AMERICA LOVES AN UPSET Trump’s victory shocked the elites, but history is full of surprises Donald Trump is going to be president. Despite the all-but-certain predictions that Hillary Clinton would win in a landslide, Americans thought differently. As the media, pollsters and the Democratic Party try to figure out how they got this election so wrong — marijuana won more states than Clinton — it’s good to remember that election upsets aren’t anything knew. In fact, American history is rife with them. Here’s a few of our favorites:
THE ‘CORRUPT BARGAIN’ TRUMAN DEFEATS DEWEY Weeks before the 1948 election, the Washington Star ran a political cartoon showing a distraught President Harry Truman looking at a bulletin board full of dismal headlines about his re-election chances. In the cartoon, Truman’s opponent, Thomas Dewey, stands behind the president, smirking and saying, “What’s the use of going through with the election? No one thought Truman would win a second term. Dewey was an incredibly popular figure, and Truman also faced open rebellion within his own party as Strom Thurmond made a run as the leader of the racist Dixiecrats. Despite a near national conviction that he would lose the election, Truman campaigned fiercely in the fall of 1948. And though the Chicago Tribune (in)famously declared that “Dewey Defeats Truman in its morning-after headline, the count of actual votes showed President Truman had convincingly beat his challenger.
KENNEDY KNOCKS OUT NIXON Vice President Richard Nixon was a likely successor to the popular Dwight Eisenhower. But Nixon’s opponent in the 1960 presidential contest was Sen. John F. Kennedy, one of the most talented young politicians of the 20th century. Boosted by his performances in four debates — the first televised debates in U.S. history — Kennedy narrowly defeated Nixon. Only 113,000 votes, or less than 0.2 percent of the total votes cast, separated the two candidates, and though Nixon took more states, Kennedy won the Electoral College. He was the youngest president ever elected, and won the closest U.S. presidential election of the 20th century. 'PS BEWFSUJTJOH JOGPSNBUJPO DBMM t BEWFSUJTJOH!NJMJUBSZQSFTT DPN
In the presidential election of 1824, another son of a former president had lost the popular vote. In this contest, John Quincy Adams, son of President John Adams, received only 31 percent of the popular vote, while 41 percent of voters had backed his main challenger, Andrew Jackson, with two other candidates splitting the remainder. Though he won the most popular support, Jackson did not have enough Electoral College votes to claim office — giving the House of Representatives the presidential vote. Speaker of the House Henry Clay, who had come in fourth place as a presidential candidate, rallied support for Adams, and was later appointed by Adams as his secretary of state. Due to Clay’s backing and his subsequent promotion, the House voting for Adams became known as the “Corrupt Bargain. Four years later, Andrew Jackson would defeat Adams soundly.
REAGAN’S LATE SURGE Today, Ronald Reagan’s 1980 defeat of Jimmy Carter seems like it must have been a foregone conclusion. After all, Reagan won 44 out of 50 states and beat Carter by more than 10 percent in the final popular vote tally. But only a week or so before the election, Carter was ahead. A late October Gallop Poll put the incumbent Carter up by 8 percent among registered voters and by 3 percent among likely voters. But Reagan’s performance in that contest’s only televised debate, held on Oct. 28, changed voters’ minds, and the ground shifted under Carter’s feet. Despite late polls putting him behind, Reagan accomplished a dramatic victory. /PW 1
THE GREATEST SPORTS UPSET THE MIRACLE ON ICE “Do you believe in miracles? asked Al Michaels, and everyone did after the U.S. beat the Soviet Union 4-3 in the medal round of the 1980 Winter Olympics. The Soviets, who had won eight of the previous nine Olympic gold medals, had blown away the American college kids 10-3 in a pretournament exhibition just days before.
NUGGETS EMBARASS
SUPER BOWL III Joe Namath guaranteed victory at poolside, and the Jets shocked the Colts 16-7, striking a blow for AFL equality and laying the groundwork for the NFL merger. 2 /PW
DOUGLAS KOS TYSON The weight-challenged journeyman Buster Douglas was a 42-to-1 underdog against the undefeated Mike Tyson. But when the smoke had cleared on Feb. 10, 1990, in Tokyo Japan, the “baddest man on the planet was lying on his back, and his heavyweight championship belt was missing.
Who can forget the image of Dikembe Mutombo lying on his back, kicking his feet in pure joy, after Denver knocked off Seattle in the first round of the 1994 NBA playoffs, the first No. 8 seed ever to beat a No. 1 seed? Denver had been blown out in the first two games of the five-game series, but rallied to wi including Game 5 in overtime.

KNIGHT TAKES US ‘INTO THE BADLANDS’ By Jeri Jacquin MilitaryPress
A
MC has quickly become the cable channel to watch with the amazing shows it has brought to viewers. One of these series is “Into the Badlands, which broke out onto the scene with its first season earlier this year. “Badlands takes us to a strange world of a feudal system, where seven barons are fighting for position and power. Baron Quinn is one such individual, and since there are no guns, the Baron uses his army of lethal fighters led by Sunny — and he rules with an iron fist. During a battle, Quinn discovers a boy named M.K. who seems to have powers that intrigue Quinn. He directs Sunny to train the boy, but that doesn’t stop the word from getting out about M.K., and another baron wants the boy as well. Aramis Knight plays the young Colt M.K., and from the moment he is seen on screen, it was clear to me that he was perfect in this role. Knight has spent years of his young life acting in television in series such as “Girl Meets World, “Parenthood, “Single with Parents, “Dexter and even “Boston Legal. His film career includes “Rendition and “Ender’s Game in the role of Bean. He can be seen in the next “Guardians of the Galaxy film.
By Elise Cooper MilitaryPress
I had the opportunity to speak with Knight about his role as M.K. in the AMC series “Into the Badlands. Jeri Jacquin: Let’s dive right into it then. Tell me how you came to get the role of the mysterious M.K. for AMC’s “Into the Badlands? Aramis Knight: It was actually a very interesting audition process for M.K. I say

there are a few projects that I read, that I also completely see myself in that role. That was very much what I saw with “Into the Badlands. I read the scripts and really got a feel for the story and, totally saw me in the character and that’s something I strive for. Let me say that I’m really proud to be a part of it. The audition process was that I was the first guy to go in for the role of M.K. It was all in the very early stages and I would say it was September of 2013. They liked me, and I really liked them, but nothing was set between us for four or five months. I even told my rep that I wanted to really go for “Into the Badlands, and they auditioned 500 boys before calling me back in. They asked me to test and I got it! I mean it felt right the whole time. JJ: I have to say now, knowing there were that many people auditioning for the role, that I cannot imagine them not choosing you! You are so perfect for this role. AK: I was really the first person who went in, and I guess they had to turn every stone to see that it was a good fit. I think it
“No Man’s Land by David Baldacci on the surface seems like a science fiction story. But this thriller, featuring U.S. Army criminal investigator John Puller, has a very plausible theme with a compelling and action-packed plot. The storyline has two men combating demons they experienced 30 years ago. Seemingly unrelated, Baldacci does a great job intertwining the two characters. Puller ‘s mother disappeared 30 years ago and now CID investigators are accusing his father of possibly murdering her. Aided by his brother Robert, an Air Force major, and Veronica Knox, who works for a shadowy U.S. intelligence organization, Puller begins a journey that will take him back into his own past to find the truth about his mother. Simultaneously, Paul Rodgers begins his own journey after getting paroled from jail. He was basically a guinea pig in an experiment to make a “super soldier. His body was altered so that he wouldn’t fear physical pain, his brain was changed so that he wouldn’t feel guilt over killing and he was changed to become a fighting machine. Regretting being turned into a “monster, he seeks out the two people responsible for his plight to make them pay for ruining his life. Beyond this riveting and heartwrenching story, Baldacci explores many issues, including dementia, human experiments and conspiracy theories. He has a knack for having the reader hate some of the characters in the

‘The Simpsons’ on predicting Trump presidency: ‘Being right sucks’ Sixteen years ago, “The Simpsonsâ€? writers predicted a Donald Trump presidency. On the night of Nov. 13, in the first show to air after Trump’s victory, they expressed their regret. In the opening credits, which change every episode, Bart Simpson grimaced as he wrote on the blackboard: “BEING RIGHT SUCKS.â€? It was an allusion to a prediction made in a 2000 episode, which featured Lisa as the nation’s first “straight femaleâ€? president. Her older brother Bart had slacked away his life, but offered a solution she was unable to see. From the Oval Office, Lisa said: “As you know, we’ve inherited quite a budget crunch from President Trump.â€? Trump was just the right comedic fit at the time, episode writer Dan Greaney recently said. The writers were looking for a celebrity name that would sound slyly absurdist. “The story was really about Bart saving Lisa’s presidency,â€? Greaney said. “Lisa has a problem beyond her abilityâ€? — the kind that only Bart could solve. Greaney said Trump “seems like a ‘Simpsons’-esque figure — he fits right in there, in an over-the-top way‌ He seemed kind of lovable in the old days, in a blowhard way.â€?
“But now that he’s running for president, I see that in a much darker way, the Emmy-winning writer-producer said earlier this year. “The Simpsons riffed on Trump earlier this season, in a scene that showed both major-party candidates receiving an important 3 a.m. phone call. Hillary Clinton was well prepared for the call, but Trump initially rejected it because he was busy tweeting about Elizabeth Warren, a Democrat and a harsh Trump critic. He answered the second phone call, but his trip to the Situation Room was hampered by an elaborate grooming regimen.

CONGRESS MAY NOT REQUIRE WOMEN TO REGISTER FOR DRAFT Study ranks Final decision likely best cities after inauguration day for veterans While U.S. Defense Department officials have made clear it has no problem with requiring women to register for the draft, lawmakers in Congress appear poised to dodge the issue in the upcoming battle over the defense policy bill. House and Senate negotiators plan to shelve the provision in the Senate version of the National Defense Authorization Act in favor of ordering up a study of the issue, sources told Politico and the Washington Examiner. “Neither majorities support it, a source told Politico. “There’s bigger things to worry about in the $602 billion defense bill proposed by the Pentagon and the White House. A spokesman for the House Armed Services Committee declined to comment on whether the proposal to have women register for the draft would be scrapped but said a House and Senate conference committee would take up the legislation when Congress returns next week. Congress passed a stopgap spending measure known as a continuing resolution, or CR, in September to avoid a government shutdown before they recessed to campaign for re-election The measure

Four of the top 10 U.S. cities for veterans are in Texas, according to a new study released by a personal finance website. The study, conducted by WalletHub, found that the Texas cities of Laredo, Plano, Austin and El Paso are all among the nation’s best for military veterans based on 21 factors like the availability of military-skills related jobs, veteran unemployment, economic health, overall veteran population and access to Department of Veteran Affairs administered healthcare. Among the other top 10 cities overall are Scottsdale, Ariz,., which came in first, Irvine and San Diego, Colorado Springs, Colo. and Tampa and Orlando, Fla. At the bottom of the list are Detroit,, which ranked as worst for veterans, Newark, N.J., Cleveland, Ohio and Memphis, Tenn. The top cities ranked strongly for factors like economy, job availability for veterans and overall quality of life. “I think one of the key takeaways here is that jobs and economy really play into anyone’s retirement a career – but veterans even more so because they are often younger, said Jill Gonzalez, a WalletHub analyst. “They really do need to make sure the job opportunities in whatever cities they are settling down in are good for veterans. The study analyzed data from a variety of sources including the U.S. Census Bureau, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the VA to draw its conclusions. It examined and ranked the top 100 most populated cities nationwide. Gonzalez said the most important factor to examine for most veterans looking to relocate is economics and jobs. “Employment is so important – especially before you’re settling down in a city, that’s something that you really need to think about before, she said.

Navy names ship after Marine hero The first African-American to earn aviator wings in the Marine Corps and the first one to receive a brigadier general star in the Corps has been honored as the namesake of the Navy’s upcoming DDG 121, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer. Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Frank E. Petersen, Jr. joined the Navy in 1950 and was commissioned as a Marine officer in 1952. He served in Korea and Vietnam before retiring in 1988. Before his retirement, he was the seniormost aviator in the Marine Corps and the Department of the Navy. During his time in Korea and Vietnam, Petersen flew over 350 combat missions. He flew more than 4,000 hours during his career and was shot down over Vietnam in 1968. His awards include the Navy DistinFrank Peterson guished Service Medal, the Distinguished Service Medal, and the Distinguished Flying Cross. “The courage and perseverance of Lt. Gen. Petersen throughout his distinguished and ground-breaking career make him especially deserving of this honor, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus said. “Those who serve aboard DDG 121 will, for decades, carry on the storied legacy of this Marine Corps hero. The USS Lt. Gen. Frank E. Petersen, Jr. is expected to reach the fleet in 2020 and will have the mission to fight against threats from the air, surface ships, and underwater vessels. The ship will be built according to Flight IIA configuration which features improved anti-air capabilities through updated AEGIS missile systems. The newest versions of the Flight IIA configurations allow these ships to defend against multiple incoming missiles at once. The USS John Paul Jones shot down three missile targets at nearly the same moment in a 2014 test.
Servicemembers and vets smoke and drink more People who have served in the military smoke and drink more and sleep less than the general population, according to a report released by the United Health Foundation. The study, based off a survey of approximately 60,000 veterans and service members annually from 2011 through 2014, also found higher rates of coronary heart disease, heart attack and cancer. Researchers said they’ll deliver the results to the Department of Defense, Department of Veterans Affairs and other health care providers in the hopes that it will help with treatment. “We owe it to these people to see if anything can be done, if we could identify opportunities to improve, said Richard Migliori, senior adviser to the United Health Foundation, an offspring of insurer United Health Group. “I think we found some meaningful things here. The findings show 25.2 percent of servicemembers and veterans who are 18 to 39 years old smoke, compared to 20.7 percent of the general population of the same age range. Approximately 20 percent of servicemembers and veterans drink excessively, while 18.1 percent of others do. Drinking excessively was defined by the report as either binge drinking, having five or more drinks in one sitting, or heavy drinking, which means having more than two drinks each day. Service members and veterans are 39 percent more likely than others not to sleep enough. “Since we found issues with sleep, smoking and alcohol use, we know we may be dealing with an area of stress – these are all stress related, Migliori said. “The good things about those findings, those are things that can be immediately worked on. Physicians should be focusing on those particular behaviors as they engage their patients. Smoking and drinking could be a direct cause of the higher rates of coronary heart

disease and cancer in people with military service, Migliori said. Servicemembers and veterans are 62 percent more likely to have coronary heart disease and 67 percent more likely to have a heart attack, the study found. Nearly 50 percent of veterans older than 80 years of age have been diagnosed with cancer, compared to about 34 percent of others older than 80. The types of cancers most frequently diagnosed by the VA are prostate, lung and colorectal cancer, the report states. Previous studies have linked military service to increased risk for different types of cancer, such as the herbicide Agent Orange causing non-Hodgkin lymphoma in some veterans of the Vietnam War. Rene Campos, a retired commander in the Navy and leader with the Military Officers Association of America, a nonprofit group that collaborated on the report, said she wanted to “dig into the cancer statistics, as well as a finding that female servicemembers and veterans experience depression at higher rates. About 25.5 percent of them reported they were told by a health care provider they had a depressive disorder, while 22 percent of other females did.
Though they’re at more risk for various health issues, veterans and servicemembers are less likely to tell their doctors about them. “This data suggests those who have served will understate their illness or burden, he said. “Because I know these individuals who have served are less likely to complain about something, physicians should be advised to follow their instincts and maybe lower your threshold for ordering tests and making diagnoses. There were some positive findings, too. People with military service are more likely to be physically active and have health insurance. More servicemembers and veterans also see their doctors for cancer screenings, and more get flu vaccines and have regular dental visits. Campos said the information could help drive policy changes. “There’s a very big topic of discussion on how the VA provides care to veterans, Campos said. “This paints a comparative portrait of those who have served against the civilian population. I think it gives that baseline view of who this population is and gives us data to work from.

DRAFT Continued from Page 6
The Senate Armed Services Committee then said that Carter’s action had removed any justification for limiting draft registration to men. “The fact is every single leader in this country, both men and women, members of the military leadership, believe that it’s fair since we opened up all aspects of the military to women that they would also be registering for Selective Services,â€? said Sen. NO FITNESS CHANGES FOR TRANSGENDER SAILORS Navy lays out guide for gender transition
reviewed and heeded. During transition, some missions may be off-limits for sailors. “The Navy’s bureau of Medicine is studying the effects of medical treatments associated with gender transition on members of the aviation and diving communities, officials with Naval Personnel Command said in a statement. Gender transition is only complete after a military doctor documents that the service member has completed required medical treatments and written permission from the commanding officer to change the official gender marker in the appropriate personnel administrative systems. While Defense Department guidance says no sailor may be kicked out of the service on the basis of being transgender, sailors are advised to consider the needs of the service when choosing how and when to transition. Transition should be completed during one tour of duty to avoid interrupting medical treatment and requiring additional coordination and a new transition plan, which may disrupt operational requirements at a new command. And transition during boot camp or service academy training is not advised. As a result of transgender sailors being permitted to serve openly, the entire fleet may get a little more modest. Nudity in berthing and shower facilities is out, according to the guidance, and sailors must maintain a “minimum standard of coverage walking through spaces, while sleeping, and while using bathrooms and washrooms, in order to show courtesy for others and maintain good order and discipline, according to the guidance. Unit commanders are prohibited from creating exclusive berthing or bathroom facilities for transgender sailors, but are expected to use their discretion to enact appropriate policies to ensure the protection of privacy for individual sailors.
A new 12-page handbook released by the Navy describes in detail when and how a sailor can complete a gender transition, down to how transgender sailors can participate in urinalysis tests and when it is appropriate to wear clothing of a preferred gender during visits to foreign ports. The guidance also contains a caution for sailors hoping to transition: they will be expected to pass the physical fitness requirements of their preferred gender immediately on transition, and are expected to take the initiative to train to those standards in advance. As of Oct. 1, sailors were allowed to Screen grab from video highlighting changes to Navy PFA (Navy Video) begin the process to change their official gender designation in personnel systems treatment plan, then must be reported to der transition is complete and their official in accordance with a Pentagon mandate. the appropriate unit commanding officer gender has been changes in the personnel Beginning this month, the Navy will dis- to for approval of the timing of medical enrollment system, but must do so only in patch mobile training teams to all major treatment, taking into consideration when off-duty status, according to the guidance. commands to explain the new policies the sailor will rotate to another command, All official unit functions, on-base or off, are and what they mean for the fleet. is such an interesting process. Plus, there is the fact that such a big studio like AMC behind you means you have to really find the right people. I think they wanted to be thorough in their search. all in one. You are going to see a lot more of influences in season two. They are loosely throwing around the steam punk vibe, which I think is pretty awesome. It is such a mixture of so many different genres, and that makes it a completely different show all together. Then you throw in the martial arts, which hasn’t been done since the 1980s in television. To do it at the level we are doing it is pretty incredible. Throughout it all, with the fight scenes, which are arguably harder if not actually harder than the drama, I would say it is really something that is new. I would also say, that it’s something that has to be experienced. I definitely understand why this hasn’t been done before, because it can be a difficult process to incorporate all of what is in the show. JJ: Speaking of all the martial arts, I happen to be a fan of the genre and more recently because of the expanse in story-

to survive this world he lives in. The first season, he didn’t have much control, and in season two he learns how to have that control. In season one, he hasn’t learned how to control his powers, his destiny — nothing about his life. It is really something he strives for. You obviously have the M.K. angst that is kind of funny and so lovable, so I’m excited for everyone to see M.K. grow. JJ: I know I’m excited to see where your character goes. In season one, you are leading where everyone wants you to go, so I see a breaking out coming. AK: Yes, a new character is introduced named Eva, who M.K. develops a special relationship with and they have a great story line. I think everybody will really enjoy that. JJ: I tried last night to explain to someone who hadn’t seen the show what it is about. If you were in the same situation, how would you describe “Into the Badlands?
AK: I would call it a post-apocalyptic, utopian, martial arts drama. I would also say that it has some of the most vivid coloring and best cinematography in television. You wouldn’t expect anything less from AMC, knowing “The Walking Dead and “Breaking Bad and “Mad Men, that also have this rich cinematography and deep story telling. If you are looking for quality, badass television, then this is the show to be watching. The first season of “Into the Badlands is coming to Blu-ray and Digital HD, and prepare for the second season with Aramis Knight as M.K. to bring even more intrigue, mystery and survival! Not bad for government work
There were two guys working for the city. One would dig a hole — he would dig, dig, dig. The other would come behind him and fill the hole — fill, fill, fill. These two men worked furiously; one digging a hole, the other filling it up again. A man was watching from the sidewalk and couldn’t believe how hard these men were working, but couldn’t understand what they were doing. Finally he had to ask them. He said to the hole digger, “I appreciate how hard you work, but what are you doing? You dig a hole and your partner comes behind you and fills it up again! beginning, only to root and care for them by the ending. “No Man’s Land is an edge-of-yourseat thriller. Readers will be hooked from page one. Besides the tension-edged plot, the thought-provoking themes will allow people to question how far military experiments should go. A Q and A with the author follows: Elise Cooper: Many of your books have a shout out to the military. David Baldacci: My dad was in the Navy, and I have a lot of friends in the military and police. I think those in the military and police are very special people, which is why I wrote this book quote about Puller a former combat veteran and now a CID investigator, sprinting “toward, not away from, the violence. I have tremendous respect for them. It is an incredibly difficult job under the best of circumstances and far more complicated than people realize. We need to hold these people up and encourage them to serve in these professions. EC: DARPA, the Department of Defense’s research arm on emerging technologies, plays a large role in this book. Please explain. DB: It is an interesting agency. My super soldier theme is not all fiction, since they have worked on it for a long time. A lot of what I spoke about in the book is something they have been, or are currently, working on, including brain implants and making soldiers able to heal themselves on the battlefield. I think one of their long-range goals is to make our fighting force more effective. I know this sounds very H. G. Wells, but it is the way the world works. EC: Your character Paul Rodgers seems to be a guinea pig to the scientists. DB: A friend of mine who is in the military told me it is all about the mission, and personal safety does not come into the equation. I guess guinea pigs are necessary to move the mission forward. I wanted to attack this from the human side, and the dark side of it all. At some point this has to be tested on real people. Their goal is to make the soldier more efficient, more combat ready, stronger and with greater endurance. A lot
David Baldacci’s newest novel, “No Man’s Land, is filled with thought-provoking themes.
of this can only happen with technology. Is it a dark or sweet part? General Robert E. Lee said, “It is well that war is so terrible — otherwise we would grow too fond of it. We don’t want to possibly change a person to being non-human. I am not saying to stop the projects, but we must be skeptical and ask the necessary questions about modifying soldiers. We must be aware that technology and humanism sometimes collide. EC: It was interesting how you were able to change Rodgers from a psychopath to a sympathetic figure. DB: It was quite a challenge. I started off with this guy who seemed like a monster, who has killed people. Then I chipped away at the reader’s perception of him. I tried to do it scene-by-scene, paragraphby-paragraph, word-by-word and actionby-action. I hoped to peel away layers of this monster to show someone abused and modified. It was a unique challenge to get people to care for this guy over the course of the book. EC: Is this a conspiracy theory book? DB: I wanted to explore different questions. Where do all the dollars go that fund DARPA? Who is behind the scenes controlling it? Are they higher-ups that can never be touched? Are these geo-political

players who try to benefit themselves? EC: You seem to enjoy writing stories where the brain is affected. DB: Yes. I think about how the brain defines personality, who someone is and how they react to others. When modified, changed and pierced by artificial means, the outcome is very scary. Putting something together that is supposedly perfect is only in the eyes of the beholder. It’s their definition of what is perfect. Let’s not forget Hitler’s desire to create the
perfect Aryan race. But, I also wrote in this book about how Puller’s father is suffering from dementia, and he felt how he basically lost him. It destroys people from within. EC: You continue that theme with the backstory on John Puller DB: Yes. In the first three Puller books I gave little teasers. In this book I was able to go back and allow him to see his childhood through his own eyes. I hoped to humanize him and deepen his character. I showed how human beings memories are a funny thing. John could not remember some things from his childhood that his brother, Robert, had. We tend to embellish, de-emphasize or banish to the dark corners of our memory different thoughts. His childhood memories were muddled. EC: Even with your Amos Decker series you continue the theme about the affect on our brains. DB: Yes. He is a former NFL player who is unable to forget anything following a helmet-to-helmet crash. This and the concussions affected him. For me, it is now difficult to watch this sport, because I am thinking about how their brains will be gone. EC: Can you give a heads up about your next book? DB: It will be an Amos Decker story called “The Fix, out in April. He takes on a case in Washington, D.C., where he was a witness. It is a clash between him and the inner workings of Washington, D.C. I enjoy writing fiction that is based on realism and can be thought provoking.
