Desperately seeking: C
HONEST POLITICIANS By Joel S. Hirschhorn The phrase honest politician has become an oxymoron. We should not be impressed by the prospect of having the first woman or first Latino president. What would be far more intriguing would be to have the first honest president, if not ever, certainly in a very long time. Presidents in recent memory have been excellent liars, contributing mightily to our culture of dishonesty. Bill Clinton had the audacity to look right into the TV camera and blatantly lie to the American public. George W. Bush has probably set a record for official lying, though it might take many decades to fully document them. Carl M. Cannon saw the bigger truth: “posterity will judge [George W. Bush] not so much by whether he told

the truth but whether he recognized what the truth actually was.”
Things have gotten so bad that hardly anyone can even imagine an honest president. But if we don’t expect an honest president, how can we expect to trust government? Don Nash made these insightful observations, “If America was ever faced with a politician who
remember when...
spoke truth to the people, no one would know what to make of the oddity. This politician could probably not get elected to office. Sadly, Americans can’t handle the truth. “Lies, then, are the consequential destruction of American democracy. Little by very little, the lies and lying politicians have chipped away at America’s Constitution and the American form of government.” Rampant lying by politicians is a major reason why so many Americans have stopped paying attention to politics, stopped hoping for political reforms, and stopped voting Lying politicians probably tell themselves that the public cannot take the truth. Many convince themselves (lie to themselves) that lies of omission are not really serious like lies of commission.

HONEST
Cont’d. from Page 3 During a primary season it is worthwhile to look at Republican and Democratic candidates from this honestpresident perspective. A truly honest president would have the greatest loyalty to honoring the rule of law, the Constitution and the needs of the public, rather than what we have grown used to: greatest loyalty to their party and the moneyed interests funding it. If the nation really wants a change president, honesty should be a requirement. An honest president would threaten the corrupt, dishonest and rigged twoparty political system, so one getting a presidential nomination is improbable. How could an honest person obtain financing for their campaign? How could they get diverse groups to support their candidacy? Candidates tell different groups what pleases them, and eventually contradict themselves. Flipflopping sounds bad, but is even worse when the new position is a lie. Some may suggest that a candidate does not have to be honest during campaigning, but only be honest once elected president. But can someone with real character find it easy to lie repeatedly during campaigning and then have the ability to stop lying once elected? I think not. Besides, how can citizens detect the potential honest president if that person is behaving like all normal lying candidates during campaigns? A truly honest person must
stand out and be seen as exceptional by the public because of their habitual honesty. But the candidates most likely

their support. This means that most people reject choosing a candidate on the basis of their perceived honesty. They knowingly choose dishonest politicians. Why?
lic policies. Truth-telling politicians usually say things that people would rather not hear and or think about. Meanwhile the mainstream media and pundits, promoting confrontation and horse races to entertain and keep their audiences, are reluctant to call lying politicians liars. Instead, they use oblique language and euphemisms to conceal the truth about lying. They are as dishonest as the politicians they talk about. How interesting it would be to have media people ask candidates something like: Are you being the most honest person you can be in this campaign? I don’t think the majority of dishonest ones would not say “yes.” Instead, they would dance and blabber. Tragically, Americans have become used to lying politicians. Can our democracy survive when most people believe that an honest president is both impossible and unnecessary? Of course, honesty by itself is no guarantee that someone will be a great president. Nor is it by itself sufficient reason to vote for someone. But imagine if we insisted that it be a necessary, minimum requirement for supporting politicians. In the end, without honesty, every reason we use to vote for someone is a joke. Delusional thinking about candidates has produced our delusional democracy. Time to stop voting for liars. Better to not vote at all. Voting for liars only encourages more lies.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Reader sounds off on VA program to reduce homelessness So, has Sgt. Leal’s question, “...out of that $300 million (in 2014), how much of that do you really think will make it to the vets?” ever been answered? I know it is maddening that servicerelated disabilities classification is so horribly back-logged when compared, by stark contrast, to my own classification approximately 20 years ago and very limited delay in my recent re-classification. YES, that is an option that Veterans are NOT normally advised of, so now all of you reading can check into it! Your article starts out with, and generally alludes to, male Veterans. What happened to all the female Veterans? I can tell you that if a female Vet is single, has one or two children, is an alcoholic, drug addict, brain-damaged, or a rape/abuse victim, ALL the help she can ask for is there just waiting. Even if you are a male Veteran with wife and kids, there is PLENTY of help for them — PETS and ALL. But, be a female disabled Veteran with a husband, and not even CALFRESH (CA food stamps program) considers you disabled OR eligible for food assistance. However, the true homelessness conundrum is: It is not enough that you exist, are alive, and need to remain that way; you are NOT employable or even reliable if you are applying without a 'physical' street address. P.O. boxes are definitely NOT allowed. It does not even matter WHY you are homeless, searching for a job is not an option BECAUSE you are homeless. And it has been my experience that NOT ONE SINGLE potential employer has EVER been willing to hire me, duty to my country or not, as long as 'the applicant' is not living in some government sanctioned abode. So, de-
spite the fact that the state of our pathetic economy is also keeping my husband from employment and a livable wage, it is unethically assumed that we SHOULD be able to help ourselves. Well, we cannot, and of all the non and not-for-profits organizations that I have ever requested assistance from, the help to date came begrudgingly from the VVSD because I am NOT drug-addicted, an alcoholic, or brain-damaged. Well, wait, maybe I am brain-damaged, from trying to wrap my mind around all the help I am NOT GETTING. Having been jobless, therefore homeless, for exactly four years now, I can assure you that there are fewer than a handful of non and not-forprofits that I have NOT applied to for assistance. Some of them were quite snobbish, but ALL were just incapable of helping due to “lack of funds.” For the most part, they were just sheepishly apologetic but all they ever did for me was to keep referring me round and round in frustratingly HOPELESS circles back and forth to each other, over and over and over. I pray someone's "Got your 6" Sgt. Leal and you have my respect for your angelic workings. Please spread the love to San Diego. Thank you Military Press for bringing this to light and helping where all else is failing miserably. — Brenda Barton-Espino

How to find true happiness There are different types of happiness. There’s ‘momentary happiness,’ which is what Rick is referring to. Momentary happiness is happiness you feel in the moment you’re doing something. For example, the moment you’re in a meaningful deep discussion or sharing a common interest you experience momentary happiness. And it’s true; Rick would experience more momentary happiness with Margie. But there’s another type of happiness that I call ‘reflective happiness.’ Reflective happiness is that feeling you get when you reflect back on your life and you feel proud of your choices. You’re not doing anything in that moment to make you happy, but you feel

My point is that happiness is NOT When your son shows up, you would simply about pleasure in the moment. experience momentary happiness if It’s also a result of being able to reflect you opened the door and gave him a on your life and see that you embraced soothing hug. But you’d experience values like loyalty, commitment, serreflective happiness years later if you vice, and sacrifice (for children, for exshowed tough love and didn’t answer ample). You could have years of fun, but if you can’t look at your life and see that you’ve embraced the highest ideals of humanity, you will NOT be happy. You might experience momentary pleasure, but that’s different than true happiness. I’m not saying that Rick is obligated to a life of misery in the name of his oath. Depending on his personal and religious beliefs, maybe he does have options. What I am saying is that ending a marriage in an effort to achieve happiness is not a simple transaction. When someone ends a marriage, no matter how bad the circumstances, they’ve just put a few notches on the side of UNhappiness. Again, I’m not saying that a marriage should never end. It depends on the circumstances as well as one’s personal and religious beliefs. But a person has to realize when they end a marriage they’re breaking an oath, failing in their unconditional loyalty, impacting the lives of children, and hurting the feelings of another human being. These are not insignificant matters. And, in my opinion, these are matters that greatly affect a person’s happiness. Loyalty, commitment, service, sacrifice; these are not words commonly used in modern culture. But if you delve into the wisdom literature (both modern and ancient), you will notice that these are the characteristics of a meaningful and fulfilling life. In short, these values pave a path to HAPPINESS. I have known people who were deeply devoted to their spouse despite the fact that they were treated badly in return. As their lives past, there was sadness because of certain unhappy times. And maybe even wonder about what might have been with someone else. But there was also happiness because of a lifetime of unwavering commitment to certain values and service to certain people including their children. Rick might think that God sent him Margie so he could be with her and be happy. But maybe God sent Margie to Rick so that he could choose to NOT be with her and be happy. In other words, Margie gives Rick the opportunity to manifest in his life some of humanity’s highest ideals . . . and THOSE IDEALS HAPPINESS, cont’d. on Page 25

Jobs for 300,000 U.S. veterans in oil OCEANSIDE, Calif. — HirePatriots. com has been selected by numerous companies in the oil industry as their hiring initiative for U.S. veterans. On March 12, Mark Baird, the founder of HirePatriots.com will be the keynote speaker to 1,500 oil-related companies. They are eager to know how to hire U.S. veterans to fill their multitude of positions. One of the industries that want to hire U.S. veterans is the Specialized Carriers and Rigging Association. They drive and manipulate extremely powerful tractors that are able to move objects that weigh as much as a million pounds! This requires a coordinated team of people dedicated to precision. Who better to fill these positions that veterans? Last week we spoke with an oil related company that cleans oil derricks. This is a tough job. But it pays extremely well. A U.S. veteran in Michigan who has been struggling to find employment took one of these jobs last week. He will make at least $80,000 a year. He will probably make more because he has signed up early and has time to be trained to be a manager. The oil industry has thousands of jobs. But many of these jobs require laboring in the hot sun or in cold temps.
A lot of people who are not used to such work quit without even giving notice. The oil industry is frustrated with hiring such people. They are turning to U.S. veterans because they believe that veterans are more trustworthy and honorable. And I have assured them that most are. If you have a desire to make good money with a team of others veterans. If you are not afraid of getting dirty and sweaty. If you are a “man’s man” who word is his bond, contact me and I will send your information on to these companies. Try to respond before March 12 so that I can distribute your resume on that day. College Soldiers to Summits now waives accepting applications app fees for vets In Columbia College’s ongoing effort to serve veteran students, the college recently announced it will waive application fees for veteran students. The fee waiver is available to new veteran students enrolling in undergraduate and graduate degree programs and is applicable with the March Session, which begins March 17. For those new veteran students who want to start or continue their educational journeys, now is an excellent time to go for greater. “As an institution, we pride ourselves on helping servicemembers and veterans further their educational goals,” said Mike Lederle, assistant dean for Military and Federal Programs at Columbia College. “Lifelong learning is critical for our veterans and their families, and waiving the application fee allows them to take the first step toward achieving their educational goals.” To be eligible, new veteran students need to have been honorably discharged and must provide their DD214, DD215, NGB22 or NGB23 to verify veteran status. The waiver is not retroactive for current veteran students. More than 25 percent of Columbia College students either are servicemembers, veterans or their dependents. The college has been named “best for vets” by Military Times and “military friendly” by Military Advanced Education. In 2013, the college celebrated 40 years of educating military and adult learners. During the 201213 academic year, more than 7,000 military students completed Columbia College coursework at campuses across the country. Of those 35 locations, 18 are located on military bases, including two in California. Columbia College-Los Alamitos was established in 1997 by invitation of the California Army National Guard. Today it continues to serve civilian and military adult learners in the greater Los Angeles area and Orange County. Columbia CollegeSan Diego was established in 2009 to meet the higher education needs of the personnel at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, other area military installations and to serve the broader civilian community. The Los Alamitos campus offers three associate and four bachelor’s degree programs in-seat, and the San Diego campus offers one associate and one bachelor’s degree program in-seat. Both campuses offer 27 associate, bachelor’s and master’s degrees online.

AF will take action over POW/MIA emblem photo By Jon Harper, StarsandStripes.com WASHINGTON — The Air Force is “disappointed” in the airman who appeared in a photo that is being circulated of her posing with her tongue in the mouth of the prisoner of war depicted on the iconic black-and-white POW/ MIA emblem. “We do not yet have all details behind the photo, but it certainly is a concern; it’s a concern any time someone shows disrespect for prisoners of war and those missing in action. They deserve our utmost respect and we must always remember their sacrifice and the legacy they’ve left for us as men and women serving our nation. “I want to make it clear that this is not a reflection of Airmen who wear
this uniform; it is a case of poor judgment of one Airman ... to say we are disappointed would be an understatement. We are gathering all the details and will take appropriate action at the appropriate level. Our Airmen fully understand the significance of the POW/ MIA flag and the sacrifice of the men

Rachelle Smith, a spokeswoman for Fairchild Air Force Base, told Stars and Stripes that the airman in the photo is Staff Sgt. Cherish Byers. She is with the 92nd Security Forces Squadron stationed at Fairchild Air Force Base, Wash. Byers was a senior airman when the photo was taken. An investigation into the incident was initiated Friday morning, Smith said. Joe Davis, a spokesman for the Veterans of Foreign Wars, was not amused by the photo. “There is nothing funny about [being] disrespectful and crude.”

Defense Department to cut Army to pre-WWII size By Halimah Abdullah The Department of Defense plans to scale down the nation’s Army to its pre-World War II size and do away with an entire class of Air Force attack jets in an attempt to cut military spending, which mushroomed after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, according to reports. The plan, backed by Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, as first reported by The New York Times, positions the
military to handle any enemy but will leave the armed forces with much fewer resources to take on lengthy missions abroad. The dwindled budget also reflects the current political climate, with a President who has pledged to pull back from extended and expensive wars abroad in an era of federal funding cutbacks. The budget is to be presented Monday.
Pentagon considering shock treatment to boost troops
Hagel proposes cutting the Army to 440,000 to 450,000 troops, according to the Times. Army troop levels already were supposed to go down to 490,000, from their height of 570,000 after the 9/11 attacks. The budget, does, however, protect funding for cyberwarfare and special operations, a reflection of the evolving way in which the U.S. has approached fighting overseas, using tactics that
don’t necessarily rely so heavily on land fighters. The proposal also preserves money for controversial and costly F-35 fighter planes. The proposed cuts will probably draw sharp criticism from some members of Congress, especially those with large Army bases in their states and districts, or whose economies depend on building and servicing parts for the Air Force planes that will be eliminated.

Early experiments using “noninvasive” brain stimulation have been performed on several dozen volunteers
By Bryan Bender The Boston Globe WASHINGTON — The Pentagon is exploring a novel way to extend troops’ attention spans and sharpen their reaction times: stimulate the brain with low levels of electricity. It sounds like science fiction, but commanders in search of more effective tools than the ubiquitous cups of coffee and energy drinks are testing medical treatments designed to treat
such brain disorders as depression to determine whether they can also improve the attentiveness of sleepdeprived but otherwise healthy troops. Early experiments using “noninvasive” brain stimulation have been performed on several dozen volunteers at the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. The results show the technique improves both alertness and acuity, researchers say.

Veteran entrepreneur project The Vets seeks sponsorships Resource Starting in 2014 unprecedented numbers of veterans will re-enter the job market, joining hundreds of thousands of former military troops cur-
rently seeking employment. The current job market is limited. Many veterans face significant challenges in finding a job. In fact, studies
JEWELRY
show that unemployment among veterans age 24-35 is as high as 17%. The inability to obtain employment is recognized as a major contributor to veteran depression, divorce, and despair. Veteran Entrepreneurs Today, “VET,” is a program produced and supervised by Honoring Our Troops, a San Diego based non-profit corporation (http://www.hrtroops.org) dedicated to filling the needs of returning veterans by supporting them to start small businesses. This unique program coordinates “think tank” groups of veterans, with an emphasis on veterans with service connected disabilities, who express an interest in starting their own business. The group meets weekly, shares challenges, and gains insights. Together they focus on goals and action steps with accountability to each other and the group leaders. Participants will receive follow-up support for 6 months after the initial 12-week group. VET musters local small business community experts on topics such as marketing, legal issues, taxes, management, human resources, and other small business concerns to provide weekly topic discussions/presentations in a round-table format. Veteran participation is free to qualified participants.
This program model is the first of its kind. There is nothing like it nationwide. A few programs offer one-off workshops, but none offer the handson, close support required to insure success. We are seeking corporate sponsorship for this worthy program. A full description is available. Please partner with us to help our military vets become successful business owners. 8 tips to save big on car rentals If you’re like most drivers, at some point you’ll have to rent a car. Maybe you need a reliable vehicle for vacation or while your car’s in the shop. Many drivers assume rental car rates are all the same and don’t bother to shop around. But taking a little time can save you a lot of bucks. Here are eight tips that can put you in the driver’s seat to snag a great deal.
1. Plan ahead.
Walking into a rental agency or up to a rental counter at the airport without a reservation is risky business. Odds are you’ll pay more, have to choose from a limited and more expensive selection of vehicles, or find that the agency has no available cars. Also, the fees, taxes and rates for rental cars often are less at off-airport locations. If it won’t wreck your travel plans, you could save big by taking public transit into town and renting a car there. However, be aware that off-airport locations may have limited selections and restricted hours, so make that reservation. “Some agencies now offer additional discounts if you prepay,” says Ogechi Namme, product manager for USAA’s rental car program. “Depending on the dates you rent, you could receive a free weekend day or free upgrade. Often, agencies will discount your rental further the longer you keep the vehicle, so check a few dates before you lock in your rate.”
2. Verify your reservation in advance.
To avoid hassles caused by overbooking, confirm your reservation and vehicle type a few days before your trip. If the car you reserved is unavailable when you arrive, ask for an upgrade
at no extra cost, or for the company to get the vehicle you need from another location or agency. In a worst-case scenario, in which no agency has any cars available, request that the rental company reimburse you for taxi expenses.
3. Add up loyalty rewards.
Consider redeeming some loyalty rewards. While these programs were designed with businesses in mind, families and individuals can take advantage of their perks.

4. Be wary of Web deals.
Popular travel websites allow you to compare offers from multiple companies, displaying all taxes and fees upfront. Beware of websites, however, that promise deep discounts if you commit to booking without knowing all the details in advance. You could face restrictions and fees if your travel plans change.
5. Avoid the call of extra, extra.
Add-ons are critical revenue generators for the car rental industry and can increase your bill by 20% or more. Resist the temptation to purchase any extras you don’t really need. You can always bring your own GPS or use your phone for navigation.

6. Play by the rules.
Be sure you understand the terms of the rental contract. When you pick up your vehicle, go over the details with the rental agent. Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 25 years old or charge younger drivers extra, and they someRENTAL, cont’d. on Page 25

Australian wiggles into fluid portion of NBA Draft board By Scott Howard-Cooper He waits and works out, an Australia resident far from regular NBA scouting, a high school student whose season has ended. Well played, Dante Exum. Without moving, Exum has moved into a very good spot, resting while the others in the lead pack for the June 26 NBA Draft face the challenges of NCAA life, avoiding the scrutiny and likely enjoying a clear path for months. He can hang out and still move Draft boards, and probably will. All of that is part of what remains a very fluid top five or six -- even for the top one. Jabari Parker is getting votes from executives, Joel Embiid is getting votes; the decision should ultimately come down to the need of the lottery winner. Until Exum sits his way all the way to No. 1, of course. The top 30 just before the All-Star break among draft-eligible prospects, after numerous consultations with front offices: 1. Jabari Parker, Duke | SF 6-8 235 A prototype small forward with skill, size and intelligence beyond his freshman standing. Parker is not a great athlete, compounded by shooting struggles lately, but teams feel he has enough pop to become an NBA star. 2. Joel Embiid, Kansas | C 7-0 240 Executives don’t care that he is thinking out loud about returning for his sophomore season. There have been top prospects who said flat-out they
were staying in school and still shook David Stern’s hand on stage in June. 3. Andrew Wiggins, Kansas | SG-SF 6-8 200 The son of former Bulls, Rockets and 76ers guard Mitchell Wiggins has not lived up to the hype, but front offices are not drafting for the best player of 2013-14. Andrew Wiggins still has a game and physical gifts that translate very well. 4. Julius Randle, Kentucky | PF 6-9 250 Randle went from a very impressive start to a cooling trend once he got to SEC play, but nothing changes the fact that he could score inside against NBA defenses right now, part of a varied offensive game that includes passing skills and footwork. 5. Dante Exum, Australia | PG-SG 6-6 190 The decision to turn pro after considering a season at an American university had been expected. There is great interest from front offices over a prospect who starred in the under-19 world tournament last summer. 6. Marcus Smart, Oklahoma St | PG 6-4 220 Smart will be a physical force, has a chance to be very good defensively and shows a great attitude. But what a risk to take a point guard who can’t
distribute (assist-to-turnover ratio of less than 2-1 as of Feb. 6) or shoot (41.9 percent at the same stage). 7. Noah Vonleh, Indiana | PF 6-10 240 One of the climbers of the early season has maintained his standing with a display of physical play inside and signs of being able to develop a scoring touch away from the paint. 8. Aaron Gordon, Arizona | PF-SF 6-9 225 The lack of a perimeter game is a concern to some, especially for a player who might play small forward. But Gordon is an elite athlete who plays hard and has a good feel for the game and doesn’t turn 19 until six weeks before 2014 training camp. 9. Gary Harris, Michigan St | SG 6-4 210 Regarded as a top perimeter weapon who can also get to the rim, Harris has recovered from a slow start while dealing with a sprained ankle to become an offensive factor again. 10. Dario Saric, Croatia | SF 6-10 235 A strong possibility for the 2013 lottery before withdrawing late, Saric has very good instincts and can play in transition or halfcourt. The concerns are that he is turnover prone and has an inconsistent shot.

NBA trade rumors:
Utah Jazz rejected trades that would have landed them first-round picks By Josh Hill The NBA trade deadline came and went without so much as a whimper from the Utah Jazz, but their lack of activity wasn’t for a lack of effort on the part of other teams in the NBA. While trades were flying on Thursday, the Jazz were reportedly turning away deals that would have landed them first-round picks. According to Chad Ford from ESPN, the reason that Utah was turning away these otherwise valuable trade assets, was because teams were skiing for Marvin Williams in return. While firstround picks are highly coveted in this year’s draft, the Jazz valued Williams more and rejected all offers. This may anger fans a bit, as adding young talent to the Jazz is definitely a plus, but giving up Williams doesn’t seem like a bright move. Utah is seemingly convinced they can keep him in Utah long-term, otherwise picking up those offered draft picks would have been a no-brainer of a move. Instead, Utah has held onto Wil-
Marvin Williams liams and hopefully that gesture goes a long way in keeping Williams in town.

CHARGERS REPORT
Previewing positions of need:
CORNERBACK
By Art Garcia With the NFL free agency period set to begin March 11 and the draft scheduled for May 8, GM Tom Telesco and his staff have their work cut out for them while trying to fill various positions of need on the roster. In this report, the focus will be on the cornerback position. Although the secondary improved enough over the latter part of the season to help get the team a Wild Card berth, the Chargers finished the season tied for No. 26 in the league with just 11 interceptions; and No. 29 in the league by allowing an average of 258.7 passing yards a game.
Depending on which draft ‘expert’ you follow, opinions differ on various mock draft boards on which player the Chargers should take if they do choose a cornerback with the 25 pick of the first round. With the annual NFL Combine being held this past week in Indianapolis, representatives from every team were able to get a face-to-face meeting with some the top prospects entering the draft. Prior to combine, three of the most well-known draft

Mock Draft 1: Bradley Roby, CB, Ohio State; Mock Draft 2: Marcus Roberson, 6’0/195, CB, Florida. Kiper Mock #1: “Roby isn’t yet a complete package at cornerback, but he has top-end speed and quickness, with fluid hips that allow him to turn and run with any kind of receiver. Where he needs to improve is in his ball skills and in not grabbing too much, which will cause him to draw too many flags at the NFL level. But with refinement he can be really good. San Diego was leaky in the secondary all season and could use a talent upgrade.” Kiper Mock #2: “The Chargers did a pretty good job of scheming their way around some holes at corner during the late-season run, but there’s no question they could use another cornerback (or two?), particularly because I think that defensive line and pass rush could take another step forward next season. Roberson can get a little lackadaisical, but it can also look easy for him out there because he has good instincts and a sense of where routes are going. He has long arms and can get his hands on the ball. He simply needs to be more physical against the run and grab a little less in coverage.”

Todd McShay:
Mock Draft 1: Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State; Mock Draft 2: Loucheiz Purifoy, 6’0/185, CB, Florida. McShay -- Mock #1: “The Chargers’ top need is a pass-rushing 3-4 outside linebacker, so if Buffalo’s Khalil Mack drops to this spot, he’s the slam-dunk pick. But with him off the board in this scenario, there really isn’t another 3-4 OLB who belongs in the first round. San Diego also needs O-line help, but I think Gilbert could be the pick here. He came back hungry this season after a subpar 2012 campaign, and proved to be one of the top cornerbacks in college football. He is a playmaker who is good both in coverage and versus the run, and he has very good size for the position. Other CB options include Oregon’s Ifo Ekpre-Olomu and Michigan State’s Darqueze Dennard.” McShay – Mock #2: “The Chargers need to upgrade at cornerback and in the return game, and Purifoy could help in both areas. He is raw with his technique but has the potential to develop into a playmaker at corner because of his very good ball skills, and because he’s one of the most naturally talented defensive backs in this draft. If the Chargers pass on Purifoy, they could go smaller but equally skilled and more polished cover corner in TCU’s Jason Verret. If they take a CB here, they could target a pass-rusher like Auburn’s Dee Ford in Round 2 and a guard like Baylor’s Cyril Richardson in Round 3.”
The Endzone
The Chargers received good news over the weekend when Nick Hardwick notified management that he will return to anchor the offensive line at least one more year. Hardwick, 33, had one of his best years at center and was the only player along the offensive front to start every game in 2013. With Hardwick now in the fold the front office can now concentrate on what to do with three other veterans on offense with high cap numbers – guard Jeromey Clary ($4.55 million in non-guaranteed base salary), receiver Eddie Royal ($4.5 million) and fullback Le’Ron McClain ($2.5 million). At CBS Sports, both Rob Rang and Pete Prisco have the Chargers taking two corners as well – Rang predicts the choice will be Darqueze Dennard from Michigan State while Prisco says the University of Florida’s Marcus Robinson is the man. Sports Illustrated’s Don Banks has cornerback Jason Verrett from TCU being taken by the bolts in his first mock draft. Salary cap numbers provided through ESPN.com’s Eric D. Williams and draft quotes through ESPN.com Insiders.
TEST DRIVE:
2014 Subaru Outback By Greg Zyla This week, we’re driving Subaru’s 2014 Outback Limited, this time with a 3.6R Boxer six-cylinder engine versus the 2.5i four-cylinder we tested last January. Staying true to its AWD technology while making improvements each year, Subaru’s first 4x4 went on sale in America way back in 1972, when both 2WD and 4WD vehicles were available. Notable is the fact that Sir Malcolm Bricklin, he of Bricklin auto fame, brought Subaru to America back in 1968, although he never receives much credit for doing so. By 1987 Subaru was touting its new full-time AWD, and then 10 years later city and 30 highway announced it would drop two-wheel EPA numbers while the six-cylinder dedrive from its offerings to concentrate livers 256-horses and 247 torque with a drop in fuel 100-percent on economy to 17 AWD expertise. city and 25 highOutback, Likes: Pricing, value, ratings, way. Standard safety features include traction control, anti-lock four wheel discs, advanced airbags including side curtain, vehicle dynamic control and the famous Subaru Symmetrical AWD system, which is a high tech wonder. Important numbers include a wheelbase of 107.9 inches, 3,649 curb weight, 34.3 cu. ft. of cargo space expandable to 71.3 with rear seat lowered, 8.7 inch ground clearance, 3,000 lb. tow capacity and an 18.5 gallon fuel tank. Subaru is without question one of the auto industry’s AWD principals, succeeding in a market jammed with competition. Even more impressive is Subaru’s family of vehicles, where for $17,895 you can park a new Impreza AWD in your driveway and enjoy all the same safety and AWD benefits Subaru is known for. The Outback is a best buy in the compact to mid-size wagon/Crossover class, be it entry level to Limited.

Surgeon talk

Just for Laughs
A boy went to his grandfather’s house for a week. On the first night at dinner he found a thick, slimy goo on his plate, so he said to his grandfather, “Grandpa is this plate clean?” “As clean as cold water can get them,” his grandfather answered. This went on for the rest of the week. On the last day when the boy was leaving, the dog wouldn’t let him through. So he said “Grandpa your dog won’t let me through.” His grandfather replied, “Cold Water, go lie down.”
Make up your mind
A man was in his front yard attempting to fly a kite with his son. Every time the kite went up into the air, it came crashing down. This went on for a while until his wife stuck her head out of the front door and yelled, “You need more tail!” The father yelled back, “Screw

Five surgeons are discussing who makes the best patients to operate on. The first surgeon says, “I like to see accountants on my operating table, because when you open them up, everything inside is numbered.” The second responds, “Yeah, but you should try electricians. Everything inside them is color-coded.” The third surgeon says, “No, I really think librarians are the best; everything inside them is in alphabetical order.” The fourth surgeon chimes in, “You know, I like construction workers. They always understand when you have a few parts left over at the end and when the job takes longer than you said it would.” But the fifth surgeon, Dr. Morris Fishbein, shuts them all up when he observes, “The French are the easiest to operate on. There’s no guts, no heart, no balls and no spine. Plus the head and ass are interchangeable.”

He says, “In Mexico, our glasses are so cheap we don’t need to drink with the same one twice.” The redneck girl, cool as a cucumber, picks up her beer, downs it in one gulp, throws the glass into the air, whips out her .45, and shoots the Mexican. Catching her glass, setting it on the bar, and calling for a refill, she says, “In America we have so many illegal Mexicans that we don’t have to drink with the same ones twice.”
The game of “If this…”
One day a husband and wife were in the bathroom. The wife was getting out of the shower and the husband grabs her boobs and says, “If these were firmer you wouldn’t need a bra.” The wife was repulsed by his behavior and ignores him. The next week the two are again in the bathroom and while the wife was getting out of the shower he grabs her behind and says, “If this was firmer you wouldn’t need a girdle.” The wife is now mad and is plotting her revenge. One day a week later the husband is getting out of the shower and the wife grabs his manhood and says, “If this was a little bit bigger I wouldn’t need your brother.”

A blonde wanted to go ice fishing. She’d seen many books on the subject, and finally, after getting all the necessary “tools” together, she made for the nearest frozen lake. After positioning her comfy footstool, she started to make a circular cut in the

ice. Suddenly- from the sky - a voice boomed, “THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE!” Startled, the blonde moved further down the ice, poured a cup of cappuccino from a Thermos, and began to cut yet another hole. Again, from the heavens the voice bellowed, “THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE!” The blonde, now quite worried, moved way down to the opposite end of the ice, set up her stool, and tried again to cut her hole. The voice came once more. “THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE!” She stopped, looked skyward and said, “Is that you Lord?” the voice replied, “NO, THIS IS THE MANAGER OF THE ICE RINK.

Product placement
A market researcher called at a house and his knock was answered by a young woman with three small children running around her. He asked her if she minded replying to his questions and she agreed. He asked her if she knew his company, Cheeseborough- Ponds. When she said no, he mentioned that among their many products was Vaseline and she certainly knew of that product. When asked if she used it, the answer was “Yes.” Asked how she used it, she said, “To assist sexual intercourse.” The interviewer was amazed. He said, “I always ask that question because everyone uses our product and they always say they use it for the child’s bicycle chain, or the gate hinge; but I know that most use it for sexu-
A sign in the window of a bar advertised for a Piano Player and one day a scroungy looking old guy entered the bar asking about the job. The bartender was put off by the man’s looks, but pointed him to the piano in the corner. As the old man began to play, the room was filled with the most beautiful, melodious music anyone in the bar had ever heard. During the song, all talk stopped and when the music ended, the patrons leaped to their feet; yelling and applauding wildly. “Hey, Old Timer,” said the barkeep. “You’re really good. What was that beautiful song?” “I call it ‘Drop them panties Momma, I’m gonna do ya all night long.” Momentarily stunned, the bartender held his temper and said, “Interesting title, Do you have another?” The old man nodded and broke into a foot stomping honky-tonk piece that brought the bar patrons to their feet. The crowd clapped along until it was finished, then broke into a thunderous round of applause and filled his tip mug to overflowing. “You are amazing,” exclaimed the barkeep. “Just amazing! What do you call that one?” “Oh, that’s a little ditty I call ‘I wanna spank yer bare butt, baby, till you scream and holler.’ Then, he rose, excused himself and shuffled
off to use the restroom. While he was gone, the patrons begged the bartender to give the eccentric old musician the job. So, when the old man returned, the barkeep said, “Mister, you are the greatest piano player I’ve ever heard. If you want the job, it’s yours.” Suddenly, the barkeep noticed that the man had not finished his trip to the restroom. Not wanting to embarrass the old fellow, he leaned toward him and whispered, ...... “ Sir, do you know your johnson’s hanging out for all the world to see?” “Know it?” the geezer grinned. “Hell, I WROTE IT!”
Those Americans…
Three men were sitting in a bar, one was French, one Itailan, and one American. The Frenchman said “Last night I made love to my wife four times, and this morning she kept telling me how much she worshipped me.” So the Itailan said “Well, I had sex with my wife six times last night, and this morning she was too exhaused to speak.” The American remained silent, so the Frenchman smugly asks “So how many times did you have sex with your wife last night?” “Once.” the American replied. “And what did she say this morning?” asked the Itailan. The American replies “DON’T STOP!”
