Four Things You Should Know about the Remarkable Christmas Truce of 1914 By Jim Murphy
Today, the economics of the holiday season and the hoped for signs of an improving economy seem to overpower any other possible message, including peace. While this should be a time
of “peace on earth, good will toward men,” it feels as if it would take a miracle today to make peace happen. Yet at Christmas time, nearly a century ago, there was just such a miracle. In the midst of a world war, weary soldiers from both sides put down their guns and declared a moment of peace. The story is likely to sound vaguely familiar because the Christmas Truce of 1914 has achieved all but legendary status. However, the Christmas Truce is not the stuff of legend, but of history. And, regardless of how familiar you think you are with the particulars, the realities of this extraordinary occurrence nearly one hundred years ago are even more remarkable and moving. In December 1914, long before U.S. involvement, the countries of Europe were engaged in a terrible war. In less than six months the fighting had torn up farmland, leveled villages, and killed over a million soldiers. Exhausted, bogged down in muddy trenches with the enemy just yards away, most soldiers thought the war would never end. And then it did. Briefly. Here are four things you should know about the Christmas Truce of 1914.
1. The truce lasted weeks.
Most people assume that the truce lasted for just one day. Yes, the truce began on Christmas Day, but in the majority of locales, it lasted until after New Year’s Eve or even longer. A British soldier, for example, took photographs of his German counterparts on Christmas Day and gave his new German friends copies on New Year’s Day. In another section of the front, the ceasefire lasted even longer. The truce stretched until Easter, a span of nearly four months! Throughout the duration of the truce, soldiers from both sides of the trenches shared a kind of camaraderie. In many places, they sang songs together, shared an occasional meal, and exchanged small presents of food and tobacco. They helped each other bury their fellow soldiers, and even held joint religious services to mourn those who had been lost.
2. The truce involved many, many soldiers.
Although oft-told versions of the story say that only a few hundred soldiers were
involved, the actual number was far, far greater. In fact, over 110,000 soldiers along the western front spontaneously stopped fighting. The number of soldiers, Germans and Austrians on one side and British, French and Belgian soldiers on the other, was so great that many commanding generals went out of their way to suppress the news, fearing that they would be blamed for such a wide scale mutiny. This remarkable, massive act of civil disobedience actually involved even more participants than one of history’s most famous moments — the civil disobedience showdown in China at Tiananmen Square over two decades ago!
3. Commanding officers participated as well.
While many commanding officers for both sides condemned any truce, hundreds of officers in the field encouraged the halt to fighting and willingly participated in it. They knew their men were exhausted, both physically and emotionally. They also realized that the military tactics used at the time — especially the massed charge at machine gun and artillery positions — were a futile waste of the lives of these men.
4. More German soldiers than Allied soldiers initiated the truce.
This is a surprising fact. Frequently, German soldiers would suggest a break from fighting, either by holding a sign or waving a white flag above their trenches. They’d climb over the parapet holding their hands up in the air to show they carried no weapons. While this often took the allied soldiers by complete surprise, the allied soldiers would then respond in kind. While this truce was clearly miraculous, the Christmas Truce did not, ultimately put an end to the war. It dragged on for four more years. Although labeled “the war to end all wars,” this war did not put an end to world wars. And, perhaps, even more tragically, historians now agree, that this was a war that did not need to happen. They believe that a mix of missed messages, incompetent leadership, personal fears, and jealousies created an inevitable march to war that could not be stopped. However, the truce remains a piece of history worth remembering and recounting as often as possible. The spirit of the truce lived on in the hearts of all those who participated. Those fighting on both sides recognized that what they shared in common was greater than what tore them apart. The Christmas Truce of 1914 also proved to the rest of the world that, at least for a moment, it really is possible for peace to reign over a war weary world. Historian Jim Murphy is the author of “Truce: The Day the Soldiers Stopped Fighting.” More information about his other award-winning books, such as “An American Plague” and “The Great Fire,”h can be found on jimmurphybooks.com.

HOMECOMING I MP
Welcome home Peleliu ARG The amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu is back in its homeport of San Diego after wrapping up a busy deployment that began in May. The ship, carrying the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit from Camp Pendleton, is expected to reach San Diego Bay by Saturday, Dec. 18. Another amphibious warship, the USS Pearl Harbor, also is en route back to San Diego, according to Navy officials. USS Peleliu, the flagship of an amphibious ready group, made news over the summer when its sailors and Marines helped provide humanitarian relief to Pakistan, which was struck by devastating floods. Also in the news was the ship’s abrupt change of command while deployed. Capt. David Schnell was relieved of command for allegedly being “unduly familiar” with the crew. During this deployment, PEL ARG and 15th MEU operated in support of ongoing maritime security operations in the Western Pacific region, and served as the theater reserve force for U.S. Central Command and reported directly to Expeditionary Strike Group 5, which is responsible for all amphibious forces deployed to 5th Fleet, and oversees the

What is Christmas? What is Hanukkah? What is Kwanza? What is Eid-ul-fita? Too many cynics want to eliminate Christ, Moses, Mohammed, Buddha — and any other prophets of good will — from the spirit of the holidays. What kind of country would this be if our founding fathers didn’t believe in God or at least a higher power. Would we even have a country? At this special time of year, my thoughts are about the men and women serving this great country, and in doing so, ensuring all our freedoms. I think about the families that are left behind. My thoughts and feelings are emotion-filled when I think of the children without one or both parents during the holidays. It’s especially difficult for the very young who know only that mom or dad isn’t with them during Christmas and why Santa Claus can’t give them what they want the most — the love, hugs and kisses from mommy or daddy. We must not forget the very special sacrifice of the brave and honorable men and women preserving the dreams and promises that America offers to all of us. With love and gratitude, Richard Matz, Publisher – Military Press I agree with Tom Horton’s comment on in the 1000% Dec. 15 issue on page 19. I am in education in San Diego. I had a student who was late to class a lot. To make a long story short, the student and four others were driven from Tijuana every day to go to school because it would cost the parents $600 a month for the student to go to school in Mexico and here it’s free. The school attendance person told me there was nothing they could do because the parents supplied an acceptable form for residency requirement. So, we educate them, we feed them, we supply them with school supplies and they give you an incredible “entitled” attitude! How stupid is that? signed, A Fed Up Teacher Dear Fed Up Teacher, Yes, it certainly sounds like you are fed-up. Issues like these are certainl a problem. We used the comment by Tom Horton to illustrate the extremes of opinions regarding illegal persons in the U.S. Even though I empathize with your frustration, I must admit that I find your response a little troubling, especially being a teacher. You refer to these children from Mexico as “them” as if refering to a different species. The problems are with our system and not these individuals. – Ed.
Military Press, Your article needs much clarification and borders on hysteria. Sounds like a rant that you’d read from a reader, not someone writing for a supposed news magazine. What programs are you referring to that are being “scammed?” The elderly are the ones who get the most SSI (you should know what that means, if you know what you wrote about) for living expenses. Want to kick them off? How about the disabled who’ve gone through much to get approved for the SSI program? Who are “the undeserved” in your mind? I know you’re thinking of the illegals, but you show your ignorance by saying that they’re part of the “welfare waste” which is totally untrue as they CAN’T receive welfare benefits. Showing the items you listed will NOT get them welfare. Those applying for welfare have to have a legal Social Security number to be eligible. Letters continued on Page 14

Hi Dr. Seare, The military decided they wanted to measure me today (monday), so we did that and the measurement was just fine; I was well within what I needed. In fact, I measured in at 35 inches around the waist whereas I was 39-41 depending beforehand. For what it's worth; you've made a very big, and cost-effective change in my life, and I wanted to be sure to say thank you for it again. I've got a body now that will keep me more mobile, motivated, and overall healthier than before, which is priceless. Thank you again. Respectfully, Daniel PS. My wife sends her thanks as well.

Improperly handled human remains under investigation at nation’s famous ceretery An investigation has been launched at Arlington National Cemetery after eight urns were found in a single grave. The graved was marked “unknown.” Army Criminal Investigation Command’s Chris Grey said of the discovery, “When there’s eight sets of human remains in one grave, it’s most likely not a mistake, so we have to look into whether there is any criminality involved.” Of the eight sets of remains, three have been identified and families notified. One set set has been deemed unidentifiable. This investigation is the fourth in recent years and comes as the cemetery continues to sort out difference between its official records and and what’s in the graves. To date there have been 211 such differences found. No formal

From Chaplain Kathie’s Blog, Nov. 30, 2010 Finally someone took the steps to ban protests at military funerals without taking away anyone’s rights, including the families of the fallen to grieve in peace, but the ACLU wants to restore the right of a group to protest.
“St. Charles County Council votes to ban protest at funerals ban aimed at military funerals in unincorporated county areas By Sean Conroy FOX2now.com
St. Charles, MO (KTVI-FOX2now. com) — ‘Even in the crucial and ugly days of Vietnam respect and dignity lived on,’ says Arch Riggenberg a Vietnam veteran who emotionally spoke before the St. Charles County Council. Riggenberg asked for passage of a controversial bill that aims to regulate anyone who tries to protest at a funeral. ‘This is the right thing to do,’ says Councilmember Joe Brazil. While the ordinance will apply to every funeral it is admittedly designed to protect military funerals from protests by Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas who use military funerals to protest homosexuality. ‘This is about the families,’ says County Executive Steve Ehlmann, ‘this is about government trying to do something to protect their privacy.’
While those who spoke in favor shout their defense of the constitution, that’s what ACLU attorneys say they will be doing by challenging this law in court.” The ACLU fightsh to protect the rights of all people under the laws of this nation but they are ignoring the rights of the families of the fallen who died protecting those rights while serving in the military. This rule allows the Westboro group to protest an hour before the funeral and an hour after, while they can still stand on the road during the procession. What they can no longer do is take away the families right to have peace as they bury their dead. It would have been wonderful if the ACLU filed suit to protect these families instead of the people causing all the harm. Free speech is a wonderful thing and should be protected, even when it is filled with hate, but no one should be forced to hear them say it.

TOP SPEED, TOP GEAR Saab celebrates 50th anniversary of first RAC Rally Victory with special edition 9-3 Fifty years ago, legendary rally car driver Erik Carlsson romped through his first of three – in a row — British RAC rally titles while piloting a threecylinder, 750 cc Saab 96. As a Saab aficionado, Carlsson has always competed in rally races while driving only one brand and today, the Swedish manufacturer is celebrating Carlsson’s rally accomplishments by building a special edition Saab 9-3 carrying his name. Called the Saab 9-3 Aero Carlsson, the 280-horsepower limited-run model was announced by Saab at a recent luncheon at the RAC Club in London to honor Carlsson himself. Understandably, Carlsson was honored by Saab’s gesture. “This is a great occasion for me,” he said. “I feel very honored to have a car named after me. Anyone who loves driving and is as passionate about Saab as I am will be excited about getting behind the wheel.” We don’t know a great deal about Erik Carlsson because he raced even before we were born, but from what we’ve heard and read about him, he seems to have been one of the pre-eminent rally racers of his time so it’s only appropriate for Saab to honor the man that gave them their honor back in the day.

2012 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Preview We don’t care who you are; everyone has to love the Camaro Z28. This gorgeous piece of machinery looks and sounds like a dream and now Chevrolet has gone and made it even better. How much better, we don’t know yet, but luckily we have the artistic abilities of Jon Sibal on every car lover’s side. Sibal has prepared a rendering of the muscle car classic using all of the rumored characteristics the 2012 Camaro will most likely receive. Thanks to him, we are all getting a piece of droolworthy treasure to gaze at. The 2012 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 will feature a 6.2L LSA V8 engine, even though the Corvette ZR1’s 638 hp LS9 was cruising around the rumor mill for awhile. The awesome news regarding the new C a m a r o ’s engine is that it will more t h a n likely feature more than the 556hp found in the Cadillac CTS-V. Stooping power will come from the 6-piston front and 4-piston rear calipers. The Camaro Z28 will get a more aggressive front end and a larger bubble on the hood to make room for the super-sized engine. The front fascia will sit a little lower than the previous model and the muscle car will also get larger air intakes. The back of the car will receive a quad exhaust with dual pipes on each side. For an added edge, the Camaro will get 2-SP550 anodized black (20×10 in the front and 20×11 in the rear) wrapped in Goodyear tires.

women of the gridiron You better not say ‘you throw like a girl’ around these women
I was fortunate to attend a San Diego Seduction practice, and I was pleasantly surprised. Although the women do justice to the uniform, they play football even better. From a football fan’s standpoint it was impressive to see the number of formations, audibles and the sheer speed and ability of the players. I spoke to the captain of the team, Audrey Latskowho told me the main reason most of the women come out is because of their desire to finally play football on a competitive level. It is not, as most people think, for the publicity received by wearing the uniform. The players are certainly not in it for the money, in fact they depend on volunteer coaches, trainers and a chiropractor. The travel for away games is paid for but otherwise a lot of the expense is left to the players. The San Diego team is 2-1 and fighting for a spot in the playoffls. Their final regular season game is on New Year’s Day. Cost is $19 for general admission, a military discount of $5 is offered. The Lingerie Football League (LFL) is a women’s 7-on-7 tackle American football league, created in 2009, with games
played in the Fall and Winter at NFL, NHL and MLS arenas and stadiums. The concept originated from the Super Bowl halftime alternative television special called the Lingerie Bowl which draws millions of viewers as a pay-perview event broadcast annually directly opposite the Super Bowl halftime show. Playing style is full-contact and similar to other indoor football leagues. Uniforms consist of shoulder pads, elbow pads, knee pads, garters, bras, panties, and ice hockey-style helmets with clear plastic visors in lieu of face masks. There are no field goals and no punts. There is a kickoff to start the game and second half. A team must attempt to get a first down on every fourth down. After a touchdown, a team can attempt a onepoint conversion from the two yard line, or a two-point conversion from the fiveyard line. There are seven women on each side of the 50-yard field, the same as the Continental Indoor Football League, but one fewer than the eight players usually found in arena football or other indoor
leagues. Teams consist of 20 players, only 14 of whom are active on game day. This means that there are usually three or four players who play both offense and defense. The standard offensive formation features one quarterback, two running backs, one center, and three wide receivers. The standard defensive formation features two defensive linemen, two linebackers, two cornerbacks, and one safety. The field is 50-yards between end zones, 30 yards wide. A game consists of two 17-minute halves, separated by a 15-minute halftime. In the event of a tie, an 8-minute sudden-death overtime is played.

Man of Steel The Quarterback was hit in the face by a Baltimore defender on Pittsburgh’s first offensive series Sunday night. Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger underwent surgery to repair his broken nose. Roethlisberger was injured while being sacked Sunday night, Dec. 5, by Baltimore’s Haloti Ngata, whose left hand raked across the quarterback’s face during Pittsburgh’s first offensive series. Ngata was not penalized.

Roethlisberger bled profusely but was treated on the sideline and returned to the game without missing any plays. He later threw the game-winning touchdown pass as Pittsburgh rallied to win, 13-10. The operation was performed Monday, Dec. 6, and Roethlisberger is expected to play Sunday, Dec. 12 against Cincinnati. He also underwent nose surgery after being seriously injured in a June 2006 motorcycle accident in Pittsburgh.

By RONALD BLUM, AP Sports Writer LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP)—Theo Epstein played it coy. He wouldn’t discuss Carl Crawford(notes) by name and yet he still made it clear than the Boston Red Sox had accomplished their goal of a major retooling by adding a second impact bat to join newly acquired Adrian Gonzalez(notes). “We did this objectively over months and months and months,” the Red Sox general manager said Thursday before leaving the winter meetings. “We realized there was a shot if things came together the right way, we could be pretty aggressive on a couple players we really liked.” Crawford reached a preliminary agreement with the Red Sox on a $142 million, seven-year contract on Wednesday night. The deal, subject to Crawford passing a physical, should be finalized within a few days. “If things come together the way we hope and expect, we’ll be really satisfied,” Epstein said. “You go into every winter with a Plan A, and sometimes it’s hard to pull that off and you move on to Plan B and C. I think adding an impact player was very important for where we were in the short-, medium- and long-term and adding two, as long as they were the right players in the right spots in the right situations, would be even better.” A four-time All-Star and a first-time Gold Glove winner this year, Crawford hit .307 this year for Tampa Bay and set career highs with 19 homers and 90 RBIs. A four-time stolen base champion, he also swiped 47 bases and led the AL with 13 triples. “Getting players in their primes or in the early parts of their primes I think is very important,” Epstein said. “If you’re going to sign a long-term contract, you want to make sure it starts at the right age and hopefully ends still at a reasonable age. Most elite position players sign through age 36. So if you can get a player signed just through 35, I know it sounds silly, but that might be a small victory in and of itself, capturing more of a player’s prime years.” When Boston won World Series titles in 2004 and 2007, the offense was led by the twin power threats of Manny Ramirez(notes) and David Ortiz(notes). “We’ve gotten away from that over the last couple years, away from that core belief that a long-term contract is a significant investment, is best made in a position player, is safest in a position player, more impact in a position player,” Epstein said. “A truly elite position player in his prime is a sound investment, if it’s the right player, it’s the right makeup, the right health and the right ability.” New York also had been speaking with Crawford. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said he never made an offer.

NO SNOW? NO PROBLEM!
While our friends to the north call them snowmachines, most of us know them as snowmobiles, and the hipper folks simply call them sleds. No matter what you call this mode of transportation, history will be made by Levi LaVallee on New Year’s Eve at “Red Bull: New Year. No Limits.”, airing live on Friday, December 31 on ESPN, immediately following the Chick-Fil-A Bowl (approximately 11:00 p.m. ET / 8:00 p.m. PT). LaVallee, a seven-time Winter X Games medalist and champion snocross racer, will attempt to jump his Polaris snowmobile longer than ever before and eclipse the current record of 301 feet. In addition to his racing exploits, Levi is widely-known for becoming the first person to double backflip a snowmobile in 2009. The event will take place at Embarcadero Marina Parks North and South in the downtown area of San Diego Bay. Embarcadero is Spanish for “landing place,” making it an appropriate location for LaVallee’s jump, which will be over water from the North park to the South park. On-site viewing will be free to spectators at both parks. Gates will open at 6:00 p.m. PT. “I can’t even explain how excited I am to be part of this year’s “Red Bull: New Year. No Limits.”,” said LaVallee. “With the jump gap itself being longer than the existing distance record, it is going to be one heck of a ride!” “For the fourth year we have the opportunity to showcase an extraordinary athletic feat. This year’s jump by world champion snowmobiler Levi LaVallee will continue in that tradition,” said Joan Lynch Owens, vice president and executive producer, ESPN content development. “This is the kind of anticipation television our fans expect to see on ESPN.”
San Diego may not be the first place one thinks of when discussing snowmobiles, but the lack of snow won’t hinder the 28-year-old native of Longville, Minnesota (population 180), the Turtle Race Capitol of the World and home to weekly meat raffles. Yes, turtles and meat – but not turtle meat. LaVallee will use artificial turf on his 1,100foot run-up path, which will provide the necessary grip for his snowmobile’s track to ensure maximum speed as he hits the take-off ramp. LaVallee’s jump will take him over a 300-foot water gap at the entrance of the Marina. A small amount of snow will be sprayed on the landing ramp to provide necessary slickness so Levi can make a smooth landing. “It will be awesome for people to see a snowmobile making a world record distance jump in San Diego,” said LaVallee. “Snowmobiles are made for snow, and last I checked there isn’t much snow in San Diego, but it is a great location for this event. Only at “Red Bull: New Year. No Limits.” would you see something like this.” Leading up to his big night, LaVallee will work with athlete performance experts, physicists and engineers, in addition to his core team, in an effort to get the most out of his body and 450-pound snowmobile. Valuable information will also be attained and put into future snowmobile development. LaVallee has had a very successful career in several snowmobile disciplines. A snocross racer for more than 15 years, he took up freestyle in 2007, and at Winter X Games 12 in 2008, he won the gold medal in the Freestyle and Speed & Style events and was named Athlete of the Games. In 2009, he won the Pro Stock Snocross championship and came thisclose to landing the first-ever snowmobile double backflip at Winter X 13, falling off on the hard impact but garnering global media attention. Earlier this year, at Winter X 14, he took gold in the newly-created Snowmobile Knock Out event.
FOUR SQUARE
LaVallee becomes the fourth athlete to star in Red Bull’s annual New Year’s Eve celebration on ESPN, which highlights extraordinary athletes pushing their physical, mental and technical limits to break boundaries and records. Robbie Maddison kicked things off in 2007 by jumping his motorcycle 322 feet over a football field in Las Vegas and followed it up in 2008 by jumping onto – and off – of the 96-foot-tall Arc De Triomphe at Paris Las Vegas. Also in 2008, Rhys Millen backflipped an off-road truck and just missed sticking the landing. Last year, Travis Pastrana jumped his rally car a staggering 269 feet over water, landing on a barge in Long Beach’s Rainbow Harbor. For “Red Bull: New Year. VETERANS ROUND-UP I MP
Ocean Beach VFW post location in jeopardy By Tiffany Hicks
Since 1899, the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) has strived to serve deserving people — particularly veterans, their families, and their communities. And, with each new individual membership, it grows stronger. Though there are 25 VFW Posts within a 25-mile radius in San Diego County, local veterans, whose military services span from WWII to current active duty, continue to serve our small community of Ocean Beach through local VFW Post 1392. This OB post provides clothing, food and small loans to those in need in addition to funeral expenses should families require assistance. This post hosts toy drives to provide for needy OB families with children of all ages, not just the very young. Additionally, this post sponsors Thanksgiving and Christmas food drives
and provides meals for OB families in need. The homeless is also at the top of the post’s priority list. Now the post needs your help. A recent “business decision” on the part of the landlord of the building Post 1392 has occupied over 27 years, forces the VFW chapter to find a new location with only a three-month notice to vacate the premises it calls home. As of January 1, 2011, despite their self support as a non-profit and pride in the Post they serve as things stand today, they have nowhere to go. Post 1392 needs to acquire a property in Ocean Beach to accommodate both the thrift store and their liquor zoning. He also stated it would be helpful if the City would help them in their efforts to move their liquor license when they do acquire a new location. If anyone reading this can be of assistance, please contact VFW Post 1392 at 4944 Newport Ave., San Diego, CA 92107, 619-225-0921.

Secret VA benefits for seniors This is the first in a series of “secrets” revealed by author Victoria L. Collier, JD, in her book “47 Secret Veterans’ Benefits for Seniors, Benefits You Have Earned... but Don’t Know About” Most veterans are at least a little familiar with the VA health care system. Accessing the VA health care system can save the veteran a lot of money, but it doesn’t make the veteran any money.
You can qualify for a VA pension even if your income exceeds the limits
The VA will pay up to a maximum amount per month/year in pension, housebound, and aid and attendance. For example, the maximum for each level for the year 2010 is: 1. Low Income Pension: Veteran with no dependents, $985 month/$11,830 year; Veteran with dependent spouse, $1,291 month/$15,493 year; Widow of veteran, $661 month/$7,933 year 2. Pension with Housebound: Veteran with no dependents, $1,204 month/$14,457 year; Veteran with dependent spouse, $1,510 month/$18,120 year; Widow of veteran, $808 month/$9,696 year 3. Pension with Aid and Attendance: Veteran with no dependents, $1,644 month/$19,736 year; Veteran with dependent spouse, $1,949 month/$23,396 year; Widow of veteran, $1,065 month/$12,681 year; Healthy veteran will ill spouse, $1,291 month/$15,493 Correspondingly, the maximum amount of income a veteran and the household can make from all other sources (i.e. Social Security, retirement pension, annuities, rents, interest on investments, etc.) is the same as the maximum amount the VA will pay out. For example, a veteran who is single with no dependents wants to apply for the low income pension. The income he receives from all other sources cannot exceed $985 per month. Likewise, for a veteran who is married and wants to apply for pension with aid and attendance, he and his wife jointly cannot make more than $1,939 in monthly income from any other source.
‘07 Volkswagen GTI
The black letter of the law says that if the veteran makes more than $985 or if the couple makes more than $1.949 in the above examples, they will not be eligible for the VA pension benefits. If the veteran or the couple make less than the prescribed amount above, then VA will pay them an amount certain to bring their income up to $985 or $1,949, whichever applies. Thus, if the claimant has no income, the VA will pay up to the maximum amount of benefit based on the level of pension benefits being sought (assuming all other medical and service requirements are met). For example, if the veteran receives $600 per month in income from other sources, the VA will pay the veteran $385 to bring his income up to the VA maximum income for low income pension. Where the SECRET comes in is this — when you call the VA and inquire about applying for Improved Pension at any of the three levels, you will be asked the amount of your household income. If your answer indicates that the income is above the maximum limit the VA will pay, then the VA will advise you that you are not eligible for benefits. With that answer, most families become discouraged and never apply for the benefit. Many people have incomes that exceed the permissible limit and feel they could never qualify. However, what the VA does not tell you is that there are certain permissible deductions that are subtracted from your income BEFORE your income is compared to the maximum limits. According to the regulations, the VA is required to take the gross income of the claimant and other household members, and subtract from that all recurring, nonreimbursed medical expenses. Only after having done this, the VA can then determine whether your income is above or below the permissible limits.

Also, where did you get your information about “the bureacracy employs two workers, and over 2/3 of the money goes for payroll.” Cite the source please, for this and the other subjective statements you have made. I wonder if any of your elderly relatives receive Social Security benefits based on their own work or because of their spouse’s work. If so, what do you think of that? – Nancy Witt Dear Nancy, Thank you for reading the Military Press and we certainly appreciate your comments. To clarify my comments I will be more specific. I use the term “welfare” as a cover all so I’ll list some info I sourced: “$2.2 trillion illegal alien taxpayer sticker shock 2/3 of immigrants cost Americans $22,449 a year, shows new study © 2010 WorldNetDaily.com WASHINGTON — Someone has finally fixed an approximate taxpayer cost of between 12 million and 15
million illegal aliens residing in the U.S. A new study by the Heritage Foundation’s Robert Rector found a household headed by an individual without a high school education, including about two-thirds of illegal aliens, costs U.S. taxpayers more than $32,000 in federal, state and local benefits. That same family contributes an average of $9,000 a year in taxes, resulting in a net tax burden of $22,449 each year. Over the course of the household’s lifetime that tax burden translates to $1.1 million. The Cost to California of Illegals in Prison Clusterstock believes that there are at least 16 reasons why California is the next Greece. One of the items cited is ‘California spends $859 million per year on imprisoned illegal immigrants,’h citing the LA Times. The actual cost was $970 million in 2009, but the federal government paid for $111 million, leaving California with the rest. However, that seems to understate the true cost. The Public Policy Institute of California states that 38% of the entire prison population is Latino. Absent illegal immigration
over the past several decades, California would have a much smaller Hispanic population. The New York Times reports that California spends $8 billion annually on prisons, and a total of 167,000 prisoners. That works out to almost $50,000 per prisoner per year. So the state spends about $3 billion just on Hispanic prisoners. If the Hispanic population were say a third of the current number, savings would be $2 billion annually. – AP report”
rich would like nothing better than for workers to be at each other’s throats. It is they who promulgate the idea that poor people are cheating on welfare. They are just so greedy they don’t want to pay taxes or help the poor. And then there’s religion, which tells us to give to the poor. I believe everyone who gets help from the rich should also get a job to do. That would make everyone happy, I believe. Thank you. Regards, Val Sanfilippo, Seiu, Sierra, Moveon
I could go on forever and take up more space in my publication but what for! It doesn’t matter as long as the liberals want to plead the case of the world’s “forsaken” and put a guilt trip on me, my children and the rest of all hardworking legal residents. Do you think that’s fair? Richard Matz, Publisher
Hello MP,
Dear Editor: I confess I could not read your whole column re: people cheating welfare, the tone of it was too painful. I wonder where you get this idea of people cheating, it must seem so to outsiders. You need to understand that even in the best of times, unemployment is 5%. Black people make up 10% of the population, and they are 50% unemployed. There is no way for them to make money but to have children and be paid by the state for their care, or to deal drugs and go to jail and be murdered, etc. I’ve also read that there are more white moms on welfare than black. As well, we have 15% poverty rate in this country, even if you are working. The
Way to go Jan!! Arizona governor vs. Phoenix Suns owner The owner of the Phoenix Suns basketball team, Robert Sarver, opposes Arizona’s new immigration laws. The state’s Governor, Jan Brewer released the following statement in response to Sarver’s criticism of the new law: “What if the owners of the Suns discovered that hordes of people were sneaking into games without paying? What if they had a good idea who the gate-crashers are, but the ushers and security personnel were not allowed to ask these folks to produce their ticket stubs, thus non-paying attendees couldn’t be ejected. Furthermore, what if Suns’ ownership was expected to provide those who sneaked in with complimentary eats and drink? And what if, on those days when a gatecrasher became ill or injured, the Suns had to provide free medical care and shelter?” — Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer” Try going to any other country without ID. ARIZONA & THE IMMIGRATION DEBATE Illegal Immigration – Sonora Authorities Angry – Mexicans are going back to Mexico The shoe is on the other foot and the Mexicans from the State of Sonora, Mexico do not like it. Can you believe the nerve of these people? It’s almost funny. The State of Sonora is angry at the influx of Mexicans into Mexico. Nine state legislators from the Mexican State of Sonora traveled to Tucson to complain about Arizona’s new employer crackdown on illegals (invaders) from Mexico. It seems that many Mexican illegals are returning to their hometowns and the officials in the Sonora state government are ticked off. A delegation of nine state legislators from Sonora was in Tucson on Tuesday to state that Arizona’s new Employer Sanctions Law will have a devastating effect on the Mexican state. At a news conference, the legislators said that Sonora, — Arizona’s southern neighbor — made up of mostly small towns — cannot handle the demand for housing, jobs and schools that it will face as Mexican workers return to their hometowns from the USA without jobs or money. The Arizona law, which took effect Jan. 1, punishes Arizona employers who knowingly hire individuals without valid legal documents to work in the United States. Penalties include suspension of, or loss of their business license. The Mexican legislators are angry because their own citizens arereturning to their hometowns, placing a burden on THEIR state government. ‘How can Arizona pass a law like this?’ asked Mexican Rep Leticia Amparano-Gamez, who

represents Nogales. ‘There is not one person living in Sonora who does not have a friend or relative working in Arizona,’ she said, speaking in Spanish. ‘Mexico is not prepared for this, for the tremendous problems it will face as more and more Mexicans working in Arizona and who were sending money to their families return to their home-towns in Sonora without jobs,’ she said. ‘We are one family, socially and economically,’ she said of the people of Sonora and Arizona. Wrong! The United States is a sovereign nation, not a subsidiary of Mexico, and its taxpayers are not responsible for the welfare of Mexico’s citizens. It’s time for the Mexican government, and its citizens, to stop feeding parasitically off the United States and to start taking care of its/their own needs. Too bad that other states within the USA don’t pass a law just like that passed by Arizona. Maybe that’s the

Fun WikiLeaks facts revealed WikiLeaks has released a massive cache of secret cables, shedding light on geopolitical games and U.S. foreign-policy maneuvers. Buried among the quarter of a million documents there were also a few fun nuggets. Here they are:
Party animal

Qaddafi’s botox
Maybe the reason Qaddafi can’t leave his nurse’s side is that she administers his Botox. It could also be because he’s a hypochondriac. Qaddafi is almost obsessively dependent on his longtime Ukrainian nurse, Galyna Kolotnytska, who, according to one cable, is a “voluptuous blonde.” Qaddafi reportedly can’t travel without Kolotnystka, because she alone “knows his routine.” When her visa was delayed during Qaddafi’s trip to the U.S., the Libyan government sent a private jet to bring her to Portugal during Qaddafi’s rest stop. Why was Qaddafi resting in Portugal? Because he refuses to fly for more than eight hours and dislikes flying over water.
A diplomat writes that Silvio Berlusconi is “feckless, vain and ineffective as a modern European leader” and his “frequent late nights and penchant for partying hard mean he does not get sufficient rest.” The 74-year-old prime minister is in the spotlight for giving $9,200 to a teenage nightclub dancer named Ruby after one of these dinners.
The Pope pool
Well isn’t this awkward? U.S. intelligence was banking on a South American pope during the 2005 conclave to pick the next pope. American documents and an Italian newspaper report that Pope Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger was a surprise win to U.S. intelligence officials. Documents detail how government officials didn’t think Ratzinger would get past the first round of votes.

Maybe it’s love? Italy’s Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and Russia’s Vladimir Putin have been known to hold joint meetings on several occasions. But their special relationship was well documented in this recent document dump, and the Italian press was happy to remind readers of their holidays together, with Berlusconi going to the Black Sea with Putin and Putin vacationing in Berlusconi’s luxury villa in Sardinia.
Elton John in Kazakhstan
If glamour is not the first thing that comes to mind when Kazakhstan is mentioned, perhaps these cables may change your opinion: The political elite there is living la vida loca—drinking, dancing, and flying in pop stars for private concerts. A cable from 2008 details the birthday party of the president’s son-in-law, Timur Kulibayev, who celebrated the big four-one by flying in Elton John for a private concert. Kulibayev’s wife reportedly got a Nelly Furtado appearance for her birthday.

The great escape
The story of a dentist’s escape from Tehran probably has some movie studio types scrambling as fast as State Department officials—the story is pure Hollywood. Hossein Ghanbarzadeh Vahedi, a 75-year-old California dentist of Iranian descent, was trying to return home to the U.S. after a family visit, when Iranian officials confiscated his passport, demanding $150,000 and for Vahedi’s sons to stop promoting concerts by Persian pop singers. Instead, Vahedi stocked up on heart medication and hired two drug smugglers to lead him over the mountains to Turkey on horseback. He then crossed Turkey by bus and arrived at the U.S. embassy in Ankara, where diplomats found him “suffering some aches and pains” but “in good health.”

“Land mines,” replied the Kuwaiti woman. What does Santa call reindeer that don’t work? Dinner.
Christmas OneLiners for Starters Dear John Reply The soldier serving overseas and far from home was annoyed and upset when his girl wrote breaking off their engagement and asking for her photograph back. A creative fellow, he went out and collected from his buddies all the unwanted photographs of women that he could find, bundled them all together and sent them to her with a note stating the following: “Dear Mary, I can not remember which one is you ... please keep YOUR photo and return the others!”
Role Reversal A visitor, returning to Kuwait for the first time since the Gulf War, was impressed by a sociological change. On previous visits she noted that women customarily walked about 5 paces behind their husbands. She observed that the men now walked over 20 paces BEHIND their wives! She approached one of the women for an explanation: “What enabled women here to achieve this marvellous reversal of roles?”
Q1: Mum, can I please have a cat for Christmas: Ans: No. You’ll have turkey the same us the rest of us. Q2: What’s the most popular Christmas wine? Ans: ‘I don’t like Brussels sprouts!’ Q3: How do chickens dance at the Christmas party? Ans: Chick to chick! Q4: Why would you invite a mushroom to a Christmas party? Ans: He’s a fun guy to be with. Q5: What did the Spanish fireman call his twin sons? Ans: Hose A, and Hose B. Q6: Where do sheep get their hair cut? Ans: At the baa baa shop. Q7: What happened when the snowman annoyed the snow-woman? Ans. She gave him the cold shoulder.

Did you hear about the optometrist who fell into a lens grinder and made a spectacle of himself? Doctors tell us there are over seven million people who are overweight. These, of course, are only round figures. What is the purpose of reindeer? It makes the grass grow, sweetie. There were two ships. One was painted red. One was painted blue. They collided. At last report, the survivors were marooned. The other day I sent my girlfriend a huge pile of snow. I rang her up and asked, ‘Did you get my drift?’ Where do you find giant snails? Husband in Wal-Mart After my husband stopped working, he would accompany me on trips to Wal-Mart. Unfortunately, like most men, he found shopping boring and preferred to get in and get out. Yesterday I received the following letter from the local Wal-Mart.
July 19: Walked up to an employee and told her in an official voice, ‘Code 3 in Housewares. Get on it right away.’ This caused the employee to leave her assigned station and receive a reprimand from her Supervisor that in turn resulted with a union grievance, causing management to lose time and costing the company money.
Yes, that’s Richard, our boss!
August 4: Went to the Service Desk and tried to put a bag of M&Ms on layaway.
Dear Mrs. McJames, Over the past six months, your husband has caused quite a commotion in our store. We cannot tolerate this behavior and have been forced to ban both of you from the store. Our complaints against your husband, Mr. McJames, are listed below and are documented by our video surveillance cameras. June 15: Took 24 boxes of condoms and randomly put them in other people’s carts when they weren’t looking. July 2: Set all the alarm clocks in Housewares to go off at 5-minute intervals.
August 14: Moved a ‘CAUTION — WET FLOOR’ sign to a carpeted area. August 15: Set up a tent in the camping department and told the children shoppers he’d invite them in if they would bring pillows and blankets from the bedding department to which twenty children obliged. August 23: When a clerk asked if she could help him, he began crying and screamed, ‘Why can’t you people just leave me alone?’ EMTs were called. September 4: Looked right into the security camera and used it as a mirror while he picked his nose. September 10: While handling guns in the hunting department, he asked the clerk where the antidepressants were. October 3: Darted around the store suspiciously while loudly humming the ‘Mission Impossible’ theme. October 6: In the auto department, he practiced his ‘Madonna look’ by using different sizes of funnels. October 18: Hid in a clothing rack and when people browsed through, yelled ‘PICK ME! PICK ME!’
October 21: When an announcement came over the loud speaker, he assumed a fetal position and screamed, ‘OH, NO! IT’S THOSE VOICES AGAIN!’ And last, but certainly not least: October 23: Went into a fitting room, shut the door, waited awhile, then yelled very loudly, “Hey! There’s no toilet paper in here!” Hope you enjoyed this glimpse of one man’s retirement adventures!

Kobe Bryant will wear GRINCH Nike Shoes on Christmas game against Miami Heat “You’re a vile one, Mr. Grinch! You have termites in your smile. You have all the tender sweetness of a seasick crocodile, Mr. Grinch!” Something tells me I’m going to hear words to that legendary song from Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas and it isn’t just because the holiday season is upon us. It’s because Kobe Bryant plans to make his debut wearing the Grinch edition of the Nike Zoom Kobe VI displayed to your left on the Lakers’ Christmas Day game against the Miami Heat (first reported by The Basketball Jones’ Trey Kerby and displayed at marqueesole.com). It’s not exactly the prettiest site to see on your new plasma HD television and the brightness of the Black Mamba’s new shoe may make you spend all your Christmas money on seeing an eye doctor. Considering the shoes go on sale Dec. 26, you very may well have to decide spending your money between Kobe’s new kicks or getting your vision back. But Bryant wouldn’t have it any other way. On a day that will feature plenty of rhetoric and manufactured story lines regarding the supposed Heat-Lakers rivalry, Bryant is breaking out the shoes at the perfect time. It’s also seeming to follow a Lakers pattern in which they’re devising ways to throw wrenches in the manufactured hype surrounding the Heat. The obvious part first involves winning and playing like a team. The
second part entails Ron Artest announcing the winner of his charity raffle regarding his championship ring. And the third part now includes Bryant’s bright green shoes. Of course, some Lakers fans may take offense to this, given they hate anything remotely resembling the Celtics. But as long as it steers the endless conversation surrounding Miami, I’m sure fans will eventually embrace it.
ed n n a b ba by N Though no NBA player actually professed an interest in buying these special Athletic Propulsion Labs verticalinfluencing basketball shoes, you have to wonder if there are a series of floor-bound big men, the league over, that just had their Tuesday ruined by David Stern. This is a press release, and not an actual report from the frontlines, but it’s an interesting turn nevertheless.
The NBA has actually banned some shoes (which can be yours for only $300!) due to an apparent “unfair competitive advantage,” which will no doubt send the sales of these Athletic Propulsion Labs’ duds through the roof. I hope Messrs. Stern and Adam Silver bought some stock in this company before they made it infamous.

The Holiday Season Can Create Stress This time of year does much to create a feeling of joy and peace on earth. However, those of us who have been around a few years know that it often can lead to a more stressful time. Especially in this difficult economic environment we are in. This holiday season can be quite a stressful time with so much to prepare. The parties to go to, the presents to obtain, the relationships to mend and family to visit. It can actually feel much like we are fighting a battle, especially when we are in many of the stores or shopping malls, as we have seen in some recent headlines. The widely secular commercialization of the holidays may at times obscure the real meaning of this Christmas Season. For an example of how to overcome this season with stress under fire, consider the following story: “During a World War I battle on Christmas Eve, the evening wore on, fighting between the Germans and the British finally gave way to a confusing silence. After a short while, a lone soldier began singing “Silent Night.” Slowly others joined in until soldiers from both sides were singing together. Remarkably, it is told, the soldiers ended up spending the evening together playing a game of soccer rather than fighting.” Whether this story is true or not, nobody knows for sure. But that’s not so important, because the story exemplifies the true spirit of Christmas. We too, may want to learn some holiday stress strategies to help us maintain our composure when everyone else, especially our kids, in-laws and others seem to be losing theirs. -1st- Let’s recognize that this period between November 15th and the 2nd of January is a period of heightened stress. -2nd- Remember that “flexibility” is a friend not a foe. -3rd- Avoid DEBT if at all possible in these difficult times. Debt is an enemy! -4th- Practice Holiday Relaxation Exercises. -Lamaze techniques work in the check out line and at home as well as the labor room. “Hee-Hee-Ho!” -Gauge your emotions before you respond to others. -Daydream as you pass the time in lines. -Plan a break as you shop to enjoy the sights and sounds of the holidays. -5th- Take leave. Don’t depend on your days off to get things done. Be patient with yourself, and rest. -6th- Develop family traditions unique to your family. -7th- Start shopping early. Small trips often work better than trying to do it in one big blowout. -8th- Plan to give to someone less fortunate. Volunteer as a family to serve someone else. -9th- Keep the spirit of Christmas alive in the home. Remind yourself of the meaning of the festivities. -10th- Most of all, enjoy those around
you. Remember Christmas is a time of sharing and giving. Remember also that the holiday Season is a time with old and possibly unwanted memories that may pop up and damper the mood. Make a list of the losses as well as the positives of the year and the feelings they bring. Talk to a close friend or relative about those feelings. You may even want to find comfort in ways that link you to loved ones that have passed on. You may decide to wear a piece of clothing or jewelry that they owned. Or possibly consider making a small remembrance area where you would like to keep a picture or some mementos. Place a special ornament or maybe light a candle for them at a set time of the day. Just don’t pretend that the losses aren’t there if you do have them come up. Talk to someone

and try not to isolate yourself. You and those we have lost are worth the time and care. This time of year brings people together in joyful celebration, much like the beautiful Christmas songs we hear in the stores and on the radio. Yet, while some of the aspects of this holiday season may seem artificial, That wonderful feeling, the true spirit of Christmas that brings people together, even enemies — that much we know is definitely real and heartwarming. I pray all will have a great Holiday Season and remember all the joys and feelings that come with this time of year. Remember also our friends and family who may be away, deployed throughout the world at this time. May God bless and watch over them. Be safe and look forward to magnificent opportunities in the coming year. Happy Holidays!
It is my hope that this message will help you this week to, “mount up as on eagle’s wings,” and renew a little of your strength to keep moving forward and find joy… “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not be faint.”…(Isaiah 40:31) Until next time, may God bless you and may God continue to bless our great nation… SEMPER FI Chaplain Ringo, is the Command Chaplain at MCRD H&S BN,holds a Doctorate of Philosophy in Counseling, and is a Certified Trauma Specialist. www.yourchappy.com www.lifetraumasolutions.com www.serviceforhumanityfoundation.org

“Farming looks mighty easy when your plow is a pencil and you’re a thousand miles from the corn field.”
— Dwight D. Eisenhower
Dwight David “Ike” Eisenhower (October 14, 1890 – March 28, 1969) was a five-star general in the United States Army and the 34th President of the United States, from 1953 until 1961, and the last to be born in the 19th century. During World War II, he served as Supreme Commander of the Allied forces in Europe, with responsibility for planning and supervising the successful invasion of France and Germany in 1944–45, from the Western Front. In 1951, he became the first Supreme Commander of NATO.

Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego hosted the ninth-annual “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops” concert and telecast on Friday. From Bob Hope to Kid Rock, entertaining our nation’s troops has always been and continues to be the USO’s longest running, most celebrated and recognized tradition. Launched in 1941, early USO shows featured some of the most iconic stars of all time including Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Marilyn Monroe. Today, those shows are still vital to boosting troop morale, and VH1 is dedicated to working with the USO to continue this tradition in new and innovative ways. Over 26,000 troops and family attended the concert. Acts included Katy Perry, Sugarland, Keri Hilson, Nicki Mina, Jennifer Nettles, Grace Potter, Nancy Wilson, Kathy Griffin and Marisa Miller. The show was telecasted on VH1 at 9 p.m. Sunday Nov. 5th. Celebrities hit the stage and the red carpet in looks that either paid homage to the military’s legacy or rocked the soldiers’ worlds with eye-popping outfits. Keri Hilson, Perry and Jennifer Nettles took it back with their World War II-era style in the show’s opener, swishing about in spangled gold and white mini-dresses and military hats.

WHO PLAYED THE BEST
SANTA? We think it was Edmund Gwenn . . . who do you think? “Miracle on 34th Street” The great Edmund Gwenn shines as Kris Kringle, an elderly, eccentric man who may or may not be the real Santa Claus. Little Natalie Wood thinks he is, though, and that’s all that matters. This movie, written by Valentine Davies, has become, along with “It’s a Wonderful Life,” a Christmas classic, and deservedly so. It is not, I imagine, in the same league as the Capra film (what is?), but it’s an awfully good little movie in its own right. While it presents its characters and issues pleasingly it does not push the envelope too much in any one direction, as one can respond to its whimsical little story any way one
pleases. Like so many films of the immediate post-war period, it stresses the faith and wisdom of small children (as,—literally— opposed to adults); and its message is that children are perhaps wiser than we think. Considering the mess that grownups had made of the world in the previous two decades it must have been difficult for movie audiences of the time to disagree. Indeed, much of the mood of the postwar era was based at least partly on this premise, as children became central to our culture as never before. Their whims and wishes became paramount. Perhaps, in the end, too much so. One can see the start of all this in “Miracle On 34th Street,” whose gentle message still rings true today, every year, in the waning days of December.

Born Edmund Kellaway in Wandsworth, London, (some references suggest he was born in the Vale of Glamorgan, but this is incorrect; however, recent research suggests that both of his parents were Welsh), and educated at St. Olave’s School and later at King’s College London, Gwenn began his acting career in theatre in 1895. Playwright George Bernard Shaw was impressed with his acting, and cast him in the first production of Man and Superman, and subsequently in five more of his plays. Gwenn’s career was interrupted by his military service during World War I; however, after the war ended, he started appearing in films in London. (Cecil Kellaway was his cousin and Arthur Chesney was his brother.) Gwenn appeared in more than eighty films during his career, including the 1940 version of Pride and Prejudice, Cheers for Miss Bishop, Of Human Bondage, and The Keys of the Kingdom. He is perhaps best remembered for his role as Kris Kringle in Miracle on 34th Street, for which he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Upon receiving his Oscar, he said “Now I know there is a Santa Claus!” He received a second nomination for his role in Mister 880 (1950). Near the end of his career he played one of the main roles in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Trouble with Harry (1955). He has a small but hugely memorable role as a Cockney assassin in another Hitchcock film, Foreign Correspondent (1940) In theater, he starred in a 1942 production on Broadway of Anton Chekhov’s Three Sisters, which also starred Judith Anderson and Ruth Gordon. It was produced by and starred Katherine Cornell. Time magazine proclaimed it “a dream production by anybody’s reckoning — the most glittering cast the theater has seen, commercially, in this generation.” In 1954, Gwenn played Dr. Harold Medford in the classic science fiction film Them! with James Arness and James Whitmore. Edmund Gwenn died from pneumonia after suffering a stroke, in Woodland Hills, California. According to several sources, his last words, when a friend at his bedside remarked that “It is hard to die,” were: “But it is harder to do comedy.” However, a very similar deathbed saying was earlier attributed to a similarly named 19th-century English actor, Edmund Kean, so the association of the words with Gwenn may be erroneous.[citation needed] Gwenn was cremated and his ashes are stored in the vault at the Chapel of the Pines Crematory in Los Angeles, California. Edmund Gwenn has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1751 Vine Street for his contribution to motion pictures.

Milk: Healthy and nutritious drink, or fattening, contaminant-filled menace? By David Zinczenko
You might expect an organization Childbearing is called the Dairy Education Board to a very rewarding promote milk as a good thing. To counteract the Claim #1: “Milk is a fat-burning food.” physical effects The Truth: Maybe. In a 6-month study, University of Tennessee researchers of childbearing found that overweight people who and to restore downed three servings a day of calciumand enhance a woman’s figure, a Mommy Makeover can include: Breast Augmentation, Breast Lift, Breast Reduction, Tummy Tuck (abdominoplasty) and Liposuction. Each candidate is different and may require a combination or a variation of the procedures listed above. For instance, a full abdominoplasty involves the tightening of the muscle as well as excess skin and fat removal, while a mini-abdominoplasty is less extensive. Some women may choose a breast augmentation with a lift to correct severely deflated breasts, while others may prefer a breast reduction with a breast lift. Liposuction may be performed to sculpt the waist, back, hips and thighs. It’s important to refrain from implementing any of these surgical procedures until women have completed bearing children (if you plan to have more children, wait), that most of the baby weight has been lost through diet and exercise and that breastfeeding is finished. It is best to wait 4-6 months before any surgery to allow the body time to normalize. The results of a Mommy Makeover include the restoration of a pre-birth female figure that can be additionally improved with breast enhancement and body-contouring procedures. A smooth, flat abdomen and shapely hips and thighs reminiscent of prebirth silhouettes are also experienced. rich dairy lost more belly fat than those who followed a similar diet minus two or more of the dairy servings. In addition, the researchers discovered that calcium supplements didn’t work as well as milk. Why? They believe that while calcium may increase the rate at which your body burns fat, other active compounds in dairy (such as milk proteins) provide an additional fatburning effect. Claim #2: “Drinking milk builds muscle.” The Truth: Absolutely. In fact, milk is one of the best muscle foods on the planet. Milk is full of high-quality protein: about 80 percent casein and 20 percent whey. Whey is known as a “fast protein” because it’s quickly broken down into amino acids and absorbed into the bloodstream—perfect for post-workout consumption. Casein, on the other hand, is digested more slowly—ideal for providing your body with a steady supply of smaller amounts of protein for a longer period of time, such as between meals or while you sleep. Claim #3: “Cows are given antibiotics. Doesn’t that make their milk unhealthy?” The Truth: No one really knows. Some scientists argue that milk from cows given antibiotics leads to antibiotic resistance in humans, making these types of drugs less effective when you
take them for an infection. But this has never been proven. It is true that hormones and antibiotics have never been part of a cow’s natural diet, and they have been shown to have adverse effects on the animals. Canadian researchers, for example, discovered that cows given hormones are more likely to contract an udder infection called mastitis. If you’re uneasy, you can purchase antibiotic-free (and typically hormone-free, as well) milk from producers like Horizon and Organic Valley at most major supermarkets. The cows will certainly thank you. Claim #4: “Fat-free milk is much healthier than whole.” The Truth: Nope. While you’ve probably always been told to drink reduced-fat milk, the majority of scientific studies show that drinking whole milk actually improves cholesterol levels—just not as much as drinking fat-free does. One recent exception: Danish researchers found that men who consumed a diet rich in whole milk experienced a slight increase in LDL cholesterol (six points). However, it’s worth noting that these men drank six 8-ounce glasses a day, an unusually high amount. Even so, their triglycerides— another marker of heart-disease risk— decreased by 22 percent. The bottom line: Drinking two to three glasses of milk a day, whether it’s fat-free, 2%, or whole, lowers the likelihood of both heart attack and stroke—a finding confirmed by British scientists.

Top/Best Christmas Movies
Christmas embodies: family, friends and the joy of life.
“A Christmas Story” (1983)
The story proposes that Charlie Brown is convinced that the true meaning of Christmas has been forgotten by his Peanuts friends, not to mention the rest of the world. “Psychiatrist” Lucy advises Charlie Brown to get into the holiday spirit by directing the kids’ upcoming Christmas play. Despite his utter lack of control over his cast, Charlie Brown takes his job seriously, even setting out to find a genuine Christmas tree to decorate the set instead of the usual aluminum job. But Charlie Brown’s tree is a scrawny, pathetic thing, and all seems lost. That is, until the rest of the Peanuts gang decide to pitch in and decorate the woebegone tree. An instant hit when first telecast December 9, 1965
“A Charlie Brown Christmas” (1965)
There’s nary a scene to forget in this near-perfect nostalgic look at where
Americana and Christmastime meet. The story of a young boy’s epic quest to get his hands on a Red Ryder BB gun provides the hilarious backdrop for a timeless tale rife with family hijinks, frozen tongues and, of course, sexoozing leg lamps.
“It’s a Wonderful Life” (1946)
A tale of depression and almost-suicide doesn’t exactly scream “Christmas classic” — which is probably why Frank Capra’s flick flopped at the box office. But more than 30 years later, it endures as a beloved testament to everything
“Miracle on 34th Street” (1947)
If this ‘47 classic doesn’t make you a Santa believer, nothing (especially the ‘94 remake) will. It’s dark stuff for a Christmas flick — Kris Kringle is put on trail to determine if he’s legally insane — but the endgame (in which the US Postal Service saves the day!) is utterly heartwarming.
“National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” (1989)
Chevy Chase is at the top of his game in this sight-gag-and-one-liner-laden homage to the love/hate event that is the family Christmas.
“How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (2000) “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” is a 2000 American live-action film from Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment, based on the 1957 book of the same name by Dr. Seuss. Because the film is based on a children’s picture book, many additions had to be made to the storyline to bring it up to feature-length, including some information about the backstory of the title character. Most of the rhymes used in the book were used in the film, though some were slightly changed, and new rhymes were included in as well.
Bobby. They’re all unforgettable Will Ferrell personas, but the role he might be remembered for most in 50 years is Buddy the Elf (what’s your favorite color?) from the 2003 instant holiday classic. This non-stop laugher exemplifies all-ages entertainment.
“Joyeux Noel” (2006)
This moving Oscar-nominated drama tells the true story of German, French and Scottish troops in WWI who called a ceasefire for Christmas Eve. If they can find peace on earth for this most special of nights, surely you can grin and bear the in-laws.
“White Christmas” (1954)
Aren’t we all dreaming of a “White Christmas?” The movie starring Bing “Mr. Christmas” Crosby and Danny Kaye is as charming as the tune, with all the elements to warm the heart: Two GIs come home from WWII, fall in love with singing-and-dancing sisters and help their general with his failing Vermont inn. Awww.
“The Nightmare Before Christmas” (1993)
Sleigh bells and shrunken heads? They’re great together! Or so thinks Jack Skellington, who tries to take over Christmas in this awesomely ghoulish Tim Burton movie. With a sweet fable for kids and the torture of Santa for grown-ups, it’s like ‘The Grinch’ on acid. (Um, kid-friendly acid.)
“Elf” (2003)

Will Scorsese and De Niro Join Leo’s ‘Legacy?’
“Oh, please, it was not a ‘professional’ hit. They wait for you in the garage for that!” That’s what one of my friends, a very inside, insider — and a true cynic — says about rumors circulating around the murder last week of PR queen Ronni Chasen — shot five times while driving home from the premiere of “Burlesque.” Ronni was laid to rest Sunday — hundreds in the Hollywood community
paid their respects. I won’t repeat what my cynical friend had to say about the community and its sincerity. After all, I have a garage! SPEAKING OF professional hits, I have a scoop — perhaps even two — about Leonardo DiCaprio’s just-
epic about the assassination of John F. Kennedy. (Leo will star as FBI informant Jack Van Laningham, who headed the Bureau’s undercover operation against imprisoned Mob boss Carlos Marcello. Jack managed to wrest a confession from Marcello, about the Mafia’s ties to JFK’s assassination.) When this story broke in Variety, it was hinted that a “highly acclaimed” director who has worked with Leo before wants to direct the movie — based on Lamar Waldron’s book. Can you guess? But of course, it is Martin Scorsese, who knows his way around crime stories. Then there is the matter of casting the all-important role of Carlos Marcello. No official word on that, but when Jack Van Laningham was asked who he thought would make an ideal Marcello, the former lawman said, “Are you kidding? De Niro. Robert De Niro!” DiCaprio is said to be aiming for a movie that is “both powerful and accurate.”

MYSTERY I MP
THE MYSTERIOUS DEATH OF
NATALIE WOOD By Frank Wilkins
Foul Play on Catalina Island or Massive Cover-up? Natalie Gurdin was born in San Francisco in 1938, to Russian immigrants Nikolai and Maria. When she was just four years old she appeared as an extra in her first movie, Happy Land,” with her mother. Convince”d her daughter had that special screen presence, Maria moved her family to Los Angeles and changed Natalie’s named to Natalie Wood. Although she would eventually go on to appear in over 50 movies, she is probably best known for her role as little Susan Walker in the Christmas classic Miracle on 34th Street. By the time she had reached 18 years old, Natalie Wood was already a veteran of the screen with more than 30 movies in the can. In 1955, at a mere 17 years old, she starred in “Rebel Without a Cause” opposite James Dean. The Academy would honor her with a nomination for best supporting actress in this film. On her 18th birthday, Natalie would go on a studio-arranged date with Robert Wagner. After a year-long courtship, Natalie and Robert would marry on December 28, 1957. But Natalie would soon discover that juggling the fame of her movie-star lifestyle with her desire to lead a private life would be too much.
She soon found herself confused and depressed. After her divorce, brought about by the discovery of her husband’s sexual indiscretions with another man (Robert would always deny this) and with the aid of therapy, Natalie would get her career back on track. She would go on to star with Tony Curtis and Frank Sinatra in “Kings Go Forth” in 1958. Natalie’s Hollywood success could not be stopped. The
roles would continue in such classics as Splendor in the Grass”ctress nod), “West Side Story” (1961), Gypsy (1962) and “Love With the Proper Stranger “(1963) (which garnered her a third Best Actress nomination). Natalie’s Hollywood success would
not only gain her fame and fortune. It also shot her to the top of the desired female list which brought rumors that she dated practically every Hollywood leading man, including Warren Beatty, Frank Sinatra and even Elvis Presley. In spite of her reputation, her friends claimed that Natalie was a simple woman who wanted to settle down with her family As her acting career began to wane, she drifted from one affair to another but was not able to find happiness. She would become completely despondent on one summer night in 1966. She awoke in the hospital after taking an overdose of sleeping pills. Natalie would later admit, “I didn’t want to live.” After a brief three-year hiatus from the big screen, she would return to acting in
Forever Faithful
1969 as Carol Sanders in Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice. After that film, Natalie made a few appearances on television, but mostly spent time with her family. By now she had found love again, this time with agent Richard Gregson whom she married on May 30, 1969. The following year she gave birth to her first child, Natasha. However, now experiencing the happiest moments of her life, Natalie’s bliss would be shattered upon the discovery of husband Richard’s affair with her secretary. Natalie would immediately file for divorce. Subsequently, Natalie would reignite the flames with Robert Wagner. On July 16, 1972, Natalie and Robert remarried aboard a friend’s yacht harbored in Malibu. Natalie, determined to make her third marriage stick, quit her acting

MYSTERY I MP career and had her second child, Courtney on March 9, 1974. On Thanksgiving Day, 1981, the Wagners invited Christopher Walken, Natalie’s Brainstorm costar, to an informal thanksgiving weekend aboard their 55-foot cabin cruiser, the Splendor harbored at Marina del Rey. The oneman crew piloted the yacht to Catalina Island, off the Los Angeles coast of California. They anchored the boat and rode the yacht’s dinghy in to Avalon. The others stayed on shore in the hotel as Wagner moved the yacht to a safer mooring because of rough water. The next day, November 28, the four returned to the Splendor that was now anchored at Isthmus Cove. The evening began at about 4:00 p.m. as the trio dined at the Harbor Reef Restaurant. Witnesses claim that this is when things began to unravel. Waitresses at the restaurant saw the trio drink several bottles of cha.m.pagne and state that the three patrons eventually caused a rude and rowdy ruckus with Natalie openly flirting with Walken. They left the restaurant in a drunken mess, boarded a small dinghy and motored to the Splendor. Exactly what happened from this point forward will probably always be a bit unclear. Walken, Wagner and Wood continued their partying as Captain Davern began his last rounds of shutting down the boat. At around 12:20 a.m. Davern noticed that the dinghy was gone. Davern simply assumed Natalie had taken it, as was her custom, to view the
evening stars. When she didn’t return minutes later, Davern notified Wagner of her absence who immediately set out in another dinghy to look for her. At about 1:00 a.m. Wagner notified the harbor patrol to scout for her. At around 3:30 a.m. the Coast Guard was added to the search party. At 7:30 a.m. helicopters would discover her body, floating face down some two hundred yards from the boat. The small dinghy was discovered adrift, with four life vests aboard, some two hundred yards from her body. Several stories about the details of Natalie’s death would begin to surface. Wagner’s people continue to assert that Natalie drowned when she slipped into
the icy water after becoming annoyed by the incessant pounding of the tiedup dinghy on the side of the yacht. Police concluded that after changing clothes into a nightgown, knee-highs and a down jacket, Natalie took the dinghy, perhaps to go to the hotel ashore. However while untying the
dinghy, she slipped, striking her head on the side of the boat and fell into the chilly water. She drowned after being pulled under by the heavy, drenched coat. Los Angeles County coroner to the stars, Dr. Thomas Noguchi had his own Natalie Wood theory. He concluded the actress did indeed escape in the dinghy. She then slipped and fell into the harbor waters. She attempted to crawl up the sides of the rubber dinghy, but the heavy coat, now weighing 30-40 pounds prevented her from lifting herself into the boat. As Wood struggled to get into the dinghy, she noticed it slowly drifting away out into the harbor. She beca.m.e more and more frightened and began to screa.m. but her yells were drowned out by the loud stereo of some local revelers. Natalie grabbed the side of the dinghy and began to steer it toward the shore. She eventually succumbed to the cold, and slipped into death shrouded in her nightgown and red down coat. Natalie Wood was 43 years old. We’ll probably never know what really happened that night. Wagner and Walken refuse to talk about it and eyewitness accounts don’t really match up with all the facts. The official coroner’s report states the following: a private searcher who located the dinghy says that the key was in the ignition, which was in the off position. The gear was in neutral and the oars tied down. It appeared the boat had not even been used. The condition of Natalie’s body created a need for a large a.m.ount of cosmetic work for her funereal presentation. The official coroner’s report states the following about the condition of Natalie’s body: body was taken from the ocean and placed in the
hyperbaric cha.m.ber building for safe keeping. Upon the investigator’s arrival at location, decedent observed Lying in “stokes litter” (military style stainless steel rescue cage). Decedent is wrapped in plastic sheet, she herself is dressed in flannel nightgown and socks. The jacket that she was wearing when found floating, is no longer on the body, having come off when she was pulled from the water. At the time decedent was pulled from water, sheriff’s personnel says that body was absent of any rigor and they noted foa.m. coming from mouth. Rigor is now present of a 3 to 4 throughout entire body. Decedent has numerous bruises to legs and arms. Decedent’s eyes are also a bit cloudy appearing. No other trauma noted and foul play is not suspected at this time. Natasha, Natalie’s 11-year-old daughter, requested that her dia.m.ond earrings be placed on her mother’s ears. Robert Wagner insisted on burying her in a fox-fur coat that he had not yet given to her. Her gardenia-clad casket was buried in Westwood Memorial Park in Los Angeles on December 2, 1981. Attending her funeral were numerous celebrities including Sir Laurence Olivier, Rock Hudson, Gregory Peck and Elizabeth Taylor. Also in attendance were Robert Wagner and Christopher Walken.

The movie, also starring Chris Kattan, JoBeth Williams and Leelee Sobieski, was screened recently in New York to

Balanzza’s ergonomic Mini Luggage Scale from Magellan’s is a digital device which allows you to check if your suitcase is overweight; if so, you can repack and avoid airline fees. 7. My final gizmo recommendation is the pocket-sized Powermonkey, also from Magellan. It holds a charge for up to a year, comes with various adaptors and provides emergency power to portable electronics, e.g., iPods, most cell-phones, digital cameras, etc. Its travel pouch makes it easy to store.

1. I recently discovered a clever way to get a second carry-on aboard when you fly. How? By wearing the Magellan Travel Vest. It features five exterior pockets and three interior ones. I load it up with everything needed during the flight including snacks, a paperback, pens, notepad and a camera. It’s TSA-proof and has become a favorite, because it’s stylish as well as functional. 2. Have you ever lost a cap in the wind when you are on a boat or in a convertible? You won’t have to worry with the “hat-leash,” which has a powerful alligator clip and lead that attach your cap to your collar. It’s simple and works; no more “fly-away” headgear. 3. Another gift suggestion from Magellan’s is a pair of travel slippers for inflight or hotel use. They are comfortable, lightweight and fold into their own small mesh bag. 4. I’ve had a Tilley Hat for several years and see why they have a cult-like following. Don’t tell her, but my wife will have one soon (model LT6b). It is stain repellent, packs easily, retains it shape and is very durable; it’s a classic.

Seaport Village. My suggestion is the unique Stowaway Diamond. It folds into a convenient, foot-long sleeve and fits into a backpack, briefcase or carry-on. 9. The venerable Entertainment Book has a new feature this season. Along with your hometown edition, chock full of coupons for restaurants, sightseeing, attractions, hotels and travel, you can buy a one-month membership which provides discounts in cities nationwide for only $4.95 or $30 for the year. Quite a deal. 10. My last suggestion allows you to put everything mentioned above into a new product, the AirBak Focus Tech backpack. Its patented support system shifts the majority of weight off the upper back/shoulders onto the hips, waist and lower back while resting on
a built-in air cushion. It is comfortable to carry, well designed and has lots of interior nooks and crannies for storage.

THE FORGOTTEN WAR 1950 – 1953
The Korean War has been called the “Forgotten War,” historically overshadowed by World War II and Vietnam, though it figures prominently in the development of events. The Korean War was one of the first episodes of the Cold War and involved many of the great personalities of the era: Truman, MacArthur, Mao, and Stalin. The Korean War began in the early hours of June 25, 1950, when North Korean troops crossed the 38th parallel and invaded South Korea. The war featured some of the most intense fighting ever experienced by American soldiers — and some of the worst conditions. Nearly 37,000 American servicemen lost their lives in three years, the majority of losses concentrated in the first year. This is a significantly higher figure per year than the 58,000 American casualties spread over ten years in Vietnam. There were both severe trials and staggering accomplishments during the war: the humiliating retreat of inexperienced U.S. soldiers in the opening days of the war; the brilliant Inchon landings masterminded by MacArthur; the grittiness exhibited in Chosin by the 1st Marine Division surrounded by a vast Chinese force; and the savage hill fighting during the last years of the conflict.
Phase I: Caught Off Guard
Phase II: Almost Victory
Pre-War:
Inchon Landings:
Invasion:
Battle for Seoul:
An obscure country in the far reaches of Asia, Korea was all but forgotten by the American public and policymakers alike. Split into two states headed by competing leaders, Korea would soon explode onto the American consciousness.
In the early hours of June 25, 1950, 135,000 North Korean troops invaded a sleeping South Korea. With Sovietdesigned invasion plans, the wellequipped and well-trained force shocked and overwhelmed the illequipped and scattered South Korean army.
Task Force Smith:
General MacArthur intended Task Force Smith as “an arrogant display” of power. Vastly outnumbered and outgunned, and with little training and no exp erience, Task Force Smith was humiliated in the first battle between North Korean and American troops.
Defense of Pusan:
After defeat and retreat, American forces found themselves trapped in the southeastern corner of Korea. Facing total defeat, American troops held the line — and created the opportunity for the tide to turn.
Page 36 December 15, 2010 THE MILITARY PRESS
The Inchon invasion was the last brilliant chapter of MacArthur’s career. In one of the Navy’s and Marine Corp’s finest hours, the X Corps executed a near impossible operation flawlessly — taking the port of Inchon and changing the course of the war.
The battle for Seoul raged for four days. Marines engaged in fearsome street battles with the NKPA. Retaking the capital city proved to be both an important strategic and symbolic victory.
North to the 38th:
While the X Corps were busy in the north, Gen. Walker’s Eighth Army and ROK units steamrolled across South Korea, driving the NKPA into the waiting arms of the X Corps.
Race to the Yalu:
The Allies poured into North Korea, capturing the port of Wonsan and Pyongyang and quickly arriving at the Chinese border. Victory was in sight — but the war was about to take a bloody turn.
HISTORY I MP
Phase III: “An Entirely New War The Chinese Counterattack
Victory appeared imminent when the Allies approached the Yalu River. But a massive Chinese force slipped undetected across the river. The Chinese staged a fierce counteroffensive that drove the Eighth Army to below the 38th parallel.
The Chosin Reservoir Campaign
As the X Corps retreated along the Chosin Reservoir to the port of Hungnam, the 1st Marine Division engaged in a brutal series of battles with the Chinese in below zero temperatures, triumphing against overwhelming odds.
Allies Rebound
Within two months the Chinese offensive had pushed the Allies below Seoul to the 37th parallel. But under the dynamic leadership of Gen. Matthew Ridgway, the Allies soon regained the offensive.
years to bridge the gulf between the two sides. An uneasy armistice was signed in July 1953.
POWs:
The issue of POWs was hot for both sides. Abuse of UN prisoners and the repatriation of Communist prisoners were explosive issues. POW concerns persist today, as veteran organizations continue to advocate for MIA POWs.
Stalemate:
As truce talks gathered steam in November 1951, the two sides settled into a bloody stalemate along the 38th parallel. Gritty hill battles and small clashes predominated, and neither side gained significant advantage.
Post-War:
Since the war, a tense standoff has endured between the two Koreas. Recently, however, unprecedented summit talks were held between north and south. These may finally begin the process of bringing an official end to the war.
Phase IV: No End In Sight Negotiation:
Truce talks began in July of 1951, but it would take over two For advertising information call: (858) 537.2280

Real estate for the wealthy
This week’s Top 10 home features at www.TopTenRealEstateDeals.com include an odd mix of wealthy guys who are trying to sell their homes. The Sultan of Brunei, who owns 7,000 cars, a gold-plated bathroom and a $3 billion theme park, has his Las Vegas estate on the market reduced from $60m to $37.5m. Donald Trump, also very rich but apparently losing money everyday with some bad real estate, just listed his Southern California home for $12m. And Kareem AbdulJabbar, who is not as rich as the Sultan and the Donald but is the all-time NBA scoring champion, is selling his Harlem home with extra-high ceilings for $3.1m — down from $3.5m. Also listed are some neat auctions in the Bahamas and New York. Real estate is never boring at Top Ten Real Estate Deals. Military Press Café West Side Story opens at Broadway San Diego — January 4-9, 2011 More than fifty years ago, a show about New York City changed musical theatre forever. Now, it’s come home to make history once again. From the first notes to the final breath, WEST SIDE STORY is one of the most memorable musicals and greatest love stories of all time. Arthur Laurents’ book remains as powerful, poignant and timely as ever. The score by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim — a collection of standards that includes “Tonight,” “America,” “Maria,” “I Feel Pretty” and “Somewhere” — is widely regarded as one of the best ever written. And the extraordinary, Tony-winning choreography by Jerome Robbins completely changed the language of Broadway dance. This groundbreaking new production offers a bold new design that builds on the show’s raw power and emotion to create a fresh experience unlike any that came before it. Don’t miss this thrilling presentation of a matchless work of art. For more information visit broadwaysd. com
