2017-18 ANNUAL REPORT
welcome from
DR. ROBERT WEXLER
01
The former chief rabbi of Great Britain, Rabbi Jonathan Sacks was reported to have said, “I don’t need you to agree with me, I need you to care about me!” This sentiment has particular meaning these days when our Jewish community seems to be so polarized with often angry divisions between the religious and secular and the political left and right. How can we speak to one another, and how do we function as a community when such differences prevail? Here at the Milken Community Schools, we welcome Jewish students from a variety of backgrounds. Some of our students are fourth and fifth generation Americans while others are from families who came to the United States much more recently. And some of our students come from families who are relatively new to Judaism altogether. Yet despite their varied backgrounds, we work hard to forge our students into one single, caring community—the Milken community. We support a diversity of opinions among our students, and we validate these differences while teaching them to appreciate the many factors that bind us together as Jews and as Americans. This annual report is full of important information about our Milken community—facts and figures about our students and about our institution. But the most important fact is that we function as a community of students and faculty who may not always agree with one another, but who still manage to show each other that we care. Thank you for being a part of our larger Milken community, and we hope you will continue to support this important institution in the future. My best,
D R . RO B E RT W E X L E R Interim Head of School

RICHARD SANDLER As my term as Chairman of the Board comes to an end, I cannot help but appreciate what a privilege it has been for me to work with such a talented group of educators, lay leaders and students who certainly have and will continue to do us proud. Any private school can only be successful with the support of the families we serve. Together we have the awesome responsibility of preparing students to compete on an international stage in a very complex and rapidly changing world while at the same time representing the best of our tradition and values. We can only fulfill that responsibility by making sure our educators and students have the proper resources. I want to thank you all for supporting the important work we do. Very truly yours,

LISE APPLEBAUM
After serving as Treasurer for the past two of my three years on the Board, I am now honored to lead this dedicated group as Chair of the Board of Trustees. The Board plays an essential role in stewarding the growth of the school, dedicating both expertise and resources for the purpose of advancing Milken’s mission. I look forward to building upon the important work and legacy of my colleague and friend, Mr. Richard Sandler, as well as past board chairs, and working in partnership with the administration to address the current needs of the institution. My husband, Robert, and I are proud parents of three Milken alumni: Noah ’12, Kaile ’16 and Jared ’18 and it is my honor to continue giving back to the community that has given so much to our family. I look forward to using my term to help shape the next generation of Jewish leaders. Yours sincerely,

We are deeply grateful to all who have served Milken as Trustees and we would like to acknowledge the two Trustees who are leaving the Board this year. Both served on Milken’s Board at a critical time in the school’s history and made an immeasurable contribution in the school’s evolution. We look forward to their ongoing involvement in the life of the school and thank them for their years of service.
TODD KATZ We are deeply indebted to Todd Katz for his counsel and leadership during his six years as a Trustee and a member of the Building and Grounds Committee. As co-founder of Century Park Partners, LLC, a real estate investment firm, Todd helped lead the planning and construction of the Guerin Family Institute for Advanced Sciences, which opened in 2016. Todd’s children, Hailey ’13 and Sean ’16, graduated from Milken and went on to attend UCLA and Loyola Marymount University, respectively. A generous and dedicated supporter of the school’s mission, Todd remains a resource to the Board and the student and alumni communities.
JULIE WEIL Julie served nine years as a member of the Milken Board of Trustees, the last six as a member of the Executive Board and as the Board’s Secretary. She played an important role in helping with the school’s transition from being a part of Stephen S. Wise Temple to a fully independent institution. Julie also chaired the Israel/Judaica Committee and was a member of the Nominating Committee and the Building and Grounds Committee. Two of Julie’s children graduated from Milken and remain active in the alumni network: Alex ’14, a recent graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, and Kaley ’16, a junior at Northwestern University. Julie and her husband Peter have been very generous with their time and resources as active volunteers and fundraisers on behalf of Milken. Julie intends to continue her involvement with the school, helping to establish a Milken alumni parent network, which will include fundraising and community-building initiatives.

TONY LAWRENCE Milken Government and History teacher from 2001-2017
One cannot overstate the way Tony’s humorous and kind-hearted spirit impacted the Milken community during his 16-year tenure as an educator, advisor, and treasured friend to students and faculty. After Tony’s passing, the community came together to celebrate his legacy and support one another during a special Town Meeting Memorial Celebration, attended by current and former faculty, students, and alumni. Tony’s family and friends made a wonderful tribute gift in his honor to install a beautiful and serene fountain in the Zen Garden on the Upper School campus. We are all truly blessed to have known and worked with Tony and he will forever be remembered.

13 COMMITMENT TO JEWISH IDENTITY AND SERVICE Maya Aharon ‘04 earned a bachelor’s degree in Jewish Studies from Indiana University in 2008 and went on to teach classes on the Holocaust and Israel Studies at a religious school in the South Bay. In 2009, Maya began staffing the Builders of Jewish Education’s March of the Living, a program in which Milken seniors participate annually. Students in the program travel on a deeply meaningful journey through Poland and Israel, centered around Yom Hashoah and Yom Ha’atzmaut. Maya participated in the BJE March of the Living as a Milken senior in 2004 and noted that the experience “ignited my passion for Holocaust education and became the foundation of my career.” Maya is now Director of March of the Living and works to instill Jewish ethics and values in all of her professional and personal endeavors. Maya has been actively involved with Camp Ramah for many years, originally as a camper, then working as a counselor, a staffer for the Ramah Israel and Poland Seminar, and later head of a division for three years. She currently runs a training seminar for new Rashei Edah, senior staff and division heads, at Camp Ramah where she helps them become acquainted with the organization and grow into their leadership roles. Maya will be honored for her many contributions to Camp Ramah with the Alumni Leadership Award later this year. MILKEN COMMUNITY SCHOOLS
14 BREAKING TECH NEWS As a sophomore at Milken, Mark Gurman ’12 was already breaking ground in the tech journalism world by hunting down a scoop, the old-fashioned way, and by revealing the news about well concealed Apple secrets such as Siri, the Macbook Retina display, and new releases of the iPad and iPhone. Mark’s work in high school on breaking Apple news stories for the authoritative blog 9to5Mac earned him a position as senior editor there, where he reported on some of the most prolific developments in the Apple sphere. While at 9to5Mac, Mark was named one of Time Magazine’s 25 Best Bloggers of 2013, one of Wired Magazine’s 16 People to Know in Tech in 2013, and one of Forbes’ 30 Under 30 in 2015. Mark commented, “the combination of writing, economic, and scientific research classes at Milken helped reinforce my interest in the technology world and helped push me into this field.” Shortly after graduating from the University of Michigan in 2016, Mark made the leap from 9to5Mac to join Bloomberg’s Global Technology Team to cover consumer product news from all of the biggest players in tech, including Apple. In 2017, Bloomberg launched a web series entitled “Gadgets With Gurman” in which Mark reports on weekly product news and reviews the latest tech products. The company plans to expand this content to Bloomberg TV in the future. 2017-18 ANNUAL REPORT

Maya Robin ’20 was selected this past year as a Diller Teen Fellow, joining an impressive group of student leaders from six continents. The international fellowship is an immersive twelve month program for young Jewish leaders to develop a commitment to hands-on Tikkun Olam, building a connection to the Jewish people and Israel and deepening Jewish identity. Fellows participate in monthly workshops and weekend retreats, and have the opportunity to host a Diller fellow from Tel Aviv before spending time in Israel with the cohort. Maya, who embarked on Milken’s signature Tiferet Fellowship program in Israel during her tenth grade year, said she was motivated to apply for the Diller Fellowship to strengthen her connection to Israel through education and advocacy. Maya looks forward to this tremendous opportunity and noted that she is “honored to be selected as a Diller fellow and cannot wait to establish connections with other fellows from around the world.”

March 18, 2018 Milken hosted its first community fundraising gala this year and it was an unforgettable evening thanks to our dedicated parent volunteers, honorary host committee, generous auction donors and event sponsors. MICHELE ROSENFELD The Milken Parent Association (MPA) is a thriving community of parents who work in partnership with the faculty and administration and are respected and appreciated for their contributions. Our goal is to bring the community together through activities and volunteer opportunities, big and small, enriching the social, cultural and fundraising efforts of the school. We want to thank all the members of the MPA, especially the Executive Board, who worked tirelessly this past year, fostering a connection with one another and enriching the lives of our children every day. The MPA worked on two exciting new events during the 2017-2018 school year. At the Challah Bake in October, over 300 people celebrated the joy of making challah together. In March, we welcomed over 400 guests at The Event, and successfully raised $255,000 in support of the school. Thank you to each of the MPA volunteers who chaired grade-level socials, gave campus tours to new and prospective families, hosted faculty and staff appreciation events, and volunteered in the Milken Marts to keep the students nourished all year long. No matter how or how much our parents participate in the MPA, they each make a valuable impact on the strength of our school. I am excited for what the future holds and proud and honored to lead this group of exceptional parents, as together we continue to build a strong and vibrant Milken community. Sincerely,
MICHELE ROSENFELD, MPA President (Jake ’17 and Lindsey ’20) 2017-18 ANNUAL REPORT

ALUMNI YEAR IN REVIEW The 2017-2018 year was full of new and exciting initiatives in the Milken alumni community! We held our first all-alumni Poolside Mixer at the W Hotel, the Annual Thanksgiving Luncheon and Alumni Basketball Game, an intimate Shabbat Dinner celebration during Hanukkah, and an incredible ten year reunion for the Class of 2008. We reconnected with and celebrated alumni across the globe who are forging their paths in medicine, civil service, education, the arts, entertainment, real estate, fashion, tech and more. We also launched our first matching gift campaign, $18,000 in 18 Days, inspired by the philanthropic leadership of Sean Rad ’04, whose gift helped us raise $25,809 in support of Milken and its highly impactful programming. Our alumni are proud to belong to this community of talented, generous, and worldly individuals who demonstrate the values of Judaism in their unique and meaningful ways. I feel truly blessed to collaborate with our dedicated Alumni Board leaders and event volunteers in their vital efforts to connect the vast alumni community. I extend my sincerest thanks to our 2017-2018 Alumni Board: Leore (Haver) Ben-David ’05, Talia (Bender) Small ’10, Leon Hason ’05 and Nesim Hason ’07, as well as to our Co-Chairs of the Class of 2008 Reunion event, Danna Bornstein ’08 and Desiree Pakravan ’08. Numerous alumni also volunteered at on-campus events such as the Admission Open House and Gesher Week to represent their invaluable Milken alumni perspectives. The quality and reach of our alumni events, communications, and fundraising efforts would not be nearly as strong without these committed leaders and volunteers. We are deeply grateful for their ongoing partnership with the school. With gratitude, JULIE WHITMER Associate Director of Annual Fund & Alumni Relations
