A Ferry Good Time
Regular and efficient ferry services for freight and passengers operate between Kingstown, St. Vincent and the Southern Grenadines with the Jaden Sun Fast Ferry, MV Gem Star and MV Barracouda. The Admiral and Bequia Express ferries (for cars as well) operate between Bequia and Kingstown, with Bequia Express also offering services to the Southern Grenadines.

• Visiting yachts must complete clearance formalities at a designated port of entry before docking at any other anchorage. • With Q flag hoisted, only the captain should go ashore with: Three crew lists, clearance from the previous port, passports and ship’s papers. • Boats must clear out of an official port. • Private vessels may pay a

Vibrant and bustling urban centres contrast with pristine and untouched swathes of mountains filled with waterfalls, and uninhabited island gems. Fast ferries and slow sailing. Celebspotting on Mustique and turtlespotting in the Tobago Cays. Humble roasted breadfruit shares a plate with exquisite grilled lobster. The hype and splendour of Vincy Mas (our carnival) and the calm of lapping waves on an empty beach. Hiking to the peak of La Soufrière volcano and scuba diving to the depths of Mayreau Gardens. Despite the diversity of the islands, each with their own character and customs, Vincentians share a common identity and strong national pride CHARTERING in what unites them.
One flag with its vibrant colours, easily recognised from a distance, fluttering atop a sailboat’s mast, wherever in the world the winds take it. The blue represents the sky and the sea. The gold is for
warmth, the bright spirit of the people and the golden sands of the Grenadines. The green represents the lush vegetation of St. Vincent and the enduring vitality of the people.

It is incredible that such a small nation boasts five airports. This is in response to the splattering of islands separated by ocean and the need for connectivity. The new Argyle International CHARTERING Airport now connects mainland
St. Vincent with the world, with direct flights to the UK, USA, Canada and around the Caribbean. This increased airlift has resulted in new hotel development with brands like Sandals and Holiday
Inn due to open in 2024. Bequia, Mustique, Canouan and Union Island also have airports offering convenient connections from the mainland and island-hopping options.

A Go-Getter Stepping out in Faith by Vynette Frederick I drove onto the beautiful grounds of the Beachcombers Hotel and marveled at how this once 6 room Inn had become this now 56-room, award-winning standard bearer for Boutique Hotel comfort, service and excellence on Saint Vincent; and the simple answer is Flora Gunn née Richardson. Flora greeted me with a warm smile and twinkle in her eye. She is the definition of casual chic, managing to look at once stylish and comfortable as she ushered me in to her office for our chat. Who is this tall and striking woman, with an air of calm, urgent, confidence? She is, a true example of a real woman of business. She exudes quiet strength, dignity, and has a wonderful sense of humour. To hear her tell it, Flora Richardson as she then was, is the last of eight children 6 boys and 2 girls, born in Kingstown in a one storey modest home, where Gunsam’s Business is now located. She attended the Kingstown Preparatory School and then the Girls’ High School where she enjoyed

Math and Netball, playing in tournaments against visiting teams to Saint Vincent. She describes her childhood as a happy one. While her sister Norma spent her time indoors, Flora got up to hijinks with her brothers, who taught her to drive – first a jeep and then a truck. Everyone had their chores to do, polishing floors and furniture, and Flora was no different. She learnt hard work and manners from her parents, who were strict and loving. After High School, Flora entered the workforce at Barclays where she started as a teller and worked her way up to doing entries on something called the Waste. She met her husband Richard “Dick” Gunn at the Bank where he spent a great deal of time in the line changing five-dollar notes (no doubt he was captivated by her radiance). She credits her future husband with convincing her to enter the Carnival Queen Competition in 1962. “He organized everything.” And she smiles at the memory of how, in her “naive stupidity”, she took to the stage, wondering how she had gotten herself into this.
She walked away with the crown and entered married life with her husband. They welcomed three children Anthony, Cheryl and Beverley and soon her husband’s posting as a Diplomat at the British High Commission saw her and her youngest daughter heading off to the UK, where her sense of style and organizational skill made her a credit to the office, and all that the Commission did while in the UK. Today she teaches her grandchildren the same values she learnt and chuckles as she says, “To tell them about life, I take them shopping, and when they can’t escape from the car, I explain the importance of having faith, the sacrament, (she’s Anglican), good values, and, I keep it real. I tell them about businesses that went under because of lack of commitment of owners. They can’t get away when you take them driving you see.” After her husband’s tragic death, Flora said she couldn’t crawl up into a ball and die herself, she had her children and the Beachcombers Hotel, at the time six rooms, to figure out what to do with. She threw herself into work and placed socializing on the back burner. She battled banks and naysayers, and the weight of managing it all. It wasn’t easy. Over thirty years, facing every challenge as a widow with her children, wanting to improve the hotel, she pushed forward. Adding rooms and a conference room, improving the pool, expanding the restaurant, and improving the rooms. She persevered and her astute business sense and never-give-up attitude has yielded great results. She was the first person with a sauna in Saint Vincent and offered spa services to women and men. She also taught yoga and fitness. Flora’s taste and obvious skill in interior design can be seen all over the hotel. Every room has a touch of that “je ne sais quoi” which adds to its appeal – some classy detail that makes you happy to be there. Surprisingly, Flora loves the entire process of building, and recounts the nonplussed look on her builder’s face, and those of his workmen who couldn’t believe the extent of her involvement with them to ensure that her vision for the hotel is brought to life. Be it conference room, or additional wing, Flora sees it, conceptualizes what she wants, and she gets it done. Beachcombers is a lovely property sitting on maybe an acre of land. It was a country beach house that was developed bit by bit, wing by wing over the years. Now, with her daughters Cheryl and Beverley doing quite a bit remotely, they manage a staff numbering forty-six, five of whom have been with Beachcombers for over two decades and counting.

Flora now tries to find more time for herself, to enjoy what improvements have come over the years. Maintenance is an everyday thing, and she is constantly active, still with an eye for detail and interior design, welcoming visitors and a favourite with her staff. She is happy with what she and her family along with their staff have built. She takes some credit for their success, but gives, “All Thanks and Praise to God my dear.”

Comprising some 32 islands and smaller cays, stretching 32 miles from St. Vincent in the north to Petit St. Vincent in the south, the Grenadines have long been home to a rich tradition of seafaring. To this day, sailing remains an integral part of everyday life for most islanders. As such, this special part of the world is tailor-made for safe but adventurous cruising all yearround. St. Vincent and the Grenadines has always touted its fabulous sailing, snorkeling and day-chartering, but it is not widely known for its spectacular diving. Throughout the island chain you can snorkel through a “bat cave,” dive over geothermal vents, or take a night dive on a wreck with hundreds of lobsters. Visitors often feel so at home that they return year after year, and divers return to see rare seahorses, pipefish and frogfish.

Mainland St. Vincent offers stunning diving with dive operators at Blue Lagoon, opposite Young Island at Villa, Paradise Beach and Richmond Vale. The impressive landscape of St. Vincent continues underwater with dramatic wall dives full of black coral and azure sponges steeply shelving away to volcanic sand. St. Vincent has been a well-kept secret among divers interested in photographing our unusual marine life. The abundance and variety of rarelyseen creatures earned St. Vincent the nickname Critter Capital of the Caribbean and the island
was voted as having the best Caribbean diving by Sport Diver magazine. As spectacular as the diving is in St. Vincent, the Grenadines are not to be outdone, with easily accessible wrecks and pristine reefs full of nooks and crannies to search for lobster, cleaner shrimp and eels. The island of Bequia has two dive shops both located on the Belmont Walkway. The close proximity of the dive sites makes diving easy and rewarding. Bequia’s leeward coastline is fringed by a sloping reef where divers may find themselves

surrounded by schools of creole wrasse, blue tangs and dozens of other curious species. Heading further south, fabulous diving and snorkeling is available in the turquoise waters around Mustique, Canouan, the Tobago Cays, Mayreau, Union, Palm and Petit St. Vincent (PSV), with dive shops in Mustique, Union and PSV. Snorkeling within the Tobago Cays Marine Park almost guarantees you’ll find hawksbill
and green turtles. You can float lazily on the surface and watch them grazing on the turtle grass while keeping an eye out for southern stingrays and eagle rays that pass by. More adventurous divers and snorkelers will head over the horseshoe reef to glimpse nurse and reef sharks or dive on the World War I gun-boat wreck, Purini, near Saline Bay, Mayreau. Black Point Park Black Point Park is home to the unique Jasper Tunnel. This tunnel is over 300 feet long and links Grand Sable with Byera Bay. The tunnel was ordered built by the British and constructed by slave labour around 1815 to provide an access route and storage for sugar exports. The black sand beach and picnic area is thickly vegetated with coconut trees and is one of the most popular recreational sites on the island.
La Soufrière Volcano
La Soufrière is a stratovolcano with recorded eruptions dating back to 1718, with notable eruptions occurring in 1812, 1902, 1979 and the most recent in 2020. There was no loss of life but residents

north of the Rabacca River lost their homes and have been relocated to Orange Hill Estate. Hundreds of houses have been built, as well as two bridges, funded by several entities. The surrounding farms and forests have recovered very quickly. In some areas you wouldn't know there had been an eruption. A National Park, the volcano is restricted by government not because the volcano is still active – it is currently at the lowest volcanic danger level – but because it is very slippery close to the crater and it is also very easy to get lost in this area. Hikes are at your own risk and guides are a must.

La Soufrière Volcano Trail Rising majestically to over 4,000 feet, the 5-6 hour hike starts at 1,200 feet above sea level on the windward side and takes you to about 3,300 feet at the crater. The ascent is about 3.5 miles long and takes about 2 1/2 hours. It starts with a 1/2 hour segment to 'river bed'. Then a pretty tough 45 minutes through a humid, forested trail to 'bench' where there is in fact no bench but this is a much needed rest stop. Next up is a 1/2 hour trek to Jacob's Well which begins to feel cool with the wind on your back. By now you have climed 1,300 feet. The final 45 minute climb to the top is cooler still and your destination is in sight. This is a

day’s journey for energetic hikers, who should leave early in the morning. Hiking the La Soufrière Volcano trail is at your own risk and definitely must be done with a guide.
The Botanic Gardens
Fort Charlotte
Vermont Nature Trail
Completed in 1806, Fort Charlotte is on a ridge 600 feet above the sea, providing a magnificent view across Kingstown and down the Grenadines. Nicely restored with new amenities in 2022 Fort Duvernette. Also known as Rock Fort, this defensive structure was built around 1800 to protect the town of Calliaqua. About 50 yards off Young Island Resort, it still has many of its armaments intact.
Layou Petroglyph Park
Located on 20 acres of land on the outskirts of the capital, Kingstown, the Botanic Gardens are the oldest in the Western Hemisphere.
This trail starts in Buccament Valley and leads through tropical rainforest. There is a chance of seeing (or hearing) the St. Vincent Parrot and the Whistling Warbler, both unique to St. Vincent and strictly protected. This is also the habitat for the House Wren, the common Black Hawk, Cocoa Thrush, the Crested Hummingbird, Redcapped Green Tanager and Green Heron to name a few.
A cultural landmark with an indigenous petroglyph, the Rutland River and a forested trail. The site is pre-Columbian in origin, of unknown age. The Layou petroglyph most likely dates to between AD300 and AD600.
Belmont Lookout & Montreal Gardens This lookout provides visitors with the opportunity to view one of St. Vincent’s most productive and picturesque landscapes. There is a viewing platform, washrooms and interpretive signage. Just north of Mesopotamia are the Montreal Gardens which are a wonderful place to see an amazing array of tropical blooms.

St. Vincent’s beaches are all public. In the south, Indian Bay, Villa, Young Island and Blue Lagoon beaches have soft, golden sand and border many of the island’s hotels and restaurants making it convenient for ordering food and drinks. The best snorkeling and safest swimming is along the west coast. The dramatic windward coast beaches have black sand as a result of volcanic lava flows and the sea is often quite rough with dangerous undercurrents.

These two white sand beaches, divided by a small hilly projection, are easily accessible. Both offer good snorkeling and provide lovely views of Young Island with a string of places offering great dining and entertainment.
A picturesque bay and a good diving spot with reliable line handlers available to help secure yachts. Customs and Immigration can be cleared here between 4pm and 6pm (up to 7pm during the busier winter season).

Surrounded by palm trees, with a lovely beach. Excellent for swimming and it’s a very pleasant anchorage. This is now a port of entry with Customs and Immigration on site at the the Blue Lagoon Marina, a full service marina offering 20 slips and 4 alongside berths with water and 110/220 electricity with 50 Hz.
With its 40-foot deep reef and array of brightly coloured fish, is a snorkeler’s dream. While usually a good anchorage, especially on the eastern half of the bay, the northerly swells in the winter months can cause difficulties. Customs and Immigration clearance is also available in Chateaubelair.

Petit and Grand Byahaut Two small bays where diving and snorkeling are superb. At Dinosaur Head (face of Byahaut point) you will find a 120-foot wall covered in sponges, seafans and coral.
Troumakar Bay This small well-protected bay, with room for only a handful of yachts, has some mooring posts on the beach. There is good snorkeling along the shore.
Buccament Bay A well-protected, very calm bay with an excellent anchorage shelf in the eastern corner close to the beach. There is exceptionally good snorkeling here. Sandals Beaches Resort is currently being built here.

Perfect for Picnics
A fascinating mangrove swamp which attracts many visitors. It is a very popular recreational and entertainment spot. The gazebos are great for birthdays and other functions.

Facilities include gazebos, bar, shower and washrooms, children’s play area, craft centre and fire pits. There is a small entrance fee. A 5-minute walk behind the old arrowroot factory in Owia are 4 waterfalls which are the beginning of a 1/4 mile of solid volcanic rock formation, through which the river cascades into many waterfalls.

On the windward side of the island there are a number of beautiful black sand beaches with facilities. Because of strong undercurrents, most windward beaches are not recommended for swimming.
Brighton Salt Pond
On the northeastern coast, close to the Carib village of Owia. The 2-hour drive runs along the scenic coastline. This unusual gift of nature consists of a huge sea bathing pool enclosed by lava peaks and ridges. The pounding waves crash into this barrier and
The anchorage here, lying in clear water, is a favourite with yachtspeople. Anchor with care, as the current sweeps both ways and the centre of the cut is 65 feet deep. Moorings are available, but stay clear of the sea bed close to Young Island itself. The restaurant at Young Island

Keshawn Cupid
Bringing Markets to Vincentian Farmers by Vynette Frederick I bumped into Keshawn Cupid on a flight to St. Vincent from Miami. He was in the company of one of his business partners Peter Guidry Jr. and he was a man on a mission. The Company SVG Export and Trading Inc. is their brainchild and Keshawn‘s vision is to develop a platform where every farmer has access to markets where they will be able to sell their produce. He wants farmers to see and approach farming as a true PROFESSION. Born of Vincentian parents Pastor Martin Cupid and Veolant Cupid, the church, the home and the land all played important roles in his upbringing. The third of four children, Keshawn credits his parents with helping him to understand how fundamental growing what you eat is to any community. While a student of Kingstown Preparatory School and then the St. Vincent Grammar School his chores saw him in the banana field in Lowmans Windward. After High School Keshawn migrated to the US where he joined the U.S. Navy and continued to pursue his education. Upon early retirement he started a consulting company where he helps other companies to increase their efficiency and productivity using a process called “Lean Six Sigma.” Today, Keshawn who is married, with three kids of his own, splits his time between St. Vincent and

California. His desire to help farmers in St. Vincent, and to grow the business of farming to benefit all of his customers in the US, has seen his SVG Export and Trading Company shipping container loads of breadfruit and dasheen to the US using a technique that guarantees no spoilage. It has been a work in progress and Keshawn, who lives by the mantra, “let your handshake be as good as a binding contract,” ensures that farmers who provide their produce, get paid on time. They have confidence in the company and appreciate just how hands on Keshawn and his business partners have been. The company has now diversified to include Sea Moss to their export list. Their Vincentian branded Sea Moss Gel is amazing! To hear Keshawn tell it, brain drain takes a lot of our human resource away from the country. He sees inspiring farmers in St. Vincent as one way of combating the exodus. “We are capable of competing from a quality standpoint. We are looking to supply niche markets with quality products to get the true taste of the Caribbean.” Something tells me that this foray into farming is just the start of what will be an amazing journey for Keshawn, his business partners, and his company.

Shopping in St. Vincent The new covered market in Kingstown is a good place to start, and Saturday mornings are busiest. Brimming with life and authenticity, the market doesn’t merely provide you with fresh produce, but with a real Vincy experience – every purchase is a transaction with a person, and each person has a comment or story to share, if you have the time. And if you’re not sure how to prepare and cook something like breadfruit, just ask! Chances are you’ll get several recipes from the vendors. The adjacent Cruise Ship Complex has docking facilities for yachts as well as large passenger ships. Here you will also find a

number of shops carrying a range of local art and craft. The regular ferryboats that link St. Vincent to the Grenadine islands provide a key supply chain that allows stores in St. Vincent to offer a convenient inter-island delivery service of a wide range of fresh product, groceries and luxury items, including wines and spirits. Shopping here definitely needs more planning but it can be fun. It’s a great chance to live like a local! Shoppers can conveniently place their order via telephone or email and pay by credit card. Young Island Young Island is a 13-acre island where a Carib chief once resided and, as the story goes, gave it up to Sir William Young for a white horse. Little did he know that his island would in future years become Young Island Resort, a tropical garden. You’ll soon find that life is casual and dress is informal. The Windward Side This side of the island is the most fertile, and it was here in the 18th and 19th centuries that several of Bequia’s nine sugar plantations were situated. Located at ‘The Mill’ is the home of Grenadine Wild Sea Salt. They host tours, talks, tastings and private events around all things culinary and creative. They have restored the ancient ruins of The Old Sugar Mill which dates back to the late 17th century, set in a tranquil, park-like setting with their 140 patented solar evaporation stills. As part of Spring Plantation – where sugar, indigo, arrowroot, cassava and copra were once produced – it is most likely the oldest structure on the island. Spring and Industry at Park Beach, ‘Brother’ King nurtures endangered hawksbill turtles of all sizes.
Port Elizabeth This town is nestled along the waterfront of Admiralty Bay and rises into the surrounding hills. A number of brightly coloured shops, houses, restaurants, small hotels and guest-houses complete the picturesque scene.
Coastal Trail leading to Princess Margaret beach. The latter part of this coastal trail featured on the preceeding pages, damaged during high seas in 2018, has been impresssively restored. At the end of Princess Margaret beach there is another trail over the hill to Lower Bay just beyond.

While wandering around the harbour, look out for the ‘House of Parliament’ – the local name given to the shaded waterfront area under the almond trees, where the island’s talented artists and craftspeople display their wares and taxis assemble to collect and deposit passengers.
As you make your way west along the winding southside road you’ll eventually come to the colourful fishing community of Paget Farm, where there are beautiful views across the sea to the uninhabited islands of Petit Nevis, site of the old whaling station, and Isle a Quatre. The James F. Mitchell Airport which was opened in 1992 is also nearby.

Friendship Bay
A delightful continuous coastal path that meanders along the south shore of Admiralty Bay, with a number of inviting little bars and restaurants all along the way. Continuing on from the walkway is the Princess Margaret
On the south coast is Friendship Bay and St. Hilaire Point, where many a Bequia boat has taken shape along the shores. Indeed the famous Friendship Rose that offers old time schooner tours to the Tobago Cays was built here.

Bequia Heritage Museums The Bequia Heritage Museum complex in St. Hillary, Friendship was officially opened on December 15th 2020. Its completion represented the fulfilment of nearly thirty years of planning, fundraising and aspiration by the Trustees of the Bequia Heritage Foundation, spearheaded by the late Pat Mitchell. The spacious, airy Boat Museum explores Bequia’s famed maritime heritage, including shipbuilding and whaling. Among the exhibits is a traditional Amerindian dugout canoe, there to represent the chosen mode of transport and exploration by those skilled and fearless indigenous people who first journeyed from South America into the Caribbean islands thousands of years ago. Next door is the newlycompleted air-conditioned Annex, with its fine display of Amerindian pottery and artefacts - almost all found on Bequia, together with
a selection of historic material dating from the European period of Bequia’s settlement. A fascinating in-depth PowerPoint presentation in the Annexe Gallery augments the displays in both buildings, and fleshes out the arc of Bequia’s unique 1,700 year history with maps, charts, commentary and contemporary documentation. The presentation also includes a selection of rare early photographs from the time when ship-building and whaling were the lifeblood of the island’s economy, and which give a remarkable glimpse into the island’s not-so-distant past. Reproductions of rare antique Bequia maps and a selection of books and postcards are also available to purchase at the Museum. Dedicated and knowledgeable Museum Representatives are on hand to welcome you and show you around. Allow plenty of time to take in all of the exhibits and

One of the best harbours in the Caribbean because of its deep protected ‘U’ shape, calm, clear waters and ample depth, allowing large boats to come close to shore for maintenance. When anchoring stay clear of the ferry route to the main jetty. Newly opened at press time The Cocktail Lab with an idyllic location in Admiralty Bay promises to be a winner.
A popular anchorage and a glorious stretch of beach with a convenient dinghy dock if you are arriving by water taxi. Generally calm with perfect swimming conditions – yachts are required to anchor at least 200 yards off shore for the safety of swimmers. Jack’s Beach Bar is a favourite hangout and the perfect spot for lunch – linger on to catch the sunset with a few of their cocktail concoctions!
A long stretch of powdery white sand with crystal clear water, excellent for swimming, snorkeling and sunbathing with beach chairs available for rent. A stretch of on-shore reef provides an area of shallow pools along the shoreline making it especially suitable for children. Keegan’s Beachside Bar & Restaurant is situated in the middle of the bay and is a good choice for food and drinks. Further along the beach is De Reef Restaurant and Bar, and tucked away in Lower Bay village, you’ll find Dawn’s Café serving tasty local dishes.

On the south side, Friendship Bay is a sheltered, crescent shaped bay with lots of shade. It’s a good alternative anchorage for yachts and offers great snorkeling, scuba diving and windsurfing conditions. The stylish Bequia Beach Hotel is located here – enquire about their day passes, starting at US$75, and take advantage of the hotel’s first class facilities.
If you can find it, Hope Bay on the east coast is good for beachcombing and a great spot for picnics with a group of friends. Pounded by the Atlantic surf, it’s also good for body surfing but only if you’re a strong swimmer. Beware of strong undercurrents and be sure to stay within your depth.
On the eastern side of the island this stretch of often deserted coastline is shaded by wooded hills and countless coconut palms – good conditions for kitesurfing and windsurfing and perfect for picnics! Crescent Beach on Industry Bay is the best for swimming and snorkeling on this side of the island.

Mayreau’s 1.5 square miles represents a unique small island society of 400 residents. The mail boat, carrying much needed supplies, provides essential and affordable transport for residents to and from St. Vincent and other islands. Sparrow’s Aquaponic Farm Renowned in the Southern Grenadines as a top fisherman, Bertrand Sailly catches most of the fish served each day at his Sparrows Beach Club and Restaurant. So, when the pandemic struck, he came up with a plan to make his restaurant self-sufficient in other produce he needs in large quantities – fresh herbs and salads.

Modelled on the self-sustainable system of aquaponics, Bertrand’s farm has a pond where tilapia fish are fed with the peelings and scraps from the restaurant. The water from the pond is then fed through the roots of the plants he grows, which act as a filter and send clean water back into the fish-pond. Since the plants thrive on the nutrient rich water from the fish, there is no need for any chemical fertilisers or pesticides, thereby providing 100% organic, perfectly healthy food for his guests and his family - including various kinds of lettuce, several varieties of basil, plus other herbs like dill and mint.
This project has been an absolute joy and labour of love for Bertrand. First and foremost, it is a family affair, with his son Sabastian working alongside him. Secondly, the farm is idyllically located high up in the hills of Union Island, with an amazing view of the entire Grenadines. It is a very quiet and peaceful place, disturbed only by the buzzing of the wild bees happily pollinating his tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, aubergines, sweet peppers and even strawberries. Not only has Bertrand found a reliable source of organic produce, he has also discovered a new hobby that he loves.
Sparrow’s Beach Club & Restaurant Sparrow’s Beach Club has made several improvements with the addition of awnings to give plenty of shady seating on the beach. The owner, Bertrand Sailly, well known Union Island businessman and fisherman of lore, catches excellent local fish and prepares it beautifully. His smoked marlin is absolutely delicious and he presents a daily fresh catch - live lobster from the pond, or one of the chef’s specialties like tuna sashimi, carpaccio and tartare. Other tasty dishes on the menu are: conch sauté flambéd with Pernod Ricard; fish fillet in sea urchin sauce and conch pasta. For dessert, you can indulge in Sparrow’s famous fried ice cream, crème brulée, lemon pie, banana flambée and chocolate mousse.

From the Nest to the Sea Witnessing the Journey of Leatherback Sea Turtles at Sparrow’s Beach Bertrand Sailly had the opportunity to capture amazing photos as a leatherback sea turtle came up to nest on the beach in front of Sparrow’s Beach Bar and Restaurant in Union Island. Then, about 2 months later, the hatchlings emerged and Bertrand and his team at Sparrow’s watched as the little turtles made their way to the water. The hatchlings have a difficult journey ahead of them as they migrate thousands of miles to their feeding grounds in the temperate waters off the east coasts of the United States and Canada. They’ll evade crabs, birds, fish and sharks as they spend a day and half in a state of frenzied swimming trying to get to the safety of deep water, where they’ll grow to almost 6 feet long, and reach weights of up to 1,000 pounds — the largest of any sea turtle species. Unfortunately, very few hatchlings survive until the almost

2 decades before they reach maturity – just an estimated 1 in 1,000 make it to adulthood. Historically, the odds were even worse for them as sea turtles, including leatherbacks, were killed for their meat and their eggs were collected for consumption. Happily, leatherback turtles are presently protected at all stages of life in many countries, including St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Once they reach adulthood,
leatherback sea turtles will live an average of 45 years with males staying at sea for their entire lives and the females making the journey back to the beach of their birth to lay their own eggs. Leatherback sea turtles remain at risk across the globe, but with a bit of luck, the team at Sparrow’s will welcome back one of the recent hatchlings some years into the future as she returns to lay in a nest of her own.
