hy can we not get a candidate that can tell the truth and nothing but the truth? I think that if you tell the truth and if it offends the people, so be it! If you offend anyone with the truth then the problem becomes the offended and not the of-

fender. I think if I were a man of greater wealth, I could beat either candidates — Obama or Mitt Romney — merely by telling the truth about our economy, our future, our society and the American dream. What I’m about to say will be offensive to many

of the people that read this article, but I really don’t give a damn, for the truth needs to be told! I would never pander to any party, union, nationality, or black, white, brown, straight, or gay

‘total reprobate’ “You can’t run from your mistakes. You have to confront them.”

— Arnold Schwarzenegger

By Cal Thomas Believe it or not, there was a time when people didn’t go on TV to confess their sins. That was back when most understood what sin is, before everything became excusable, especially for celebrities and the politically powerful. Former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is on a media

tour promoting his book, “Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story.” It certainly is. On “60 Minutes,” in USA Today and elsewhere, Schwarzenegger acknowledges affairs with women not his wife and the son he fathered with their housekeeper. He calls it all a “mistake.” No, a mistake is something far less

consequential. Claiming you’ve been to “all 57 states,” as President Obama said during the 2008 campaign, is a mistake. Does “mistake” best describe Arnold’s behavior? For certain readers, definitions may help. Dictionary.com defines a “mistake” as “an error in action, calculation, opinion, or judgment caused by poor reasoning, carelessness, insuf-

ficient knowledge, etc.” Let’s pick another word -- “fornication” -- and consider its definition: “voluntary sexual intercourse between two unmarried persons or two persons not married to each other.” It’s an old-fashioned word that has fallen out of favor, but doesn’t it describe Schwarzenegger’s behavior better than “mistake”? If you prefer a definition with some moral force, it is “sexual immorality in general, especially adultery.” Perhaps the saddest moment in the “60 Minutes” interview with Lesley Stahl is a video of Schwarzenegger’s wife, Maria Shriver, defending him when he was accused of groping several women. Shriver basically testifies to her husband’s character when she says she has spent more time with him than the few moments his accusers claim they spent, implying she knows he doesn’t do stuff like this. Given Schwarzenegger’s piggish behavior, Shriver’s role as a character witness for a man who clearly has none is painful to watch. One of the criticisms of the Republican Schwarzenegger when he became governor was that he quickly moved to the left from his mostly conservative-sounding campaign themes. He blamed the Democratic majority in the California State Assembly. So much for sticking to political principles. Schwarzenegger’s interviews reveal a man without a moral center. He didn’t admit to fathering his housekeeper’s son until after he left office, reportedly during a session with a marriage counselor. Lesley Stahl asked him why he didn’t tell Maria about the affair. “I didn’t know how,” he said. Sure he did. It’s something like Lauren Bacall telling Humphrey Bogart how to whistle in “To Have and Have Not.” He simply had to open his mouth and tell her. Was it political expediency that kept him quiet? What other explanation could there be? Does he care nothing about his children and the message he has sent them? Apparently not, or he would have behaved more responsibly. Next up is Monica Lewinsky. She reportedly is writing a book about her liaisons with Bill Clinton. “Affair” doesn’t seem the right word for assig-

Commentary nations so transitory, does it? What additional detail does the public need to have? Those we were given were sleazy enough to prompt mothers of young children to shield them from news coverage for months on end. Lewinsky’s writing the book for the money. Apparently, the handbags she designed failed to catch on. Richard Nixon couldn’t get away with “mistakes were made” when his press secretary, Ron Ziegler, tried explaining the Watergate affair. But Arnold Schwarzenegger thinks he can get away with this. In today’s “anything goes” climate, maybe he’s right. The cultural condemnation for this behavior long ago went into retreat. Still, if you want to support fidelity

while showing disapproval for Schwarzenegger’s behavior, don’t buy his book, or Monica’s. Schwarzenegger’s book might have been more accurately titled, “Total Reprobate.” Reprobate: “A depraved, unprincipled, or wicked person.”

voters that only want to continue receiving benefits such as welfare and unemployment. I am opposed when they feel it is an entitlement rather than an opportunity to help themselves out of what should be a temporary situation. Welfare was designed to help people for a short period of time so that they may regain the opportunity to get back on their feet and rejoin the workforce. But for some reason welfare has contributed to the majority of recipients using it as a way of life and not a helping hand. Welfare should never be considered a handout but a hand-up. If we look at history and we are honest, we realize that people on welfare will continue to consider welfare an entitlement. Those same people will future generations with the same inbred ideas about the system. I would change the welfare system and make every man and woman become a productive contributing American. We can give them jobs even if they don’t’ like them along with the opportunity to go to school and better their stations in life. For those of you that disagree, I must use the words of Jack Nicholson in the movie A Few Good Men: “YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH.”

FOR THE 1% OF THOSE WEALTHY AMERICANS You must contribute more money in the form of taxes so that you are paying your fair share. Your hard work and gamble paid off but that does not entitle you to become profitable beyond most people’s greatest dreams

You must remember what happened during the French Revolution and in so many other countries where the populace became fed up and disillusioned with their government and the protection and bribes paid for by the powerful and wealthy! Eventually you will lose everything that your GREED has gained you. You will be a revolution and you will become the Hunted not the Hunters! Sure, I know exactly what you’re thinking… that this is the writing of a crazy alarmist but believe me my writings will come about sooner than you think. Again, as Jack Nicholson, said, “YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH.”

Lest ye forget: “Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” The point I’m trying to get across to you is when the middle class is can no longer sustain the ability to carry the TAX load that the 1% have not contributed their fair share to, the GREED will not go unpunished! Every successful president must surround himself with people of greater intelligence about all the different affairs

of our nation. That means you have to surround yourself and select people of tremendous knowledge about the position they will fill. To give you some examples... If I were to hire a man that had knowledge about the theory of relativity, my man would have been Albert Einstein. Now that he’s no longer with us I would hire one of his protégés. If I were to hire a man to be an

ambassador to any foreign country, he would not be a friend but rather a knowledgeable person that had the experience in dealing with that country. If I were to appoint a commanderin-chief of our military I would select an officer held in great esteem by all his colleagues. If I were hire a man to get us out of the “recession/depression” that our country is in, it would be Franklin Delano Roosevelt and those people that he hired to restore our country and put our people back to work. I think you get my meaning. It does not take a nuclear scientist to figure out what people I’d put into position to improve every aspect of our economy and the success of our nation. Under no circumstances should we increase the size of government. We should eliminate all departments that are redundant or created for the sake of increasing the size of our government. I have seen first hand the waste in our government and will attack these issues at another time. This being Richard Matz, said you must Publisher make the choice and decide whether I am a fool or maybe “I CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH.”

From Our Readers

A REMINDER IN HISTORY “If the enemy is in the wire, and you have one bullet left — shoot the press.”

General VoNguyen Giap— North Vietnames General

G

eneral Giap was a brilliant, highly respected leader of the North Vietnam military. The following quote is from his memoirs currently found in the Vietnam war memorial in Hanoi: ‘What we still don’t understand is why you Americans stopped the bombing of Hanoi. You had us on the ropes. If you had pressed us a little harder, just for another day or two, we were ready to surrender! It was the same at the battle of TET. You defeated us! We knew it, and we thought you knew it. But we were elated to notice your media was helping us. They were causing more disruption in America than we could in the battlefields. We were ready to surrender. You had won!’ General Giap has published his memoirs and confirmed what most Americans knew. The Vietnam war was not lost in Vietnam it was lost at home.. The same slippery slope, sponsored by the U.S. media, is currently underway. It exposes the enormous power of a biased media to cut out the heart and will of the American public.

*Snoops.com, a fact finding site claims the above info not to be completely true – The publisher of the MP witnessed this period of history and will print snopes claims and add rebuttal in our next issue.––––

If you lived through the time of ’Nam, you will recognize the truth of this thought: Do not fear the enemy, for they can take only your life. Fear the media, for they will distort your grasp of reality and destroy your honor. Be afraid as it is happening again.

True Crime – Halloween continued from page 3>>>

The Candy Man - A True Halloween Horror Story

On Halloween night in 1974, a father in Pasadena, Texas, by the name of Ronald Clark O’Bryan poisoned four jumbo-sized Pixy Stix with cyanide. He had taken out a sizeable life insurance policy on his children and passed out the cyanide-laden candy not only to his son and daughter, but to four other children to cover up his crime. Only his 8-year-old son, Timothy Marc O’Brien, ingested the candy and died soon after. Ronald Clark O’Bryan was put to death for his crime on March 31st, 1984. It is believed that this incident is what prompted the “candy scare” of the 80s and 90s.

The Hanging “Decoration”

In October of 2005, the body of a 42-year-old woman was discovered hanging from a tree in Frederica, Delaware. Neighbors believed the post-suicidal woman was a Halloween decoration and did not contact the authorities until the body had been hanging there for three hours.

Accidental Death Sentence

In October of 1990, 15-year-old

North Carolina resident, William Anthony Odem, accidentally hung himself while staging a dramatic gallows scene at a Halloween party.

The Napa Valley Murders- A True Halloween Horror Story

This took place in Napa Valley, California. On Halloween night 2004, housemates Lauren M., Adriane Insogna and Leslie Ann Mazzara handed out candy to trick-or-treaters and went to bed around 10:30 a.m. Lauren awoke to the sound of breaking glass at 2:00am followed by screaming from Adriane. She ran out of the house and hid in the backyard. Upon hearing Adriane scream again, Lauren came back inside and tried to dial 911 but the phone didn’t work. Upstairs, she found both her friends had been stabbed and were barely clinging to life. Realizing she could not help them, she left the house again and called 911 from her cell phone. Both women soon died. The killer turned out to be Eric Copple, Adriane’s best friend’s fiancé, who apparently committed the murders out of jealousy of the friendship between Adriane and his wife-to-be.

Red Bull Helicopter will be at the Miramar Air Show About Chuck, and Red Bull Heli “Malibu” Chuck Aaron is the first - and only - civilian pilot ever to be licensed to perform helicopter aerobatics in the United States. In fact, he’s one of only three pilots permitted to execute the dangerous maneuvers internationally. Chuck is also the first helicopter pilot to be presented with the Art Scholl Showmanship Award, an honor bestowed by the International Council of Air Shows to recognize the world’s most outstanding air show performers, and was inducted in 2011 to the prestigious Society of Experimental Test Pilots. But the blond, mustachioed pilot isn’t one to brag - or to rest on his laurels. Chuck takes to the road much of the year, piloting the one-of-a-kind Red Bull Helicopter through breathtaking air show choreography including backflips, 360-degree rolls, and a heartstopping tumble called the Chuckcilvak. “People can’t believe what they’re seeing, Chuck laughs. “How can a helicopter do all those crazy things?” Born in San Antonio, Chuck first flew a helicopter at age 20 and built a career through hard work, moving up from crop duster and traffic reporter to film and television stunt pilot. He helped the U.S. Department of Defense develop and test night-vision systems, and he even rebuilt three Cobras from leftover military parts. In 2004, he joined forces with Red Bull to take on a daunting challenge: figuring out how to perform aerobatics in a helicopter. After devoting nearly two years with the Flying Bulls team to modify and test a MesserschmittBölkow Blohm BO-105, devise maneuvers, and determine how to make the aircraft perform them, in 2006 Chuck guided the Red Bull Helicopter through its U.S. debut. Today, Chuck has logged more than 20,000 hours in the air and performed aerobatics with the Red Bull Helicopter at more than 150 air shows and

events from coast to coast. “I love doing things nobody has ever done,” he declares, “as well as the opportunities the Red Bull Helicopter offers me.”

Blue Angels History

At the end of World War II, Chester W. Nimitz, then the Chief of Naval Operations, ordered the formation of a flight demonstration team to keep the public interested in naval aviation. The Blue Angels performed their first flight demonstration less than a year later in June 1946 at their home base, Naval Air Station (NAS) Jacksonville, Florida. Flying the Grumman F6F Hellcat, they were led by Lt. Cmdr. Roy “Butch” Voris. Only two months later on August 25, 1946, the Blue Angels transitioned to the Grumman F8F Bearcat. One year later, the 1947 team, led by Lt. Cmdr. Robert Clarke, introduced the now famous “Diamond Formation.” By the end of the 1940’s the Blue Angels were flying their first jet aircraft, the Grumman F9F-2 Panther. In response to the demands placed on naval aviation in the Korean Conflict, the team reported to the aircraft carrier USS Princeton as the nucleus of Fighter Squadron 191 (VF-191), Satan’s Kittens, in 1950.

The team reorganized the next year and reported to NAS Corpus Christi, Texas, where they began flying the newer and faster version of the Panther, the F9F-5. The Blue Angels remained in Corpus Christi until the winter of 1954 when they relocated to their present home base at NAS Pensacola, Florida. It was here that they progressed to the swept-wing Grum-

man F9F-8 Cougar. The ensuing 20 years saw the Blue Angels transition to two more aircraft, the Grumman F11F-1 Tiger (1957) and the McDonnell Douglas F-4J Phantom II (1969). In December 1974, the Navy Flight Demonstration Team began flying the McDonnell Douglas A-4F Skyhawk II and was reorganized as the Navy

Flight Demonstration Squadron. This reorganization permitted the establishment of a commanding officer vice a flight leader (Cmdr. Tony Less was the squadron’s first official commanding officer), added support officers and further redefined the squadron’s mission, emphasizing the support of recruiting efforts. On November 8, 1986, the Blue Angels completed their 40th anniversary year during ceremonies unveiling their present aircraft, the new sleek F/A-18 Hornet, the first dual-role fighter/attack aircraft now serving on the nation’s front lines of defense. In 1992 more than one million people viewed Blue Angels’ performances during a 30-day European deployment to Sweden, Finland, Russia, Romania, Bulgaria, Italy, the United Kingdom and Spain. This was the first European deployment in 19 years. The 2008 show season brought out more than 13 million spectators. Since 1946, the Blue Angels have performed for more than 455 million fans.

The Navy’s Flight Demonstration Squadron The Blue Angels’ mission is to enhance Navy and Marine Corps recruiting efforts and to represent the naval service to the United States, its elected leadership and foreign nations. The Blue Angels serve as positive role models and goodwill ambassadors for the U. S. Navy and Marine Corps. A Blue Angels flight demonstration exhibits choreographed refinements of skills possessed by all naval aviators. It includes the graceful aerobatic maneuvers of the four-jet Diamond Formation, in concert with the fast-paced, high-performance maneuvers of its two Solo pilots. Finally, the team illustrates the pinnacle of precision flying, performing maneuvers locked as a unit in the renowned, six-jet Delta Formation. The team is stationed at Forrest Sherman Field, Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida, during the show season. However, the squadron spends January through March training pilots and new team members at Naval Air Facility El Centro, California. The Blue Angels are scheduled to fly 68 air shows at 35 air show sites in the United States during the 2009 season, as the team celebrates our 22nd year of flying the F/A-18 Hornet. Last season, more than 13 million spectators watched the Blue Angels perform. Since its inception in 1946, the Blue Angels have performed for more than 455 million fans. 12 October 15, 2012 THE MILITARY PRESS

October 15, 52012 THE MILITARY PRESS 13

By Douglas Aguillard It all started on May 22, 1912, when Lt. Alfred A. Cunningham reported for flight training at the Naval Academy at Annaplois, it wasn’t until August 20, at Marblehead, Massachusetts, that Cunningham soloed in a Curtiss B-1 Seaplane and became Naval Aviator number 5. Since then, Marine pilots have done their job to defend America and each other, with names like Col. Gregory “Pappy” Boyington (Medal of Honor awardee) of the Flying Tigers in China, and the infamous VMF-214 “Black Sheep” squadron of WWII, and Lt. Col John Bolt, the only Marine aviator to achieve the title of “Ace” in both WWII and the Korean War; and remains to this day the only Marine “Jet Pilot” ace. Because of these men and many more, 2012 brings us the 100 year Anniversary of United States Marine Corps Aviation, and no place is that history better represented, than at the little known Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum, based at MCAS Miramar, in San Diego, CA. This museum is probably the best kept secret in the aviation world, which is not something this museum wants. Every branch of the U.S, Armed Forces is allowed only one official museum, and is funded by Congress. The Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum has undergone a rigorous certification process and is one of only three certified Marine Corps Command Museums. The museum is the only museum in the world dedicated to the primary purpose of preserving the history of U.S. Marine Corps aviation The museum was originally founded and based at MCAS El Toro, in Orange County, CA but with base closures in the 1990’s El Toro was shut

down and NAS Miramar, became MCAS Miramar, after the U.S. Navy’s move to Fallon, Nevada (including it’s famous “Top Gun” school). Along with the Marines came the Command Museum in 1999, opening in the year 2000 to the general public. Steve “Smitty” Smith (USMC Ret.) is currently the Curator of the Museum. He started working at the museum, back when it was located at MCAS El Toro, where Smitty was stationed and he decided to volunteer at the museum. He worked as the museum’s librarian, and then he became the Assistant Curator. After the museum moved to MCAS Miramar, Smitty was promoted to his current position. Along with Asst. Curator Leon Simon (served in the US Navy), both men are responsible for all of the aircraft maintenance, and restoration, along with over 100 volunteers who either work in the museum as docents, or work in various positions from the gift shop, office, to restoring the planes that are acquired from the military. Most volunteers are former and retired Military. Former US Senator and Retired Marine Colonel John Glenn is the Chairman of the Board of the Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum Foundation that runs the museum. The museum currently has approx. 40 planes and vehicles that are either displayed outside of the museum, or in

its restoration hanger nearby. Most planes date from the WWII era to the Present day, and the helicopters from the Korean War to the present. Inside the current building, housing the museum are rooms full of Marine Corps aviation history with paintings, pictures, documents, and other displays showing that the Marine Corps’ proud history and tradition isn’t only held by the Marines hitting the beaches and fighting on the ground for over 236 years. The current plans are for a new two story 90,000 square foot building to be built as soon as the Marines make a final decision on the museum. They have already decided where the new building will be built and funding does not seem to be an issue, it’s strictly some red tape that is slowing down the process of getting the final okay’s done. The new building will house a library, a small theater, a gift shop, and more rooms for the many displays. Modern technology will be made available to watch videos and other films. There will be more room for more planes as “Smitty” is constantly attempting to add more to the museum’s inventory. The museum, while located on MCAS Miramar, it has its own entrance, and is located directly across the street from 8604 Miramar Road. From I-15, proceed west for 1.3 miles and turn left into the parking lot. From I-805, proceed east for 3.9 miles and turn right into the parking lot. Look for the American flag and Marine Corps flag on the fence, and the museum is open from Tuesday through Sunday (except on Federal holidays) from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. For more info, visit www.flyingleathernecks.org

Gone But Not Forgotten

MOVIE REVIEW

“Hotel Transylvania”

Boris Karloff

“To die, to be really dead, that must be glorious.” Lugosi was a horror god. He had the ability to scare the bejesus out of everyone, including unsuspecting trick-ortreaters. Unfortunately, he hit the skids in a big way, when he moved into this little flat on Harold Way, in Hollywood. This is where he lived through his infamous Ed Wood period. His death in this simple home on August 16, 1956, led Lugosi to the pine condo for the very last time (he spent most of his career there). He was 73 years old. Years of morphine, Demerol and other drug use, due to a war injury, had Peter Lorre taken their toll. His body was removed, and Lugosi was laid out at the now razed Utter-McKinley Mortuary, at 6240 Hollywood Boulevard. I grabbed a hunk of it before they tore it down. Hundreds of fans lined Hollywood Boulevard to view his body, laid out in his Dracula cape. Legend has it that Peter Lorre and Boris Karloff were viewing the body of their old friend, who had risen out of so many coffins as Count Dracula, Lorre said, “Come now, Bela, quit putting us on!” Bela’s casket was taken by hearse to the cemetery.

• Daily Early Bird Special:

By Jeri Jacquin / Movie Maven Open now in theaters from director Genndy Tartakovsky and Sony Pictures Animation is a Halloween treat for everyone who wants to vacation at “Hotel Transylvania.” This film tells the story of Dracula (voiced by Adam Sandler), heartbroken over the loss of his wife, he decides to do whatever it takes to protect daughter Mavis (Selena Gomez). He decides to create Hotel Transylvania, a place were monsters can go to get away from, well, humans! As Mavis’ 118th birthday approaches, Dracula plans a huge party to celebrate. The guests begin to arrive that include Frankenstein (Kevin James) and wife Eunice (Fran Drescher), Wayne Wolf (Steve Buscemi) and wife Wanda (Molly Shannon) along with their cubs and Murray the Mummy (CeeLo Green). But as with any party there’s always one uninvited guest! Backpacker Jonathan (Andy Samberg) wanders into the hotel only to discover this isn’t exactly the destination he had in mind. Final Word: Sandler as Dracula brought fun into a fatherly role that would be unexpected from a guy with fangs. Instead we get to see a loving dad and a good friend with an all around warm heart – even for humans! It is also easy to hear Sandler having a good time, which comes across on screen. Gomez as Mavis is the typical teenager who wants to see the world, granted most have before their 118th birthday! Gomez gives her character flair and fun with the added benefit of being very cute as a bat. Samberg as Jonathan is a laid-back world traveler who, once over the shock, isn’t at all disturbed by his hotel hosts. Instead he adds fun and, dare I say, light to a dark place. Tubs of Popcorn: I give “Hotel Transylvania” four tubs of popcorn out of five. This really is a fun film that not only has the animation that the kids will love and a story that is relatable for families but humor that mom and dad are going to enjoy. The animation is wonderful that is so vibrant and fun. The action has a thrill element to it that just adds to the film entirely. The 3D isn’t really necessary to enjoy the film! Sony Pictures Animation has once again provided family entertainment and takes the word “family” to heart. In the end – this is where monsters go to get away from it all!

Halloween

MASTERS OF THe MACABRE As a young kid I was obsessed with horror movies and eagerly awaited Friday nights when my parents would go to the pub and leave me alone to watch the Friday late-night horror double bill. I’d place crucifixes at each door and keep my pellet pistol loaded. I also subscribed to horror magazines such as ‘Monsters of Filmland’ and ‘Famous Monsters’ and devoured every page, my parents thought I was mad as a hatter (nothing has changed). So here are just a few of my favorite horror actors. Tell me who I’ve missed. trevor@militarypress.com

And of course, my favorite – Ingrid Pitt Horror Star Who Survived Nazis Vincent Price

Boris Karloff

Maila Nurmi

Christopher Lee

Elsa Lanchester

Lon Chaney

Barbara Steele

Linda Blair

Lovely and voluptuous, the actress Ingrid Pitt was given a choice early in her film career: pornography or horror. Ms. Pitt, who had spent her childhood in a Nazi concentration camp, later scoured Europe in search of her vanished father and still later was forced to flee East Germany a step ahead of the police, chose horror. It was a genre she knew firsthand. Known for her tousled hair, pneumatic figure and sporadically sharp incisors, Hammer billed her as “the most beautiful ghoul in the world.”

Sports

The Dynamic Trio:

Kobe: Howard & Nash continued from page 3>>>

Yet, Bryant now looks around at his current teammates – a star-filled group that includes Gasol, Dwight Howard and Steve Nash – and calls

this season’s Lakers his most talented supporting cast ever. “On its face, it’s the best talent I’ve been around,” Bryant said. “Whether that translates into winning a championship remains to be seen. But just on paper you’re talking Defensive Player of the Years, MVPs, All-Stars. You’re talking about a myriad of things. Guys who are at the top of their position at one point or another. It’s pretty dope.” One thing is for certain: After acquiring Howard and Nash in the offseason, these Lakers won’t lack for attention. More than 300 media members attended the opening of the Lakers’ camp, overwhelming the air

conditioning at the team’s practice facility. Excited Lakers fans peered over a fence in the morning prior to the start of media day hoping to get a glimpse of anyone in gold and purple. “For me, my expectations are to prepare to play, to improve, perform and build a team,” Nash said. “When you’re concentrating on that, you don’t focus on what other people’s expectations are. You set your own standard. You set your own expectations. You try to live up to those every day.” [Also: LeBron James has to explain why he didn’t cry after NBA Finals win] Howard’s only NBA Finals trip was a loss to the Lakers in 2009, and his recovery from back surgery could determine with L.A. is able to make a title run with him. Lakers coach Mike Brown said Howard is in great shape and has been playing one-on-one with assistant coaches Darvin Ham and Chuck Person. Brown, however, was uncertain as to when Howard would be cleared to scrimmage. The Lakers begin practice Tuesday with Howard expected to participate in a fashion dictated by how his body feels, Brown said. “I want him to take his time. But at the same time, I’m not a doctor. It’s up to the training staff,” Brown said. Gasol said he will start at center in Howard’s absence while Jordan Hill is expected to start at power forward. Antawn Jamison will likely come off

the bench. Howard, however, didn’t rule out playing opening night. “It’s a goal, but I’m not rushing it,” Howard said. “Everybody wants me to play on opening night. But we are not going to rush it.” Another big question hanging over Howard: Can he play well with Bryant? Bryant and Howard say they are on the same page and will do what is needed to succeed. Bryant is still the Lakers’ top option offensively, but Howard will certainly want his touches in the post.

Can Anyone Catch Arian Foster and the Texans? Well, we know that the Jets can’t.

There can be no debate. It wasn’t quite a Romney over Obama trouncing but in beating the Jets to go to 5-0 for the first time in their brief history, the Texans and their playmakers showed a prime time audience the kind of balance that has given them an unbeaten record without too much sweat. They continue as the top-ranked team in the Daily News’ Power Rankings, ahead of another team that’s 5-0 for the first time, the Falcons. The Jets, while putting up a fight, fell one spot to 23rd. The Giants, in roaring back from a 14-0 deficit against the bottom-ranked Browns, climbed one spot into eighth. 1. (1) Texans (5-0): When O falters, D takes over. 2. (2) Falcons (5-0): First 5-0 start in franchise history. 3. (4) 49ers (4-1): Alex Smith-led offense piles up 621 yards, more than any Joe Montana offense. 4. (5) Ravens (3-1): Very ugly win in KC. 5. (7) Patriots (3-2): Fast-paced offense has that wow factor. 6. (3) Cardinals (4-1): Weakish offense got exposed in first loss. 7. (6) Eagles (3-2): Vick fumbles prove costly. 8. (9) Giants (3-2): Brownies are their last cupcake. 9. (10) Bears (4-1): Bye week precedes an easy stretch of schedule. 10. (14) Vikings (4-1): Defense has allowed just three TDs in last three games. 11. (15) Seahawks (3-2): Defense hasn’t allowed a TD in over two games. 12. (11) Broncos (2-3): Run defense a huge problem. 13. (8) Packers (2-3): They can’t stop teams when it counts, even the Colts. 14. (13) Chargers (3-2): They’re blaming Norv. Must be force of habit. 15. (17) Steelers (2-2): Ship gets righted ... for now. 16. (12) Bengals (3-2): Marvin Lewis goes brain-dead. 17. (20) Rams (3-2): Nine sacks, 18 pressures on Kolb. 18. (16) Cowboys (2-2): Tough one against Ravens next. 19. (18) Redskins (2-3): With RG3 still in there, they probably win the game. 20. (19) Lions (1-3): Bye week came at right time. 21. (24) Dolphins (2-3): Looks like they finally have their quarterback. 22. (21) Jets (2-3): At least they made a game of it. 23. (22) Bucs (1-3): Three straight losses to NFC East foes by combined 15 points. 24. (23) Bills (2-3): Chan Gailey: “I have no answer. I have no excuse.” Soon he may have no job. 25. (25) Raiders (1-3): Making run game more consistent is top priority. 26. (29) Colts (2-2): What a drive by Andrew Luck. 27. (27) Panthers (1-4): Cam Newton going through sophomore jinx. 28. (31) Saints (1-4): Unbeaten with Sean Payton in the house. 29. (26) Titans (1-4): Have the look of a team in mid-quit. 30. (30) Chiefs (1-4): “Fire Pioli” planes were flying before game. 31. (28) Jaguars (1-4): Two pick sixes for Gabbert. 32. (32) Browns (0-5): That could have been their last 14-point lead of the season.

Military News By Rick Rogers Host of Front & Center: Military Talk Radio It’s no secret that for-profit schools have long caught the attention of Congress and the White House for all the wrong reasons. High loan default rates, non-transferable credits, low job placement and high tuition are just a few of the reasons why. This all of course greatly matters in San Diego because for-profits are routinely accused of taking advantage of young military veterans for their Post 9/11 GI Bill and this after all is home to largest Iraq and Afghanistan vet population in the country. Not that all for-profits are shady, but the lengths that some have gone to to make a buck are clearly over the line. A 2009 Bloomberg story exposed a particularly egregious case of a Bridgepoint Education, Inc. recruiter signing up a brain injured Marine at Camp Lejeune for classes. Yes, the same Bridgepoint Education Inc. that this summer watched one of its cash cows -- Ashford University – get slaughtered when the Western Association of Schools and Colleges yanked its accreditation. Not that no one saw that coming. In April President Obama signed an executive order aimed at limiting deceptive and misleading practices

by for-profit schools recruiting troops, vets and their families. The executive order required schools getting GI Bill dollars to disclose information such as the percentage of veterans actually earning degrees. In March 2011, Sen. Tom Harkin chaired a Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee hearing that examined Bridgepoint. According to Harkin, 63 percent of students enrolling at Ashford University, in the 2008-2009 school year withdrew before completing their course work. The good news here is that the University of San Diego has started a Veterans Legal Clinic to represent former service members in legal matters, including those who believe they were taken advantage of by for-profit schools. The importance of this legal program cannot be overstated. Finally veterans will stand a fighting chance against the well-heeled attorneys that for-profits can afford. Former Camp Pendleton Marine Robert Muth is the supervising attorney for the vet legal clinic. To listen to my interview with Muth, go to: http:// goo.gl/UstqQ. Another local Marine with ties to the program is Patrick Uetz, a retired Camp Pendleton staff judge advocate who now heads the effort to protect students veterans. Muth said clinic services would fo-

cus on three areas. • Outreach events to educate veterans. • Reviewing individual educational enrollment agreements so that vets know what they are getting into. Some of these documents can be 40 pages long. • Litigation and arbitration. If money can be raised, Muth said he’d like to see legal services expanded to tackle the upgrading of discharg-

es and other issues. For more on the Veterans Legal Clinic, go to: http://goo.gl/j8hVP or call (619) 260-7470. Rick Rogers has covered defense and veterans issues for nearly 30 years. He hosts Front & Center: Military Talk Radio Sundays, 11 to noon, Pacific Time, on KCBQ AM 1170 (www.kcbq.com). Podcasts at www.DefenseTracker.com. Boris Karloff was an English-born actor whose name became synonymous with horror movies. When Bela Lugosi refused to take the part, the role of the Monster in 1931’s Frankenstein went to Boris Karloff. His performance received huge praise and he became an overnight sensation. OFF PARTS & ACCS.

MILITARY APPRECIATION IS EVERYDAY AT E.C.C.

It’s just another typical Saturday or Sunday morning, as the sun rises over the foothills that run along the US/Mexican border. Just southeast of San Diego, Highway 94 or the section of road called the Smuggler’s Run starts to awaken. The U.S. Border Patrol and U.S. Customs agents who have patrolled all night start their shift changes as new agents start to move out from their headquarters to take their place. The small cafes of Barrett Junction and Potereo will soon be buzzing with the sounds of high revving engines pulling into their parking lots as hungry riders start filling the seats to have a hearty breakfast. It’s around 8:30 a.m. and Motorcycle Clubs and groups of friends are meeting each other in the parking lots of the different Starbucks in Eastern Chula Vista and Rancho San Diego. Whether it is Sport bikes, Duo-sport Adventure bikes, or Cruisers, they all share in one cause, ride the Smuggler’s Run and the “Playground,” a small section of Highway 94 from the

turnoff to Tecate, Baja California, east to Potereo. If coming from Chula Vista, you’ll be riding eastbound along a nicely paved road with no real surprises, nice curves and long straight roads, as you ride pass Otay Lakes. You’ll pass along through rolling grasslands and Oak trees all the way to Hwy 94. When coming from Rancho San Diego, you will travel immediately through a long canyon with sometimes heavy traffic. Once you pass through the community of Jamul, it opens up into rolling grassland hills and some straight roads until it meets up with Otay Lakes Road. From here on out, all riders share the same route to get to the Smugglers Run and the Playground. After passing a Border Patrol checkpoint, you start to climb up into the foothills and canyons. The scenery is beautiful, and the traffic seems to dwindle as you head east. You will pass by the really small community of Delzura with a “For Rent” in the window of the Delzura Café, a once thriv-

ing business. The road continues to climb and tops out with a big sweeping turn and the real fun begins. Fast and furious on smooth pavement with dips and turns coming quickly until you hit the decent into Barrett Valley Junction section of the highway. Going down this hill is a big sweeper and an opportunity for the sport bikers to lay down a knee, racing away for a long downhill, and passing the Barrett Junction Café for a long straight ride through the valley and a long climb towards Tecate, Mexico. After a few turns and sweepers, you can go right on Route 188 towards Tecate and it’s famous Tecate Brewery (need a passport to re-enter the U.S.). Most riders continue eastbound and continue to climb and enter into “The Playground.” This portion of the road comes with lots and lots of twistys. The traffic becomes a lot less heavy, and favors the riders. It’s in this section of the Hwy. 94 that many riders decide to start doing laps up and down the hill and its turns. Most riders will continue on to the community of Potereo, and to the Potereo Café. This is the main stop, where many riders will stop and eat. From here, it’s either continue east from where you can ride all of the way to Arizona, take a side road that heads to the mountains of eastern San Diego County and Highway 8, or like many, head back the way they came. Back to the “Playground” it is, but once you pass the turn off to Tecate, the traffic becomes heavy as many folks from Mexico are heading into San Diego. “Smuggler’s Run” offers many an opportunity for an awesome ride, and companionship with fellow riders and friends. Stay safe!

Heard the one about the . . . you.” The first guy responds, “Well, I guess it was the thing to do - after all, I was married to her for 40 years.”

A Fisherman’s Tale

Two fellas are fishing in a boat under a bridge. One looks up and sees a funeral procession starting across the bridge. He stands up, takes off his cap, and bows his head. The procession crosses the bridge and the man puts on his cap, picks up his rod and reel, and continues fishing. The other guy says, “That was touching. I didn’t know you had it in

Social Security

A retired gentleman went to the social security office to apply for Social Security. The woman behind the counter asked him for his driver’s license to verify his age. He looked in his pockets and realized he had left his wallet at home. He told the woman that he was very sorry but he seemed to have left his wallet at home. “I will have to go home and come back later.” The woman says, “Unbutton your shirt.”

36 October 15, 2012 THE MILITARY PRESS

So he opens his shirt revealing curly silver hair. She says, “That silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me” and she processed his Social Security application. When he gets home, the man excitedly tells his wife about his experience at the social security office. She says, “You should have dropped your pants. You might have gotten disability too.”

Elevator Magic

A hillbilly family took a vacation to New York City. One day, the father took his son into a large building. They were amazed by everything they saw, especially the elevator at one end of the lobby. The boy asked, “What’s this, Paw?” The father responded, “Son, I have never seen anything like this in my life. I don’t know what it is!”

While the boy and his father were watching in wide-eyed astonishment, an old lady in a wheelchair rolled up to the moving walls and pressed a button. The walls opened and the lady rolled between them into a small room. The walls closed and the boy and his father watched small circles of lights above the walls light up. They continued to watch the circles light up in the reverse direction. The walls opened again, and a voluptuous twenty-fouryear old woman stepped out. The father turned to his son and said, “Go get your maw!”

DUCKS IN HEAVEN ! Three women die together in an accident and go to heaven. When they get there, St. Peter says, ‘We only have one rule here in heaven: Don’t step on the ducks!’ So they enter heaven, and sure enough, There are ducks all over the place. It is almost impossible not to step on a duck, And although they try their best to avoid them, The first woman accidentally steps on one. Along comes St. Peter with the ugliest man she ever saw. St. Peter chains them together and says, ‘Your punishment for stepping on a duck is to Spend eternity chained to this ugly man!’ The next day, The second woman steps accidentally on a duck, And along comes St. Peter, Who doesn’t miss a thing. With him is another extremely ugly man. He chains them together With the same admonishment as for the first woman. The third woman has observed all this and, Not wanting to be chained For all eternity to an ugly man, is very, VERY careful where she steps. She manages to go months without stepping on any ducks, then one day St.Peter comes up to her with the most handsome man she has ever laid eyes on .... Very tall, long eyelashes, muscular. St. Peter chains them together without saying a word. The happy woman says, ‘I wonder what I did to deserve being chained to you for all of eternity?’ The guy says, ‘I don’t know about you, But I stepped on a Duck.

The impact of the shootings was dramatic. The event triggered a nationwide student strike that forced hundreds of colleges and universities to close. H. R. Haldeman, a top aide to President Richard Nixon, suggests the shootings had a direct impact on national politics. In The Ends of Power, Haldeman (1978) states that the shootings at Kent State began the slide into Watergate, eventually destroying the Nixon administration. Beyond the direct effects of the May 4th, the shootings have certainly come to symbolize the deep political and social divisions that so sharply divided the country during the Vietnam War era.
