Our Cover Artist Janice Brock A master of colour and form, Janice Sylvia Brock has gained international acclaim, and her paintings are keenly sought after by discerning collectors worldwide. Her work has been likened to that of Matisse and Chagall, though the vibrant hues and the sense of movement are uniquely Brock. At ‘Brocklands’, her studio gallery overlooking the ocean in St. James, much of her recent work is on display, as well as prints of selected paintings, in over 500 square feet of exhibition space. History in a Nutshell 8

World Heritage Site Nomination Barbados’ historic capital city, Bridgetown, which had its 382nd anniversary in 2010, and the historic Garrison area have been nominated for inscription on the World Heritage list. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Barbados was established as the nucleus of Trans-Atlantic trade and served as headquarters of both the British Royal Navy and Army. Bridgetown is home to the third oldest Parliament in the Commonwealth; a statue of Lord Nelson which pre-dates its counterpart in London’s Trafalgar Square by some 30 years; and the 350-year-old Jewish Synagogue, the oldest to be found anywhere in the entire western hemisphere. Interestingly, Barbados is the only place that George Washington ever visited outside the United States. Originally inhabited by Amerindians before being settled by the English in 1627, Barbados is the only Caribbean island which remained constantly under British rule until 1966 when she gained independence. It is no wonder the island is affectionately known as “Little England”. Over the course of the last four centuries, historical events and a potent mix of African, British and other influences have bequeathed a rich and diverse cultural heritage. Bearing testament to this are the thirteen wonderful museums and two plantation houses that exist in this small island: The Barbados Museum, Nidhe Israel Synagogue and Museum, Arlington Museum, Legends Cricket Museum, Barbados Concorde Experience, George Washington House and Museum, Museum of Parliament and National Heroes Gallery, Folk Museum at Foursquare Rum Factory and Heritage Park, Folkstone Underwater Museum, Mallalieu Motor Museum, Springvale EcoHeritage Museum, St. Nicholas Abbey and Sunbury House. Any visitor motivated enough to delve into Barbados’ past will be richly rewarded.

RUM SHOPS - There are

12

currently 1600 rum shops in Barbados. These owner-run corner stores and bars rolled into one, provide the surrounding community with a spot for social intercourse and imbibement while supplying imported staples, often on “trust”. Today many offer tasty hot meals at unbeatable prices. RUM - With a starting point over 350 years ago, Barbados was the first place in the world to distill rum. Early connoisseurs included George Washington, who insisted on a barrel of Barbados rum at his inauguration. Today Barbados produces many fine brands of rum. SUGAR - For over 350 years, a unique golden crystal sugar has been the main export of Barbados. As a result there is a rich heritage of first class products made with sugar such as marmalades, chutneys, jellies and unique Bajan sweets. PEPPER SAUCE - Bajan pepper sauce is a traditional concoction made with locally grown scotch bonnet peppers. The yellow colour is derived mainly from tumeric root. Each recipe varies but may include onion, garlic, ginger root, horseradish root, shallots, white rum, mustard, vinegar and salt. It’s delicious with cheese and biscuits or in a Bajan salt bread with ham.

Brazilian Gem Designs Different by Design Brazilian Gem Designs, now celebrating fourteen years at the Colony Club Hotel on Barbados’ west coast, is the brainchild of John Beale and his Brazilian wife Leila, who is a member of the renowned Gemological Institute of America (GIA). John and Leila’s jewellery background began over 25 years ago in Rio de Janeiro through a close relationship with the De Castro Family, owners of the traditional Brazilian company Gregory & Sheehan. Gregory & Sheehan was formed over 75 years ago by former managers of Cartier and Mappin & Webb. They were selected by the Brazilian Government for presenting a gift of special aquamarine jewellery to Queen Elizabeth at her coronation in 1952. John and Leila extended their Brazilian links in 1997 through an association with Hans Stern, known as the Lord of Gemstones and the founder of Brazil’s most famous jewellery company, H. STERN. They were appointed the first agent in the world for H.STERN. Unlike many jewellery outlets, most of Brazilian Gem Designs’ output is 18 karat and handmade. They also assist clients with designs and make pieces especially for them. Leila Beale says “Brazilian Gem Designs is art, where the gems are selected and romanced, as opposed to impersonal mass production of repetitive jewellery made from castings”. She believes that “a piece of jewellery should be something special and lasting”. Leila says that her shop really caters to a niche market and to those people who want a shopping experience in pleasant surroundings where they can satisfy their dreams, emotions and romantic feelings. She is pleased to hear clients say that they first visited Brazilian Gems for its reputation, but the reason for them returning is due to value.

Art & Craft An open air craft stall at Bathsheba on the east coast

Art & Craft Art in Barbados has evolved tremendously in recent years, and Caribbean art on the whole is receiving unprecedented international attention. This is evident in the number of art galleries which have sprung up across Barbados in the past few years. The island’s ‘gentler side’ provides a cultural haven among the action-packed activities on offer. So steal away for a day and explore some of the outstanding galleries to be found around the island. During the past decade or so more and more craftspeople have come to the fore, releasing talent that had previously remained dormant. The result of this upsurge of artistic ability is a wide variety of beautiful local craftwork, mainly created out of the island’s most readily available natural resources such as clay, wood, weaving materials, shells and leather. Batik and needlework are also prominent local skills. Whilst some treasures are sought, others are chanced upon, so on your travels around Barbados take the opportunity to visit some of our lovely craft studios and shops. Chances are they will be delighted to show you their work and perhaps you’ll find a unique treasure to take home as a reminder of a special holiday on our ‘island in the sun’.

“Shell Seeker” - oil on canvas by Janice Sylvia Brock

Janice Sylvia Brock A master of colour and form, Janice Sylvia Brock has gained international acclaim, and her paintings are keenly sought after by discerning collectors worldwide. Her work has been likened to that of Matisse and Chagall, though the vibrant hues and the sense of movement are uniquely Brock. She will approach a new canvas without the aid of sketches, photographs or preliminary outlines. From the first touch of colour laid onto the virgin canvas her brush strokes are utterly confident, and this is evident in the result: works which resonate with life, sensuality, and occasionally humour. At ‘Brocklands’, her studio gallery overlooking the ocean in St. James, much of her recent work is on display, as well as prints of selected paintings, in over 500 square feet of exhibition space. You can also see work in progress and chat with Janice about her art.

Island Adventures Barbados has a well-earned reputation of being an immensely satisfying holiday destination, going far beyond the usual prerequisites of a tropical beach holiday. We encourage visitors to “scratch the surface” and discover the refreshing mix that lies beneath. Whether it’s serenity or excitement you seek, Barbados offers an unbeatable range of holiday activities and sightseeing trips to fill your days. The dazzling waters of the Caribbean Sea, along with the gentle southeasterly trade winds, have been beckoning sailors to these shores for centuries. With over 70 miles of pollution free coastline and the warm, azure waters of the Caribbean, Barbados offers excellent conditions for sailing and a huge fleet of vessels from which to choose – from the sleek, luxurious mega-catamarans and “party boats”, to the smaller, more intimate, “take-it-easy” sailing cruises. The boats are all well maintained with fully trained captains and crew who all seem to have that wonderful Bajan spirit with warm and friendly attitudes.

A. Western/From the book, “Barbados – A Coral Paradise”

Diving

Barbados has long been known for its white sandy beaches, crystal clear blue waters, friendly smiles and, of course, rum! What many people are unaware of is the spectacular beauty that lies beneath the surface of the sea. The island has been blessed with miles of coral reefs teeming with an incredible variety of sea life, excellent visibility and an abundance of fascinating ship wrecks. Most of the diving activity in Barbados takes place on the west and south coasts which are sheltered from the turbulent Atlantic Ocean and the easterly trade winds. From Maycocks Bay on the north-west coast to the South Winds Fringe in the south-west, there are few greater delights than gliding through these warm, sheltered waters and being privy to the silent underwater world of a coral garden and its inhabitants.

Sales, quality service and repairs. DIVE & SNORKEL EQUIPMENT, dive lights, underwater cameras. TAX FREE SHOPPING for Visitors, (airline ticket & passport required) Over 50 years combined experience, father & son team.

Sightseeing 88

Sightseeing Barbados’ gently rolling landscape and magnificent scenery make the island a real treat to explore. Hiring a car is an excellent idea as this allows you to travel around at your own pace. You will find the foldout Digicel Road Map which is provided with this publication very useful for selecting and finding the major attractions.

Touring the West and North of the Island Holetown, in the parish of St. James, is the site where John Powell landed in 1625 to claim Barbados in the name of England’s King James. Nowadays it is a busy area of hotels, exquisite restaurants, trendy bars and irresistible shops. The main shopping area lies between Sunset Mall and the exquisite, new Limegrove Complex. Just north of Holetown is the Folkestone Marine Museum & Visitor’s Centre, an underwater park and sanctuary providing the perfect fun-filled day for young visitors, including the opportunity to snorkel at the Marine Reserve (snorkeling equipment available for rent at the visitor’s centre). Continuing north into St. Peter, make a stop at The Shell Gallery, just off Highway 1 in the Gibbes area. They have an abundance of shells from around the world and many other shell related gift items for the shell enthusiast. A short distance along the coast is Mullins Bay – an ideal spot for a swim and a bite to eat at Mullins Beach Bar & Restaurant. As you head further north you’ll come to Speightstown, once a fort and thriving port, today it is more a fishing port and commercial centre though much of the 19th century architecture and charm still remains. Be sure to visit Arlington House Museum which gives an interesting glimpse into the history of Speightstown. The Gallery of Caribbean Art, housed in the Northern Business Centre, is also a worthwhile stop for all art lovers. It features a wonderful collection of works from Barbados, Jamaica, Haiti, Trinidad and the rest of the region. As you continue north along the coast, past the exclusive Port St. Charles Marina, you’ll go through the quaint little fishing village known as Six Men’s which has produced some of the island’s most skilled boat builders. Interestingly, during the 19th century, whalers set sail from this area – today, fishermen still bring their fresh catches

The Animal Flower Cave, located on the rugged cliff tops at the northernmost point of the island, is a large sea cave with several huge chambers filled with pools, unusual rock formations and a few sea anemones. An informal café serves cold drinks and sandwiches and there are guides who will walk you through the cave. Barbados Wildlife The Reserve is set amidst a lush Mahogany grove where you can mingle with free roaming monkeys, turtles, deer, otters, mongoose and many others. There is also an exotic orchid collection, walk-in bird aviary and iguana sanctuary. Just next door, Grenade Hall Forest & Signal Station houses many interesting artefacts, including pre-Colombian tools unearthed during its restoration. The forest has over 2 km of trails winding through many species of trees and plant life – intriguing, informative and educational.

Central & Eastern Barbados The north-eastern parish of St. Andrew is known for its dramatic landscapes and unusual rock formations. The early Scottish settlers thought that the area was much like their native Scotland and named the region The Scotland District. From here, it’s downhill all the way to the invigorating east coast. In the area of Belleplaine, look out for Sand Dunes, a friendly, casual roadside bar and restaurant run by Curtis Hall – they serve ice cold drinks and the tastiest fresh grilled fish. Further along the Ermy Bourne Highway is Cattlewash, with its wild and stunning Atlantic seascape equalled by the spectacular clay escarpment of Chalky Mount, rising up dramatically inland. The quaint village of Bathsheba is just over the hill in the next bay. In the middle of the bay is Soup Bowl – the most popular surf spot on the island.

The Animal Flower Cave

Another truly fascinating stop in the north is St. Nicholas Abbey, thought to be one of only three remaining Jacobean houses in the western hemisphere, and probably the oldest original building on the island.

A wonder of Barbados not to be missed. Located in the parish of St. Lucy, at the most northerly tip of the island, the coastal scenery here is spectacular. The cave originally got its name from the sea anemones found in its many rock pools. Steps lead down into the cave through an opening in the cliff. Here, the view from the naturally formed “windows” out to the sea and the pounding surf are simply awesome, so don’t forget your camera. The Pirates Tavern located on the cliff top, serves delicious fresh Bajan Salt Bread cutters (sandwiches), delicious wraps and a good variety of cold drinks. Open daily 9am–5pm. There is an admission fee.

Barbados has some amazing gardens which are open to the public and Andromeda Gardens is no exception. Positioned in the hills above Bathsheba, these gardens encompass some six and a half acres, with lush tropical foliage and cascading colours. It is considered one of the finest botanical gardens in the Caribbean. Follow the signs to Hunte’s Gardens in the lush hills of St. Joseph – a real treat for all garden enthusiasts. Legendary horticulturalist, Anthony Hunte has lovingly landscaped an arena-sized natural sink hole into what can only be described as a stunning tropical garden! St. George and St. Thomas are the only two island parishes not bordered by the sea. Between them, they feature quite a number of places of interest. An essential stop in the lofty hills of St. Thomas is Earthworks Pottery, a spectacular working pottery carrying irresistible, functional works of art. Visitors can tour the work area of the pottery and chat with the potters. For many, Earthworks becomes one of the unique and wonderful memories of a Barbados holiday. Also at the Earthworks Complex is Vanita Comissiong’s On the Wall Art Gallery, Tulis Batik and the wonderful Tree House Café which is attached to the art gallery where you can sit on the breezy verandah

Boning Flying Fish at Oistins

The coastal town of Oistins is known as the island’s fishing capital, famous for its Friday night Fish Fry. All types of fresh fish are available daily from the vendors in the fish market. The historic Garrison area is home to many of the island’s historic treasures, including the Barbados Museum where the island’s rich heritage and culture are depicted through several informative exhibitions. Also in the area, George Washington House is the only house outside the USA where Washington ever resided and the last Washington site to be recognized anywhere in the world. A museum on the upper floor focuses on the rich cultural heritage of the island in the 17th and 18th centuries, a time when Barbados was one of the wealthiest countries in the hemisphere, Bridgetown one of the three biggest cities with Boston and London. In Bridgetown, Nidhe Israel Synagogue & Museum, founded in 1654, is the earliest constructed synagogue still in use in the Americas. The clever use of interactive audio and video along with the exceptional high quality exhibits make a visit to the Museum of

In the peaceful hush of the gully, visitors can often see troops of Green Monkeys frolicking in the trees – a good time to see them is around 10am and 1:30pm when they are usually fed. The company is the brainchild of Rudolf Kautz-Marshall, the son and grandson of prominent cigar manufacturers in southern Germany. They currently manufacture two lines of premium cigars: Sam Lord and Royal Barbados Cigars, ensuring superior taste and texture, using only the finest raw materials (long filler – Cuban tobacco; binder – Cameroon; wrapper – Ecuador Cuban seed). The European Cigar Journal recently described the flavour of the Royal Barbados Cigar as “excellent”. They encourage visitors to tour the factory and observe the methods by which over 4,000 cigars are produced every week. CAUTION: When snorkeling remember to take a brightly coloured buoy/float – there is a lot of water traffic along this coast. Beware of the poisonous manchineel trees (usually marked with a red ring around the trunk) and the yellow-green “apples” found along many of the west coast beaches. Touching the trees and fruit causes severe blistering.

Helpful Tips Hiring a car is the best way to appreciate the beauty and character of Barbados. When hiring a car, pay attention to the demonstration of the vehicle as most models are different in the Caribbean. Note the emergency hotline number of your rental company and check that they offer breakdown assistance. Most rental companies offer unlimited mileage, free delivery and pick-up to hotels, villas, airport and seaport, baby seats and free road maps. All vehicles are covered by insurance including unlimited liability for passengers and third party personal injury coverage. The Collision Damage Waiver is comprehensive insurance and is highly recommended, but does not usually cover damage to rims and tyres. Although credit card insurance covers you for most motor vehicles, it is recommended that you check which vehicles are exempt. If you have an accident, you must leave your vehicle in its position and call your car hire company and the police immediately – do not admit liability. For Police dial 211 and ambulance 511. In Barbados we drive on the left. Drivers must have a local driver’s permit which can be obtained from most car rental offices, or from any local Police Station for BDS$10 - it is valid for two months from the date of issue. Seat belts are compulsory. Visitors are easily identifiable on the road by the ‘H’ number plate and locals are usually accommodating of your confusion and make allowances. However, since the ‘H’ does identify you as a visitor you can be a target for pickpockets and harassing vagrants. Authorized security personnel at all attractions and places of interest are usually in uniform, so do not pay anyone else who claims to be “security” to guard your vehicle. Please be careful with your possessions and place them in the boot/trunk wherever possible and ensure that the vehicle is always locked when unattended.

Real Estate in Barbados The property market in Barbados has long enjoyed a very solid reputation for being vibrant, rewarding and particularly secure. Today, when most of the world’s major economies are experiencing substantial challenges and financial instability, the purchase of real estate in Barbados can still offer a very attractive option for international investors. Barbados has made excellent progress in recent years and the very positive international exposure that is given to this island by the world’s media, as more and more celebrities choose this country as their preferred vacation destination or purchase a home here, has done a great deal to help stimulate the property market. The initial idea of owning property in Barbados usually materializes as a result of our wonderful climate, friendly people, beautiful environment, outstanding restaurants, vibrant entertainment, numerous attractions and our happy, healthy lifestyle. However, deeper thought will also recognize the easy access to Barbados, firstclass international telecommunications, world standard health care facilities and the long-standing political integrity and social stability that

make this country a safe jurisdiction for investment. There is a wide variety of property available, from studio apartments to plantation houses and an array of elegant residential developments, usually revolving around golf courses, a marina, a tennis resort, polo fields or lifestyle communities. Prime sites command prime prices and so, not surprisingly, it is the seafront properties, particularly on the west coast, that are the most expensive. The south and south-east coasts, and areas inland, offer a choice of attractive but more modest investment opportunities. Villa rentals can provide a healthy return and this income can cover maintenance and management fees. Investors can also anticipate capital gains on their investment in the long term. There are no restrictions on nonBarbadians owning property but you must observe the formality of getting permission from the Central Bank. Financing is not always available for nonBarbadians and so you may have to bring the full amount of the purchase price into the island. People must be sure to register their money with the Central Bank

As such, the villas are generally well maintained and kept in immaculate condition by carefully trained staff, which usually comprises a butler, cook, housemaids, gardener and security watchman. This means that owners and visitors alike can just leave all their worries behind, totally unwind and forget about any sense of responsibility they may have left back home. To further enhance the appeal of ‘villa life’, in recent years the overall quality of the trained staff in the houses and villas has improved considerably, especially in the kitchens. Nowadays there is not only a good supply of Bajan cooks who can expertly produce a variety of delicious local dishes, there now also exists a cadre of very gifted, fully trained chefs who are well capable of producing top class cuisine of an international standard.

Buying Property in Barbados Property must pass conveyance of title, evidenced by the recording of the deeds and certified survey plans at the registry of title. A purchaser will require a registered Barbadian attorney to search the register and establish title to the property prior to the completion of sale. The parties sign a binding contract and the vendor’s attorney holds the deposit until completion, at which time the balance of the price is paid. Once an agreement has been made and a 10% deposit of the agreed price has been paid, then the deal must proceed or the deposit is forfeited. The title may be taken in a person’s name or through a corporate vehicle set up to own the property. It is possible for non-residents to purchase property through a company, that may be incorporated outside Barbados but which must be registered in Barbados. The sale of property by all persons, including citizens or permanent residents, is subject to property transfer tax of 2.5%, plus approximately 1% stamp duty. However, the first $125,000 of the sale proceeds is exempt from property transfer tax provided that there is a building on the property. Attorney’s fees for both the seller and the purchaser are approximately 1.5% to 2% of the sale price. The real estate agent’s commission fees are normally 5% of the sale. Both fees are subject to 15% VAT. Any owner of land in Barbados is required to pay an annual land tax at the following rates: First Bds.$125,000 = 0% Next Bds.$225,000 = 0.10% Next Bds.$500,000 = 0.65% Excess over Bds.$850,000 = 0.75% Following enactment of new legislation, there is a Bds$60,000 cap on land tax rates, provided that the house is used exclusively as a residence by the person who owns the land upon which the house is erected.

Golf

Sandy Lane Country Club

Golf in Barbados For such a small Caribbean island, Barbados is truly blessed with an incredible richness of golf courses. On the south coast can be found the Barbados Golf Club, an enjoyable 18-hole championship course, and Club Rockley, a well-maintained 9-hole resort course. Both are open to the public. On the west coast, the quality of the courses and their very close proximity to each other represent a veritable ‘Golfer’s Paradise’. Endorsed by the successful staging of a world-class golf tournament, and offering four PGA standard courses, Barbados can now be considered a genuine golf destination. On the west coast, Sandy Lane is home to two Tom Fazio designed courses, the Country Club and the Green Monkey; while Royal Westmoreland is a very impressive Robert Trent-Jones Jr., creation. The first eighteen holes are open at the stunning Apes Hill Club where construction is well underway in this spectacular development.

Restaurant Guide 142

Restaurant Guide It is said that variety is the spice of life, and the culinary diversity of Barbados dining makes for refreshing points of difference for visitors to our shores. To make it easier for you to make your choice, we have included Restaurant Classifications on pages 144 to 149 and to help you find the locations of the restaurants, there are area maps for the west coast on page 150 and the south coast on page 166. Wherever you decide to dine be sure to try the island’s national dish, flying fish, along with the wide variety of possibly unfamiliar fresh fish caught daily off the island’s shores. A delicious choice is Mahi Mahi or Dorado referred to locally as Dolphin. This moist, flaky fish is absolutely delicious and is not in any way related to the mammal porpoise, known as ‘Flipper’. Other delicious catches include Barracuda, Red Snapper, Tuna and King Fish. Unless otherwise stated all prices are in Barbados dollars and include 15% VAT. A restaurant bill is usually not presented until it is requested. Although most restaurants welcome walk-in diners there are many that are fully booked in advance, especially from December to May, so reservations are recommended. Bon Apetite!

This year’s best news for lovers of good food is that Larry Rogers is back in business on the west coast. Having enjoyed outstanding success with the original Olives and La Terra, Larry and his wife Michelle have now opened the very exciting Cin Cin, a refreshingly contemporary and elegant restaurant. The open terrace is perfect for ‘al fresco’ ocean side dining at night; while the air-conditioned inner restaurant offers a welcome refuge from the heat of the day at lunchtime, with an expansive glass wall still allowing uninterrupted views of the sea. The trendy bar lounge area, which is also air-conditioned, is a great location for sipping cocktails or enjoying a light bite. With his trademark flair for creating an eclectic range of Mediterranean style dishes with a Caribbean twist, Larry always strives to give his guests an enjoyable eating experience. As the name suggests, Cin Cin is chic and it’s fun. And Larry’s food is as good as ever.
