American Patriot He gave his tomorrows so we could have today. He fought to protect freedom to preserve the American Way. Let us not forget him, or the sacrifice he made, as he rests under an old tree in the coolness of the shade. He went where they sent him with his friends into the fray. Into the thick of battle he stood for us in harms way. I never got to know him, so young he was taken away. Perhaps I will get to meet him when my eyes are closed some day. I know I will never forget him, or the sacrifice he made, as rests under that old tree in the coolness of the shade. — Thomas Li Brizzi
remember when...
MEMORIAL DAY It’s not about the barbecue
T
he fact is that most people will not attend Memorial Day events this holiday weekend. Indeed, most Americans have little knowledge of, or connection to the Memorial Day events. This is the first long weekend of the summer and most will be thinking of anything but Memorial Day. It is a reality that those who have served this country in uniform, and their families, are less that 1 percent of the American population. Most people today, even though we have been at war for the last 15 years, do not even know anyone who is serving, or who has served in our military. Most would not be able to tell you why we celebrate Memorial Day. This last weekend of May, our cities will be decorated in bunting and the American flag will be flying along downtown streets all across America. There will be memorial ceremonies held at National Cemeteries, and small local cemeteries, where veterans are buried beneath broad, manicured grounds marked with long, regimented rows of white marker stones. Some people will gather in those places of rest around the country to remember their own family members who died in service. Others will come to honor all who have served the nation in times of war and times of peace. The flag will be raised solemnly as the National Anthem is played or sung. The plangent, melancholy notes of “Taps will waft over the silent grounds. The old veterans in attendance will be recog-
nized by their baseball hats emblazoned with military branch insignias, or with the names of the wars they were in. They will stand at awkward attention and salute at the raising of the flag, or during the playing of “Taps. Their eyes and cheeks may be moist with tears, because they will be remembering fallen brothers and sisters in ways most cannot imagine. Why, then, should we all remember? It is not wars that we are remembering with this national holiday. Rather, we are remembering those who served and those who gave their last full measure of devotion in order to insure that the freedoms that this country offers to all would be able to be passed on to the next generations. We remember them because they tell us something of our human dignity. They remind us of the cost of freedom and of the quality of our character as a nation. We do not gather on this holiday to glorify wars. Rather, we are challenged to remember that when war comes unbidden to us, there are those who are willing to give their all to defend this nation. Deep down we want to remember in the hope that we will find ways to prevent wars and never again have to fight them again. There is, among veterans, no more hoped for desire than the desire that their own sons and daughters will never have to suffer the terrors of war, or the effects of war. All veterans hope and pray that their war will be the last war.

‘X-MEN: APOCALYPSE PUSHES ITS STORY LINE By Jeri Jacquin MilitaryPress

his Friday in theaters from director Bryan Singer and Twentieth Century Fox is the unraveling of “X-Men: Apocalypse. Apocalypse, or En Sabah Nur (Oscar Isaac), is the world’s first mutant and after being betrayed by his own people, he is left buried under a pyramid of rubble. When Moira Mactaggert (Rose Byrne) finds that the mutant has been discovered, she isn’t the only one who knows something is wrong. Professor Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) also knows something is wrong and looks for Moira to find answers when an earthquake shakes the planet. Raven/Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) rescues Kurt/Nightcrawler (Kodi SmitMcPhee), and in the process knows there is something wrong with Eric/ Magneto (Michael Fassbender). As Apocalypse gets his era bearings, he begins to find other mutants that will help him. First there is Ororo/Storm (Alexandra Shipp), then Psylocke (Olivia Munn) and finally Angel (Ben Hardy). Knowing that Magneto is angry once again, he uses that to his advantage. Raven returns to the Gifted School and sees Hank/Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) and Scott/Cyclops
The CGI-filled “X-Men: Apocalypse comes in at a whopping 143 mintues — much longer than the film needed to be.
(Tye Sheridan). When Apocalypse enters the school, it is his intention to take Charles but not before attempting to demolish the school. Peter/Quicksilver (Evan Peters) rescues them all but not before being taken by the military.

That won’t stop anything as they all end up back in Cairo, Egypt to put a stop to Apocalypse’ plan for world destruction — but they will need each other to save not only the world but one another. McAvoy as Charles has this role down pat. Although I didn’t realize there was a storyline about why Charles would later become bald, I guess I should be thrilled to know. McAvoy is just endearing, and I’m going to hold onto that. There are a few moments where I wondered why one minute his character is in an electric chair and the next he’s in a hand pushed chair. Fassbender as Eric/Magneto gets a chance to show this characters more “human side, the problem is I didn’t believe it. Now what I did believe was his response to being angry. I’m probably confused here, and I’d be happy to give up five minutes to have it explained to me (and only five minutes) as to when Magneto got a heart. Did I miss something? Please don’t say “go
back and watch the movies again — just give me the answer in five! Fassbender and McAvoy could read a phone book and I’d be happy, thought I’d throw that out there too. These two have given a young men’s perspective on the original Charles and Eric relationship, and I’ve enjoyed it. Lawrence as Raven/Mystique seems to be the mom of the group. Wanting to protect each of them and reaching out to Erik, she will do what’s necessary in the name of X-Men. Hoult as Hank is smart and clearly still dealing with emotions about his gal-pal blue counterpart. Smit-McPhee as Kurt/Nightcrawler was actually sweet, fast and even a little funny at times. Hardy as Angel has issues with his wings that end up being more sharp than feathery. Shipp as Ororo/ Storm spends more time watching than doing. Munn as Psylocke isn’t happy with X-MEN, continued on Page 17

Prosecutor Marcia Clark’s new novel, “Blood Defense, takes on the life of a defense attorney.

case. It was agony every single day since the issue should have been how lives were brutally taken with this double homicide. EC: Do you think because Simpson had celebrity status the outcome today would still be the same? MC: He was revered and worshipped by men. The irony to me is that many cops felt that way also. Today, racism, domestic violence and sexism are still issues. They are still very much on the table. Would he get convicted today if tried? A lot would depend on the judge and the nature of the jury. There was a very bad ruling that allowed racial epithets to be introduced as evidence when there was no basis for it. Mark Fuhrman did not have any opportunity to plant the glove, so it should not have mattered if he was a racist or not. If he could not have done it there is no relevance to bringing it in. However, it was going to be injected into the trial one way or another. No matter what we did it was already there months before we started to pick a jury. EC: Did race or celebrity play a role in finding Simpson innocent? MC: Race really skewed it. But the ultimate factors were a combination of race and celebrity. If he had not been famous and was just a regular guy who happened to be black, he would have been convicted. If he had been a white guy who was famous he would have been convicted. This combination presented an unassailable obstacle that became clearer every day of the trial. We watched the jury fail to respond to anything we said, which was why the verdict was no surprise for us. The jury basically rejected us from day one. It was horrible.
Marcia Clark is well known as the prosecutor of O. J. Simpson and for her bestselling series featuring Rachel Knight, a Los Angeles prosecutor. Her latest, “Blood Defense, is the first in a new series with criminal defense attorney Samantha Brinkman. Brinkman is struggling to make a name for herself until she lands a “dream case. It is a high profile double-murder case in which one of the victims is a beloved TV star, and the defendant is a decorated veteran LAPD detective. With the aid of her office manager, Michelle, and investigator Alex, Brinkman must use everything she has to spin the publicity. Already facing an uphill battle, she pulls out all the stops in her quest to uncover evidence that will clear the detective and his name. Elise Cooper: Before we discuss your book, I have to ask what you thought of FX’s television series, “American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson, since you were the prosecutor? Marcia Clark: It was gratifying to see that they got big issues correct, especially the issue of race and the way that it had an impact on everything in the trial. On top of that, it incorporated a lot of major league issues: race, sexism, domestic violence and the impact a celebrity has on the judicial system. EC: Did you like your portrayal? MC: The acting was phenomenal. I am a fan girl of Sarah Paulson and thought she did an amazing job. Sarah gave such a beautiful, nuanced performance. She very accurately portrayed how I felt on the inside with all the pain and frustration as I CLARK, continued on Page 19 watched everyone forget this was a murder 'PS BEWFSUJTJOH JOGPSNBUJPO DBMM t BEWFSUJTJOH!NJMJUBSZQSFTT DPN

Amputee from 9/11 attacks wins 7 medals at Invictus Games ORLANDO — Sarah Rudder was on the verge of a key promotion in the U.S. Marines on Sept. 11, 2001, when the terrorist attacks struck and eventually left her without a leg. But she has come back from that setback to thrive on another stage, winning seven medals through Tuesday in two days of Paralympic events ranging from rowing to shot-put at the international Invictus Games founded by Britain’s Prince Harry for wounded members of armed services. “It was amazing, Rudder said. “It shows that just because I’m an amputee doesn’t mean I can’t go out and put my heart and soul on the track or any event that I do. Rudder, awaiting her promotion ceremony, was unscathed in the Sept. 11 attack on the Pentagon and able to help others to safety, but two days later she was not so lucky. When she returned to the defense complex to help remove remains of victims, her left ankle got stuck in a concrete barrier and was crushed. The injury, which required five reconstructive surgeries, eventually led to her left leg being amputated two years ago. “The pain was debilitating, Rudder said. “I couldn’t take it anymore. After struggling to deal with the loss of a limb, Rudder found a way to turn despair into triumph through sports. She became a part of the military’s Wounded Warrior
Sarah Rudder crosses the finish line in first place during the Invictus Games Orlando 2016 Track & Field Finals at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex
program, which paved the way for Rudder Sports complex in Orlando following an to compete in the Invictus Games, held opening ceremony Sunday evening. By Tuesday, Rudder already had won this year at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of seven medals for Team USA, taking home the first gold medal of the games on Monday when she finished first in the lightweight powerlifting competition. She also won gold in the one-minute indoor rowing competition. On Tuesday, Rudder won gold in the discus and 100 meters and also took home silver medals in four-minute indoor rowing, shot-put and 200 meters dash for a two-day total of seven medals. Excelling at the Invictus Games, which includes nearly 400 wounded and sick servicemen and women from 14 countries around the world, allows Rudder to prove that her injury won’t limit what she can accomplish. That was the precisely Prince Harry’s
goal when he started the Invictus Games a year ago. “I served along with soldiers from all over the world, Prince Harry said at the opening ceremony. “I saw the sacrifices they and their families made to serve their nations. I learned about the importance of team work and camaraderie in the way that only military service can teach you. Rudder, who won nine medals in last year’s Warrior Games, said it was amazing to see competitors with so many different kinds of injuries. “I might be missing a leg but there are people out there missing two and three limbs or are paralyzed from the waist down or chest down. They are my inspiration. “Me just having one leg missing, I’m able to look at them and say, ‘If they can do it, I can do it.’

DON’T FIGHT IT: STEPHEN CURRY IS A LEGEND By David Steele Sporting News
The fight is over. Stephen Curry won. All the old-school legends and oldschool fans who have been throwing punches at Curry and his Warriors team and his style and his toughness all year ‌ time to shut your cake-holes, stop embarrassing yourselves and get out of denial. Charles Barkley, Oscar Robertson, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman — and you, too. Stephen Jackson and Cedric Ceballos, and all your friends — it’s over. You lost. Go sit together in a bar somewhere, moan about the good ol’ days of handchecking and clotheslining and the lost art of the 15-foot jumper, and let the rest of us enjoy what’s unfolding in front of us. Because it’s literally too much to enjoy. His return in Portland was a feast, and if it was food that still looks weird to some people, we suggest you stop scowling at it and take a sample taste. The fourth quarter and, especially, overtime, was Curry’s ticket to immortality — but only if he hadn’t punched that ticket already. Too many people are trying not to punch it. Stop. Stop it right now. Get over yourselves. Curry, the first unanimous MVP in NBA history, is in destroy-your-sleep mode, the way Magic and the Showtime Lakers were.
And the way he’s doing it ‌ no, it’s not an abomination, it’s not a disgrace, it’s not something the old-timers would’ve punched and clubbed and bludgeoned out of him. It’s not the way you played, but you know what it is? It’s the way people never imagined it could be played, on a level beyond what had existed before. Like Oscar, and Wilt, and Pearl, and Magic and Michael and why are we still debating this? Instead of, say, embracing it. You know who just reached the conference finals by torching from three-point land last week? The Cavaliers. Know who’s taking and making threes all of a sudden after years of putting that weapon aside? Dwyane Wade. This is the NBA today. This is how Stephen Curry plays it, this is how he dominates it, this is how he becomes a back-to-back MVP on a team chasing back-to-back titles. Evolve or die. Curry is evolution. You don’t have to like it, but no one actually has to care what you think of it. Why and how disparaging Curry and the Warriors has become America’s favorite sport this year is mind-boggling. The legends are leading the way. Not Golden State Warriors Point Guard Stephen Curry was elected the NBA’s first unanimous MVP in history. enough people are publicly pushing He’s in rearrange-your-life-to-watch-him rambling on about how none of these back against it. Too many are encourmode, the way Michael was. He’s in “Your brats today can hold his jockâ€? mode. The STEPHEN CURRY, continued on Page 16 grandkids are going to ask why you keep way, you know, Oscar is.

Budweiser renames itself ‘America’ for the summer What are these people thinking? Sometimes a company’s rebranding efforts make sense. Research in Motion was probably better off simply calling itself Blackberry, the company’s bestknown product, and it’s understandable that Philip Morris tried to distance itself from ties to tobacco and cancer by renaming itself with a selfless-sounding but ultimately meaningless word, Altria. Meanwhile, sometimes a brand is basically forced to get a new name, like the poor chocolate manufacturer that had the misfortune of sharing a name with the terrorist group ISIS. Still, to the casual consumer and even to some marketing experts, other rebranding campaigns seem misguided, puzzling, or just plain stupid. The latest questionable brand rename comes from Budweiser beer, which will be labeled as “America on bottles, cans, and packaging this summer. “We thought nothing was more iconic than Budweiser and nothing was more iconic than America, said Tosh Hall, creative director at the company’s branding firm JKR, according to Fast Company. Beyond the oddness of renaming a beer after a country, what’s not mentioned in

Belgian-owned Budweiser will label itself ‘America.’
the quote above is that the company in question that makes Budweiser is Anheuser-Busch InBev, and this company is not American. Since a 2008 merger, this global corporation’s headquarters have been in Belgium, not in St. Louis or anywhere else in the U.S. — and no amount of sponsoring “Made in America festivals or slapping stars and stripes or the word “America on cans of Bud will change that.

Marines name San Diego native musician of the year By Cpl. Demetrius Morgan 1st Marine Division
Staff Sgt. Alexander Jason Panos, a trombone player with the 1st Marine Division Band, was recognized as the Marine Corps Musician of the Year Award for 2015, aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. Two Marine Corps musicians are recognized for superior skills and accomplishments annually. One of those Marines is a non-commissioned officer and the other a staff non-commissioned officer in a competitive field of world-class musicians. He will be awarded formally in a ceremony in Washington, D.C., in December. Although this is Panos’ first time winning the award, it’s not the first time he has attempted to achieve the accolade. “I have submitted for it many times and have not got it, Panos said. “This is my first time actually winning it and it feels really good. It’s an honor and a privilege. Panos’ journey as a musician started long before his decision to defend the nation. He graduated from Christian High

I joined two years after college and I’m glad I did it. Musicians in the Marine Corps are not simply judged for their musical talents. Each individual is a Marine first, trained as a basic rifleman. Panos embraces both the role of being a talented musician within the band and upholding the standards of a Marine. “I love it, he stated. “I like being both a Marine and a musician, so I get to take the talents that I honed before joining and I get to use them, but first and foremost I’m a United States Marine and there are a lot MUSICIAN, continued on Page 18

‘Sextortion’ cases spike at Naval bases After a spike in reports of sexual extortion, or “sextortion, across the Navy, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service is warning sailors not to engage in sexually explicit activities online. Sextortion is a crime in which someone requests money in exchange for not releasing sexually explicit images or information. Both the number of cases and incidents is growing, according to NCIS, which says that since August 2012, perpetrators have targeted at least 160 sailors and marines across the country, resulting in the loss of about $45,000. Typically, perpetrators will request anywhere from $500 to $1,500. “We’ve had service members individually pay as much as $11,000, NCIS Division Chief Megan Bolduc said. “It only stops because credit cards were maxed out. The actual number of incidents could be much higher, given that many victims are embarrassed to report that they’ve been the victim of such schemes. The encounters often start on social media sites such as Facebook, or dating websites such as PlentyOfFish or MeetMe. On Facebook, sailors will receive a friend request from an attractive individual they don’t know, but with whom they might have mutual friends. Perpetrators will send requests to multiple people in a community, such as sailors in the same Naval school class or boot camp classmates, to establish the appearance of legitimacy. At some point, the sailor and the perpetrator exchange contact information and that’s often followed by the sharing of explicit photos and videos. The images also are shared via direct message on various social media platforms. The perpetrator then will threaten to release the pictures or videos if the sailor doesn’t wire money. Even after a sailor wires money, the perpetrator can keep them on the hook for more. Most of the wire transfers are going to international accounts in the Philippines, which requires complaints to be filed in person. “We are working to see if there are any ties to the states where we might be able to prosecute individuals accordingly, Bolduc said. When the encounters happen on SEXTORTION, continued on Page 16

11 years after battles, some say it’s time for a USS Fallujah Wade Spann remembers pushing into the city of Fallujah, Iraq under cover of darkness on April 4, 2004, as an infantry assaultman with 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, bayonets fixed atop their rifles to send a clear message to the enemy insurgents within. Thinking back on the assault that would become the largest urban battle since Vietnam, Spann, 33, marvels at the “allout nature of the fight and the courage of the troops who entered the city with unarmored Humvees and little previous fighting experience. “We saw firsthand how ‘Wild, Wild West’ it was, he said. “We saw [rocketpropelled grenades] skipped across the roads towards us. More than 120 Americans were killed in the two battles of Fallujah, 54 of them in a bloody nine-day span in November 2004 during the second battle, Operation Phantom Fury. Eleven prestigious Navy Cross medals were awarded for actions in Fallujah, two of them posthumously. In addition, Fallujah produced one of the most enduring and iconic images from the post-9/11 wars: journalist Lucian Read’s photograph of a grievously wounded Marine 1st Sgt. Bradley Kasal

emerging from what would become known as “Hell House, supported by two Marines. Kasal received the Navy Cross for his heroism on that day. By impact, scope, and significance, Fallujah, experts argue, has earned its place alongside legendary Marine Corps battles from Iwo Jima to Hue City. So is it time that Fallujah, like those predecessors, be memorialized in the name of a
U.S. Navy warship? Jerry Hendrix, a retired Navy captain and senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security, has tried to make it happen. A former director of naval history for the Department of the Navy, Hendrix has submitted Fallujah as a ship name twice, most recently for LHA-7, an FALLUJAH, continued on Page 14

Corps dumps car decals After years of consideration, the Marine Corps is joining the other military services in eliminating vehicle decals used to access bases. The decals, which identify vehicles with access to military installations, were once used broadly throughout the Defense Department. But amid heightened security protocols, the stickers have become at best irrelevant and at worst a liability for troops and family members. In their place, base commanders will order vehicle spot checks by law enforcement to ensure cars comply with registration requirements. In light of 2015 policy updates requiring 100-percent ID card checks at all base gates, the Marine Corps said the, “vehicle decals no longer serve a useful purpose. The Marine Corps continued its use of vehicle decals years after the other services did away with them. The Air Force eliminated the decal requirement in 2007, and the Army and Navy followed suit in 2011.

FALLUJAH Continued from Page 12
America-class amphibious ship that was ultimately christened USS Tripoli. Hendrix said he would like to see two ships tasked with carrying Marines named for battles from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. But Fallujah, for him, is an obvious first choice. “It’s the first one that comes to mind, he said. Another retired Navy officer, a wellknown military blogger who goes by the pen name CDR Salamander, first proposed a USS Fallujah in 2010. Now, more than 11 years after the battle, he believes the time for a Fallujah namesake has more than come. “We’ve been at war since, depending on where you draw the line, 2001. And our senior leadership has felt obligated to recognize political peers, he said. “There has yet been an effort to recognize some of the very heroic battles that this generation has been involved in. Salamander, who asked that his real name not be used, expressed strong disapproval of Navy Secretary Ray Mabus’ decisions to name recent ships after lawmak-
ers, some living. Controversy has followed Mabus’ 2012 naming of the fifth Independence-class littoral combat ship after Democratic former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was wounded in a 2011 mass shooting; the 2010 naming of the 10th San Antonioclass amphibious transport dock after Democratic Rep. John P. Murtha, who died the same year; and, most recently, the announcement this year that the 70th Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer would be named for Democratic former Sen. Carl. M. Levin, who chaired the Senate Armed Services Committee and retired last January. The naming of the USS John P. Murtha especially rankled some Marines and sailors who had been offended by Murtha’s opposition to the Iraq war, and his public condemnation ahead of a trial of Marines accused of war crimes in Haditha, Iraq, in 2005. “Fallujah has almost become a reference point to the fact that there are other things our leaders think are more important to name ships after, Salamander said. “I think that’s part of it, the bigger picture. The smaller picture, is that the battle of Fallujah, if you were going to pick a battle,
that would be in your top five, if not your top three, to pick from [for a ship name].â€? Perhaps more crucial to understanding the hesitancy to christen a USS Fallujah is the region’s recent history, he said. Almost exactly nine years after Operation Phantom Fury, news came in January 2014 that Fallujah had fallen to Al Qaida militants, a blow that prompted painful reflection among many who had fought there. With that loss still fresh, Hendrix said, it may be too soon to mark the battle with a ship name. “The Iraq War has carried a lot of emotional baggage for people from both political persuasions. Getting people to come to grips with that, it just seems like we’re too close to it,â€? he said. “It’s not like Iwo Jima, it’s not like Tripoli where the situation has sort of stabilized. The sacrifices are deeply felt, and it doesn’t seem like there’s a lot of appetite at this time.â€? But for Adel Abudayeh, a medically retired Marine staff sergeant who fought in Phantom Fury with 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines, Fallujah is about the troops who fought there bravely, not the battle’s strategic significance or long-term outcome. Abudayeh, 32, lost his best friend in the battle and remembers a ‘fog of war’ so intense that it blended one day into another. “When we heard the news that Fallujah got retaken by the enemy, there was a whole bunch of people upset,â€? Abudayeh recalled. “But you need to remember that we were tasked to go clear the city of insurgents ‌ and that’s exactly what we did. It was never to conquer that city and hold it forever. I didn’t care that [the enemy] took it back.â€? Hendrix suggested Fallujah may be an appropriate name for one of the future L(X)Rs, a new class of 11 amphibious ships intended to replace aging dock landing ships. According to a congressional background briefing report, the Navy plans to buy the first of the ships in 2020. If we do see a USS Fallujah, he said, it’s likely it will be in the next presidential administration.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos says the company plans to hire 25,000 veterans or spouses of active-duty members, as well as provide training and certifications for cloud computing skills for 10,000 transitioning servicemembers. An additional 40 companies plan to hire more than 110,000 veterans and military spouses over the next five years. When Obama and Biden started Joining Forces in 2011, veteran unemployment rate was more than 12 percent. After five years, and 1.2 million veterans and military spouses gainfully employed by companies with Joining Forces connections, unemployment rate has fallen among veterans to lower than the national average.

dating websites, which require users to be 18 years old, often a person, who alleges that he is a law enforcement officer or the perpetrator’s father, reaches out to the sailor. That person claims the sailor has shared images with a minor and is in possession of child pornography, and threatens to file charges. In some cases, the pictures or videos have made it onto Facebook or Youtube. Both sites have been “very responsive, means they are going to be fearful of damaging their careers by being associated with this type of situation, Bolduc said. There’s also a concern that the perpetrators could try and obtain sensitive information from sailors or other service members. NCIS encourages victims to maintain their communications with the perpetrators. “Screen captures or printouts of the conversations or anything like that is always very helpful, in. Can we do a film about Quicksilver? I have a feeling it would be like “Deadpool, Continued from Page 2 but with less swearing. the actual film starts and don’t miss anything in the middle of that. Then, when the story begins, I’m back in Egypt feeling like I’m watching “The Mummy (1999), or maybe it’s the “Star Trek film where Spock dies and they have to do the Kolinahr to change bodies. Then Magneto/Eric is in the woods being a normal Russian Husband/Dad/Iron Worker sporting a lumberjack beard. That storyline was pretty predictable and the reaction was even more predictable. When did Magneto become such a good guy? Maybe when the very sexy Fassbender took the role — no offense Gandolf! Raven is trying to rescue mutants like she found a box of puppies on a street corner. Don’t get me wrong, I love Lawrence, I think I’m just done with the whole XMen who-is-bad-and-who-changes thing. Yes, my list is very long, but the point is really that no one needs to listen to anything I say.
I have to say that in “Captain America: Civil War released last week, the issue of what superheroes do seems to affect “normal people with mass destruction on a huge scale along with lots of death (and not of the villains or superheroes). I couldn’t get that out of my head with this film too. It might be time to rein them in because I don’t think I can sit through another city being demolished because some super villain has an ego problem. There, I said it. “X-Men fans are going to go, and go they should. After everything I’ve said I can honestly say the film is CGI entertaining enough, and that’s seems to be all it takes to get butts in the seats. In the end — only the strong will survive! Jeri Jacquin is the Movie Maven. For more on films and television, go to http://moviemaven. homestead.com. .BZ 17

CLARK Continued from Page 3
EC: Why did you decide to write this new series? MC: I wanted to incorporate my experiences as a defense lawyer. I started out in private practice as a criminal defense attorney. Currently, I am handling court appointed appeals for the defense. I wanted to write about the interesting moral and ethical wrinkles to riding the defense side because a defense attorney’s goal is solely to defend the client. The prosecutor has to make sure that it’s a fair trial; the defense has no obligation. EC: You emphasize in the book how one of the victims can be forgotten in a multiple murder case. Ron Goldman comes to mind. MC: There was Chloe Monahan, a nearsuperstar actress who resurrected her career, and the other victim Paige Avner. Chloe was the one people were invested in. Then you have her roommate, Paige, just a normal person who was not famous. I did want to emphasize that the less famous become an after thought. Fred Goldman kept mentioning, “what about Ron, it is not all about Nicole. I am sure this had something to do with me wanting to write the disparity and treatment between Chloe and Paige. Yet, at the time I was writing this I was not thinking about Ron. My life experiences and case works creep into my books whether I am aware of the connection or not. EC: How do your experiences influence your writings? MC: My various experiences find their ways to be woven into the stories even when I did not mean to and they just happen. My experience with a high profile case helped me write this story. Defendants, witnesses and people I have known throughout my life find their way into my books. Although I do have to say cases have to be made more interesting in novels than in real life. EC: People will remember how your words, appearance and hair came into play when you were a prosecutor. You also speak
about these with Samantha’s appearance. Please explain. MC: I wanted to show how a defense attorney with an unpopular client must appear engaging and warm. She has to be as charismatic as possible to try and spin public opinion. How she looks and how she acts reflects directly on her client. EC: How about juries? MC: Juries expect lawyers to look normal. If you walk in looking glamorous you might lose credibility. Yet, you must be very pulled together. It does matter for men and women, although women undergo much greater scrutiny. I always wondered, if your career is not modeling, why should your appearance be critiqued? I think women who have jobs that have nothing to do with their appearance are held to a standard that is absurd. As long as a woman is pulled together and professional looking I don’t know why there should be any comments. Unfortunately, it is not that way. EC: In the book you show how social media becomes a factor in trials. MC: If Sam were a wealthy lawyer she would have hired someone to just monitor social media. It is keeping your finger on the pulse to see how the public is feeling about witnesses, the evidence and your defendant. I definitely wanted to show how today’s technology is being used by lawyers. Although as a writer I find it makes it harder to write mysteries. I put technology into this story by having Sam making announcements on Twitter and her investigators attempting to find people through social media. EC: You also write a lot about the realities of a defense attorney. Why? MC: I wanted to show how she is aware that most of her clients are guilty and at times needs to protect herself from them. Some are very dangerous and carry a big threat. In the book I write how people think the defendant most likely hates the prosecutor and judge. The truth of the matter is they most likely hate their own lawyer who heaps the blame. I hoped I showed the mentality of a defense attorney.
