epublicans have tried, on and off, to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for oil drilling since the 1980s. The effort has always engendered intense opposition and always been abandoned. A provision for drilling in ANWR is included in the Republican tax bill almost as an afterthought. Republicans took a constitutional fight against ObamaCare’s individual mandate to the Supreme Court in 2012, and lost. They targeted it in their ObamaCare repeal-andreplace bill early in 2017, and lost. They tried again with a last-ditch “skinny repeal� bill, and lost yet again. Repeal of the individual mandate

is also included in the Republican tax bill. As 2017 ends, President Trump is compiling a solid record of accomplishment. Much of it is unilateral, dependent on extensive executive actions rolling back President Barack Obama’s regulations, impressive judicial appointments and the successful fight against ISIS overseas. The tax bill is the significant legislative achievement that heretofore has been missing. For much of the year, Trump’s presidency had seemed to be sound and fury signifying not much besides the welcome ascension of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. Now it’s sound and fury signifying a discernible shift of American government to the right. The dead are walking among the living on‌ “Roseanne.â€? What, did you think we were talking about “The Walking Dead?â€? When “Roseanneâ€? returns after 20 years off the air, some things will be rewritten. The series finale of the beloved sitcom revealed Dan Conner (John Goodman) did not cheat on Roseanne Conner (Roseanne Barr), he died. The majority of the series was fictionalized by Roseanne. Some characters were gay, others were with different husbands — she had changed it all to serve her needs. Well, that’s about to change in the revival. In the latest commercials for “Roseanne’sâ€? return, Dan is alive and well, watching TV with Becky (Lecy Goranson). He says the Chicago Bulls of the 1990s would beat the current team. “You can’t live in the past, Dan! When things are gone, they’re gone forever,â€? Roseanne says. Wink wink. The other commercials feature Roseanne, Dan and Darlene (Sara Gilbert) in character discussing basketball. Returning cast members also include Laurie Metcalf, Sarah Chalke, Michael Fishman, Johnny Galecki, Estelle Parsons, Sandra Bernhard, James Pickens Jr., Natalie West and Adilah Barnes. But no, there will not be two Beckys with Chalke and Goranson both in the cast. Chalke will play Andrea, a woman who hires Goranson’s Becky to be her surrogate. So just how will Dan come back? That’s being kept under wraps. “I’m not going to talk too specifically about the season. I wouldn’t say that it’s ignoring the events of the finale, but I can say that Dan is definitely alive,â€? ABC boss Channing Dungey said at the 2017 TCA summer press tour. NBC’s “Will & Graceâ€? explained away its finale that featured kids and time jumps by having it be a dream Karen (Megan Mullally) had. The wait to see where the story of Luke Skywalker is going is finally here. The rebellion is attempting to escape the First Order while Rey tries to enlist the help of Skywalker. My 1977 self loves the opening music and yellow scroll preparing for another epic adventure. he Los Angeles Chargers are still alive for a playoff berth with an old foe standing in their way — the Oakland Raiders. Following a 14-7 victory over the New York Jets last Sunday, the easiest path to the post season is a win over the Raiders this Sunday, plus a Ravens win over the Bengals and a Titans loss to the Jaguars. However, the Chargers don’t necessarily need the Ravens to win to earn a playoff berth. If the Bolts beat the Raiders and the Bills and Titans lose to the Miami Dolphins and Jacksonville Jaguars, respectively, then they get in as the sixth seed. If either scenario plays out, the 2017 Chargers will join the 1992 Chargers as the only teams in NFL history to make the playoffs after starting the season 0-4. In addition, both teams will have made the post season under the direction of first-year NFL head coaches — Bobby Ross and Anthony Lynn. 4 +BO

He also passed Mike Tolbert (1,012), Rickey Young (1,030) and Paul Lowe (1,045) for the 11th most receiving yards by a running back in team history.

WEST POINT, N.Y. — Four years after he was hired at Army, coach Jeff Monken has succeeded where so many others had failed over a span of more than two decades, and the achievements are significant. The Black Knights finished 2017 with a 10-3 record, a gutsy 42-35 win over San Diego State in the Armed Forces Bowl on Dec. 23, the perfect cap to a memorable season. Army heads into the offseason with these accomplishments to build on: The Black Knights won the Commander-in-Chief ’s Trophy, emblematic of service academy supremacy, for the first time since 1996; matched the academy record for wins in a season; posted its second straight winning season, which hadn’t been done in 27 years; won its second straight bowl game, which had only been done once before, in the mid-1980s; led the nation in rushing; defeated a Power Five foe (Duke) that also played in the postseason; and, most importantly, beat Navy for the second straight year. Monken has changed the culture in his short tenure. Army now expects to win, and the academy is lobbying to be included in the AP Top 25 when the final poll is released in the new year. “When you have a whole team of guys that have been with the coaching staff, it’s really satisfying to see what they accomplished as a group,� Monken said. “This means a lot to our team.� In this day of pass-happy offenses, Monken has accomplished the unthinkable with his option attack — his Black Knights have been winning regularly by pretty much sticking to the ground and not committing turnovers. Army had only five fumbles in more than 800 plays — 785 rushes, 20 receptions — in 2017, a remarkable statistic, while attempting just 65 passes. managed to repeal ObamaCare, which was always going to be a dicey proposition given the narrow GOP majority in the Senate. The tax cut is big — $1.5 trillion over 10 years, and even more if you account for the budgetary gimmicks — and has changes that conservative economists have sought for decades, particularly the lower corporate rate (from 35 to 21 percent), the move to a territorial tax system (companies would only be taxed on their earnings in the U.S.) and the business expensing (companies can write off the full cost of new buildings and equipment). These reforms are arguably as significant on the corporate side as the Reagan reforms of 1981 were on the individual side. They stand a good chance to be enduring, too — it’s unlikely we’re ever going back up to a 35 percent corporate rate or returning to a worldwide tax system. Trump’s deregulation has been in full gear. The Environmental Protection Agency is unspooling major Obama-era rules, the Waters of the United States and the Clean Power Plan. The FCC reversed net neutrality. The Education Department rescinded an Obama administration Title IX letter that pushed colleges into abandoning due process in sexualassault cases. Obama administration rulings that occasioned fierce debates during his time in office have fallen by the wayside with

barely a whimper. Obama blocked the Keystone pipeline to appease environmentalists who vociferously argued the future of the planet was stake. Trump greenlighted it without a fuss. Obama imposed a contraception mandate feminists portrayed as the only obstacle between women and a “Handmaid’s Tale� future. Trump reversed it — contraception is still widely and easily available in America. Maybe any Republican would’ve done much of what Trump has. But three acts stand out — pulling out of the Paris accords, de-certifying the Iran deal and declaring Jerusalem the capital of Israel. All three demonstrated an imperviousness to polite opinion that is one of Trump’s signature qualities. The president also began the process of ending the Obama amnesty for so-called DREAMers, and has re-established a baseline of immigration enforcement that has had an instant impact on illegal border crossings. None of this is to deny Trump’s failings. Congressional leaders often have to work around his shambolic governing style. This next year could bring a bout of protectionism, and his opposition to entitlement reform during the campaign makes it unlikely Republicans will get a handle on spending. His toxic persona could drive a Democratic wave in the 2018 midterms. Whatever this year brings, though, Republicans aren’t leaving the last one empty-handed.

Here is a closer look at the players Easterling predicts the Chargers will take in the first four rounds including a quote on two of the players from a couple of well-known draft analysts.

1st Round

With the 15th pick in the draft, Easterling has the Chargers selecting Notre Dame offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey. Easterling: “If the Bolts want Philip Rivers to stick around for a few more years and play at a high level, they’ll need to keep him healthy. Last year’s draft netted some stellar interior blockers, but they still need a franchise tackle like McGlinchey, who is as polished and experienced as any in this class.� Easterling has McGlinchey ranked as the second-best tackle in the draft and No. 22 overall on his top 25 prospect big board. SB Nation’s Dan Kadar agrees with Easterling’s projection regarding both the Chargers’ draft position and taking McGlinchery at No. 15. Kadar: “Joseph Barksdale has been a problem at right tackle for the Chargers, and McGlinchey could start his career on that side of the line. Having him along with 2017 picks Dan Feeney and Forrest Lamp on the inside will help the Chargers finally field a solid line.� As of Dec. 15, ESPN Draft Analyst Mel Kiper Jr. has McGlinchey his top ranked offensive tackle and No. 18 overall on his draft big board. ESPN’s other well-known analyst, Todd McShay, had McGlinchey ranked higher at No. 14 amongst his top 32 players. Ourlads’ NFL Scouting Service ranks McGlinchey No. 25 overall on its top-33 prospect list. Ourlads’: “Three-year starter and twotime captain from Philadelphia, PA. The rangy athlete lines up at left tackle in the Notre Dame spread offense. Has spent his entire career under the guidance of former NFL offensive line coach Harry Hiestand. Cousin of Matt Ryan, he has an outstanding combination of height, length, and bulk. Good athletic ability with quickness, balance and explosiveness. Solid pass blocker, has good set quickness and quick feet to reach his set point. Rarely oversets. Above average use of hands and punch timing to win defender’s chest. Has a very good anchor. When he does get beat, he fails to reach his set point and will panic and lunge. Has the lateral quicks to match angles as a zone run blocker and can create vertical or horizontal movement.�

With the 47th pick in the draft, Easterling has the Chargers addressing the secondary by selecting DeShon Elliott, a safety from Texas. Easterling and Kiper Jr.

Continuing to bolster the defense, the Chargers select USC linebacker Cameron Smith with the 79th pick. Kiper ranks Smith the fifth-best inside linebacker, Easterling has Smith as the 8th best linebacker prospect.

With pick No. 111, Easterling has the Chargers addressing the quarterback position by selecting Riley Ferguson out of Memphis. Ferguson is listed No. 10 out of the 15 quarterbacks Easterling ranked in his Dec. 11 article. According to the ESPN Insider rankings, the 6-2, 201 Ferguson is the 8thranked quarterback and number 117 prospect overall. Said ESPN Staff Writer Dan Graziano: “He moved up in the eyes of many with his on-field performance, but Ferguson also comes with concerns about size and durability at the next level.� The Endzone: While Easterling has the Chargers waiting until the fourth round to select a quarterback, McShay has the Bolts selecting Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield in the first round with pick No. 19. McShay: “Orlando Brown is an option at offensive tackle here, but this is a good time for the Chargers to take a successor to 36-year-old Philip Rivers. Los Angeles passed on Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson last draft, but Mayfield is too intriguing to pass on here. Perhaps no prospect has improved his stock more in 2017 than Mayfield, who was my ninth-ranked QB coming into the season, with a midround grade. The Heisman winner is an exceptional leader and could play himself into the first round with a good showing in the College Football Playoff.� Mayfield was the No. 4 ranked quarterback and No. 27 overall on McShay’s top 32 prospects. McShay: “The issue for him is that he doesn’t have the ideal measurables of an NFL starter, and he doesn’t have an elite trait to compensate, like Russell Wilson’s scrambling ability or Drew Brees’ accuracy.� While Kiper also has Mayfield ranked as the No. 4 quarterback, he has the Sooner quarterback higher at No. 13 overall on his big board. Kiper: “I love him on the field — he’s not afraid to take shots downfield, and he has an underrated arm — but his size is going to be a question until he gets in front of scouts at the Senior Bowl [he hasn’t said whether he’ll attend] or the combine.� Mayfield has at least one more opportunity to impress NFL scouts in a College Football Playoff semifinal game when the Sooners face the Georgia Bulldogs in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1. Win that game and Mayfield will lead the Sooners against the Clemson/Alabama winner in the CFP National Championship on Jan. 8 in Atlanta.

This is the story of a man clearly stuck, and when life comes seriously knocking, he must find the joy in life that he has been hiding from. Director Guillermo del Torro has brought a haunting beauty to a story that has moments of brilliant silence and moments of pure love followed by seconds of insanity. All of this wrapped up in the stellar performance of Sally Hawkins and fish man Doug Jones being watched over by Richard Jenkins, Octavia Spencer and the deliciously evil Michael Shannon. 3‘Victoria & Abdul’

I am clearly a fan of period pieces, but this film is just beyond amazing. Judy Dench once again portrays Queen Victoria, who is clearly in her later years and can’t find anything to be excited about. When Abdul comes to court, she begins a friendship that isn’t to the court’s liking or her un-princely-like son. The onscreen chemistry between Dench and Ali Fazal is every bit worth each frame of film. (PG-13 from Focus Features)

2‘Three Billboards’

Frances McDormand gives a performance that will stay with me playing Mildred, a mother who is coming to terms with her daughter’s death. When she doesn’t feel local law enforcement is doing enough, Mildred finds a way to motivate them. Also starring Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell, this is a film that screams must-see! I am cheering for McDormand come Oscar time! (Rated R from Fox Searchlight Pictures) This is where you should be hearing a drum roll, as my No. 1 for 2017 is:

1‘Dunkirk’

Warner Bros.) My yearly bonus of number 11 is “All the Money in the Worldâ€? — Director Ridley Scott takes us to 1973 Rome as J. Paul Getty’s grandson Paul is kidnapped and held for ransom. Mother Gail must go up against kidnappers who don’t believe she isn’t rich and Getty’s refusal to pay anyone any dime of his. Mark Wahlberg is hired to help to find the boy before there is no turning back. Christopher Plummer is eerily creepy, and I loved it. (Rated R from TriStar Pictures) I also had a few guilty pleasure films this year that stand out, including “John Wick 2,â€? but then again, anything with Keanu Reeves busting heads works. There is the very funny “Table 19â€? as Anna Kendrick leads a group of wedding attendees who are stuck in the back of the room with a table of issues. “Kingsman: The Golden Circleâ€? is a return of the well-dressed agents who know you can fight evil and look good doing it. Every list should have a shark film, and “47 Meters Downâ€? is going to be my pick that has bite, head slaps and yet I still love it. Finally, “The Hitman’s Bodyguardâ€? — Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson‌ need I say more? Are there disappointments? Absolutely, and the list feels endless! “King Arthur: Legend of the Swordâ€? gives us a Charlie Hunnam and that’s absolutely it. “Alien: Covenantâ€? is the next installment yet feels like bloody confusion, literally. Of course, there are the ridiculous that don’t need any explanation with “Baywatch,â€? “Transformers: The Last Knightâ€? and “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.â€? Idris Elba had a busy year in 2017, but “The Dark Towerâ€? isn’t high on my list, so I’ll just keep happy thoughts on his other works. Finally, “Justice League.â€? I know I’m going to get grief for it, but there wasn’t anything about the film that makes me want more. There you go, my best and worst of 2017! This has been a year of either hit or miss and not much room for anything else in between. Theatergoers aren’t being fickle in what they are looking for when they spend their hard earn bucks, and they shouldn’t be. In 2018, there are remakes, a return of the wizarding world, more frights with what has become our favorite insidiousness, a group of maze runners finish off their adventures, the final chapter of those shades in the fifties, more from the comic book world, family and animated films and, finally “Solo,â€? “Super Troopers 2â€? and “Deadpool 2â€? might make it all bearable! Thanks for being a part of our 2017 at the theaters, and we look forward to joining you in the seats with a bucket of popcorn in 2018!

Christopher Nolan has brought a film that is not just a story about a moment in history, but a film that is an experience. On the beaches of Dunkirk, Allied soldiers are surrounded by the Germans from land, sea and air in 1940. Nolan gives the audience the perspective from all three angles without much useless dialogue. Instead, he invites viewers into this world of war and all of the emotions that brings. There isn’t a character in Jeri Jacquin is the Movie Maven.
