History in a Nutshell 8
World Heritage Site Nomination Barbados’ historic capital city, Bridgetown, which had its 382nd anniversary in 2010, and the historic Garrison area have been nominated for inscription on the World Heritage list. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Barbados was established as the nucleus of Trans-Atlantic trade and served as headquarters of both the British Royal Navy and Army. Bridgetown is home to the third oldest Parliament in the Commonwealth; a statue of Lord Nelson which pre-dates its counterpart in London’s Trafalgar Square by some 30 years; and the 350-year-old Jewish Synagogue, the oldest to be found anywhere in the entire western hemisphere. Interestingly, Barbados is the only place that George Washington ever visited outside the United States. Originally inhabited by Amerindians before being settled by the English in 1627, Barbados is the only Caribbean island which remained constantly under British rule until 1966 when she gained independence. It is no wonder the island is affectionately known as “Little England”. Over the course of the last four centuries, historical events and a potent mix of African, British and other influences have bequeathed a rich and diverse cultural heritage. Bearing testament to this are the thirteen wonderful museums and two plantation houses that exist in this small island: The Barbados Museum, Nidhe Israel Synagogue and Museum, Arlington Museum, Legends Cricket Museum, Barbados Concorde Experience, George Washington House and Museum, Museum of Parliament and National Heroes Gallery, Folk Museum at Foursquare Rum Factory and Heritage Park, Folkstone Underwater Museum, Mallalieu Motor Museum, Springvale EcoHeritage Museum, St. Nicholas Abbey and Sunbury House. Any visitor motivated enough to delve into Barbados’ past will be richly rewarded.

RUM SHOPS - There are

currently 1600 rum shops in Barbados. These owner-run corner stores and bars rolled into one, provide the surrounding community with a spot for social intercourse and imbibement while supplying imported staples, often on “trust”. Today many offer tasty hot meals at unbeatable prices. RUM - With a starting point over 350 years ago, Barbados was the first place in the world to distill rum. Early connoisseurs included George Washington, who insisted on a barrel of Barbados rum at his inauguration. Today Barbados produces many fine brands of rum. SUGAR - For over 350 years, a unique golden crystal sugar has been the main export of Barbados. As a result there is a rich heritage of first class products made with sugar such as marmalades, chutneys, jellies and unique Bajan sweets. PEPPER SAUCE - Bajan pepper sauce is a traditional concoction made with locally grown scotch bonnet peppers. The yellow colour is derived mainly from tumeric root. Each recipe varies but may include onion, garlic, ginger root, horseradish root, shallots, white rum, mustard, vinegar and salt. It’s delicious with cheese and biscuits or in a Bajan salt bread with ham.

Brazilian Gem Designs Different by Design Brazilian Gem Designs, now celebrating fourteen years at the Colony Club Hotel on Barbados’ west coast, is the brainchild of John Beale and his Brazilian wife Leila, who is a member of the renowned Gemological Institute of America (GIA). John and Leila’s jewellery background began over 25 years ago in Rio de Janeiro through a close relationship with the De Castro Family, owners of the traditional Brazilian company Gregory & Sheehan. Gregory & Sheehan was formed over 75 years ago by former managers of Cartier and Mappin & Webb. They were selected by the Brazilian Government for presenting a gift of special aquamarine jewellery to Queen Elizabeth at her coronation in 1952. John and Leila extended their Brazilian links in 1997 through an association with Hans Stern, known as the Lord of Gemstones and the founder of Brazil’s most famous jewellery company, H. STERN. They were appointed the first agent in the world for H.STERN. Unlike many jewellery outlets, most of Brazilian Gem Designs’ output is 18 karat and handmade. They also assist clients with designs and make pieces especially for them. Leila Beale says “Brazilian Gem Designs is art, where the gems are selected and romanced, as opposed to impersonal mass production of repetitive jewellery made from castings”. She believes that “a piece of jewellery should be something special and lasting”. Leila says that her shop really caters to a niche market and to those people who want a shopping experience in pleasant surroundings where they can satisfy their dreams, emotions and romantic feelings. Art & Craft Art in Barbados has evolved tremendously in recent years, and Caribbean art on the whole is receiving unprecedented international attention. This is evident in the number of art galleries which have sprung up across Barbados in the past few years. The island’s ‘gentler side’ provides a cultural haven among the action-packed activities on offer. So steal away for a day and explore some of the outstanding galleries to be found around the island. During the past decade or so more and more craftspeople have come to the fore, releasing talent that had previously remained dormant. Sightseeing Barbados’ gently rolling landscape and magnificent scenery make the island a real treat to explore. Hiring a car is an excellent idea as this allows you to travel around at your own pace. You will find the foldout Digicel Road Map which is provided with this publication very useful for selecting and finding the major attractions.
Touring the West and North of the Island Holetown, in the parish of St. James, is the site where John Powell landed in 1625 to claim Barbados in the name of England’s King James. Nowadays it is a busy area of hotels, exquisite restaurants, trendy bars and irresistible shops. The main shopping area lies between Sunset Mall and the exquisite, new Limegrove Complex. Just north of Holetown is the Folkestone Marine Museum & Visitor’s Centre, an underwater park and sanctuary providing the perfect fun-filled day for young visitors, including the opportunity to snorkel at the Marine Reserve (snorkeling equipment available for rent at the visitor’s centre). Continuing north into St. Peter, make a stop at The Shell Gallery, just off Highway 1 in the Gibbes area. They have an abundance of shells from around the world and many other shell related gift items for the shell enthusiast. A short distance along the coast is Mullins Bay – an ideal spot for a swim and a bite to eat at Mullins Beach Bar & Restaurant. As you head further north you’ll come to Speightstown, once a fort and thriving port, today it is more a fishing port and commercial centre though much of the 19th century architecture and charm still remains. Be sure to visit Arlington House Museum which gives an interesting glimpse into the history of Speightstown. The Gallery of Caribbean Art, housed in the Northern Business Centre, is also a worthwhile stop for all art lovers. It features a wonderful collection of works from Barbados, Jamaica, Haiti, Trinidad and the rest of the region. As you continue north along the coast, past the exclusive Port St. Charles Marina, you’ll go through the quaint little fishing village known as Six Men’s which has produced some of the island’s most skilled boat builders. Interestingly, during the 19th century, whalers set sail from this area – today, fishermen still bring their fresh catches

ashore here and sell them at the roadside. The delightful Fish Pot Restaurant located at Little Good Harbour is a wonderful stop for lunch or a drink as you explore the north of the island. The Animal Flower Cave, located on the rugged cliff tops at the northernmost point of the island, is a large sea cave with several huge chambers filled with pools, unusual rock formations and a few sea anemones. An informal café serves cold drinks and sandwiches and there are guides who will walk you through the cave. Barbados Wildlife The Reserve is set amidst a lush Mahogany grove where you can mingle with free roaming monkeys, turtles, deer, otters, mongoose and many others. There is also an exotic orchid collection, walk-in bird aviary and iguana sanctuary. Just next door, Grenade Hall Forest & Signal Station houses many interesting artefacts, including pre-Colombian tools unearthed during its restoration. The forest has over 2 km of trails winding through many species of trees and plant life – intriguing, informative and educational.
Central & Eastern Barbados The north-eastern parish of St. Andrew is known for its dramatic landscapes and unusual rock formations. The early Scottish settlers thought that the area was much like their native Scotland and named the region The Scotland District. From here, it’s downhill all the way to the invigorating east coast. In the area of Belleplaine, look out for Sand Dunes, a friendly, casual roadside bar and restaurant run by Curtis Hall – they serve ice cold drinks and the tastiest fresh grilled fish. Further along the Ermy Bourne Highway is Cattlewash, with its wild and stunning Atlantic seascape equalled by the spectacular clay escarpment of Chalky Mount, rising up dramatically inland. The quaint village of Bathsheba is just over the hill in the next bay. In the middle of the bay is Soup Bowl – the most popular surf spot on the island.

Another truly fascinating stop in the north is St. Nicholas Abbey, thought to be one of only three remaining Jacobean houses in the western hemisphere, and probably the oldest original building on the island.
A wonder of Barbados not to be missed. Located in the parish of St. Lucy, at the most northerly tip of the island, the coastal scenery here is spectacular. The cave originally got its name from the sea anemones found in its many rock pools. Steps lead down into the cave through an opening in the cliff. Here, the view from the naturally formed “windows” out to the sea and the pounding surf are simply awesome, so don’t forget your camera. The Pirates Tavern located on the cliff top, serves delicious fresh Bajan Salt Bread cutters (sandwiches), delicious wraps and a good variety of cold drinks. Open daily 9am–5pm. Sightseeing Hunte’s Gardens - an oasis of tranquility
Barbados has some amazing gardens which are open to the public and Andromeda Gardens is no exception. Positioned in the hills above Bathsheba, these gardens encompass some six and a half acres, with lush tropical foliage and cascading colours. It is considered one of the finest botanical gardens in the Caribbean. Follow the signs to Hunte’s Gardens in the lush hills of St. Joseph – a real treat for all garden enthusiasts. Legendary horticulturalist, Anthony Hunte has lovingly landscaped an arena-sized natural sink hole into what can only be described as a stunning tropical garden! The central portion of Barbados is exceptionally verdant with rolling hills and mile upon mile of sugar cane fields. St. George and St. Thomas are the only two island parishes not bordered by the sea. Between them, they feature quite a number of places of interest. An essential stop in the lofty hills of St. Thomas is Earthworks Pottery, a spectacular working pottery carrying irresistible, functional works of art. Visitors can tour the work area of the pottery and chat with the potters. For many, Earthworks becomes one of the unique and wonderful memories of a Barbados holiday. The coastal town of Oistins is known as the island’s fishing capital, famous for its Friday night Fish Fry. All types of fresh fish are available daily from the vendors in the fish market. The historic Garrison area is home to many of the island’s historic treasures, including the Barbados Museum where the island’s rich heritage and culture are depicted through several informative exhibitions. Barbados is surrounded by miles of glorious, palm-fringed, white sand beaches lapped by crystal clear, turquoise waters. Here is a brief coast-by-coast guide to some of our favourites. Check the Digicel Barbados Road Map included in this publication for the symbols indicating Vehicular and Pedestrian Beach Access.
West Coast Calm, clear water, good swimming and snorkeling – lots of watersports. Speightstown Area: In the north, between Little Good Harbour and Speightstown there are a number of splendid beaches with excellent swimming and snorkeling conditions. The Fish Pot Restaurant is a favourite lunch stop for many visitors to the island. Between Port St. Charles and the Almond Beach Village Resort there is a road and parking area providing public access to a lovely stretch of beach. In Speightstown, visit Reefers & Wreckers Dive Shop where brothers, Michael and Philip Mahy can teach you how to scuba dive in a day! Reed’s Bay, Gibbes and Mullins: Magnificent stretch of beach with glassy, turquoise water; good areas for snorkeling with a variety of watersports on offer. Reed’s Bay and Gibbes are lovely quiet beaches with easy access but no beach facilities. Mullins is very busy with chair/umbrella rentals – lunch & drinks available from Mullins Beach Bar & Restaurant. Folkstone Marine Reserve: A 2-km stretch of marine reserve. Good snorkeling – equipment and lockers available for rent at the Visitors Centre. Ample shade, picnic tables and parking.

Holetown Area: Busy beaches – lots of watersports. The Tides, Just Grillin’, Café Indigo and Patisserie & Bistro Flindt are all in the area and are good choices for a bite to eat. For Glass Bottom Boat Tours call Monica at Shamon Too 233-6089, Mark at Sea Spray Watersports - 249 5001, or The Looker at 233-9897. They will pick you up from certain beaches. Paynes Bay: White sandy beach, a favourite with families and cruise ship passengers. Ideal swimming and snorkeling conditions – you may even spot some turtles. Fitts Village: Quiet stretch of beach - good snorkeling. Lunch at Il Tempio Restaurant & Beach Bar, happy hours 4-6pm daily, closed Mondays. Batts Rock: Heading south, take the track on the right shortly after Cin Cin Restaurant. Lots of shady trees, a small children’s playground, picnic tables, shower and changing facilities. Lovely beach with good swimming and snorkeling. Brighton Beach: Home of the Cockspur Beach Club. Enjoy a tour of the rum distillery, then relax on their beautiful beach beach chairs and umbrellas available. Lunch, drinks, beach and watersports - lots of fun!

CAUTION: When snorkeling remember to take a brightly coloured buoy/float – there is a lot of water traffic along this coast. Beware of the poisonous manchineel trees (usually marked with a red ring around the trunk) and the yellow-green “apples” found along many of the west coast beaches. Touching the trees and fruit causes severe blistering.

There are some shallow rock pools at low tide – be sure to ask the locals where the safe areas are. Sand Dunes Restaurant and The Cove serve tasty Bajan lunches – great value. Bathsheba: Fresh ocean breezes and pounding surf, a favourite with surfers. Round House is a good choice for lunch – excellent flying fish paté. CAUTION: The east coast has very dangerous currents – it is NOT safe for swimming.
South-East Coast Big waves – be sure to keep within your depth. Crane Beach: One of the world’s most glorious beaches. Great body surfing. Chair and umbrella rentals. Drinks sold on the beach. Lunch at L’Azure at The Crane Resort features fresh fish and lobster. Cutters of Barbados is located very nearby and they serve delicious sandwiches, pizzas, salads, etc. They will deliver any size picnic to the beach including their great rum punch, cold beer and wonderful wine! Exercise extreme caution when swimming as there are strong currents. For security reasons, you are advised to use the northern end where the NCC wardens are present. Bottom Bay: Beautiful, often deserted bay north of Sam Lord’s Castle. Park on the clifftop and go down the steps – beach chairs available for rent. Watch out for undercurrents. Harrismith: A deserted beach that is probably best to visit in a group for a picnic. There are lovely shallow pools formed by the natural breakwater.

Helpful Tips Hiring a car is the best way to appreciate the beauty and character of Barbados. When hiring a car, pay attention to the demonstration of the vehicle as most models are different in the Caribbean. Note the emergency hotline number of your rental company and check that they offer breakdown assistance. Most rental companies offer unlimited mileage, free delivery and pick-up to hotels, villas, airport and seaport, baby seats and free road maps. All vehicles are covered by insurance including unlimited liability for passengers and third party personal injury coverage. The Collision Damage Waiver is comprehensive insurance and is highly recommended, but does not usually cover damage to rims and tyres. Although credit card insurance covers you for most motor vehicles, it is recommended that you check which vehicles are exempt. If you have an accident, you must leave your vehicle in its position and call your car hire company and the police immediately – do not admit liability. For Police dial 211 and ambulance 511. In Barbados we drive on the left. Drivers must have a local driver’s permit which can be obtained from most car rental offices, or from any local Police Station for BDS$10 - it is valid for two months from the date of issue. Seat belts are compulsory. Visitors are easily identifiable on the road by the ‘H’ number plate and locals are usually accommodating of your confusion and make allowances. However, since the ‘H’ does identify you as a visitor you can be a target for pickpockets and harassing vagrants. Authorized security personnel at all attractions and places of interest are usually in uniform, so do not pay anyone else who claims to be “security” to guard your vehicle. Please be careful with your possessions and place them in the boot/trunk wherever possible and ensure that the vehicle is always locked when unattended.

Buying Property in Barbados Property must pass conveyance of title, evidenced by the recording of the deeds and certified survey plans at the registry of title. A purchaser will require a registered Barbadian attorney to search the register and establish title to the property prior to the completion of sale. The parties sign a binding contract and the vendor’s attorney holds the deposit until completion, at which time the balance of the price is paid. Once an agreement has been made and a 10% deposit of the agreed price has been paid, then the deal must proceed or the deposit is forfeited. The title may be taken in a person’s name or through a corporate vehicle set up to own the property. It is possible for non-residents to purchase property through a company, that may be incorporated outside Barbados but which must be registered in Barbados. The sale of property by all persons, including citizens or permanent residents, is subject to property transfer tax of 2.5%, plus approximately 1% stamp duty. However, the first $125,000 of the sale proceeds is exempt from property transfer tax provided that there is a building on the property. Attorney’s fees for both the seller and the purchaser are approximately 1.5% to 2% of the sale price. The real estate agent’s commission fees are normally 5% of the sale. Both fees are subject to 15% VAT. Any owner of land in Barbados is required to pay an annual land tax at the following rates: First Bds.$125,000 = 0% Next Bds.$225,000 = 0.10% Next Bds.$500,000 = 0.65% Excess over Bds.$850,000 = 0.75% Following enactment of new legislation, there is a Bds$60,000 cap on land tax rates, provided that the house is used exclusively as a residence by the person who owns the land upon which the house is erected.

Restaurant Guide It is said that variety is the spice of life, and the culinary diversity of Barbados dining makes for refreshing points of difference for visitors to our shores. To make it easier for you to make your choice, we have included Restaurant Classifications on pages 144 to 149 and to help you find the locations of the restaurants, there are area maps for the west coast on page 150 and the south coast on page 166. Wherever you decide to dine be sure to try the island’s national dish, flying fish, along with the wide variety of possibly unfamiliar fresh fish caught daily off the island’s shores. A delicious choice is Mahi Mahi or Dorado referred to locally as Dolphin. This moist, flaky fish is absolutely delicious and is not in any way related to the mammal porpoise, known as ‘Flipper’. Other delicious catches include Barracuda, Red Snapper, Tuna and King Fish. Unless otherwise stated all prices are in Barbados dollars and include 15% VAT. A restaurant bill is usually not presented until it is requested. Although most restaurants welcome walk-in diners there are many that are fully booked in advance, especially from December to May, so reservations are recommended. Bon Apetite!
