ACROSS ARC OF CONFLICT, ‘OBAMA DOCTRINE’ SHOWS SIGNS OF FAILURE By Matt Spetalnick & Phil Stewart Reuters

n Syria, U.S.-trained rebels surrender supplies and ammunition to al Qaeda-linked insurgents. In Iraq, the battle by American-backed government forces against Islamic State is at a stalemate. In Afghanistan, the Taliban seize a provincial capital for the first time since their ouster in 2001. Less than a year and a half after President Barack Obama used a West Point speech to lay out a strategy for relying on local partners instead of large-scale U.S. military deployments abroad, there is mounting evidence that the so-called “Obama Doctrine may be failing. Despite the U.S. investment of at least an estimated $90 billion in these counter-terrorism efforts, Obama has found few reliable allies to carry the load on the battlefield - and he seems to have few good options to fix the situation. Obama also appears hemmed in by his deep aversion to seeing America drawn back into unpopular Middle East wars after pulling U.S. forces out of Iraq in 2011. Russia’s sudden moves to seize the initiative in the Syria and Iraq crises in recent weeks have stunned U.S. officials and laid bare the erosion of Washington’s influence in the region. Faced by the mounting setbacks, Obama will probably only make modest changes in strategy, according to current and former U.S. officials. That strongly suggests that Obama will leave some of the world’s most intractable conflicts to his successor when he leaves office in January 2017. “Things aren’t looking good in these places and they’re not getting get much

better anytime soon, said Douglas Ollivant, former senior U.S. National Security Council official on Iraq for Obama and his predecessor George W. Bush. “That’s the problem of working through partners. They’re not always capable. Options could include stepping up support for Kurdish fighters in Syria, cooperation with Russia to seek an end to the conflict there, and a slowdown of the planned U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. The administration is also weighing a proposal to scale back its failed $580 million program to train Syrian rebels to battle Islamic State, U.S. officials said. The Obama doctrine has floundered partly due to weak national governance in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the failure of moderate Syrian opposition groups to overcome their rivalries. Still, many critics put the blame squarely on Obama for what they see as an overly cautious approach that has FAILURE, continued on Page 15

‘SEALS VS. ZOMBIES’ ATTACKS ON BLURAY Jeri Jacquin MilitaryPress Anchor Bay brings an action thriller from director Stanton Barrett with “Navy SEALs vs. Zombies to Bluray, DVD and Digital HD. President Bentley stops on the campaign trail in Louisiana to give a quick speech. His team is assigned outside the building when they notice something odd. People are coming there way in a slow, rather creepy walk. Everyone quickly gets to the building where the president spoke and goes into lockdown. When communications become a problem, the government sends the Navy SEALs to the rescue. The dead are taking over fast, which means the SEALs must act quickly. The undead are munching on
everything in their path. This is a mission like no other! The cast includes Stephanie Honore, Ed Quinn, Sue-Lynn Ansari, Michael Dudikoff, Molly Hagan, Mikal Vega, Lolo Jones, Charlie Talbert, Kevin Kent, Judd Lormand, Damon Lipari, Dwight Henry, Jackie Becker Mickeal K. Douglas and Rick Fox as the president. TUBS OF POPCORN: I give “Navy SEALs vs. Zombies three tubs of popcorn out of five. Of coursed it’s a zombie movie, so I’m going to stand behind that if nothing else. I love good, bad or indifferent zombie movies. The storyline is a little hokey but I don’t have a problem with that. I love to see the special effects of the zombies because each artist in this genre sees the undead differently. It interests me to see if they will be moving fast or slow
and, more importantly, do they have any table manners — just kidding. The SEALs have no problem coming in and doing what they do best, eliminating the danger and saving civilians — sometimes from themselves. Of course, I wish civilians would listen more when told to RUN so just know if there ever was a zombie situation, if you are a SEAL who is trying to protect me and you tell me to RUN, it will be done tootsweet! The zombie genre has a following all its own, and they are dedicated to their love of the undead stories. “Navy SEALs vs. Zombies will quickly be added to that section of the home media library. In the end — it’s lock and load on the living dead! For more information on films and television visit moviemaven.homestead.com.

Taylor Swift earned six American Music Awards nominations, and if she wins everything she’s up for, the singer will become the most-honored female artist in the show’s history. Ed Sheeran and the Weeknd had five nominations each, trying to win their first awards. Sam Hunt, Nicki Minaj, Sam Smith, Meghan Trainor and Walk the Moon had three nominations each. Swift was one of 10 nominees for artist of the year, and her “Blank Space was nominated for song of the year. She was also nominated for collaboration of the year for her work on “Bad Blood with Kendrick Lamar, and her blockbuster “1989 is competing for album of the year. She’s won 16 American Music Awards. Whitney Houston’s 21 awards are the most ever among female artists in the show, which was launched in 1974. Michael Jackson’s 24 awards are the most of any artist. Nominations, announced Tuesday, are based on a metric that includes sales, airplay and social activity tracked by Billboard magazine and its partners. Winners are determined by fan votes on the show’s website or through Facebook and Twitter. Swift, Sheeran, the Weeknd, Minaj, Trainor, Smith, Luke Bryan, Ariana Grande, Maroon 5 and One Direction are artist of the year nominees. The nomination list will be narrowed to five by Nov. 11 through fan votes. Jennifer Lopez will host the show, which will air live Nov. 22 from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on ABC. Besides “Blank Space, song of the year nominees are “See You Again by Wiz Khalifa featuring Charlie Puth; “Uptown Funk! by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars; “Thinking out Loud by Sheeran; and “Can’t Feel My Face by the Weeknd. Sheeran’s “x’’ and Smith’s “In the Lonely Hour join “1989 in the competition for best album. New artist nominees are Hunt, Fetty Wap, Tove Lo, Walk the Moon and the Weeknd. Enrique Iglesias has the chance to win his seventh favorite artist award in the Latin category, while both Beyonce and Rihanna have the chance to become the record holder in the favorite female soul artist. They’ve both won the category four times, along with Aretha Franklin and Mariah Carey.

‘Playboy’ to drop nudes Opening a copy of Playboy magazine on an airplane or at a hair salon may no longer have people raising their eyebrows. Playboy will no longer publish images of fully nude women in its magazine beginning this spring. The move comes as part of a redesign that will be unveiled next March, Playboy Enterprises, Inc., announced Tuesday. The magazine will still feature women in provocative poses, but they will no longer bare all when the March issue is released in February, according to a statement from Playboy. The onslaught of Internet pornography has made the nude images in Playboy “passĂŠ,â€? Scott Flanders, the company’s chief executive, told the New York Times. “That battle has been fought and won,â€? Flanders told the newspaper. “You’re now one click away from every sex act imaginable for free.â€? The new Playboy will continue to aim for a target audience of millennials between the ages of 18 and 30-something. The move to robe the magazine’s Playmates is similar to Playboy’s digital strategy over the last few years. In 2013, the Playboy app was touted as a more work-friendly version of the magazine with “best articlesâ€? and non-nude images. Likewise, a 2015 app implemented the same strategy with a mobile-first focus on the magazine’s written content. When Playboy.com re-launched sans
nudity in 2015, the publication said in a statement that “tens of millions of readers continued to come to the “non-nude website and app every month for, yes, photos of beautiful women, but also for articles and videos from our humor, sex and culture ... sections. Since launching the new site, the median age of visitors has “shrunk from 47 to 30-years of age, according to the company. While publishing has ebbed and flowed throughout the magazine’s lifetime, as with most print publications numbers have steadily declined over the past few decades. According to Alliance for Audited Media, the magazine sold 5.6 million in 1975 and has dropped to about 800,000 today, the Times reported. The first issue of Playboy was published in 1953, and featured Marilyn Monroe on the cover. The centerfolds in the magazine have been a sort of rite-of-passage for many young men, and the company notes that it may be a “risk to go “non-nude. “This is a company ... that has risk in its DNA ... Our journalism, art, photos and fiction have challenged norms, defied expectations and set a new tone for decades. So we say: Why stop now, Playboy staff wrote in an online post. On social media, many questioned the move away from publishing photos of nude women. Others noted that those who have said they only read the magazine for “the articles, will now be telling the truth.

Kazakhstan just being that much better than the rest of his field. It’s not just his two-fisted firepower, but his knockout intentions coupled with his all-around skillset that has led to worldwide success. Golovkin racked up nearly 350 amateur wins, an amazing run highlighted by nabbing an Olympic Silver medal in the 2004 Athens Games (ironically, that he claimed silver actually represents a rare loss he endured in the amateur ranks). Through 33 fights as a pro, he shows no signs of slowing down and in fact improving every day under the tutelage of Abel Sanchez. Conversely, Lemieux is still (and perhaps unfairly) cast as a free-swinging puncher from Montreal. However, his current ninefight win streak has shown that he’s more than a one-trick pony. Sure, power punching was key in his building a sizeable lead versus Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam in their vacant title fight this past June. But when the brave Frenchman kept climbing off the deck, Lemieux had to resort to Plan B‌ and C‌ in order to emerge victorious in claiming his first title. “Believe me there is a difference between thinking you want something and knowing that you want it,â€? Lemieux points out. “I know that I want it and am fully aware of how much I am willing to take and how
Even if he boasted the necessary skill set to put on a clinic, David Lemieux has no intention of allowing a boxing match to break out on a night where most are coming to see a fight. It’s the very threat of intense in-ring violence that has aroused public interest surrounding his October 17 middleweight title unification match with Gennady Golovkin. Their bout headlines at a sold-out Madison Square Garden in New York City, with HBO Pay-Per-View to air live (Saturday, $49.95 SRP). “You know this is a fight that people wanted to see. The fans and the world want to see this fight because they know it will be a war, Lemieux (34-2, 31KOs) firmly believes. “In war there is pain; if you accept that and decide to go in there, it means you made up your mind that through thick and thin. You will pay the price that needs to be paid. “I believe it is a night that there will be blood, there will be pain and suffering and at the end of the day the winner is the one that wants it most. Perhaps it can be argued that Golovkin (33-0, 30KOs) has simply ‘wanted it’ a hell of a lot more than any of his opponents to date. Even among his past opponents who didn’t give up until the bitter end, there’s the LEMIEUX, continued on Page 17 issue of the unbeaten knockout artist from 'PS BEWFSUJTJOH JOGPSNBUJPO DBMM t BEWFSUJTJOH!NJMJUBSZQSFTT DPN

We need a president that truly believes we are freedom’s defender. Cheney, a former deputy assistant secretary of state, and her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, take readers on a historical journey while pointing out how President Barack Obama’s policies have weakened this nation in their new book, “Exceptional: Why The World Needs A Powerful America. From Presidents Franklin Roosevelt through George W. Women will likely have to register for the draft, Army secretary says Women will eventually have to register for the draft if “true and pure equality is to be realized in the U.S. military, Army Secretary John McHugh said Monday. “If your objective is true and pure equality then yoau have to look at all aspects of the roles of women in the military, McHugh said, and registration for the draft “will be one of those things. That will have to be considered. McHugh said draft registration was not a subject to be decided by the services or the Department of Defense, and will ultimately have to be dealt with by Congress. He expected a “pretty emotional debate and discussion. However, as more military occupational specialties are opened to women, the debate on Selective Service System registration was inevitable, McHugh said. “If we find ourselves as a military writ large where men and women have equal opportunity, as I believe we should, he said. The question on women and the draft was posed to McHugh and Gen. Mark Milley, the new Army chief of staff, at the annual three-day meeting and exposition of the Association of the U.S. Army at the Walter E. Washington convention center in Washington, D.C. Milley deferred the
question to McHugh, saying he could not comment on policy. The subjectt was a topic of debate at an Aspen National Security forum in Colorado this summer. In one panel discussion, retired Navy Adm. Eric Olson, former commander of the SEALs and the Special Operations Command, said that women should have to register for the draft if they also can serve in combat. Air Force Secretary Deborah James said that she would have no problem with women registering for the draft. Proposals to abolish the Selective Service System as a relic of the era before the all-volunteer force of the early 1970s occasionally come before Congress, but the proposals have never gained traction. Nearly 17 million male U.S. citizens and male immigrant non-citizens between the ages of 18 and 25 currently are registered for conscription with the Selective Service System, an independent government agency. The 18-25 males are required by law to have registered within 30 days of their 18th birthdays and must notify Selective Service within 10 days of any changes to information they provided on their registration cards, such as a change of address. Violations can be considered felonies.

awn Blitz is a multi-national exercise that takes place every other year, at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton and in the waters of the Pacific Ocean offshore from the base. This year’s exercise took place in the early weeks of September and participating was the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, an Army unit from New Zealand, Japanese Naval Vessels with their air assets, and for the first time, Mexican Naval vessels and air assets, along with a company of Mexican Naval Infantry (Marines). The exercise also bring’s many observers from other countries each year, especially from our South American allies such as Columbia, Chile and Peru. The forces practice naval combat and familiarizing each other with the different countries capabilities, and then on land, the troops will use the various ranges, such a combat towns, small arms, and others. The US Marines and Navy use their well known inventory of aircraft, from MV-22 “Ospreys, SH & MH-60’s “Sea Hawks and CH-53 “Super Sea Stallions, while the Japanese bring their CH-47 “Chinooks & SH-60 “Romeos. In 2013, the Japanese also had onboard their ship, an Apache “AH-64DJP, but it was not seen this time. The first time participant, Mexico brought along a Russian-made Mi-17 “HIP, and a Eurocopter AS565 Panther. On the 3 days that I spent with the exercise, I flew onboard a US Marine MV-22 out to the USS Boxer for a media meeting with the “Flag officers of the exercise, to explain the mission of this exercise. I won’t bore you with the facts, but right now the Pentagon is focusing on issues in the Yellow and east China Seas, and the defense of our allies in that region. Some believe that Communist China is
8 0DU
playing a game to get our attention on this region, when their real focus is really on invading Taiwan, but that’s for another story, some other day. After that we meeting, I reboarded the “Osprey, and flew to the Japanese Self Defense Force ship, the “Hyuga, a submarine destroyer officially, but really an small carrier that can carry troops and helicopters, much like the “Boxer. This was my second time onboard this ship, and was able to observe their various helicopters flying to and from her flight deck. After the demonstration, I was flown back to shore for the end of the day. After watching amphibious landings on the beaches of camp Pendleton of the Mexican Naval Infantry in their assault boats, and the New Zealanders, making their landing in US Marine Amphibious Assault Vehicles (AAV’s), I could hear a strange thumping of helicopter blades coming from the north, but it’s sound was different from any US type helo. Suddenly, the Mi-17 and the Panther came into view as the Mexican Navy was flying troops inland from their two ships out to sea. The very next day, I found myself waiting for the arrival of those two helicopters, as they would transport me out to the Mexican naval vessels, the ARM Revolucion and the ARM Usumacinta. Now I will say this, I have flown on UH-1’s CH-46’s, CH-53’s, and MV-22’s, and there is always a little bit of shaking going on, but when I flew in the “HIP’, it was more of a bouncing type of flight, just a constant up and down bounce. The Mexican military personnel that I met that day were extremely professional, and a pleasure to meet and greet, and to see their ships and aircraft. On the way, back to shore, the pilot of “HIP gave me the opportunity to be able to take images of the ships at sea, but also some air to air of the “Panther, flying along side.

Gitmo’s funniest detainee is single and ready to mingle Ladies, a high-value al-Qaeda detainee at the U.S. prison facility in Guantanamo Bay is looking for love. Check out his profile on Match.com, because he can’t get on Tinder from his cell and Plenty of Fish asks too many questions. “This is terrible news about Ashley Madison, he writes. “Please remove my profile immediately!!! I’ll stick with Match. com, even though you say it is for old people. There is no way I can get Tinder in here. Muhammad Rahim al-Afghani was captured in Pakistan in 2007 and held by the CIA before his transfer to the prison. He keeps a robust sense of humor despite being tortured while detained by the CIA. Afghani actually does maintain a Match.com profile and comments on the latest news, trends, and pop culture in the United States through letters to his lawyer. “Donald Trump is an idiot!!! Sen. McAin [sic]is a war hero. Trump is a war zero, he wrote in a letter acquired by Al-Jazeera. “He bankrupted the USFL, and now he wants to bankrupt the U.S. At this rate, Hillary has a chance. Afghani was the last prisoner sent to Guantanamo Bay, arriving in March 2008. He has access to news, magazines, and international television inside the facility. Referring to Caitlyn Jenner, the transgender reality personality who caused an online stir when she received ESPN’s
Arthur Ashe Courage Award, he said he is “happy for her because people are born how they are. He did question her political views, however. “How is she a Republican? They want to take her rights away. He had one bit of advice for Ms. Jenner: “Tell her to use spray tan for her legs. Afghani has never been charged with a crime. Retired General and former CIA director Michael Hayden says Aghani is detained because of his past and his continued threat to American interests. Afghani believes his high-value status comes because he was tortured in custody. He was sleep deprived for 138 hours in 2007, standing while wearing a diaper, and given only liquid ensure to eat. He advised his civilian lawyer, Carlos Warner, a federal public defender, to take Obama “straight to the post if he ever had the chance to play with the President. Afghani is an avid basketball and Cavaliers fan. He is happy about LeBron’s return to Cleveland. “Miami is a good place to visit, but no one wants to live there. It’s too greasy and hot. But I feel this way: As the great Bret Michaels once said — ‘Although the wound heals, the
scar Remains!!! While Afghani has access to news, the events he discusses may not always be current. Afghani once asked Warner if he could do the Gangnam Style dance for him, but needed some help first. “I like this new song ‘Gangnam Style,’ he wrote. “I want to do the dance for you but cannot because of my shackles. Please ask to have this changed. In all seriousness, he repeats the need for a military lawyer, which may be why he
enjoys displaying his knowledge of American popular culture, in an effort to stay relevant. “Give me a trial. Let me be free, he wrote to his civilian lawyer. Afghani request a military lawyer “How can I get justice without a military lawyer? He had a military lawyer but that lawyer retired and was not replaced. When wikileaks released documents about the detainees left in Guantanamo, there were none about Afghani. Afghani will likely be rejected by ChristianMingle and eHarmony.

HIGH HITLER: A LOOK INTO THE MEGALOMANIAC’S ADDICTION A By Andrea Maurer Guernica Magazine
t the end, when he was already hiding in his wet and dark Fuhrerbunker and his beloved Eukodal was no longer available, the dictator was in a frail state. He had lost his teeth, he was drooling and he was hallucinating. Hitler, the man who believed in what he called the “Aryan master race, had ended up a junkie. In Der totale Rausch: Drogen im Dritten Reich (The Total Rush: Drugs in the Third Reich), author Norman Ohler attributes the downfall of Hitler to drugs, primarily Eukodal, a preform of heroin. From time to time, the veins of the pure vegetarian also contained the anabolic steroids of pigs. And his “dealer was none other than his personal doctor, Theodor Morell. In the book that is shaking up the history of the Third Reich, Ohler explains that several high-ranking Nazis were addicted to opioid drugs, while civilians and frontline soldiers took Pervitin, a pill form of Crystal Meth. Before the Final Battle of World War II, the Nazis were in search of a miracle drug to transform “men into predators, Ohler writes, quoting Gerhard Orzechowski, a leading pharmacologist of the Navy. According to the book, the Third Reich was a reigning Drug Empire; “This book changes the overall view of the Nazi regime, German historian Hans Mommsen echoes in the Epilogue, “this dimension of the Nazi Regime has not been adequately taken into consideration. Until now — but what motivated Ohler to do so? “I have a good friend, a Berlin underground DJ, who told me once that the Nazis took loads of drugs. I couldn’t believe it, Ohler an award-winning German journalist and novelist told me over the phone last week. From 2009 to 2014, he conducted research in the Federal Archive of Koblenz,
“The Total Rush: Drugs in the Third Reich details Adolf Hitlers drug addiciton. in the Military Archive of Freiburg, and in Washington, DC. He also analyzed Dr. Morell’s personal records, whose role in Hitler’s life has been largely ignored by historians. “A lot of historians thought working on the personal doctor of Hitler was a yellow press topic, Ohler said, referring to tabloid journalism. He pointed out that Dr. Morell’s notes have also been profoundly misunderstood: “After World War II, the Americans who captured Morell translated the word ‘Eukodal’ as ‘Enkodal.’ They thought it was a legitimate medical treatment and dosage. Ohler kept digging, and found people who had used Eukodal. He included their testimony in his narrative — “People felt like they always wanted to: splendid, completely calm, clearheaded; it was a golden feeling — to illustrate how this pharmaceutical cousin of heroin would have been “a perfect drug for the Fuhrer.
Ohler’s book opens in the 1920’s when the Nazis began campaigning against cocaine and morphine in the Weimar Republic. The self-appointed ‘Masters of Universe’ condemned drug abuse as “Jewish, and when they came to power, deported drug addicts to concentration camps. The real “Aryan German was supposed to be strong and awake. Hitler pretended to be the role model: abstinent, ascetic, and ardently vegetarian. “But the change of power only meant a change of substances, Ohler reveals. A pharmaceutical company in East Berlin, Temmler Werke, invented a new pill for the meritocracy of the Nazis: Pervitin, a methamphetamine, and predecessor of what we know today as Crystal Meth. In 1937, they patented it, and advertised it to everyone, even as bonbons to housewives: “Just one pill keeps you alert for hours. Self-confi-

dence increases and doubts disappear, they promised. “People were euphoric, Ohler says. Pervitin created “a mood that matched the mood before the war. In 1939, Hitler’s soldiers brought Pervitin into the battlefields. Spiegel Magazine first reported on this in 2005, and Ohler elaborates in his book. The military physiologist Otto Ranke evaluated Pervitin as “a substance that is very valuable for war. In 1940, before attacking France, the German army ordered 35 million tablets of Pervitin for its soldiers. Doped up tank drivers stayed on the move until engines stopped; troops marched day and night without a break. Ohler claims that the Blitzkrieg was “led by methamphetamine. Pervitin was probably the only drug that Hitler did not try. “He was more the type for opioid drugs, Ohler says. In 1936 Hitler met Theodor Morell in Munich, who, until then had run a successful practice in Berlin’s Kurfurstendamm. He “mastered the injections like no one else and became the Fuhrer’s personal doctor — as well as his dealer. Years later, Dr. Morell boasted that he was “the only one who had seen the Fuhrer every day since 1936. In Morell’s records, the intimidating dictator was referred to simply as “patient A. “Dr. Morell held a very strong position within the Nazi Regime, Ohler says. “From Josef Goebbels to Alfred Speer, every important Nazi went to Dr. Morell for various injections. Being treated by him earned you Hitler’s trust. If you didn’t go to him, you could immediately fall into Hitler’s disgrace. In 1941, Hitler felt sick. He had fever, diarrhea and pain in the limbs, and Dr. Morell didn’t know how to help him. He created a cocktail of vitamins and pigmade anabolic steroids — “behaving like a doping doctor, Ohler says. Morell even set up a steroid manufacturing plant in the Ukraine, and became what Ohler calls

CHENEYS Continued from Page 6 to an issue of leadership. As we quote in the book, President Ronald Reagan said, ‘It is up to us in our time to choose, and choose wisely, between the hard but necessary task of preserving peace and freedom, and the temptation to ignore our duty and blindly hope for the best while the enemies of freedom grow stronger day by day.’â€? Part II explains how President Obama’s policies have made America less safe, citing ISIS, Russia, China, Iran and North Korea. This part is especially relevant since they speak about the Iranian nuclear deal. “The president has tried to sell this bad deal by claiming that there is no alternative, save war,â€? they write. “In fact, this agreement makes war more, not less, likely‌ In addition to accelerating the spread of nuclear weapons across the Middle East, it will provide the Iranians with hundreds of billions of dollars in sanctions relief, which even the Obama administration admits likely will be used to fund terror.â€? The Cheneys criticize inadequate verifications for inspections of Iran’s nuclear sites, the removal of restrictions on Iran’s ballistic missile program and the lifting of sanctions against the regime, which they believe will help Iran fund terror. “President Obama believes the U.S. is a maligned force in the world, a force for ill,â€? Liz Cheney said. “He tries to do anything possible to minimize our impact in the world and to limit our engagement/ involvement. Look at the Iranian nuclear

deal that will basically give the Iranians a path for a nuclear arsenal. The vice president added, “He has taken us down a very dangerous road by making a deal with Iran, the world’s greatest sponsor of terrorism. Part III is the most interesting part of the book. The Cheneys make recommendations on how to use America’s power against its enemies. This path restores America as the world’s leader that includes rebuilding the military, negotiating with our adversaries out of a position of strength, and working closely with our allies. “My dad and an awful lot of Americans served in WWII. They look back on their service with pride, the vice president said. “Today, President Obama has sent a tremendous signal to friends and adversaries of weakness and our inability to influence events in the world. For example, when America withdrew from the Middle East the Iranians, ISIS and Russia, all our adversaries, filled the void. He has decimated our military capabilities in the face of rising threats. “I can’t think of a time in history, in our history, when we’ve seen such rising threats: ISIS in the Middle East, creator of a
caliphate, China on the march in the South China Sea, Putin in Europe, we see threats rise, yet the president is consciously and obviously doing whatever he can to reduce our military capabilities. The military has been very sadly neglected, especially in the strategic systems. The damage to the defense department will take years to be built up. “What really bugs me is Barack Obama has taken away a future president’s ability to play defender, he added. “I remember after Desert Storm one of the first things I did was call Ronald Reagan and thank him for having a magnificent military force that
helped us to wrap things up in a very short order. Now we will have future presidents that will look back and tear their hair out because of the damage done to the military. “But I am hopeful because of all the good candidates on the Republican side. A number of them have been very clear about their understanding of what it will take to return American power and influence across the globe. “Exceptional: Why The World Needs A Powerful America is a must read. Unlike many authors, the Cheneys actually make clear and concise recommendations of what future presidents need to accomplish. Through the historical journey readers will understand why the authors criticism of the current president is valid. They make the excellent point that to safeguard America, presidents must “speak softly, but carry a big stick. As they said in the book, “Without our armed forces, there would be no liberty. They are the ultimate guarantor and protector of our freedoms.

‘SERIAL’ EYES BERGDAHL FOR NEXT SEASON Soldiers say they’ve been interviewed by popular show’s host
M The popular podcast “Serial is reportedly interviewing soldiers who served with Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl for its second season. interviewing witnesses whose testimonies were never heard in court, and pursuing other leads abandoned during the investigation that led to Syed’s conviction. The podcast ignited a campaign to reopen the case, and three weeks after the show concluded, Syed was granted an appeal. If Bergdahl is indeed the subject an upcoming season (the second premieres this fall; the third, in spring 2016) we can expect plenty of the courtroom drama that made the first so great. A preliminary hearing for Bergdahl’s case was held at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, to determine if the former POW will be tried in a court-martial. According to someone present at the hearing, Serial host Sarah Koenig and at least one of the show’s producers were in spotted in the courtroom. Maxim also spoke with two former
members of Bergdahl’s unit in Afghanistan who say they have been interviewed by Serial producers. Both seemed to doubt Koenig’s ability to cover this extremely controversial tale without bias. “Anyone who tries to benefit from Bowe’s situation has little interest in the truth, one said, asking to be quoted anonymously. “What happened in 2009 is both troubling and politically incorrect...my concern is that the truth is being diluted by those looking to gain from Bowe’s story. The other, who also requested anonymity, was more blunt: “I get it that Boal wants to make a movie and Serial is trying to make a nifty diorama for hipsters to marvel at, but I think it’s the height of crassness for them to do this when it could potentially affect the legal proceedings... I assume it will be a great way to paint us as kooks and sore losers.

Prepare for the loss of a spouse
By Matthew Farewell Maxim Serial fans, you heard it here first: according to several anonymous sources, one of the two upcoming seasons of the wildly popular podcast will focus on the infamous case of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, the U.S. soldier who disappeared from his post in eastern Afghanistan under mysterious circumstances back in 2009. Bergdahl was held prisoner by the Haqqani network, a Taliban-allied guerilla insurgent group, until he was released in exchange for five Guantanamo Bay detainees in May 2014. Bergdahl claims that he was abducted by the insurgents after intentionally walking off his outpost. His goal, he says, was to cause a scene that would ultimately draw attention to conditions in his unit that he found troubling, as the late Michael Hastings and I first reported in 2012. However, this story contradicts accounts from multiple soldiers who served with Bergdahl in Afghanistan. They are convinced his reasons for leaving the outpost were far less honorable. Bergdahl was eventually charged with both desertion and misbehavior before the enemy, which carries a potential life sentence. All of this is ripe material for Serial host Sarah Koenig’s Rashomon approach to investigative journalism, which she deftly applied to the case of Adnan Syed, a man currently serving a life sentence for the 1999 murder of his high school exgirlfriend, Hae Min Lee. Koenig went to great lengths to examine the case from every possible angle—

YOU AND YOUR MONEY
ore than 50 years ago, Donald I. Rogers, the financial editor of a New York newspaper, wrote a book, “Teach Your Wife to be a Widow. Even though more women are working and are financially savvy today, the latest census figures show that one in four women aged 65 to 74 are widows. How many of them were truly prepared to assume the responsibility of managing the savings and investments they now depended on to make up for the sudden loss of income? Did they even know where to start? Explaining financial matters requires patience on everybody’s part. Some “in charge husbands are used to going it alone in their stock market activities, sharing neither their successes nor — especially — their losers. And some wives find the subject boring; they never ask about anything, and don’t want to know. A widow’s first thoughts will not be on money matters at a time when all she can do is grieve. But if she has been named the executor in her husband’s will, she will soon be confronted with a slew of legal and financial duties. And even if she isn’t, she will be asked to provide vital financial information. What does the estate consist of? How many bank or brokerage accounts do they have? Where are they and what’s in them? A husband’s first obligation is to make a list of all such accounts and show his wife where he is putting it. It used to be preferable to keep all financial statements in one place, but these days many monthly statements are electronic. One widow was quoted that “knowing exactly where everything was lightened the burden by 60 to 70 percent. That’s just the first step. Are all the accounts titled in a way to insure a quick and easy transfer into the widow’s name or trust? If a retirement account has stocks, bonds, mutual funds, ETFs, preferred stocks — whatever, she should know what those terms mean, why those particular investments are there and whether they would be suitable for her to retain. Even if an estate is left in a trust for a widow, relieving her of the burden of making investment decisions,

Hitler became a dictator on drugs, a strict vegetarian using animal hormones. “To keep his arm outstretched for the Nazi salute, Hitler did some training with an expander and injected himself full of vitamins, Ohler explains.“ Before each big speech, the Fuhrer indulged in an anabolic syringe to keep him going. But after 1941, Hitler changed. The dictator was reduced to a pale inhabitant of his Bunker. For years this puzzled historians, but Ohler says he has found the reason in Dr. Morell’s notes: “X. The “X that stands for Eukodal; Ohler is sure. Morell has documented 800 injections given to Hitler over 1,340 days, the first in 1943, when the Americans landed in Sicilia and Mussolini, the Duce of Italy, was thinking about canceling his alliance with Hitler. The Fuhrer was unable to travel to Italy because of a heavy stomach pain, so Morell injected a substance that he had avoided until then: Eukodal. A radically high-spirited Hitler convinced the Duce to keep up the alliance — and pledged his own to Eukodal. Stauffenberg’s assassination attempt in 1944 wounded Hitler more deeply than he let on, and he needed his dealer-doctor more than ever. He implored Dr. Morell for Eukodal. By winter of that year, Hitler had “long known no more sober days, Ohler writes. Worse, “Morell’s supplies were dwindling, and on April 17, 1945, a frenzied Hitler threatened to shoot Dr. Morell. The doctor fled, but was caught by the Americans and intensively interrogated. He died in Munich two years later, a victim of mental illness. Before what would become the Final Battle of World War II, the German military started to look for a miracle drug to rally their troops once again. Gerhard Orzechowksi combined Eukodal, Cocaine, Pervitin and Dicodid to create DIX, the strongest substance in the world. But the soldiers who tried it immediately fell sick: paralysis, sweating, dizziness. The Navy administered it in spite of these reactions, and “the mission became a fiasco. The SS continued looking for a miracle drug, making sure to test it in concentration camps this time. They developed a bubble gum form of pure cocaine that users could actually chew. “Despite hunger and bad constitution the concentration camp prisoners mutated into real marching machines, writes Ohler. The search for a wonder drug had been turned into perverted human experiments. What does this mean for Hitler? “The drugs probably offered Hitler the option to stay in the state of delusion he needed to commit such evil crimes, but there is still no excuse. “I believe in the principle ‘actio libera in causa’ — whoever planned a crime is guilty of it. There is no doubt about Hitler’s guilt; he planned the mass murder of six million people well before he began using drugs. The “total rush, the loss of reality and megalomania have always been his state of mind — the state of mind of a vegetarian mass murderer who died a sickly junkie.

country’s Sunni minority, is still struggling to make headway against Islamic State. The security forces are trying to rebuild after melting away last year in the face of a militant offensive that captured Mosul, the country’s second-largest city. U.S. officials privately have voiced frustration with the pace of Iraqi operations, including preparations for a campaign to retake the Anbar provincial capital of Ramadi, which Islamic State seized in May. U.S. officials have pointed to more positive results from military support given to Kurdish peshmerga forces in Iraq as well as Syrian Kurdish fighters on parts of Syria’s border with Turkey. Another bright spot, they say, is progress made with local partners fighting the violent extremist group Boko Haram in west Africa. However, in Afghanistan, the loss of Kunduz dealt another blow to Obama’s policy and raised questions whether Afghan forces will be able to secure the country on their own, despite the $65 billion invested by Washington to build them up. Critics say a 2016 withdrawal plan may be premature. Some analysts suggested that even though U.S. warplanes had begun bombing Taliban targets in an effort to take back Kunduz, the U.S. military may not have provided enough support early enough, particularly for airlifting in troops. Even if Kunduz is recaptured from the Taliban, “the damage is done, said James Dobbins, Obama’s former Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan and now a senior fellow at the RAND Corp. think tank. “Everybody living there now knows they’re vulnerable.
In the absence of American leadership, the vacuum is going to be filled by bad people.

Poo storm
A bird was flying south for winter, but he had left too late and was frozen solid in a storm. He dropped down into a pasture of cows. The biggest, fattest cow was doing a crap there, and the bird landed in it. At first he was disgusted, until he realized the poo was thawing him out! He started crying out for joy as the ice melted. Beautiful?
A lawyer was just waking up from anesthesia after surgery, and his wife was sitting by his side. His eyes fluttered open and he said, “You’re beautiful! and then he fell asleep again. His wife had never heard him say that so she stayed by his side. A couple of minutes later, his eyes fluttered open and he said, “You’re cute! Well, the wife was dissapointed because instead of “beautiful, it was “cute. She asked, “What happened to ‘beautiful’? His reply was “The drugs are wearing off!
The boss
One day a man goes to a pet shop to buy a parrot. The assistant takes the man to the parrot section and asks the man to choose one. The man asks, ‘’How much is the yellow one?’’ The assistant says, ‘’$2,000.’’ The man is shocked and asks the assistant why it’s so expensive. The assistant explains, ‘’This parrot is a very special one. He knows typewriting and can type really fast.’’ ‘’What about the green one?’’ the man asks. The assistant says, ‘’He costs $5,000 because he knows typewriting and can answer incoming telephone calls and takes 16 0DU
notes.’’ ‘’What about the red one?’’ the man asks. The assistant says, ‘’That one’s $10,000.’’ The man says, ‘’What does HE do?’’ The assistant says, ‘’I don’t know, but the other two call him boss.’’
Blonde cruise
A blonde sees a flier on a bulletin board that reads, “Cruise -- Only $5. She goes to the address on the flier and hands the receptionist $5. The receptionist nods to a burly man reading a newspaper. He walks over to the blonde and knocks her unconscious. The blonde wakes up tied to a log floating down river. To her right, she sees one of her blonde friends. “Do you think they’re going to serve food on this trip? she asks. Her friend replies, “They didn’t last year.
Dumb drunk
A guy walks into a bar and orders a whiskey. Just before he takes a sip of his whiskey, a guy runs in and says, “Bill, your house burnt down! So he runs outside, but then he thinks, “I don’t have a house, so he goes back into the bar and takes a sip of his whiskey. Another guy runs in and says, “Bill! Your dad died! He runs out of the bar, gets on his horse and rides a little ways, but then thinks, “I don’t have a dad, so he goes back into the bar and drinks almost all of his whiskey. Then another guy runs in and says, “Bill! You won the lottery! So he runs out, gets on his horse and rides all the way to the bank, but then he thinks, “My name’s not Bill.
Mad cow concern
A husband and wife go to a restaurant. The waiter approaches the table to take their order. “I’ll have your biggest, juiciest steak, says the husband. “But sir, what about the mad cow? asks the waiter. “Oh, says the husband, “she’ll order for herself.

LEMIEUX Continued from Page 5 much I will have to dish out. Some people can dish it but can’t take it. “Well isn’t that the question mark about Golovkin? We will find out on the 17th and there will be a lot of answers given to the world. I will shock the world. I have been there in the past where I had nothing left in the tank and kept on going. My fight with (Marco Antonio) Rubio, I was never knocked out, in fact, I knocked myself out although it was a technical knockout my corner stopped the fight because they could see at the time that I had nothing left in the tank but I wasn’t going to quit. In a way that is a testament to some of these questions. The win over N’Dam was a far cry from the worst stretch of his career, dropping back-to-back fights in 2011 – including the
aforementioned stoppage loss to Rubio - when he was still a year or so away from coming into his own as a boxer. Improvements have since been made, including his joining forces with top Canadian boxing trainer Marc Ramsey. With such adjustments has also come the confidence that he can overcome any circumstance, something he questions in his upcoming opponent, who quite simply hasn’t yet been forced to prove it. “Does Golovkin have the chin to be able to withstand the onslaught I will be bringing on the 17th? Time will tell but I can tell you one thing, they all have a plan until I hit them in the mouth. I love that phrase that Tyson said because I feel that it really describes what happens to the guys that fight me. This fight will be epic because you have two guys that are ready for war that want to unify four world titles.
MONEY Continued from Page 14 it is important that she understands the basic vocabulary of what the trustee is doing with her money. What her social security benefits may be is another subject that should be investigated beforehand to avoid surprise. A government website, www.aging.gov, can help. A widow left in financial ignorance can be easy prey for a financial adviser whose personal interest may not be consistent with hers. The Bernie Madoffs and other swindlers of the world are often aided by their victims who think they are doing a
favor for a naĂŻve, newly-widowed friend by introducing her to the “wonderfulâ€? swindler who is supposedly making them rich. There have been other books written on this subject since 1953, but the original is still available in libraries and online, and is a good place to start. Or a financial adviser who is selling nothing but advice might be helpful. A retired stockbroker, Norman L. Macht is a personal financial consultant residing in Escondido. Sgt. Ivan Sears
Sears was with the 2-6th Marines in Afghanistan in 2010 when he stepped on an improvised explosive device. “I went into a doorway and actually stepped on a pressure plate, Sears said. He lost both legs below his knees. Sears has served with the Marine Wounded Warrior Detachment on Fort Sam Houston, Texas, for the past five years
and helps in-process new Marines and their families. He began adaptive sports in 2013 and within a year, he was competing at nationals. In his San Antonio apartment, Sears has a roller — a treadmill specifically designed for wheelchair racers. He uses that to train on rainy days when he can’t get to the track. He also trains on an adaptive bike chair. Sears finished the Men’s 100-meter Para Final (Class D) in 16.25 seconds at the Korean Armed Forces Athletic Corps, or KAFAC, stadium. Silver medalist Jacky Patora of the Netherlands finished in 17.95, and bronze medalist Edwin Vermetten of the Netherlands finished in 20.60. “I really just stayed focused ... from the start to the finish, Sears said, adding that he had “tunnel vision on his lane. Later this week he will focus on the men’s para shot put competition.
