HOT, NEW VOICE Rapid-fire and unapologetic, Tomi Lahren is making waves

ou may not know political commentator Tomi Lahren by name, but chances are good that you’ve heard one of her “spirited rants at some point. In 2015, she famously ranted about President Obama, terrorism and radical Islam. She’s also gone on record to imply Hillary Clinton is man. Lahren may have grown up sitting in front of HBO and memorizing every word of Dennis Miller’s “I don’t want to get off on a rant-style speeches. After all, her cadence of speaking does sound familiar. Super-conservative Lahren currently hosts her own online commentary show on The Blaze, a news network founded by former Fox News host Glenn Beck. Lahren is famous for her “Final Thoughts segment, where she rants about politics and current affairs. Clips of her rants often clock-up millions of views and go viral. She has previously criticized President Obama’s Middle East policy, describing his approach as a “halfway, half-baked, tiptoe, be-friendly-to-Jihadis mentality. Lahren, who comes from a military family, added: “I care this S.O.B killed four of our United States Marines. And I care that our commander in chief is more concerned with Muslim sensitivity than the honor and sacrifice made by these Marines. She accused Beyonce of “ram-rodding an aggressive agenda down our throats during her Superbowl halftime performance of her new single Formation, which references the Black Lives Matter movement. Now, she’s launched a scathing attack on millenials after the hashtag #MillenialBillofRights began trending on Twitter, in a video that’s received almost 2 million views. Lahren criticized the issues young people were complaining about on social media. TOMI LAHREN, continued on Page 10

eneral Manager Tom Telesco continued to bolster his defense over the weekend by signing former Packers cornerback Casey Howard off the free agent market. With questions surrounding the health of Brandon Flowers and Patrick Robinson testing his value in free agency, Telesco inked the versatile corner to a reported three-year, $15.3 million contract — $6.8 million guaranteed (Ian Rapoport/ NFL Network) Where the 26-year-old Hayward fits into defensive coordinator John Pagano’s defense will likely be decided in training camp. Although he has experience on the outside as a corner as well at the nickel position, one would assume Pagano moves Flowers inside and pegs Hayward the starter opposite Jason Verrett — giving the Chargers one of the best young cornerback duos in the NFL. A second-round pick out of Vanderbilt in 2012, the 5-foot-11-inch, 195-pound Hayward was part of a Packers secondary that finished the season ranked sixth in pass defense last season. Ranked 14thoverall on Pro Football Focus’ top 75 free agent list for 2016, Hayward becomes the

along with veteran running back Donald Brown earlier this month. Also gone from the roster is defensive end Kendall Reyes, who signed a free agent contract with the Washington Redskins. On offense, Telesco made quarterback Philip Rivers a very happy camper by resigning right tackle Joe Barksdale and adding the speedy Travis Benjamin to the receiving corps. Coming off a season where he was voted Chargers’ Lineman-of-the-Year, Barksdale was rewarded with a four-year, $22 million contract. Being the only offensive lineman not to miss a game last season for the bolts, it was vital Telesco kept Barks-

third veteran free agent to join the Chargers defense — Telesco signed defensive tackle Brandon Mebane (Seahawks) and free safety Dwight Lowery (Colts) on the first day of free agency. Aside from the 31-year-old Mebane, it appears the Chargers are going for a youth movement in hopes to turn around a dismal performance in 2015 as the team finished last in the AFC West with a 4-12 record. It was no secret the team wasn’t bringing back All-Pro safety Eric Weddle and veteran receiver Malcom Floyd was retiring, however, Telesco released inside linebackers Donald Butler and Kavell Conner

dale in-house not only for continuity purposes up front, but his ability to step in and play left tackle if need be. The signing of Benjamin not only brings over-the-top speed to the position, but his talent as a punt returner gives the Chargers a much-needed threat on special teams the team has been lacking since they let Darren Sproles walk out the door following the 2010 season. Entering his fifth year out of the University of Miami, the 5-foot-10-inch, 175-pound Benjamin has averaged 12.6 yards per punt return over his career and has three returns for touchdowns. And despite the quarterback woes in Cleveland, the former Hurricane was on the radar of a few teams following a 2015 breakout season which saw him catch 68 passes for 966 yards and five touchdowns. The Endzone: In his four years with the Packers, Hayward has totaled 168 tackles, 35 passes defended, nine interceptions and one touchdown. He has led the team in interceptions in two of his four seasons with the Packers and in 2012, Hayward led all NFL rookies with six interceptions and 11 passes defended. In 2014 he was tied for seventh in the NFL with five total takeaways (three interceptions and two fumble recoveries), and started a careerhigh 11 games last season with 65 tackles and seven passes defended. Aside from the aforementioned free agent signings, Telesco also re-signed tight end Antonio Gates, quarterback Kellen Clemons, safety Jahleel Addae, receiver Dontrelle Inman, guard-tackle Kenny Wiggins and defensive tackle Damion Square. Northern Iowa beat Wichita State twice this season. Both mid-majors have Cinderella potential.

Seven bold predictions for the NCAA tournament Just about every college basketball coach will tell you winning in the NCAA tournament is heavily based on what type of matchup their team draws. Now that Selection Sunday has delivered yet another riveting unveiling of 68 teams, the Cinderellas, Final Four sleepers and title contenders can be sorted out based on the 2016 tourney’s matchups. While March is always wild and unpredictable, this season’s madness started way earlier with a record number of top teams falling like flies. With that, why think the tournament would be normal madness? Here’s a look at seven predictions that will shake up the bracket.

Three of four No. 12 seeds pull off upsets The No. 12 seed>No. 5 seed upset is the most probable and popular pick on a yearly basis so perhaps this isn’t that bold. However, no matter how much it’s picked or forecasted, the shock factor always arrives. In the West Region, Ivy League champion Yale takes on Baylor. The Bears will be ready after getting upset by Georgia State in the opening round last year. No matter. Yale hasn’t been in the Big Dance since 1962 and has Cinderella written all over it behind versatile forward Justin Sears. In the East, Southern champ Chattanooga squares off against Big Ten regularseason champion Indiana. The Hoosiers have come on strong late in the season behind lightning quick point guard Yogi Ferrell. Yet the Mocs have what it takes to beat Indiana, which just lost to bubble team Michigan in the Big Ten tourney. This, unfortunately, would ruin a potential Indiana-Kentucky meeting in the round of 32. Sorry. And in the Midwest Region, Little Rock-Arkansas has the Cinderella ingredients to stun another Big Ten team in Purdue. The Boilermakers looked impressive in the Big Ten final against Michigan State, but they’ve been known to lack an edge throughout the season. The Trojans, who beat Tulsa and San Diego State this season, certainly won’t be lacking any type of fire as a mid-major with a chip on its shoulder.

No Big 12 team reaches Final Four In a season in which the Big 12 has been the clear-cut toughest conference in the country and Kansas has emerged as the top overall seed in the whole tournament, it would almost be bizarre to not see a team from the Big 12 in Houston come April. But it’s not as though the Jayhawks, No. 2 seed Oklahoma, No. 3 seed West Virginia, No. 4 seed Iowa State, No. 5 seed Baylor, No. 6 seed Texas and No. 8 seed Texas Tech have an easy path. Bill Self ’s team could run into a surging UConn team as early as the first weekend in the South Region. And while Buddy Hield’s Sooners do have the moxie to get past top-seeded Oregon or anyone in the West, OU has proven to be extremely vulnerable when it’s not shoot- No. 11 seeds Wichita State, Northern ing the ball well from beyond the arc. The Iowa and Gonzaga reach the Sweet 16 The selection committee sent a not-soconference didn’t fare too well in last year’s tournament, either, as both Iowa State and nice message to mid-major bubble teams Baylor got stunned in the opening round NCAA, continued on Page X by mid-major Cinderellas. FORMER CIA DIRECTOR DEFENDS CALL MONITORING In ‘Playing to the Edge,’ Hayden says CIA was betrayed By Elise Cooper MilitaryPress

“Playing to the Edge, written by former CIA and NSA Director Michael Hayden, offers insight into many of the programs under his responsibility. He discusses NSA’s data collection, the enhanced interrogation program, relations with Congress and the media. It also delves into the political, legal, defense, technical and budget restrictions he faced during his tenure as a director of the NSA and CIA Hayden said he wrote the book “to pull back the veil to give Americans a better understanding of what the intelligence community does for American security. Despite its great importance, it is highly misunderstood. The book highlights NSA data collection, and Hayden makes a very good point, that much of the fear is rooted in misunderstanding. He clearly explains how Stellarwind, the Metadata program, became an enormously useful way to track who foreign terrorists are talking to in the United States without sacrificing any significant measure of privacy. Readers will understand that those in the intelligence community and the Bush Administration were not focused on world domination, and had no interest in listening to a person’s phone calls, unless they were speaking with a terrorist. It becomes evident after reading the book and talking with General Hayden that intelligence operates in a universal gray area, where there is a need to balance freedom and security. “We put together with Stellarwind a

massive file of the history of American phone calls. But the files were accessed only with strict and limited circumstances, Hayden said. “For example, if you pick up a phone never seen before, associated with terrorism, you can ask the database if the phone’s history has ever been in contact with anyone in the U.S. The database is accessed by an intelligence professional that thinks they have a reasonable suspicion that a particular phone number is connected with terrorism. “In order for John Doe to be triggered he would have to be in touch with either, directly or indirectly, a phone number overseas that is believed to be terrorist related. Hayden basically agrees with John

Congress and this administration have shown a betrayal of trust where the CIA is concerned; yet, has done nothing regarding Hillary Clinton’s emails. Hayden noted, “I have not seen the emails. But, once you set up a private server it can’t go to a happy place because it is unprotected. As a former director of the NSA, if a potential adversary of the U.S. had done this I would have moved heaven and earth to see the information. “It was imprudent and I cannot understand why the folks at the State Department did not say to her she could not do it. The explanation she gives is incoherent for anyone who was in government. The book further explains the Hayden Doctrine. “Balancing openness with the need for secrecy is a condition to be managed, not a problem to be solved, Hayden said. “We should lean forward as far as possible in telling our story. If we do not do this other people will, without being as accurate or as favorable. We need to communicate to the broader society what we do and the reasons behind it. Because too much information is classified this breeds carelessness in protecting what is really secret. But we have to be open internally as well. I created a program, ‘Email The Director.’ Something seemed to be working because by 2008 we were only in the press because of Congress. In “Playing to the Edge Michael Hayden shows how important intelligence is to America’s security. People might not always agree with him, but one thing is for certain he believes in the Constitution, is a patriot, and his only agenda is to protect his fellow citizens. Americans should thank him for his service and consider him a true American hero who stepped up to the plate to defend the homeland. XXX NJMJUBSZQSFTT DPN t FEJUPSTEFTL!NJMJUBSZQSFTT DPN

Brennan, the current CIA director, who said in an interview, “individuals are liberally giving up their privacy, you know, sometimes wittingly and sometimes unwittingly as they give information to companies or to sales reps. Or they go out on Facebook or the various social media. They don’t realize though that they are then making themselves vulnerable to exploitation. But more importantly what Hayden wants to focus upon is that America should be “capturing terrorists and detaining them for interrogation. “How we get to that point is to elect another president, he said. “This president grabs someone only if he can put them in an Article III court, instead of treating them as enemy combatants.

FEY SHINES IN ‘WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT’ By Jeri Jacquin MilitaryPress

In theaters from directors Glenn Ficarra, John Requa and Paramount Pictures comes a story based on the book by Kim Baker with “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. Kim Baker (Tina Fey) works for a news service sitting behind a desk. When the opportunity comes to shake up her life, she is assigned to Kabul, Afghanistan to cover stories about stories of interest. Immediately after landing, Kim begins to doubt that she can fit in until she is introduced to Tanya Vanderpoel (Margot Robbie) who takes Kim under her wing and introduces her to her new environment. She is assigned driver Fahim (Christopher Abbott) who has connections and introduces Kim to Ali Massoud Sadiq (Alfred Molina) who immediately shows signs of having a crush on her. With the help of the military including General Hollanek (Billy Bob Thornton), Kim embeds and takes the initiative to find the stories in the middle of the war. When Kim discovers her boyfriend is cheating, she decides it is time to let loose and that’s when an unlikely relationship

Ships that aided Japan contaminated with radiation CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — Sixteen U.S. ships that participated in relief efforts after Japan’s nuclear disaster five years ago remain contaminated with low levels of radiation from the crippled Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant, top Navy officials say. In all, 25 ships took part in Operation Tomadachi, the name given for the U.S. humanitarian aid operations after the magnitude-9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami on March 11, 2011. The tsunami, whose waves reached runup heights of 130 feet, crippled the Fukushima plant, causing a nuclear meltdown. In the years since the crisis, the ships have undergone cleanup efforts, the Navy said, and 13 Navy and three Military Sealift Command vessels still have some signs of contamination, mostly to ventilation systems, main engines and generators. “The low levels of radioactivity that re-

6 March 15, 2016

main are in normally inaccessible areas that are controlled in accordance with stringent procedures, the Navy said in an email. “Work in these areas occurs mainly during major maintenance availabilities and requires workers to follow strict safety procedures. All normally accessible spaces and equipment aboard the ships have been surveyed and decontaminated, Vice Adm. William Hilarides, commander of Naval Sea Systems Command, said. “The radioactive contamination found on the ships involved in Operation Tomodachi is at such low levels that it does not pose a health concern to the crews, their families, or maintenance personnel, Hilarides said. The largest U.S. ship to take part in the relief operation was the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Ronald Reagan, which normally carries a crew of more than 5,000 sailors. In 2014, three years after the disaster, the

Reagan’s ventilation system was contaminated with 0.01 millirems of radiation per hour, according to the Navy. Nuclear Regulatory Commission guidelines advise no more than 2 millirems of radiation in one hour in any unrestricted area, and 100 millirems total in a calendar year from external and internal sources in unrestricted and controlled areas, so full-time exposure on the Reagan would be below that.

Plume of radiation

In the days after the tsunami hit the Fukushima complex, the plant suffered multiple explosions and reactors began to melt down. Officials from the NRC told Congress that extremely high levels of radiation were being emitted from the impaired plant. Japanese nuclear experts said winds forced a radioactive plume out to sea, and efforts to keep fuel rods cool using seawater caused tons of radiated water to be dumped into the ocean. The Reagan was dispatched to take part in relief efforts, arriving the next day. Navy officials say the Nimitz-class nuclear-powered supercarrier stayed at least 100 nautical miles away from the damaged plant, but many sailors have disputed the Navy’s accounting, saying they were so close that they could see the plant. The Navy has acknowledged that the Reagan passed through a plume of radiation. Navy images showed sailors with their faces covered, scrubbing the deck of the Reagan with soap and water as a precautionary measure afterward. The Reagan and sailors stayed off the coast of Japan for several weeks to aid their Japa-

The two top executives of Wounded Warrior Project were fired March 10 by the board of directors. Americans donate hundreds of millions of dollars each year to the charity, expecting their money will help some of the 52,000 wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan. But CBS News found Wounded Warrior Project spends 40 to 50 percent on overhead, including extravagant parties. Other veterans charities have overhead costs of 10 to 15 percent. Wounded Warrior Project’s Chief Executive Officer, Steven Nardizzi, and Chief Operating Officer, Al Giordano, were fired after a meeting in New York. By appealing to America’s generosity, Wounded Warrior Project raised more than a billion dollars in donations since 2003 — $300 million in 2014 alone. But while the money was pouring in, it was also flowing out on lavish employee conferences — $26 million in 2014. “Let’s get a Mexican mariachi band in there, let’s get maracas made with the WWP logo put them on every staff member’s desk. Lets get it catered, have a big old party, said Eric Millette, a retired army staff sergeant. He took a job with Wounded Warrior as a motivational speaker, but after two years he quit. “I’ll be damned if you’re gonna take hard-working Americans’ money and drink it and waste it, instead of helping those brave men and women who gave you the freedom to walk the face of this earth. More than 40 former employees said spending by the charity was out of control. Two former employees were so fearful of retaliation they asked remain anonymous. “It was extremely extravagant. Dinners and alcohol and, just total excess, one said. “I mean, it’s what the military calls fraud waste and abuse. Former employees also said the excessive spending began when Nardizzi took over as CEO in 2009. They point to the 2014 annual meeting at a luxury resort in Colorado Springs as typical of his style. “He rappelled down the side of a building. He’s come in on a Segway. He’s come in on a horse. Nardizzi has defended the charity’s spending. “If your only fixation is spending the most on programs, that’s feeling good, but not necessarily doing good, he said. But many major donors were outraged, including Fred and Dianne Kane. They raised $325,000 with golf tournaments, and are not pleased with allega-

“Millennial Bill of Rights is trending — gotta love Twitter — so what rights do we as young people demand? she asked. “The right to complain when our parents make us spend the Christmas money they gave us. The right to blame the free market and the bank for making us take on student loan debt. Or the right to whine all day on social media that we aren’t rich and famous? “Meanwhile, sitting on Instagram, instead of being productive? Is that really the so-called Bill of Rights we petitioned for? We are better than this. Lahren says millenials should have a right to be “ticked off, but not for the reasons she’s read people complaining about. “We should be ticked off that unlike like our grandparents, our parents are babying us, she said. “Welcome to 2016 where tough love has become harassment and losing has become participation, where teachers are more worried about what red pens do to self esteem than what mediocre effort does to the future. “We don’t have ‘failure to launch’ syndrome because we’re lazy, we fail to launch because with no foot in the butt, the butt stays on the couch. Lahren loves to shock people about her career. Since she’s only 23-years-old, they’re not expecting to hear she’s the host of her own conservative political talk show. Lahren was raised in Rapid City, S.D., by hard-working parents who taught her strong work ethics and the importance of family and community. She credits them with the reason she has been able to achieve so much already. “They’ve believed in me and they’ve always been supportive. Family dinners were the highlight of her childhood evenings. Nightly discussions centered around topics featured on “ABC Nightly News. “I cannot tell you how many times I would pause the show to give my two cents. said Lahren, recalling those cherished memories. “You name it, we talked about it. She has always had a passion for politics and was student body president and

I loved the camera. I loved talking to my peers. Even if it was just reading what was for lunch. It was something. Lahren didn’t want to leave Rapid City but to go into political commentary she would have to expand her horizons. She chose University of Nevada, Las Vegas and became a panelist and then host on the UNLV political roundtable show called “The Scramble. On the show, students discuss the issues of the day. “‘The Scramble’ cemented my passion for political commentary. I was able to facilitate an honest and open dialogue. It allowed me to gain the experience I would

Who lost Iraq? The American people By Dr. Earl Tilford The Center for Vision & Values

M

y parents originally named me “Victory Japan because my slightly premature birth resulted from mom and dad dancing in the streets of Saint Petersburg, Fla. on the night of Aug. 16, 1945 — the day after the United States won its last war. Seventy years is a lifetime by the Biblical standard of our allotted three score and 10 years. Go back to 1945 and subtract 70 and you are two years away from the end of Reconstruction. In my lifetime Republicans blamed Democrats for “losing China to communists and not winning in Korea while Democrats blamed Republicans for losing Vietnam and want to blame the GOP for losing Iraq. In this heated and increasingly bizarre presidential campaign season, with the rise of ISIS in Iraq and Syria, “Who lost Iraq? has become a key issue. Predictably, Democrats blame former President George W. Bush while Republicans blame current President Barack Obama. It was Bush who on Dec. 14, 2008, as he was about to leave office, signed a Status of Forces Agreement that stated, “All the United States Forces shall be withdrawn from all Iraqi territory no later than December 31, 2011. While former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in her book “No Higher Honor, claims there was an understanding with then Iraqi President Nouri Maliki that a residual force might remain, it seems Maliki later “reneged. Bush left it to Obama to negotiate a new understanding. Leon Panetta, one of Obama’s secretaries of defense, claims in his book “Worthy Fights that Maliki insisted a new agreement providing immunity from Iraqi prosecution of U.S. forces would never be

“

accepted by the Iraqi parliament. Perhaps Maliki preferred chaos and Iranian domination to a tough political fight in his own parliament. Panetta wrote, “To my frustration the White House coordinated the negotiations but never really led them. President Obama satisfied the documentation, blamed Bush, and withdrew the troops. It’s a moot point since the Obama administration is losing the entire Middle East and Afghanistan to an Iranian-Russian “axis. Meanwhile, the United States, a nation of 330 million people, has politically devolved into a democratic mob choosing between a bombastic business

ety. During the last quarter century, many Christians and Jews in Europe and North America abandoned their religious faith for a postmodern philosophy spawned by leftist academic, religious, and political elites who reject notions of definitive truth and absolutes like good and evil. Believing in little to nothing invites those who fervently embrace a cause, no matter how ill-informed or intellectually bankrupt, to attack and destroy us. When President Obama, former President Bill Clinton, presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders refuse to recognize the evil inherent in Salafist Islam they empower Al-Qaeda and ISIS. We, as a people, have weakened our own academic and religious institutions and by extension our body politic by not acknowledging evil for what it is. Consequently, we are confused to the point that we cannot or will not act to destroy the very real threats we face. The recent political debates — regardless of parties — are illustrative. Republicans insult and snipe at each other over ridiculous issues like who can or cannot speak Spanish, while Democrats spew bilge about America being a society of racists and homophobic bigots unwelcoming to immigrants and refugees. When political debate devolves to candidates campaigning for the American presidency by performing skits on “Saturday Night Live, it’s clear we are a confused people who lost not only Iraq but also are about to lose ourselves to a postmodern world of our own making.

We, as a people, have weakened our own academic and religious institutions... by not acknowledging evil for what it is.

mogul, a former secretary of state who may be indicted or inaugurated, and a self-declared socialist who honeymooned in the USSR. The question shouldn’t be “Who lost Iraq? It should be “Who is losing the Middle East and Afghanistan? Beyond that, the larger questions are “Who are we and what have we become as a people and a nation? After all, we elected Barack Obama — twice. The unmitigated evil ISIS does is meant to intimidate its co-religionists, terrify Christians and Jews, and enslave entire nations. It also issues from the mainstream of Saudi Wahhabism, a form of Islam that originated in 18th century Arabia. Millions adhere to it and mean to foist it on the Judeo-Christian West from Eastern and Western Europe and on to North and South America. It is partially our fault that a ridiculous confluence of political progressivism and Eastern religious fundamentalism threatens the existence of Western soci-

The partnership includes corporations, small businesses and other organizations that post job openings on the Military Spouse Employment Partnership Career Portal, mentor military spouses and other employers, and provide employment data on military spouses hired, officials said.

Gerard Butler agrees to attend Marine Corps ball with female Marine Last week Gerard Butler, star of several Hollywood blockbuster movies, took a tour of Camp Pendleton. Butler was on hand to give Marines a sneak peek of his new movie, “London has Fallen. Base Marines showed him their Martial Arts program, and requested he show them his moves from his hit movie, “300. Butler joined more Marines at the base theater, anxious for his arrival. “I never forget these moments, Butler said. “That’s why we come here. One female Marine was able to ask Butler a very important question: Would he accompany her to the Marine Corps ball? On camera, Butler agreed, and will be back to Camp Pendleton in the fall for the annual event.

Pentagon report says spy planes have flown missions over U.S. land

The Pentagon has deployed drones to spy over U.S. territory for non-military missions over the past decade, but the flights have been rare and lawful, according to a new report. The report by a Pentagon inspector general, made public under a Freedom of Information Act request, said spy drones on non-military missions have occurred fewer than 20 times between 2006 and 2015 and always in compliance with existing law. The Pentagon has publicly posted at least a partial list of the drone missions that have flown in non-military airspace over the United States and explains the Dr. Earl Tilford is a military historian and fellow use of the aircraft. with their selections that essentially said their criteria outside of a conference tournament title wasn’t enough to get into the NCAAs. That left Monmouth, St. Mary’s, Valparaiso and San Diego State outside of the field. Wichita State was the only mid-major to notch an at-large bid, while Northern Iowa captured the Missouri Valley’s auto bid. And Gonzaga likely would have missed the cut had it not ousted St. Mary’s in the West Coast tournament final. All three of these No. 11 seeds have open paths to reach the Sweet 16. The Shockers have a very winnable play-in game against Vanderbilt. Then they’d face Arizona and likely Miami. Two tough teams, but two winnable games when you have perhaps the best backcourt in the country in Fred VanVleet and Ron Baker. Northern Iowa plays Texas in the opening round and then would likely need to beat Texas A&M to reach the second weekend. Considering how hot the Panthers are — they’ve won 12 of 13 — it’s surely possible. As for Gonzaga, this was a preseason Final Four team for some experts with Kyle Wiltjer and Domantas Sabonis in the frontcourt. The ‘Zags will get an opportunity to make up for an underachieving season against a red-hot Seton Hall team and then likely Utah in the round of 32 if they won. Three times won’t be a charm for Virginia against Michigan State These two teams have met each other in the past two NCAA tournaments, first in the Sweet 16 in 2014 and last year in the round of 32. Both times, Virginia was a higher seed projected to win but ultimately fell to Michigan State. The committee surely wanted another rematch here, with both teams in the Midwest. The Cavaliers will have the higher seed again but it’s not completely safe to say 14 March 15, 2016

they’re the favorite because the Spartans arguably deserved a No. 1 seed themselves after winning the Big Ten tournament, whereas UVa finished second to North Carolina in both the ACC regular season and tournament. Regardless, it’s difficult to see these teams not meeting each other in the Elite Eight based on how great they’ve been playing. And it’s also difficult to imagine Tony Bennett’s team getting the best of Tom Izzo’s when the Spartans are a title favorite to many and have National Player of the Year Denzel Valentine on their roster. Only one No. 1 seed reaches the Elite Eight Yes, that’s right. Kansas, North Carolina, Virginia and Oregon all could fall before the Elite Eight, which means that a much higher seed will have to knock them off. TWENTYNINE PALMS — Environmentalists are legally challenging plans to relocate 1,100 federally protected desert tortoises to accommodate expansion of U.S. Marine Corps activities. The relocation at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, if carried out, would be the largest ever attempted, said Ileene Anderson, a senior scientist with the Center for Biological Diversity, which filed notice Tuesday about its challenge. “The proposed translocation is a disaster for the already at-risk desert tortoises in the Mojave Desert,â€? Anderson said. This population has already declined by 50 percent in the past 10 years, Anderson said. “If the past is any guide, up to half of the tortoises won’t survive this relocation, pushing these tortoises in the west Mojave mittee for their mediocre rĂŠsumĂŠ with closer to extinction,â€? nese allies. The multibillion-dollar ship, projected to last at least 50 years after its launch in 2001, then was taken offline for more than a year for “deep maintenance and modernization at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility in Bremerton, Washington, according to Navy officials. “Procedures were in place to survey, control and remove any low-level residual contamination, the Navy said. “Personnel working on potentially contaminated systems were monitored with sensitive dosimeters, and no abnormal radiation exposures were identified. Upgrades and cleaning also took place at the ship’s next stop in San Diego. Sailors who performed the work said it entailed entering spaces deep within the ship, testing for high levels of radiation, and if it was found, sanding, priming and painting the areas. They say there were given little to no protective gear, a claim that the Navy denies. Of the 1,360 individuals aboard the Reagan who were monitored by the Navy following the incident, more than 96 percent were found not to have detectable internal contamination, the Navy said. The highest measured dose was less than 10 percent of the average annual exposure to someone living in the United States.

tary’s response and safeguards. Any illnesses that sailors have developed since the operation are not a result of the relief campaign, he said. “There is no objective evidence that the sailors ... experienced radiation exposures that would result in an increase in the expected number of radiogenic diseases over time, Woodson wrote. “The estimated radiation doses for all individuals in the Operation Tomodachi registry, including sailors on the U.S.S. Ronald Reagan, were very small and well below levels associated with adverse medical conditions. Furthermore, Woodson said, more sailors would have been sick if the levels were high enough to cause the illnesses cited. There were upward of 5,000 sailors aboard the Reagan at the time of the operation. He also said symptoms developed too early to be associated with the operation. But Shinzo Kimura — a professor at Dokkyo Medical University in Japan who has studied radiation exposure from Hiroshima and Nagasaki to Chernobyl and, now, Fukushima — said it wasn’t too early for sailors to show symptoms of exposure-related conditions. Doctors have seen conditions in children living near the plant that surfaced earlier than would normally be expected. Kimura, hired by the Nihonmatsu city government for his expertise in the field, was the first scientist on the ground taking readings in the wake of the Fukushima disaster. He said each person and the way their body is affected by radiation is different. While unable to definitively say if the sailors were sickened by the radiation, Kimura reasoned that the levels aboard the Reagan were high enough to cause illnesses. Otherwise, he said, why go through the bother of repeated cleanings to lower radiation levels? “It is impossible to speculate or calculate how much the doses were before the two decontamination works, he said. “The U.S. military is very good at riskmanagement. Considering that, it is assumed that decontaminations were conducted twice because the levels were not favorable.

Veterans United Home Loans of San Diego It is my passion to help my brothers and sisters of the service become a part of an even smaller percentage of Americans – Veteran homeowners.

Here's what a new home buyer had to say about Caleb's service! If you are looking to finance or refinance a home using a VA home loan, Veterans United is the place to go! They made it really easy for my wife and me to refinance our home at a lower interest rate. The loan officer we worked with, Caleb, took the time to answer all of our questions and made sure we really understood the process. They certainly are attuned to the needs of their clients and did a great job in taking care of us. I'd recommend them to anyone! - Andrew S.
