Americans embrace the
PUBLISHER’S POINT
Don’t write Trump off
THE OUTSIDERS
By Richard T. Matz MilitaryPress
I
nitially when Donald Trump made his announcement to run for the presidency, I thought (as I’m sure many others did) that Mr. Trump was only looking for publicity for his television show. After the first few appearances and the statements that Trump said, I thought, “What a jerk and what a way to shoot oneself in the foot. But after the turmoil over his statements settled down and his continued appearances on all the TV stations, I started to change my mind. I think all true Americans are fed up with politicians from both sides of the aisle, the Democrats as well as Republicans. Year after year, promise after promise, election speech after election speech, our leaders fail us. We, the American public, have absolutely no faith in any of the politicians to fulfill their promises or their duties! I now think — in fact, I absolutely know — that all politicians are bought and told what to do, how to do it and which way to vote on any subject brought before the Senate and the House of Representatives. This completely destroys what our forefathers gave us. And that is the Constitution! I believe that if any other president were elected and ran our country like Barack Obama has, he would have been impeached or at least sanctioned before both houses. I also feel that the Supreme Court justices have overstepped their boundaries and have misread and purposely interpreted the Constitution to fit their political alliances. Therefore, it comes as no surprise to me or any of the American public that Donald Trump has said what many of us have been thinking but were too afraid to speak out for fear of retribution. The three candidates that are leading the polls TRUMP, continued on Page 16

etired neurosurgeon Ben Carson has surged to the No. 2 spot in the GOP field, overtaking former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and, combined with front-running businessman Donald Trump, gives outsiders a firm grip atop the Republican presidential race. Combined, the two men have 40 percent of the vote in the latest Quinnipiac University Poll. Add in businesswoman Carly Fiorina’s 5 percent, and nearly half of Republicans say their No. 1 choice for president is someone who has never won a public election. But it’s Carson’s swelling support that stands out.

“He’s the safe rebel, said Michael McKenna, a GOP strategist and pollster. Despite a debate performance that garnered solid but not overwhelming praise, and an August devoid of high-profile television feuds that much of the rest of the GOP is engaged in, Carson overtook Bush in the RealClearPolitics.com average of polls as of Aug. 27. Quinnipiac’s poll was a big part of that boost, giving Carson 12 percent support, which is significantly more than Bush, who’s fallen to 7 percent, tied with Sens. Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio. ‘AIR’
Chatting with star Djimon Hounsou
By Jeri Jacquin MilitaryPress
In theaters from writer/director Christian Cantamessa and Vertical Entertainment along with producer Robert Kirkman comes a look at life without “Air. This film tells the story of the future where humanity has destroyed itself and the air needed to breathe. Deep underground are two engineers Bauer (Norman Reedus) and Cartwright (Djimon Hounsou) left with the responsibility of keeping others in suspended animation in cryotubes. Routinely awakon, they run tests and check equipment as these two men go about their routine. While they are busy with their duties a fire breaks out in one pod leaving only one for both men. With the clock winding down before their air is depleted, Bauer and Cartwright press each other to the limits of trust as suspicion and fear grow with each move they make. It is all up in the air! Reedus as Bauer gives us everything we have come to love about him. He can smile one moment with the devil in his eyes and frown the next bringing a chill down the spine. In “Air he does both with such ease that it’s actually quite disturbing in a way.
Djimon Hounsou stars along side Norma Reedus in “Air, which explores a destroyed world with no oxygen. Both of these men want to survive but once paranoia strikes, Bauer/Reedus puts his mental foot down and doesn’t take guff of any sort. Yes, a Reedus fan here and I have no shame in that game kids but trust me when I tell you this performance is very cool. Hounsou as Cartwright is a straightforward man who takes his job seriously and wants to make absolutely sure everything
is done correctly. Not only is he good at his job but has a moving motive for every step he takes. His emotions sway from time to time but he pulls it back to dead center because Cartwright’s survival depends on it. Hounsou has such a unique ability for drawing us in. Remember what I just said about Reedus’ smile and eyes? Well, the same is true for Hounsou which means I was keeping my eyes out for both of these
characters! I recently had the fantastic opportunity to speak with Djimon Hounsou about the film “Air, working with Reedus in close quarters and what he hopes we all take away from the film. What was your original reaction to the “Air script when it came to you? AIR, continued on Page 18

Continuity, health key for post-season return Telesco sticks to gameplan CHARGERS REPORT By Art Garcia, Jr. MilitaryPress

espite finishing third in the AFC West and one game out of the playoffs with a 9-7 record in 2014, key acquisitions via free agency and the draft have the Chargers poised for their second post-season appearance under head coach Mike McCoy. Devestated by injuries along the offensive line and linebacker last season, General Manager Tom Telesco didn’t panic and over-pay “big-name free agents to fill the voids the team obviously had to get them back into the playoffs. Rather, much to Chargers’ fans disappointment, he stuck to his philosophy of keeping his own inhouse free agents and signing veterans who best fit within the Chargers scheme. It worked before, why not this season? During his first year in charge in 2012, there wasn’t a great deal of excitement when Telesco signed the likes of King Dunlap, Eddie Royal, Chad Rinehart, Rich Ohrnberger, Danny Woodhead, Sean Lissemore, Thomas Keiser and Reggie Walker. Aside from Royal — who as a Bronco had some big games against the Chargers — fans were not impressed with the signings. However, each of these players made key contributions toward the Chargers’ first playoff appearance since 2009. Fast forward to this offseason. Telesco targeted both Dunlap and cornerback Brandon Flowers as his top priorities
While Antonio Gates serves out a five-game suspension, Danny Woodhead will be Philip Rivers’ go-to target in third-down situations. to retain. In addition to those signings, veterans Orlando Franklin (OG), Stevie Johnson (WR), Jacoby Jones (WR), Patrick Robinson (CB), Mitch Unrein (DT), Jimmy Wilson (S) and Joe Barksdale (OT) were brought in to help solidify the roster. With two weeks to go before their home opener Sept. 13 against the Detroit Lions, here’s a quick glance at the team as they head into their final preseason games. Having locked-up quarterback Philip Rivers for the next four years, the big concern offensively is whether this rebuilt
offensive line can keep Rivers upright throughout the season. Injuries up front and the rotation of five centers resulted in 36 sacks and Rivers playing the majority of last season with chest and back injuries. If they can remain healthy, the team has the firepower at the skill positions to be a Top Five offense in the NFL. Last season, Rivers completed 66.5 percent of his passes for 4,286 yards and 31 touchdowns despite having no running game to speak of. With injuries to both Woodhead and Ryan Mathews, the team averaged a mea-
sly 3.4 yards per rush (31st) and finished with 1,327 yards (30th) in the NFL. Firstround pick Melvin Gordon, who in three seasons at Wisconsin rushed for 4,915 yards, 49 total touchdowns and averaged 7.8 yards per carry, will carry the load for the rushing attack. The success of the defense will hinge on its ability to stop the run and generate a pass rush. Last season they finished 29th against the run (1,986 yards), gave up 4.5 yards per rush and were 29th in sacks with just 26. Led by defensive end Corey Liuget, the Chargers must get better production from the other linemen to be successful in John Pagano’s defensive scheme. Liuget was rewarded with a five-year contract extension after leading the team with 4.5 sacks, but he can’t do it all himself. The linebackers appear to have the talent to become one of the best groups in the league if they can ever stay healthy — look for this unit to step it up big-time under the direction of veteran coach Mike Nolan who replaced Joe Barry as linebackers coach. Despite the lack of impact plays on defense last year — only 18 takeaways (7 interceptions; 11 fumbles) — the unit still finished a respectable 9th in total defense and 4th against the pass.
Game Changers
With the loss of tight end Antonio Gates until week 5 because of his suspension, it is imperative the Chargers get off to a fast start like last season when they began the year 4-1. With high expectations that Gordon CHARGERS, continued on Page 20 4 4FQU

President Francois Hollande said the two Americans who first tackled the gunman were soldiers, “but on Friday you were simply passengers. You behaved as soldiers but also as responsible men. Hollande then pinned the Legion of Honor medal on U.S. Airman Spencer Stone, National Guardsman Alek Skarlatos, and their longtime friend Anthony Sadler, who subdued the gunman as he moved through the train with an assault rifle strapped to his bare chest. British businessman, Chris Norman, who also jumped into the fray, also received the medal. The men showed “that faced with terror, we have the power to resist. You also gave a lesson in courage, in will, and thus in hope, Hollande said. Norman, speaking in French after receiving the medal, said it was less a question of heroism than survival. “I hope this doesn’t happen to you, but I ask you to really think: OK, what will I do if this happens? Am I going to simply stand still or am I going to try to be active if the situation presents itself ? he said. But he added, “So were we. The gunman, identified as 26-yearold Moroccan Ayoub El-Khazzani, is detained and being questioned by French counterterrorism police outside Paris. French and Spanish authorities say ElKhazzani is an Islamic extremist who may have spent time in Syria. El-Khazzani’s lawyer said on Sunday that he was homeless and trying to rob passengers on the train to feed himself. Authorities in France, Belgium and Spain, where he once lived, are investigating the case. French authorities can legally hold him for questioning until Tuesday, when they must charge him or free him. His case raises questions about train security as well as how a man who had been on the radar of all three countries managed to board the train unbothered and loaded with weapons. Skarlatos said El-Khazzani “clearly had no firearms training whatsoever, but if he “even just got lucky and did the right thing he would have been able to operate through all eight of those magazines and we would’ve all been in trouble, and probably wouldn’t be here today, along with a lot of other people. WWII pen pals celebrate 70th anniversary MANKATO, MINN. — Bob Rose was in the U.S. Navy when he first wrote to a young woman he had never met. His nonflowery letter was sent to a Mankato address. “Dear Luella ... I am a torpedo man ... I am 5-foot 10, I weigh 165, I have brown hair and eyes, I swim and I play any kind of sport... He closed with a paragraph saying he would understand if she didn’t want to reply. Today the former pen pals celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary. Bob, now 91, recalled how back in 1942, his Navy buddy Don Sayler described the Davis girl who lived near his home. “’She’s pretty, he said. ‘You should write to her.’ My neighbor had given him my address. I was surprised my parents let me answer his letter, said 90-year-old Lu (Davis) Rose. During the war, people wrote to servicemen, she said. Military officials recognized mail’s significant role in maintaining morale — for soldiers and for those on the home front. The Office of War Information and the Advertising Council helped spread the word about a patriotic letter-writing campaign, according to the Smithsonian National Postal Museum’s online exhibit about Victory Mail.
“Keep it short. Make it cheerful was a typical V-Mail slogan. “I told her about my life and she told me about hers, Bob said, describing the first months of their correspondence. After graduation from high school and on his 17th birthday (Aug. 12, 1941), Bob joined the Navy. Back in Michigan, he had used the surname of the foster family who raised him, the Leonards. He began to use his biological parents’ last name once he enlisted. He was stationed in Brazil for a time and served briefly in Africa. Most of his military service was in Rhode Island, where he tested and overhauled torpedos. “I was a land sailor, Bob said. When the exchange of letters began, Lu was a young secretary at the college in Mankato. “Then in 1944, I got a leave and I came to see her for a week, Bob said. A telegram message announced he was on his way to Mankato: “I’ll be on The 400 at 1 p.m. Lu said she was anxious about meeting her pen pal for the first time on such short notice. She was reassured by her mother who said, “Well, well work it out. Bob’s furlough time ended and the penpal friendship turned into a long-distance romance. The time between letters became shorter and shorter.

“Finally, we were writing every day, Lu said. “Bob’s second visit was when I got my diamond, she said. The young couple was at a family gathering by Minneopa Falls when Bob asked Lu to take a little jaunt along the river. That’s when he popped the question and showed her an engagement ring he had been concealing in a pocket. The third time (he came to Mankato), we got married, Lu said. “By then, the war was over. We were
married at her folks’ home, Bob said. A cousin made a layer cake to serve guests at the small wedding. Yards of satin had been ordered for her gown. The bride’s mind was changed when the summer of 1945 turned into a scorcher. “The shop let us trade the yard goods in for a more sheer fabric. That was unusual for those times, Lu said. The couple’s honeymoon trip was to Michigan, where Lu met Bob’s foster famPEN PALS, continued on Page 13

What vets want in civilian careers By Peter A. Gudmundsson RecruitMilitary
Capt. Kristen Griest, left, and 1st Lt. Shaye Haver after receiving their Ranger Tabs.
First women graduate from Ranger school FORT BENNING, Georgia — Two female officers made history Aug. 21 by becoming the first women to graduate from the traditionally all-male U.S. Army Ranger School. Capt. Kristen Griest, a 26-year-old military police officer from Connecticut, and 1st Lt. Shaye Haver, a 26-year-old AH64 Apache helicopter pilot from Arizona, earned the coveted Ranger tab during a ceremony here under sunny summer skies and in front of bleachers filled with family members and loved ones. The event took place near Victory Pond,
a key training site where Rangers learn water survival techniques, and featured a demonstration of various infantry skills, such as rappelling, hand-to-hand combat, explosives and helicopter insertion. The theme song to the 1992 movie, “The Last of the Mohicans,’ played on loudspeakers. Wearing a mix of camouflage patterns, the students stood in formation and received a handshake from the new Army Chief of Staff, Gen. Mark Milley. Family members later approached the line to pin Ranger Tabs on their loved ones. Griest and Haver stood together, smiling while
receiving congratulations from various Ranger School officials. They had accomplished a hard-won honor that has eluded many a male soldier since the course was founded in 1952. Ranger School is a 62-day course described as the Army’s premiere infantry leadership course, an ordeal that pushes students to their physical and mental limits. “It’s pretty cool that they have accepted us, Haver said during a briefing with reporters on Thursday, referring to their FIRST WOMEN, continued on Page 13

Savvy employers know that military veterans often hold the solution to their continuing struggle to attract and retain high-quality talent. But as veteran unemployment drops to one of the lowest levels in years (now 4.4 percent), hiring managers are finding themselves competing aggressively for this worthy talent pool. To compete effectively, companies need to ramp up their veteran-hiring strategies. At the core of this effort, companies must understand what most veterans seek as they transition to, or further develop, their civilian careers. Veterans seek essentially the same features in their careers as everyone else, but two factors set veterans apart. One factor is the alacrity, focus and dedication with which they seek these benefits. The other is that, due to their military experience, veterans tend to focus on certain special sets of needs. One way to conceptualize and remember this universe of needs is with an alliterative summary — The Four M’s: Mission, Momentum, Money and Mentorship. Companies that dependably and consistently deliver on the Four M’s will find themselves assembling teams from the pool of America’s finest talent — its veterans.
Mission
It should come as no surprise that a military-experienced candidate would find immense satisfaction in joining an organization whose mission resonates with his or her personal values and aspirations. While some join the military for college money, adventure or specific experiences, virtually all enlist with an inspiration that stems from some level of idealism. It follows that a team or company that can make an authentic connection between its daily activities and a noble mission or higher purpose will attract and retain better veteran talent. Millennial consumers of products, services or employment opportunities — whether veterans or not — also yearn for authenticity. Having grown up in a media-saturated world, these modern workers can spot a fake from miles away. They will, without compunction, avoid an organization that seems inauthentic. Some veterans have experienced combat, and all have endured screening and training experiences that have matured CAREERS, continued on Page 12

ay “military cook to most Americans, and they will conjure a picture of Cookie in the Beetle Bailey comic strip. They certainly wouldn’t conjure a picture of Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer Derrick D. Davenport, an executive chef with the Joint Staff and the 2015 American Culinary Federation’s Chef of the Year. The Chef of the Year is the highest award presented by the federation, and Davenport is the first military chef to earn it since the award was established in 1963. He competed for the award at the ACF’s annual convention in Orlando. Unlike Cookie who is forever pictured in a stained T-shirt stirring sauce or slopping chipped beef on a tray, Davenport is a slim and trim culinary specialist who is the executive chef/senior enlisted aid to Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey.
Growing Up in the Kitchen
Davenport said he got his start watching his father and grandmothers cook in Detroit. “My dad is the family cook, and one of my grandmothers is a professional cook, and the other is just a good Southern cook, Davenport said during an interview. “I always hung around the kitchen with all three of them. Early on, my grandmother said I’d watch episodes of PBS’s Julia Child just as much as Sesame Street. I always gravitated to the kitchen and cooking.
Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer Derrick D. Davenport, an executive chef with the Joint Staff, is the American Culinary Federation’s Chef of the Year for 2015. He went to a culinary school in Livonia, Michigan, and then worked at restaurants and country clubs in and around Detroit for a few years before joining the Navy in 2000. “I always wanted to serve my country, he said. “One of the master chefs I worked for was in the Navy back in the Vietnam era, and he’d always regale his class with sea stories and all the great times he had.
Davenport remembered that when he was looking for his next challenge. His recruiter told him the Navy was the only branch that worked for presidential food service, “and that kind of became my goal.
Career on Land, at Sea
First, though, he served aboard the fast attack submarine USS Annapolis out
of Groton, Connecticut, for five years, and then served as an instructor at Great Lakes Naval Training Center located near Chicago. Davenport served 14 months in Herat, Afghanistan, in 2006 and 2007. He was able to get out of the forward operating CHEF, continued on Page 12

CHEF Continued from Page 9 base and see some of the western Afghanistan city. “We built a couple of schools and I worked with the Afghan National Army, he said. “I would walk to the Afghan DFAC to train the Afghan cooks how to cook. The instruction was to teach the Afghans the hygienic way to cook, Davenport said. “We would make sure they handled stuff that they butchered correctly — no crosscontamination. We made sure they cooked to the proper temperature. I learned a lot from their style of cooking, as well, he said.
Culinary Talent
Davenport was selected for the chairman’s staff because they needed a chief who could both cook and lead. The test was they gave him a basket of food and said he had 30 minutes to craft a menu and make a three-course meal. “I did seared tuna with an Asian slaw, chicken breast risotto and a Grand Marnier mousse for dessert, he said. “I was hired on the spot. Davenport uses fresh in-season produce and fruit when he cooks. He said the Dempseys give him a lot of latitude. “They give us full creativity to do what we want within the dietary restrictions of the guests, he said. “We cook healthy foods and try not to overdo it on the calories.
Competing Around the Country
For the Chef of the Year competition,
Davenport first had to compete regionally. He won that competition in Buffalo, New York, in January. The secret ingredient he had to cook was rabbit. In Orlando, the secret ingredient was squab and frog. That competition was like Iron Chef in front of an audience of chefs. The rules are four courses in one hour with no advance prep. “I tried to keep everything summery and light because hey, it’s July in Orlando with 100 percent humidity,â€? he said. The first course was tomato consomme with tomato compote and a frog fritter on top of that. “The second course was a smoked squab breast ‌ and a small salad and some pickled fruits with citrus vinaigrette and a goat cheese soufflĂŠ,â€? he said. “The third course I sort of paid homage to my Dad and grandmothers — those good Southern cooks — so I was thinking shrimp and grits, but I couldn’t use shrimp so I substituted frog legs.â€? The fourth course was squab with the dark meat made into a sort of sausage and the breast meat in the center. Davenport had two apprentice chefs helping, but they could not touch the secret ingredient. And he won. “There was no gear adrift, as we say in the Navy, and the tables and cutting surfaces were always wiped down. It’s from my Navy training to keep it clean because if you’ve got a food-borne illness on a ship, you are killing the mission because everybody is down for the count.â€? The senior chief will stay with the chairman until he retires next month.
CAREERS Continued from Page 8 them and sensitized them to the important things in life. The upside of this orientation is their dedication and determination when bought into a cause. The downside is that an organization that just does not seem important will sustain no appeal for the applicant or employee.
Momentum
After three to 20 or even more years in uniform, no veteran wants to step back in his or her next job. Too often, veterans fear that they have to enter the civilian world a number of notches below their current stations. Sometimes, this is just a matter of perception. But, more often, it is a result of the rigidity of the employers’ career-progression ladders. Effective employers will examine their hiring practices to see that due credit is assigned for military experience, even when the nature of the work is not precisely that of the new role. The careful crafting of job descriptions should be inclusive of military experience and education. In the armed forces, people finish what they start because they must do so. And good communication skills are essential when lives are at stake in urgent situations.
market value. Indeed, the very notion of market value can seem strange to transitioning veterans who come from a world of fixed “time and grade pay scales that place importance on seniority and rank above demonstrated competence and reliability. Veterans need to understand the relationships among contribution, value and pay and benefits. Employers who effectively lift the veil of secrecy regarding compensation paths and progressions will find that veterans appreciate the direction and clarity in an area that might otherwise baffle them.
Mentorship
While civilians speak of management and sometimes avoid the term “leadership, military members spend much of their service time in the study and practice of the latter art. Most adhere to a simple but aspirational definition of leadership. Those so tasked will both accomplish their assigned mission and take care of their people. This dedication to the needs of team members can sometimes be lacking in a civilian environment solely dedicated to profit or other arbitrary operating metrics. That environment can seem coldly devoid of human purpose or connection. Competitive employers will take leadership development seriously and dedicate resources to cultural development. Since veteran talent is such a key compoMoney nent to an enlightened talent-acquisition All employees desire and deserve to be strategy, any serious veteran-hiring effort paid fairly for their contributions and la- will pay careful and consistent attention to bor. The challenge with veterans comes the “Four M’s that the best veterans will from their lack of understanding of their seek and require.

FIRST WOMEN Continued from Page 8 male Ranger buddies. “We ourselves came to Ranger School skeptical, with our guards up, just in case there were haters and naysayers. She added, “I can say that without a doubt that the team that I am graduating with tomorrow accept me completely as a Ranger, and I couldn’t be more proud and humbled by the experience. Griest echoed Haver’s comments. “My main concern in coming to Ranger School was I might not be able to carry as much weight or not be able to meet up to the same standard, she said. “I tried to do as much as I could, and I saw everybody else helping each other out and you just try to be the best teammate that you can. Haver, Griest and a third female officer — who is currently repeating Mountain Phase — are all who are left of the original 19 fe-
male volunteers to go through the first co-ed class of Ranger School beginning April 20. In addition to the 19 women, there were 380 men who started the course. The historic achievement comes at a time all of the services are preparing to make recommendations of how to open direct-action combat jobs such as infantry to women. Under a 2013 directive from then-Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, the military services must open all combat jobs to women by next year or explain why any must stay closed. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter on Thursday congratulated the women and said their achievement will make it hard for the services to argue that any combat jobs should remain closed to female troops. Haver, the helicopter pilot, plans to return to her unit, the 4th Infantry Division’s 4th Combat Aviation Brigade at Fort Carson, Colorado. Griest, who serves in the 716th Military Police Battalion at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, wants to pursue a job in Special Operations Command.
PEN PALS Continued from Page 7 ily. “Then he went on his way to Newport. A short time later, she boarded the same train that first brought Bob to Mankato. The Roses said some of the wedding attendees had doubts the two knew each other well enough to tie the knot. “I think honesty is why we have been married 70 years. I think we’ve had a good 70 years. We’re proud it lasted, Bob said.
The couple’s letters moved with the Roses when they downsized a few years ago. One of the couple’s sons, Ron, helped his mother take a plastic box down from a closet shelf. Inside was a large 1940s-style valentine card. Stitched on its cover is a silk heart in shades of pink and topped off with a ribbon. “That’s probably the one that sealed the deal, Bob said with a wink.

A wealthy hospital benefactor was being shown around the hospital. Conservative vs. liberal
If a conservative doesn’t like guns, he doesn’t buy one. If a liberal doesn’t like guns, he wants all guns outlawed. If a conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn’t eat meat. If a liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone. If a conservative sees a foreign threat, he thinks about how to defeat his enemy. If a liberal sees a foreign threat, he wonders how to surrender gracefully and still look good. If a conservative reads this, he’ll tell it to his friends so they can have a good laugh. A liberal will be “offended.

Spanish newspapers El Pais and El Mundo both reported that he had lived in the relatively poor neighborhood of El Saladillo, which has around 6,000 inhabitants and an unemployment rate close to 40 percent. It was unclear how long he was in Spain. However, Spain notified French intelligence in February 2014, and he was placed on a watch list of potentially dangerous individuals, Cazeneuve has said. There were discrepancies between French and Spanish accounts of the gunman’s travels.
An official linked to Spain’s antiterrorism unit said the suspect lived in Spain until 2014, then moved to France, traveled to Syria, and returned to France. That official spoke on condition anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to be identified by name. A French official close to the investigation said a watch list signal “sounded on May 10 in Berlin, where El-Khazzani was flying to Turkey. The French transmitted this information to Spain, which advised on May 21 that he no longer lived there but in Belgium. The French then advised Belgium, according to the official close to the investigation, but it wasn’t clear what, if any, action was taken after that. AIR Continued from Page 2 My immediate reaction was that it would be quite an interesting world to explore actually. Right away knowing Norman Reedus with his great presence on his show “The Walking Dead, I thought it was going to be quite nice for us to explore and find a way to save humanity. Also, there struggles as well which allowed us to explore these characters that are very creative as well. What drew you to want to play Cartwright was there something specific? It’s a very complex character. Yes, he is complex in a way that obviously you come to understand his motive for being there but also a scientist chosen to be there. He has a tremendous desire to be there and it was fun to explore that. How was it to play just the two of you? In your other films the cast is quite a 18 4FQU

large ensemble. In “Air it’s just you and Norman playing off one another. I thought it was fun; I actually liked that fact that we were so confined and limited to interacting with each other. In filming you have actors and so much that goes on behind the camera. It is sort of like a very orchestrated play within chaos. It was great to work with Norman like this, being on the set every day of the film where you have only thirty days to shoot and not a lot of time to get acquainted with one another. You eventually get acquainted as we both evolved together in the story telling process of the film. “Air is very limited in surroundings, Was that a new challenge for you? Actually that was helpful. If you have too big of a house you can’t use all of them, you don’t know your house because you don’t use all if the rooms. CHARGERS Continued from Page 4 will be the catalyst to jump-start the running game, the focus here is on another running back that will be the difference-maker until Gates’ return — Danny Woodhead. In his first year with the Chargers in 2013, Woodhead set career-highs in all phases of his game with catches (76), yards (605), touchdown catches (6), scrimmage yards (1,034) and all-purpose yards (1,296). He finished the regular season with the most touchdown catches among all NFL running backs and the secondmost receptions and receiving yards. Like former Chargers running back Darren Sproles, Woodhead’s size, speed and versatility creates favorable mismatches against any linebacker, cornerback or safety responsible for covering him out of the backfield. And with Gates out the first quarter of the season, Woodhead 20 4FQU
