MILKEN COMMUNITY SCHOOLS
WELCOME DR. SARAH SHULKIND
As I prepared to become Milken’s Head of School, I had the joy and privilege of spending two full days shadowing 12th grader, Elijah Dardashty, and 8th grader, Siena Kossoff. These days at Milken Community Schools brimmed with extraordinary moments where I tangibly felt the power of your generosity. Whether marveling at our middle schoolers emulating street artists in Tel Aviv, or witnessing the collaboration between our mathematicians and Deborah Orlik in the Guerin Center for Advanced Sciences, or tearing up as Kol Echad students rehearsed the traditional “Uf Guzal” for graduation alongside teacher and Milken alumna Sarah (Vanderhal) Shapiro ’02, or even stopping at the brand new Milken Mart to grab a snack, I was reminded everywhere of the inspirational learning your gifts made possible. Giving, whether to the Annual Fund for the here and now, or to capital projects or the endowment for the immediate and distant future, is a vital demonstration of how much Milken Community Schools means to your family. Albert Einstein famously reflected, "Many times a day, I realize how much my own outer and inner life is built upon the labors of my fellow[s], both living and dead, and how earnestly I must exert myself in order to give in return as much as I have received and am still receiving." It is your ongoing contributions to Milken that set an example of commitment and generosity for our children, provide an exceptional Jewish education to over 700 students, and help us build an endowment that will educate future generations. Your gifts to Milken Community Schools keep on giving, for what our children receive from this community, they undoubtedly will give back in return. Thank you for all you have given to build our School. As Rabbi Jonathan Sacks wisely said, "The world our children will inherit is born in the schools we build today." Together, we will continue to grow Milken for our children and for the Jewish future they will create. Warmly, DR. SARAH SHULKIND Head of School

LETTER FROM
LISE APPLEBAUM I am honored and humbled to serve as the Chair of the Milken Community Schools Board of Trustees. I am surrounded by an astounding community of leaders, including our school’s administration, faculty, staff, lay leaders, parents and students. Each of these stakeholder groups join together for a special cause — engaging our community to build a strong foundation for our students to become the next generation of leaders, philanthropists, changemakers and advocates for Israel. It all starts on campus with both compelling classroom and experiential learning, and continues on when our students go out into the world to lead on college campuses, and as successful alumni in the greater community. Their work echoes the values they learned at Milken and we can all be proud of the young Jewish leaders our school produces. This year, we welcome our new Head of School, Dr. Sarah Shulkind, into our already thriving community. I am eager to partner with her as she leads Milken Community Schools to even greater heights. Her passion, experience, love of teaching and learning, and humanity will propel us into the future as a leading educational institution. I hope you will join me in looking back at what we have accomplished and looking to the future for what is yet to come. B’shalom,
L I S E A P P L E B AU M Chair, Board of Trustees

POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY In his book, Big Potential, Harvard-trained psychologist Shawn Achor tells us why fireflies are 79% more successful at attracting a mate when they “flash” in synch with one another, rather than in isolation or in competition with one another. He calls this “big potential,” a phrase that speaks to the capabilities of communities and systems that are in sync and helping one another flourish. In effect, this is biological and behavioral support for ethics of the father’s 1:14 “if I am not for myself, who will be for me, if I am only for myself, what am I?” Our Milken community moved in a direction toward that “big potential” during the 2018-19 school year. Hundreds of members of our community chose to further their learning, to do so together, in ways that could better their own lives along with the lives of their families and their communities. All-in-all, the numbers send a clear message about how Dr. Nick Holton our Milken community prioritizes personal and collective Positive Education Chair flourishing. Through three years of offering Positive Psychology at the upper school, nearly one-third of all Milken upper school students have elected to take the course and more than 75% of the student body has participated in some form of Positive Psychology programming. In 2018-19, though, Milken continued to put an emphasis on providing opportunities for the adult members of our community to learn alongside our students. The highlights of these experiences include the very popular Lidrosh parent education program, led by Director of Counseling, Whitney Fisch, Milken’s first ever night courses in Positive Psychology, attendance at the World Positive Education Conference by 12 Milken administrators, a special alumni parent introduction to Positive Psychology, and professional development sessions for faculty in Positive Psychology, and recognizing anxiety and depression again led by Milken’s counseling department. In total, over 700 Milken parents, Board members, faculty and staff took part in one or more educational events centered around personal and community thriving this year. It is our hope that the many, diverse individuals that make up this community better understand how to help themselves thrive individually and in turn, how to help our community to thrive collectively.

ALUMNI
YEAR IN REVIEW The 2018-19 year brought renewed strength as well as exciting transition to the alumni and alumni parent communities. We held our annual Alumni Thanksgiving Luncheon and Alumni vs. Boys Varsity Basketball Game and celebrated the Class of 2009 with a lively ten-year reunion brunch. The hardworking and loyal alumni board reimagined its role and has added several new members for the 2019-20 year who will enhance connections throughout the community. We also hosted an enriching alumni parent event, which brought parents of alumni back together for a panel discussion with alumni and current students, moderated by our Positive Education Chair, Dr. Nick Holton. The stewardship of our alumni and alumni parents is a demonstration of our school’s mission and it is essential that our students and alumni maintain connections to one another. We are immensely grateful to the alumni and alumni parent leaders and volunteers who have partnered with us over the past year to strengthen the ties among Milken students, faculty, alumni and alumni families. We look forward to building upon the progress of the past year to continue bringing our community closer together.

VISION
BEIT MIDRASH FELLOWSHIP Following the destruction of the Second Temple, in a time of enormous uncertainty, divisiveness, and change, a small group of Jewish dreamers, inspired by rigorous learning, spiritual seeking, and ethical responsibility, set out to cultivate a vibrant model community deeply rooted in tradition and courageously innovative. They chose to live in fellowship within a broader, more diverse Jewish community. Taking on deeper commitments and challenging one another to live according to sacred values, they created a path for refining the soul, renewing the Jewish people, and repairing the world.
HOW
In this spirit, the Beit Midrash Fellowship is a grades 9-12 program (there is a pre-Beit Midrash course in Grade 8), based on intensive study of Jewish texts, service learning and leadership, community building and celebration. Guided by Beit Midrash Fellowship faculty, students develop leadership skills in order to fashion a joyous student-led fellowship. In class, they develop higher level skills for independent learning of classical Jewish texts and their commentaries. Studying Jewish texts in chevruta (partnership) enables our students to practice the vital skills of listening closely to the texts and to each other’s interpretations. Careful listening and close attention to detail prepares our students for a complex world that requires nuanced critical thinking and recognition of multiple viewpoints. In areas such as homelessness, hunger, the environment, visiting the sick, or supporting the elderly, students integrate their Jewish learning with community service, reflection, and handson projects which impact the needs of their city and enrich the larger Milken community. In the upper grades, Beit Midrash Fellowship fellows develop highly relevant, creative, textbased projects in social, political, and personal areas such as ethics of science and technology, social justice, identity and community. One of the goals of the Beit Midrash Fellowship is to create and contribute beyond the bounds of the fellowship. In addition to creating social action leadership and Shabbatonim available to students outside of the Fellowship, Beit Midrash fellows have successfully launched a Global Beit Midrash program, designed to inspire young Jews throughout the world to connect, collaborate, and create through the pathways of story, texts, culture, and social action.

LETTER FROM
MICHELE ROSENFELD While the 2018-19 school year was full and memorable in many ways, I can’t help but reflect on my last four years as President of the Milken Parents Association. As my husband Scott and I watched our two children, Jake ’17 and Lindsey ’20 find their strengths and passions, we have been so blessed by the treasured friendships and community experiences that we cultivated within the MPA. I am proud of the work we have done together over the years, building community, supporting our incredible teachers and staff, and making lifelong connections. The job of a parent volunteer can take many forms, all of which are equally valuable and crucial to keeping our community strong and connected. You may host a Shabbat dinner, drive a weekly carpool, cook a meal for a family experiencing hardship, serve breakfast or lunch in the Milken Mart, scout locations for Senior Mystery Night, invite new parents to school events, and so much more. Participation in the MPA is the gift that keeps on giving, and for this I am eternally grateful.

JACKLYN ROME ’04 Jacklyn Rome ’04 cultivated her passion for entrepreneurship early on and she continues to apply the business principles she learned at Milken and in college in her professional life. Jacklyn graduated from Boston University with honors in 2007 and went on to earn a Master’s degree in Finance from ESADE Business School in Barcelona in 2010. After college, Jacklyn joined a start-up consulting firm, Growthink, and then made Aliyah and moved to Tel Aviv, where she worked in strategic consulting at Ernst & Young. Jacklyn credits much of her passion for Israel and desire to live in Tel Aviv to the time she spent at Milken and the values taught in the classroom, particularly through the songs and history taught in Hebrew classes. After returning from Israel, she spent time in venture capital in New York City, as the Head of US Operations for one of Israel’s most active venture capital funds. In 2015, Jacklyn worked for Uber, where she led competitive strategy for Uber's most competitive market and launched ExpressPOOL. Following her time at Uber, Jacklyn served as Senior Director of New Business Channels for Blue Apron, a recipe and ingredient delivery service, where she launched a new on-demand delivery channel enabling customers to order and receive their meals within an hour. Evaluating entrepreneurial success requires a solid foundation of business fundamentals as well as the creativity to adapt to changing markets and consumer habits. Jacklyn’s work with entrepreneurs and high-growth startups has given her a valuable understanding of what she calls “the entrepreneurial ecosystem.” With the ability to quickly but thoughtfully assess the needs and opportunities of just about any business structure, Jacklyn will continue to make an impact on today’s most influential companies.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
GAVIN SCHUTZER ’24 When Gavin Schutzer started at Milken in 7th grade, he was excited about meeting new students, the possibility of discovering new ways to express his creative spirit, and being in a new community with endless possibilities. While Gavin was a bit nervous about joining a new school, he felt like Milken was a second home from the first campus tour, and the Camp Milken overnight trip was the perfect way for him for start new friendships before the first day of school. Another impactful part of his 7th grade year was the Advisory program, where students are assigned to small groups led by a faculty member. Throughout the school year, these advisory groups meet on a regular basis and move through an enriching curriculum on various topics together but are also given the opportunity to form bonds organically and within the safe space of a small group. Gavin bonded quickly with his advisory group, led by faculty members James Silver and Olivia Dunker. Gavin engaged with his advisory group to establish good study habits, discuss international current events, and to celebrate his peers as they all learned to survive and thrive in 7th grade. Gavin's love of learning and creativity have been ignited by Milken's performing arts department, where Gavin has participated in numerous theatrical and musical performances. He played the role of Eric in The Little Mermaid and performed and competed as a member of Kol Echad, Milken's award-winning choral group. The faculty in the performing arts department has encouraged and challenged Gavin to try new things and to express his creativity in his performances. He was recognized for his achievements and hard work with the award for “All Around Dedicated Performer” for the 2018-2019 school year. In 8th grade and beyond, Gavin looks forward to taking a leadership role in the performing arts department and to diving deeper into the arts.

Louis notes, “I was extremely shy when I was younger and having a non-judgmental environment was instrumental in helping me build a base of confidence to communicate effectively with others.” This supportive environment paired with the strong work ethic instilled in all of our graduates has helped him reach many of his goals. Louis is now a highly sought-after real estate agent with Aaron Kirman Partners in Los Angeles, a group with over $6 billion in sales to date. Louis represents clients and listings in the San Fernando Valley, Beverly Hills, Santa Barbara, Montecito and beyond. He has sold property all over California’s robust real estate market, with his largest listing reaching $56 million. Louis also offers lifestyle concierge and private aviation charter services to attract and retain some of the most selective clientele in Los Angeles. Louis has been involved with philanthropy and volunteer work for many years, and enjoys “giving back to the community and helping others that may not have the ability to help themselves.” He co-founded The Kirman Foundation, a philanthropic organization of the Aaron Kirman Partners real estate team, which partners with local organizations to serve the homeless, help animal rescue centers, provide disaster relief, and more. Louis is also a mentor with Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles and is working with AGWC Rockin’ Rescues in Woodland Hills, where he supports the organization’s animal rescue education and outreach efforts. Louis recently completed the competitive and rigorous Community Leadership Institute through the Jewish Federation, a 15-month program focused on developing leadership skills and becoming a more effective member of the philanthropic community. Louis participated in group programming as well as one-on-one mentorship experiences that taught him how to be a more impactful member of a non-profit board and how to make the most of his passion for volunteer work.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
LIANA PAKRAVAN ’21 Liana Pakravan embarked on Milken’s prestigious Tiferet Israel Fellowship during her second semester of 10th grade, an experience that creates lifelong bonds and treasured memories for all who participate in this unique and immersive program. The experience of living and studying abroad strengthened Liana’s love and appreciation for Israel, as well as deepened her strong connection to Judaism. One of her most memorable days during the Tiferet Fellowship was Yom Ha'atzmaut, where she recalls, “we were dancing and singing at the Kotel with hundreds of other Jews, [and] I felt a sense of belonging and connection to everyone around me because we all shared the same love for Israel.” The experience not only instilled a renewed sense of pride in her Jewish heritage, but also encouraged Liana to support the state of Israel and think of it as her second home. Liana is on the JV volleyball team, where she enjoys working together with her teammates and coaches to learn new skills and overcome challenges as a group. Liana notes that being a Milken student has “taught me the importance of being part of a community and to constantly give back.” She is a leader in various groups and clubs at Milken, including Student Ambassadors, Sketch Comedy Club, and YOZMA, Milken’s community service program. This past year Liana’s community service cohort hosted a fundraiser for Friends of the IDF, an organization which provides support for Israeli soldiers, veterans, and families of fallen soldiers. Liana enjoys singing during her free time and spending time with her friends and family.
