n the song dubbed “the millennial anthem by the Atlantic, two 20-something friends sing, Wish we could turn back time to the good old days when our mama sang us to sleep but now we’re stressed out. That’s “Stressed Out, the top 10 hit from the duo Twenty One Pilots, a couple of dudes who, in the video for the song, like to ride tricycles, sip from juice pouches and hang out in their boyhood bedrooms. It’s a succinct introduction to the burdens of Generation Why — as in “Why Everything Gotta Be So Hard? Millennials are taking bereavement leave from work to build therapeutic treehouses, they’re bringing Mommy and Daddy to interviews, they’re bringing a snack to (and busting it out in the middle of ) business meetings, they have a constant need to be entertained and all of them think that they’re shiny unicorns on top of a flowery lawn. Almost all of the complaints the olds have about millennials (those born between about 1981 and 1996) have a common denominator: This is the generation that just can’t let go of childhood. Like children, millennials are natural narcissists; research has found they’re a generation characterized by “having an inflated view of oneself with thin skins and a tendency to whine if they aren’t lavishly praised (“Younger employees are often very resistant to anything that doesn’t involve praise and rewards). They have short attention spans and announce the need to let their

Departing the plush, comfy environs of childhood is not easy or fun, which is why it’s best done with one harsh, sudden gesture as cruel as that first kindergarten nolook-back drop-off. At 17 or 18, members of the greatest generation and the baby boomers were handed a union card, or a rifle. Generation X? A latchkey, then a dreary joint-custody plan. All of these generations strove to extricate themselves from their moms and dads — who, being unaware that “parent would ever turn into a verb, were happy to let the little ones go. Baby boomers thought their parents were squares who didn’t understand rock and sex before marriage. Gen Xers, wounded by the baby boomers’ divorces, said (as Douglas Coupland did in his 1991 novel “Generation X) “Eat Your Parents. In the movie “Metropolitan, released a few months before Coupland’s novel in 1990, the film’s protagonist, Tom Townsend, a child of divorce rapidly distancing himself from his early hardships, is walking by an apartment building when his new friend Nick spots a box of abandoned toys sitting woefully on the street and says, “The childhood of our whole generation is represented here, and they’re just throwing it out. Tom realizes to his horror that this isn’t just his generation’s toys — they’re his actual toys, because this is where his estranged father lives, and he carelessly dumped them on the curb. AGENT RECALLS FATEFUL 1963 DAY IN DALLAS Clint Hill offers look at life with ‘Five Presidents’ By Elise Cooper MilitaryPress

F

ive Presidents by Clint Hill with Lisa McCubbin is a non-fiction book written as a page turning historical novel. People might not recognize the author, but the photo of him jumping on the presidential car is engrained in most everyone’s mind. He is the Secret Service agent that heroically leaped onto the Kennedy car in Dallas after the president was shot in 1963. This book illuminates the lives of each leader in an insightful way. Hill has allowed readers to take the memory journey with him as he opens up about the private world he observed. He succeeds in allowing readers to have a rare glimpse into the personalities and characters of the five uniquely different presidents, from Eisenhower to Ford. This book is an incredible inside account. Elise Cooper: Can you give us a short description of your view of each president? Clint Hill: All the presidents were special to me. Each man had his own idiosyncrasies.

Secret Service Agent Clint Hill leaps into the back of the presidential limousine after President John F. Kennedy was shot in Dallas on Nov. 23, 1963.

EISENHOWER: He was very well organized. Because he was a general, he interacted with us much the same way he did with the troops. He did not deal with them on a personal level, which is why he referred to us as “hey agent. But it did not reflect on us, since we all had the utmost respect for him. KENNEDY: Very charismatic and friendly. He treated us like family, form-

ing a close personal relationship. President Kennedy always called us by our first name, while Mrs. Kennedy always referred to us as “Mr. Hill, and had the children do so as well. JOHNSON: He was a professional politician and always active, sometimes a little uncouth and unpredictable. Over the years with him I would see “the Johnson treatment, where he would berate someone because things did not go exactly as he wanted. Yet, even though he rarely apologized, before he left office, he did apologize to the agents. I thought it was very considerate of him. NIXON: He was a split personality between his public and personal side. He demanded loyalty from those around him. Because I was with Kennedy and Johnson, initially he requested I not be put on his detail, but that eventually changed. EC: Since you were the agent assigned to Jackie Kennedy, how would you describe her relationship with you? CH: I always called her Mrs. Kennedy.

She was a very strong person, although in a state of shock after the assassination. We never talked about the event in Dallas. She was extremely intelligent, a dedicated wife and mother. She was very athletic. Her talents included speaking French, Italian and Spanish as well as playing tennis, golf and riding horses. As I say in the book, “Mrs. Kennedy was soft-spoken, refined, and empathetic. The last time we spoke was in 1968 when I saw her in person on the train that was carrying the body of RFK. EC: A similarity with those in the military is that many times you cannot discuss the mission with your families. Explain. CH: I write about that in my book, specifically during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The worst part for all the agents was knowing, in the case of a nuclear attack or a possible missile launch from Cuba, we would have gone with the president and his family to a relocation site while our families would most likely perish. Johnny Depp returns as the Mad Hatter in Disney’s “Alice Through the Looking Glass.

‘Alice Through the Looking Glass’ is a sweet revisit of friendship By Jeri Jacquin MilitaryPress

Wonderland, it is once again going to be an epic battle with friendship and loyalty setting the course! Wasikowska as Alice has truly made this character her own. It is hard to believe that the original “Alice in Wonderland was released six years ago. My how time flies and yet Wasikowska jumps back into character as if no time has passed. For me that is what makes the film so much fun. She is still bold, strong, witty and loyal. Depp as Hatter also seamlessly puts his hat and mad hair back on to give us a peek back into the hat maker’s history. Depp is still lively, funny, quirky and quick at delivering the clever lines that made me laugh — a lot! I adore the colorful insanity Depp brings to this character, and I wouldn’t want anyone else to play Hatter. Carter as Iracebeth certainly does show up with a huge chip on her shoulder. Obviously once you know what that chip is and who placed it, there are a few moments of sympathy for the bulbous headed ginger. Carter embraces the cranky and still makes me laugh. Hathaway as Mirana is elegant and concerned for Hatter but she has a secret of her own! The way in which Hathaway carries herself as the White Queen is really funny. That’s talent when you can make an audience laugh without saying a word. Cohen as Tim is just as nutty as the rest of the characters in Wonderland. He is

In theaters from director James Bobin and Walt Disney Pictures is a story created from the mind of writer Lewis Carroll as we join “Alice Through the Looking Glass. Alice (Mia Wasikowska) is the captain of her father’s ship Wonder and has been away from home for quite some time. When she returns, Alice learns that mother Helen (Lindsay Duncan) has had pressure put upon her by Hamish (Leo Bill). Either the Kingsleigh women must turn over the Wonder or lose their home. Those aren’t her only problems as Absolem (voiced by Alan Rickman) tells Alice that her friends need her in Wonderland! Leaping through a mirror she meets Mirana (Anne Hathaway), who tells her that Hatter Tarrant Hightopp (Johnny Depp) is in trouble. Believing Alice is the only one who can reach him, she visits her Hatter friend. Hiding at home, Hatter believes that his family might still be alive after years of thinking they had died. The only way to learn of their true fate, Alice must seek out Time (Sacha Baron Cohen) and get the object that can transport her back to the last time the Hightopp’s were seen. There is just one big-headed problem — Iracebeth (Helena Bonham Carter) wants it as well. She has a moment in her own past in which one sister changed the fate ALICE, continued on Page 13 of the other. TELESCO TALKS DRAFT, FREE AGENT AQUISITIONS CHARGERS REPORT

by Art Garcia Jr.

ntering his fourth season as general manager for the Chargers, Tom Telesco had a number of needs on both sides of the ball heading into the NFL Draft. Questions along the offensive and defensive line, tight end, linebacker, cornerback and safety were positions the team wanted to upgrade. Recently Telesco sat down with Military Press reporter Art Garcia Jr. to discuss the veteran free agents he signed over the off-season and a quick recap of his rookie draft class. AG: Aside from keeping your own free agents in house, tell me about a few of the veterans you signed off the free agent market? TT: We were trying to address the offense, defense and special teams and try to fill some areas of need before the draft. Chargers General Manager Tom Telesco says the teams ability to pick up free agent Travis Benjamin from Cleveland will give the Bolts more speed at receiver. So we sign Travis Benjamin, which gives us a little bit more speed at receiver and like a dual signing for us in that he can a really nice start to his career in Cleveland presence in the secondary. In college and really helps on special teams too — he was help us in more than just one way. He had as a receiver. He’s a good route runner and in the NFL he’s always been around the he’s not just a speed guy. He runs really ball. He has a lot of career interceptions good routes, he’s tough and he can catch (16), he has a nose for the football, he plays smart and he has good size. the ball — that was important to us. AG: As far as signing Matt Slauson, Both Casey Hayward (Packers) and Brandon Mebane (Packers) were really was it more important for you to get a productive players from the winning veteran center to line up in front of Philip programs they came from. With Casey Rivers as opposed to going with either we were lucky to get him because he is Chris Watt, Trevor Robinson or a rookie a quality corner in this league. You need in Max Tuerk? TT: Not necessarily. You just can’t, to have three starters nowadays because everybody throws the ball so much, so draft wise, get everything you need. So we get him in here and he’s really smart, we were active but it didn’t work out that instinctive, and he has good size — he’s way. Once the draft was over and Matt was released we signed him. Matt’s a durable, just under 6-feet, 194-pounds. Brandon has been a really good nose consistent football player who can play tackle in this league for a long time and center and guard and right now at center he’s going to help out everybody around we have some guys he’ll compete with — him to. At that position, sometimes the job is wide open. AG: You had a lot of injuries your the longer you play it the better you get (because) there’s a lot of technique first year here but the last two years the involved in playing nose tackle. Navy gives star QB Reynolds deferment to play for Ravens Sixth-round pick gets final approval during graduation By Ryan Mink BaltimoreRavens.com

What a day for Keenan Reynolds. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter announced that the Ravens’ sixth-round wide receiver can defer his military service to play in the NFL – during a speech at Reynolds’ Naval Academy graduation. As reported first by The Baltimore Sun, classmates cheered the news as Carter said, “Go get ‘em. “It is a blessing to hear the news from Defense Secretary Carter today. I am truly excited to proudly serve my country while having the ability fulfill my dream of playing for the best organization in the NFL, Reynolds said in a statement. “I would like to thank the Navy for allowing me to represent them while taking advantage of this unique opportunity. I

in long, long time. He is the NCAA’s career leader in touchdowns (88) and also threw 31 passing touchdowns as the leader of Navy’s triple-option offense. But Reynolds has always been about more than just his play on the field. He’s a sterling role model off it as well. A couple weeks ago, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus said he “can’t think of a better ambassador for the United States Navy or the United States military than Keenan Reynolds. “When we have guys coming out of the Naval Academy who go on and play professional sports, or go on and do other things that are high profile, it gives us a chance to show who we are and show the type of people that we attract and recruit, Mabus said. Reynolds is making the transition to wide receiver and special teams returner in Baltimore. He made a good first impression at rookie minicamp but wasn’t present for this week’s Organized Team Activities because he hadn’t yet graduated. Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter announced that Keenan Reynolds can defer his military service to play in the “This is good news, and congratulations NFL during a speech at Reynolds’ Naval Academy graduation. to Keenan on his graduation today, General Manager Ozzie Newsome said in a would also like to thank Mr. Bisciotti and me and giving me this chance. the Ravens organization for believing in Reynolds is Navy’s most prolific player statement.

RENO for kids O

ur grandson, Sam, was turning 10. My wife and I decided that a good way to entice him away from home was to tell him we were going to take him to Circus, Circus in Reno. It worked! We picked him up in Chico and headed north for a scenic three-hour drive going through the infamous Donner Pass. About 30 minutes into the ride, Sam looked out the window and said, “This is just what I pictured. That’s what I call a good start.

What to do

You will spend time (most likely, lots of it) at the Midway of Fun at Circus, Circus. The arcade, a hubbub of sounds and flashing lights, features more than 125 games. Our favorite was Chicken in a Pot. A player catapults a rubber chicken into pots that rotate slowly by. It’s hilarious, and Sam was quite good at it. Starting at 11 a.m., free acts featuring aerialists, jugglers, magicians, clowns and other performers appear on stage. Don’t miss the highly entertaining JR John’s “Doggone Silly show (starring all rescue dogs).

They’ve been performing at Circus, Circus for 8 years, plus airtime on national TV. Circus, Circus’ sister property, Eldorado, was featuring the kid appropriate live musical “Footloose in their showroom. It was first-rate entertainment with an energetic cast. There are no bad seats and an easy walk via an indoor promenade connecting both resorts. Don’t miss the Kimby Howard Hian mie Candy Factory’s tour. It begins with a film explaining the process of growing and harvesting cocoa beans, then a guided walk through the production facilities (6.5 tons are produced daily!), ending at the retail shop for samples. Candies that don’t pass inspection for size or are off-color are sold at a discount and packaged as “Oops Tubes. Logon to www.kimmiecandy.com for information. Grand Sierra Resort’s 50-lane bowling center (to my relief, automatic scoring) is loads of fun. There’s a go-kart track but, unfortunately, Sam wasn’t old enough to drive. While there, we enjoyed the new menu at the Grand Cafe. www.grandsierraresort.com. The Animal Ark Wildlife Sanctuary is

7 harsh realities of life millennials need to understand Millennials. They may not yet be the present, but they’re certainly the future. These young, uninitiated minds will someday soon become our politicians, doctors, scientists, chefs, television producers, fashion designers, manufacturers and, one would hope, the new proponents of liberty. But are they ready for it? Time after time, particularly on college campuses, millennials have proven to be little more than entitled, spoiled, antiintellectual brats who place far too much emphasis on feelings and nowhere near enough emphasis on critical thinking. To the millennial, words are cause for the creation of safe spaces, alternative ideas must be stifled, and anything they perceive to be a microaggression is enough to send them spiraling into a state of mental distress. It’s time millennials understood these seven harsh realities of life so we don’t end up with a generation of gutless adult babies running the show.

Given feelings are entirely subjective in nature, it’s completely unreasonable to demand everyone tip-toe around you to prevent yours from being hurt. The reality is that people will offend you and hurt your feelings, and they won’t stop to mop up your tears because they shouldn’t have to. Learning to accept criticism, alternative viewpoints, and even outright insults will make you happier in the long run than routinely playing the victim card.

NFL returning money from military tributes The NFL announced it is returning nearly $725,000 of taxpayers’ money it had received for sponsoring military tributes before and during its games, league commissioner Roger Goodell revealed. In a letter sent to Arizona Republican Sens. Jeff Flake and John McCain, Goodell said that the NFL will repay the government $723,734 for acts of sponsored patriotism following an audited review of more than 100 marketing agreements from 2012-15. Flake and McCain released a joint oversight report in November claiming the Department of Defense took part in “paid patriotism with teams from the NFL, MLB, NHL and Major League Soccer that totaled $6.8 million, some of which the senators consider legitimate marketing expenses. Among the paid events the report flags as questionable were on-field color guard presentations during the national anthem, enlistment and re-enlistment ceremonies, the unfurling of a giant flag by members of the military, and ceremonial first pitches.

That includes healthcare, guaranteed income and somewhere to live. Just because you’re here and breathing doesn’t mean society owes you anything. Like the billions of people who lived before you, working hard is a better guarantor of wealth and the ability to comfortably take care of yourself than begging society or the government to do it for you. Demanding healthcare be a right, for example, is equivalent to demanding government force the taxpayer to pay for it. While that may seem like a good idea in theory, it only leads to rationing of care when costs become unsustainable, which negatively impacts not just your health, but everyone else’s, too.

6. You DO have the right to live as you please — but not to demand people accept it By contrast, you do have the right to live however you please, so long as it’s within the confines of the law. If you want to cross-dress, smoke marijuana, drink lots of alcohol, have lots of sex and, yes, even go to school for gender studies, then by all means, go for it. Government should not be allowed to legislate people’s behavior as long as it doesn’t infringe upon someone else’s rights, but that doesn’t mean society isn’t allowed to have an opinion. You don’t have the right to demand people keep their opinions about your lifestyle to themselves, especially if you’re open and public about it. I have as much of a right to comment on the way you live your life as you do to actually live it. Your feelings are not a protected right, but my speech is.

7. Home is your only safe space

No matter where you go in life, someone will be there to offend you. Maybe it’s a joke you overheard on vacation, a spat at the office or a difference of opinion with someone in line at the grocery store. Inevitably, someone will offend you and your values. If you cannot handle that without losing control of your emotions and reverting back to your “safe space away from the harmful words of others, then you’re best to just stay put at home. Remember, though: if people in the outside world scare you, people on the internet will downright terrify you. It’s probably best to just accept these harsh realities of life and go out into the world prepared to confront them wherever they may be waiting. XXX NJMJUBSZQSFTT DPN t OFXT!NJMJUBSZQSFTT DPN

COURIC DRAWS FIRE FOR ‘UNDER THE GUN’ EDITING A recent documentary featuring the well-known liberal TV news personality Katie Couric used creative editing to support the documentary’s anti-gun rights message. In the documentary “Under the Gun, Couric is shown interviewing members of the Virginia Citizens Defense League, which supports the Second Amendment’s protection of an individual’s right to keep and bear arms. At one point she asks the members of the group, “If there are no background checks for gun purchasers, how do you prevent felons or terrorists from purchasing a gun? In the edited video, the activists do not respond to her question, but instead sit silent for nine seconds, giving the impression that they have no answer to Couric’s query. After the moment of silence, the documentary proceeds to the next scene. What viewers of the documentary are not told is that the gun rights activists actually had quite a bit to say in answer to her question — about four minutes’ worth of response. In the uncut version of the film, one member of the Virginia Citizens Defense League responded, “Well one, if you’re not in jail, you should still have your basic rights. This was followed by a second

Katie Couric, pictured at the premier of “Under the Gun, is being accused of deceptively editing the responses of gun rights advocates in the documentary.

member, who added, “The fact is we do have statutes, both at the federal and state level. The activists actually gave reasonable, well-thought out responses, including making the point that once a person has served his time in jail or prison, his rights are restored. Another important point made by one of the activists (cut out of the final video) was that what Couric was advocating was “prior restraint, meaning curtailing a per-

son’s constitutionally protected rights because that person might commit a crime. Seriously, is a known terrorist going to walk into a gun store and submit to a background check? The Virginia Citizens Defense League reacted to the deception, calling it “unbelievable and extremely unprofessional. After it became public that the film had been unfairly edited, the documentary’s director, Stephanie Soechtig, attempted

to defend the distorted video. “My intention was to provide a pause for the viewer to have a moment to consider this important question before presenting the facts on Americans’ opinions on background checks. I never intended to make anyone look bad and I apologize if anyone felt that way. She insisted that, “I don’t think I misrepresented gun owners or the people featured in the film. Fox News media analyst Howard Kurtz told his colleague Bill Hemmer, “That kind of distorted editing would be against the rules in any network news division. And that non-apology doesn’t go nearly far enough. Couric reportedly called the episode an “unfortunate mistake. But labeling the editing a “mistake implies that it was not intentional to distort the views of the activists — a contention very difficult to believe. The cable channel that is presenting the documentary, EPIX, offered no apology for the editing, but instead announced, “EPIX stands behind Katie Couric, director Stephanie Soechtig, and creative and editorial judgment. Creative? As in made up? “We encourage people to watch the film and decide for themselves, said Nora Ryan, chief of staff for EPIX. Which film? The edited or the unedited version?

amount of injuries, especially along the offensive line, has been ridiculous. Have you ever seen anything like it in your 22 years in the NFL? TT: Oh probably — you tend to focus on it more when you guys all cover the Chargers every day so it gets focused on a little more but there’s always injuries. We’ve had more at one position than other positions but the results last year on the offensive line, we had a lot of injuries but pass protection wise we were better than people think. Philip was sacked less than half the average across the league so pass protection wise we did a pretty good job with a lot of different players. The run game part of it wasn’t nearly good enough and that’s what we’re trying to focus on this offseason, trying to improve that. 12 June 1, 2016

AG: I want to go through your draft picks and give me a quick synopsis — Joey Bosa? TT: He’s an excellent football player who plays a position we could really use some help at. He can rush the passer and play the run. I’m not worried about where we play him but there will be a transition period for him no doubt. Even though he’s coming from a big school and he’s a good player there’s a transition period in this league — these are men he’s playing against every week but I have no reservations where we play him. AG: And the tight end you took in the second round, Hunter Henry? TT: He’s a true junior because he didn’t redshirt so he was there for three years, but he’s probably more mature beyond his years. He’s very smart, he’s polished, he’s an excellent athlete and was one of the top tight end recruits coming out of high

Alice once again brings a storyline that really is full of lessons about love, family, friendship, loyalty, adventure and forgiveness. Disney has done what they are known for doing — bringing all those qualities into a story that is wrapped up in amazing fun. Gather up the family and make sure there is enough popcorn and drink to go around, visit Wonderland again with Alice and friends in this 113 minute wild ride! In the end — it’s time for a little madness!
