Peace And Amnesties will it Work .. ?
MEXICO CITY — AndrÊs Manuel López Obrador — a populist representing a left-wing political party that he founded four years ago — will be the next leader of Mexico, marking a major change for a country that has been led by the same two political parties for almost 90 years. Mexicans on Sunday headed to the polls in the country’s largest-ever election with almost 90 million eligible voters and 18,000 open government positions. In the presidential race at the top of the ticket, López Obrador won with a message that he’d end violence, corruption and inequality. For the past 12 years, Mexico has fought violent drug gangs by deploying thousands of police, soldiers and intelligence officers to crack down on cartels and their leaders. If its new president-elect gets his way, however, negotiation may replace the hard-line strategy that critics say has only perpetuated violence. Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, a leftist who won on Sunday after two previous attempts at the presidency, wants to rewrite the
rules of the drug war, aides said, suggesting negotiated peace and amnesties for some of the very people currently being targeted by security forces. “The failed strategy of combating insecurity and violence will change, Lopez Obrador said in his victory speech Sunday night, repeating his call to address the socioeconomic ills that push people toward the drug trade and other crimes. “More than through the use of force, we will tend to the causes that give rise to insecurity and violence, the president-elect added. He said his team will immediately begin consulting with human rights groups, religious leaders and the United Nations to develop a “plan for reconciliation and peace. So far, his proposals remain vague. And any move toward amnesty, while aimed at lesser and non-violent offenders, is sure to face opposition from the general public, rivals in Congress and U.S. allies who helped Mexico orchestrate its force-based approach.

RESTAURANT WEEK SET TO WHET SAN DIEGO’S APPETITE TRAVELS WITH HIAN

by Howard Hian
he beginning of fall kicks off with the 14th annual San Diego Restaurant Week. The event features almost 200 of the county’s best kitchens offering unique dining experiences. The eight days are designed to allow you to try new places at bargain prices. Two-course lunches offer an entree and choice of an appetizer or dessert. Prix-fixe, three-course dinners range from $20 to $50 per person. Here are my suggestions in the lunch category. Kanda Thai Cuisine, located in the newest hot food destination (the Midway area), is my $10 recommendation. Lunch comes with a choice of entree, soup, salad, vegetable roll, steamed rice and choice of dessert. The panang curry with shrimp and deep fried bananas were recommended by the server — and she was right. It’s a real bargain at $10. www.kandathaicuisine.com Backyard Kitchen & Tap is in Pacific Beach. At $15, my suggestion is to bring a friend‌ lots of good food to sample and split. For two outstanding appetizers, order the buffalo cauliflower and blackened

SEASON OUTLOOK: TO WIN, STAY HEALTHY CHARGERS REPORT
A
by Art Garcia Jr.
fter starting last season 0-4, the Los Angeles Chargers won six of the last seven games and finished the season with a 9-7 record and second in the AFC West. With the season opener against the Chiefs on Sept. 9 quickly approaching, here are a few key issues facing the team for the upcoming season. Fast start a must. Including the disastrous start to last season, the Chargers combined record during the first four games over the past three seasons is 3-11. Their record is even worse if you include the first eight games of the 2015 season, which puts the team at 3-16. With may pundits picking the Chargers to win the division, fans must remember this team isn’t the powerhouse team it was in the ’90s when it had the talent to overcome a slow start at the beginning of the year and suddenly “flip the switch to compete in the post season.
Key Stat: Last season the Chargers were one of two teams (Seattle) not to score a touchdown on the opening drive of the game. Protect Philip Rivers. Last season Rivers completed 360 of 575 passing attempts for 4,515 yards, 28 touchdowns with only

10 interceptions. With TE Hunter Henry (45 recs, 579 yds, 4 tds) lost for the season with a torn ACL and future Hall of Fame TE Antonio Gates still out of the fold, the question is who is going to fill the void at tight end? One player looking to fill that role is
second-year receiver Mike Williams. Working hard to rebound from an unproductive rookie season where he had just 11 receptions and no touchdowns, the 6-4, 220-pound Williams believes he has the size and speed to step in for Henry and become Rivers’ security blanket both on third down and in red zone sub packages. Key stat: Rivers has started 182 consecutive games and was sacked just 10 times last season. During the previous three seasons Rivers was sacked 36, 40 and 36 times, respectfully, Pro Football Focus (PFF). Stop the run. After finishing 31st against the run last season (4.9 yes. per att., 131.1 yds. per gm.), GM Tom Telesco used his top four draft picks to solidify his defense that finished in the middle of the pack in overall defensive rankings. With DT Corey Liuget suspended the first for games for violating the league’s policy on PED’s, veterans Brandon Mebane (30 tackles/0 sacks), Darious Philon (31 tackles/4.5 sacks) and rookie Justin Jones will be manning the interior defensive front until Liuget’s return. She’d grown up poor and uneducated, yet her mother always knew that Ava had what it took to be a movie star. So did she. “I wasn’t dumb, Gardner said. “I knew that my looks might get me through the studio gates. She knew she wasn’t a great actress, and didn’t much care: “A lot of my stuff ended up on the cutting-room floor, she said. “A lot more should have. After a screen test, she was signed to a seven-picture deal with MGM, and quickly became sought after by nearly every leading man in Hollywood. On her first day on the lot, she met Rooney, the 5-foot-2 star of the wholesome “Andy Hardy series. “I wanted to f–k you the moment I saw you, he told her. Gardner was 18 and innocent. “I was shocked, she said. “I still didn’t know he was the biggest wolf on the lot . . . He’d screw anything that moved. After a one-year courtship they wed, and one of Hollywood’s greatest sex symbols was a virgin on her wedding

night. “I caught on very quickly, she said. After Rooney came Howard Hughes. “I never loved him, she said, adding that despite the generosity he showed her, paying for her dying mother’s medical care, he was also a racist. “Howard wouldn’t piss on a black man to put him out if he was on fire, she said. Then, in 1945, she married Shaw — who’d also left his wife for her. But now Gardner was smoking three packs of Winstons a day and getting drunk constantly; she felt so intellectually insecure around her new husband that she finally took an IQ test. “He had me convinced that I was completely stupid, Gardner said. “I didn’t have an enormous IQ, but I did have a high one. One week after their first anniversary, Shaw dumped her for another woman.
In 1951 she married Sinatra, who she later called the love of her life. Their relationship was famously tempestuous, and her best friend Turner — who’d also had affairs with Shaw and Sinatra — begged Gardner not to go through with it: “I’ve been there, honey,’ she told me. ‘Don’t do it!’ I should have listened to her. Gardner had two abortions during her marriage to Sinatra, and a courtship that began with “fighting all the time, boozing and fighting, ended the same way. They divorced in 1957, but remained close for the rest of their lives, and when Gardner pulled out of completing her memoirs, Evans suspected that Sinatra gave her the money she would have gotten for the book. Her decision wasn’t a complete surprise to Evans; she would later say that when she was “pushing clouds around, he could publish their book. She died in 1990, at 67, from pneumonia.
“The bastard broke my heart, she said, and throughout her life she picked the wrong men. — including George C. Scott, who Gardner said would often drunkenly “beat the s–t out of me.

“Mr. Peterson, are you an *honest* lawyer? “Honest? replied the job prospect. “Let me tell you something about honest. Why, I’m so honest that my father lent me fifteen thousand dollars for my education and I paid back every penny the minute I tried my very first case. “Impressive. One day I told her, ‘Hon, why don’t you try carrying several things at once?’ “Did it save time? the person in the audience asked. “Actually, yes, replied the expert. “It used to take her 20 minutes to make breakfast. Three hymns
A pastor explained to his congrega- tion that the church was in need of some extra money, so he asked them to con- sider being more than generous. He of- fered that whoever gave the most would be able to pick three hymns. After the offering plates were passed about the church, the pastor glanced down and noticed that someone had graciously offered a $1,000 bill. He was so excited that he immediately shared his joy with his congregation and said he’d like to personally thank the person who placed the money in the plate. A very quiet, elderly, saintly lady in the back of the church shyly raised her hand. The pastor asked her to come to the front, so she slowly she made her way towards him. The pastor told her how wonderful it was that she gave so much, and in thanks he asked her to pick out three hymns. Her eyes brightened as she looked over the congregation. She pointed to the three most handsome men in the church and said, “I’ll take him and him and him.

to lose thanks to a penalty, a fumble and questionable play calling. And the hero of the game was former Charger Josh Lambo who hit a game-winning 30-yard field goal in overtime. Ironically, the Chargers cut Lambo during training camp in favor of an unproven free agent kicker named Younghoe Koo, whom the Chargers cut just four weeks into the season. Although the talent appears stronger than in recent years, the Chargers cannot afford another injury-riddled season and compete for the division title. Prediction: 10-6 and a Wild Card Berth The Endzone: With Liuget suspended the first four games, one player to keep an eye on is DT Justin Jones. Per Gavino Borquez (ChargersWire), the 6’3, 309-pound Jones has made a big impression on teammate Brandon Mebane.
“I think Justin Jones is a great player. He’s one of those guys that I’ve seen in my 12 years that I think is going to have a great future ahead of him. I think eventually he’s going to be a Pro Bowler, Mebane said. The former North Carolina State product is capable of playing on all three downs with his versatile skill set. Jones will primarily start out rotating with DT Darius Philon to begin the 2018 season due to the absence of Liuget. But, he has shown the ability to play nose tackle as well, which will allow him to rotate in with Mebane in sub packages. Jones brings a disciplined run defender and powerful pass rusher to defensive coordinator Gus Bradley’s defense that should see an improvement in this area from prior seasons’ struggles. 4FQU 11
