If you don’t understand Paul Ryan’s points, stop pretending you do.
By Dacia Nichol In a pathetic attempt to paint Congressman Paul Ryan as someone who’s a hypocrite, there’s been some pretty disgraceful rhetoric and accusations swirling around the blogosphere and Twitterville regarding some dug up news about his personal history. So here’s the deal. A Wisconsinbased think tank called The Wisconsin Interest did a very nice write up on Ryan in July of last year. I’m assuming that this has just now been dug up due to Ryan’s State of the Union Response. In it, the story of Ryan finding his father dead when Ryan was only 16 is described, an event which was followed by his family receiving social security money to aid them in their father’s absence. Ryan received money until he turned 18. Here’s where the spin starts. Ryan put the money he received away in savings to be later used toward his college education. So in effect, a government entitlement program gave him a “hand up” to pursue a better life. I know. The nerve! It’s like that was what entitlement programs were made for. Why is this trumped as a big deal? Because Paul Ryan preaches about how our entitlement programs have gone beyond the “safety net” that they’re supposed to provide and turned them into a “hammock”, making people essentially lazy and complacent. Except none of the articles screaming about Ryan’s hypocrisy talk about his support for a “social safety net”, even though he mentions it every time he talks about entitlement reform. To break it down: Entitlements (raised to the “bad” power) = Hammocks / Paul Ryan’s SS payments = Hypocrisy! What’s happening here is that for some reason, and I really don’t get it other than it being a product of some ridiculous ideology, the mere idea of reforming social security and/or Medicare is always met by the same chorus of fear-mongering claims every time a suggestion is made. The facts are pretty clear. These programs are an impending disaster with shock effects coming that no one will like or benefit from. Paul Ryan has put forward some
serious solutions and the opposition just responds with lies. Who do they first appeal to? Seniors. They say he’s going to “pull the rug” out from people in the “twilight of their lives.” Actually, they basically tell retired folks that Paul Ryan is the boogie man and he’s going to take all their money. Why would they say that when Ryan’s plan doesn’t touch anyone over the age of 55? Your answer is as good as mine. Then they get into the Wall Street investment thing, i.e., Ryan’s plan to allow people to invest their retirement money in the stock market rather than the government’s coffers. Insert line about instability of the market and the ups and downs over the last few years. Except they don’t mention how members of Congress are vested into a very successful system that yes, is invested in Wall Street. Why criticize something that’s obviously effective enough to use for government representatives? Most of them lately however, don’t even bother with even those details. They just point out that Ryan received social security at one point in his life, screaming that he’s a hypocrite. The article saying so is retweeted and retweeted and retweeted until…every liberal who believes 140 characters of spin over reality thinks they know everything they need to know about this Paul Ryan character. Nevermind that every time (and I do mean every time) he is interviewed he specifically states that he believes America should, in fact, have a social safety net. His problem with social security and Medicare? They’re insolvent. They’re going to go belly up. They’re going to become a fiscal disaster. They’re doomed. They need to be fixed. He doesn’t have a problem with social welfare programs being used for helping people help themselves. That’s what they were always there for. A “just in case”. A protection to ensure that our citizens aren’t starving or living on the streets. Do they work that way now? No. And he wants to fix them, not eliminate them. Maybe his opponents just don’t understand him. Too much wonk, not enough wank talk. Well, if you don’t understand Paul Ryan, stop pretending you do.

Cancer-Stricken 10-Year-Old Granted Wish to Join the Army By Zachary Roth Most kids might hope to get an Xbox or an iPod Touch for their 10th birthday. Brennan Daigle got a reception from a formation of soldiers, a ride in a camouflaged National Guard Humvee-and induction as an honorary member of the Army. Since October 2009, Brennan, from Sulphur, Louisiana, has been battling embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma- — a rare form of cancer in which muscular tumors attach themselves to bones, reports the Fort Polk Guardian. Last month, doctors told his family there was nothing more they could do, and gave Brennan just weeks to live. Brennan has always loved the Army. His mother had created a Facebook page — Brennan’s Brigade — to keep family and friends informed of his condition. People from around the world, including soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, have left comments of encouragement and support. One group of soldiers in Afghanistan posted a picture of themselves holding an American flag, and told Brennan: “We’re flying this flag in honor of you; we’re here to back you. Stay Army strong.” Becky Prejean, who runs a charity for sick kids called Dreams Come True of Louisiana, heard about Brennan’s illness, and got in touch with his mother, Kristy Daigle. Brennan’s greatest wish, Daigle told Prejean, was to meet some soldiers in person, before his illness

worsened. So the two women contacted the Fort Polk Community Relations Office, which put out a call for a few soldiers to attend Brennan’s tenth birthday on Feb. 26. Forty showed up. Brennan had been told he was going fishing with his father. But when he got out of his dad’s truck, he was greeted by a formation of 1st MEB soldiers, standing at attention in front of a National Guard Humvee. After a moment, they all shouted “Happy Birthday, Brennan!,” and broke into applause. Brennan was speechless, according

to his mother. “All he could do was giggle,” she said. Brennan and his best friend Kaleb were invited to check out the Humvee, and Brennan sat behind the wheel. Then soldiers took the two boys out for a spin. Afterward, Brennan and Kaleb put their heads out the hatch on the vehicle’s roof, while the crowd snapped pictures. But it wasn’t over. Brennan got out of the Humvee and was led to the front of the formation, where he shook hands with each soldier. He was inducted into the Army as an honorary member, then
given a coin symbolizing merit and excellence, as well as a military jacket with his name on the pocket, and other Army-themed gifts. “Brennan, you exemplify what personal courage means,” Pfc. Kamesha Starkey, 1st MEB, told him. Finally, the mayor of Sulphur, La., gave Brennan a key to the city, and the title of Honorary Mayor of the Day. “Words can never express what I felt seeing all those soldiers there, knowing some of them had just come back from Iraq and still took time out for just one little boy,” Kristy Daigle said. “Just to know that they care enough to give their all, to give their love and support to a little boy is phenomenal. It says so much about our men and women who serve our country in the armed forces.” Some of the soldiers said the event helped put things in perspective for them. “It was good to be able to give back,” Pfc. Kyle Frederick said. “It opened my eyes to a lot of things: How I take my kids for granted, how lucky we are, how we complain on a day-to-day basis and we really have it good compared to others.” As for Brennan, it took a while for his new honor to sink in. The next day, he asked his mother, “Am I really in the Army?” “You most certainly are,” she answered. “They don’t swear in just anyone.” “That’s awesome,” said Brennan.

Really enjoyed the excerpt from Alan’s book in your essential reading section in the March 1 issue. I think that “Armed Humanitarians, the Rise of Nation Builders” by Nathan Hodge might be worth reviewing in essential reading. It looks at events and policy changes the military has been involved in the past 10 years. He asks the question of what should be the role of the military in the world’s hotspots now and in the future. Interviews of folks of many ranks make it unique among the usual news stories. Hey MP,
their hand over their heart. I think these days that not enough patriotism is instilled in the young people of America. Don’t they know how fortunate they are to live here? Public Law 110 states that all persons present in uniform should render the military salute. Members of the Armed Forces and veterans/retirees who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute or place their hand over their heart to render respect to the U.S. flag. All other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart. John Alexander, recognized sixty Sailors who received tax-free reenlistment bonuses totaling more than $3.4 million during the ship’s deployment, Feb. 28. The Sailors, who work on some of the most sophisticated weapons and engineering systems in the world, reenlisted to serve an additional 324 years in jobs the Navy considers critical to the success of the fleet. In addition to added job stability, Sailors paid no taxes on their bonuses or any of their income because the
ship was serving in a combat zone as directed by the Combat Zone Tax Exclusion. This tax advantage added as much as $30,000 to some bonuses at the $90,000 award level. The Selective Reenlistment Bonus (SRB) program is the Navy’s primary monetary incentive to encourage the retention of Sailors with critical skills and valuable experience. The Navy encourages all Sailors to take advantage of reenlistment bonuses as soon as eligibility requirements are met. The Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group is currently operating in the 7th Fleet area of responsibility supporting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts to establish conditions for regional stability.

Secret VA benefits for seniors The Vets Resource This is the fourth in a series of “secrets” revealed by author Victoria L. Collier, JD, in her book “47 Secret Veterans’ Benefits for Seniors, Benefits You Have Earned... but Don’t Know About”
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, may be a presumptive service connected disease. If you were diagnosed with ALS while on active duty or within one year from your date of discharge, your disease may be presumed to be service connected. If you were not diagnosed while in service or within a year of discharge, but you can prove with medical evidence or otherwise that you now have ALS, and that you had symptoms of ALS within the oneyear period following discharge, you may still be eligible for service connected benefits. If you have a condition that is listed on the presumed illnesses list, then you would only need to apply for VA compensation benefits without the additional necessity to provide information that would otherwise link your illness to your service. I was giving a presentation on veterans’ benefits to a group of lawyers. The speech was focused primarily on non-service connected benefits available to seniors. However, I did mention the presumptive listings for service connected conditions. After the
presentation, a lawyer approached me and said he was in Vietnam. To every man that I know who served in Vietnam, my first comment is: If you are ever diagnosed with prostate cancer (which many men are), FILE A CLAIM FOR BENEFITS. Because he was African-American (thus at higher risk), I also told him that if he is ever diagnosed with diabetes type II, to file a claim. He shared with me that he does have diabetes type II and that, just the week before, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He had no idea he could file a claim for VA service connected benefits, and that his illnesses were presumed to be due to his military service. Alternative sentencing approved for vets with PTSD
Legislation approved by a House committee would allow veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or traumatic brain injury (TBI) to receive treatment when they are convicted of a crime House Bill 1081, by state Rep. John Bennett, would allow a judge to send a military veteran convicted of a crime to the Department of Veterans Affairs for treatment if the defendant was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Bennett, a Marine who served in both Iraq and Afghanistan, said the PTSD or TBI would have to be servicerelated and have contributed to the commission of the crime. “Many veterans are struggling to cope with PTSD and TBI, and are not seeking the treatment they need,” Bennett, R-Sallisaw, said. “My legislation will help them to get treatment, which I believe they have earned through their service to our country. This is not an opportunity for someone to commit a crime and blame it on PTSD. You have to be diagnosed with the condition, it has to be service-related, and it has to have played a role in the commission of the crime.” The program could ultimately save taxpayer dollars because the alternative sentencing/treatment programs would be far less expensive than automatic incarceration, Bennett noted. House Bill 1081 passed unanimously in the House Judiciary Committee. It now awaits a vote on the floor of the Oklahoma House of Representatives.

Supreme Court rules for veterans
The leader of The American Legion praised the unanimous decision of the Supreme Court which ruled that the 120-day requirement to file an appeal with the Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims is not concrete — that an individual may take longer if circumstances warrant. The court’s ruling will certainly make a difference in the outcomes of many veterans’ appeals,” said Jimmie L. Foster, national commander of the nation’s largest veterans organization which had filed an amicus brief in the case Henderson v. Shinseki. Mr. Henderson served on active military duty from 1950 to 1952. He was discharged in 1952 after being diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, for which he has established service connection and currently has a 100 percent disability rating. In August of 2001, he filed a claim for monthly compensation with the Department of Veterans Affairs (“VA”) Regional Office (“RO”), based on his need for inhome care. The RO denied the claim, and he appealed to the Board. The appeal was denied on August 30, 2004. On January 12, 2005, Henderson filed a notice of appeal with the Veterans Court, fifteen days after the expiration of the 120-day appeal period. In its ruling, the court held that the deadline for filing a notice of appeal with the Veterans Court can be modified for good cause. “Our veterans sacrifice so very much serving in combat thousands of miles from home,” Foster said. “They deserve every opportunity and consideration in applying for the benefits they earned through their service. The American Legion is proud to have been a friend of the court in this litigation.”

Amazing Hope for Unsightly Toenail Fungus It was about 15 years ago that I first noticed my large toenail was starting to discolor, appeared thicker and would begin to crumble when i attempted to trim with clippers. For many years I ignored it and found it to be a minor annoyance. Not sure of the timeline, but I began to notice that my other toenails were starting to show the same signs of infection, and at a increasingly alarming rate. Living in southern california, wearing flip-flops is the norm, and now I was becoming incredibly self-conscious wearing them. My toenails had become very unsightly, they had also started to distort, break off in parts and I felt like a leper. I used to think that they would simply clear up after time. I have always had reasonably good personal hygiene, sometimes even excessive as I would take three to four showers a day. Now I felt ‘unclean’ and started searching for answers. Came to find out that I had Onychomycosis (also known as “Dermatophytic onychomycosis,” In layman’s terms: Ringworm of the nail. It is the most common disease of the nails and constitutes about a half of all nail abnormalities. I soon began to notice that a lot of other people around me had a similar condition. Living close to the beach, almost everyone walks in sandals or barefoot. The prevalence of onychomycosis is about 6 to 8% in the adult population, and CAREER TRAINING

much, much higher in beach areas. Toenail fungus is an infection that affects nearly 23 million people in the U.S. – about 10% of all adults. I started buying every topical fungal remedy available at the local pharmacy. I’d soak my feet in bleach, I’d apply hydrogen peroxide before going to bed. Nothing seemed to show any sign of improvement. The Internet was inundated with home remedies. I tried many of them, even applied Vick’s Vapor Rub which made my nails turn black and even more unsightly. I decided to consult with a doctor as I’d read about an oral medication — Lamisil — only to find out that it can be extremely dangerous as it can damage the liver, especially in those that consume alcohol. I resigned myself to just putting up with this unsightly condition until I had the opportunity to hear about Dr. Worley (The Foot Doctor of La Jolla). Dr. Worley is a specialist in Podiatry and had begun focusing on new laser technology to treat nail fungus with promising results. I made an appointment as soon as I could. Meeting Dr. Worley was a pleasure. He has such a calming demeanor that I relaxed right from the start. He explained how these new lasers work in killing off the fungi while leaving the nail and surrounding tissue unharmed. The lasers work by shining a laser light through the toenail that vaporizes the fungus. Without further adieu, I signed up for a treatment. Dr. Worley began by cleaning and clipping the nails very short. He then spent about 5 minutes pin-pointing a pencil sized laser at each toenail. It was a completely painless procedure, I didn’t feel a thing. After the treatment, Dr. Worley gave me a print out of post nail care that includes applying a special anti-
fungal solution as well as suggesting the regular use of athletes foot medication. It has been two months and I am already beginning to see a visible improvement in my nails. My condition was so severe that I will probably have to go back for a few follow-up treatments. I am so excited to have found Dr. Worley. This is the first time in 15 years that I am actually beginning to see the condition of my toenails improve. I’ll be making timely reports on my progress in future issues, stay tuned. • Keep a calendar or journal with your study goals and important dates clearly marked-and look at it every day (a calendar can’t help you if it’s closed!) • Determine what time is best for you to study. Is it after dinner on Wednesdays when your partner is at bowling? Is it Saturday mornings when the kids are at soccer? • Take breaks-walk around and stretch. Drink some water or have a light snack. If you’re studying nutrition or health topics, you know how important this is! • If possible, have a dedicated study place with all the supplies you might need (computer, paper, pens, calculator, etc.) • Pace yourself. Don’t over extend yourself. There’s a reason it takes several years to graduate from traditional university. You’re in this to learn, not just to get a certificate, so make sure you’re learning, not just racing through the materials.

Lots to do for retired folks At one point in the 2008 Oscar-nominated film “Frost/Nixon,” former President Richard Nixon, played by Frank Langella, says, “Retired people are the most bored people in the world.” While some retirees might scoff at that remark, others no doubt agree there’s an element of truth to it. Perhaps boredom is one reason many seniors continue to work past retirement age. According to the Congressional Research Service (CRS), 47 percent of male seniors and 34 percent of female seniors were employed in 2007. That those figures were from 2007 is significant, as it indicates this was before the economic downturn of 2008-09, a consequence of which was more seniors returning to the workforce. For many seniors, though, working isn’t simply a means to earn money. In fact, seniors who continued working past the age of 70 earned an average of just $20,000 in 2007. Seniors also tend to work to have something to do. For seniors looking to do just that, there are a host of employment or even volunteer opportunities that can help seniors stay busy and possibly put a little extra money in their pockets.

• Local park service. Many local park services hire seniors to help keep the parks clean. These are often seasonal opportunities, making them ideal for seniors who live in different cities depending on the seasons. • Golf course. Golf courses are other seasonal businesses, at least in much of the country, that also boast lots of part-time opportunities for seniors. For example, golf courses need rangers, who ensure all golfers play by the rules and respect the course, and even maintenance staff, who do everything from cut the grass to maintaining gardens. These can also pull double duty, providing seniors with daily exercise to help them stay healthy. • Volunteer. Many programs that help indigent citizens get by every day

welcome seniors as volunteers. Meal delivery services and other programs that cater to the sick are often in need of a helping hand. • School systems. Local school districts also have volunteer opportunities that can be ideal for seniors. Bursting onto the scene in 1992, he is most remembered as the love-interest-biker George in “Erin Brokovich,” to the romantic comedy “Love Happens” to Harvey Dent in “Batman,” now he comes to us as SSgt. Michael Nantz in “BATTLE: LA.” Recently I was thrilled to have a few moments with Aaron Eckhart to talk film, aliens and he appreciation of our U.S. military. Aaron, thanks for taking the time to talk with us today, I know your schedule is crazy right now. We love the guys and really love the Military Press. Do you want to say anything to the guys? Yes! A year ago I went to Afghanistan with the USO and to Khandahar and you guys took such good care of me and I’m looking forward to going back. I hope that you like the film. What else can I say? I was at Comic-Con last year, when you walk into a room everyone goes crazy?

I know, its crazy and I love it. How did you get involved in the film? I came into a meeting with Jonathan Liebesman, the director, for the first time and he was showing me footage of Marines in Fallujah doing house to house combat and he said, “That’s what I want our movie to look like” and I said I’m in. We needed a war movie that had aliens in it and I have to thank Jonathan for giving me the part. So tell us about the film? I like to talk about this because it s a military movie and I hope everyone out there likes it, especially the Marines. We tried to do it right with our Lt. Colonel, the support of the Narines and everyone there and our gunny. We went through the boot camp and really tried to get it right with all our weaponry with the 50 cal and everything. It was just the best time of my life and the best movie I’ve ever made in terms of fun. I really feel like the Marines and the soldiers are going to feel like we tried to represent them well in the movie, professionally. Also to look and see them in a good light. What I’ve seen it looks very intense. Very intense, well aliens are taking over the world.
I think you did. I really hope the Marines like it. I hope we make them proud. I really do want to thank them so much for all they do because its just mind blowing to see it up close. I want them to know they really are appreciated. I know they would be thrilled to hear that Aaron. There you have it! An actor who jumps right in to thank those who have done so much for our country. “BATTLE: LA” opened in theaters March 11.

REMEMBER SELF, BUT DON'T FORGET GOD
The other night I had just returned from a road trip and watched one of my favorite movies that happened to be playing on TV, “Forrest Gump.” In the end of the movie Forrest is at Jenny’s graveside and recounting the many experiences and travels he had the blessing of experiencing along his life’s journey. He recounted the beautiful lakes, the sunsets and the peacefulness… I had the opportunity to enjoy the similar beauty of the countryside the previous few days. I have always enjoyed being on the road and traveling. I have been blessed to see most of this country many times, not like Forrest running from coast to coast to coast, but in a car and truck many times over. There is beauty everywhere I go. But many do not realize or appreciate this and other of life’s beauties until the ability to enjoy them is taken away. A few years ago I had an awesome experience on the road of this journey we call life. On this particular weekend I supervised and participated in a retreat for 30 military personnel who were residing in the barracks, one with extra security and barbed wire around it. You may know it as the Brig. However, those in this facility were longing to grow and accomplish good things in their life, much like most of us desire to do. We shared with them life-changing principles that we all can use to strengthen our resolve and ability to accomplish the goals and dreams we have for ourselves. I saw those who some write off as losers or troubled (much like many did to Forrest in the movie…), reflect on what was truly most important in this life and how they could develop attributes and skills to get there. As a Chaplain and a counselor to many, I wish I saw more often the true desire that I saw that weekend, in those I counsel who are not incarcerated, who have so many more opportunities to get what they want if they would only harness the power within and do it. Many of us limit ourselves with our own negative thinking. It is so important to remember that we are the ones who limit our ability to get things done in most cases. We can accomplish almost anything we put our mind to if we just remember that “our past does not equal our future” and that with God all things are possible. It is also important to first take care of self to be able to have the strength and capabilities to fulfill our desires. One example of this from that weekend was one Marine who expressed his frustration over his wife regularly asking him to take out the trash. He felt that it was something so silly to get into fights about. Howev-
er, he resisted doing it whenever she asked or he would take it out to the back porch, but not to the outside trashcan. Many in the group tried to convince him to do it and he would see how it would make her happier. He resisted the advice. In the retreat we taught him how to reflect on how he felt about his wife and then write about it in a particular way. Then, on his own the epiphany came. He approached one of our team members and shared the realization of how much he really loved his wife and that he should be willing to do most anything for his sweet companion. He finally let go, surrendered his pride, and now has the desire to tend to the trash long before she would even have need to ask. We all have the ability to gain control of our thoughts and move them to new heights of true fulfillment. I would like to share with you something to consider on this topic that I came across some time ago written by an unknown author. “To ‘Let Go’ Takes Love” To “let go” does not mean to stop caring.; it means I can’t do it for someone else. To “let go” is not to cut myself off, it is the realization I can’t control another. To “let go” is not to enable, but to allow learning from natural consequences. To “let go” is not to be protective; it is to permit another to face reality. To “let go” is not to try to change or blame another; it is to make the most of myself. To “let go” is not to be in the middle arranging all the outcomes, but to allow others to affect their own destinies. To “let go” is not to nag, scold, or argue, but instead to search out my own shortcomings and correct them. To “let go” is not to adjust everything to my own desires, but to take each day as it comes, and to cherish myself in it. To “let go” is not to care for, but to care about. To “let go” is not to fix, but to be supportive.

SHAME ON YOU By Reynold N. Mason
Two weeks ago the U.S Supreme Court ruled in the case of Snyder v Phelps, that Phelps and his legions of mindless disciples are free henceforth to go forth and wreak havoc at the funeral of fallen soldiers. What got the Westboro Baptist Church in hot water was its outrageous, obnoxious picketing at the funeral of Matthew Snyder, in Maryland a while back. Matthew Snyder was killed in Iraq and Phelps and his legions showed up at the funeral brandishing banners and placards bearing verbiage that ripped apart the heart of the fallen soldier’s father, his family and friends. Some of the obnoxious signs and placards bore the hateful words that have brought Westboro notoriety over the last few years. Church members have staged protests at 600 plus funerals with signs that read: “God Hates Fags” “Thank God For Dead Soldiers.” The Church is a snake pit of venom. And Phelps and his followers hiss and spew their hateful, hurtful slogans, like vipers, at the heart of those in

the throes of grief. Mr. Snyder simply wanted to bury his son in peace. Now his name will forever be linked with one of the most contentious free speech issues America has had to confront since Civil rights. Whatever else Phelps might hope to gain by his callous, backwards and obscene displays, he does succeed in gaining publicity. The media are drawn to Phelps’ freak shows, like moths to a candle. They must sell papers and they know
that anyone who dares to compound the grief of family and friends at a final farewell with epithets as vile as Phelps’ are sure to incur the ire of decent people. The quest for notoriety drives Phelps and his motley band of followers. When a crazed shooter shot up Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford’s meeting in Tucson, Phelps announced that he would picket the funeral of a 9-year-old killed by the crazed shooter

because she was “better off dead.” The story made national news. To spare the little girl’s family the slings and arrows from Phelps ample quiver, he was given free air time on a radio in exchange for calling off the protest. Hate speech is protected speech. Why, one might ask, do we permit someone like Phelps and his followers to launch a verbal volley of hurtful, hateful, and obnoxious slogans at people in grief? In the United .States the regulation of free expression of ideas is different from the regulation of any other industry. What makes it different is the First Amendment to the Constitution; “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” The optimum response to Phelps is not to shut him up but rather to shout truth into his wax-filled ears, loud enough to be heard over the noise inside his own head. Were we to suppress his thoughts, they might drive
COMMENTARY I MP him mad and his wild antics might be viewed as grounded in delusions. Any first year law student could then plead him out on grounds of insanity. The idea of free speech that the First Amendment protects is designed to work as a safety value for the release of noxious ideas such as Phelps’. It lessens frustration and channels hate into means consistent with law. Phelps and his followers have not engaged in some of the illegal acts that marked some of the protests of the 1960’s.

But what about Mr. Snyder? The sort of conduct exhibited by Westboro would move some to a violent response. Having just this in mind, some states passed laws making it a crime to engage in behavior likely to arouse “anger and alarm” on the basis of race, color, gender, creed, or religion. The problem with such an enactment is it is not content neutral. It bans only certain kinds of speech, so that a youth prosecuted for burning a cross on the front lawn of a black family under the
ban was acquitted. The content of the speech in what determines whether it is protected speech. In ruling in Phelps favor, Justice Roberts said the distress occasioned by the protests here, turned on the content of Phelps’ message. Americans, grateful for the
ultimate sacrifice of fallen soldiers are wrenched by the slogan “Thank God for dead soldiers.” But Phelps can say it because it is a political message; it conveys the idea that Westboro is opposed to war. That makes it protected political speech. Were the protesters
instead waiving signs that read, “God Bless America” there would be no issue, because that is free speech we like and admire at the requiem for a fallen soldier. That means we would be censoring speech on the basis of its content.
The Patriot Guard Riders (PGR) is a motorcycle club whose members attend the funerals of members of the United States armed forces at the invitation of the deceased’s family. Patriot Guard Riders’ representatives state that they are not a chartered motorcycle club, but a group of patriotic individuals. The group was formed in 2005, to shelter and protect the funerals from protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church, who claim that the deaths of American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan are divine retribution for American tolerance of homosexuality. PGR members position themselves to physically shield the mourners from the presence of the Westboro protesters by blocking the protesters from view with their motorcade, or by having members hold American flags. The group also drowns out the protesters’
chants by singing patriotic songs or by revving motorcycle engines. Although initially founded by motorcyclists, the organization is open to anyone, regardless of political affiliation, veteran status, or whether they ride or not. The only prerequisite is “a deep respect for those who serve our country; military, firefighters, or law enforcement”. The Patriot Guard was established in Mulvane, Kansas at American Legion Post 136 in 2005. The group’s mission quickly expanded to include the funerals of law enforcement officers, fire department personnel, all first responders, and any active duty member or veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces from all previous wars and conflicts and is now largely focused on recognizing and
honoring the sacrifices of fallen servicemembers as well as their families and loved ones. As of August 2010, PGR reported over 201,000 members. In addition to their attendance at funerals, the group also greets troops returning from overseas at welcome home celebrations, deployment ceremonies, and perform volunteer work for veteran’s organizations such as Veterans Homes. The group also assists families in financial difficulties with travel and housing arrangements, and also visits military hospitals to encourage and honor wounded servicemembers of the United States Armed Forces.

The film project is currently seeking volunteers to be a part of the series. We are screening parents, spouses, and children of military service members to tell their stories about deployment. We would like to hear the stories and experiences from this population and their real life situations. The pilot will be made over the course of six months and will be targeted for Discovery Channel, KPBS, and OWN Network. The show targets the population of Military Families but

Baines , Headquarters Marine Corps The Marine Corps and the other branches of service face a growing enemy found on shelves in stores near military installations known as “Spice.” Fighting alongside their counterparts, the Marine Corps has taken a stance against Spice by prohibiting Marines from using the drug and possessing it altogether. Today the Drug Enforcement Ad-

ministration has dealt a devastating blow to the sale of Spice using its emergency scheduling authority under the Controlled Substances Act to regulate five of the chemicals commonly found in Spice as Schedule I controlled substances, which makes it illegal for at least one year. The composition of spice is a mixture of chemicals that are blended with herbs to mimic the effects of tetrahydrocannabinol, the active ingredient in marijuana. It is commonly sold as herbal potpourri at convenience stores, tobacco shops and novelty stores under a number of brand names. It is usually smoked in pipes and joints to achieve the hallucinogenic effect associated with marijuana. The easy-to-acquire drug had taken the armed forces by storm and the use of Spice by Marines has not gone unnoticed by top officials. DEA officials moved to ban Spice due to the alarming amount of calls received by poison control centers and emergency room visits regarding the negative effects of the drug, she added. This fake pot is untested in humans and long term effects are not entirely known, though a range of negative effects has been observed. “The side effects of Spice are also of concern, as it can cause anxiety, agitation, paranoia, slurred speech, impairment of coordination and memory and light headedness,” said Vice Adm. Adam Robinson, Surgeon General of the Navy. “In some cases, there have been reports of elevated blood pressure, increased heart rate, hallucinations and near death experiences.”

Tyson ready for Animal Planet debut in new series By Dave Skretta, AP Sports Writer JERSEY CITY, N.J. — It’s not hard to find Mike Tyson — it’s just difficult to get there. Start out at Madison Square Garden, the epicenter of boxing for years, and catch the first train to New Jersey. You’ll leave behind the glittering lights of New York City, slip quietly beneath the Hudson River and pass right by the quaint neighborhoods of Hoboken. When you get to Journal Square, start walking, across the Pulaski Skyway and past St. Peter’s Cemetery, the overturned gravestones a tired reminder that Jersey City has seen better days. At the intersection of Tonnele and Manhattan avenues, step inside the dimly lit Ringside Lounge, the aptly named hangout for fighters and their fans. Ask for Mario Costa, the owner of the joint, whose slicked-back hair and ever-present cigar give off a certain “Sopranos” vibe. He’ll take you around back and make the introductions. This is Tyson these days, a TV personality, movie star, international ambassador — even if he’s not sure what that entails. An entirely new generation knows nothing about the heavyweight era that he once dominated, or the prison sentences and tabloid tales. The only crime they connect to him is robbery — every scene he stole during the smash hit “The Hangover.” His new show on Animal Planet, titled “Taking on Tyson,” debuts Sunday night at 7 p.m. PST. The focus is on Tyson’s passion for pigeon racing, but it also brings viewers to places such as Jersey City and people such as Costa, who have stayed beside him through life’s turmoil. “People are going to see what they want to see — they make their own images and perceptions,” Tyson said during a break from filming last fall. “I can’t make anybody have an opinion about me. Only thing I can do is treat them the way they’d want to treat me.”

Campers should be alert for signs of fresh bear activity, and they should be able to tell the difference between Black Bear dung and Grizzy Bear dung. Black Bear dung is rather small and round. Sometimes you can see fruit seeds and/or squirrel fur in it. Grizzly Bear dung has bells in it, and smells like pepper spray!

This is one of the all-time great classic movies of its genre. Unlike most Hollywood movies that use historical events as backgrounds for sappy and insipid love stories, the main “character” of this movie is the event itself. For the Battle of Guadalcanal is one of the key battles in all of history. This momentous event, which took place at the same time the Soviet Union was battling the Germans at Stalingrad, marked the end of Japanese expansion in the south Pacific and the beginning of the process that would lead to Japan’s ultimate defeat. It should also be noted that the Battle for Guadalcanal was entirely an American operation, fought several thousands miles away from home and against an implacable enemy that had months, if not years, to prepare their defenses. Moreover, this battle took place just months after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The acting is great, the story compelling and is all-in-all a movie that is definitely worth watching.
Anthony Quinn Actor. Born Anthony Ruldolph Oaxaca Quinn on April 21, 1915, in Chihuahua, Mexico. Quinn and his family left Mexico for the United States shortly after his birth and eventually settled in Los Angeles, California. His father died when he was only nine years old. Quinn then quit school and worked odd jobs to help support his family. In 1936, Quinn made the leap into the acting profession. That year he had a role in the play Clean Beds with Mae West and appeared in the film Parole! This opened the door to other film roles, often playing the part of the bad guy. Quinn did some of his finest film work in the 1950s and 1960s. He played Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata in Viva Zapata (1952), a performance that won him the Academy Award for Actor in a Supporting Role. Quinn received that same honor again in 1956 for his portrayal of the painter Paul Gauguin in Lust for Life with Kirk Douglas. He was also nominated for Best Actor in 1957 for Wild Is the Wind and in 1964 for Zorba the Greek. Quinn achieved box-office success with starring roles in The Guns of Navarone (1961) with Gregory Peck and David Niven and Laurence of Arabia (1962) with Peter O’Toole. During the course of his career, Quinn appeared in more than 200 films. In his later years, he took on fewer acting roles and pursued his interest in art by painting, sculpting, and designing jewelry. Married three times, Quinn is said to have fathered 13 children.
Katherine DeMille Katherine Paula Lester Born June 29, 1911 Spouse – Anthony Quinn (1937-1965) Katherine DeMille (June 29, 1911 – April 27, 1995) was a Canadian-born American film actress. She was born Katherine Lester in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. She was orphaned as a child by the death of her father, an officer in the Canadian Army who died in World War I combat and loss of her mother to tuberculosis in 1920. When she was nine years old, she was found in an orphanage and legally adopted by film director Cecil B. DeMille and his wife Constance. She first appeared as an uncredited “Zeppelin Reveler” in Madame Satan (1930) and made thirty film appearances until she retired from films in 1956. DeMille married actor Anthony Quinn on October 3, 1937. they had five children : Christopher (born 1939), Christina (born December 1, 1941), Catalina (born November 21, 1942), Duncan (born August 4, 1945), and Valentina (born December 26, 1952) [1]. Their first child, Christopher, was found drowned in the lily pond of W.C. Fields at age two.[2] DeMille accepted the 1953 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor on behalf of her husband, who was not present at the ceremony. They divorced in 1965, following his affair with costume designer Jolanda Addolori. America's pastime starts with a crack of the bat and Cracker Jacks Spring training is almost as old as baseball itself. The best evidence points to spring training first taking place in 1870, when the Cincinnati Red Stockings and the Chicago White Stockings held organized baseball camps in New Orleans. Other baseball historians argue that the Washington Capitals of the National League pioneered spring training in 1888, holding a four-day camp in Jacksonville. The specific origins really don't matter. By 1900, spring training was firmly established as a baseball ritual, with most American and National League teams heading out of town so players could train and managers could evaluate. Small Florida and Arizona communities were suddenly known across the nation because of the allure provided by major-league baseball. St. Petersburg. Fort Lauderdale. Tucson. Sarasota. Bradenton. The San Diego Padres have trained in Arizona since their National League inception in 1969: from 1969 to 1993 the team trained in Yuma, while in 1994 the team moved to the new ballpark in Peoria.

The NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship is a single elimination tournament held each spring in the United States, featuring 68 college basketball teams, both conference champions and at-large selections. The tournament, organized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), was created in 1939 by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and was the brainchild of Kansas coach Phog Allen. Held mostly in March, it is informally known as March Madness or the Big Dance; the tournament, and especially the national semifinals and final (the Final Four), has become one of the nation's most prominent sporting events. The tournament bracket has included conference tournament champions from each Division I conference, which receive automatic bids. The remaining slots are at-large berths, with teams chosen by an NCAA selection committee. The selection process and tournament seedings are based on several factors, including team rankings, win-loss records and RPI data. The lowest-seeded teams compete in the "opening round games" to determine which will join the other 60 teams in the first round of the tournament. A Most Outstanding Player award is given by the
Associated Press at the end of each tournament. At 11 national titles, UCLA holds the record for the most NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championships; John
Wooden coached UCLA to 10 of its 11 titles. The University of Kentucky is second, with 7 national titles, while Indiana University and University of North Carolina are tied for third with 5 national titles, and current champion Duke University ranks fifth, with 4 national titles. The tournament is televised on CBS in the United States, except for the play-in game. On April 22, 2010, it was announced that the
NCAA had reached a new 14-year, $11 billion deal with CBS Sports and TimeWarner-owned Turner Sports for the rights to broadcast the NCAA Tournament from 2011-2024. Additionally, the tournament will be expanded to 68 teams starting in 2011. The NCAA men's basketball tournamentis colloquially known as "March Madness." Other staples of the tourney's unique lingo include "Sweet 16," "Final Four," and the "Big Dance." How and when did these terms originate? March Madness traces back to Illinois' statewide high-school basketball tournament, which began in 1908. In 1939, an official with the Illinois High School Association, Henry V. Porter, penned an article called "March Madness" for the organization's in-house magazine. "A little March madness may complement and contribute to sanity and help keep society on an even keel," he wrote. Three years later, he followed up with a poem, "Basketball Ides of March," which read in part: "A sharp-shooting mite is king tonight/ The Madness of March is running." The phrase was confined to Illinois high-school ball until 1982, when CBS broadcaster (and exChicago Daily News sportswriter) Brent Musburger used it during his network's NCAA tournament coverage.

To “let go” is not to deny, but to accept. To “let go” is not to regret the past, but to grow and live for the future. To “let go” is not to criticize and regulate anybody, but to try to become what I dream I can be. To “let go” is fear less and to love more. That understanding is what I saw come to these good men who have made some mistakes, but have the desire to be better people in spite of those mistakes. As I said earlier, I wish I saw more of the courage of these men in the brig, to work on self, in more of those whom I counsel day to day. However, I also feel we need to remember that there is one much wiser than you or me, who knows us and loves us unconditionally. He wants to be a part of our lives if we will let him in. He won’t force or compel us, but will be there when we invite him to be a part of it. It is hard for many of us to surrender to his help at times. We think we can do it all alone. But, that is when we tend to do the things that hurt those around us and ourselves. We don’t need to make it so hard. Life is a journey. We can make it one filled with nightmares or one filled with sweet dreams and great adventures. Another little story I came across expresses this point. It is called,

Guadalcanal-Tulagi Invasion, August 7 -9, 1942 The long fight for Guadalcanal formally opened shortly after 6 a.m. on August 7, 1942, when the heavy cruiser Quincy began bombarding Japanese positions near Lunga Point. In the darkness a few hours earlier, what was for mid-1942 an impressive invasion force had steamed past Savo Island to enter the sound between the two objective areas: Guadalcanal to the south and, less than twenty miles away, Tulagi to the north. These thirteen big transports (AP), six large cargo ships (AK) and four small high-speed transports (APD) carried some 19,000 U.S. Marines. They were directly protected by eight cruisers (three of them Australian), fifteen destroyers and five high-speed minesweepers (DMS). Led by Rear Admiral Richmond Kelly Turner, this armada was supported from out at sea by three aircraft carriers, accompanied by a battleship, six cruisers, sixteen destroyers and five oilers under the command of Vice Admiral Frank Jack Fletcher, who was also entrusted with the overall responsibility for the operation. The great majority of these ships (9 AP, 6 AK and most of the escort and bombardment ships), with Marine Major General Alexander A. Vandegrift and the bulk of his Leathernecks, was to assault Guadalcanal a few miles east of Lunga Point. Tactically, this part of the landing went very well. There were few enemy combat troops present, and these were some distance away. The first of the Marines came ashore soon after 9 a.m. at â&#x20AC;&#x153;Redâ&#x20AC;? Beach, a stretch of grey sand near

the Tenaru River. By the afternoon of the following day they had pushed westwards to seize the operation’s primary object, the nearly completed Japanese airfield near Lunga Point. The surviving Japanese, mainly consisting of labor troops, quickly retreated up the coast and inland, leaving the Marines with a bounty of captured materiel, much of which would soon prove very useful to its new owners. While the Marines consolidated their beachhead and began to establish a defensive perimeter around the airstrip, the landing of their supplies and equipment proceeded less well. Typically for these early amphibious operations, arrangements were inadequate to handle the glut of things brought ashore by landing craft. Mounds of supplies soon clogged the beaches, slowing the unloading of the ships offshore. A series of Japanese air attacks, which forced the ships to get underway to evade them, didn’t help, and when the catastrophic outcome to the Battle of Savo Island and the withdrawal of Vice Admiral Fletcher’s carriers forced the the big transports and cargo ships to
leave on 9 August, none of them had been completely unloaded. Though the Marines had taken their objective, supply shortages would plague them in the coming weeks, as the Japanese hit back by air, sea and land in an increasingly furious effort to recover Guadalcanal’s strategically important airfield.
When mild-looking Victor Krulak was graduated from the Naval Academy in 1934 he was the smallest man in his class. He had a long Milquetoast nose, soft reddish hair, one constantly surprised eyebrow, and a solid reputation for whimsical understatement. Inevitably, he was called “The Brute.” As a lieutenant colonel of the Marines, back from a brush with the Japs on Choiseul Island, The Brute was in line for a Navy Cross. His Marine paratroopers had harried and jabbed the Jap for a week, killed at least 144, wounded uncounted others. The Marines landed on Choiseul at night, 18 hours after the Treasury Islands attack began. There were about 2,000 of them, and their heaviest weapons were 60-mm. mortars, but their job was to make a noise like a couple of divisions, to divert attention from the Bougainville landings. They succeeded: the Jap radio reported 20,000 Allied troops on Choiseul. Down on the Jap garrison at Sangagai swooped two Marine detachments. One party, moving along the beach, struck the Japs just at mealtime (2 p.m.—the Japs did not observe daylight saving.) Said The Brute: “The Nips immediately scampered into the mountains and met head on with our [other] force coming down. They put up a very nice fight but made the mistake of trying one of those banzai charges . . . our machine guns just chopped them to pieces. One of our men lost the tripod of his machine gun. He picked it up like one of those Victor McLaglen movies and fired.” The day of Bougainville, Krulak’s raiders slipped up the coast and attacked the supply and fueling area. “All burned briskly,” reported Krulak happily. The Brute thought the Jap marines better fighters than the soldiers encountered in the fueling area. But all of them, said he, are “really very easy to kill . . . they have a bit of a fetish about charging that gets them into trouble. A man who goes directly into machine-gun fire generally loses his social security.” To the long legends of the Marines, The Brute added another: When the Japs pushed out vigorous counter patrols, the Marines chose the trees that would be most tempting to Jap snipers. In the bark, the Marines stuck razor blades. As anticipated, the moment the Japs hit, the sniper squads started up the trees. Then they began dropping “in most outraged surprise.” While still staring at their hands, they were picked off.

(Comedy, R, 114 minutes). Topher Grace and Anna Faris play twins who are maybe 10 years out of high school and end up at the most boring and endless party scene in recent cinema, as part of a lame comedy in which he lusts after Teresa Palmer and she would rather attend Oxford than marry Chris Pratt, who has never heard of it. In the climax, Grace rolls downhill inside a large out-of-control metal ball, perhaps hoping to qualify for a Darwin Award. Rating: One and a half stars.

(Animated comedy, PG, 107 minutes). An animated comedy for smart moviegoers, wonderfully made, great to look at, wickedly satirical and (gasp!) filmed in glorious 2D. Johnny Depp plays a humble reptile saddled with the responsibility of bringing civilization to Dirt, an untamed Western town. He battles eagles, vultures and rattlesnakes in a high-energy comedy that’s fun for kids and maybe more fun for grown-ups. The clarity and imagination of the animation is wonderful. Directed by Gore Verbinski, who made all three of Depp’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” films. Rating: Four stars.

n the co-main event of Showtime’s feature presentation of Strikeforce, Liz Carmouche, a petite, 27-yearold, former Marine, now local MMA instructor at the San Diego Combat Academy, appeared well on her way to defeating Marloes Coenen, the 29-year-old world champion from Amsterdam, Netherlands, until getting caught in a triangle choke which forced her to tap out at 1:29 in the fourth round. Until that surprising move, Carmouche, now 6-1-0, 4 KOs, who took the fight on less than two weeks’ notice, was well ahead on the score cards. After an even first round, Coenen (19-4-3, with 14 submissions) spent the bulk of the second and third rounds looking almost helpless on the ground while getting pummeled. What was really surprising was how Coenen could take such punishment. Then in the fourth round she got her legs up to find their way around the neck and arm of Carmouche. She managed the winning maneuver after Carmouche drove forward for a takedown. When they hit the mat, Carmouche’s arm became trapped between Coenen’s legs, allowing the champion to encircle the challenger’s neck. Despite the lack of time to prepare, Carmouche outfought Coenen by taking her down three times, mounting her twice and having dominant position four times. She did most of her damage while mounted on top of the champion and outstriking her 91-9 in the second round and 88-14 in the third. Born in Okinawa, Japan, Carmouche is of Lebanese descent. The Camp Pendleton Marine spent five years in the Marine Corps with the three tours in Iraq. She now trains at the San Diego Combat Academy where she’s gotten expert help from coaches Manolo Hernandez and Baret Yoshida for MMA and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Priest “Tiger” Smalls for boxing.
