THE PHILIPPINES’ WAR ON DRUGS The Philippines’ war on drugs has killed thousands, drawn global condemnation and enmeshed the police force in scandal. Yet President Rodrigo Duterte’s bloody campaign is overwhelmingly popular here.
The reasons are manifold, but they hinge on Filipinos’ apparent willingness to overlook the death toll as long as Duterte’s government satisfies their individual economic and political interests, analysts say. The politician promised to eradicate criminals — “kill them all,” he said — and Filipinos appear to view Duterte as keeping his word.“The war on drugs has been synonymous with the president. They mutually feed each other,” said Francisco Ashley Acedillo, a former lawmaker. “Until one is undone, the other will not be undone.” Duterte has urged members of the public to kill suspected criminals and drug addicts. The President however is always emphatic for the people -- asserting that the government has the obligation to protect its people from the drug menace. “You destroy my people, you destroy my children, and I will destroy you”. Policemen are also victims of the drug war, which represent” grim testimonials to the reality that those involved in the drug cartel will not allow themselves to be arrested or captured alive,” the Presidential Spokesperson said. He urged critics who alleged that extrajudicial killings are state-sponsored to file the appro-
priate charges in local courts, saying that failure to undertake judicial action can mean that critics are only “engaged in conjectures and politicizing the matter to the advantage of drug personalities and criminals.”
This is Manila: A city caught in growing violence under Duterte’s rule In September, the government cited an 82 percent satisfaction rating for the drug war in a Social Weather Stations survey as it pushed back on a U.N. resolution calling for the investigation of human rights vio- lations. On the campaign trail, Duterte diagnosed drugs as the scourge of society, claiming their use was connected with rape and murder. The narrative struck a chord with his supporters, propelling him to victory in 2016 elections. (Officials in 2015 estimated there were 1.8 million drug users in the Philippines.) Duterte was the only candidate who offered a solution to the prevalence of drugs, a longtime frustration among the urban poor,

a sovereign nation. He said that Obama should have lodged a complaint before the UN rather than reprimanding him in public. I said, ‘You are a son of a bitch. I said, ‘You can go to hell.’ I said ‘You think you’re better than me. If you don’t know how to respect others, you son of a bitch. You fool.” The president’s remarks came just weeks after he apologized to Obama for uttering profane words against him. During his visit to Israel in September, he said that he hoped Obama would forgive him, adding: ”I have forgiven you”. Another result of Obama’s perceived disrespect, the president said, was his decision to forge closer alliances with Russia and China — traditional rivals of the US. He even once threatened to “break up” with America, cancel their mutual defence pact and order the pullout of all American troops in the Philippines. However, the tensions between the two countries have eased since President Duterte welcomed Trump’s election and described him as a “good friend” to the Philippines.
Since Duterte took office, more than 6,000 people have been killed in his campaign to purge the Philippines of illegal drugs and those associated with them, according to reliable estimates by local media. The victims—suspected users and pushers—do not enjoy due process, and they are always killed at night, sometimes inside their own homes. The perpetrators are vigilantes, hired guns and likely cops too. Duterte made no secret that this would happen. “All of you who are into drugs, you sons of bitches, I will really kill you,” he said last April. Duterte has even admitted to personally killing a few himself while he was mayor. The reaction of the international community has been one of outrage and reproach.

President Duterte has said that Donald Trump is “cleaning the mess” of US-Philippine relations left by his predecessor in the White House. Speaking on Thursday (November 22), he said the country’s “strained” ties with the US began when President Obama criticized his crackdown on illegal drugs. He then recalled telling Obama to “go to hell” for disrespecting a fellow leader of

MANNY ‘PACMAN’ PACQUIAO: STILL IN THE RING 40-year-old Manny Pacquiao is still one of the most ferocious fighters in boxing. I’ve been a fan of the great Filipino boxing legend Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao for a long time and I am still astonished that he is fighting as a 40-year-old Senator and teaching these young bucks a lesson in the ring. Pacquiao is still one of the most ferocious fighters in the sport and he fights with all his might in the ring. No matter how big or tall the opponent is he will never back down from a tussle. He is a true warrior. I will see people question his punching power and mention that he hasn’t knocked someone out cold since he fought Ricky ‘The Hitman’ Hatton in 2009. I remember several years ago Pac haters claiming the reason he was taking out these bigger guys was due to steroids and Alex Ariza mystery shakes. Then they claimed he stopped juicing
because Floyd Mayweather Jr. put him on the spot with his USADA drug testing demands. When Pacquiao rejected those demands the Pacquiao detractors suggested the reason he stopped knocking guys out is due to him being off the juice. What they fail to mention is that he has knocked down 5 of his last 8 world class opponents and had several of them badly hurt in fights. When he fought Chris Algieri he knocked him down several times and the referee should have stopped the fight but let it keep going and Algieri went on his bicycle in survival mode to last the distance. When he fought Jeff Horn in Australia, he hurt him so bad in the 9th round that the referee nearly stopped it. They robbed Pacquiao of a TKO victory in the Horn fight and gave the gift decision to Horn in
they know that Pacquiao has sneaky power. It is very hard to knockout an opponent who is trying to survive and avoid exchanging blows with you. For his size and weight Pacquiao has to be one of the hardest punchers pound for pound. He is hurting men who are much bigger than him in a weight class he doesn’t belong in. Pacquiao’s walk around weight is around 140 pounds and I remember reading an interview with Alex Ariza his old conditioning coach saying the Pacman has to eat a high amount of calories just to make the 147 pound welterweight limit, while his opponents usually cut down in weight 170 one of the worst robberies on nationwide or 180 pounds. LEBRON JAMES SLAMS AAU OVER KIDS ...SCHEDULE TOO DEMANDING
Load management isn’t the toll of the NBA schedule, it’s the toll of youth travel basketball playing 12-15 games a weekend to keep the monthly fees validated! That hurts the players later in life & rookies are entering the NBA hurting! Youth hoops needs less games&more teaching! As the debate over load management in the NBA continues, one of the factors regularly brought up is the increasingly demanding schedule young prospects face on the AAU circuit. Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James has strong feelings on the subject. “These kids are going into the league already banged up, and I think parents and coaches need to know [that]... well, AAU coaches don’t give a f--k,” James, whose sons Bronny and Bryce both play for AAU teams, toldChris Haynes of Yahoo Sports. “AAU coaches couldn’t give a damn about a kid and what his body is going through.” He continued: “It was a few tournaments where my kids—Bronny and Bryce—had five games in one day and that’s just f--king out of control. That’s just too much. And there was a case study where I read a 4 December 1, 2019
report. I don’t know who wrote it not too long ago, and it was talking about the causes and [kid’s] bodies already being broken down and they contributed it to AAU basketball and how many games that these tournaments are having for the [financial benefit]. So, I’m very conscious for my own son because that’s all I can control, and if my son says he’s sore or he’s tired, he’s not playing.” James isn’t the only current or former NBA player or coach to have strong feelings about AAU basketball. www.militarypress.com • news@militarypress.com

SCANDALS Wanger, respected producer, had shot successful agent Jennings Lang, and in a delicate area, no less. Why? Wanger suspected his beautiful wife, actress Joan Bennett, of having an affair with Lang (her agent), and evidently private detectives had confirmed his worst fears. Bennett and Lang had been spotted together too many times for mere coincidence, and the private eyes delivered proof that they were

Denise Richards and Charlie Sheen Denise Richards has found herself in another legal situation with her ex. The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star claims Charlie Sheen owes her almost a half a million dollars in child support. He denies the accusations. “During the time frame since our last stipulation/order in 2016, he has failed to pay $450,000 in support while diverting over $600,000 in assets to adult family members and converting thousands of dollars into cash for his own personal use,” the court documents also state. Back in August of 2018, Charlie filed court documents asking to modify his child support payments to both Denise and ex Brooke Mueller. The actor claimed that his income has “changed significantly” over time making it difficult to sustain child support payments. As a result, Charlie alleged that he no longer has “sufficient income” to pay the court-ordered child support amounts. At the same time, he is “willing and able to provide child support” to the petitioners, but not at the level currently required.

TRANSITIONING: INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY CAREERS CYBERSECURIT Y If you are a transitioning veteran who likes technology, wants to utilize your military skills, and desires a career with great growth opportunities and strong six-figure earning potential, you should consider cybersecurity. Information security is a $122 billion industry today and is expected to grow to $202 billion by 2021. There were an estimated 323,050 job openings posted for the 12 months spanning September 2018 to August 2019. And job prospects will remain strong for the foreseeable future. Employers are eager to find talented professionals who have hands-on skills. They favor former military veterans for cybersecurity positions because of their demonstrated discipline, teamwork and integrity. What if you don’t know the first thing about cybersecurity? I came to the job market with an interest in and an aptitude for technology but without any deep technical skills or knowledge. I was able to ease my transition from military service into a civilian cybersecurity career because I made a solid plan of action. I began a SANS training program (see below) while on permissible leave and secured important industry-
leading GIAC certifications. I was hired two months in advance of my military retirement. Now I am working on my degree to get into the management and director level positions that are so highly coveted. If you are interested by the prospect of a career in cybersecurity, or even Information Technology, here are some firsthand tips for getting started:
FIND YOUR NICHE
Familiarize yourself with the many positions within the cybersecurity field. You can visit the National Institute for Cybersecurity Careers and Studies to learn more about the different career paths. There are also some great books and blogs you can read such as The Network Security Test Lab and Security Weekly.
MAKE A PLAN AND EXPAND YOUR SKILLSET NOW. SET GOALS. Create a plan for training, gaining certifications and advancing in the field. There are technology certification programs as well as many colleges both online and close to home such as the University of Maryland Global Campus and SANS that have a programs for Vets and focus on an Information Technology degree.
Don’t wait until after you’ve retired from active duty. Leverage open source tools to expand your skillset now, including learning how to script. Here are some must-have open source tools: Wireshark, Kali Linux and Python. Additionally, sectools. org has a comprehensive list of tools and helpful information.
FIND A MENTOR.
GET CERTIFIED.
A mentor can help guide your job search quest. Don’t be afraid to use your network of friends and associates to help you meet people working in cybersecurity. Seek out someone who is in a position that you hope to hold one day.
Industry-recognized certifications are absolutely essential to getting your foot in the cybersecurity door. There are many programs to help transitioning veterans enter the workforce. SANS VetSuccess Academy, hands-on, technical training, and GIAC certification program. Graduates in some cases, can secure a job upon graduation.
You deserve a vision plan that focuses on you.
Your service goes above and beyond.
Get the most out of your plan, including:

in search of a more equitable, hopefully unionized shop. His search continued until finally he reached a brothel where the Madame responded, “Why yes sir, this IS a union house.” The man asked, “And if I pay you $100, what cut do the girls get?” “The girls get $80 and the house gets $20.”
Just for Laughs UNIONS A dedicated union worker was attending a convention in Las Vegas and, as you might expect, decided to check out the brothels nearby. When he got to the first one, he asked the Madame, “Is this a union house?” “No,” she replied, “I’m sorry, it isn’t.” “Well, if I pay you $100, what cut do the girls get?” “The house gets $80 and the girls get $20.” Mightily offended at such unfair dealings, the man stomped off down the street
“That’s more like it!” the union man said. He looked around the room and pointed to a stunningly attractive blonde. “I’d like her for the night.”
The American, though momentarily daunted, when he learned the origin of the dish said, “What the hell, I’m on vacation! Bring me an order!” The waiter replied, “I am so sorry, senor. There is only one serving a day since there is only one bull fight each morning. If you come early tomorrow and place your order, we will be sure to serve you this delicacy!”
“I’m sure you would, sir,” said the Madame, then, gesturing to an obese fifty-five year-old woman in the corner, “but Ethel here has seniority.”
The next morning, the American returned, placed his order and was served the one and only special delicacy of the day. After a few bites, and inspecting the contents of his platter, He called to the waiter and said, “These are much, much smaller than the ones I saw you serve yesterday!”
WHAT THE BULL
The waiter promptly replied, “Si senor! Sometimes the bull wins!”
One day, an American was touring Spain. After his day’s sightseeing, he stopped at a local restaurant. While sipping his wine, he noticed a sizzling, scrumptious looking platter being served at the next table. Not only did it look good, the smell was wonderful. He asked the waiter, “What is that you just served?” The waiter replied, “ Ah senor, you have excellent taste! Those are bull testicles from the bull fight this morning. A delicacy!”
ing, I’ll put the money under the pillow. “ Later the next morning, the son found $110 under the pillow. He called Grandpa and said, “I told you each pill was $10, not $110. “I know,” said Grandpa. “The hundred is from Grandma!”
IT’S HARD An old couple is ready to go to sleep. The old man lies on the bed but the old woman lies down on the floor. The old man asks, ‘’Why are you going to sleep on the floor?’’ The old woman says, “Because I want to feel something hard for a change.”
JUST $10 Grandma and Grandpa were visiting their kids overnight . When Grandpa found a bottle of Viagra in his son’s medicine cabinet, he asked about using one of the pills. The son said, “I don’t think you should take one Dad, they’re very strong and very expensive.” “How much?” asked Grandpa. “$10.00 a pill,” answered the son. “I don’t care,” said Grandpa, “I’d still like to try one, and before we leave in the morn-

The SR-71 That 59-year old aircraft, originally developed as an uber-interceptor, still holds the record for fastest sustained supersonic flight at 2,100 miles per hour—much faster than a .50-caliber bullet. But the new plane just announced, the SR-72, will fly twice as fast—so fast that at top speed the very air entering its engines will be moving as fast as an SR-71. Keeping combustion and thrust going under such conditions has been likened to lighting a cigar in a hurricane. The SR-72’s planned ability to go from a standing start to Mach 6 and back again is a hat trick no one has been able to pull off. Yet, an SR-72 demonstrator reportedly first appeared in plain view in California in July 2017. According to Aviation Week, Skunk Works has

PUZZLES ACROSS
The new SR-72 developed a way to run turbojet engines at high temperatures and power levels, high enough to push the SR-72 to Mach 2.5. The ramjet-scramjet second stage requires speeds above Mach 3 or 3.5 to operate, a “thrust chasm” which Lockheed Martin says it’s solved … though it won’t say how. Turbojet? Ramjet? Scramjet? A turbojet spins many blades to compress and heat incoming air before setting it on fire and riding the resulting plume of hot expanding gas. A ramjet moves so fast that the air entering the engine is already hot and compressed enough to ignite the fuel. A scramjet—short for “supersonic combustion ramjet”—is just that, a ramjet where the incoming air is moving at supersonic speeds. At hypersonic speeds there’s no additional sonic boom, but the air piles up so fast along the aircraft’s leading edges that they reach blast-furnace temperatures. The SR-71 heated up so much due to the friction of its flight that its body panels fit together loosely on the ground and expanded snugly in flight.
