History
Originally inhabited by Amerindians before being settled by the English in 1627, Barbados is the only Caribbean island that remained constantly under British rule until 1966 when we gained independence. It is no wonder the island is affectionately known as “Little England”. Over the course of the last four centuries, historical events and a potent mix of African, British and other influences have bequeathed a rich cultural heritage. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Barbados was established as the nucleus of the Trans-Atlantic trade and served as headquarters for both the British Royal Navy and Army. Bridgetown is home to the third oldest Parliament in the Commonwealth; a statue of Lord Nelson which pre-dates its counterpart in London’s Trafalgar Square by some 30 years; and the 350-year-old Jewish Synagogue, the oldest to be found anywhere in the entire western hemisphere. Interestingly, Barbados is the only place that George Washington ever visited outside the United States. St. Nicholas Abbey is the oldest Jacobean house in the western hemisphere. Bearing testament to the extraordinarily rich history of this small island are thirteen wonderful museums and two beautifully preserved plantation houses: The Barbados Museum, Nidhe Israel Synagogue and Museum, Arlington Museum, Cricket Legends of Barbados Museum, Barbados Concorde Experience, George Washington House and Museum, The Museum of Parliament and National Heroes Gallery, The Folk Museum at Foursquare Rum Factory, Folkstone Underwater Park and Museum, Mallalieu Motor Museum, Springvale Eco-Heritage Museum, St. Nicholas Abbey and Sunbury House. SAFETY Barbados is considered to be a safe place but always be as cautious as you would be at home. Exercise common sense about venturing into lonely locations; secure your valuables; never leave your belongings unattended on the beach or in full view in a locked car; always leave your key at front desk as lost keys mean insecurity. Barbados has never had a shark attack. The most common sharks are Nurse Sharks, which do not attack. There are no poisonous spiders or snakes but a centipede bite, though not poisonous, can be very painful.

Barbados is close to the equator and the sun can cause severe damage to the skin so be sure to use a good sun screen and sit under an umbrella. Check that coconut palms do not have brown coconuts or drooping brown branches that are apt to fall before sitting underneath. If you are stuck by the sharp spines of the black sea urchins found on the reef, although painful, they are harmless and will eventually dissolve and be absorbed by the body. Only pull them out if they are clearly protruding.

Barbados pepper sauce is made with scotch bonnet peppers

Barbados has a high standard of tasty preserves. Topping the list is the famous Bajan Pepper Sauce made predominantly with locally grown scotch bonnet peppers and fresh turmeric, which are both very good for your health. The marmalades are made with tasty Barbados sugar and seville oranges, grapefruit and limes, sometimes with a dash of Barbados rum. The Barbados mango chutney is a pungent condiment made with green mangos, fresh ginger, garlic, scotch bonnet peppers and Barbados sugar. It is delicious served with cheese, patĂŠ, curry or pelau. Pepper jelly is another favourite. These preserves make wonderful gifts for friends and family back home - a lovely taste of Barbados.

Hot salt fish cakes are usually served with Bajan pepper sauce

Cutters - local Bajan salt breads filled with sliced ham, cheese, flying fish or pork and served with Bajan hot pepper sauce. Salt fish cakes - a mixture of salt fish, seasonings and flour deep fried to a golden brown. Breadfruit - cooked in a variety of ways including pickled, stuffed with corn beef and roasted, mashed into a cou cou, chips or served in a butter sauce. Pepperpot - a dark coloured stew of beef, pork, chicken and a thick sauce made with a derivative of the cassava root known as Cassareep. Cou cou and flying fish in butter sauce is the national dish and is traditionally eaten on Fridays. Traditional Sunday Lunch may include pumpkin soup, roast pork, baked chicken, rice and beef stew, pumpkin fritters, rice and peas, macaroni pie, yam pie, sweet potato pie, pickled green bananas and corn pie.

Brazilian Gem Designs Different by Design Brazilian Gem Designs, now celebrating fifteen years at the Colony Club Hotel on Barbados’ west coast, is the brainchild of John Beale and his Brazilian wife Leila, who is a member of the renowned Gemological Institute of America (GIA). John and Leila’s jewellery background began over 25 years ago in Rio de Janeiro through a close relationship with the De Castro Family, owners of the traditional Brazilian company Gregory & Sheehan. Gregory & Sheehan was formed over 75 years ago by former managers of Cartier and Mappin & Webb. They were selected by the Brazilian Government for presenting a gift of special aquamarine jewellery to Queen Elizabeth at her coronation in 1952. John and Leila extended their Brazilian links in 1997 through an association with Hans Stern, known as the Lord of Gemstones and the founder of Brazil’s most famous jewellery company, H. STERN. They were appointed the first agent in the world for H.STERN. Unlike many jewellery outlets, most of Brazilian Gem Designs’ output is 18 karat and handmade. They also assist clients with designs and make pieces especially for them. Leila Beale says “Brazilian Gem Designs is art, where the gems are selected and romanced, as opposed to impersonal mass production of repetitive jewellery made from castings”. She believes that “a piece of jewellery should be something special and lasting”. Leila says that her shop really caters to a niche market and to those people who want a shopping experience in pleasant surroundings where they can satisfy their dreams, emotions and romantic feelings. She is pleased to hear clients say that they first visited Brazilian Gems for its reputation, but the reason for them returning is due to value.

Mosaic Art Our cover artist, Melanie Blomgren was born, and grew up, in Sweden where she went to art college, worked in the fashion industry for 5 years and moved to Barbados in 1990. Here, she worked in the restaurant business for 15 years during which time she developed a fascination for the many colourful characters she encountered in the island’s vibrant nightlife scene – the expressions, painted faces, the outfits, the stories and the humour. During the daylight hours, Barbados' equally unique and colourful wildlife made a deep impression too – the monkeys, the birds and the improbable flying fish. After the birth of her daughter in 2002, she turned her hand to mosaics. Melanie’s pieces, like the ancient mosaics, often involve portraits of people and depictions of scenery. Where she departs with ancient tradition is in the way her mosaics often rise up in three dimensions, and in the wit infused in her work. This underlying sense of humour has always guided her pieces, as it has her life.

Every Sunday, year round, the Barbados National Trust organizes morning and afternoon hikes in scenic areas of Barbados. All hikes start at 6am and 3:30pm, except the hike closest to the full moon which is at 5:30pm. There is such a variety of diving experiences on offer in Barbados that any keen scuba diver or underwater photographer should leave the island knowing that their dives have not only been worthwhile, but challenging, fascinating, rewarding and, most importantly, enjoyable. There are rare species of fish such as seahorse and frogfish, along with schools of common reef fish like snappers, yellow goatfish and creole wrasse. Barbados is also home to many large pelagic fish such as barracuda, and various species of jacks, tarpon and mackerel. Sting rays, eagle rays and many eels are common residents, ready to dazzle even the most worldly divers, plus the occasional sightings of manta rays. Barbados undoubtedly has the best collection of wrecks in the Caribbean. Standing above all others, quite literally, is the SS Stavronikita, a 365 foot long freighter which was purposely sunk in 1978. She was so skillfully sunk that she lies upright, intact on a sandy bed with her keel resting at 130 feet. This impressive wreck needs 5 or 6 dives to see all of it and is the most often re-dived site in Barbados. The picturesque Carlisle Bay lies just south of Bridgetown and is the resting place of six wrecks of varying age and size. The whole area has been made into a marine park and is one of the few places where divers and snorkelers can access the wrecks from the beach.

They also make regular visits to the wrecks of the Stavronikita, Pamir and Carlisle Bay. Exploring Barbados With so much interest and variety packed into a small, neatly packaged space, Barbados provides some wonderful sightseeing opportunities and a chance to interact with our people–considered to be amongst the friendliest in the world! The island offers a compelling range of scenic surprises, a fascinating history and a rich architectural heritage. A mere 21 miles long by 14 miles at its widest point, you are never more than 20 minutes from the coast, and in many cases, there is usually somewhere else to visit quite close by. Hiring a car is an excellent idea as this allows you to explore at a leisurely pace and take in the sights and attractions that are of particular interest to you. You will find a selection of reputable car hire companies listed in our Getting Around section (pages 110–119). On the following pages we have highlighted a number of our “mustsee” attractions and notable places of interest which we hope will help to guide you as you journey around the island. You will find the fold-out Digicel Road Map which is provided with this publication very useful for selecting and finding the major attractions.
Touring the West & North Holetown, in the parish of St. James, is the site where John Powell landed in 1625 to claim Barbados in the name of England’s King James. Nowadays it is a busy area of hotels, exquisite restaurants, trendy bars and irresistible shops. Shopping in this area has recently been taken up several notches with the opening of the magnificent new Limegrove Lifestyle Centre, a vibrant community for shopping, entertainment and enjoyment, with many of the world’s leading retail brands opening flagship stores there alongside trendy cafés, gourmet food stores and state of the art movie theatres. Just north of Holetown is St. James Parish Church which stands on one of the oldest parcels of consecrated land on the island and is often referred to as "God's acre". Many of the original settlers and a number of prominent Barbadians were laid to rest in the church and adjoining graveyard. The dates on the head stones, vaults and memorial plaques reflect this history.

Continuing north into St. Peter, make a stop at The Shell Gallery, just off Highway 1 in the Gibbes area. They have an abundance of shells from around the world and many other shell related gift items for the shell enthusiast. A short distance along the coast is Mullins Bay – an ideal spot for a swim and a bite to eat at Mullins Beach Bar & Restaurant. As you head further north you’ll come to Speightstown, once a fort and thriving port, today it is more a fishing port and commercial centre though much of the 19th century architecture and charm still remains. It was often referred to as “Little Bristol” because of the trading connections with Bristol in England. For an interesting glimpse into the history of Speightstown, visit Arlington House Museum. As you continue north along the coast, pass the exclusive Port St. Charles Marina, you’ll go through the quaint little fishing village of Six Men’s which has produced some of the island’s most skilled boat builders. Interestingly, during the 19th century, whalers set sail from this area – today, fishermen still bring their fresh catches ashore here and sell them at the roadside. The delightful Fish Pot Restaurant located at Little Good Harbour is a wonderful stop for lunch as you explore the north of the island.

If you are looking for a real “local” experience, check out Moontown at Half Moon Fort in St. Lucy. Their lively weekend fish frys are great fun – hang out with the locals in a friendly seaside setting and sample some of the freshest, tastiest fish around. The Animal Flower Cave, located on the rugged cliff tops at the northernmost point of the island, is a large sea cave with several huge chambers filled with pools, unusual rock formations and a few sea anemones. An informal café serves cold drinks and sandwiches and there are guides who will walk you through the cave. There are some wonderful photo opportunities to be had along the rugged north eastern coastline, particularly at Little Bay and Cove Bay. The Barbados Wildlife Reserve is set amidst a lush Mahogany grove where you can mingle with free roaming monkeys, turtles, deer, otters, mongoose and many other animals. There is also a walk-in bird aviary and iguana sanctuary. Just next door, Grenade Hall Forest & Signal Station houses many interesting artefacts, including
A wonder of Barbados not to be missed. Located in the parish of St. Lucy, at the most northerly tip of the island, the coastal scenery here is spectacular. The cave originally got its name from the sea anemones found in its many rock pools. Steps lead down into the cave through an opening in the cliff. Here, the view from the naturally formed “windows” out to the sea and the pounding surf are simply awesome, so don’t forget your camera. The Pirates Tavern located on the cliff top, serves delicious fresh Bajan Salt Bread cutters (sandwiches), delicious wraps and a good variety of cold drinks. Open daily 9am–5pm. pre-Colombian tools unearthed during its restoration. The forest has over 2 km of trails winding through many species of trees and plant life – intriguing, informative and educational. Another fascinating stop in the north is St. Nicholas Abbey, thought to be one of only three remaining Jacobean houses in the western hemisphere, and probably the oldest original building on the island. Visitors can also view the restored 1890 steam mill grinding sugar cane in the old syrup factory and sample their special aged rum in the plantation bond where it is handbottled and sold. As you exit Nicholas Abbey, turn left on to Cherry Tree Hill and follow the long avenue of mahogany (not cherry!) trees. As you emerge from the cool canopy of trees, you will be rewarded with a magnificent view of the Scotland District and the entire east coast of the island. The north-eastern parish of St. Andrew is known for its dramatic landscapes and unusual rock formations. The early Scottish settlers thought that the area was much like their native Scotland and named the region the Scotland District.

Away from the Beaches... The central portion of Barbados is exceptionally verdant with rolling hills and mile upon mile of sugar cane fields. St. George and St. Thomas are the only two parishes not bordered by the sea. An essential stop in the lofty hills of St. Thomas is Earthworks Pottery, a spectacular working pottery carrying irresistible, functional works of art. Visitors can tour the work area of the pottery and chat with the potters. On the grounds of the Earthworks Complex you’ll also find the Ins & Outs Gift Emporium, packed with a scrumptious selection of top quality, delightfully packaged Barbadian-made gifts, including an outstanding selection of local preserves, condiments, cakes and confectionaries. Welchman Hall Gully Enchanted Tropical Forest Take a stroll through one of Barbados’ true tropical treasures. Located in the heart of the island, only 2 minutes from Harrison’s Cave, Welchman Hall Gully is a uniquely special place and definitely well worth a visit. Formed centuries ago when the roofs of caves collapsed, it is now filled with an abundance of flourishing, exotic tropical plants and trees. In the peaceful hush of the gully, visitors can often see troops of Green Monkeys frolicking in the trees – a good time to see them is around 10am and 1:30pm when they are usually fed. Legendary horticulturalist, Anthony Hunte has lovingly landscaped an arena-sized natural sink hole into what can only be described as a stunning tropical garden! The Ermy Bourne Highway hugs the east coast from Belleplaine at the northern end, through to Cattlewash. In the area of Belleplaine, stop by Sand Dunes, a friendly, casual roadside bar and restaurant run by Curtis Hall – they serve ice cold drinks and the tastiest fresh grilled fish. Further along the Ermy Bourne Highway is Cattlewash and its wild, Atlantic seascape, with the spectacular clay escarpment of Chalky Mount, rising up dramatically inland. The quaint, seaside village of Bathsheba is just over the hill. In the middle of the bay is Soup Bowl – a favourite surf spot with top surfers from around the world! The view and the lunch at Round House are equally enjoyable! Another first-class stop for lunch on the east coast is the historic Atlantis Hotel in Tent Bay. Having undergone an extensive and thoughtful renovation in recent times, Atlantis still retains its unique charm and famous buffet lunches! Positioned in the hills just above Atlantis, you’ll find Andromeda Gardens.

Andromeda Gardens Like the Greek maiden for whom the gardens are named, Andromeda Botanic Gardens clings to the rocky hillside above Barbados’ spectacular Atlantic coastline. Founded over fifty years ago by world renowned horticulturalist Iris Bannochie, Andromeda’s lush gardens span 6½ acres and host a horticultural collection containing about 650 species from the Caribbean, Tropical Americas, Africa, Asia, Australia and Pacific Islands. Stroll through this quiet garden of Eden, winding your way past flowering trees, palms, orchids, and breathe in the peaceful sea air for a soulsatisfying rejuvenation. Explore meandering, cobbled paths winding around 20 foot heliconias and over lily ponds playing host to the garden’s other inhabitants – lizards, birds, dragonflies, fish catching the light and even the occasional green monkey. The Lively South Historic Bridgetown, the capital, is the heart of the nation, with its splendid churches, ancient Jewish Synagogue, old balconied shop houses, bridges, sugar warehouses and the Neo-Gothic Parliament Buildings, beside the Careenage. The clever use of interactive audio and video along with the exceptional high quality exhibits make a visit to the Museum of Parliament & the National Heroes Gallery a real pleasure. The Nidhe Israel Synagogue and Museum, founded in 1654, is the earliest constructed synagogue still in use in the Americas. Cricket fans will be bowled over at the Cricket Museum, located near the famous Kensington Oval on the outskirts of Bridgetown. It is a well laid out space, filled with interesting cricket memorabilia dating back to the early 1900s.

Visit the Mount Gay Visitor Centre to see how the world’s oldest rum is made - and enjoy the tasting session afterwards! At the Cockspur Beach Club on Brighton beach, you can visit their rum distillery, then relax on the beach with one of their famous Cockspur rum punches! The Historic Garrison Area is home to many of the island’s historic treasures – it’s easy to understand why Bridgetown and its Garrison have now been nominated as a World Heritage Site under UNESCO. The island’s rich heritage and culture are depicted through several informative exhibitions at the Barbados Museum, housed in the old military prison, and beneath the bastion of St. Anne’s Fort is a splendid Cannon Museum. Speightstown Area: In the north, between Little Good Harbour and Speightstown there are a number of beaches with excellent swimming and snorkeling conditions. Between Port St. Charles and the Almond Beach Village Resort there is a road and parking area providing public access to a lovely stretch of beach. Magnificent stretches of beach with glassy, turquoise water; good areas for snorkeling with a variety of watersports on offer. Reed’s Bay and Gibbes are lovely quiet beaches with easy access, but no beach facilities. Mullins is very busy with chair/umbrella rentals – lunch and drinks available from Mullins Beach Bar. Folkstone Marine Reserve: A 2-km stretch of marine reserve. Good snorkeling – equipment and lockers available for rent at the Visitors Centre. Ample shade, picnic tables and parking. Holetown Area: Busy beaches – lots of watersports. Some good choices for lunch in the area: Just Grillin’, Café Indigo, The Tides and The Beach House. In the Limegrove complex, you can grab a light bite to eat from Opa and Relish. Paynes Bay: White sandy beach, a favourite with families and cruise ship passengers. Ideal swimming and snorkeling conditions – you may even spot some turtles. Public access path is next to The Sands which also gives access to the splendid Sandy Lane beach where there is some of the best swimming to be had on the west coast.

Bathsheba: Fresh ocean breezes and pounding surf, a favourite with surfers. Round House and Atlantis are good choices for lunch. CAUTION: The east coast has very dangerous currents – it is NOT safe for swimming!

South-East Coast Big waves – be sure to keep within your depth. Crane Beach: One of the world’s most glorious beaches. Great for boogie boarding. Chair and umbrella rentals. Drinks sold on the beach. Lunch at L’Azure at The Crane Resort features fresh fish and lobster. Cutters of Barbados is located very nearby and they serve delicious sandwiches, pizzas, salads, etc. They will deliver any size picnic to the beach including their special rum punch, beer and wine! Foul Bay: A spectacular stretch of beach with a pleasant shaded area for picnics and easy parking. Exercise extreme caution when swimming as there are strong currents. For security reasons, you are advised to use the northern end where the NCC wardens are present. Bottom Bay: Beautiful, often deserted bay north of Sam Lord’s Castle. Park on the clifftop and go down the steps – beach chairs available for rent. Watch out for undercurrents. Harrismith: A deserted beach that is probably best to visit in a group for a picnic. There are lovely shallow pools formed by the natural breakwater.

Helpful Tips When hiring a car, pay attention to the demonstration of the vehicle as many models are different in the Caribbean. Note the emergency hotline number of your rental company and check that they offer breakdown assistance. Most rental companies offer unlimited mileage, free delivery and pick-up to hotels, villas, airport and seaport, baby seats and free road maps. All vehicles are covered by insurance including unlimited liability for passengers and third party personal injury coverage. The Collision Damage Waiver is comprehensive insurance and is highly recommended, but does not usually cover damage to rims and tyres. Although credit card insurance covers you for most motor vehicles, it is recommended that you check which vehicles are exempt. If you have an accident, you must leave your vehicle in its position and call your car hire company and the police immediately – do not admit liability. For Police dial 211 and ambulance 511. In Barbados we drive on the left. Drivers must have a local driver’s permit which can be obtained from most car rental offices, or from any local Police Station for BDS$10 - it is valid for two months from the date of issue. Seat belts are compulsory. Visitors are easily identifiable on the road by the ‘H’ number plate and locals are usually accommodating of your confusion and make allowances. However, since the ‘H’ does identify you as a visitor you can be a target for pickpockets and harassing vagrants. Authorized security personnel at all attractions and places of interest are usually in uniform, so do not pay anyone else who claims to be “security” to guard your vehicle. Please be careful with your possessions and place them in the boot/trunk wherever possible and ensure that the vehicle is always locked when unattended.

Residents have the liberty to do what they want when they want, without any need to consider the sensibilities of strangers around them and yet still be able to enjoy the benefit of dedicated helpers whose aim is to make sure their guests relax and enjoy themselves. The vast majority of rental properties in Barbados are

looked after by highly accomplished management companies or real estate agencies, professionals who benefit from many years experience of taking good care of both the houses and the guests who stay in them. As such, the villas are generally well maintained and kept in immaculate condition by carefully trained staff, which usually comprises a butler, cook, housemaids, gardener and security watchman. This means that owners and visitors alike can just leave all their worries behind, totally unwind and forget about any sense of responsibility they may have left back home. To further enhance the appeal of ‘villa life’, in recent years the overall quality of the trained staff in the houses and villas has improved considerably, especially in the kitchens. Nowadays there is not only a good supply of Bajan cooks who can expertly produce a variety of delicious local dishes, there now also exists a cadre of very gifted, fully trained chefs who are well capable of producing top class cuisine of an international standard.
Property must pass conveyance of title, evidenced by the recording of the deeds and certified survey plans at the registry of title. A purchaser will require a registered Barbadian attorney to search the register and establish title to the property prior to the completion of sale. The parties sign a binding contract and the vendor’s attorney holds the deposit until completion, at which time the balance of the price is paid. Once an agreement has been made and a 10% deposit of the agreed price has been paid, then the deal must proceed or the deposit is forfeited. The title may be taken in a person’s name or through a corporate vehicle set up to own the property. It is possible for non-residents to purchase property through a company, that may be incorporated outside Barbados but which must be registered in Barbados. The sale of property by all persons, including citizens or permanent residents, is subject to property transfer tax of 2.5%, plus approximately 1% stamp duty. However, the first $125,000 of the sale proceeds is exempt from property transfer tax provided that there is a building on the property. Attorney’s fees for both the seller and the purchaser are approximately 1.5% to 2% of the sale price. The real estate agent’s commission fees are normally 5% of the sale. Both fees are subject to 15% VAT. Any owner of land in Barbados is required to pay an annual land tax at the following rates: First Bds.$125,000 = 0% Next Bds.$225,000 = 0.10% Next Bds.$500,000 = 0.65% Excess over Bds.$850,000 = 0.75% Following enactment of new legislation, there is a Bds$60,000 cap on land tax rates, provided that the house is used exclusively as a residence by the person who owns the land upon which the house is erected.

Restaurant Guide Restaurant Guide It is said that variety is the spice of life, and the culinary diversity of Barbados dining makes for refreshing points of difference for visitors to our shores. There are area maps for the west coast on page 154, the east coast on page 146 and the south coast on page 170. Wherever you decide to dine be sure to try the island’s fresh fish. A delicious choice is Mahi Mahi or Dorado referred to locally as Dolphin. This moist, flaky fish is absolutely delicious and is not in any way related to the mammal porpoise, known as ‘Flipper’. Other delicious catches include Flying Fish, Barracuda, Red Snapper, Tuna and King Fish. Unless otherwise stated all prices are in Barbados dollars and include 17.5% VAT. A restaurant bill is usually not presented until it is requested. Although most restaurants welcome walk-in diners there are many that are fully booked in advance, especially from December to May, so reservations are recommended. Bon Apetite!
