LAST SHOT Dan Henderson takes final swing at UFC title By Art Garcia Jr. MilitaryPress

A

fter a long, prestigious, nearly 20-year career, MMA legend Dan Henderson will get one last shot at UFC gold when he faces middleweight champion Michael Bisping at UFC 204, Bisping vs Henderson 2 on Oct. 8 in Manchester, England. Having made his UFC debut at UFC 17 in May 1988, the 46-yearold Henderson was the last Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion and was the last welterweight and middleweight champion of Pride Fighting Championships. In fact, Henderson was the only mixed martial artist to concurrently hold two titles in two different weight classes in a major MMA promotion. Recently, reporter Art Garcia Jr. caught up with the former two-time Olympic wrestler to ask him a few questions about his upcoming UFC title fight. Art Garcia Jr.: Thoughts on your upcoming rematch with Michael Bisping? Dan Henderson: I’m excited about it. The opportunity to get a UFC belt that has been a goal to get for a long time, it’s kind of the last thing I haven’t done in this sport, and to be able to have this opportunity is exciting to me. AG: Ever since he won the belt over Luke Rockhold, Bisping has been telling everybody how much he’s wanted this rematch with you. How much have you wanted it, if at all? DH: I didn’t need a rematch — there was no reason for me to ‌ he had nothing to offer me before. I mean, if he didn’t have the belt it wouldn’t be exciting to me. There’s no way I can duplicate what I did the last time and finish him in quite the phenomenal manner — granted I’ll definitely try to do that again and hopefully I can give that to the fans again. I’m not counting on doing that again, but I am counting on beating him. AG: A knockout is like baseball where if you come up to bat just swinging for a home run you’re likely to strikeout. So you can’t enter the octagon seeking a knockout, if it happens it happens, correct? DH: Yeah, it’s pretty much the same concept. I just want to make sure I’m scoring points and winning rounds, staying active and beating him up the whole time. AG: What is it like to land one of your famous “H-Bombsâ€? and knock somebody out? DH: Well, you brought up the baseball analogy so its like hitting a grand slam — and that one being in UFC 100 when I did that to him last, it was like hitting the grand slam in the World Series because it was their (UFC) biggest show to date that they had at that HENDERSON, continued on Page 5

Murray on co-stars, new season By Elise Cooper MilitaryPress

JJ: John Malkovich as well? I know I’m a huge fan. PB: Absolutely, same here. I am a big fan of his work as well. JJ: He is so amazing — his accent is pretty good. PB: Perfect right? JJ: Building the set, it must have caused a little bit of a shock to put together something so spectacular? PB: It was fun! JJ: Really? PB: Yes, because we got to go big a real big set. We got to be kids with Lincoln Logs but bigger! JJ: That’s a pretty massive Lincoln Log, Peter. PB: Yes it was. It was a massive Lincoln Log and fun to do at the same time. JJ: I was surprised to see you in it as well, that is a nice bonus. PB: Thank you, it was actually fun to do it. JJ: You took on the film and started putting it all together; did you see it was going so big? I mean, you have your human characters but now you have this big other character (the rig) to control. How did you manage the double duty? PB: It was fun too. Making movies is always super challenging and for me it is getting myself fired up and getting excited for those challenges. The set was a big challenge and executing it in New Orleans with the heat and the water — you have to be up for it. As long as you are I find it all works out pretty well. JJ: The story line is so intense and you didn’t sugar coat anything?

“NCIS is a police procedural airing on CBS. It is based on the special agents from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service that investigates all major criminal offenses. It is now in its 14th season and has been the No. 1 dramatic show on TV since 2010. Having been with the series since its first year, Sean Murray’s character — Agent Timothy McGhee — has grown to become an important part of the series. McGhee’s main function is to help with the technology needed for the investigations. Below is an interview with Murray. Elise Cooper: The show lost two characters will they be replaced? Sean Murray: In the premiere on Sept. 20, Jennifer Esposito and Wilmer Valderrama will join the show, but I have been sworn to silence to say in what capacity. We will address havSean Murray ing lost the teammates in this episode as well. We will not ignore what happened. EC: Your character seems to have grown over the years? SM: Yes, having started out as a rookie agent. He is now a senior field agent with a major responsibility. This year people will see more of the progression of McGhee, who is the techie of the team. His specialty is hacking and computers. EC: Do you think your show is relevant to today’s issues? SM: Within our storylines we have always been a show that mirrors reality. So I will be surprised if we do not address ISIS and the social media influence. Sometimes we have had the rare misfortune of predicting some things. It is as if we are playing in this creative sandbox. EC: What is it like working with Mark Harmon who, by the way, used to be the starting QB for the UCLA Bruins? SM: I first worked with Mark when I was 15 in a show called “Harts Of The West. I was one of the sons and he was a guest star, which was 23 years ago. He became one of my closest friends. Now I play his right-hand man. Regarding the football games, when USC plays UCLA he becomes pretty serious about his alma mater. I think

his week in theaters comes director Peter Berg’s film about the British Petroleum oil disaster and the courage of those aboard “Deepwater Horizon. In April of 2010, a drilling rig known as “Deepwater Horizon owned by BP oil was a floating rig that could travel to any spot for drilling. Mike Williams (Mark Wahlberg) boarded the rig along with Jimmy Harrell (Kurt Russell) and Andrea Fleytas (Gina Rodriguez). With questions already looming about the readiness of the rig, Harrell has questions for the execs already on board. Already in conference are Vidrine (John Malkovich), and Jimmy calls them out on the inspection that seems to have been bypassed. Mike isn’t happy, asking Caleb Holloway (Dylan O’Brien) who is working the pipes if the inspection has been done. Agreeing to a pressure test, everyone on the rig waits as the first test fails. It is Vidrine who consistently tries to out-talk the crew on what BP is expecting from the rig and there is nothing wrong. Nothing could be further from the truth when later in the evening the earth decides to revolt against the rig. The explosion brings out courage of the many to save lives! Berg has taken the story of Deepwater 2 0DU

Horizon and made it into a film that tells the story bringing Mike Williams to the forefront as a hero. This isn’t the first film Berg has brought an intense story about courageous individuals to the screen. In 2013 he directed the film “Lone Survivor about Marcus Luttrell (also played by Wahlberg) and his team on a mission to capture a Taliban leader. In 2017, the film “Patriots Day will be released about the Boston Marathon bombing and the citywide manhunt for the terrorists. I had the pleasure of speaking with Berg about “Deepwater Horizon and what pushes him to tell stories of extraordinary people and events. JJ: Tell me what interested you in wanting to take on this project? PB: There was a “60 Minutes piece about Mike Williams, and it really just got to me. I thought it was a great story and it spoke to me. JJ: Did you realize the monumental scope of the making this film when you decided to go ahead and make the film? PB: I did. I knew it was going to be a challenging movie and I felt absolutely ready for it. I was actually really excited to get involved and get it going. JJ: Did you already have a cast in mind? PB: Mark (Wahlberg) was already to go and we knew each other, which was obviously part of the reason I was excited about the film. JJ: He and Kurt Russell together are so fantastic and amazing in the film. Was Kurt some one else you knew right away needed to be in the film? PB: Not right away but pretty quickly I thought of Kurt. I am a really big fan of his.

A former owner of Sorensen’s Resort in Hope Valley would charge guests according to the car they drove.

REVENUE MANAGEMENT:

A brief history (or how to save money on hotel rooms) Before I became a full-time travel writer, I was in the hotel business. At that time, in the early 1970s in San Diego, revenue management wasn’t even a phrase, much less a concept or coveted position in an organizational chart. In its primitive state, it was a loose practice. In summer how we loved the people from Arizona! Then there were weekends and special events (anyone remember the Cool Jazz Festival?). Sometimes minimum stays were even required over holidays. When more tourists visited, a hotel would simply raise room rates. Wow! Someone early in the history of economic theory called it “supply and demand. Then about 15 years ago or so, some suit dreamed up the position of “Revenue Manager. Usually, the front desk or reservations manager was given this job/title which, of course, they’d already been doing. Introducing a revenue manager to a guest is like saying, “Hi, here’s the person who is going to squeeze every penny out of

you. It makes me all warm and fuzzy. Now sophisticated software programs continually determine rates. I recently heard one of the best revenue management stories ever. I was visiting Sorensen’s Resort in Hope Valley to write a travel feature. It’s a quintessential mountain getaway: cabins, hiking, gorgeous views, etc. The owner (since by Howard Hian the early ’80s) told me that the previous proprietor had his own unique way to determine nightly room rates. He would watch as cars drove onto the property and charge according to the model. Guess who paid more, the Chevy or the Caddy? That’s really imaginative, old school revenue management. For the traveler, the key to saving money is by traveling in off or shoulder seasons when hotels aren’t busy. Who knows, maybe even drive up in a jalopy. Enjoy the journey‌ For more from Howard Hian, go to www.Travelswith-Hian.com.

The 8 best rivalries in the NFL By Brett Smiley Fox Sports

When these teams clash, it’s personal Familiarity breeds contempt — an idea that’s reaffirmed between NFL division rivals twice and sometimes three times a year. But, especially in the era of NFL parity, rivalries ebb and flow. It helps a rivalry when both teams are riding high, the games are closely contested, the combatants win a relatively equal share of games and there’s a lot at stake. With that in mind, we’ve ranked the top eight rivalries in the NFL today.

8. Seahawks vs. Rams

After an amazing touch down reception at the end of last season, Chargers receiver Tyrell Williams is filling the void left by Keenan Allen.

WILLIAMS PROVING TO BE NEXT MAN UP

2nd-year receiver looks to build on first impression

W

hen the Chargers lost Keenan Allen for the year from a knee injury in the first game of the season, many figured the front office would sign a seasoned veteran to fill the obvious void in the receiving corps. Although there were some well-known veterans available — namely James Jones who had been with the bolts during training camp — the team believes it already has their man in house. Enter second-year receiver Tyrell Williams. One of only four undrafted rookies to make the active roster out of training camp last year, the 6-foot-4-inch, 205-pound Williams made quite the impression by converting his first NFL reception into an 80-yard touchdown in the season finale against the Broncos last season. What made this catch extra special was it came against one of the top cornerbacks in the NFL — All Pro Aqib Talib. Military Press reporter Art Garcia Jr. caught up with Williams to ask him a few questions as the team prepared for the Indianapolis Colts. Art Garcia Jr.: You look very comfortable with your role in the offense in the 4 0DU

CHARGERS REPORT

by Art Garcia Jr.

first two games, how are things going? Tyrell Williams: Things are going well. I’m excited to get back out there on the field this Sunday and hopefully get in the end zone again — so I’m excited. AG: Aside from the last game versus Denver last year, you played mostly on special teams. What were your thoughts coming into this season? TW: I just wanted to make sure I put myself in the best opportunity to be on the field as much as possible. I’m just excited to hopefully get another win this weekend and keep things rolling. AG: Having made the team as an undrafted free agent last year, did you train any differently for this season? TW: Oh yeah. This offseason I made sure to focus on things I wasn’t as good at last season, like getting out of my breaks and running crisper routes. So that was kind of my main focus this offseason. AG: Were you familiar with the Chargers at all before signing with them? TW: No, I talked to them a little bit during my junior pro day, and during my senior year I talked to them little bit — but

A few years ago the Seahawks-49ers would have been the marquee NFC West rivalry, but Jim Harbaugh is gone and the 49ers have taken a huge step back. Owing in large part to a stellar defensive line, the Rams have had the Seahawks’ number in recent years, despite the Rams’ perpetual “7-9 bull***. It may not be the sexiest rivalry, but there’s a certain appeal to lowscoring slogs in which the underdog often comes out on top.

7. Packers vs. Vikings

that’s about it. AG: What made you sign with the Chargers? TW: I came here for a visit during the draft visits and stuff and I really liked it, liked the coaches and stuff, so it kind of worked out that way (signing with the Chargers). AG: Did your agent kind of point you here knowing the Chargers have a history of undrafted free agents making the team? TW: No, that wasn’t really one of the thoughts, but later on in the season we talked about that but that was about it. AG: Do you remember what your initial goals were coming in as an undrafted rookie? TW: My first year I just wanted to make the team — do whatever it takes to make that final 53-man roster and go from there. AG: So tell me your thoughts when you first learned that you made the team? TW: Honestly, it was indescribable. It was awesome. I made sure I called my family and it’s just hard to go back and describe that feeling. AG: Was it really nerve-racking waiting to get that call? TW: Definitely nervous. I just came in and tried to go about what I had normally done, but I was definitely nervous.

Brett Favre wearing a Vikings jersey represented a strange two-year period for everyone involved in 2009-2010. That aside, for the most part Green Bay has dominated Minnesota since the start of the 2010 season. That unevenness prompted Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer to say in mid-September, “We need to beat them a lot more often for it to be a rivalry. Thanks to an inspired performance by brand new starting quarterback Sam Bradford in Week 2, the Vikings won another one to make it two in a row. Perhaps this is the dawn of a contentious new chapter up north — a welcomed development for Minnesotans who live in close proximity to many Packers fans and don’t much like hearing about how mighty the Packers are. Packers-Bears is acrimonious but now the Packers can’t ignore the Zimmer-led Norsemen. “Packers fans are so quick to talk about how many Super Bowls they have won versus our none, one Vikings fan wrote in 2015. “I respect them as an organization, with them being the only community-owned team, and a team with a long history and tradition, but mainly my hatred is toward the arrogant ‘We’re so high and mighty’ Packers fans. There’s a good chance this year’s NFC North winner may come down to the second Packers-Vikings clash of the season on Christmas Eve on Lambeau Field.

point. So it was something pretty special. AG: Many people speculate on what an athlete perceives as his best performance — was that knockout of Bisping the best punch you ever landed on an opponent? DH: No. I’ve landed some damn good punches on an opponent before and after that gave me a bigger sense of accomplishment than doing it on him. He was a tough guy, but he hadn’t really accomplished that much at to that point, he had a decent record and was a well-rounded guy that was tough and kept coming. AG: Were you surprised he was able to knockout Rockhold? DH: Yeah, I think me and the rest of the world were pretty surprised he was able to do that. AG: Have you ever landed one of those right hands on a guy where you thought he’s going down and instead he was able to shake it off and continue fighting? DH: Yeah, I’ve landed some punches on some guys where their knees buckled or maybe halfway got rocked that I was surprised that they didn’t go down. A lot of it is where it lands on them and not necessarily how hard it is — granted the power definitely helps but you still need to put it in the right place. AG: Your first fight was in 1997. Did you ever in your wildest dreams think you would still be fighting some 20 years later? DH: No, I fought just to make some money and to keep wrestling, and after

the 2000 Olympic trials I decided I’ll do it a little more full time. And then I thought, maybe I’ll do it for a year or maybe two years and make some money and be done because it was just my body was beat up so much from wrestling. But as I kept fighting I enjoyed it so much, I was making good money and my body was feeling better than it was from when I was wrestling. We just compete so much in wrestling that you don’t have time to recover and in

fighting we’re fighting three times a year so it’s not that bad. AG: What has been the key to your success during all these years? DH: Being smart with my training, learning along the way, keeping in shape and not beating my body up. AG: Do you think Bisping’s trash talking is a way for him to either hype himself up, try to get you irritated or to add more intrigue to the fight?

DH: Oh I don’t know, I don’t pay much attention to it — even if I did pay attention to it, it wouldn’t bother me. I expect it from him. I think the world expects him to open his mouth more than he should, and I welcome that. It’ll make it sweeter when I knock him out and it will make it better for the fans to see me knock him out. AG: When you knocked him out in the first fight it was so devastating that many people thought he was seriously hurt. I would think that memory would still be somewhere in the back of his head, correct? DH: Well, you would think so but you never know — he might talk to himself enough to try to remove it from his memory banks, who knows? But I have to think that I’ll always be his big brother in his mind. AG: How about a prediction? DH: I don’t know. I’m not expecting a knockout although it would be nice. But I need to be ready to go beat him up for five rounds ‌ but I think there’s a good chance I’ll knock him out again. Ringside: Aside from his kids being born, Henderson said (without much reflection) his proudest moment in his MMA career would probably be his knockouts of either Fedor Emelianenko and Vandalia Silva or winning his second Pride FC championship where he held belts simultaneously in two different weight divisions. As for his post-fighting career aspirations, he would like to be a spokesperson for the UFC and maybe do some work as an analyst on television in addition to operating his gym Team Quest in Temecula.

Memorial association connects with next generation By Lance Cpl. Bradley Morrow 1st Marine Division

CAMP PENDLETON — Members of the Marines’ Memorial Association visited Marines with 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division, to reconnect with the current generation of Marines and see the advances in training and equipment at Camp Pendleton Sept. 19. During their visit, members of the MMA participated with Marines in training exercises, received hands-on experience testing rifles and interacted with Marines as they conducted several training events. Marines’ Memorial Association is an organization that is dedicated to honoring the legacy of military service through a historic hotel that is also a Marine Corps museum. They offer programs that commemorate, educate, and serve veterans of all eras. Visits like these allow organizations like MMA to better understand what happens on a day-to-day basis in the Marine Corps, which ultimately leads to more public understanding of the rigors of serving one’s country. This understanding and gained support leads to more opportunities for veterans, said Christopher Starling, vice president and chief development officer of the MMA. “The Marine Memorial Association serves to educate the public and honor the sacrifices of members of the armed forces, said GySgt. John Rivera, the G-3 training chief with 1st Marine Division. “The MMA board members were able to reconnect and familiarize with active duty Marines. The support MMA offers include programs designed for those who are currently serving in the military, their family members and veterans. Some of these programs consist of scholarships, care packages for deployed troops, gatherings for parents of service members, and commemorative events.

VA hotline ignores onethird of calls More than one-third of calls to a suicide hotline for troubled veterans are not being answered by front-line staffers because of poor work habits and other problems at the Department of Veterans Affairs, says the hotline’s former director. Some hotline workers handle fewer than five calls per day and leave before their shifts end, even as crisis calls have increased sharply in recent years, said Greg Hughes, the former director of the VA’s Veterans Crisis Line. Hughes said in an internal email that some crisis line staffers “spend very little time on the phone or engaged in assigned productive activity. Coverage at the crisis line suffers “because we have staff who routinely request to leave early, he said. Army Chaplain Capt. Ryan Mortensen interacts with children of the Middle Mosque of Lop Buri, Thailand, in 2015. At 41, Mortensen just became an Army Ranger. About 35 to 40 percent of crisis calls received in May rolled over to back-up centers where workers have less training to deal with veterans’ problems, Hughes said. Hughes left his post in June, weeks after sending the emails. Congress is weighing a bill requiring the VA to ensure that all telephone calls, text messages and other communications received by the crisis line are answered in a timely manner by an appropriately qualified person. ficer’s son, I was allowed to fly to Hawaii and meet the ship. Then I was able to travel back and was able to shoot a bolted down machine gun. I remember wandering the ship’s corridors at night. EC: Is your character based on any of these experiences? SM: I think there is some art imitating real life. My character’s father is a Navy admiral. Timothy and he have a strained relationship. Unlike my character, I never regretted my dad not being at some of my events. We had a great relationship. Maybe because I did not know any other

way, because all my friends growing up had fathers who were on the same ship as my dad. EC: Is there anything you would like to add? SM: I am trying to get awareness of a small organization, the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (http://www.nmcrs. org), which provides financial, educational, and other assistance to active duty and retired sailors and Marines, as well as their family members. It is important for me that as Americans we support the military and their families.

there might be one or two Trojans hiding somewhere. It has been known to happen that someone watches the Trojans play the Bruins in the Multiple Threat Assessment Room. EC: What is it like working with the legendary actor David McCallum? SM: People still love him for his role in “The Man From U.N.C.L.E., where he played the mysterious Russian agent Illya Kuryakin. Now he is the NCIS’ chief medical examiner, Dr. Donald Ducky Mallard. Actually in one episode we played off this when Mark, agent Leroy Gibbs, asked Ducky whom he looked like when he was younger? His reply, “Illya Kuryakin. There was also an incident when we went to the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Georgia. As we were walking around the corner these women came running up asking if he was Duckie who played Illya. All of a sudden I felt like his protection detail. I asked him what he thought of the remake of “The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and he said how pleased he was that it was resurrected for a younger audience. EC: The shows seem to explore military life. Do you agree? SM: Yes, these are causes I want to push. A lot of people are unaware about the sacrifices made each and every day.

When the spouse is deployed many times a younger spouse is left behind with young children. I know how that works because I grew up on military bases. My mother was practically a single mom. EC: What stuff have you explored? SM: There was a two-parter about PTDS victims. Also, recently an episode about a deployed father, and a naval brat. This was a fun and personal episode because I got to talk about what it was like. As Timothy recounted his experiences it brought back memories I had as a child. People don’t realize how deployments affect the whole family, not just those serving. EC: Do you want to get across the point that those serving and their families are not just cardboard caricatures? SM: Yes. They are people and not expendable objects. I am proud to be a part of a show that supports the military and allows Americans to see the people behind those serving. EC: So were you a Navy brat? SM: Yes, born in Bethesda Naval Hospital. My father was a flyer in Vietnam and then switched to engineering a few years later. He was the commanding officer on the USS Enterprise, and an XO on the USS Nimitz. One of the most exciting things I remember is going on the Tiger Cruise. PB: BP messed up big time and you have got to be accurate with the facts if you are going to point the finger at some of BP’s behavior. JJ: The scene with Russell and Malkovich, when they are doing the pressure test, I have to say, their interaction felt so brutally honest. PB: I appreciate that. I thought for a bit, and told them if I passed away on an even day, the son born on the even day would get the car. If it happened on an odd day, the son born on the odd day would get it. A few weekends later, I went whitewater rafting with one of my sons. I was tossed out of the boat into the raging river. As I floated in the rapids, all I could hear was my son yelling, “It’s the wrong day!

RIVALRIES

2. Patriots vs. Jets

Continued from Page 4

6. Cowboys vs. Redskins

This rivalry started in 1960 when former Redskins owner George Marshall didn’t want the league to award Dallas a franchise for fear that it might interfere with his broadcast interests in the South. Cowboys owner Clint Murchison Jr. cleverly battled back by purchasing the rights to the Redskins’ fight song “Hail to the Redskins and used it for leverage. Both franchises have experienced the highest highs with a combined 8 Super Bowl titles and of course some lean years since the height of their dominance in the ’80s and ’90s. One constant is their mutual dislike that’s always evident during aggressive contests even when there’s little at stake. There’s always pride. And when current players don’t have a flavor for the animosity, fans who’ve worn the jersey their entire lives will remind them. “I learned about [the rivalry] when I was getting ready to sign here, former Redskins safety Dashon Goldson said in 2015. “Somebody told me, ‘I don’t care how many games y’all win, as long as y’all beat the Cowboys.’ At that point, I knew it was serious.

5. Broncos vs. Patriots

Although the franchises have played since 1960, this is a budding new rivalry and represents the only non-divisional grudge appearing here. It owes its place to three people/things: Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and AFC dominance. Since 1996, the

16 0DU

“It’s just pure hatred – just like two old-fashioned bullies meeting in an alley, former Steelers receiver Hines Ward said of the rivalry between Pittsburg and the Baltimore Ravens.

Patriots and Broncos have combined to win 11 of 20 AFC Championships. When Manning left Indianapolis for Mile High, he took the Manning-Brady drama with him. That’s gone now but the Broncos and Patriots have battled in the AFC Championship Game in two of the past three seasons and both teams (3-0 apiece) appear positioned for perhaps another date in this season’s playoffs. A bit of cross-pollination has added some spice to the Patriots-Broncos spectacle, particularly when Brady favorite Wes Welker ended up in Denver after he couldn’t agree to terms with New England; also wunderkind Josh McDaniels left New England to become the Broncos head coach in 2009, which didn’t last long (Tebow-mania burned bright but fast) and now he’s back in

New England as the offensive coordinator.

4. Giants vs. Eagles

As a Giants fan who went to college in Philadelphia, I can tell you it is not smart or safe to wear a Giants jersey in the City of Brotherly Love. Fans on both sides are passionate and knowledgeable and often inebriated, and it can get heated in the stands as well as on the field. There’s so much history to this rivalry (the 1978 “Miracle at the Meadowlands, Jason Sehorn’s miraculous 32-yard pick-six in the 2001 Divisional Round game among others) and the teams keep adding new chapters including the “Matt Dodge Incident — alternatively known as DeSean Jackson’s walk-off punt return touchdown in a stunning Eagles comeback in December 2010. Since 2000, Philly has had the edge with a 22-13 record against Big Blue, however, fans of the other three NFC East teams are quick to remind the Eagles that they each have at least three Lombardi trophies and the Eagles have zero. Of course, the future has arrived in Philadelphia with future Hall of Fame quarterback Carson Wentz, still undefeated as an NFL starter.

There have been so many incredible flashpoints in this rivalry it’s hard to find a place to start. Let’s start with the dawn of the Bill Belichick era in New England which began after he resigned as “HC of the NYJ in 2000. Since Belichick took over in New England, the Pats have dominated the series with a 23-11 record but Gang Green almost always shows up and delivers a punch. Blood boiled when former Belichick disciple Eric Mangini, after becoming the Jets head coach, started the inquiry into New England’s videotaping practices that became known as “Spygate in 2007. Later, ex-Jets head coach Rex Ryan dialed up the temperature in 2009, declaring, “I never came here to kiss Bill Belichick’s rings. Rex got some revenge in 2011 when the Jets pulled off a 28-21 upset in the Divisional Round. Also a lot of Jets and Patriots players have swapped sidelines, including Hall of Fame running back Curtis Martin — who became a Jets legend after three seasons in New England, and more recently Darrelle Revis (before he came back to the Jets amid tampering chargers). Recently Danny Woodhead wrote in the Players Tribune about his NFL journey that he thought the Patriots only signed him to pump him for information. Finally, the Patriots-Jets produced the Butt Fumble on Thanksgiving. And most of us should be thankful for that.

1. Bengals vs. Steelers

This one is so beautiful and so ugly. It turned from a chippy AFC North battle into a full-fledged rivalry when Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis came to Cincinnati in 2003. In 2005, the resurgent Bengals met the Steelers in the AFC Wild Card game when Steelers lineman (and former Bengal) Kimo von Oelhoffen tackled Bengals QB Carson Palmer low — and Palmer got twisted and tore his ACL. The hit came on Palmer’s first and only attempt — a 66-yard bomb to Chris Henry. The game remains a bitter memory for Bengals fans as the Steelers went on to win the Super Bowl. The ensuing 10 years saw heated battles, 3. Steelers vs. Ravens This one may have temporarily taken a a lot of Steeler wins, finally a Bengals season back seat to the Steelers-Bengals’ venom sweep in the 2009 season and come 2015, (more on that) but the flame of contempt things started to get uglier, culminating in still burns. “It’s just pure hatred – just like the AFC Wild Card penalty flag fiesta that two old-fashioned bullies meeting in an saw some truly bizarre events: a personal alley, former Steelers receiver (and crack foul on Steelers offensive line coach Mike blocker) Hines Ward told USA Today in Munchak for grabbing safety Reggie Nel2015. “I tried to tell young guys, ‘When it’s son’s hair on the sideline, and later a perBaltimore week, you tend to stay in the sonal foul on Bengals DB Adam Jones for weight room longer because it’s going to be making contact with an official when Steelers assistant coach Joey Porter entered the a hard-fought, physical battle. Terrell Suggs feels the same way. “It’s the field of play. It was mayhem. “I actually saw [the rivalry] really turn best rivalry in football, he said. “Hatred is a very strong word, but it seems fitting. But into what it’s become last year said former there’s a lot of respect going there. Because Bengals wideout Marvin Jones. “It was althe two teams are so similar. They were ways heat of the game, but it never got too quite similar for a while: highly physical, frisky and stuff like that.
