This speech was broadcast by legendary ABC Radio commentator Paul Harvey on April 3, 1965: If I were the prince of darkness, I would want to engulf the whole world in darkness. I’d have a third of its real estate and four-fifths of its population, but I would not be happy until I had seized the ripest apple on the tree — thee. So, I would set about however necessary to take over the United States. I’d subvert the churches first, and I would begin with a campaign of whispers. With the wisdom of a serpent, I would whisper to you as I whispered to Eve: “Do as you please.” To the young, I would whisper that the Bible is a myth. I would convince the children that man created God instead of the other way around. I’d confide that what’s bad is good and what’s good is square. And the old, I would teach to pray after me, “Our Father, which are in Washington …” Then, I’d get organized, I’d educate authors in how to make lurid literature exciting so that anything else would appear dull and uninteresting.

In the 1962 Howard Lindsay-Russel Crouse-Irving Berlin Broadway musical, “Mr. President,” one of the songs in the production is titled “The Secret Service,” which begins, “the Secret Service makes me nervous...” If allegations are true that at least 11 Secret Service agents and several members of the U.S. military consorted with prostitutes prior to President Obama’s arrival in Cartagena, Colombia, it should make a lot of people nervous. Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, has pledged that lawmakers will be “looking over the shoulder” of the inspector general as the Department of Homeland Security office investigates the allegations. The accused have been placed on administrative leave and their security clearances have been revoked.

or many servicemen, the battle is over, but the ink lives on. Thousands of soldiers have chosen to commemorate their military service through tattoos, a custom as old as war paint itself. Yet military tattoos go far beyond the usual anchor and eagle clichés, and are often as complex and varied as the military experience. For the first time, documentary photographer Kyle Cassidy has sought out veterans who marked their military service with a tattoo and they are shown here in all their glory; fresh, faded, sometimes intertwined with wounds, physical and otherwise. And the stories behind these tattoos, both conventional and surprising, are just as engaging. In a transient world, with shifting enemies, mores, leaders, and friends, this is a testament to the values of a permanent commemoration. The unique journey into each soldier’s story will captivate you. Not only is this book a great resource for history and military buffs, but it is also a great reference for tattoo artists.

This speech was broadcast by legendary ABC Radio commentator Paul Harvey on April 3, 1965: Continued from page 3 I’d threaten TV with dirtier movies, and vice-versa. I’d peddle narcotics to whom I could. I’d sell alcohol to ladies and gentlemen of distinction. I’d tranquilize the rest with pills. If I were the devil, I’d soon have families at war with themselves, churches at war with themselves and nations at war with themselves until each, in its turn, was consumed. And with promises of higher ratings, I’d have mesmerizing media fanning the flames. If I were the devil, I would encourage schools to refine young intellect but neglect to discipline emotions, just let those run wild. I’d tell teachers to let those students run wild. And before you knew it, you’d have drug-sniffing dogs and metal detectors at every schoolhouse door. Within a decade, I’d have prisons overflowing and judges promoting pornography. Soon, I would evict God from the courthouse, then from the schoolhouse, and then from the houses of Congress. In his own churches, I would substitute psychology for religion and deify science. I’d lure priests and pastors into misusing boys and girls and church money. If I were the devil I’d make the symbol of Easter an egg, and the symbol of Christmas a bottle. If I were the devil, I’d take from those who have and give to those who wanted until I had killed the incentive of the ambitious. What’ll you bet I couldn’t get whole states to promote gambling as the way to get rich? I would caution against extremes, and hard work, and patriotism, and moral conduct. I’d convince the young that marriage is old-fashioned, that swinging is more fun. That what you see on TV is the way to be. And thus, I could undress you in public and lure you into bed with diseases for which there are no cures. In other words, if I were the devil, I’d just keep right on doing what he’s doing. – Paul Harvey, Good Day.

Military News of the Corps
Welcome to PCSing
Sometimes I wonder which of us Steel Magnolias has moved, aka PCS’d, the most times. I want to know her tips and tricks. This marvelous woman should have a shiny new car (in my best Price is Right voice). Relocating can definitely rattle our nerves. Most of us don’t have time to eat and shower regularly with kids, gardening, work, school, wine tastings, field trips and vet visits. OK add PCS’ing on the TO-DO list. Thanks. Moving could mean in or out of the country. It’s important either way to be thoroughly prepared. Channels are different for TV shows, the weather is polar opposite, sleep schedules are jacked and our taste buds are back in the old state! I miss you Whataburger! Whether it’s your first or tenth time PCS’ing it is very challenging to pack without strangling your hubby; let alone adjust to a new base, new friends and the kids’ qualms. With patience, planning and a Semper Gumby attitude you’ll be able to quickly overcome obstacles of a PCS so you can jump into what your new surroundings has to offer. Also, find
your niche with the new family readiness program. For those of you new to this state: Welcome! California has a myriad of things to do and see. There are good people here all very supportive of the military & many whom have been stationed here & retired here. Like local hairstylist, Hair by Jess in Oceanside she provides amazing work for nowhere near the price of a salon. Nate down at Jimmy Johnson in San Diego is the best guy to work with in getting every military discount on a car you can imagine. Ashlyn is a Marine Wife in Temecula who is a uniquely qualified and certified realtor who knows about the VA Home Loans as well as all the areas around Southern California. Check out the base ITT for tickets and deals on events and attractions too! You can read my blog for details yet all these individuals go the extra mile in helping Magnolia’s and our hubbies feel as if we’re back in our hometown. Northern and Southern Cali wives I want to hear from you! From the local seamstress to your favorite restaurant we want to know your favorite military supporting businesses. Shout them out to me so that others can benefit from your experiences and we’ll help the recently PCS’d Steel Magnolia’s feel welcome in the Golden State! Questions or comments? Email us at Military Press at keepinformed@militarypress.com! You can also follow my blog @ http://therealhousewivesofthemarinecorps.blogspot.com/

Agenda 21 is a plan for New World Order
“From time to time, we have been tempted to believe that society has become too complex to be managed by self-rule, that government by an elite group is superior to government for, by, and of the people. But if no one among us is capable of governing himself, then who among us has the capacity to govern someone else? All of us together, in and out of government, must bear the burden.” — Ronald Reagan, First Inaugural Address (1981) Agenda 21 is the 21st Century PLAN for a “New World Order” through GLOBAL GOVERNANCE. Agenda 21 is the ELITIST plan to control your life demanding you, “do as I say, not as I do”. You will be required to give up your individual freedom, your personal property and redistribute your wealth. Gone forever will be American exceptionalism, American nationalism and the western way of life as all will be classified as unsustainable. The ELITISTS will use the government to take your money, exercise more power and to control every aspect of your life. Agenda 21 is not a Democratic or Republican “plan”, it reaches across the aisle. The Elite will call us names and make up lies to try and divide us. We will not listen. We Are Americans and we will never give up our lives, family, moraln for Oklahoma

Resolution Exposing United Nations Agenda 21 The United Nations Agenda 21 is a comprehensive plan of extreme environmentalism, social engineering and global political control, that was initiated at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992; and, The United Nations Agenda 21 is being covertly pushed into local communities throughout the United States of America through the International Council of Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) through local “sustainable development” policies such as Smart Growth, Wildlands Project, Resilient Cities, Regional Visioning Projects, and other “Green” or “Alternative” projects; and, This United Nations Agenda 21 plan of radical so-called “sustainable development” views the American way of life of private property ownership, singlefamily homes, private car ownership and individual travel choic-
es, and privately owned farms; all as destructive to the environment; and, According to the United Nations Agenda 21 policy, social justice is described as the right and opportunity of all people to benefit equally from the resources afforded us by society and the environment which would be accomplished by socialist/communist redistribution of wealth; and, according to the United Nations Agenda 21 policy National sovereignty is deemed a social injustice; now therefore be RESOLVED, that the U.S. government and no state or local government is legally bound by the United Nations Agenda 21 treaty in that it has never been endorsed by the (U.S.) Senate, and therefore be it further RESOLVED, that the federal and state and local governments across the country be well informed of the underlying harmful implications of implementation of United Nations Agenda 21 destructive strategies for “sustainable development” and we hereby endorse rejection of its radical policies and rejection of any grant monies attached to it.

Commentary “Don’t do this? What about the honor and noble history of the Secret Service, created in 1865 to stop the spread of counterfeit currency, and the reputation of the nation you represent?

doesn’t always change his attitude. One who disciplines himself, however, is better able to control his actions and foresee what damage bad behavior would cause to his reputation and family. With such foresight – and with hindsight to see how bad decisions have caused others to run amok – he can avoid a personal and professional train wreck. Was there no one among the Secret Service agents and military service members in Cartagena wise enough to say, “Don’t do this? What about the honor and noble history of the Secret Service, created in 1865 to stop the spread of counterfeit currency, and the reputation of the nation you represent? Has honor gone the way of fidelity and what we once called “morality,” before morals became self-defining? If any of these men are married, shouldn’t their wives have an expectation that their husbands will live up to their marriage vows? What if there are children? If these allegations are true, divorces will surely follow, as will the fallout of divorce, which will be brought down on the heads of kids, damaging their lives. Is a one night stand with a prostitute worth such destruction? One doesn’t have to be Tom Clancy to develop a plot of political intrigue that could actually have taken place in Cartagena. In 2007 an investigation by Telemundo and NBC News found that, “the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militia has taken root in South America, fostering a well-financed force of Islamist radicals boiling with hatred for the United States and ready to die to prove it.” Suppose one of them masqueraded as a prostitute and lured a Secret Service agent, or a high-ranking member of the U.S. military, into bed. She then threatens the American with exposure unless he reveals the movements of the president of the United States when he arrived at the Summit of the Americas. He does and the president is assassinated. Several reports have indicated that the Secret Service agents had hard copies of the president’s itinerary in their hotel rooms. Boys will be boys, but men should be men; real men, not “Mad Men,” or the promiscuous men lauded in “men’s” magazine that are always on the prowl for new conquests. I’m speaking about men of honor and integrity who are the same in the dark as they are in the light. We don’t catch virtue as one might catch a cold. It must be taught, even imposed by discipline. In our “anything goes” culture where to claim one form of behavior is superior to another can get you branded a (insert name of offended group), -ist, fewer are willing to risk criticism by standing for something. Instead, they fall for anything, even prostitutes on a taxpayer-funded trip.

or many patients, plastic surgery is a life-changing experience, both physically and mentally. Many people considering surgery to improve their looks do not realize that they may also experience some emotional ups and downs. There are a number of positive psychological benefits that contribute to the patient’s boost in confidence and self-esteem. However, some adverse emotional side effects may also be involved, such as depression and anxiety. Cosmetic surgery can be very exciting, yet, frustrating at the same time. Some may find the process a pleasant one, while others find it stressful. People find it difficult to find a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon they are comfortable with and who they feel they can trust with this major change. Anxiety may occur prior to the surgery and during recovery while patient’s try to patiently wait for their final results. Post-surgical depression is common, especially among patients with personality disorders, relationship issues, and lacking confidence. Before undergoing any cosmetic procedure, it is important to keep a positive attitude. Having realistic expectations for your plastic surgery experience is crucial to having a positive mindset
later. The purpose of plastic surgery is to improve a specific problem area of your body. There is no guarantee the results of your surgery will change your life. Discussing your expectations and goals with your surgeon will ensure the best results possible. This communication allows your doctor to help achieve your goals. Make sure you discuss what your expectations are with your surgeon. It is best to express all your concerns prior to the procedure so that he/she may address them to help ease the process. A Board Certified Surgeon will discuss the best and safest option for your specific case It is in your best interest to discuss your medical history with your doctor. Cosmetic surgery can either be minor or invasive and in any case, your surgeon should be aware of all medical conditions that may affect your surgery or healing. Once you decide on a plastic surgeon and the planned procedure, it is vital for you to prepare for your recovery period. It is best that you are aware of what to expect after surgery and understand the pre-op and post-op instructions to ensure the best result possible. For example, swelling and bruising is a normal part of the healing process, pain and discomfort can be managed with medications, physical activity should be limited to promote healing and rest, and it is essential for you to have a good support system. Remember that all of these contributing factors to post-surgical depression or anxiety is temporary. With tincture of time, the incisions will heal and your results will improve. When times get tough, communicate your concerns during your follow-ups with your doctor and keep the end result in mind. www.PoustiPlasticSurgery.com

(CNN) – The estranged wife of former football star Deion Sanders was released from custody Tuesday in suburban Dallas and said she hasn’t been given a “fair shake” over allegations that she attacked him. Pilar Sanders was arrested on domestic violence-related charges Monday night, hours after Sanders sent a series of bizarre tweets saying she assaulted him. “I understand that I have very little chance at beating a Hall of Fame, twosport man that everyone seems to love and adore,” said Pilar Sanders, proclaiming her innocence. “I’m a full-time mom, 100% for my children,” she said tearfully. “And I just haven’t been given a fair shake.” The Collin County Sheriff’s Office said Pilar Sanders, under an emergency protective order, is forbidden from returning to the couple’s home for 61 days and cannot threaten or harass any member of the family. In one of the messages posted on his verified Twitter account, Deion Sanders posted a picture of what he said were his children filling out complaints to give to police in Texas. “Pray for me and my kids now! They just witnessed their mother and a friend jump me in my room,” the first tweet, posted at 6:15 p.m., read. “She’s going to jail n I’m pressing charges!”

$50 Million! has the world gone mad? Knicks to make major push for Phil Jackson if team loses in the first round at Eastern Conference, ready to offer $50 million
The New York Knicks are ready to throw the kitchen sink at head coach Phil Jackson - that is a $50 million sink. That would be the amount Knicks ownership is ready to offer Jackson if the team does not advance past the first round of the NBA playoffs. Earlier this morning, the NYPOST reported that Mike Woodson is a heavy favorite to return as coach as long as the team doesn’t implode in the first round. The Knicks are expected to face the Heat in the first round as the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference. They will be heavy underdogs in the series.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Miguel Cotto are scheduled to meet in a boxing match at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on May 5, 2012. Mayweather (42-0, 26 KO) and Cotto (37-2, 30 KO) will be fighting at 154 pounds for Cotto’s WBA Super Welterweight title. It will be Mayweather’s second career fight at super welterweight. Mayweather, who delayed his jail sentence to remain available for the May 5 fight date, announced the fight during his Nevada State Athletic Commission licensing hearing on Feb. 1, 2012. Previously, Mayweather had been trying to set up a fight with Manny Pacquiao, something the two fighters have been unable to do. This will be Mayweather’s eighth consecutive fight in Las Vegas and sixth consecutive at the MGM Grand. It will also be his second career fight on Cinco de Mayo, following a 2007 victory over Oscar De La Hoya. Cotto will be fighting at the MGM Grand for the eighth time, and third in the last three years. Both losses in his career have come at the MGM Grand.

kobe Bryant and the NBA’s Top 5 Closers
By Matt Shetler
U
ltimately what separates the good teams from the not-so-good teams is the closer; having that player who has the ability to put a game on ice or that guy who just keeps getting meaningful buckets in a close game. The guy who always has the ball in his hands with the outcome of the game on the line—that’s a closer. It’s not just about putting the ball in the basket—plenty of guys in the league can score. But it’s when you score that makes you a great closer. So with apologies to fans of LeBron James and Paul Pierce, who narrowly missed the cut, here are the NBA’s top five closers. There is really no separating these guys. Anyone on this list could be ranked anywhere between No. 1 and No. 5, but we will start with Kobe. Kobe is a former NBA Finals MVP who has the knack for knocking down the big shot with the game on the line. He wants the ball in tight situations, and what makes him so tough late in games is his ability to live at the free-throw line. With only time for one shot in a close game, Kobe is getting the ball, and more often than not he’s going to knock it down. He’s already hit game-winners for the Lakers this year and more than anyone else in the previous years. Yes … more than Air Jordan! I laughed, most people here can’t even tell the difference between a closer and a guy who made the game-winning basket. A game-winning basket is just ONE basket, but a closer is someone who can take over close games in the 4th quarter and pull his team ahead, or claw them back into contention. Anyone can make a game-winning shot, not everyone can be closers. Derrick Rose
Carmelo Anthony & Kobe Bryant
Kevin Durant
Chris Paul
Dwayne Wade & LaBron James

Military News New TSP Savings Plan Debuts
Servicemembers and their dependents who earn less income today than they expect to earn in the future, such as those in junior ranks who look forward to getting promoted to higher grades, may want to consider investing in the Thrift Savings Plan’s new Roth option. The traditional Thrift Savings Plan defers taxes on earned income until the money is withdrawn. The Roth option allows a member to contribute after-tax dollars that grow tax free and are not taxed upon withdrawal. Both plans now allow a maximum annual contribution of $17,000. For more information, watch the video at the Thrift Savings Plan website, http:// goo.gl/veovE

All pitchers are liars or crybabies. Always go to other people’s funerals, otherwise they won’t come to yours. I never blame myself when I’m not hitting. I just blame the bat and if it keeps up, I change bats. After all, if I know it isn’t my fault that I’m not hitting, how can I get mad at myself? I never said most of the things I said. I think Little League is wonderful. It keeps the kids out of the house. I wish I had an answer to that because I’m tired of answering that question.

Military News Divorce and VA Disability Compensation: Facts and Fallacies — Part 2
Military personnel, spouses, former spouses and retirees are victimized by myths and misstatements about disability payments from the VA on issues relating to divorce. Below are some of the questions and charges made, followed by accurate and straightforward answers. Q. What exactly does the statute say about a third party getting at benefits paid by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)? A. Title 38, U.S. Code, “Veterans’ Benefits,” says at §5301(a)(1) – Payments of benefits due or to become due under any law administered by the Secretary shall not be assignable except to the extent specifically authorized by law, and such payments made to, or on account of, a beneficiary shall be exempt from taxation, shall be exempt from the claim of creditors, and shall not be liable to attachment, levy, or seizure by or under any legal
LEGAL EAGLE By Mark E. Sullivan, P.A. www.ncfamilylaw.com or equitable process whatever, either before or after receipt by the beneficiary. Q. Is there a loophole in the law that allows the judge to consider my ex-husband’s VA disability compensation as a divisible asset in a divorce? A. No. Federal law – in particular, the Uniformed Services Former Spouses’ Protection Act, found at 10 U.S.C. 1408 – exempts VA disability payments from division upon divorce. It is not an asset which can be divided at divorce as marital or community property. Q. I’ve heard that state laws do not take precedence over federal law. That means that my VA benefits are
immune from any consideration or garnishment in domestic court, right? A. While part of the statement is correct – that state laws are subordinate to federal laws – the rest of the statement could be called “urban legend.” It’s just not so. In general, all sources of income must be considered by the court in determining support, whether the income is taxable or taxfree, whether the source is wages, rents, royalties, VA benefits, military retired pay, Combat-Related Special Compensation, Social Security Disability payments or even an inheritance from your Uncle Louie! And the provisions of Title 38 make it clear that Congress intended that VA benefits may be considered as a source of income for support purposes. Not only are there graduated benefit schedules, based on how many dependents a veteran has, but there is an apportionment procedure to use when a veteran is not discharging his or her responsibility for support. The apportionment procedures are found at 38 U.S.C. 5307.

where and what is
neverland? O ver the past several years there have been a few different versions of the famous story of “Peter Pan” and his entourage of Tinkerbell, Wendy, Captain Hook and others. What has made this such a compelling story for so many years? I remember being a kid and seeing the Disney cartoon version and being spellbound. Then Robin Williams stared in a very relatable version of “Peter Pan” in a film called “Hook.” A few years ago, there was another version of “Peter Pan” with live actors and, then, more recently, the Johnny Depp film entitled, “Finding Neverland.” So again, what is the fascination with this story? Maybe, in a quiet New England churchyard lies the answer, on a headstone with the epitaph that profoundly states... “Here lies a woman twice blessed; She was happy, and she knew it.” The key to Peter Pan, and all who joined him, was in finding their happy thoughts. It gave them the ability to fly and to never grow old. To never let one’s childhood dreams die. This happiness creates the power of imagination and the ability to accomplish
what is needed. In the movie “Hook,” the Clock boys couldn’t recognize Peter until one of the boys pushed his face back into a smile. Maybe we need to continue to remember to push back our faces into smiles and remember our happy thoughts. The woman with the epitaph was twice blessed, indeed. We know that happiness is the real and proper pursuit of mankind. We are here on earth that we might experience joy and happiness. However, for many of us, that pursuit of happiness is often complicated by not recognizing what really our happy thoughts are, and by never allowing that smile to be discovered. Instead, we seem to be in a continual state of waiting for happiness to come at some future time. As we go through life, we can’t wait to be old enough to drive a car, or find our true love, or have children. Each of these, we feel, will bring us to our happy points in life. But, we see even in “Hook,” that Peter goes through his life achieving many of these things, but is also caught up in the worldly rat race. Peter, like many of us, requires a crisis to realize what his happy thoughts truly are.
Peter, in that crisis of needing to find his happy thoughts so he can fly and fight Captain Hook, finds himself, like many of us, looking back and remembering when he was happy and wishing he could be there again. Maybe we are a bit like Peter. He, like many of us at times, feel like lost boys…lost souls, who have to fight our demons, such as Hook, and wishing we could always be a kid, who doesn’t have to deal with all the grownup things of the world. Peter finally realizes that he’s had his happy thoughts within him all the time. They are his children. If we could all realize this great truth realizing that we have happiness within us at all times—we could create the joy, energy and strength to overcome our struggles and be happy… since it is not by pursuing the external things we think will bring happiness; happiness has nothing to do with those “times” in our life… true happiness is simply a state of mind. Nathaniel Hawthorne once wrote, “Happiness is...a butterfly which when pursued is just beyond your grasp but... if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you.” This doesn’t mean we sit back and passively wait for happiness to descend upon either. It is important that we seek to know the source and sources of that happiness in our life. The real source comes from our God. We can find many references of how we can be happy in the scriptures. Throughout Proverbs we learn that happy is the man who finds wisdom, has mercy on the poor, keeps the law, and trusts the Lord. One of His greatest teachings is that we can find some of our greatest joys by loving and serving others. That is, again, what Peter found to be true. It wasn’t his high-flying, mega money making lawyer job, but his kids whom he had been neglecting which brought him true happiness. Peter’s wife, Moyra, makes a profound statement about this often repeated part of life. She says, “We only have a few special years when our children want us around, after that, we will be running around for their attention.” Let us not take life so seriously that we lose the childhood dreams and joys

that we have within us. We don’t have to wait till we are looking back to remember our happy times. We can enjoy them in the here and now. I have an old poster with a saying that I have tried to live by, “Dreamers live forever.” And I pray we can try and do as Tink tells Peter to do, “To remember that place between sleep and awake, that place where you still remember dreaming,” that we may create our own “Neverland,” where dreams never grow old. May we seek to remember our happy thoughts and dreams, daily recognizing the joy within ourselves so we may contribute to the happiness of those we share our days with, is my prayer for all this week. As always, it is my hope that this message will help you this week to, “mount up as on eagle’s wings”, and renew a little of your strength to keep moving forward and find joy... (Isaiah 40:31) Until next time, may God bless you and may God continue to bless our great nation… SEMPER FI Ron Ringo, Retired Chaplain Navy/ Marine Corps holds a Doctorate of Philosophy in Counseling, and is a Certified Trauma Specialist. www.lifetraumasolutions.com www.serviceforhumanityfoundation. com www.welcomehomemontrose.org
just for laughs Quasimodo goes to the doc and asks “Can you get rid of my hump?” So the doc asks him to take all his clothes off. Quasi starts taking off his clothes, and he has loads of jumpers and jackets to take off. As he is taking them off the doc says, “Quasimodo, when was the last time you took any of your clothes off before you put new ones on?” Quasi replies, “Not since I was at school.” So the doc says, “Didn’t you ever wonder where your damn satchel had got to?” Quasi’ went home and his mom had got the wok out. Quasi moans, “Oh no Mum, you know I don’t like chinese food” “What are you complaining about you damn fool,” replies his mother, “I’m ironing your shirts”!!!
“the hellcats of the navy” “Hellcats of the Navy” (1957) is a World War II submarine movie starring Ronald Reagan and his wife, billed as Nancy Davis, her then professional name. This was the only film in which they appear together. Reagan plays Commander Casey Abbott, commander of the fictional submarine, USS Starfish, who is ordered to undertake a dangerous mission which sees him attempting to cut off the flow of supplies between China and Japan in the heavily-mined waters off the Asiatic mainland. When a diver, who is Abbott’s competitor for the affections of Nurse Lieutenant Helen Blair (Davis) back at home, gets into a dangerous situation, Abbott must struggle to keep his personal and professional lives separate in dealing with the crisis.
Trivia
Although this is the only feature film that Ronald and Nancy Reagan starred together in, they did appear together on various episodes of G.E. Theater. This was Nancy Reagan’s last feature film, although she would act again on television programs until 1962 and appears years later as herself on the “Diff’rent Strokes” television program. The film includes an introduction and conclusion by the real Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz. The Nimitz class carrier, and the USS Nimitz is named after the Admiral, and the USS Ronald Reagan is interesting of Nimitz class. In 1968, Ronald Reagan wrote a letter where he discusses the film. “Some years ago, Mrs. Reagan and I costarred in a picture called “Hellcats of the Navy”. The title came from a WWII incident known as “Operation Hellcat,” and the script was written from an admiral’s account of that operation. In making it we did all of our filming on a USN submarine station in San Diego.”

chopper is a type of motorcycle that was either modified from an original motorcycle design (“chopped”) or built from scratch to have a handcrafted appearance. The main features of a chopper that make it stand out are its longer frame design accompanied by a stretch front end, or increased rake angle. To achieve a longer front end, while the frame is being designed, the fabricator will tilt the neck of the frame at less of an incline and install a longer fork. Another unique aspect of a chopper design is that there is usually no rear suspension, meaning the frame of the motorcycle will extend from the neck (or front of the frame) all the way to the rear wheel. This can make handling the motorcycle more challenging and the ride a bit more “bumpy”. These attributes may seem radical to some but is necessary for the look that is desired. One look that is becoming more popular with chopper designs is a low frame to ground clearance or a low-rider look. Well known examples of chopper designs are the customized Harley-Davidsons, the “Captain America” and “Billy Bike”, seen in the 1969 film “Easy Rider”.
Traditional Choppers In the United States, servicemen returning from World War II were looking for a thrill. Many veterans had been trained to work on automobiles and motorcycles and were looking to add a little excitement to their post-war lives with their newly acquired mechanical skills. Motorcycles and Hot Rods were the perfect hobby for them. Motorcyclists bought up surplus military bikes and removed all the unnecessary parts such as windshields and saddlebags, to minimize weight. Rear fenders were “bobbed” or shortened just enough to handle a passenger and keep the rain and mud coming off the rear. They sometimes removed the mirrors or replaced them with tiny ones, such as the type used by dentists in their work. The U.S., where most custom choppers reside, is one of the few countries in the world that allow custom-built choppers to be licensed for highway use.

Test Drive 2012 jeep patriot limited 4x4 “LITTLE BASTARD”- THE SILVER SPYDER THAT DROVE JAMES DEAN TO HIS GRAVE James Dean’s love for speed, racing and “living on the edge” are all well documented in many books, documentaries and bios, so I won’t belabor the point here. What is fascinating is the tremendous staying power, cult status and curse stories that surround not just James Dean, but also the 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder in which he tragically lost his life. The Porsche 550 Spyder is now forever linked with James Dean– it’s nearly impossible to recount one icon without the other.

This issue we’re driving Jeep’s 2012 Patriot Limited 4x4, loaded to the hilt with options and still one of Jeep’s most popular vehicles. As we noted when we last drove a Jeep Patriot, soon-to-be consumers are reminded that a base Patriot Sport 4x2 starts at just $15,995, while the 4x4 is only $17,745. Jeep advertises the Patriot as the “best priced SUV in America,” and in that sense, we totally agree. All Patriots are built in Belvidere, Illinois, with the “upper class” Limited 4x2 starting at $23,560. Under the hood, Patriot Limited receives motivation from the proven 2.4-liter 172-horsepower inline 4-cylinder “World” engine. Our tester came with the second-generation Continuously Variable Automatic Transmission II (CVT2L), resulting in 21 city and 26 highway EPA numbers and featuring an Autostick function allowing for fully automatic or driver-interactive manual control. The 5-speed manual Patriots will deliver 23 and 28 EPA numbers. Inside, Limited’s interior is loaded with standard equipment like heated seats, power driver seat, front passenger folding seat, rear 60/40 reclining seats, Sirius/XM with one free year, 6-CD Stereo, audio jacks, air conditioning, rear defroster, steering wheel controls, cruise, tilt wheel, premium carpet mats and much more. We like Jeep Patriot, and consumers high on Jeep tradition will, too. However, spending $28,000 on a Patriot is questionable, as this amount will get you into a much better vehicle. Likes: Jeep looks, off road genes, ride, entry price, 100,000 mile warranty. Dislikes: Engine a bit noisy, Fiat may introduce a new model in 2014.

I paid $15 I think. I got that maybe in 1941, it was a rose, in memory of my mother. In 1950 I got shot right through that tattoo in the battle of Taechon about 30 miles from the Yellow River. It knocked me on my ass—it was like I got hit with a baseball bat, knocked me down and I flew, I don’t know how far I flew, but it felt like a big electric shock, I got whacked, it knocked me down right off my feet. It was October 30th, 1950. I believe we were the first American outfit to meet the Chinese up there. I was in the 5th Regimental Combat Team, that’s how I got shot, I think I’d been there nine days, they’d flown me out there after I re-enlisted because they were short guys. I spent four months in the hospital, left the end of October 1951 with partial paralysis in my right shoulder. But before that, on August 17th, 1944, I volunteered for the Army to fight in WWII. I remember it took 17 days to cross from Boston to England, freighters, destroyer escorts, PBYs and dirigibles followed us out for a while—the ship was either the Marine Dragon or the Sea Robin, I don’t remember exactly. I remember the Isle of Mann is the first thing you see. I was in the 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division. At the end of my time, I reenlisted, in England, got my $300, par-
tied in London with some paratrooper pals, went home for 60 days, then went back to Germany, March 1946. We were at the Palace of Justice, security for the Nurenberg trials—when they sentenced Goreing and those guys to die, I think it was September of ‘46, they wouldn’t let us go out, they restricted us to barracks, they were thinking the Germans were going to try and do something, but they didn’t.
So to pass the time we tattooed ourselves by taking a lead pencil, then a razor blade, scraping the lead off into a powder, taking some rose hair oil, tying two needles together, and we tattooed ourselves. I put “13 19 77 02” and “Pennsylvania” on my right arm and almost got court-martialed because the 1st sergeant was a WWI veteran from the 1st Division and he said, “If you ever serve in the Army

and you didn’t serve in the 1st Division, you’re not a soldier.” He came at us and read us the Articles of War. I did a poor job of putting “13 19 77 02” on my right arm. Years later I was in the Coatesville [Pennsylvania] VA hospital and some Marines from Vietnam asked me “where’d you get your tattoos?” and I told them. They took me down to a tattoo parlor and, I think it cost me a couple of hundred dollars, but I got that botched tattoo covered up with a panther looking through the grass, that’s on my right arm. Then I got my other tattoos on my left arm, I put my first grandson’s name on my arm, he was born in 1986 and he just joined the Navy last month. Then I got the 5th RTC and the pentagon shape, USA Infantry, crossed rifles, KOREA. I couldn’t tell you when I got that one. I got the 5th RCT patch, which is a pentagram, on my right arm when I come home from Korea—that was ‘51 or ‘52. I re-enlisted to go to Korea because I heard they were torturing kids, castrating them, tying them up...I went down to re-enlist and they wanted me to go that night because they didn’t have enough people. I got shot about nine days after that. They flew us over there because they needed replacements. There are things I saw that still keep me awake at night.

E5, United States Marine Corps 4th Assault Amphibian Battalion (AABN) Alpha Company Operation Iraqi Freedom III 2001–2007 Tattoo by Joey Nobody I decided I was going to get my Marine Corps tattoo when I was getting out—that once I’d branded myself, that was it. I wanted one that was unique and different from everything else. A lot of people have just the eagle and the anchor or they’ve got the stuff they pull off a t-shirt or whatever. I came to Joe and said “I want it to be a Marine tattoo, but I want it to be completely unique—no one else is going to have it.” When I first started, I was on my way to become an officer in ROTC and everybody that I had talked to who was a prior enlisted who was becoming an officer said, “The guys really don’t respect anybody who hasn’t done what they’ve done before,” so I joined the reserves to get the enlisted side of it—hoping that would make me a better officer when the time came that I got commissioned. But of course, along the way I wasn’t able to get my degree completed because I kept going to Iraq. So I
Reta and her son, Robert Rae E3, United States Marine Corps, 3/2 Weapons Co, 2002–2006, Iraq: 2006 Tattoos by Jim Quinn, Inkjam Robert: The tattoo on my forearm, my unit symbol, I was with Third Battalion, Second Marines, weapons company. It’s the EGA, Eagle, Globe, and Anchor with a sword and the letters “OIF,” Operation Iraqi Freedom 0/331 that was my MOS, machine gunner, and on the inside of my arm I have two spent rounds, shell casings, and my buddy’s name and the date he was KIA on our deployment and I was hit by an IED myself—you can’t really get an IED tattoo, so I did the next best thing, I got a frag-grenade with some blast behind it. Reta: My tattoo says “Marine daughter, wife, mom.” My father served, my husband served, my sons served, and my daughter did a stint in the Army.
just decided that my experience with the Marines was going to be enough, just the enlisted side and get out. Originally, when I joined it was because I was just a stupid kid who wanted to save the world and who played too many video games. Now it’s gotten me in the profession that I want to be in, which is security.
Iraq was boring, really. When we got there everybody was making this out as though it was going to be some big, giant thing, like World War II, or Vietnam. It took us a month to get to Baghdad. I was in two or three fire fights—I don’t know what everybody else’s experience was, but I get excited when I get shot at and I’m shooting
back. Combat was kind of an adrenaline rush that I actually like. Some people get freaked out. I was happy. It was what I came there to do. And then we got to the end, we got to Baghdad in a month and I was like, “Is this it?” It was actually kind of disappointing.
My grandfather served in Vietnam and then my dad served in Desert Storm, both of my boys served in Iraq. Sending a child to war is...hell. You want to support them as hard as they can, you’re proud, because very few people are standing in line today to serve in our military. I saw my mom go through it, I met my husband shortly after he got home from Beruit and I had two boys who went through in the Marine Corps, so it’s been a family thing. We don’t always necessarily agree with our children’s decisions... no parent wants to bury their children first. We prayed night and day when my oldest was in Iraq. I’ve never been so scared in my life. But I was proud of him—but if you love them then you make the sacrifice with them. I was on Mass. Ave coming home from work, about 1:30 in the afternoon, and I got a phone call and it was my Bob and he says, “Mom, I’ve been hit and I’m hurt, I’m alive but I’m hurt.” And then the phone went dead. I was screaming into the phone, “Rob, Rob, Rob, talk to me!” but there was nothing. And we went three days and there was no information no calls...nothing. And we didn’t know if he was dead or alive. As long as there’s a breath left in them, they let them call home. I didn’t now how bad he was and the pain and sorrow of losing a child—I was not prepared to sacrifice a child. And then a week and a half later I got a call that he was recovering and in the Iraqi hospital. And I’ve never been so grateful in my life, but I still wanted my son home. And when he arrived in North Carolina back from Iraq—I’ve never been so happy to see someone in my life, so happy. He’s been my savior. I got my tattoo when Bob was still overseas, after he was injured.

Kim Novak tells all “DID I do the right thing, leaving? Did I walk out when I shouldn’t have? When I think that way, that’s when I get sad.” That is legendary screen goddess Kim Novak, talking just the other day to Turner Classic Movies host Robert Osborne. Miss Novak made a rare appearance at Osborne’s annual TCM Classic Film Festival in L.A. Miss Novak has always spoken about her difficulties in Hollywood, the unhappy experiences on movie sets, her resistance to being typecast and her choice, eventually, to leave Hollywood, when her career was still thriving. We interviewed Kim a few years back on the phone, and it was rather thrilling. The husky voice of “Vertigo,” “Bell, Book and Candle,” “Picnic,” etc., was instantly recognizable. There was something wistful behind the voice, though Kim was in a merry mood, discussing the brutal studio chief Harry Cohn and her favorite leading men. But Mr. Osborne got something startlingly new out of Kim. She admitted to suffering from bipolar disorder and that she sometimes regrets her decision to leave show business, though she has been many years married to her veterinarian hubby in Oregon. She says she did not receive the proper diagnosis and medication until years after she left the movies. (No wonder Kim was always so sympathetic and supportive of Marilyn Monroe, who was probably bipolar herself.) Kudos to Robert Osborne for inspiring Miss Novak to tell us so much more than she ever has before. And Kim, now that you have told, how about making another movie?

Angelina Jolie – Just your ordinary mom with kids. Really! By Liz Smith
“I AM not in favor of long engagements. They give people the opportunity of finding out each other’s character before marriage, which I think is never advisable,” said Oscar Wilde.
DESPITE THE global media anticipation of the Angelina Jolie-Brad Pitt nuptials, the eternally gossiped-about couple continues their normal lifestyle. And I mean, truly “normal.” Last week Miss Jolie was spotted in L.A. dropping off a few of her children at the Universal Child Care Center. Both she and Brad do this often, no helpers or nannies to be seen. Jolie looked and behaved like any other young mother. Except, well – she is Angelina Jolie. People try not to stare, but even dressed down and minimally madeup, Jolie is a striking creature. (A few days later she was at Eva’s Hair Salon, accompanied by daughter Zahara. They were having some cozy mani-pedi time.) Angelina is planning to appear next month at her former grammar school El Rodeo School in Beverly Hills. She will read excerpts from her favorite book as a child, “Ginger Pye,” by Eleanor Estes. Jolie has also been active in rallying L.A. public schools to pay more attention to their libraries, which have suffered budget cuts. Sofia Vergara and Gwyneth Paltrow have also been crusading to “save the library” in public schools. Paltrow has even blogged about it on her website, Goop.com. See? There’s more to some of these glamorous women than their red carpet appearances suggest.
