HEY, GOVERNOR BROWN: WE’RE SMART; NOT CHEAP C By Jon Coupal

alifornia’s already overburdened taxpayers are, once again, being blamed for being the problem, now that Gov. Jerry Brown has labeled those who object to his new $5.2 billion gas and car tax as “freeloaders. Taxpayers have become accustomed to being insulted by those who want more of their money. A few years back, Barbara Kerr, then-president of the California Teachers Association, said taxpayers who opposed new taxes were “cheap. This was the same view echoed by high-tech billionaires who financed the successful effort to make it easier to impose new property taxes to pay for school bonds. (It should be noted that billionaires are often insensitive to new taxes that mean little to them, but which can require a significant sacrifice to average California families.) Californians are already struggling with a heavy tax burden. We rank first in state sales tax and marginal

income tax rates and, when adding in the carbon tax, our gas tax is already the highest — and it is about to go much higher. Even with Proposition 13, the per capita property tax burden in the state ranks in the top 20. It should come as no surprise that average folks find these new taxes onerous, taxes that, conservatively, could cost them and their families many hundreds of dollars a year. Adding insult to injury, much of the new revenue will go to accommodate bicycles and for mass transit, perhaps even the governor’s pet bullet train. This, of course, represents the political elites’ refusal to recognize that, for most people, biking to work, even with bike lanes that crowd out motorists, is not practical. They are equally out of touch when supporting spending close to a hundred billion dollars on a bullet train that will help few, if any, get to work or do their shopping. In Sacramento, they have no trouble coming up with

Life as a SEAL

Robert O’neill recounts career By Elise Cooper MilitaryPress

Jack, Henry and Carina try to stay one step ahead of Barbossa, and Barbossa tries to stay two steps ahead of Salazar. As they all get closer to the prize, there are still scores to settle and a few surprises for them all. This is the life of a pirate! Depp as Jack Sparrow puts a period at the end of his time as a pirate. His usual throwing-caution-to-the-wind attitude and not being upset by much, Depp throws out lines and facial reactions that will make the audience laugh. Jack Sparrow is endearing, and even to the very end he seems to be able to come out with what he truly wants. Thwaites as Henry Turner is a young actor that is able to pull off the role of a kid who just wants his dad back. Becoming somewhat of an expert on the legends of the sea, Thwaites is charming, caring and daring all rolled into one. Scodelario as Carina is a smart young woman who is misunderstood by, well, pirates. Looking for the trident is her mission to find her own family. Rush as Barbossa is his usual peglegged self who wants to keep the money rolling in, and going up against Jack is just topping on the cake. Bardem as Salazar is kind of creepy, but then again, he is a tad upset at Jack so we have to let him get out his frustration. Other cast include Kevin McNally as Gibbs, David Wenham as Scarfield, Stephen Graham as Scrum, Adam Brown as Cremble, Orlando Bloom as Will Turner and Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Swann. There is also a cameo appearance that had

One of the biggest crimes perpetrated on Americans was the horrific terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001. It is said, “Real heroes are born in the face of danger. This is no more evident than when Navy SEAL Robert O’Neill took the three shots that killed Osama bin Laden. In the just-published book “The Operator, O’Neill recounts his years as a SEAL Team warrior. Joining the SEALs on a whim after growing up in Butte, Mont., he participated in many high profile missions. These include being a part of the team that rescued the “Lone Survivor Marcus Luttrell, Capt. Richard Phillips from the Somali pirates and searching for the deserter Bowe Bergdahl. The book is a story of his adventures and missions that captured the human side of those in the Special Forces. The bin Laden mission was extremely dangerous because of the different variables: Not knowing the defense systems inside the compound, if there would be suicide bombers or improvised explosive devices inside the house and the fear of being stuck inside Pakistan. Yet, on the helicopter ride he thought of “the single mom who jumped to her death, the realization of the last time I saw my family, and President Bush’s quote, ‘Freedom itself was attacked this morning by a faceless coward, and freedom will be defended.’ It is obvious when a SEAL unit is deployed that individual heroes arise within the team effort. O’Neill explained that Americans should think of the player who made the last shot to win an important game. Although he received much of the acclaim, it was very much a team effort where each player made some impact. In the bin Laden kill, it was his teammate who shot the son Khalid that allowed O’Neill to make the ascent up the stairs to the room where bin Laden was found. The book describes how “The point man lunged at the two women, assum-

ack is back theaters as directors Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg along with Walt Disney Pictures bring “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Henry Turner (Brenton Thwaites) is a young man who wants one thing — to see his father Will Turner permanently returned to dry land. What he needs is Poseidon’s Trident and the map that will lead him there to break the curse holding

his father deep in the ocean. Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario) is a young woman who holds a map, and only she can read it. Basically, it’s because she can read the stars where as most pirates can’t, well, read. Someone who can help them is Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), but he’s not having the best luck with a crew lately. As if that’s not enough, Henry tells Jack that a ghost named Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem) pretty much wants his head on a platter. Unphased by the prospect of losing his head, Jack is more focused on what he’s always focused on — getting his hands on the Pearl! When Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) comes upon the hair-flowing Captain Salazar, a deal is struck to find Jack together.

NBA Finals: Some stats to pique your interest

pick, Dan Feeney, would be drafted higher, tell me about him. TT: Feeney is very similar to Lamp — he’s tough, he’s smart and he’s athletic. He’s played at a high level in the BIG 10 ‌ he’s been one of the best linemen in the BIG 10 in the last couple of years. He’s just a solid, tough and talented football player. AG: And the safety out of Miami, Rayshawn Jenkins? TT: He’s a big safety at 6-feet-2-inches, almost 220-pounds, but pretty balanced between he can come up and tackle in one game (where) he’s physical and aggresTom Telesco sive, but he also has some ball skills in coverage. So we think he’s kind of an accomplished strong safety and free safety but we’ll see what the coaches think and see where his best fit is. AG: And how about the other defensive back, Desmond King out of Iowa? TT: Yeah, he was a corner in college, he’ll play corner for us and maybe some safety — we’ll see kind of how that goes. He was really a productive player in college and in his high school career — he has the state of Michigan record for most interceptions in a career. He goes to Iowa and I don’t know if he has the record for interceptions there or not, but he has a lot of interceptions, so he just as a knack for being around the football. He’s another guy who’s tough, he’s smart and he tackles very well, and he just plays the game with great instincts. AG: And you finally draft an offensive tackle in the sixth round, what caught your eye about Sam Tevi?

The NBA Finals begin as we go to press in Oakland where the Cavaliers take on the Warriors. It’s the third consecutive NBA Finals featuring the two teams (more on that in a moment). Here’s a quick look at some of the interesting facts about the two teams and some of their star players, put together by Opta, the world’s leading sports data provider. The Warriors enter the Finals with a perfect 12-0 record this postseason, the first team to accomplish that feat since the NBA switched to its current playoff format in 2003. The 1988-89 and 2000-01 Lakers entered the NBA Finals undefeated, with 11-0 records. This is the fourth time the Cavaliers have reached the NBA Finals, but all have come in the past decade. They defeated the Warriors last season after losing their first two appearSteph Curry ances (2007 and ’15 NBA Finals). This is the first time in league history the same two teams have faced off in three consecutive NBA Finals. Should Cleveland win, it would be the 12th time in NBA history that a team has won consecutive NBA titles, the first time since the Lakers did it in 2009-10. Cleveland and Golden State have met 19 times since the start of the 2014-15 regular season, including their two NBA Finals matchups. Golden State has won 11 of those 19 games, outscoring LeBron James Cleveland by an average of 103.6-97.3 in those games. The teams split the two regular-season games this season, with the home team winning both times. Kevin Durant (28.4 points per game) and LeBron James (28.3 ppg) rank fourth and fifth, respectively, in NBA playoff history in playoff scoring average. James enters this series with 1,079 points in the Finals, good for seventh on the all-time Finals scoring list. With 239 points in this series, however, he can climb to second place all-time, passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (1,317), Michael Jordan (1,176), Elgin Baylor (1,161),

Art Garcia Jr: What are your thoughts on the draft overall? Tom Telesco: It was productive for us. We ended up having three offensive players with our first three picks, it’s just kind of how things worked out. We think these three guys can come in and really help us with Mike Williams at receiver and the two young guards, but overall we like how it worked out for us.

DOD NAMES CPEN FIRE DEPARTMENT OF THE YEAR Second time for Camp Pendelton

By Gunnery Sgt. Lynn Kinney Marine Corps Installations West - Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton

The Camp Pendleton’s Fire Emergency Services department was recently recognized as 2016’s Department of Defense Fire Department of the Year in a message released by the Assistant Secretary of the Navy, May 17. This is the second time the department was recognized as one of the largest in the DOD and was responsible for more than 3,700 emergency responses, 156 of those being wildland fires, alone. Additionally, the staffs have been working with fire departments in the surrounding communities to maximizing the use of assets and training that lead to the 373 mutual-aid assistance calls supported outside the installation. Chief Thomas C. Thompson, Camp Pendleton’s fire chief, credits the unit’s success to the individual firefighters and the process improvement they have been doing in the past five years. “I am surrounded by very cool operators that get to practice their craft, said

Thompson, who said he is humbled by the recent recognition. “It is a testament to what they do, how they do it and the impact it has to the community. Camp Pendleton’s training ground support various tenants, most notably the I Marine Expeditionary Force, a 28 thousand person Marine Air — Ground Task Force, with ranges and wildland spanning over 125,000 acres. In addition to the department being rec-

ognized, Assistant Chief Jeff Cunliff-Owen was selected as the Fire Officer of the Year for his work as the wildland coordinator. The programs he leads in maintenance and suppression training throughout the year ensure each individual firefighter is getting the education and accreditation necessary to support the installation. “They are the ones that make us look good, said Cunliff-Owen, a 21 year-firefighter, of the firefighters and captains in

the department. “We get it done here because of them. I’m just steering the bus. Both career firemen agree on the importance of these individuals to the team’s success, but more than anything want to do good work. “We can see the impact we make every day, said Thompson. “Not every job is like that, and get satisfaction by helping our community and serving our warfighters and families.

millions of dollars to pay legal bills for illegal immigrants, billions for the train and gold-plated compensation for bureaucrats. But, somehow, we can’t get our roads fixed unless taxpayers come up with additional bribe money in the form of new taxes. But wait, there’s more, as they say on those late-night TV commercials. When gas taxes were last raised in 1990, the Sacramento politicians promised the new revenue would be a panacea for all our transportation woes. But spend it all on fixing roads and bridges they did not. When, after a decade of overspending, the state found itself in the red during a declining economy, gas tax money was pilfered for other Sacramento priorities, priorities that did not include new highways or road maintenance. Even after voters approved two separate ballot measures to force lawmakers to spend the billions of dollars in annual revenue on the roads, the state found a way around these mandates, even going so far as to changing the definition Hospitalman Allan Henson meets his newborn son upon the return of amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8) to Naval Base San Diego from deployment. | Navy Photo of the gas tax so that it would be exempt from the voter-approved requirements. by Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Christopher A. MAKIN ISLAND RETURNS TO SAN DIEGO

DRAFT Continued from Page 4

TT: Tevi was a defensive lineman originally in college then he moved to the offensive line. He can play left tackle, right tackle ‌ he’s big, smart and he has really good feet for a big guy. So we’ll see where he fits but he kind of has maybe a role as a swing tackle where he can play both sides. AG: How about you final pick, the defensive lineman out of Notre Dame? TT: Isaac Rochelle is a really big defensive end who is really good against the run. He’s about 298-pounds, real productive at Notre Dame, he’s blue collar tough and was really productive against the run. We think he can play some defensive end and maybe some defensive tackle for us. The Endzone: Looking to add more talent to the secondary, Telesco signed former Panthers free safety Tre Boston. Starting 10 games last season, Boston had two interceptions and established a career-high 53 tackles in his third year in Carolina. Having visited both the Bills and Steelers in addition to the Chargers, Boston says the comradery he has felt after a few days of practice reinforces his belief that he made the right decision. “It didn’t really matter the money given out to me or really the situation, I knew God was going to put me in the best situation possible,â€? Boston said following his second day of OTAs. “I’ve been here, now day two, and I feel like I’ve been here all offseason with these guys — they’ve really embraced me after two days and it’s been

The Chargers signed Panthers free safety Tre Boston, who says he wants to be a leader on the team’s defense.

unbelievable. So I know God is good and he has a plan for me. Entering his fourth year in the NFL, Boston sees a lot of similarities between this Chargers’ team and the Panthers’ team that were in the Super Bowl just two years ago. “Defensive wise, they are two different schemes, but we have ball players on both teams Boston said. “I see a lot of the Panthers team in this team when it comes to playmakers, guys who are in the brotherhood and guys who care about each other. This team can be very special based just off the guys’ character alone.

“Today we had a good practice, the DBs got a couple of picks ‌ the DBs man, if we keep going, no predictions right now but we’re going to be something nice.â€? When asked what he brings to the Chargers, Boston described himself as a dynamic playmaker who is energetic and flies around at a high tempo — a guy who loves the game with a high passion. A player who can’t wait to get out on the field with his teammates and start making plays. Although the secondary has leaders in Casey Hayward, Jason Verrett and Jahleel Addae, Boston feels he doesn’t necessarily

have to become a leader, but wants to assume a leadership role to help this team get to the top. “For me, I want to become a leader on this defense, he said. “I want to help these guys accomplish what the team wants to accomplish and that is to make the playoffs first and go on from there. But we have to play up to a playoff caliber extent and we have to do that everyday — there are no (taking) days off. “I’ve been to the big show and I’ve lost it, so I know what it takes and I know how to get it done. It’s amazing to be part of this team and I hope I can be a part leading it.
