safety tips

Centipede/Scorpion Bites - While not lethal, the severity and degree of discomfort depends on individual sensitivity. If there is any doubt, see a doctor, especially if a child has been bitten.

Sea Urchins - A black sea egg with long black spines. If you accidentally step on a sea urchin and the spines are protruding, you can try to carefully remove them; if they are beneath the skin DO NOT try to remove them as this could cause infection. Leave them and they will eventually dissolve. To be safe, soak with vinegar or some form of antiseptic.

Coconut Palms - Never leave a baby or small child beneath a coconut palm because of the possibility of falling coconuts.

Manchineel - Avoid contact with the fruit commonly known as Manchineel Apples. They look and smell like small apples but are very poisonous. Sap from the tree and fruit blisters the skin and raindrops falling from the tree can produce the same unpleasant effect. Do not shelter under a manchineel tree when it is raining.

Illegal Drugs - Severe penalties for possession of illegal drugs like Cannabis (weed or ganja) and cocaine exist–up to life imprisonment and yacht confiscation. Customs officials are well-equipped and trained, so no attempts should be made to import or export even small quantities for “personal use.”

Marijuana is illegal in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), although possession of up to two ounces has been decriminalized. Decriminalization means that possession of two ounces or less is not punishable by prison time. However, it can incur fines of up to $500 and is subject to other treatment measures, such as being given educational literature on cannabis use, counseling, and rehabilitative care.

Comprising some 32 islands and smaller cays, stretching 32 miles from St. Vincent in the north to Petit St. Vincent in the south, the Grenadines have long been home to a rich tradition of seafaring. To this day, sailing remains an integral part of everyday life for most islanders. As such, this special part of the world is tailor-made for safe but adventurous cruising all year-round. Each island is different, offering its own unique character and attractions, and sufficiently close to each other that you can usually see your next destination as you make your way from point to point during daylight hours. The diversity of the various islands automatically provides a wide variety of scenic beauty, natural anchorages and commercial moorings. There is an excellent supply of farm fresh fruit and vegetables, delicious local bread and of course plenty of good fish and seafood. You can also order beautiful exotic flowers to brighten your cabins.

There are a number of reputable yacht charter companies operating out of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. These companies generally offer starts in St. Vincent, Bequia, Canouan or Union Island. Sailing out of any one of these locations puts you immediately on the doorstep of the Grenadines without the 65-mile sail (including a 5-hour openwater passage) from St. Lucia, or the 6 to 7-hour sail (often against the wind) from Grenada.

The yacht charter industry has recently benefited from the completion of the Sandy Lane Yacht Club and Residences – a sophisticated and beautifully equipped full-service yacht marina in Canouan. Looking forward, the K-Group has received planning permission to substantially upgrade the Blue Lagoon Hotel and Marina facility in St. Vincent adding 150 more berths.

If you are a land-based holiday maker, you can still enjoy a day out on the water exploring the surrounding islands. The historic Bequia-built sailing schooner, Friendship Rose, operates day charters to the Tobago Cays, St. Vincent and Mustique. Also based in Bequia during the winter months (Dec-Apr) is the beautiful, classic sailing schooner yacht, Heron. Built by her captain, Nigel ‘Twig’ Bower, she has sailed over 100,000 nautical miles since her launch in 2003 and carried more than 35,000 guests. She was featured in the movie, ‘The Rum Diary,’ starring Johnny Depp. Sail Grenadines also offers bareboat, skippered and all-inclusive yacht charters. Island Time, a 2010 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 42i, is available for day trips and luxury overnight cruises to the Tobago Cays and the beautiful Grenadine islands with optional on-board catering.

In the Southern Grenadines operating out of Union Island, Wind and Sea and Scaramouche offer memorable trps.

Seven Days in Paradise

A Non-Sailor’s Guide to Sailing in the Grenadines

I had been dreaming of sailing in the Grenadines for many years. Whenever I visited any of the islands–be it Barbados, St Vincent, Bequia, St Lucia, or Jamaica–I looked longingly at the catamarans and sailboats passing by. I often imagined what it might be like to stay on one, to sail between islands and to jump off the side of the boat for a swim in the calm waters of a deserted bay.

But there was always one not-sosmall challenge: I didn’t know how to sail, none of my friends could sail, and nobody I knew had a boat. So, I thought it would remain just a dream–until I discovered the option of simply chartering a boat. And that is what we did. Last year, two friends and I chartered a catamaran for seven days, hiring a skipper to sail for us: the fabulous Captain Stanley. We loved it so much that we went back again this year for another seven days of sailing with Captain Stanley. And I know we will go sailing again.

So here are some of my favourite things about sailing in the Grenadines:

Leaving Everything Behind

Staying on a boat is like stepping into another world. You only pack the essentials–a few swim shorts or bikinis, t-shirts, a sarong, a pair of shorts,

one nice dress, and good music–and immerse yourself in the beauty and calm of the sea. You’re far away from everything, surrounded only by pristine waters and stunning natural scenery. It’s one of the purest, calming and most beautiful experiences imaginable.

Early Morning Coffees on Deck

Every morning on board, I woke early from the sound of the waves against the boat, quietly made myself a cup of coffee, and sat outside–either on the top deck or the front of the boat and just looked at whichever bay we happened to be moored in. Every morning brought a different island, a different view. Sitting there in absolute silence, watching the sunrise and feeling the gentle rocking of the catamaran, was both magical and calming. Once the rest of the ‘crew’ woke up, we enjoyed a long breakfast and a swim around the boat before heading off to the next island.

The Sweet Charm of Bequia

Sailing from St Vincent to Bequia is a special experience. Bequia is exactly how you imagine the Caribbean to be: sweet little houses dotting the hills around the bay, charming shops along the prettiest main road, makeshift beach bars, and family-run restaurants where you can sit on whale-bone chairs right by the water. For most sailors, Bequia is the first stop when sailing in the Grenadines, and we were no exception. We never miss a chance to visit Bequia. We stocked up on groceries at the small mini-mart in Port Elizabeth, bought precious wine (good wine is a rare find on the islands), and enjoyed a long lunch at one of the many lovely little restaurants along the boardwalk. Our afternoons ended on Princess Margaret Beach, with cold beers, good chats and our toes in the sand.

Everything Tastes Better When Sailing

We did not expect to eat as well as we did while sailing. Everything we home-cooked (or should I say “boatcooked”?) tasted better after a day of swimming and sailing. There are also so many great places to eat out across the islands, big and small. Some of our highlights included burgers at Basil’s Bar on Mustique, grilled lobster at Big Mama’s Beach Grill in the Tobago Cays, a three-course meal at Soho Beach House on Canouan, dinner at the tiny Tenuta restaurant in Chatham Bay, Union Island. However, without a doubt the best meal we had was the fish Captain Stanley caught for us–barracuda fresh from the sea and grilled within the hour. Marinated in garlic and onions, served with a salad and cold beers, it was absolute bliss.

The Sea, the Wind, the Waves, the Sun

Although none of us were sailors, we adored the long crossings between islands. Imagine sitting on the top deck of a catamaran, under the sails, watching the boat glide through the

waves. Sometimes the sea was calm, other times it was “a little rolly,” as Captain Stanley called it. We spent hours taking it all in–just the sea, the sun, and the rhythm of the waves. To make it even more magical, our catamaran had speakers throughout the boat, so we listened to beautiful music while sailing. It could not have been more perfect.

Rum, Coconuts, and a Deserted Island

Believe everything you hear about the uninhabited Tobago Cays. They are as beautiful as everyone says. With crystalclear water, incredible snorkelling, and empty beaches, they are a highlight of every sailing trip in the Grenadines. This year, Captain Stanley took us to Petit Tabac, a tiny island off the reef, the island Jack Sparrow lost his rum on. We made sure to bring our own Bajan rum and poured it into freshly picked coconuts. Best drink ever.

Fresh grilled lobsters in the Tobago Cays
Margueritas on board in Chatham Bay

A Floating Little World

Another delight of sailing was the vendors who came to our boat in dinghies or on surfboards when moored in Bequia or in St. Vincent. Whether it was fresh croissants and pastries for breakfast, water, local fruit, or handmade crafts from shells and coconuts, it feels quite special to buy things while sitting on the back steps of your boat. We still proudly wear the shell bracelets we bought in Wallilabou Bay, St Vincent, during our first trip.

A View to Die For in Mayreau

Like everyone who has the luck to moor at Saltwhistle Bay in Mayreau (population 271), we enjoyed the beauty of the bay with its unique setting, a calm bay separated from the waves only by a small, palm-tree lined strip of beach. But don’t just stay on the beach - walk up the hill. Behind the ruins of the little old Catholic church on top of the hill you will be rewarded with an uninterrupted view of the Tobago Cays and beyond. On your way back treat yourself to a sundowner at Blackboy’s bar on the beach or chill in the Last Bar Before the Jungle.

Celebrating each island Caribbean style

Every island you will see while sailing in the Grenadines is different and unique - charming Bequia, elegant Mustique, remote Mayreau, stunning Tobago Cays, quirky Union Island, cool Canouan. We started to celebrate the delight of experiencing these differences by having a different sundowner on board in every bay we moored in: rum punch in Princess Margaret’s beach in Bequia, beer in Saltwhistle Bay in Mayreau, rum and coconut water in the Tobago Cays, gin tonic in Canouan, margaritas in Chatham Bay in Union Island, and a nice glass of rosé in Mustique.

Nights Under the Stars

My last story about our sailing trip is about my favourite moment and one of the most magical experiences in my life. We anchored in the tiny, uninhabited Tobago Cays, and had the best spot close to the reef. As night fell, we were lying in the dark on the trampoline at the front of the catamaran, looking up at the cloudless, black night sky. No light pollution, no noise. Far away from everything. Just the light from the thousands of stars and the soft sound of the waves. The night sky was unbelievably beautiful, I have never seen stars shine so bright. It was like a dome of stars surrounding us, reflected by the dark calm sea. It felt surreal, like a dream. That moment will stay with me forever.

Kirsten’s Top Tips for Sailing:

* Hire a great skipper. We sailed with Captain Stanley from The Moorings.

* Don’t over-shop groceries; there are plenty of great beach bars and restaurants.

* Pack less than you think you’ll need.

* Forget books–there’s too much to see and do. Instead, bring a hammock and find two palm trees on the beach.

* Most importantly, savour every moment.

So if you ever have the chance to go sailing in the Grenadines, take it. It truly is a special experience.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines has always touted its fabulous sailing, snorkelling and daychartering, but it is not widely known for its spectacular diving. Throughout the island chain you can snorkel through a “bat cave,” dive over geothermal vents, or take a night dive on a wreck with hundreds of lobsters. Visitors often feel so at home that they return year after year, and divers return to see rare seahorses, pipefish and frogfish.

Mainland St. Vincent offers stunning diving with dive operators at Blue Lagoon, opposite Young Island at Villa, Paradise Beach and Richmond Vale. The impressive landscape of St. Vincent continues underwater with dramatic wall dives full of black coral and azure sponges steeply shelving away to volcanic sand. St. Vincent has been a well-kept secret among divers interested in photographing our unusual marine life. The abundance and variety of rarely-seen creatures earned St. Vincent the nickname Critter

Capital of the Caribbean and the island was voted as having the best Caribbean diving by Sport Diver magazine. As spectacular as the diving is in St. Vincent, the Grenadines are not to be outdone, with easily accessible wrecks and pristine reefs full of nooks and crannies to search for lobster, cleaner shrimp and eels.

The island of Bequia has two dive shops both located on the Belmont Walkway. The close proximity of the dive sites makes diving easy and rewarding. Bequia’s leeward coastline

is fringed by a sloping reef where divers may find themselves surrounded by schools of creole wrasse, blue tangs and dozens of other curious species.

Heading further south, fabulous diving and snorkeling is available in the turquoise waters around Mustique, Canouan, the Tobago Cays, Mayreau, Union, Palm and Petit St. Vincent (PSV),

with dive shops in Mustique, Union and PSV.

Snorkeling within the Tobago Cays Marine Park almost guarantees you’ll find hawksbill and green turtles. You can float lazily on the surface and watch them grazing on the turtle grass while keeping an eye out for southern stingrays and eagle rays that pass by.

More adventurous divers and snorkelers will head over the horseshoe reef to glimpse nurse and reef sharks or dive on the World War I gun-boat wreck, Purini, near Saline Bay, Mayreau. St. Vincent and the Grenadines continues to promote its marine resources with an emphasis on conservation.

As one diver put it, “The dive sites I visited seemed untouched. On many days I dove with the dive master only. On crowded days I dove with six others. This is SCUBA at its best... I have dived in areas ranging from the Pacific to the Indian Ocean. The dive sites in your country rank on a world class level!”

Black Point Park

Black Point Park is home to the unique Jasper Tunnel. This tunnel is over 300 feet long and links Grand Sable with Byera Bay. The tunnel was ordered built by the British and constructed by slave labour around 1815 to provide an access route and storage for sugar exports. The black sand beach and picnic area is thickly vegetated with coconut trees and is one of the most popular recreational sites on the island.

La Soufriere Volcano

La Soufrière is a stratovolcano with recorded eruptions dating back to 1718, with notable eruptions occurring in 1812, 1902, 1979 and the most recent in 2020. There was no loss of life but residents north of the Rabacca River lost their homes and have been relocated to Orange Hill Estate. Hundreds of houses have been built, as well as two bridges, funded by several entities. The surrounding farms and forests have

recovered very quickly. In some areas you wouldn't know there had been an eruption.

A national park, the volcano is restricted by government, not because the volcano is still active – it is currently at the lowest volcanic danger level – but because it is very slippery close to the crater and it is also very easy to get lost in this area. Guides are a must for this hike.

Fort Charlotte

Completed in 1806, Fort Charlotte is on a ridge 600 feet above the sea, providing a magnificent view across Kingstown and down the Grenadines. On a clear day, Grenada 90 miles to the south, can be seen.

Fort Duvernette

Also known as Rock Fort, this defensive structure was built around 1800 to protect the town of Calliaqua. About 50 yards off Young Island Resort, it still has many of its armaments intact.

Botanic Gardens

Located on 20 acres of land on the outskirts of the capital, Kingstown, the Botanic Gardens are the oldest in the Western Hemisphere.

Layou Petroglyph Park

A cultural landmark with an indigenous petroglyph, the Rutland River and a forested trail. The site is pre-Columbian in origin, and the Layou petroglyph most likely dates to between AD300 and AD600.

Belmont Lookout & Montreal Gardens

This lookout provides visitors with the opportunity to view one of St. Vincent’s most productive and picturesque landscapes. There is a viewing platform, washrooms and interpretive signage. Just north of Mesopotamia are the Montreal Gardens which are a wonderful place to see an amazing array of tropical blooms.

Top trails choosen by experienced guide Paul Cyrus

St. Vincent is the ideal place for a hiking holiday because there are numerous mountains and trails, from the popular to the relatively unknown. Several of the trail heads are within striking distance of the capital, Kingstown. The trails range in difficulty from a pleasant walk to challenging, with options for both seasoned hikers and the less intrepid.

To gain some much-needed information on the best places to

hike in SVG, as well as some practical knowledge, we spoke to one of the island’s top guides, Paul Cyrus. He says that the best time of year to hike is during the cooler months of December, January, February and March. Hikers should wear comfortable clothing and hiking footwear, apply mosquito repellent and sunblock, bring plenty of water, and find out exactly what the hike entails before starting out. Paul says many people overestimate their

level of fitness and don’t appreciate the impact of humidity, especially in a rainforest. However, he assures that all the trails are beautiful and well worth the time and effort, and hikers will see a diversity of flora and fauna no matter which trail they choose.

Here are his top picks:

Highlights

Stunning views of the surrounding rain forest on the lower slopes of the Volcano and the uninhabited central mountain range.

Guide Essential

Entrance is free

The La Soufriere Cross Country Trail crosses the width of St Vincent, and can be walked starting from either the leeward or windward side. The total trail is approximately 9 miles (15 km) long. The easier trail is the loop trail to the volcano from the windward (East) side, which begins at the Rabacca trailhead, and is about 4 miles (6 km) long. The leeward trail is longer and more difficult. If hikers want to go down into the crater of the volcano they can do so quite easily. At least 2 litres of water and high energy snacks are necessary. It can be cold and wet at the volcano so taking along a light long sleeve top is recommened.

St. Vincent’s beaches are all public. In the south, Indian Bay, Villa, Young Island and Blue Lagoon beaches have soft, golden sand and border many of the island’s hotels and restaurants making it convenient for ordering food and drinks. The best snorkeling and safest swimming is along the west coast. The dramatic windward coast beaches have black sand as a result of volcanic lava flows and the sea is often quite rough with dangerous undercurrents.

Family Friendly

Villa Beach and Indian Bay

These two white sand beaches, divided by a small hilly projection, are easily accessible. Both offer good snorkeling and provide lovely views of Young Island with a string of places offering great dining and entertainment.

Blue Lagoon

Surrounded by palm trees, with a lovely beach excellent for swimming .

A very pleasant anchorage the Lagoon is now a port of entry with Customs and Immigration on site at the the Blue Lagoon Marina, a full service marina offering 20 slips and 4 alongside berths with water and 110/220 electricity with 50 Hz.

Snorkeler’s Paradise

Wallilabou

A picturesque bay and a good diving spot with reliable line handlers available to help secure yachts. Customs and Immigration can be cleared here between 4pm and 6pm (up to 7pm during the busier winter season).

Chateaubelair

With its 40-foot deep reef and array of brightly coloured fish, it is a snorkeler’s dream. While usually a good anchorage, especially on the eastern half of the bay, the northerly swells in the winter months can cause difficulties. Customs and Immigration clearance is also available in Chateaubelair.

Petit and Grand Byahaut

Two small bays where diving and snorkeling are superb. At Dinosaur Head (face of Byahaut point) you will find a 120-foot wall covered in sponges, seafans and coral.

Buccament Bay

A well-protected, very calm bay with an excellent anchorage shelf in the eastern corner close to the beach. There is exceptionally good snorkeling here. Sandals Beaches Resort is located here.

Perfect for Picnics

On the windward side of the island there are a number of beautiful black sand beaches with facilities. Because of strong undercurrents, most windward beaches are not recommended for swimming.

Owia Salt Pond
Photo: Edson Reece

Brighton Salt Pond

A fascinating mangrove swamp which attracts many visitors. It is a very popular recreational and entertainment spot. The gazebos are great for birthdays and other functions.

Owia Salt Pond

On the northeastern coast, close to the Carib village of Owia. The 2-hour drive runs along the scenic coastline. This unusual gift of nature consists of a huge sea bathing pool enclosed by lava peaks and ridges. The pounding waves crash into this barrier and then gently cascade into the pool. Surrounded by mountains and the thunderous surf, the area is an ideal spot for picnics, swimming and snorkeling. Facilities include gazebos, bar, shower and washrooms, children’s play area, craft centre and fire pits. There is a small entrance fee. A 5-minute walk behind the old arrowroot factory in Owia are 4 waterfalls which are the beginning of a 1/4 mile of solid volcanic rock formation, through which the river cascades into many waterfalls.

Young Island Cut

The anchorage here, lying in clear water, is a favourite with yachtspeople. Anchor with care, as the current sweeps both ways and the centre of the cut is 65 feet deep. Moorings are available, but stay clear of the sea bed close to Young Island itself. The restaurant at Young Island Resort is a wonderful choice for breakfast, lunch or dinner in a relaxed beachfront setting, in the open-air, under thatched roof huts. Everyone raves about their freshly baked breads.

West Coast Gems - above and below the surface

The west coast of St. Vincent offers some of the best coastal scenery in the region and spectacular diving opportunities, with the impressive landscape underwater. The dive shops here offer some dramatic wall dives, full of black coral and azure sponges steeply shelving away to volcanic sand. Divers often find themselves surrounded by schools of creole wrasse, blue tangs or dozens of other curious species.

You may be surprised to know that the small island nation of St. Vincent and the Grenadines has a thriving and dynamic fashion scene. There are several exciting women designers who have found their voices, producing modern takes on traditional island attire, handcrafted jewelry and accessories. Caribbean fashion events, local shops and a thoughtful and vibrant web presence, have provided avenues for these designers to showcase and market their creations.

We spoke to Kimya Glasgow, Karen De Freitas and Odini Sutherland to get a feel for each of their brands and to learn about their creative journey. What

we discovered is that while they are all busy developing their respective brands, they are all committed to collaborating with other local creatives. They also have a committment to supporting community inititives through philanthropic work and sharing knowledge with other entrepreneurs.

In the aftermath of the 2021 eruptions of La Soufrière volcano on St. Vincent, Karen started The Tallawah Collective with fellow Vincentian artists to assist in the local disaster relief efforts. Through the sale of graphic t-shirts, posters, hats and fine art prints, The Tallawah Collective raised funds for families affected by the volcanic

Bequia Threadworks

eruptions. Kimya is committed to offering mentorship and coaching to help emerging small business owners and she is actively involved in the Fashion Association of SVG. Odini Sutherland has been working with Threadworks, a non profit organization in Bequia that teaches women to sew. Threadworks then employs some of the graduates of the programme to produce clothing, embroidery and upholstery.  All their brands are available for sale at the Common Ground stores in St. Vincent and Bequia, which carry 23 local brands, including fashion apparel and accessories, fragrance, skin care products, footwear, books and art.

Odini Sutherland has been working with Bequia Threadworks, a non profit organization in Bequia that teaches women to sew. Threadworks then employs some of the graduates of the programme to produce clothing, embroidery and upholstery.

Peta Odini

Odini Sutherland, who designs under the label Peta Odini, designs clothing that reflects a cosmopolitan, contemporary Caribbean sensibility. Garments are designed to be mixed and matched, with a relaxed and colourful aesthetic. She designs each item, cuts the pattern and then the clothes are stitched by local seamstresses.

The brand Peta Odini is known for menswear and androgynous styles but she plans to expand her brand and is  now focusing on women’s wear due to popular demand.

Odini is also involved with the brand Thread Works and has been designing for the brand for the last two years. Thread Works is a non-profit organization which was established in 2018 to train women in Bequia to sew.  The organization now employs 9 seamstresses who are graduates of the programme and Thread Works count cruise ships passengers, yachties and visiting tourists as customers.

Peta Odini collections have been presented at various Caribbean fashion events and the brand’s “Slow Boat” collection debuted at the 50th edition of Portugal Fashion Week in Porto.

Her work has found an audience with people who appreciate both the artistry behind the garments and their effortless wearability. Her  fashion brand offers clothing, beauty products and accessories for women and men under the brands Soka, Sokanaval and Charles + Olive.

Karen studied textile design, which gave her a strong foundation in printmaking and pattern development and this expertise is evident throughout her collections. Each piece is individually designed and she often collaborates with local artisans.

Karen’s work was featured at Paris Fashion Week 2024 with the debut of her Spring/Summer 2025 collection, “Canboulay.” The Soka brand has also

appeared at other fashion events in Brooklyn, Bermuda and Jamaica and was featured in several magazines.

St. Vincent-a New Way of Living

More than ever, the Caribbean region has become a very attractive place to relocate. Driven by harsher winters in North America, and the other realities of climate change. However, the practicalities of making the move can be daunting. So many factors to consider. So many details to work out and work through.

Where to begin?

A successful transition begins with having a clear picture of the desired lifestyle. Research of the islands and their immigration laws, political and economic stability. Then of course you eliminate each island based on your preferred language, crime rates, banking rules, government requirements for immigration etc.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines is a natural choice for getting away from the North American “rat race”.

A group of islands with unparalleled beauty, economic and political stability. Plenty of natural fresh water sources and a constant breeze that provides fresh breathable air.

You may want to initially lease a property to get a feel for the country, set up your banking and then decide and evaluate which of the SVG islands meets your longer term needs. Each island has its own unique characteristics as well as different color sand. Real estate values in SVG are some of the lowest in the Caribbean region. Yet there is a wide variety from which to choose.

There are no “track homes” in SVG. Each home is custom built so there is a wide variety of styles, sizes and layout. Like everywhere else in the world, there are neighborhoods which demand a higher price per unit than

others. Also, the closer to the center, Kingstown on the Island of St. Vincent, the pricier the properties become. The price point for an average 3-bedroom, 2-bath single story home range from US$200,000 to US$250,000.00. For the average 4 bedrooms, 2 story house prices can range from USD$300,000 to USD$560,000 depending on area. Location, sea views and the condition

of the property also affect the price of property.

Choosing to purchase a building lot is also a possibility. There is a lot of choice when it comes to land. The lower entry point is also an attractive alternative. However, building your dream home can be a challenge. It demands that you manage your expectations. Island life is more relaxed. Things move at a slower

pace. The exact reason you decide to choose a Caribbean lifestyle. Land is sold at a price per sq. ft. with a typical building lot being as small as 3,500 sq. ft. to 5,000 sq. ft. Prices range from USD$3.60 to USD$7.00 per sq. ft.

As a non-Vincentian Citizen, you will be required to apply for the Alien Land Holding License through a local attorney to purchase either a lot or

a home. The process of purchasing property in SVG is quite like that of North America. You can apply for financing through the local commercial financial institutions where you can also open your checking, savings, and investment accounts. Real Estate transactions take a bit longer to close so again patience is a requirement.

Our team at RE/MAX Results Realty are here to serve you with expert advice guiding you through the process with local knowledge and years of experience. We too are recent Vincentians, relocating from North America and are willing to share our knowledge and experience to assist you in making the transition a smooth one.

The Windward Side

This side of the island is the most fertile, and it was here in the 18th and 19th centuries that several of Bequia’s nine sugar plantations were situated

Located at ‘The Mill’ is the home of Grenadine Wild Sea Salt. They host tours, talks, tastings and private events around all things culinary and creative. They have restored the ancient ruins of The Old Sugar Mill which dates back to the late 17th century, set in a tranquil, park-like setting with their 140 patented solar evaporation stills. As part of Spring Plantation – where sugar, indigo, arrowroot, cassava and copra were once produced – it is most likely the oldest structure on the island.

Firefly Estate at Spring offers cross country Golf and Estate Tours in a remarkably beautiful setting. The Firefly Hotel's restaurant and bar overlook the stunning estage grounds.

Port Elizabeth

This town is nestled along the waterfront of Admiralty Bay and rises into the surrounding hills. A number of brightly coloured shops, houses, restaurants, small hotels and guesthouses complete the picturesque scene. While wandering around the harbour, look out for the ‘House of Parliament’ – the local name given to the shaded waterfront area under

the almond trees, where the island’s talented artists and craftspeople display their wares and taxis assemble to collect and deposit passengers.

Belmont Walkway

A delightful continuous coastal path in Admiralty Bay was damanged by Beryl but repairs should be complete in early 2025. A number of inviting little bars and restaurants are dotted all along the way. Continuing on from the walkway is the Princess Margaret Coastal Trail leading to Princess Margaret beach. At the end of Princess Margaret beach there is another trail over the hill to Lower Bay just beyond.

Paget Farm

As you make your way west along the winding southside road you’ll eventually come to the colourful fishing community of Paget Farm, where there are beautiful views across the sea to the uninhabited islands of Petit Nevis, site of the old whaling station, and Isle a Quatre. The James F. Mitchell Airport which was opened in 1992 is also nearby. Beyond the airport in Adams Bay is the relatively new resort, The Liming.

Friendship Bay

On the south coast is Friendship Bay and St. Hilaire Point, where many a Bequia boat has taken shape along the shores. Indeed the famous Friendship Rose that offers old time schooner tours to the Tobago Cays was built here.

Schooner Men

Strong men they were, and purposeful. They knew The island families, their business and their crew, The different island etiquettes, through strange To an outsider, they knew, they arranged A new deal, savvy to the wiles and ways, Of pompous officials. Flattery and praise Came easily when needed. They endured, Accepting that such things cannot be cured. Strong men they were. Weakness would not achieve Their purpose. They must take control, believe Their ship could hold a steady course. The tools On board were meager, and a fool Would not survive for long in island trade, Nor ship, nor crew, survive each passage made.

The wild and woolly mistress that they shared, A fickle, wanton whore who little cared For those they left behind, friends, family She had the sailor’s will for she could be Alluring, yes? But when her white teeth bared, Her rage was awesome, none aboard were spared The writhing, vicious fury of the sea, For brutal, harsh and cruel she could be! And yet within each sailor, fire burns And he will know no peace till he returns To feel once more, her eager arms caress him, To let her undulating charms obsess him. She will betray his love over and over, This schooner man, this sailorman, this rover.

They rarely die in bed, crew, mate, or master, Skills falter, luck will fail, their ship will meet disaster, Hurricanes shred sails, pound them to matchsticks on a reef, A violent micro burst, whose sudden furies bring such grief To children, now left fatherless, lovers left to weep For a beloved, lost forever in the ocean’s deep. And yet it’s only those who ply Drake’s Spanish Lake that know, Fulfillment, satisfaction, and the boundless joy that glows From deep inside, when everything goes right, when things feel good, North Easterlies blow sweetly and their wanton mistress’ mood Is at its best, her beauty bright, and then who would not be, Helm in hand and cruising on the blue Caribbean Sea?

Bequia Heritage Museum

The Bequia Heritage Museum complex in St. Hillary, Friendship was officially opened on December 15th 2020. Its completion represented the fulfilment of nearly thirty years of planning, fundraising and aspiration by the Trustees of the Bequia Heritage Foundation, spearheaded by the late Pat Mitchell.

The spacious, airy Boat Museum explores Bequia’s famed maritime heritage, including shipbuilding and whaling. Among the exhibits is a traditional Amerindian dug-out canoe, there to represent the chosen mode of transport and exploration by those skilled and fearless indigenous people who first journeyed from South America into the Caribbean islands thousands of years ago.

Next door is the air-conditioned Annex, with its fine display of Amerindian pottery and artefacts - almost all found on Bequia, together with a selection of historic material dating from the European period of Bequia’s settlement.

A fascinating in-depth PowerPoint presentation in the Annexe Gallery augments the displays in both buildings, and fleshes out the arc of Bequia’s unique 1,700 year history with maps, charts, commentary and contemporary documentation.

The presentation also includes a selection of rare early photographs from the time when ship-building and whaling were the lifeblood of the island’s economy, and which give a remarkable glimpse into the island’s not-so-distant past.

Reproductions of rare antique Bequia maps and a selection of books and postcards are also available to purchase at the Museum.

Dedicated and knowledgeable Museum Representatives are on hand to welcome you and show you around. Allow plenty of time to take in all of the exhibits and the detailed information available, and to enjoy the Museum’s beautiful

and tranquil location overlooking Friendship Bay.

Admiralty Bay

One of the best harbours in the Caribbean because of its deep protected ‘U’ shape, calm, clear waters and ample depth, allowing large boats to come close to shore for maintenance. When anchoring stay clear of the ferry route to the main jetty. Newly opened at press time The Cocktail Lab with an idyllic location in Admiralty Bay promises to be a winner.

Princess Margaret Beach

A popular anchorage and a glorious stretch of beach with a convenient dinghy dock if you are arriving by water taxi. Generally calm with perfect swimming conditions – yachts are required to anchor at least 200 yards off shore for the safety of swimmers. Jack’s Beach Bar is a favourite hangout and the perfect spot for lunch – linger on to catch the sunset with a few of their cocktail concoctions!

Lower Bay

A long stretch of powdery white sand with crystal clear water, excellent for swimming, snorkeling and sunbathing with beach chairs available for rent. A stretch of on-shore reef provides an area of shallow pools along the shoreline making it especially suitable for children. Keegan’s Beachside Bar & Restaurant is situated in the middle of the bay and is a good choice for food and drinks. Further along the beach is De Reef Restaurant and Bar, and tucked away in Lower Bay village, you’ll find Dawn’s Café serving tasty local dishes.

Friendship Bay

On the south side, Friendship Bay is a sheltered, crescent shaped bay with lots of shade. It’s a good alternative anchorage for yachts and offers great snorkeling, scuba diving and windsurfing conditions. The stylish Bequia Beach Hotel with its trendy is located here – enquire about their day passes, starting at US$75, and take advantage of the hotel’s first class facilities. Check out their trendy and informal Sand Bar

Spring Bay & Industry

On the eastern side of the island this stretch of often deserted coastline is shaded by wooded hills and countless coconut palms – good conditions for kitesurfing and windsurfing and perfect for picnics! Crescent Beach on Industry Bay is the best for swimming and snorkeling on this side of the island.

Hope Bay - A Hidden Gem

If you can find it, Hope Bay on the east coast is good for beachcombing and a great spot for picnics with a group of friends. Pounded by the Atlantic surf, it’s also good for body surfing but only if you’re a strong swimmer. Beware of strong undercurrents and be sure to stay within your depth.

Iconic Island Life

There is nowhere quite like Mustique, from the tranquil, unspoilt natural environment to the social life and annual events that guests return to enjoy year after year.

Air Adelphi, the Mustique company’s airline, expanded its flight schedule in 2023, making it easier to travel to the island with new flights from St. Lucia, Barbados and Martinique.

No trip to Mustique would be complete without a trip to Basil’s Bar. For nearly fifty years it has been the cultural heartbeat of Mustique where generations of homeowners, guests, fishermen and pirates come to let their hair down.

Whoever you are, Basil’s welcomes you with open arms for a delicious lunch overlooking the sea, a beer at

the bar as the sun sets or a cocktail in between dances at Jump Up.

From January 22 to February 6, 2025, Basil’s Bar will host Mustique’s 30th annual Blues Festival, with old friends, new faces and some special new experiences.

Mustique offers a spectacular array of accommodation options too. The Cotton House is set amongst 13 acres of tropical gardens leading down to Endeavour Bay. The hotel’s 17 bedrooms are set around the central Great Room, containing a Bar and Veranda Restaurant. The luxurious garden and

sea facing villas, suites and cottages with private verandas and plunge pools are the ideal place to unwind.

The hotel’s Beach Café invites you to a delicious lunch. After, a trip to the spa in the afternoon or their brand new state of the art gym, is a must.

Additionally, there are over 80 villas–each wonderfully unique–that you may be lucky enough to rent for a week or two.

Many visitors are so deeply captivated with this iconic island life that they fall under its spell only to return year after year.

Mayreau’s 1.5 square miles represents a unique small island society of 400 residents. The mail boat, carrying much needed supplies, provides essential and affordable transport for residents to and from St. Vincent and other islands. Despite the fact that Mayreau remains relatively untouched, the islanders do cater to visitors with several bars, restaurants, shops and accommodation. And of course, in this stunning part of the world, Mayreau is developing because more and more people want to be here.

Water from the Desalination Plant is sold on the dock in Saline Bay.

Tobago Cays Marine Park

The Tobago Cays Marine Park was established to protect this precious ecosystem of nine islands including the five uninhabited islands of the Tobago Cays, the uninhabited islets off Mayreau - Catholic Island, Jondall and Mayreau Baleine, as well as the populated island of Mayreau itself.

All visitors to the Tobago Cays Marine Park are required to pay user fees according to the purpose of their visit;

including visitors on private yachts, charter yachts, cruise ships and dive boats, who pay EC$10 per person and EC$5 for children aged 12 and under. The rate for a Yacht Mooring is EC$45 for 24-hours, a 3-day special is EC$90.

A Story of Resilience & Community Spirit

Photo: Dan Cristaldi

The Southern Grenadines After Beryl

July 1st, 2024, is a date etched in the hearts of Grenadines residents. On that day Hurricane Beryl–the first serious hurricane to hit in over a century–unleashed its unprecedented fury as the earliest Category 5 hurricane on record, with winds reaching 150 mph when it made landfall. Its devastation was vast, but what emerged in the aftermath was the indomitable spirit of the Grenadine islanders.

“It was like a ghost town. Everyone was lost and confused, unsure of where to go, what to do. It was like a war zone in a horror movie.”

– Glenroy Adams, Grenadines Dive

Assessment of the damage

Hurricane Beryl caused extensive destruction, with over 80% of buildings across the southern Grenadines suffering damage. On Union Island and Mayreau, entire communities were displaced, and the island’s infrastructure was left in tatters. Many were injured, and one Union Island resident – a young family man who was a well-loved member of the community – lost his life. Palm Island and Petit St Vincent suffered similar losses with the hotels there decimated. The World Bank’s Global Rapid Post-Disaster Damage Estimation (GRADE) report estimated a loss of USD 230.6 million, a staggering 22 per cent of St Vincent and the Grenadines GDP. Union Island and the other islands of the southern Grenadines suffered the most, with damage totaling USD 186.8 million.

“I was heartbroken and traumatised when I first saw everything around me, walking from Chatham to the airport. The trees, galvanize, wood, tanks, concrete, electric poles, containers everything was destroyed and displaced.”

– Bertrand Sailly, Sparrows Beach Club & Restaurant

Rallying Together: Response and Assistance

The response to this disaster was swift and multifaceted. The French Navy was one of the first on the scene with 300 tonnes of relief supplies, along with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and World Central Kitchen who brought hot meals and water to the island every day for a month. The immediate relief included food supplies, water, medicine and emergency shelters. Private individuals and companies from around the region also stepped up to help. From Martinique to Barbados, Caribbean neighbours mobilised, showing the region’s solidarity with the Grenadine islands.

Amidst the destruction, stories of resilience and community spirit shone brightly. Union Island resident, kitesurfing champion and owner of JT Pro Centre – Jérémie Tronet – played a pivotal role in relief efforts. Tronet used his social media platform to put a global spotlight on Union Island, with viewers all over the world witnessing the crisis and the needs of the local population firsthand. He immediately set up a GoFundMe fundraising account and started to mobilise relief efforts from Martinique. At the time of going to print, the GoFundMe account has raised over 340,000 Euros.

“Clearing roads and helping the injured were the immediate needs, so that’s why we sent doctors, medical supplies, fire fighters, chain saws, bolt cutters and gloves. Obviously food, water, tarpaulins were crucial as well. Next on the priority list was communications and power – setting up Starlinks and distributing solar generators.”

– Jérémie Tronet, JT Pro Centre

“The very few whose structures remained standing, opened their doors to help others. Alizeè Sailly opened Bougainvillea Hotel to the community as a shelter, a source of food, clothing and water, and as a hotspot for STARLINK Wi-Fi, for everyone in need of assistance.” – Bertrand Sailly, Sparrows Beach Club & Restaurant

Picking up the pieces

Clean up of the debris is now complete. Tonnes of materials including galvanised sheets from roofs have been shipped to Trinidad as scrap metal. Many homes now have roofs, most have electricity restored and businesses are trying to reopen and reestablish themselves. For some, the rebuilding process will take a lot longer.

“I am so happy we have our roof back after months under tarpaulin. We can’t open our shop yet, but we are taking orders and delivering what we can

– Elizabeth McIntosh, Union Island resident and business owner

Efforts are focused not only on restoring infrastructure but also on fortifying it to withstand future climate challenges. This is one of the areas that organisations like IOM are trying to contribute to:

“We will train about 300 households on better rebuilding techniques to make their self-built homes more resilient to future weather events.”

– Martina Cilkova, IOM Shelter and Settlement Coordinator in the Caribbean. “For me, there’s nothing left to restore – everything is gone so I have to start from scratch. I’m looking at rebuilding my house now, and making it “hurricane friendly” –stronger to withstand hurricanes in the future, with guidance and support from friends and experts from other Caribbean islands. It’s a long road ahead, but we will make it, and we will come back stronger than ever” –Glenroy Adams, Grenadines Dive

Open for Business

Many were quick to put together what they could, eager to serve the yachting industry that they are heavily reliant on.

“Thanks to all the help I’ve received, I’m planning to reopen in January/ February 2025, and trying my best to get everything under control before then. Let’s pray for the best, as hurricane Beryl made everything feel impossible at times and it all seems like a daily fight. But, with great support, we can all get through this.”

– Bertrand Sailly, Sparrows Beach Club & Restaurant

“I ordered a container full of kite surfing equipment shipped to Union Island. I don’t know when we will be able to rebuild the kite centre, but we’re open for business from a tent on the beach”

– Jérémie Tronet, JT Pro Centre

“I still don’t have electricity because I need three phase power with three transformers to run the compressors to fill my dive tanks. Right now I have to go to Petite Martinique and Carriacou to fill them, which is costly in gas to go there and back by boat. I’ve been taking guests from Cannouan, and have been speaking with all the mega yachts and the charter catamarans. We are open for business.”

– Glenroy Adams, Grenadines Dive

“We are open for business this season, welcoming and providing services to the cruise ships, and we have rebuilt our facilities at Mayreau. Bougainvilla Hotel and Restaurant on Union Island are open, but we are still operating as a shelter, so we are trying to service visitors and the local community at the same time.”

– Jean-Marc Sailly, Wind & Sea

Paradise is Still Paradise

Despite the devastation, the southern Grenadine islands retain their timeless natural beauty. With the passing of the rainy season, the hillsides, left barren and depleted, are green again, offering a sense of serenity and hope. The pristine waters of the Tobago Cays shimmer in turquoise hues, with the turtles darting along the reefs as they always have.

“The beauty of the islands is unchanged. Mayreau and the Tobago Cays and their beaches are still as stunning as always, so there’s little or no impact for people visiting by boat. The guys grilling lobsters and selling drinks are back, and ready to welcome visitors”

– Jérémie Tronet, JT Pro Centre

What you can do

Tourism remains a cornerstone of the Grenadines’ economy, and visitors can play an integral role in its recovery. Although many of the hotels and restaurants need more time to rebuild, the southern Grenadines is still open for business, especially for the yachting industry.

The islands’ recovery is a testament to the resilience of its people and the enduring allure of the Grenadines. By visiting and supporting the island, travellers can become part of this inspiring journey of renewal, proving that even after the storm, paradise prevails.

“If people really want to help out and get involved, I suggest they go for a walk around the islands, get lost, find people, talk to them and see how they can help. Rather than helping the first person you see, by taking a walk you might meet someone more isolated that you can help in a meaningful way – perhaps helping to fix a window or something tangible that they need” –

“People can help by coming back! Support the region by enjoying the region. Buying vegetables from the vendors, going to the Tobago Cays, buying grilled lobster from the guys on the beach, going diving and snorkeling etc. Don’t give it to us for nothing – let us work for it” – Glenroy Adams, Grenadines Dive
