temporarily relo-

The Navy has also put in place a system to allow recruiters to use their cell phones to quickly alert all other nearby recruiters of an attack, according to the statement. All Navy personnel will also be required to go through active shooter training within 90 days of reporting for duty, followed by annual refresher courses. Armed men and women already guard the Navy’s 71 reserve centers nationwide, like the one on Amnicola Highway in Chattanooga, according to a statement from the Navy.
The attack in Chattanooga has also prompted changes from the Department of Defense. In May, Department of Defense Secretary Ash Carter said the Pentagon was developing a way to more quickly warn military installations of a nearby attack, and said that the department would spend an extra $100 million on protecting military personnel. And just this month, a spokesperson with the Department of Defense said the DoD had “revised its arming policy to further specify commanders’ authority to include use of privately owned and government weapons both on and off installations.

on National Security at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, said. “At a time that less than one percent of the populace serves, it shows a strong commitment to service on the part of the sons,â€? he said. But it’s also unclear, he said, what the future leadership dynamic will be between the elected president and vice president. Right now, he said, it’s too early to say what the impact might be. “It’s a net positive ‌ but I don’t know if it’s a decisive thing or not,â€? Noonan said. “It shows well for both their families and, I think, to the American people.â€? Veteran Marine Sgt. Dakota Meyer, who received the Medal of Honor for heroism in Afghanistan in 2009, told Military.com he had difficulty feeling optimism about either presidential ticket, regardless of the Marine Corps connection. “At least we know their children, the next generation, is on the right path,â€? he said. But Meyer said he did believe it was vital for a future administration to have direct personal experience with military service. “I think our country will never turn around,â€? he said, “until the leader has been there and had some skin in the game.â€?

Who or what or where should Anderson turn to with his find? He turned to this reporter for assistance. That’s when other pieces of Anderson’s background surfaced. This reporter determined that direct gifts to the local community were just as important as war souvenirs. While the pursuit to determine the validity of the photographs still remains an open topic, what I wanted to learn more about was about Harry’s Girls. When he was age 84, an age where many of our friends silently slip into our memories, Harry Anderson had already adopted a high school in San Marcos that assisted unwed mothers to obtain a formal education. Anderson bought diapers, food, and toys to a population most likely forgotten or condemned, and he purchased these supplies out of his own meager retirement funds. Meanwhile, many residents of Anderson’s mobile home park keep up a knitting circle, which has donated bonnets, booties, and bottle covers for these babies. Heathcliff-like romantic figure, the poorly integrated thriller elements (a more congruent film would’ve made those local yokels a constant phantom menace) and a vague, unconvincing climactic catharsis all weaken what had initially seems a tougher-minded film. Then there’s the contrivance necessary to keep Sarge from being “rescued by Rusty, even after she’s made a couple panicked calls back home. On the plus side, “Blood Stripe is cryptic in interesting ways, most notably in that we never actually find out what “happened to Sarge: The film forgoes convention in omitting a flashback, or even a monologue, wherein a specific traumatic combat incident “explains all. (At one point, however, we do glimpse dramatic scars on her back, and her automatic12 "VH
recoil reaction to most physical contact raises the possibility of assault or torture.) That’s a refreshing change from formula, not least because it leaves open the possibility that her PTSD springs from cumulative experience rather than the typical fictive Big Event — a more realistic approach. Nowlin fully invests in her role, credibly creating a born career-military type nonetheless pushed over the brink — a fully-combat-participatory female soldier relatively new to both U.S. policy and to movies, if you discount the likes of the ludicrous “G.I. Jane. Schwimmer, Sullivan and Lipinsky are solid in support, even if the latter’s role feels less organic. While its storytelling wavers, there’s nothing unsteady about the movie’s overall packaging craftsmanship, most notably Radium Cheung’s widescreen photography of the gorgeous northern-Minnesota lake country.

Contempt of court
Having had to take the day off work to appear in court for a minor traffic summons, a man was growing increasingly restless as he waited hour after hour for his case to be heard. Finally, late in the afternoon, his case was called. He stood before the judge, only to hear that court would be adjourned until the next day and he would have to return. “What!? What for?! he yelled at the judge. His honor, equally irritated by a tedious day and the sharp query, roared, “That will be $20 for contempt of court! A doctor of psychology was doing his normal morning rounds, and he entered a patient’s room to find his patient sitting on the floor, sawing at a piece of wood with the side of his hand. Meanwhile, another patient was in the room, hanging from the ceiling by his feet. The doctor asked his patient what he was doing, sitting on the floor. The patient replied in an irritated fashion, “Can’t you see I’m sawing this piece of wood in half? The doctor asks, “If he’s your friend, don’t you think you should get him down from there before he hurts himself? “What? Alesmith San Diego Pale Ale .394 Mike Hess My Other Vice 4.6% ABV Sour beers have become increasingly popular, and it’s exciting to see our local brewers growing beyond the hop-storm IPAs that define San Diego. Hess’ My Other Vice Berliner Weisse is a great place to start. Refreshing and tart, for sure, but not a sour bomb. It offers tastes of green apples, pomegranate and mild fruit.
Modern Times Fruitlands
St. Archer Blackberry Gose
4% ABV
If you’re a fan of the gose resurgence, give this one a try too. Very refreshing, the blackberry is subtle but noticeable and compliments the sour and salty very well.
This gose starts with a sour, salty base giving way to a heavy dose of fruit (which rotates depending on the season).
6% ABV 26 IBUs Pale Ale .394 is soft enough to enjoy through an entire baseball game, yet offers the piney, citrusy hop aromas and flavors we expect from San Diego beers. The malts and hops work perfectly together. .394 references the highest single-season batting average Tony Gwynn set back in 1994 as a Padre, and part of the proceeds go to the Tony and Alicia Gwynn Foundation.
Arrogant Brewing (Stone) Wussie Pilsner 5.8% ABV
Modern Times Oneida 5.2% ABV 50 IBUs
47 IBUs
This Northern Germanstyle pilsner surprised me. Amazingly drinkable and soft — not what I expected from the makers of Arrogant Bastard.
This season pale ale starts with a pungent aroma of hops, lemongrass and tropical fruit. It then gives way to the malts, which provide a smooth finish.
4% ABV
HOPPY St. Archer Imperial IPA 9% ABV A combination of El Dorado, Simcoe and Citra hops give this IPA notes of lemon, citrus and passion fruit, giving way to a delicious, bitter dankness. The finish is dry and smooth, suggesting a malt backbone. Definitely worth trying with lighter meats, as this imperial IPA doesn’t leave your palate completely wrecked.
Stone Ruinten Triple IPA Mother Earth Boo Koo 10.8% ABV 110 IBUs IPA Every summer Stone blesses us with Ruinten. There’s a lot going on here — from tropical fruit to coffee and brown sugar. Plus, it drinks much smoother than you’d expect from such a high ABV. (Also, try the So-Cal only Ruinten with orange peel and vanilla.)
16 "VH
6.5% ABV 52.3 IBUs Sessionable but hop forward enough to satisfy a San Diego palate. Lots of fruit and pine in the taste and aroma, yet finishes dry.
