MILITARY UPDATE By Tom Philpott I MP

Advisory panels say military benefits unsustainable A consensus is building among current and former military leaders and defense industry executives that rising military personnel costs threaten the viability of the all-volunteer force. In July, two separate advisory groups reached the same general conclusions regarding what needs to be done to sustain the force. In the nearer term, they say, one step that must be taken is to make military retirees pay more out of pocket for their health care benefit. “Unless retirees contribute more for their TRICARE insurance, medical costs will not be brought under control and the national defense they served, and for which they fought and sacrificed, will be harmed,” says the final report of the Quadrennial Defense Review Independent Panel. The panel is co-chaired by former Defense Secretary William J. Perry from the Clinton administration and Stephen J. Hadley who was national security

advisor through President George W. Bush’s second term. Longer term, and for the future force, panelists say, work must begin on designing new retirement, compensation and promotion systems to replace inefficient and rigid systems adopted after World War II. The situation is so critical that the HadleyPerry panel asks Congress to establish a new National Commission on Military Personnel to lead the reform effort. Arnold Punaro, a defense industry executive and retired Marine Corps Reserve major general, chairs a task force for the Defense Business Board that will deliver its final report to Defense Secretary Robert Gates in October. Task force “initial observations” for cutting defense costs through best business practices, briefed to the board July 22, reinforces the notion that personnel accounts must be brought under control by modernizing retirement, pay, health benefits and the “up-or-out” promotion systems. Both studies deal with a far wider range of initiatives to restructure forces

and streamline organizations. The Hadley-Perry report can be read online at www.usip.org/files/qdr/qdrreport. pdf and task force observations are at http://dbb.defense.gov/meetings.html What both conclude on the need to control health costs and modernize compensation systems, Punaro said, is consistent with findings of the 10th Quadrennial Review of Military Compensation and the 2006 Defense Advisory Commission on Military Compensation. But now, with Defense Secretary Gates’ leadership and a new awareness among military leaders to the burden of mounting personnel costs, there’s a fresh groundswell for change, he said.

with Congress passing TRICARE for Life, a more robust pharmacy benefit, concurrent receipt for disabled retirees, extra-size active duty pay raises, an improved survivor benefit plan, sharp growth in housing allowances, a bigger death gratuity and more. Punaro declined to criticize any specific initiative. But, he said, “nobody ever sat down and said, ‘What’s the cumulative effect of all this?’ ” The effect, says the Hadley-Perry report, is personnel costs “have grown drastically on a per capita basis.” As the economy recovers and the job market rebounds, Punaro said, the cost of sustaining the military will accelerate even more.

“I’ve heard a four-star military leader comment that DoD is turning into a benefits company that will occasionally kill a terrorist,” Punaro said in a phone interview Tuesday. The remark plays off a popular critique of General Motors before its recent bail out, that union contracts had transformed it into a health care company that occasionally built a car. Both the business board task force and the Hadley-Perry panel agree that the current force must be protected from the changes to retirement, pay or promotion policies needed to create a more efficient future force. “Updating military compensation and redesigning some benefits does not necessitate cuts in pay or benefits for current service members,” said the Hadley-Perry report. “These are areas where any adjustment you make will take decades to change,” Punaro said. “With something like military retirement, you are not going to break faith with people who joined expecting a certain benefit, even though only 20 percent stay long enough to earn a retirement.” But rapid expansion of military entitlements has become part of “the nation’s mandatory spending problems,” the task force found. Among “significant unsustainable trends” that the task force listed is paying military retirees and their families “for 60 years after they have served only 20.” Another task force slide give details of how military entitlements have expanded “rapidly” over the last decade

Punaro, who served as staff director of the Senate Armed Services Committee for eight years, noted that much of the recent entitlement growth has helped only retirees and their families, a population that now outnumbers the active duty community. “TRICARE for Life, the largest new benefit ever passed, was not subject to any kind of serious review or debate, as best as I can tell. Is that the way to pass something like that? And, okay, just because you passed it, does it have to be in existence for 100 years? Bob Gates makes a pretty compelling argument that ‘health care costs are eating us alive’.” Punaro criticized military associations that, he said, push continually for benefits with little heed to more pressing defense priorities. Military leaders and lawmakers this decade have been complicit, he suggested. “It doesn’t’ take a profile in courage to stand up and be for every benefit that anybody has ever dreamed up. That’s easy. It takes a lot of courage to be responsible….It looks to some of us that we’ve changed the slogan ‘Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition’ to ‘Praise the Lord and pass the benefit.’ I remember working with military associations when their number one goal was a strong national defense, not more benefits.”

TUESDAYS WITH MITCH I MP

The bad boy of pseudojournalism exposes himself By Mitch Albom

If a house is burned to the ground, you can whine about the firemen or criticize the building material -- but first you blame the guy who started the fire, right? Last week, a government worker named Shirley Sherrod was axed after a video clip of her speaking to the NAACP was used to paint her as racist. In the blink of an eye, her reputation was burned down. But once the whole speech was revealed -- proving the clip was way out of context -- her bosses were booed, the NAACP was blasted, even President Obama was chided. And the guy who started the fire? As of today, he still has matches. Andrew Breitbart is the conservative blogger who posted the edited video of Sherrod. He put it on one of his five websites. Breitbart, a former Matt Drudge groupie, one-time E! Entertainment employee, and a guy who called Ted Kennedy, hours after his death, “a special pile of human excrement,” hoisted that clip as evidence of reverse racism by the NAACP. He claimed the audience applauded such sentiments. The video showed no such thing. But Breitbart lit the fire. He blew on the flames. Breitbart is where this sad story begins, where the blame lies and where the punishment should be doled out -- if there were any you could dole out. Sadly, how do you punish a blogger like Breitbart? He simply slithers back into the muck that some confuse with journalism. Who does he have to answer to? Nobody. Not the whole truth “I am,” Breitbart boasted to the media last week, “public enemy No. 1 or 2 to the Democratic Party ... based upon the successes my journalism has had.” There are several things wrong with that statement. First, I doubt he counts that much. Second, his journalism? It’s not journalism if you only look for one point

of view, post other people’s stuff and don’t even acknowledge how using chopped-up material to paint a full picture is wrong. “Let me think about that,” was what Breitbart said when asked if he might have vetted the Sherrod footage more carefully if given another chance. Let me think about that? Some people have called this incident a referendum on racism. I don’t think so. It was a referendum on editing. A referendum on Internet blogging. A referendum on our blazing desire for explosive moments -- even out of context -- and our creeping slowness to see the full picture. Anyone who watches the whole tape of Sherrod’s speech sees an honest woman who tells of an incident with a white farmer 24 years ago that made her question her own prejudices. She goes on to say such things as: “Working with him made me see that it’s really about those who have vs. those who don’t ... and they could be black; they could be white; they could be Hispanic.... “God helped me see that it’s not just about black people ... I’ve come to realize that we have to work together ... we have to overcome the divisions that we have....” Yet, even after all that, Breitbart’s website contains pieces like “If Anyone Needs To Apologize, It’s Shirley Sherrod.” Breitbart actually said the following of Sherrod: “This person has not gotten past black vs. white.” Sounds like he can’t get past something himself. What standards? And that, of course, is hate. Hate makes the political world spin, particularly the blog world. The shrieking Ann Coulter, who can’t possibly be taken seriously, actually claimed Breitbart was a “victim” of whoever set him up with this video. Sorry, but you can’t fan your fame with “blockbuster” revelations, then blame others if they turn up bogus. It’s like knocking over souvenirs in a curio shop; you break it, you bought it. Breitbart broke it, he bought it, but instead of taking responsibility for it, he spins and points to anyone else, the liberals, Obama, the NAACP, even Sherrod herself, a woman who was nothing more than a pawn. “I believe that I’m held to a higher standard,” Breitbart actually told Politico. “If this video showed a picture of a Caucasian talking in the exact same way but talking about a black person with an audience affirming and clapping that behavior, the reporter would be getting a Pulitzer Prize right now.” Response: 1) No, he wouldn’t. 2) Showing an edited video is not “reporting.” 3) You, Breitbart, are not held to any standard. And that’s the problem.

When Iraqi forces began pouring over the border into neighboring Kuwait, most Americans would have had a hard time finding the country on a map. Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein ordered his troops to occupy Kuwait on Aug. 2, 1990 – calling the oil-rich nation Iraq’s “19th province.” At the top of the Persian Gulf, Kuwait is a strategic country. It is a prominent member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. It has one of the highest standards of living in the world. Controlling Kuwait meant that Iraq would significantly increase its share of the world’s oil reserves. The world was shocked by the Iraqi move, and neighboring Saudi Arabia was alarmed. No one was sure whether Iraq would stop at the border with Saudi Arabia or move forces into some of the most productive oil fields in the world. A total of 140,000 Iraqi soldiers, supported by 850 tanks, entered Kuwait on Aug. 2. While tensions with Iraq were high, Kuwait had not alerted its forces. Iraqi aircraft bombed Kuwait City and the air bases in the country. Kuwaiti army units launched attacks against the invading forces, but they were far outnumbered, and the ruling family barely was able to escape to Saudi Arabia before Iraqi forces ringed Kuwait City. Kuwait turned to the United Nations, and the Security Council passed a resolution calling for Iraq to withdraw from Kuwait and asking member nations to work together toward that goal. President George H.W. Bush ordered American air, sea and ground forces to Saudi Arabia, beginning Operation Desert Shield on Aug. 7, 1990. That day, the Air Force sent 48 F-15 fighters of the 1st Fighter Wing from Langley Air Force Base, Va., to Saudi Arabia, where they immediately began patrolling the SaudiKuwait-Iraq border areas. The Navy sent the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower and USS Independence carrier battle groups to the region. The Army and Marine Corps mobilized to send ground forces to Saudi Arabia, with the leading edge of the Army’s 82nd and 101st airborne divisions arriving Aug. 8. Defense Secretary Dick Cheney and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Army Gen. Colin L. Powell began a schedule of near-constant traveling to meet with counterparts around the world. Those other nations hurried troops, ships and aircraft to the area, where they

fell in on the American and Saudi forces and what was left of the Kuwaiti military. The coalition that eventually formed was broad-based, and included 34 nations from Argentina to Bangladesh. Iraqi neighbors Qatar, Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt also participated to roll back the aggression. The troops landed in Saudi Arabia during the hottest time of the year. Anyone who can afford to tries to leave Saudi Arabia in August; the temperatures regularly rise to more than 130 degrees, and the prevailing winds from the Persian Gulf bring humidity. The media were full of pictures of American servicemembers slamming down bottles of water as sweat stained their “chocolate chip” desert camouflage uniforms. In the United States, Desert Shield necessitated the first major call-up of reserve component forces since the war in Korea. Under an order Bush signed on Aug. 22, National Guard and other reserve-component forces reported for duty. The coalition commander they reported to was Army Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf. The media called him “Stormin’ Norman.” A West Point graduate who had served in Vietnam, Schwarzkopf had been the commander of U.S. Central Command since 1988. One of the plans on Centcom’s shelf was the defense of the oil fields against an Iraqi invasion. At the time, the Iraqi army was the fourth-largest in the world. American planners stressed the force was battle tested and had a large percentage of combat veterans from the Iran-Iraq War in its ranks. That war – the first launched by Saddam Hussein – lasted from 1980 to 1988, and Iraq held its own against a country three times larger. Centcom officials expected a battle to drive Iraq out of Kuwait would be long and costly. At the beginning of August, there was little that would halt any Iraqi offensive into Saudi Arabia. By the middle of the month, air, sea and ground assets had grown. By the end of August, Desert Shield had grown to be able to defeat any attack into Saudi Arabia. Now the question was: What next?

projects. A task force of more than 700 U.S. service members will be working closely with their Mozambican counterparts for the duration of the 10-day exercise. The team, comprised largely of reserve Marines, began arriving at Maputo’s largest military base, July 29.

MOAMBA, Mozambique — Under the powerful rays of the African sun, Marines and their Mozambican counterparts ran sprints, hurled dummy grenades, lifted and carried 30-pound ammunition cans, and zigzagged through obstacles while dragging and fireman carrying their comrades. U.S. Marines with Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, and soldiers from the Armed Forces for the Defense of Mozambique (FADM) participated in the Marine Corps’ Combat Fitness Test together during Exercise SHARED ACCORD 2010, Aug. 6, in Moamba, Mozambique. “I’m going to teach this combat fitness test to other soldiers,” said FADM Pvt. Iassine Saide, a soldier with the Army Command Center. “The test taught us some great resistance exercises and diverse military skills.” The Marines were very motivating, according to Saide. He also liked how the test was about more than simply building muscles. “They never stopped encouraging us,” said a smiling Saide. “They were always pushing us to run faster and never stop. I lifted the ammo cans 80 times in two minutes.” The Marines of H&S Co., 2/25 - from Sgt. Maj. James T. Adams, battalion sergeant major, to Lance Cpl. Conrad Haye - said they enjoyed sharing their Combat Fitness Test with the Mozambicans. “They really put out some good effort,” said Haye. “It’s difficult getting used running the test in cammies (boots and utility pants), but they picked up real quick and performed great.” Shared Accord mentoring objectives include the Marine Combat Fitness test, staff training, small unit tactical training, and humanitarian civic-assistance programs to include medical services, dental services, and engineering

USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) returned to her homeport of San Diego Aug. 8 following participation in Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2010, which concluded Aug. 1 with a reception hosted in the aircraft carrier’s hangar bays. More than 1,500 participants, distinguished visitors and special guests celebrated the official end of RIMPAC 2010, which began June 23. Thirty-two ships, five submarines, more than 170 aircraft and 20,000 personnel participated in RIMPAC, a biennial exercise that originated in 1971. “Working with Sailors from around the Pacific provides the opportunity to learn from many different perspectives and reminds us how similar the challenges we face are,” said Australian Capt. Vaughn Rixon, Sea Combat commander. “Being able to walk away from RIMPAC with a better understanding of our region and our partners, and perhaps a better understanding of our own capabilities, is the best thing about being a part of this exercise.” The exercise gave the crew of Ronald Reagan a chance to familiarize themselves with other navies they would not normally be working with and to participate in different ceremonies and activities used to increase the bonds of partnership with the participating countries. Throughout the exercise, RIMPAC units trained on basic warfighting skills. Reagan conducted a live Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) launch, firing at a simulated target. “It was pretty impressive,” said Cmdr. Sean Rando, combat direction center officer. “It was nice to see that our weapons system works as advertised.” The exercise allowed Reagan to test its RAM launcher weapons system for the first time since 2007. It also provided an opportunity for Sailors and Marines to watch as Reagan showed its weapon system in action. Sailors from Weapons department trained for the launch for several weeks prior to the event. Sailors aboard the Ronald Reagan had many different experiences over the course of RIMPAC. “I think I get the best experience of RIMPAC,” said Operations Specialist 2nd Class Julie Beduhn, a Sea Combat Command watchstander. “I am able to see and be involved with most of the operations the Ronald Reagan is involved in, and I get to work side-byside with Sailors from seven different countries while I’m doing it.”

FEATURE INTERVIEW By J.C. Anderson I

STEVEN BARBER Filmmaker and Humanitarian – An Interview Filmmaker Steven Barber makes things happen. He is a whirlwind; energy personified. When I spoke with him he was about to leave, taking three pallets of equipment on a C-17 transport plane bound for JPAC in this case, Tarawa, Japan. The documentary was signed off by three, four-star Generals. That is an impressive commendation. He took the time to speak with us, while the remainder of the photographic equipment was being loaded onto the plane. The owner of Vanilla Fire Productions is an incredible talent as a filmmaker, producer and writer, as proven by the many awards he has received for his first documentary of Return to Tarawa - The Leon Cooper Story. You can also see his many interviews with Larry King Live, Katie Curic and many more on You Tube. He was interviewed this year by CNN at Sundance for his newly released documetary Unbeaten, which has already gotten some “spin” about an Oscar nomination. Barber is constantly moving. His passion for life is akin to Lance Armstrong’s and his energy is like a double shot of Red Bull. Barber is calling, putting things and people together, always working on several projects at any one time, and yet he always has the time to take your call. Success for Barber is doing projects that bring to light people that should be in the spotlight for their heroism and overcoming of adversity. He never makes the story about himself, a rare attitude in Hollywood. “Until they are home, No man left behind”

without any medical resources available. This was the infamous Battle of Tarawa and the beach where it happened is now known as Red “Beach.” The following day, properly prepared, the marines took the beach. Over four thousand Japanese soldiers died over the next two days. The infamy of that battle has slowly become an “ancient war,” and a large number of those soldiers that did not return, American and Japanese, will be lost as MIA’s. Filmmaker Steven Barber is not going to let this happen. His first documentary, Return to Tarawa, the Leon Cooper Story, introduced the battle to the world on April 24, 2009. Now, as you are reading this article, he is there on Tarawa with a forensic anthropologists team, and 15 marines. Barber and his team are hoping to bring home the remains of between fifty to two hundred soliders. These men will finally be given their appropriate honors, burials, and most importantly, closure to their families.

Larry King interviewing (Left to Right) Ed Harris, Leon Cooper and Steven Barber That is the motto of the U.S. Rangers and the Marine Corps. Filmmaker Steven Barber is making this happen for those who fell on the “Red Beach” more than sixty years ago during The Battle of Tarawa in the WWII Pacific Theater. Nine hundred ninety Marines were confirmed dead while two thousand two hundred ninety-six were listed as missing and probably killed on that

beach. It is November 20, 1943. Over three thousand young soldiers are ready to secure a full frontal assault on the Tarawa Island in Japan. They hit the beach, without appropriate armor, into what was essentially an ambush. Nine hundred men died that day and over twenty four hundred were wounded

Military Press: What does success mean to you? Steven Barber: “I’m there. I am so lucky. I am not in a wheelchair like the guys in Unbeaten. I live in the heart of my industry and I have the support and help of Tamara Henry MA, my muse, as well as my coproducer, webmaster and the one who makes all the technical aspects of our work happen. I guess if you asked about material success, I just bought a Gary Fisher Mountain Bike, and I love it. MP: How would you describe yourself in one sentence? SB: I am a very persistent, passionate, and hardworking guy.” MP: Your first major documentary was Return to Tarawa. Why Tarawa? SB: The idea came to me through a serendipitous meeting with Eddie Albert, the actor. I had met him by coincidence while I was out biking one day. I asked him for an interview, and he said sure come on over. He was taking, I was listening and looking around at the many fantastic pictures and memorabilia around his living room. There I was, engrossed in fascinating and priceless stories from a legend in the film industry when I notice a framed Bronze Star hanging on his wall. I asked him about it and he said that he had gotten it in WWII during the attack on Tarawa, Japan. So there I was, talking to a man known for his iconic films such as Roman Holiday, and his television series, Green Acres, while most of us had no idea that he had earned a Bronze Star for bravery and meritorious service in WWII. The conversation then took a turn to his time in the military. This aspect of Mr. Albert’s life just kept rattling around in my head for about ten years, until I met Leon Cooper. MP: How did Leon Cooper come into the project? SB: I was at the UCLA Book Fair where he was doing a book signing for his self published book The War in the Pacific - A Retrospective by Leon Cooper. There was a lot of interest, Leon had

FEATURE INTERVIEW I MP a mission. He wanted people to know about what had happened on those three days in 1943 at Tarawa, Island. I asked if he knew Eddie Albert, and he said absolutely! He had watched Eddie pulling bodies out of the water and on to the beach. It was horrific. Leon is one of the few remaining survivors of the bloodbath that the world knew very little about. His story was a perfect vehicle for a documentary. MP: Our research told us that President Roosevelt ordered this first amphibious landing in the Pacific Theater of WWII. I assumed that the orders would come with a plan in place and ready. That was not the case though. SB: Over nine hundred men died that first day. Leon told me they were completely unprepared, the intelligence had not been sufficient. Over the next two days the Marines took the island, and “won,” but not without great losses. So I made a proposal to Leon to go back to Tarawa together and show, through the camera’s lens, what happened on those three days in November in 1943. MP: In this tight economy where did you get the funding this documentary? SB: Leon funded the whole thing. He was that adamant that his fellow soldiers were not forgotten. He put in $200,000 of his own money. In February 2008 we went back to “Red Beach” only to find that it had become a trash pile, the water was still washing over derelict left overs of the M4 Sherman Tanks and various military machinery that were part of the amphibious attack that pressed on

to the beach that day. Since the area is an atoll much of the machinery was still stuck in the sand where it had been disabled. It was a tragic three days in Military history and I am proud of the documentary called Return to TarawaThe Leon Cooper Story. It was narrated by Ed Harris. Harris’s voice brings the monumental battle and loss right into the hearts of all veterans. MP: It was an award winning documentary that got a great deal of attention. We heard you are making a sequel. SB: Yes we are making the sequel at this very minute. We are on our way with a team of forensic anthropologists in an attempt repatriate our soldiers. We are hoping to find the remains of at least 50 and maybe as many as 200 soldiers. The fantastic thing is that we have Congressional support for this endeavor. MP: When can we expect to see the sequel? SB: I can’t give you an exact date but it has been sold to the Military Channel so you they will be in charge of the air date. MP: The film you released recently is called Unbeaten. What is this film about? SB: “Unbeaten is a story about four guys who lost the use of their legs and have not only overcome the adversity, but are making a statement about how you can thrive, not just survive. There are many others, including some of our military guys. However, our main “character” is an amazing man, Oz Sanchez.

These men are participating in the World’s Longest Wheelchair race from Anchorage to Fairbanks, Alaska. This is a grueling, 5 day, 267 mile, 55 miles per day, in a wheelchair don’t forget. It was an absolutely unbelievable race. Most people that lose the use of, or have their legs amputated are below thirty years old and many are closer to twenty years old. They still have a life time ahead of them, they still have hope. Unbeaten is about that journey, not only just having a “normal” life, but that magnificent success is possible after a major traumatic event that the majority of us would just fold under. In fact the statistics for depression, and suicide are very high among paraplegics. Most of these guys have lost not only their legs, but their wives, their jobs and many lose friends as well. People just change when they are around this new version of their “broken” spouse or friend. They don’t know how to live with what they perceive to be this new person. People who have not gone through life after the loss of limbs due to a spinal injury can not possibly understand it, Oz says. Oz fly’s, at his own expense, anywhere he can to help someone who is undergoing this devastating spinal cord surgery and the life changing events that following. MP: Thank you for your time Mr. Barber. One last question for those out there who are struggling with making their own dreams come true. As a filmmaker, a writer, or a survivor

Tamara Henry with Paul Mitchell of adversity. What is the secret? SB: I tried several “Steven Barber” based programs and none of them took. When I stepped outside myself, that’s when success came. It’s all about service.” Steven C. Barber.blogspot.com, and his interview on Larry King Live on You Tube. USS John S. McCain arrives in Vietnam to commemorate 15th anniversary of Diplomatic relatsions By Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Brock A. Taylor, Navy Public Affairs Support Element West Det. Japan

DA NANG, Vietnam (NNS) -- The guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) arrived pier side in Da Nang, Vietnam Aug. 10. John S. McCain, forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan, made the port call to commemorate the 15th Anniversary of the Normalization of Diplomatic Relations between the United States and Vietnam. This is the first time John S. McCain has visited Vietnam. “This is a historic event for USS John S. McCain,” said Cmdr. Jeffrey Kim, John S. McCain commanding officer. “For this ship and her crew, to be able to make our first visit to Vietnam, especially during this landmark event is truly an honor.” John S. McCain Sailors will interact with their Vietnamese counterparts during shipboard damage control and

search and rescue demonstrations, as well as exchanges in culinary arts. Off the ship, U.S. and Vietnamese Sailors will participate in friendly sporting events such as soccer and volleyball. Throughout the visit, Sailors will conduct community service projects at a local school and orphanage. The crew will also have an opportunity to learn about the country during liberty and hosted tours of Da Nang. Master-at-Arms 1st Class (SW/EXW) Jonathon Baker, from Columbia, S.C., whose father served in the Vietnam War, said that while the visit offers an opportunity to experience a unique culture, it’s also a chance for Sailors to play an important role in enhancing U.S.-Vietnam relations. “I really do encourage everyone to get out and see the country, and learn something about Vietnam,” said Baker. “Many of these junior Sailors’ parents and grandparents served in Vietnam. Now there are normalized relations between the U.S and Vietnam. We

should take full advantage of being a part of this historic process.” The Navy conducted two port visits to Vietnam in 2008. In 2009, USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) hosted the first-ever fly out of visitors from Vietnam to a U.S. aircraft carrier, and the U.S. 7th Fleet command ship USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19) and the guided missile destroyer USS Lassen (DDG 82), commanded by Cmdr. H.B. Le, a Vietnamese-American, visited in November 2009. The hospital ship USNS Mercy (T-AH-19) also visited Vietnam in May in part of a large-scale humanitarian assistance mission, Pacific Partnership 2010.

USS Porter Sets Sail for the Arctic and the Future By Bob Freeman, Office of the Oceanographer of the Navy

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- In response to an invitation from the Canadian government, USS Porter (DDG-78) and a Navy P-3 maritime patrol aircraft are headed north to join the Canadian navy in its annual Arctic military exercise, Operation Natsiq. U.S. Coast Guard and Danish naval assets are also joining the exercise. “This is a clear indication of the spirit of cooperation that exists between Arctic nations,” said Rea Adm. David Titley, Oceanographer of the Navy and director of Task Force Climate Change. Several high-level policy documents have prompted U.S. Navy interest in the Arctic, including the National Arctic Policy (National Security Presidential Directive-66/Homeland Security Presidential Directive-25), which states that the U.S. has “broad and fundamental national security interests in the Arctic region.” The need for a naval presence in the Arctic is further supported by the nation’s Maritime Strategy, the Congressionally-mandated Quadrennial Defense Review, and the Navy’s Arctic Roadmap, released last November. “Some people forget that the Arctic is largely ocean,” said Capt. Tim Gallaudet, deputy director of the Task Force. “The Navy has the same responsibilities there as in any other maritime domain.” “After years of record decreases in both ice coverage and ice thickness, it is clear that the Arctic Ocean is becoming more accessible to human activity,” said Titley. He mentioned that the two primary sea lanes around the Arctic, the Northwest Passage (along

the Canadian and Alaskan coasts) and Northeast Passage (along the Russian coast) were both navigable in 2008 for the first time in recorded history. Sea routes across the pole can save thousands of miles of transit time with significant fuel savings, and will become an increasingly attractive option for commercial shipping. The open water also allows access to massive oil, gas, and mineral reserves in the sea bed. Despite the melting sea ice, shrinking ice fields, and increased temperatures, the Arctic remains a very challenging environment. “The Arctic thaws in late summer, but freezes over again every winter, and we think that will continue throughout this century,” said Gallaudet. “An increasing number of climate scientists predict that we will likely see the Arctic Ocean basically ice-free for several weeks each year as soon as 20 to 30 years froms now.” This buys the Navy some time to prepare. The Arctic Roadmap recommends increased training missions in the high latitudes to prepare for probable future mission requirements. This will build a cadre of sailors experienced in polar waters, and help determine operational shortfalls. Operation Natsiq will give the crew of USS Porter an opportunity to get some experience in the far north, and help mission planners determine what future polar operations will require. It will also help build essential relations with some of our Arctic partners.

COURT ORDERS VA TO PUBLISH FINAL AGENT ORANGE RULE by Tom Philpott

An estimated 200,000 Vietnam veterans suffering from three diseases newly associated with exposure to Agent Orange are closer to receiving disability compensation following an appeals court order Aug. 2 directing VA to publish a final implementing regulation within 30 days. On a lawsuit brought by a coalition of veterans’ service organizations, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit instructed VA to issue by Sept. 1 a final regulation authorizing payment

of claims for ischemic heart disease, Parkinson’s disease, or B-cell leukemia for any veteran who stepped foot in Vietnam during the war, or their survivors. VA has been urging veterans with these diseases to file claims immediately because payments, when they begin, will be retroactive to the filing date. VA lawyers did concede to the court that VA had missed several deadlines set in the Agent Orange Act for reviewing the latest science report and for publishing rules to expand claims eligibility to these diseases. Still, they argued that VA could not publish a final regulation until the Office of Management and Budget completed its own review of the draft regulation. They also argued that the delays were reasonable given the complexity of the issues and the costs involved, and that veterans are protected from financial harm if they just file their claims immediately. The appeals court rejected those arguments. After final a regulation is published, VA still will have to wait 60 days under the Congressional Review Act to begin paying claims, given the cost of adding these three diseases to the list of ailments presumed caused by exposure to defoliants used in Vietnam. That would give Congress time to block the regulation, though that seems unlikely given that funds already have been approved for anticipated first-year and retroactive payments. If OMB completes its review soon, allowing rule publication before Sept. 1, payments could begin in October. If VA waits until Sept. 1 to publish its regulation, payments wouldn’t begin before Nov. 1. The Senate Veterans Affairs Committee still intends to hold a Sept. 23 hearing on how VA officials and independent scientists reached their decision on presuming these diseases were caused by Agent Orange. Navy Leaders Want Input from Sailors and Families on ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ By Lt. Cmdr. Erik Wells, Chief of Naval Personnel Public Affairs

The Department of Defense is asking and it wants Sailors to share their opinions about repealing the law commonly known as “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT). NAVADMIN 254/10 released Aug. 2 encourages personnel to participate in the 2010 Department of Defense Comprehensive Review Survey. The survey is designed to provide service members an opportunity to convey their views of the impact, if any, a change in the law would have on military readiness, military effectiveness, unit cohesion and recruiting and retention. The survey results will be included as part of the Secretary of Defense’s report due Dec. 1. Approximately 400,000 active duty and reserve service members have been asked to participate in the survey. The recipients of the survey were chosen at random across a range of ages, ranks and specialties. Survey specialists from the Defense Manpower Data Center worked with Westat, a private contracting firm outside the DoD, to conduct the anonymous and confidential survey. Also available is the opportunity to conduct a confidential, “online chat” with a Westat specialist regarding the survey. The survey will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. Sailors and family members who did not receive a survey may still provide confidential feedback online to the DoD Comprehensive Review Working Group by accessing the following website http://www.defense.gov/dadt. This is a CACenabled site.

Favre’s sexting pathetic for all the wrong reasons

Wednesday, August 5, 2010 was the day I lost all respect for Brett Favre. I never cared about his repeated indecision about whether or not to return to the NFL, it was sort of entertaining to see him jerk people around like that. I didn’t even care that he screwed over his loyal fans by signing with a rival team. What crossed the line for me was the wildly unsubstantiated report that he sexted “model” Jenn Sterger. That was the rage in the blogosphere on Wednesday. Deadspin claims the aged gunslinger, when he was with the Jets, allegedly sent several pictures of his genitalia to Sterger, who was working for the team at the time.

To be clear, I’m heavily in favor of sexting, but feel that the U.S. should probably pass an amendment to the Constitution limiting reserving the act to females. Favre’s problem to me is that this whole thing comes off as a pathetic attempt to be hip. Like, “hey, is this what the youngsters are doing? Well, look at me young lady, I’m doing it now, too!” Brett Favre isn’t a largely forgettable football analyst for ESPN, he doesn’t need to text pics of his junk to get laid. Even if he wasn’t a famous athlete, he is super-rich, and you don’t see any pictures of Bill Gates with his Microsoft hanging out. This is just like the rich and famous

version of your mom creating a Facebook page. That’s one poke you just don’t need to receive and it’s always awkward when your mom “likes” your status update about a drunk onenighter after 30-cent wing night. Everyone knows an adult like this. They try to be cool way after they should care. They brag about how much they like the new “Fiddy” CD (might as well call it a record) and how “sick” the beats are. They wear cargo pants. They say things like “how cool is that new Tweeter thing?” I get where Favre is coming from in his attempt to look cool. But he allegedly went about it all wrong. He’s

no Greg Oden. This photo isn’t helping raise his stock. It’s him, sans clothing, in a pair of Crocs. Either he’s clueless or he’s so arrogant, he’s saying with this text message “I’m Brett Favre, and you will have sexual relations with me in spite of me wearing Crocs, because I’m Brett Favre and you can’t resist, no matter how unforgivable my footwear.” I understand the pressure he’s facing as he’s getting old, but there is something to aging with grace. It’s okay to not be on top of every fad that comes along. But there are some people that just can’t go off into the sunset gracefully. One of those people is Joe Paterno.

SPORTS NEWS By Mark Chalifoux. I MP The big story from Big 10 media day is just how old he sounds. Slurring his words, rarely makes recruiting trips anymore, always spending his vacations in the crowd at the “Price is Right,” he’s just old. He’s done great for himself, but he needs to just go be old somewhere else. He shouldn’t be in the fire anymore. Such a high-profile job is just too much for most people, let alone people in their 80s. Another person who falls into the Paterno category is Hugh Hefner. I was at the Playboy Mansion in 2008 for a party and one thing that stuck out (among the many from a great night) was just how old he looked. It was in the way he moved more than anything. And sure, that place won’t be the same once he’s not there anymore but ... he’s old. He can’t stick around forever. Thankfully, Hef wasn’t out there the entire night, because nothing would be sadder than seeing him dragging along, looking tortured at the party palace he created. Whatever three girls replaced the reality-TV whores are just humoring him at this point, probably treating him with the same disinterest they reserve for a checkers game with grandma at the retirement home. Hugh Hefner is a legend, but he just can’t play the game anymore and it’s sort of sad to see. Brett Favre isn’t there yet, but signs like this are pointing to that conclusion. Just look at his other attempts to be hip and cool to the youngsters. He was all over the Vicodin fad in the late-’90s, I heard he even started singing, “I’m so excited, I’m so ... scared” before

his friends sent him to rehab. Then he endorsed Wranglers jeans, because his message for America was, “hey, look kids, there’s this new fad called blue jeans!” I have no doubt that Brett Favre is every bit the scumbag that Jenn Sterger allegedly alleges he is. The problem I have with Favre is that he’s trying to hard to act like a 21-century scumbag, and it just makes him look sad. If someone had called you Wednesday and said a high-profile NFL quarterback was in a sexting controversy after sending pictures of his penis to a team employee, you would’ve guessed it was Ben Roethlisberger 10 out of 10 times. Who knows, you’d probably be right but it just hasn’t come out yet. The point is, this is Roethlisberger territory. Those actions are for people of this generation. If he wants to enjoy the fruits of technology, go for it. But do it in the privacy of your own home. There are thousands of elderly men who served our country proudly in WWII and lived through some of the toughest times are country has seen. If they want to jack it to Internet pornography, dammit, they deserve it. But they shouldn’t be doing it at street corners and bus stops. Similarly, Favre can act like a scumbag and hit on younger chicks working in the periphery of his game, but he has to do it like the older generation. He needs to just get hammered at a game and keep yelling “I want to kiss you” during a TV interview. That is far more respectable than sending naked photos of himself. That’s not offensive, it’s just sad.

Blonde Escapee Three women escaped from prison. One was a redhead, one a brunette, and one a blonde. They ran for miles until they came upon an old barn where they decided to hide in the hayloft and rest. When they climbed up, they found three large gunnysacks and decided to climb into them for camouflage. About an hour later the sheriff and his deputy came into the barn. The sheriff told his deputy to go up and check out the hayloft. When he got up there the sheriff asked him what he saw and the deputy yelled back, “Just three gunnysacks.” The sheriff told him to find out what was in them, so the deputy kicked the first sack, which had the redhead in it. She went, “Bowwow”, so the deputy told the sheriff there was a dog in it. Then he kicked the sack with the brunette in it. She went, “Meow”, so the deputy told the sheriff there was a cat in it. Then he kicked the one with the blonde in it, and there was no sound at all. So he kicked it again, and finally the blonde said, “Potatoes.” For advertising information call: (858) 537.2280

SPORTS INTERVIEW By Brad Oremland I MP

Interview with Tony Gonzalez Tony Gonzalez is one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history, maybe the greatest. Among active players, he ranks in the top five for receptions, receiving yards, and receiving TDs. He’s made 10 Pro Bowls, and not just on reputation. With NFL training camps getting under way, Tony took time to answer a few questions about the past and the present. Thanks for taking time out of your schedule for this interview. How has offseason training been going? Been going great, same old thing, lifting weights and staying conditioned. We’re just about to head into camp and I’m feeling great.

Page 20 August 15, 2010 THE MILITARY PRESS

Last year, you moved from the Kansas City Chiefs, with whom you had spent your whole career, to the Atlanta Falcons. How do you like Atlanta ? Has the transition been pretty smooth? It’s been smooth at times and frustrating at others. Overall, it’s worked out well and we had a winning season last year. Atlanta is a great city and I’m looking forward to this year. I think everyone agrees that Matt Ryan has a lot of potential, and he’s already shown that he can be successful in this league. What does he have to do to take the next step? Experience. The more experience he gets the more confident he’ll get. It’s not a matter of if, just a matter of when as far as him being one of the best quarterbacks in the league. Hopefully that will come this year. You began your career playing for Marty Schottenheimer, who is the winningest coach never to reach the Super Bowl. Why do you think Marty’s teams tended to underachieve in the postseason? Do you see him as a Hall of Famer? I only played with him for one year, so I don’t know him too well. Football is a tough game, I don’t know if I would say he underachieved. I think he’s one of the best coaches ever. Without a doubt, he is a Hall of Fame coach. Just because he didn’t win a Super Bowl doesn’t mean he isn’t; football is the ultimate team sport and to win a Super Bowl, everyone needs to come together. You hold virtually ever major receiving record for tight ends, and many people view you as the finest ever to play the position. Do you ever think about your place in history? How do you feel about those kinds of accolades and comparisons? I don’t think about it too often. My approach has always been to take it one year at a time and then all of that other stuff will add up. It’s one of those things that when I’m all done I can look back, but right now, I’ve got things to accomplish, so I’m looking forward. In Kansas City , you played the Chargers twice a year. How well do you know Antonio Gates? Are there any young tight ends in the league right now who remind you of yourself? I know him pretty well actually, he’s a good guy. As for tight ends that remind me of myself, I think Kellen Winslow, Jr. does. He’s got a lot of talent and it will be interesting to see what he can accomplish. Who’s another opponent you admire? Ray Lewis from the Ravens. He’s been around for ever and kept himself in shape. He’s still at the top of his career and you have to respect that. You’ve recently endorsed a new product called All-Pro Science. Can you tell us a little about it and what drew you to this product? Actually, I’m not endorsing it, I am

the co-founder. A lot of people know I’ve changed my diet a lot and have become really conscious of what I put into my body. after practice. It’s real good quality stuff and tastes great, too. You’ve made 10 Pro Bowls. Last season, for the first time in 30 years, the Pro Bowl was not held in Hawaii, instead being played at the Super Bowl site in Miami the week before the game. Do you view that as a good idea, or is there something special about Hawaii? Is it strange to you that the league held an all-star game without anyone from

the two best teams in the league? I love Hawaii, but you have to understand why the NFL made the move. They had the highest ratings in 30 years. When the Pro Bowl is after the Super Bowl, people have already checked out of football mode and they don’t tune in. Let’s not kid ourselves, this is a business. Of course it’s special for us players to go to Hawaii and of course we love it. I think that’s just what

we have to deal with. You can’t have it all. Last question, and thanks again for your time. Fans and writers love to debate this question, so I’ve got to ask you: Tom Brady or Peyton Manning? Hmm ... both of them. Haha, I’ll take both. I know no one is going to like that answer. Really, it doesn’t matter, just flip a coin and whoever it lands on you’re going to be all right.

SPORTS Q & A By Jeffrey Boswell I MP

SURVIVOR Jimmy Johnson’s Market Penetration

FOX Sports NFL analyst Jimmy Johnson is currently a contestant on the CBS series Survivor: Nicaragua, which will air in September. Johnson, who coached the Miami Hurricanes to a national championship and the Dallas Cowboys to two Super Bowls, is also a spokesman for ExtenZe male enhancement pills. What should we make of Johnson’s status as a celebrity endorser and reality star? More power to Johnson. And more power to ExtenZe and CBS for procuring such an iconic figure to further their respective brand recognitions. Johnson is a well-known former NFL coach and led the Dallas Cowboys to two Super Bowls in the early 1990s. Those are no small feats, but obviously, there was some glory missing from his life. He may be “ringed” like a Cowboy, but apparently that didn’t preclude his desire to be hung like a horse. Obviously, Johnson’s master plan is to spread the gospel of ExtenZe to the far reaches of Central America and beyond, should his time in Nicaragua go well. Isn’t ExtenZe’s slogan “Go worldwide.” It’s not? Well, it should be. Johnson’s appearance on Survivor is good for ExtenZe, and his endorsement of ExtenZe is good for Survivor. Both entities will benefit from Johnson’s association. It’s what they call in the business a “package” deal.

For Survivor and CBS, it means better ratings. For ExtenZe, it means more exposure, and therefore more sales. In a capitalist economy, it’s “market penetration” at its finest. The reasons for becoming a spokesman, and, I’m assuming, a user, of ExtenZe are obvious — the payoff, monetary and otherwise. Johnson was concerned that his nude scenes on Survivor would leave him exposed like a Dallas safety on a corner blitz. With ExtenZe under his belt, Johnson will have the confidence necessary to take charge in Nicaragua, confidence that comes with a larger Johnson. And, Lord knows, you want to be confident when traipsing around the Nicaraguan coastline wearing nothing more than a loincloth. Johnson should be a natural when it comes to the Survivor game. His takecharge personality and up-front attitude should serve him well. The rules are simple: impose your will upon 16-20 money-hungry numbskulls and media whores and outwit them, shaping and bending their will to fit your agenda. It sounds a lot like coaching the Cowboys, just with closer proximity to the South American cocaine supply. And what better way to extOl and exaLt the miraculous glories of ExtenZe than around a campfire, graciously accepting compliments as you

Page 22 August 15, 2010 THE MILITARY PRESS

display the fruits of this terrific herbal supplement? If this were televised on Comedy Central, they’d call it “Roasting a Weenie.” Sounds very un-manly, does it not? But if anyone can pull it off and make it appear manly, Johnson is the one to do it. He’s a man’s man. It takes one heck of a man to admit he need’s “enhancement,” it takes an even bigger man to go on national television and admit the same. It takes even more of a man to profess to use this glorified placebo and claim that it works, then appear on one of television’s most popular shows, where perverted, voyeuristic viewers will be looking for evidence that it does, or doesn’t, work. Clearly, Johnson will use his connections to ExtenZe to build a powerful alliance on Survivor, and you can bet many nights will be spent passing the ExtenZe bottle around the campfire as if it were a “piece” pipe. In Survivor strategy, size matters, at least where the number of members in your alliance are concerned. Of course, this will probably only work on the male contestants; Johnson will need to employ a different strategy on his female counterparts. They are, naturally, “harder to reach,” which I believe was a rejected slogan for ExtenZe’s initial advertising campaign. But Johnson’s a lot like Michael Irvin

— he’s always had a way with the ladies who are paid to be there. Suffice it to say Johnson will exteNd an irresistible invitation to the female contestants, and lure them with sweet talk, like saying “I can see great things in you,” or “Member-ship has its privileges.” Johnson has a great chance to win Survivor: Nicaragua and walk away bowlegged with the $1,000,000 prize. And, if he’s not the last person standing at the end, you can best believe he’ll go down swinging, and he certainly won’t leave with his tail between his legs. Whatever the outcome of Survivor, the real fun starts when Johnson returns to the FOX NFL Sunday set, where he’ll be ribbed for the viewers pleasure. Of course, there will be 10 or so minutes of mindless chatter and giggling on the subject in a segment that will undoubtedly be called “The Prattle of the Bulge,” or “Crotch Racket.” And Frank Caliendo’s skits are writing themselves themselves as we speak. How’s this? “I’m Frank Caliendo for male enhancement supplement ‘Hardalot.’” And Howie Long’s name just got funnier. And Curt Menefee will boast that physiological stereotyping insists he doesn’t need any type of supplement. The FOX crew will be entertained, and, by extenZion, so will we.

Strickland excited Personal loans to play for Bolts in 24 hours or less. Looking to add depth, talent, and leadership to the secondary the San Diego Chargers signed Donald Strickland to a two-year contract on March 18. A seven-year veteran who’s had stints with the Colts, Eagles, Forty Niners and Jets; Strickland was brought in to compete for the all-important nickel back position. As the Chargers prepare for their first preseason game versus the Chicago Bears, MP reporter Art Garcia recently caught up with Strickland during training camp to ask him a few questions.

mindset as an aggressor now. AG: Leading up to the playoff game here last January, what were your thoughts as a team coming to play the Chargers? DS: We knew they were a high-profile offense with Philip Rivers being one of the best quarterback’s in the league with some capable wideouts and a tight end who is an All-Pro. But our mindset was just to play our game, get up in their face and try to dictate the pace of the game. AG: Are the Chargers regarded as a soft team or a finesse team by players on the East coast? DS: I wouldn’t say they were regarded as soft, I just think they were the marquee team in a conference that was trying to build itself. They were 13-3 last year and were a great team but we just came in here with a lot of confidence. AG: Did you set any goals for yourself coming into this season? DS: I want to learn the nickel position and build from there. To be on this team is the number one goal right now, so I have to learn the nickel position and master it… That’s been one of my strengths and that’s why I’ve been around the league so long. AG: That was my next question – what has been the key for you to be able to last seven years despite all the injuries? DS: God-given talent, I soak my body in Epson salt the night before to help get my bones right. I’ve had a strict regimen – I followed protocol as far as being here all of the offseason -- I didn’t miss a day. When I workout by myself I drink a lot of soy milk, jump a lot rope, and do a lot of footwork… I tore my groin in the AFC championship game last year so one of the big factors is healing that and getting my core abdomen and hip flexors strong. That’s been my priority so far. AG: The Jets advanced to the AFC Championship game last year, what’s it going to take to get this team over the hump and into the Super Bowl? DS: I think it’s just having confidence and coming out and winning that day. We just need to continue to get better and remain consistent, that’s they key. You can’t just play a week good and then fall off the following week. They’ve had the strength of winning by going on streaks, and while that’s a good thing you can’t get lackadaisical once you get to the playoffs when teams are aiming at your chest. When you know that you have that bulls-eye on your chest you have to know that and be ready to play. In the playoffs they seemed a little tense where they weren’t really themselves and I guess that was a credit to us and how we applied the pressure.

AG: What are your thoughts about joining the Chargers and were there other teams interested in you? DS: It’s a wonderful situation to come to a team that can go the distance. They have a great cohesiveness with team chemistry along with a great defense and secondary… I’m just excited to be a part of it. Sometimes you don’t have a choice where you go but I think they picked me up after they saw how I played against them with the Jets last year in the playoffs. When I got released by the Jets because of injuries they picked me up on the rebound. AG: As you enter your eighth season in the NFL, the Chargers are your fifth team since you were drafted by Indy in 2003 -- do you feel like you have something to prove? DS: There’s always something to prove out there every year, that’s part of just playing in the NFL. I’m going on my eighth year, I’ve been around. I know what it takes to be a caliber NFL player and I just want to help this team win. AG: What do you feel you bring to this team? DS: I’m versatile as a defensive back – I can play the nickel, I play corner, and I can play at safety if they need me too. I think tackling is one of my specialties… I just go out there and play hard. I don’t have any preferences as far as what position they put me as long as I play – as long as I’m out there making plays they can put at linebacker and I don’t care. AG: Do you see any similarities with this Chargers squad and the Jets team that knocked them out of the playoffs last year? DS: I think we’re taking on the concept of putting on more pressure as a defense as opposed to sitting back and letting the offense dictate what is going to happen. The redesigned Corvette!

Chevrolet Corvette The Chevrolet Corvette is an American sports car by the Chevrolet division of General Motors. The first model was designed by Harley Earl and introduced in 1953. Myron Scott is credited for naming the car after the corvette, a small, maneuverable warship. It has been produced in six generations in coupe, convertible, t-top coupe, and targa coupe body styles. Originally built in Flint, Michigan and St. Louis, Missouri, it is currently built at a GM assembly plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The National Corvette Museum, also located in Bowling Green, documents the car’s worldwide history and hosts an annual National Corvette Homecoming. In 2003, the Corvette became the first and only American sports car to celebrate its 50th anniversary. The Chevrolet Corvette is often marketed as, and quoted as being “America’s Sports Car”. The Corvette is the official Sports Car of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The first generation Corvette was introduced late in the 1953 model year and ended in 1962. These cars are often referred to as the “solid-axle” models since the independent rear suspension did not debut until the 1963 Sting Ray. 300 hand-built polo white Corvettes were produced for the 1953 model year, making it the rarest and one of the most sought after of all Corvettes. The 1955 model saw the introduction of the 265 cu in (4.34 L) V8 engine offered as an option, however the first seven off the production line featured the standard “Blue Flame” Inline-6.

It doesn’t get much sexier than this! A new body was introduced for the 1956 model featuring a new “face” and side coves; the taillight fins were gone. An optional fuel injection system was made available in the middle of the 1957 model year. It was one of the first mass-produced engines in history to reach 1 bhp (0.75 kW) per cubic inch and Chevrolet’s advertising agency used a “one hp per cubic inch” slogan for advertising the 283 bhp (211 kW) 283 cu in (4.64 L) Small-Block engine. Other options included power windows (1956), hydraulically operated power convertible top (1956), four speed

manual transmission (late 1957), and heavy duty brakes and suspension (1957). The 1958 Corvette received a body and interior freshening including quad headlights, bumper exiting exhaust tips, and a new steering wheel and dashboard, with all gauges mounted directly in front of the driver. Exclusive to the 1958 model were hood louvers and twin trunk spars. The 1959-60 model years had few changes except a decreased amount of body chrome and more powerful engine offerings. For 1961, a complete redesign

was made to the rear of the car; a “duck tail” with four round lights. The light treatment would continue for all following model year Corvettes. In 1962, the Chevrolet 283 cu in (4.64 L) SmallBlock was enlarged to 327 cu in (5.36 L) and produced a maximum of 340 bhp (250 kW) making it the fastest of the C1 generation. 1962 was the last year for the wrap around windshield, solid rear axle, and convertible-only body style. The trunk lid and exposed headlights did not reappear for many decades.

Sherlock Holmes and Watson The bar immediately becomes absolutely quiet. In a husky, deep voice, the woman next to him says,

Blonde Bar A blind man and his guide dog enter a bar and find their way to a barstool. After ordering a drink, and sitting there for a while, the blind guy yells to the bartender, “Hey, you wanna hear a blonde joke ?”

Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson went on a camping trip. After a good meal and a bottle of wine they lay down for the night, and went to sleep. Some hours later, Holmes awoke and nudged his faithful friend awake. “Watson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see.”

“Before you tell that joke, you should know something. The bartender is blonde, the bouncer is blonde, and I’m a 6’ tall, 200 lb.blonde with a black belt in karate. What’s more, the woman sitting next to me is blonde and she’s a weight lifter. The lady to your right is a blonde, and she’s a wrestler. Think about it seriously, Mister. You still wanna tell that joke?”

Watson replied, “I see millions and millions of stars.”

The blind guy says, “Nah, not if I’m gonna have to explain it five times.”

Holmes was silent for a minute, then spoke. “Watson, you idiot. Someone has stolen our tent.”

Page 26 August 15, 2010 THE MILITARY PRESS

“What does that tell you?” Holmes questioned. Watson pondered for a minute. “Astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo. Horologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three. Theologically, I can see that God is all powerful and that we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What does it tell you?”

In the service and wondering what’s next? A degree can help get you there

Are you in the service right now, considering your options following your military career? Serving our country is a noble cause, and one that creates not only a sense of loyalty, but also an abundance of opportunities in the form of leadership development and educational paths that can lead to fulfilling civilian and military careers. “I work on a daily basis with soldiers who just need a bit of guidance in realizing what they should do next, and their military background can serve them well in so many different career paths,” says Jeff Grimes, a Grand Canyon University military division employee and retired Air Force officer. In today’s labor market, transitioning active duty military personnel represent the single largest source of prospective employees. With approximately 275,000 members of the military entering the civilian job market each year, those with a college education will have an advantage. Though they are among the best-trained candidates in the job market, with hundreds of hours of specialized management, professional or technical training and experience, only 25 percent have college degrees, and 35 percent have attended some college. “Because of their public service experience, military students can make a natural transition to civilian careers in the business world or government,” says Grand Canyon University Military Division Director Dino Meyer. “Right now we’re seeing a tremendous amount of interest in degrees that emphasize leadership, management and selfdirection, such as public service administration.” Higher education enrollment among military students has surged over the last year with the passage of the Post 9/11 G.I. Bill, which provides education and housing benefits to individuals with at least 90 days of aggregate service on or after Sept. 11, 2001. The flexibility of attending college online is ideally suited

for those who remain on active duty, as well as those who are retired and want the convenience of working toward a degree on their own schedule. Before working with prospective students on a daily basis, Grimes served as a U.S. Air Force avionics technician and education service noncommissioned officer, helping, advising and engaging airmen on how to meet their educational goals. “With many soldiers attending classes on and off during their military careers, they might be closer than they think to getting that college degree,” Grimes says. Military personnel considering a college degree should research sources such as G.I. Jobs Magazine, which provides an annual ranking of the Top Military Friendly Colleges. Schools that have a military division will have a unique understanding of the nature of public service and the flexibility required for military students. These colleges help them leverage all available resources, including the new G.I. benefits, which require no pay-in, and the tuition is paid directly to the college, so enrollees don’t have to pay money up front or wait for reimbursement. The benefits can also be transferred to spouses and dependents. Grand Canyon University offers scholarship packages that cover the tuition difference between what the bill provides and the private university’s tuition - essentially providing a privateschool education entirely tuition-free. The university was recently nominated for a Freedom Award, a Department of Defense recognition that publicly highlights employers who provide exceptional support to military service employees beyond federal law requirements. With the university’s online and campus-based degree programs, troops have a myriad of options to meet their educational goals. More information is available at (800) 800-9776.

The scent of success: How aromatherapy can help your professional edge

In an increasingly competitive job market, many Americans are seeking every edge they can get to find a job, or keep the one they have. Stimulating the mind and memory function can help professionals feel more alert and “on their game.” Aromatherapy can be one more weapon in a professional’s business arsenal. Aromatherapy works to stimulate memory and the mind because our sense of smell is the only sense directly connected to the central nervous system. The nasal bulb, an area of densely packed neural receptors, sits near the center of our heads and interfaces directly with the brain. By contrast, miles of nerve pathways sit between the ears, eyes and the brain. Tying visual and auditory experiences to a distinct aroma can help us process, retain and recall visual and auditory data more effectively. The inspiring and memorable aromas of the botanical world can be recreated using essential oils. Essential oils are extracted from plants using steam distillation. They are completely natural, widely available, and can be great tools for stimulating mental clarity and the enhancement of memory. To learn more about Aura Cacia, a purveyor of 100 percent pure and natural essential oils and aromatherapy products in the United States, go to www. auracacia.com.

5 most memorable movies about greed “Greed, for lack of a better word, is good,” Gordon Gekko famously assured us. “Greed is right. Greed works.” Greed can also make for memorable films in which characters want, need, desire, and will do whatever it takes to have it all. Sometimes they get in over their heads in their schemes — which always makes things juicier — as we see in this week’s new release “Middle Men.” Inspired by the true story of the origin of Internet porn, it’s basically about a couple of guys who wanted to make a ton of money to buy more cocaine and hang out with gorgeous women at exclusive parties. Sounds reasonable. Here are five other movies that should satisfy your desire for more-more-more: • “Wall Street” (1987): Well, of course, where else would we start? Oliver Stone’s classic epitomized the conspicuous-consumption mentality of the 1980s and provided Michael Douglas with one of his best-known characters and best-known lines. (People always get it wrong, though. Corporate raider Gordon Gekko never

actually says “Greed is good” verbatim.) It also earned Douglas a best-actor Oscar, but truly, the slicked-back ‘do alone could have sealed the award for him. And it’s still relevant: The sequel, “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps,” is scheduled to hit theaters next month, starring Shia LaBeouf and featuring Douglas once more as Gekko, albeit with far less hair product. • “Citizen Kane” (1941): Who better personified the drive for bigger and better and more stuff than Charles Foster Kane? Just take a look at Xanadu, the palatial estate crammed with all the crap the millionaire newspaper tycoon amassed. He rose from poverty and began his career as an idealist, but Kane’s desire for more newspapers, power and influence became allconsuming, until he died alone and shrouded in mystery. It’s the archetypal rise-and-fall story, and the larger-thanlife persona of director, co-writer and star Orson Welles, both on screen and in real life, added to the intrigue. Plus, you know, it’s largely considered the greatest film ever made. No biggie.

• “Fargo” (1996): One of the absolute best from Joel and Ethan Coen, it won two Academy Awards: for the brothers’ original screenplay and for best-actress Frances McDormand as the plucky, persistent and extremely pregnant small-town sheriff Marge Gunderson. But the greed part comes from an inept scheme by car salesman Jerry Lundegaard, played by the tremendous William H. Macy, who arranges to have his wife kidnapped to collect the ransom. This does not go as planned. Darkly funny and starkly photographed by the great cinematographer Roger Deakins, “Fargo” is a film you can watch repeatedly and see something new each time. You betcha. • “A Simple Plan” (1998): Similar aesthetically to “Fargo,” with its beautifully bleak winter landscape and Minnesota setting. But whereas that was a neo-noir, this is an emotionally complex family drama — a great example of people who aren’t as smart as they think they are getting into more trouble than they ever could have imagined. Bill Paxton and Billy Bob Thornton are equally excellent as brothers who discover $4 million in cash in a downed airplane. What should be a simple plan for the money ends up being anything but when greed and paranoia take hold. Director Sam Raimi ratchets up the tension as his characters make one bad decision, which leads to another, which leads to another ... • “Scarface” (1983): We’re going with the Brian De Palma version, not the 1932 Howard Hawks original, just

because it’s more fun. Admit it: You stop and watch it every time it’s on while you’re flipping channels. It’s such a guilty pleasure it’s irresistible — the clothes, the cars, the coke, that house with the giant, sunken bathtub and of course, the notoriously over-the-top performance from Al Pacino as drug lord Tony Montana. Like “Wall Street,” it’s an emblem of 1980s’ wretched excess. After all, Tony is told that the world is his, so why shouldn’t he want it all? Or as he so eloquently puts it: “In this country, you gotta make the money first. Then when you get the money, you get the power. Then when you get the power, then you get the women.” What more do you need?

A Bad Day A police officer in a small town stopped a motorist who was speeding down Main Street. “But officer,” the man began, “I can explain.” “Just be quiet,” snapped the officer. “I’m going to let you cool your heels in jail until the chief gets back.” “But, officer, I just wanted to say,...” “And I said to keep quiet! You’re going to jail!” A few hours later the officer looked in on his prisoner and said, “Lucky for you that the chief’s at his daughter’s wedding. He’ll be in a good mood when he gets back.” “Don’t count on it,” answered the fellow in the cell. “I’m the groom.”

Ohio firm sends medicinal botanicals to Iraq troops military personnel, but everyone in the world relieve themselves of agonizing pain brought on by so many ailments and injuries. The Netical Patch™ comes in three convenient sizes and can be applied to the main trunk of your body as well as arms, elbows, fingers, legs, knees and toes. The Netical Patch™ not only helps relieve aches and discomfort associated with physical injuries or musculoskeletal

problems, but also relieves pain of minor burns and helps heal minor cuts. Made from the extract of the nettle plant (Urtica dioica) the resins are extracted onto a 100 percent cotton cloth. Manufactured by Nettle Farms LLC, the Netical Patch™ is distributed through Transdermal Innovations, Inc. If you would like more information on the Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. organization, feel free to contact Elliott at 740-569-7495 or your local chapter. You can do your part to help the soldiers serving overseas by donating to the care packages or by helping with the postage. To find out more about the Netical Patch™ or to order yours, call 740569-4499 or visit the website www. transdermalinnovations.com.

Let us help you meet your measurements!

Boxes of the Netical Patch™ are ready to ship to troops in Iraq. Don Scott, botanical researcher and inventor, and Transdermal Innovations, Inc. plant operations manager Gary Ross presented Rose Ann Elliott, first vice president of the local chapter of Blue Star Mothers of America, with 40,000 patches to send to the troops in care packages each month.

BREMEN, OH – Nettle Farms LLC, a botanical herbal-ceutical company, was recently contacted by Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc., Ohio Chapter 10, to send its product to the troops in Iraq. The company quickly responded by donating over 40,000 topical applications in 10,000 packages. Nettle Farms produces a product, the Netical Patch™, which is known for topically reducing inflammation and pain associated with arthritis, gout, backaches, headaches, sore knees, muscles, tendons and so much more. Realizing how much pain the soldiers are suffering from on a daily basis, Rose Ann Elliott, first vice president of the local chapter of Blue Star Mothers of America, sought help from the Ohiobased firm. Elliott, who has three children in the military services, one of which is presently doing his second tour of duty in Iraq, realizes how important it is for the troops to have support from their family, friends and the community as well. The local chapter was formed in June 2007 in hopes of bringing local military families together and supporting those who are fighting in the war overseas. With this in mind, Elliott and other charter members started collecting names and addresses of military personnel to send care packages to each month. Care packages include snacks, dried fruits, nuts, jerky, powdered drink mixes, toiletries, liquid hand sanitizer, white socks, games, disposable cameras as well as many other items, including the Netical Patch™. The Netical Patch™ was developed

by Don Scott who suffered many years from osteoarthritis which caused unbelievable pain. He couldn’t walk at times and was often confined to a wheelchair. The discovery came by accident when Scott was working his farmlands and his tractor stalled. The only way out of the field was to walk; something that he had difficulty with over the years without some kind of support. Wrapping one foot around a club, Scott hobbled through a field of nettles. By the time he reached his residence, he noticed all of his pain was gone. This soon led to many years of botanical research and patent of the Netical Patch™. Throughout his research years, Scott applied the nettle patches on people from around the country, including doctors and athletes, with amazing results! Scott continues his quest to help those who are suffering with the marketing of this new product. An ex-serviceman himself, Scott knows first-hand how military troops suffer with aches and discomforts and is supporting the troops through his donation to the Blue Star Mothers of America. “The ancient American Indians, Egyptians, English, French, Germans, Greek and Roman armies used nettles extensively; not only as a food source, but also for their medicinal needs,” Scott commented. “I’m hoping by donating these patches, I can help our soldiers relieve their aches and discomforts. It’s so important for these young men and women to know they have support from home.” Scott’s quest is to help not only

The Other Guys Now playing in theatres from director Adam McKay and Columbia Pictures is a comedy about “The Other Guys”. This film tells the story of two detectives Allen Gamble (Will Ferrell) and Teri Hoitz (Mark Wahlberg). In back of the squad room these two are over shadowed by baddest and most beloved detectives Chris Danson (Dwayne Johnson) and P.K. Highsmith (Samuel L. Jackson). Tired of being ‘the other guys’ Gamble and Hoitz take on a case that no one else wants. This is their chance to prove their worth and bust up a crime ring. Neither of them get much support from their fellow officers or their boss

Captain Mauch (Michael Keaton). Hoitz tries to get out of the corner but his partner isn’t exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer. Life at home is also giving Gamble problems as his wife Dr. Sheila Gamble (Eva Mendes) is just his ‘ole ball and chain’. Stepping up could be the end of the police forces new dynamic duo, especially when you are the other guys. FINAL WORD: What can you expect when you pair the incredibly funny Will Ferrell with the absolutely handsome Mark Wahlberg? You get some kind of fun! Ferrell is endearingly ridiculous as Gamble. He plays his part extremely well as the straight-faced good cop. If you loved “Talladega Nights” and “Step-Brothers” than this is definitely a film for you. Wahlberg is delightful as the uptight Hoitz. It is nice to see him try more of his comedic side and what better way to stretch his legs than with Ferrell at his side. It will be back to the serious roles for Wahlberg as his next film “The Fighter” about ‘Irish’ Mickey Ward and the road to the world light welterweight title. Mendez seems to have the straight out comedy in the film. She is outrageous and is looking lovely. She honestly has some of the funniest lines in the film. It’s nice to see Michael Keaton again along with Damon Wayans, Jr. Other cast include: David Gideon as the Mayor, Joshua Church as the Hot Dog Guy, Rob Riggle as Martin, Damon Wayans, Jr. as Fosse, Ray Stevenson as Roger Wesley, and Derek Jeter as himself. A week ago both Ferrell and Wahlberg were entertaining San Diegans at Comic Con 2010 with their high energy and humor. Mendez also joined in the joking and had the audience cheering their antics. At one point while a trailer for the film was being shown, Ferrell was laughing to hard he had tears in his eyes, which had the audience laughing even harder. You never know what to expect from the funny man, as he also showed up dressed as his animated character “Megamind” which is being released in November also starring Tina Fey and Jonah Hill. TUBS OF POPCORN: I give “The Other Guys” three tubs of popcorn out of five. Although this duo has their flaws, it doesn’t stop the laughs. It’s a fun night at the movies with some memorable lines that I’m sure will be repeated as most Will Ferrell films do! Sure you can say its just another buddy cop movie but with Ferrell and Wahlberg behind the wheel and director Adam McKay at the helm you won’t be disappointed. In the end – when the cops are busy there’s always the other guys!

KIM NOVAK The blonde who got away “ALL RIGHT, All right! If I let you change me, will you love me then?” That’s Kim Novak to James Stewart in Alfred Hitchcock’s classic tale of obsession, duel personalities and deception, “Vertigo.” Kim’s portrayal of the moody Madeleine and the hapless Judy is her signature role, but the elusive star and survivor has other films, just as well known and similarly stamped with her hushed qualities of insecurity and sensuality. I chatted with Miss Novak the other day. She was calling from Oregon where she lives with her veterinarian husband of many years. The usually press-shy icon has been giving interviews and even appearing in Hollywood to promote the DVD release of “The Kim Novak Collection.” The set provides “Picnic,” “Bell, Book and Candle,” “Jeanne Eagles,” “Middle of the Night” and “Pal Joey.” (Alas, Kim’s great suburban soap opera, “Strangers When We Meet” with Kirk Douglas is not included.) The voice was unmistakable: “Hi, Liz, it’s Kim.” If you don’t know that deep vocal cadence you have clearly never been a movie fan! Indeed, Kim’s voice was even throatier than usual, no doubt from all the unaccustomed talking she’s been doing over the past week. “Sorry, for the frog,” she apologized. Novak, much like another shy star, Ann-Margret, is discretion itself when it comes to most matters in her personal life or in dishing others. And, as she was calling about the DVD set, it seemed correct to actually talk about her work. “Middle of the Night” is one of the films in the set that makes its DVD debut. In this 1959 entry, based on the Paddy Chayefsky play, Kim plays the young woman involved with a much older Fredric March. “Oh, I loved that movie, and I’m so glad it’s been kind of re-discovered. Everybody was so committed to the work, and I think it was because of Paddy’s words. He knew real people; he knew how to write real people. It was honest, simple writing. We became good friends. In fact, we were talking about doing something together on Broadway, because I was seriously thinking about the stage at that time.” I express surprise that Kim would have ventured on the stage at that point, but she says, “Oh, yes, with Paddy’s words, of course. I miss him a great deal.” I ASK Kim about her storied years at Columbia Studios, where she became a great star, and from which she eventually fled. “I enjoyed working there as long as I was provided with good films, and a character I had strong feelings about. I was always interested in who she was, what she wanted, more even than what was on the page. “The problem was, honestly, I didn’t get very good reviews on a lot of my films. But, see -- I believed in what I was doing. I believed I was correct in my interpretation. It seemed to me, the critics wanted some kind of outstanding, stylized overacting, but I felt simplicity was best. I was sure it was. Then I’d read the reviews and become confused

-- was I really so wrong in my judgment? I lost some confidence. I didn’t have a lot of self-worth at that time, but I did believe in the characters I played. In that, I was stronger than with decisions I might have made personally. Basically, the best roles I did, they were me. In ‘Picnic’ when I say, “I get so tired of being the pretty one!’ That was me. I didn’t want to be only that. I could relate to her, and the way she felt about how others viewed her.” WAS IT true, that Harry Cohn, the fearsome head of Columbia Studios used to call Kim up at home and read her the bad reviews? Kim can laugh over it now. “Oh, yes, he did! But you see, Harry wanted to keep you under his thumb. Well, for one thing, he didn’t want to pay anybody anything more. But he liked or needed to have you be insecure, to not believe in yourself. I guess it was power and control, but he definitely preferred a star who was off-kilter in terms of selfesteem.” That must have been horrible, I said. Kim laughs again, “It wasn’t nice. But you know what, for as difficult as Harry was, when he died, that studio died for a long time. There was nothing. And then they really had no idea what to do with me. Hollywood categorized me as a blonde sexpot, period. And to go on doing that would have killed me. “The movies I was offered! Laughable. A beach movie, even. They said, ‘You’re going to do this’ and I said ‘Oh, no I’m not!’ and that was it. I left Hollywood, I moved to Carmel and Big Sur. I was never part of Hollywood anyway. I continued making movies, but I kind of considered my career over -- it ended with Harry Cohn. A career needs guidance.” (Still, fans fondly remember delicious fare such as “The Amorous Adventures of Moll Flanders,” “The Legend of Lylah Clare” and “The Mirror Crack’d” in which she delivers the funniest performance of her career.

For advertising information call: (858) 537.2280

In the latter film, she also spits out one of the great lines ever -- playing a movie star battling her director, she barks: “I could eat a can of Kodak and puke a better movie.”) I MENTION one of her post-Columbia movies, “Of Human Bondage” in which she did very well as the slattern Mildred, up against the memory of Bette Davis’ original turn. “Oh, God! I absolutely forgot about that.” Perhaps, I venture, because it wasn’t a very happy production? “It certainly wasn’t. Laurence Harvey was not the easiest person to get on with. In fact, if I had to choose between Larry and Harry Cohn as the worst, I’d be hard-pressed.” Another troubled production was Kim’s last film to date, 1991’s “Liebestraum” directed by Mike Figgis. “That did it for me. I had finally made peace, and thought, ‘Oh, come on, what’s so bad about making movies? So I went into that, and it was such a terrible experience -- I couldn’t get him to talk about the character or her point of view. In the end, it hurt me terribly, to this day it’s hurtful.” (Most of Kim’s scenes ended up cut from the finished film.)

BUT KIM would rather remember her recent night being honored in Hollywood, at the Egyptian Theater, where they screened “Bell, Book and Candle.” “First I said ‘yes’ and then I said, ‘ why did I say yes?’ I was dreading it. But when I got there, and everybody was so wonderful and the theater is so exquisite and seeing the movie -- oh, it took me right back. I could feel myself in Jimmy Stewart’s arms again. It was lovely and cathartic.” And then she purred, “However, it did not tempt me to ever make another movie!” I ask this ultimate survivor -- the blonde who got away -- why she did survive, and Marilyn Monroe didn’t? “I think it’s family, roots. Marilyn didn’t have that. Even if there are troubles in your family, at least it’s there. It gives your life a deeper substance, especially if you are working in a business that is so much about the insubstantial. You need something to fall back on. You need to know you are more than the face or the body or the career. Without that stability, you are lost.” Kim Novak may never make another movie, but she will be forever remembered as the star who never got lost.

Christina Hendricks

The body that drives ‘Mad Men’ mad “EACH INDIVIDUAL woman’s body demands to be accepted on its own terms,” said Gloria Steinem. SPEAKING OF bodies, one of the most famous belongs to Christina Hendricks, the astonishingly zaftig, redheaded secretary of TV’s hot retro-hit, “Mad Men.” Hendricks, who is a proud size 14 -- and all natural on top -- admits that her body held her back in Hollywood. She was told that she was just “too big” for starring roles. She refused to lose weight. Incredibly, she says, “I felt like I was invisible before ‘Mad Men.’ “ Now she receives accolades from Esquire magazine as “The Sexiest Woman Alive” and is mobbed whenever she appears on a red carpet. Yet, she says she is often faced with the problem of being up against size twos and zeros. Christina’s success is good news for women who don’t look like gym-toned 14-year-old boys with basketballs or grapefruits attached to their chests. Even better news is the success of Brooke Elliott in TV’s endearing “Drop Dead Diva.” Brooke is shorter than Christina, and her weight is more of an obvious issue, but she is a knockout personality -- and beautiful. (The plot? A vapid blonde model is killed in an accident and then brought back to life, in the body of a smart, savvy, but overweight lawyer. Many lessons are learned here about inner beauty.) Still, even with stardom, Christina Hendricks finds herself alone more

often than not. She told GQ magazine recently: “I don’t get hit on much in L.A. In L.A. you’re always in your car, and separated from people.” Come to New York, honey! Believe me, people are not separated. You’d get hit on. In fact, you’d start a riot.

fades to a sort of yucky yellow. Pink is a happy color; it makes me feel younger.” TWO-TIME Oscar winner Hilary Swank has turned up the heat on her three-year relationship CAA agent John Campisi. The pair met when both were going

“EACH INDIVIDUAL woman’s body demands to be accepted on its own terms,” said Gloria Steinem. ALONG WITH extra pounds, women often obsess about graying hair. I say, look at the great model, Carmen, or the actress Judi Dench whose cropped white hair has become her signature look. Now another prominent woman is going gray. Kristen McMenamy, the 45-year-old British model, has allowed all the grays to come in. She says, “You can get older and still be rock n’ roll!” This is fine and good, though my motto has always been, “You don’t get older; you just get blonder.” It worked for me. P.S. But don’t talk to fashion icon Zandra Rhodes about gray hair. Her mane has been famously pink for a long time and that’s how she intends it to remain. “I am not going gray. Pink is very easy to maintain.” “Years ago, I had it green, but green

Jesus And The Redneck An Irishman in a wheel chair entered a restaurant one afternoon and asked the waitress for a cup of coffee. The Irishman looked across the restaurant and asked, “Is that Jesus sitting over there?” The waitress nodded “yes,” so the Irishman told her to give Jesus a cup of coffee on him. The next patron to come in was an Englishman with a hunched back. He shuffled over to a booth, painfully sat down, and asked the waitress for a cup of hot tea. He also glanced across the restaurant and asked,”Is that Jesus over there?” The waitress nodded again, so the Englishman said to give Jesus a cup of hot tea, too. The third patron to come into the restaurant was a Page 34 August 15, 2010 THE MILITARY PRESS

through divorces (she from actor Chad Lowe). Campisi was her new agent. They clicked as friends but were wary, natch. Still, love finds a way, and eventually Campisi dropped her as a client and picked up on the strong feelings he had for her. Now they are hot and heavy, perhaps talking marriage. They certainly looked the picture of bliss last weekend at the Parker Hotel in Palm Springs. He filled their suite with flowers -- they swam, held hands, embraced constantly and couldn’t have cared less that busybodies were watching them, so as to tell busybodies like me, who then pass the information on to you. (I won’t tag any of you as busybodies because I know all you care about is what they say on “Meet the Press.”)

Redneck on crutches. He hobbled over to a booth, sat down and hollered, “Hey there sweet thang, how’s about gettin’ me a cold glass of RC!” He too, looked across the restaurant and asked, “Is that God’s boy over there?” The waitress nodded again, so the Redneck said to give Jesus a cold glass of RC, too. As Jesus got up to leave, he passed by the Irishman, touched him and said, “For your kindness, you are healed.” The Irishman felt the strength come back into his legs, got up and danced a jig out the door. Jesus also passed by the Englishman, touched him and said, “For your kindness, you are healed.” The Englishman felt his back straightening up,and he raised up his hands, praised the Lord and did a series of back flips out the door. Then Jesus walked towards the Redneck. The Redneck jumped up and yelled, “Hey, man, don’t touch me...... I’m drawin’ disability!!!!!”

fried chicken and mac and cheese. Unfortunately, the buffet table was so shrouded in darkness it took the helpful ministrations of the staff to point out what was available. “That’s the mac and cheese,” said one adorable fellow, pointing to a shadowy mass that looked anything but appetizing. (Turned out it was great!) THE CROWD was as young and “sexy” as I’d been warned and included Dallas Roberts, Blake Lively, Mark Sanchez, Rob Thomas, Ewan McGregor, Mamie Gummer, Tony Goldwyn, Wilmer Valderrama, Nicole Miller, Carlos Leon, etc. (But the place was so dark I could hardly make out a soul -- not even on the roof, which was pleasantly airy.)

TREETOP

“Anxiety seems to be the dominant fact -- and is threatening to become the dominant clich√© -- of modern life,” wrote somebody in Time magazine back before the age of cell phones and the Internet. OKAY -- Here is a fabulous, glamorous evening in little old New York. First I’m off to the Iridium bar and cafe on 51st and Broadway to see a singer, one Nikki Yanofsky. I am doing this because my friend Liz Rosenberg -- of Michael Buble and Cher and Madonna fame -- has assured me that the girl has real talent. “You don’t have to write about her, if you don’t like her,” Liz says, and I know she means it. Traffic is heavy and I am a little late. The place is dark and cool and packed with music knowit-alls. Little Miss Nikki, all of 16 years young, is up on stage wearing a glitter top and denim cutoffs and looks like a hot surfer girl who has had a makeover at the Saks counter. Then she rips into a stunning version of Sam Coslow’s “Mr. Paganini,” which was made immortal by Ella Fitzgerald. No offense to Ella but Nikki put the swang into swing with a voice so big they had to turn down

the mike! She sang another number and surely she is the love child of Miss Fitzgerald and Anita O’Day! Alas, I had another appointment -- a screening of the new movie “Twelve,” which stars Chace Crawford, Emma Roberts, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Billy Magnussen, Zoe Kravitz and Ellen Barkin. I left Liz and Nikki -- whose selftitled album is number one on Billboard’s Heatseekers Chart -- and attempted to head downtown to Houston Street. Traffic! We crawled on, and finally appeared to reach something that looked like my destination -- 143 East Houston Street, the Sunshine Cinema. NO. Houston Street was blocked. Totally. So, it was an accident or some construction. I got out of the cab and attempted to walk to the event. NO. Everything was blocked. I asked a nice policeman what was up? “Obama was here.” “Obama was here? He isn’t now?” “I don’t know lady. It’s the president.” Thanks; I know that. It simply doesn’t seem possible that I can’t get to where I’m going, so I catch another cab and ask to be taken to West Houston Street. Surely I can navigate from there. NO. Houston Street appears to be entirely locked down. “Obama is here,” says another nice young policeman. “You

GL AS

The Fabulous Start to a Terrible New York Night

mean Obama was here?” “It’s the president lady.” Yes, I got it. I voted for him, could I please get to my screening? (And what was he doing downtown anyway? No room at Circo?) After some 15 more minutes of wandering and bothering New York’s finest, I manage to catch another cab and headed back to my office where I sent a sizzling e-mail to the event planner. (The very nice Andrew Saffir of The Cinema Society.) I mention how much cabs cost. Seconds later he replies, “OMG! You are not the only one. We held the movie as long as we could. OMG. Please come to the party.” I had not intended to go to this party, because it was advertised to me in advance as “sexy” -- a very young crowd. But nothing on TV was riveting, so I waited a bit and headed to The Standard Hotel on West 13th. Why not? When I arrived, at the appointed time, I was told, “nobody is here yet with the guest list.” Lingering on a hot, humid Manhattan sidewalk for 15 more minutes didn’t thrill me. Eventually the doors opened and the party room itself was really very nice -- a long dark bar with a great view of the skyline, a disco ball swirling above a wading pool. “Four Feet Deep!” “No Diving.” That’s what was painted on the sides of the pool. Nobody dived but eventually there was wading. Lobster rolls and little quiches were passed around, and there was a nice buffet that included wonderful

It was 48 years ago that Marilyn Monroe died Hmmm! Perhaps that will be the case if the mother of the bride runs for high office again at some point? Just wondering. YOU’VE HEARD, of course, of the big AIDS activists Bill Clinton, Elizabeth Taylor, Madonna, Sharon Stone, Elton John, Larry Kramer and Harvey Fierstein, to name just a few. But last week in Bar Harbor, Me., one of the brightest and best of all AIDS activists was laid to rest in the burial plot of her husband’s distinguished family, the Peabodys. Judy Peabody was in a class by herself. In the ‘80s and ‘90s, this genteel and lovely socialite forsook Manhattan’s salons and parties to help AIDS victims. From a privileged life -- enjoying herself, backing theater and ballet, and IT WAS 48 years ago today that Marilyn Monroe died. On the evening of Saturday Aug. 4, 1962, or the wee hours of Sunday, Aug. 5. (Talking to her therapist earlier in the day, she exclaimed, “Here I am. I am supposed to be the most glamorous woman in the world, and I don’t have a date on Saturday night!”) The legend, lure and mythology of Monroe endure. Recently, X-rays of her chest were auctioned off for more than $50,000! And but of course new voices can always be counted on to chime in. Singer Buddy Greco is the latest. About a month before Monroe’s death, Greco was staying at the Cal Neva Lodge outside Los Angeles. He was the guest of Frank Sinatra and Peter Lawford. Monroe arrived, looking “gorgeous” but soon deteriorated, impaired by barbiturates and champagne. Greco says a clearly upset Frank quickly dispatched her back to Hollywood. (The few photos that exist of this weekend show a shockingly thin Marilyn.) This is an infamous weekend in Monroe’s history, with rumors of mob figures present and sordid events occurring. In any case, Monroe was fired from her film shortly afterward, and soon after that, she died. (Greco misremembers, referring to his encounter as “her last weekend.”) Sinatra, by every account, was totally undone, devastated when word came of Marilyn’s death. (Sinatra’s valet, George Jacobs believes Sinatra would have married Monroe, if for no other reason than to “save her.”) In any case, Frank certainly never spoke of what really happened at the Cal Neva Lodge.

-- with whom she is apparently having her one big love affair. (Unlike Madonna or Barbra Streisand, who appreciate the fact that their fans show up at concerts, buy records, go see their movies and have made them gazillionaires. But neither quite understands fans that “live” for or through them, because they certainly don’t live for their fans. But for Gaga, the fans mean everything.) Lady G. also says that she is choosing to remain celibate -- or at least very choosy about whom she sleeps with -- because if she’s not, she is afraid her creativity will escape through her vagina. Too much information here! Of her drug taking, she does at least say her fans should not emulate her. “They don’t have to be that way to be great.”

being one of New York’s most prominent, well dressed women (her every move was comme il faut) -- she gave most of that up to devote herself to the sick and dying. She became a “hands on helper,” nurse and confidante, giving succor to those with no other hope. She leaves behind an inspiring legacy of self-sacrifice. She died after several strokes and a long illness, still loving parties, nice people, beautiful clothes and the glamour of ballet, but she had given her all against the scourge of AIDS. Her husband, Sam, and her daughter, Elizabeth, carry on all her traditions and our hearts go out to them. LADY GAGA is on the cover of the new Vanity Fair and apparently she speaks of many things -- drugs, drinking, her fans

“REGARDLESS OF his birth time, Chelsea’s Moon in Leo conjoins Marc’s Mars -- a nice and sexy combo indeed!” That’s my astrological pal, Shelley Ackerman, chiming in on the wedding of Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky. Oh, you know, the wedding that brought out the worst in everybody except the bride, groom and their families. Shelley does go on to state that the date of the wedding was “astrologically intense ... a great chart for a prize fight -- but a wedding? I’m not saying it won’t last ... but the marriage itself will somehow embody the dire and dramatic days of the summer of 2010. They will be much more public as a couple than either now realize.” For advertising information call: (858) 537.2280

Ellen DeGeneres leaving ‘American Idol’: Jennifer Lopez may soon be joining Fox show Ellen DeGeneres won’t be returning to “American Idol” next season. But Jennifer Lopez may soon be joining the “Idol” judges’ table. As first reported this afternoon by Variety, DeGeneres’ exit comes as Fox and producers FremantleMedia and 19 Entertainment plot a massive “Idol” overhaul. DeGeneres said she told Fox and the “Idol” producers months ago that she wasn’t comfortable with returning for a second go-round on the show. “I told them I wouldn’t leave them in a bind and that I would hold off on doing anything until they were able to

figure out where they wanted to take the panel next,” DeGeneres said. “It was a difficult decision to make, but my work schedule became more than I bargained for.” As for Lopez, the singer -- whose career has been on the skids for quite some time -- emerged as a true contender for the gig in recent weeks. While other names have been bandied about -- from Justin Timberlake and Jessica Simpson to Elton John and Sean “P.Diddy” Combs -- Lopez might make more sense. The singer is known for being brash -- witness her “Jenny from the Block” persona -- and has the

obvious industry background. Fox declined comment, however, on the Lopez talk. Insiders told Variety late Thursday that no deal is actually in place just yet -- and certain deal points might still stall her hire on the show. But Fox execs would ideally like to be able to announce Fox’s new “Idol” judge this Monday, the day of Fox’s TV Critics Assn. presentation. Lopez’s name came up in 2009 as a potential replacement for departing judge Paula Abdul, although she dismissed the idea at the time. DeGeneres’ departure comes as

she opts to devote her attention to her popular daytime “Ellen DeGeneres Show” -- which is now on track to fill the syndicated talk show void left by the departure next year of “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” What’s more, her exit and the wellpublicized departure of Simon Cowell now sets the stage for an “Idol” makeover. Several reports have speculated in recent weeks that Fox might opt to clear the judging panel (except perhaps for Randy Jackson, who has another year left on his deal). Rumors are spreading that Kara DioGuardi, who joined the show two years ago, might also not return. DeGeneres had another year left on her rich pact with “Idol,” but it’s believed that the host wasn’t quite comfortable with some of the critiques she had to give to contestants -- something she now confirms. “I also realized this season that while I love discovering, supporting and nurturing young talent, it was hard for me to judge people and sometimes hurt their feelings. I loved the experience working on ‘Idol’ and I am very grateful for the year I had. I am a huge fan of the show and will continue to be.” The reviews of DeGeneres’ performance on “Idol” also weren’t kind, as the popular comedian struggled to find her proper voice on the show. Then there were the reports of tension on the “Idol” set, as rumors of clashes between DeGeneres and prickly Cowell hit the Internet. “We love Ellen and understand and support her decision to bow out of ‘Idol,’” Fox Networks Group entertainment chairman Peter Rice. “We were fortunate to receive the humor, energy and love for talent that she brought to the show.”

that it had cleared “Ellen” in 99 percent of the country for 2011. But what’s more, the distributor said it had persuaded stations in 88 out of the top 100 markets to either keep or move “Ellen” into early fringe time periods (where “Oprah” currently dominates) “Ellen” is also set on NBC-owned outlets including WNBC New York and KNBC Los Angeles for several years to come. Fox alternative prexy Mike Darnell called working with DeGeneres “a joy.” “She brought an incredible spirit to ‘Idol’ and was a great new addition to the team,” Darnell said. “While we’re saddened by her decision, we are very appreciative that she gave us ample notice so that we could work through it together.” DeGeneres was tapped for the “Idol” gig last September; as part of the that deal, DeGeneres also sealed a deal with Warner Bros. that extended her daytime “Ellen DeGeneres Show” yakker through 2014. At the time, DeGeneres said she was a huge fan of the show and said she hoped to be the voice of the consumer on the “Idol” panel. “I love music,” she said at the time. “Hopefully, I’m the people’s point of view... I’m looking at it as someone who’s going to buy that music.” DeGeneres will still have her hands in the music biz, having signed YouTube star Greyson Chance to her new label in May.

It didn’t help that the show itself suffered from what was generally considered a lackluster season. “Idol” was down about 9 percent last year -still making it a monster hit, but eroding enough that rivals began to smell blood. Much of the cause of “Idol’s” decline has been attributed to the show’s lack of contestant star power. The exit of eccentric judge Paula Abdul may have also played a role, while the show also appeared to be hit by sloppy production values, as it frequently ran overtime. To address some of those issues, Fox already announced plans to alter “Idol’s” air pattern next season, when performance shows will run for 90 minutes Tuesday nights, with an abbreviated 30 minute results show Wednesdays. But the big changes are to come. Former “Idol” exec producer Nigel Lythgoe remains in talks to rejoin the show’s exec producer stable, alongside Simon Fuller, Ken Warwick and Cecile Frot-Coutaz. And then there’s the issue of landing a big name to fill the Cowell void. Despite the Lopez talk on Thursday, Fox, 19 and FremantleMedia are mum on who might ultimately land on the show. DeGeneres, meanwhile, will have her hands full as Warner Bros. positions her daytime yakker as the natural home for “Oprah’s” displaced audience. Earlier this month, Warner Bros. Domestic TV Distribution announced

Julianne Hough Double Dips at The Movies

Active & Retired Military -WIN 4-pak of tickets to Knott’s Soak City

By Tom Roland

Julianne Hough came to national attention as one of the professional dancers on “Dancing With The Stars,” but now she’s all over the entertainment map. Her current single, “Is That So Wrong,” is the first from her sophomore country album, and she’s expected to appear in two different movies in the next eight months — both of them connected to major dates on the calendar. Julianne’s currently involved in pre-production in Los Angeles for the remake of Footloose, which has gone through several different incarnations. Kenny Ortega was originally set to direct the film, though it’s now in the hands of Craig Brewer, who directed Hustle & Flow and Black Snake Moan. But that’s not the only change in the crew. Chace Crawford and Zac Efron were both on board at one point or another to star opposite Julianne in the lead role made famous by Kevin Bacon in 1984. Her costar is now a relative unknown, Kenny Wormald. “It’s crazy,” Julianne says of all the ins and outs of the production. “This has been such an ongoing thing for me. I think everybody’s read so much about it they’re like, ‘Would they just shoot this movie already?’ But to be honest, I could not be more excited now than even before, because there has been so much direction change and growth through the movie. It was gonna be this singing, dancing, big-shebang movie, and now it’s gonna be more like the original and really, really including all the points from the movie. And really drama.” So much drama that Julianne won’t be leaning on either of the talents that have most defined her publicly to date. “It’s a real performance-acting piece for me,” she says. “I don’t sing or dance in it. So it’s gonna be really fun and challenging.” A courthouse scene is currently slated to be filmed Sept. 17, 20 and 21 in Georgia, according to The Covington News. The picture is expected to hit theaters on a quasi-red-letter day: April Fools Day 2011. Meanwhile, Burlesque — which puts Julianne on the big screen with Christina Aguilera and Cher — is on tap to debut in movie houses on Thanksgiving Day. The film is about a cocktail waitress attempting to become a star in Los Angeles, and a trailer for the film was recently released. “What happened to all the great dancers in L.A.?” Cher asks in her role as a club owner in the trailer. Stanley Tucci answers with a reference to the show that launched Julianne: “They’re all dancing with the stars.” – Great American Country TV gmtv.com
