That Barbados Feeling When the Miller Publishing team met to discuss what our readers might enjoy most in this 2024 edition, we all agreed on that intangible but undeniable Barbados ‘x’ factor that makes people feel good when they are here. While asking a broad selection of visitors and locals for a second opinion about using ‘That Barbados Feeling’ as our theme, the enquiry was invariably met with a telling nod and smile – along with lots of interesting comments about what those words immediately brought to mind. A surprising number even said that they get an amazing sense of wellbeing the minute they step off the plane. Is it the underground crystals found throughout the island? Our fresh, oxygen-rich air arriving from across the ocean? The warm welcome from easy-going, hospitable Bajans? Our happy, healthy, fun-filled outdoors lifestyle? The fact that Barbados has a little of something to satisfy everyone? Simple moments of passing pleasure? Or is it a delightfully serendipitous combination of all the above and more? To help you discover that Barbados ‘x’ factor for yourself, we have included a range of articles and photos designed to introduce you to the kind of experiences which typically inspire ‘That Barbados Feeling’. Please enjoy our 2024 edition. We hope it makes you nod and smile.

Cherry Tree Hill Expansion of the St. Nicholas Abbey Railway

St. Nicholas Abbey Expanding Its Railway Having already established its steam train experience as one of the most popular attractions in Barbados, St. Nicholas Abbey is currently undertaking a major expansion of the existing railway. Scheduled to open in time for the 2024/25 season, without any disruption of current operations, the extended line will ensure that passengers enjoy a continuous journey of 40 minutes on the train, complete with a whole new set of dramatic views and photo opportunities. After departing the train station, passing in front of the Plantation House and Lake, and then through the Quarry, one of the exciting new highlights will be crossing over a 300-foot long, steel Victorian style bridge, some 40 feet above Cherry Tree Avenue amongst a splendid canopy of mahogany trees. Continuing its journey south along the eastern escarpment towards 100 acres of plantation fields, the train will stop to allow passengers time to take

in the dramatic highland beauty of the Scotland District. For the return leg, the train will head westward and wind its way through the fields into a hillside forest with views of the west and north of the island, before crossing the bridge for a second time and returning to the station through the Quarry and Gully Gardens. Interestingly, the railway will in the future also provide the central backbone for the transport of the plantation’s sugar cane crop to the steam mill within the factory, thereby ensuring a fully integrated use in the harvesting and maintenance of the plantation fields. Furthermore, in conjunction with the railway expansion, a limited number of self-contained, off-the-grid, 2-bedroom eco cottages will be built in discrete locations along the train route. Accessible via the train and a special purpose ‘locomotive’, this unique tourism product will offer an unparalleled rural living experience within sugar-cane fields. Watch this space - things are happening at St. Nicholas Abbey.

Pier Head Project Under Way The Pier Head Development Project promises to bring an exciting economic boost to Bridgetown with the development of 5 acres of property between the mouth of the Careenage and Carlisle Bay. The project features residential units, commercial spaces, a maritime museum with focus on the history of the Screw Dock, duty free shopping facilities, cafés, restaurants and a beach club with cabanas on one of the most beautiful beaches in Barbados. All this is based in and around three main buildings – the tallest of which is 7 storeys. The project is designed around the theme ‘live, work, play’ with an exciting mix of facilities that offer spectacular views of the city and Carlise Bay. Eighty percent of the property is surrounded by water, encompassing the existing boating docks of Bridgetown’s picturesque careenage. The developers are paying special attention to re-using much of the existing materials in order to present a finished product that respects all of the heritage qualities of the UNESCO World Heritage Site designated area of Bridgetown and its Garrison. The Pier Head Development promises to bring an essential catalyst to revitalise Barbados’ capital city while remaining connected to the rich heritage.

Barbadians ‘Kinged’ at Scottish Draughts Championship Barbadians took first and second place in the Scottish Open Draughts Championship in 2023, with Ronald ‘Suki’ King playing fellow Barbadian, John ‘Jack’ Francis in the final. Their game ended in a draw, but Barbados’ most celebrated draughts player Ronald King was awarded the victory due to having more honour points. Additionally, Kent Layne placed fifth, landing three Barbadians in the top five of the championship. King is the first West Indian and the first black man to win the Europeandominated event which dates back to 1893 with the Scottish Draughts

Association being the oldest draughts federation in the world. Kent Layne – if his performance in the Scottish Championship is anything to go by – will also be one to watch as he continues to climb the ranks.

Today in Bajan History: The Almanac

Photo: Peter Marshall

Fascinating new book, due for release in 2024 Originally conceived as a daily radio series on Starcom by the Department of History and Philosophy of the University of the West Indies, the new print version of Today in Bajan History: The Almanac, presents a significant event for each day of the year, ranging over the centuries of Barbadian history, in an easy-to-read format. Enslaved men and women perpetually seeking freedom, disasters on land and at sea, murders, boats racing or adrift, cricketers, political unrest, epidemics. In a word, excitement. History is more than a series of events and over the course of the ‘year’ patterns begin to emerge. Advertisements by enslavers for the return of runaways reveal the enslaved leading complex lives of intricate networks across locations widely spread across the island. Accidents and disasters leave relatives grieving and hoping for restitution which they seldom see. Through the daily vignettes in Today in Bajan History: The Almanac we see the broad vista of Barbadian history major political events, personal quarrels, responses to economic conditions, successful careers in business and sport, the rise of national heroes, attempts to restrict freedoms, resistance. Each can serve as an opening to further reading into their causes and their long-term effects – into why Bajans are what we are.

Excerpt from Today in Bajan History: The Almanac

Round-the-Island Race January 1, 1936

On this day, January 1, 1936, Barbadians flocked to every vantage point to witness the first ever roundthe-island race. Advertised by the organisers in the Barbados Advocate on December 1935, the notice invited schooner captains to participate. Five schooners - The Sea Fox, the Mona Marie, the Marion B Wolfe, the Lucille Smith and the Rhode Island having lined up at a starting point near Pelican Island, set sail at 7 a.m. in sunny conditions with light winds. The schooners, powered by sails only, were used to transport cargo throughout the islands. On this occasion, however, they were racing for bragging rights and a small amount of prize money. They headed eastward, with the Rhode Island taking the early lead, deploying five sails; but was quickly overtaken by the Sea Fox, which deployed eight sails. According to the Barbados Advocate “apart from motorcars flying hither and thither, every vantage point, every hillock that offered a favorable glance of the race was crowded on Wednesday.” At South Point, with the Sea Fox leading by a mile, the Marion B Wolfe,

The Sea Fox

skippered by captain Leverock, retired from the race. Eventually, the Sea Fox crossed the line at 5:20 p.m., followed by the Rhode Island with captain Hassell, Lucille Smith (with captain Cobham) and the Mona Marie, skippered by Laurie Hassell. The schooners completed the journey in a little over 10 hours. The prizes were £10 for first place, £6 for second place and £4 for third place. Considering the enormous effort to ready the schooners for the race, the prize money was meagre. However, the race brought joy and excitement to many who sought every vantage point on this day, January 1, 1936, to watch the island’s first round-the-island race. You’ve flown for hours and finally step off the plane. The warm air and bright sunlight hit you and it takes your eyes a few seconds to adjust. Your pulse quickens with anticipation. You’ve only just arrived and already been hit by That Barbados Feeling. Of course feelings are intangible … and personal. They are particular to each individual – visitors and Barbadians alike. For a first time visitor, That Barbados Feeling might be the soft, powdery white and pink sand between your toes or a sip of a cold rum punch in the warm sea. Or the exotic and wondrous chorus of whistling frogs and crickets as you lie still in bed, that first night in Barbados. It’s exploring and discovering the island – this trip of a lifetime you’ve been planning for months. You’ll encounter that feeling above and beneath the waves, from hiking through Chalky Mount to swimming alongside majestic turtles. It might be the conversation you have with a vendor in Cheapside market, laughing together as she introduces you to soursop and breadfruit and encourages you to suck a freshly cut piece of sugarcane. For many visitors who have been returning year after year, That Barbados Feeling is their interactions with Bajan people. Strangers who have become friends or adopted family, part of the fabric in their home-away-from-home. Or it’s that favourite west coast beach bar, where they know your name and your drink order, dining al fresco and savouring sundowners. For Bajans who call this ‘rock’ home, That Barbados Feeling is woven into daily life where routine masks the extraordinary: starting the day with a sea bath and a mango in the sea or a walk along Carlisle Bay, pristine and magical in the soft morning light. It’s weekend cricket – men in white on

Regulars taking their early morning sea bath fields of green dot Barbados in the BCA season. Or ending a long day of work with a bus ride across the island with the sky ablaze in hues of orange and pink above the dark silhouetted canefields. Pastimes and the simple pleasures in life are daily reminders to be grateful for our blessings. That Barbados Feeling can be found in the everyday Bajan courtesy of greeting

everyone with a ‘good morning’ or ‘good afternoon’. The strong sense of community – sharing limes or breadfruit with your neighbour over the fence or bubbling a pot for the church fundraising lunch. If you’re a Bajan living overseas, That Barbados Feeling is the nostalgia that calls you home – the aroma of Granny’s cou cou and flying fish wafting through

the house on a Friday afternoon. The crowing cockerel that wakes you early, just like it did in your childhood. Or a beastly cold beer and a ham cutter with the same fellas at the village rum shop, accompanied by the clatter of dominoes slamming onto a worn wooden table. These smells and sounds and tastes are indelible links to past generations, traditions, family and community.

That Barbados Feeling changes with the ebb and flow of the seasons, holidays and events. It’s Grand Kadooment day, where music and euphoria ease your inhibitions. It’s the excitement and hubbub of horse-racing at the Garrison Savannah. It’s Independence Day when the whole country is awash with blue and yellow, showing our national pride. It’s jug jug and ham and sorrel at Christmas.

It’s personal. Yet it’s universal, in our collective love of this land. It’s That Barbados Feeling. At a Glance

V-Ital Vibrations By Greg Castagne

I was an unapologetic comfort food gobbler - fried chicken or fried fish, macaroni pie, tiny salads bathed in salt or mayonnaise, and rotis occasionally for variety, was my staple diet. I have been converted, well mostly, by my Rastafarian brethren who introduced me to ital food.

30

At a Glance

Loosely, I defined ital as a full vegetarian meal on steroids, especially in relation to flavour, nutrition, and vibration. Yes, the Jah energy explained by ital top chefs, is the love in the creation. Having sampled outlets island wide, east to west some 14 miles, I finally found a mecca in local ital dining, Oasis Restaurant in St. Philip. It is said the proof of the pudding is in the eating, and I think some consideration could also be given to price. While Oasis Kelly’s proof is firstly in the greeting and the meeting, he, and his plants, and some of his personal friends who are often dining there, they bring all that is ital into this cool setting. In this touch of eden environment, these appetisers prepare his customers, more what we call family, for his priceless ital food, which puts all

pudding, including that with souse, in its place. For while proper pork is popular in Barbados, Oasis Kelly’s ital meals are far superior in taste, flavour, balance and yes, price. The generous servings mean one effectively gets two meals, that are a nutritious supplement of vital foods, all in one. The vibrations and variety of the ambience of the natural beauty which surrounds is more valuable than the quote unquote “cost”. To top it off there is a selection of drinks to live for, definitely not die for, for the entire experience is all about livety, look it up if you must, but you definitely will experience this encountering Kelly and his Oasis in St. Philip. The Green Heritage of Barbados by Sean Carrington

The entrance of Turner’s Hall Wood

It may be hard to imagine today but in 1627, when the English established a settlement here, Barbados was completely covered in dense forest. This is clear from Richard Ligon in his (1657) book ‘A True & Exact History of the Island of Barbadoes’, where we are told that the island was “ … so overgrown with wood, as there could be found no champions or savannas for men to dwell in”. In no time, however, most of the island was cleared of forest such that fire wood had to be imported and fields of sugarcane dominated the landscape. With the demise of King Sugar from the 1960s onwards there has been a significant recovery of the island’s natural vegetation, notably with forest cover increasing about ten-fold in the last fifty years, much of this in the island’s extensive gully system which is over 400 km long. For such a small spot on the earth (166 square miles or 430 km2), Barbados’ flora is surprisingly welldocumented. Ligon’s (1657) book that was just mentioned was the first to describe several local plants including the towering cabbage palm (Roystonea oleracea) which still abounds today in our gullies. Important plant collectors and scientists also did their bit like physician and naturalist Sir Hans Sloane. He left England in 1687 for Jamaica to serve as physician to the Governor there and Barbados was one of the stops en route where he collected and described several native plants. These specimens were among the vast natural history collection he had acquired by the time of his death at 93 and which helped establish the Natural History Museum in London. Several publications continued to increase our knowledge of the plants of Barbados culminating in 1965 in the Flora of Barbados with lead author, Barbadian botanist Graham Gooding. My own Wild Plants of Barbados, with a third edition just published, is a flora for the general public with many colour photos, built on this foundation. About three quarters of our 663 species of wild flowering plants are native (i.e. established here without human help) and only two of these are endemic or unique to Barbados. The Caribbean islands constitute one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots with some 13,000 plant species, 62% known only from this region. Barbados is but one of over a

Roystonea oleracea from Ligon’s (1657) A True and exact History of the Island of Barbadoes

thousand islands and cays that make up this hotspot. Barbadians and visitors have become increasingly interested in our native plants. For some it is simply to commune with nature, whether the sand dunes of the East Coast, wetlands like the mangrove swamp at Graeme Hall, the few stretches of coastal forest that remain, the expansive forested gully network or Turner’s Hall Wood, that sole remaining patch of original forest. For others it is to better understand the individual plant species themselves, especially with respect to their medicinal and other uses. In revising my Wild Plants of Barbados I had a look at how our plants

were and are used. Almost half of our wild flowering plants (46%) have a recorded use with just as many having medicinal uses as non-medicinal uses. There has been so much said about medicinal uses and bush teas that I will focus instead on non-medicinal uses of our plants. I tallied some 248 nonmedicinal uses, grouping these into broad categories like baskets, brooms, charcoal, dried flowers, dyes, fibre/ rope, fishing aids, fodder, food/drink, fungicide, furniture, glue/exudate, honey, horticulture, insecticide/repellant, jewelery, kitchen utensils, perfume/ toiletries, personal care items, rat poison, soap, tanning agents, timber, torches and toys/games. The top use was in the food/drink category and here we are speaking of fruit and other plant parts gathered from the wild, not cultivated. Coming in second was horticultural use of native plants in landscaping which is a no-brainer in the sense that these plants are well adapted to local conditions so with little care they look just fine. My favourite is the area of basketry in which several woody vines and trees are used. Rock balsam (Clusia plukenetii) is a tree that grows along gully rims with its slender roots hanging down along the walls of the gully. These roots are harvested sustainably and

with the bark scraped off, the roots are then split and plaited into high quality baskets. Unfortunately, many of these uses have been abandoned in favour of mass-produced, cheaper alternatives but many are deeply woven into the island’s cultural heritage. Being a botanist in Barbados has been a rewarding career. At the University of the West Indies, I have had the pleasure of teaching young people from across the Caribbean who shared different stories about our wild plants. Like academics everywhere, aside from teaching, much of my time was spent on researching a relatively narrow topic but being one of the few botanists on the island meant I got involved in much more. Aside from having great areas in which to enjoy nature on my doorstep, I helped the Barbados Postal Service design several stamp issues on plant themes, served on various Government and NGO committees relating to our biodiversity and used my scientific expertise to advise on the potential environmental impact of several projects. Although I have retired from the University, plants continue to play a big part in my life.

Often credited as being the ‘birthplace of rum’, Barbados has a continuous rum-making tradition that dates back to the 17th century. After Englishman Richard Ligon arrived in Barbados in 1647 – just 20 years after settlement by the English – he wrote in his book, ‘A True & Exact History of the Island of Barbadoes’, about: “ … the drink of the Island, which is made of the skimmings of the coppers that boil the Sugar, which they call kill-Devil”. Today, we can safely assume that ‘kill-Devil’ was rum. The first known recorded use of the actual word ‘rum’, anywhere in the world, can be found in a document written on March 30th 1650 for the lease of Three Houses plantation in St. Philip, Barbados, which states: “four large mastrick cisterns for liquor for Rum”.

With a rich heritage that dates back at least 373 years, Barbados rum has been the preferred choice of connoisseurs and seafarers for centuries. Today, the traditional appeal of Barbados rum has expanded onto a wider global stage, both as a top-quality sipping drink and as a key ingredient of cocktails. This greater appreciation of the exceptional quality of the finer Barbados rums can be directly credited to the ongoing efforts of Barbadian rum producers who have worked diligently to embrace modern innovation, while still preserving the best traditions from the past. Three of the island’s leading distilleries – Mount Gay, Foursquare and St. Nicolas Abbey – have returned to the roots of their heritage by growing

their own sugar-cane to produce the cane juice, syrup or molasses required for the distillation of rum, as well as maturing the rum in barrels and bottling it on-site. This 100% artisanal method of production is a key way of protecting the authenticity and integrity of the Barbados rum brand. Those three distilleries are also fully committed to fulfilling their sustainability and environmental responsibilities by adopting eco-friendly practices to protect the natural beauty of the island. Mount Gay Distillery, Foursquare Distillery and St. Nicholas Abbey have all earned international acclaim for the quality of their rum, regularly winning top awards at the world’s most respected wine and spirits competitions.

Open Water Swimming What could be better than a visit to your favourite beach and a swim in the ocean? It’s arguably the most popular leisure activity in Barbados. The many beautiful beaches surrounding the island are all freely accessible to the public; they’re our greatest treasure and a big magnet for tourists. Many Bajans make use of the wonderful waters they’ve been blessed with, routinely flocking to their favourite beach for a soak in the sea or a leisurely swim. Some meet for a quick swim while others like to swim long distances along the coastline. Open water swimming is therapy for the body and soul. That wonderful weightlessness experienced while floating in the water is pure magic. It’s common to hear swimmers describe their troubles and anxieties washing away in the water. Like a daily cleansing, they emerge from their swim feeling energised, calm and ready to face their days. There are numerous informal groups of swimmers who indulge in their passion for open water swimming at popular locations around Barbados. Residents of Barbados or visitors are usually welcome to join in on these swims.

48

At a Glance

The most popular open water swimming location is the spectacular Carlisle Bay on Bay Street, just outside of Bridgetown - a 2km stretch of white sandy beach. You will find swimmers enjoying the calm clear waters at all times of the day. It’s no wonder swimmers from all over the world have made Barbados a bucket list stop; Olympians, world champions, and marathon swimmers have all eagerly flown in for a chance to swim in Barbados’ world class waters. Among these big names is Cameron Bellamy, a South African ultra-endurance athlete who set a world record as the first person to swim around the island - a 90km swim completed in 40 hours and 46 minutes of continuous swimming. Whether you’re a world record holder looking for a new challenge, a casual swimmer looking for the perfect place to swim, or content to just have a relaxing ‘sea bath’, Barbados’ waters are sure to impress.

The internationally renowned Barbados Open Water Festival is held annually in early November. This year it runs from the 6th to the 10th. 5 days of Open Water Swims with over 400 participants from 24+ countries barbadosopenwaterfestival.com

Horse Racing at the Garrison Savannah Thanks to its central location, the Garrison Savannah racetrack is easy to get to, and the pleasant surroundings make it an ideal place for the whole family to share an entertaining afternoon of fun and excitement. The Garrison’s unique eleven furlong oval turf-track provides a very interesting and enjoyable venue for overseas visitors to enjoy a fun day at the races. While sitting in the charming grandstand built in 1908, spectators are literally surrounded by the island’s history and rich horseracing heritage. It is fair to say there is nowhere else like it in the world. Due to its compact design, you always feel close to whatever action is taking place at the time. Food and drink are available inside the stands or while relaxing on the grounds between races. For those who like a little flutter, there are betting booths available both in the stands and around the track. The Sandy Lane Gold Cup race is the most prestigious, internationallyfollowed event. Horses from Canada, the USA, the UK and all around the Caribbean compete. The entire day is a marvellous spectacle of racing fun at its best.

Apes Hill Barbados Where ‘That Barbados Feeling’ Comes Alive

54

At a Glance

It has been widely acknowledged that many people instantly feel relaxed and ‘at home’ as soon as they step off the plane in Barbados, which possibly helps explain why the island has such a high percentage of repeat visitors. As an extension of that special Barbados feeling, Apes Hill has successfully integrated an inherent sense of belonging into the everyday lifestyle of its vibrant, people-oriented residential community. Far from being a fabricated situation, this is in fact a direct reflection of the traditional warmth and hospitality of Barbadians. Benefitting from an elevated location some 1,000ft above sea level, close to the island’s highest point, Apes Hill is blessed with refreshing cool breezes and panoramic views overlooking both the Caribbean Sea on the west coast and the Atlantic Ocean on the east coast. Occupying 475 acres of one of the island’s most geologically unique landscapes, this multi-generational resort has been sympathetically designed to blend seamlessly into the outstanding beauty of its green surroundings. Deemed by many to be the most spectacular golf course in Barbados, and arguably the Caribbean, Apes Hill’s 18 holes gracefully wind their way uphill and downhill, through valleys and over ridges, dotted with huge palm trees, outcrops of rock, coral caves and water features. Such is the natural beauty to be seen from every tee-box and green, it is not unknown for golfers to lose concentration while awaiting their turn to play - suddenly captivated by one of those Barbados moments. As with every aspect of Apes Hill, environmental protection and sustainability are key factors in how the golf course has been designed and is maintained, along with the implementation of the overall development plan. In keeping with their commitment to offer residents an unparalleled amount of open green space and out-of-the-way privacy, the Apes Hill Barbados designers have gone to great lengths to locate house lots and villa locations in strategically optimum positions. With an emphasis on maximising the many pleasures of the classic Barbados indoor-outdoor lifestyle, while still maintaining a balanced ambiance of stress-free tranquillity, Apes Hill offers a broad range of residences.

In addition to luxurious individual built-homes and house lots with a turn key land and build option, there is also a selection of villas available for both purchase and short-term rental. Investing in a home at Apes Hill, or renting for a vacation, affords residents an opportunity to engage with likeminded people in a healthy outdoor environment where wellbeing and exercise are the norm. As well as the obvious attraction of a beautiful world-class course, golfers can also take advantage of Apes Hill’s state-of-the-art Performance Centre – the only one of its kind in the Caribbean – which provides opportunities for custom swing analysis and biometric

fittings, as well as technology-based golf lessons. And for a bit of fun, or practice for beginners, there is a 9-hole short course. Other health and wellness activities include a fully air-conditioned gym, swimming pool, hiking excursions through 12.5km of gully nature trails, tennis, padel tennis, croquet, yoga, bootcamps, spa services, plus access to the resort’s nearby west coast beach facility. The good life at Apes Hill also includes organic farming and fresh cuisine featuring locally sourced ingredients. However, while the availability of top-quality facilities is undoubtedly a pre-requisite for a resort of this high calibre, it is often the simpler pleasures

that make living at Apes Hill so enjoyable and gratifying. Like looking down on the east coast to watch the sunrise or relaxing in your garden admiring the sunset in the west; or better still, sitting high on a ridge where you can see the sun setting and the moon rising at the same time; incredible stargazing from your own back patio; catching a rare glimpse of an osprey gliding majestically overhead; laughing out loud as a group of young monkeys roll and tumble in front of you; or even simply being there when your grandchild plays a round of golf for the first time. Top Tips * Bring your documents (originals, not copies) for your marriage licence – passport and birth certificate (death certificate or decree absolute are also needed if you were married before or widowed). * Don’t get married in the hot midday sun. The closer to sunset (or sunrise!) the better, and don’t forget to wear sunblock and keep hydrated throughout the day. * Outdoor summer weddings in the rainy season (June-November) need a back-up plan with a roof. * Hire an experienced wedding planner who will take care of all of the above for you!

Crafting a Legacy of Giving and Glamour

Company Background: Diamonds International opened its doors in Barbados in 1997, starting with our first store located on Broad Street. We later expanded to the Barbados cruise terminal and key hotels on the south and west coasts. Introducing luxury to the west coast, which surprisingly was not accessible before, marked a significant milestone. Subsequently, Limegrove Lifestyle Centre was established, solidifying Diamond International’s commitment to luxury spaces. This expansion included not only our main brand, Diamonds International, but also the introduction of our in-house exclusive diamond brand, the Crown of Light. We heightened the luxury experience with the establishment of the Breitling Boutique and the Cartier Boutique, both of which are internationally recognised brands.

From inception, Diamonds International has been driven by the vision of being a company that actively contributes to our community. This commitment to giving back was evident right from the start, marked by the initiation of the Diamonds International Substance Abuse Foundation Charity Golf Tournament in 1997, which supports in raising awareness on substance abuse and funds various causes, including the construction of the Verdun House. Another noteworthy charity golf event is our Diamonds International Rotary Club West Charity Golf Tournament, co-founded with the Rotary Club West of Barbados, with over 18 years of consecutive annual tournaments interrupted only by the pandemic. Throughout the years, this remarkable collaboration has raised substantial funds exceeding $2.5 million to support various noble causes in Barbados. Notably, these contributions facilitated the original refurbishment of the Paediatric Ward

at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), the enhancement of the Medical Intensive Care Unit and establishing the Renal Dialysis Unit, providing free dialysis services to the Barbados public. Other initiatives supported include the Ellen Steinbok Hearing Project, focusing on providing free hearing tests and treatment to approximately 2,000 children in primary schools in Barbados and aiding at-risk youth through the Nature Fun Ranch. Our scholarship fund continues to grant scholarships to students facing financial challenges in attending the University of the West Indies among other impactful endeavours that have left a lasting mark on the community. Broadway to Barbados stands as a testament to our dedication to philanthropy, co-founded by Robert & Mary Ellen Bourque, and Jacob & Michal Hassid, with Diamonds International as the leading benefactor. This cherished event has earned a permanent spot on the calendars of many. Each year, an international cast, led by the esteemed

award-winning composer, lyricist, and producer Neil Berg, brings a fresh theme to life. Beyond its charitable cause, Broadway to Barbados consistently draws sold-out audiences, with beloved performances making triumphant returns. The event has even witnessed the spontaneous, heartfelt performance by none other than world renowned musician, Sir Cliff Richard, who was deeply moved by the production.

Corporate Barbados has also rallied behind this cause, not only through ticket purchases, but also by generously contributing to the silent auction. At Diamonds International, we believe in being an integral part of the community and giving back whenever possible. We extend our wholehearted gratitude to the many companies and individuals that consistently support these charities. Their contributions are invaluable, and without them, our

achievements would not be possible. This generous support underscores the collective commitment to making a meaningful impact. As we look ahead, our journey of giving remains unwavering. We are deeply dedicated to continue our charitable efforts, creating a positive impact that resonates far beyond our stores, shining a light into the hearts of our community.

Jeena also uses her art as a force for change, having raised over $150,000 USD for various charities since the start of her career in 2015. Sian Pampellonne Sian captures the essence and souls of humans, animals and insects with raw emotion and vivid colours, captivating the viewer by creating mixed media paintings with acrylics and three dimensional pieces. “I’m an intuitive artist expressing emotions through colour. I don’t paint in the traditional, realistic style. Instead I look for what lies underneath the facade and paint the energy that is seen below the surface. The very essence of what the subject is. As an artist, I am entirely tactile. Everything becomes immersed in the process. My hands, fingers, brushes, a kitchen utensil or tool, nails, whatever happens to be near me.” Sian’s art pieces adorn the walls of many local and international collectors, each one a piece of her story that will never quite be purged from her innately creative spirit. Barbados Beach Therapy There are over 80 beaches in Barbados and it is suprising how much they can vary. Going in search of them is both safe and great fun. In this edition we have given our readers some guidance as to which beaches we suggest for snorkeling, surfing, picnicing or just liming at a beach bar. Carlisle Bay

A Few Words of Caution •

92

Remember, Barbados is only 13 degrees north of the equator so be sure to use a sunscreen with a high protection factor and reapply regularly. When snorkelling, remember to take a brightly coloured buoy/float so that you are clearly visible to water craft – these are available from Hazell’s Water World at Carters General Store on the Harbour Road in Bridgetown. The east coast is notorious for dangerous currents and there are no lifeguards on duty. Other coasts can also have riptides in places so please be cautious. Beware of the poisonous manchineel trees (usually marked with a red ring

Island Adventures

around the trunk) with their yellowgreen ‘apples’ found along the west coast beaches – the tree and its fruit cause severe blistering.

Try these beaches for snorkeling ... Carlisle Bay, St. Michael

The Carlisle Bay Marine Reserve is a haven for snorkelers with six shipwrecks quite close together. Turtle tours are popular. The race horses from the Barbados Turf Club swim here most mornings between 6am and 9am and there is coffee available! Umbrellas, sun loungers and facilities can be found at Harbour Lights and Lobster Alive along with drinks and great food.

Batts Rock, St. Michael

The swimming conditions here are wonderful with good snorkelling at

either end of the beach. Plenty of shade, parking and public facilities.

Sunset Crest, St. James

The best snorkeling in this busy west coast area is off the secluded beach at the southern end of the Holetown boardwalk.

Folkestone Marine Park, St. James

The snorkelling in this protected area is very good. It’s also safe due to restricted water craft. Parking and Public Facilities.

Thunder Bay, Lower Carlton, St. James.

A large area of beautiful reef particularly at the southern end which continues quite far off shore.

Try these beaches for surfing ... Barbados has an excellent range of surf breaks. Surfline.com is a good website to get surfing information because apart from Soup Bowl, which is pretty much surfable year round, most of the surf breaks in Barbados are seasonal.

Soup Bowl, Bathsheba, St. Joseph

With pounding surf, ‘Soup Bowl’ is a famous surf break with local and international surfers. Due to strong currents and heavy waves surfing here is for more advanced surfers. Round House serves breakfast, lunch or snacks and has a wonderful view. (Closed Monday in season with reduced openings in summer).

Freights, Cotton House Bay, South Point, Christ Church

This famous surf spot is ideal for beginners – a great classroom. Most of the surf instructors begin their lessons here.

Brandons, Hastings, Christ Church

This surf break is centrally located and very popular with young surfers and the young at heart who enjoy a quick, early morning surf before work. There’s plenty of shade

Bathsheba

Harbour Lights Beach - Carlisle Bay Bringing you the dreamiest beach day at Carlisle Bay ever; filled with seaside sips, salty dips, swimming with the turtles on our snorkel tour, plus cocktails and food to power you through. Parking is a bit tricky, up a side road and there is quite a long walk through the public access, but it’s worth the effort.

This popular beach has plenty of shade and two distinct swimming areas, one of which is very calm.

Bottom Bay, St. Philip

With very large waves most of the time, not many people swim here but it is relatively safe to do so. Access is by a long, steep flight of steps.

Bathsheba, St. Joseph

There is not much shade, so umbrellas are necessary and the swimming is limited to rock pools, but in spite of all that Bathsheba is still a beautiful and memorable picnic spot.

Palm Beach, Hastings, Christ Church

Between Sugar Bay Resort and Palm Beach Condos is a lovely shady spot with good swimming in front of Coconut Court Hotel.

Try these beaches for liming at a beach bar ... Sit back, relax and enjoy the beach. Order lunch, grab a pool noodle and have a rum punch floating in the sea under a nice big straw hat.

Accra Beach, Rockley, Christ Church

The Tiki Bar serves delicious light bites that are ideal for enjoying whilst reclined in a beach chair. Excellent swimming for children. There can be dangerous currents at the boardwalk end of Accra Beach.

Crane Beach

Holetown, St. James

Calma Beach Club is perfect for cocktails on the beach with a cool vibe where locals and tourists come together and share their stories. They serve elevated Bajan classics as well as iconic sharing boards.

Carlisle Bay, Bay Street, St. Michael

Harbour Lights and Lobster Alive both offer drinks and very good food with wonderful beach chair service. Harbour Lights also offer turtle tours. Both places have plenty of parking. The snorkelling here is excellent.

Accra Beach

Crane Beach, The Crane, St. Philip

This is one of Barbados’ iconic beaches. The Crane Resort’s beach bar, The Grove, has delicious beach bar favourites off the grill, while drinks and coconuts are also sold on the beach. The swimming and boogie boarding here is fun but caution is advised.

Speightstown, St. Peter

Local & Co. is the ultimate Farm to Table beachfront dining and drinking experience in historic Speightstown. Their ‘Beach Smoke & Grill’ has a menu of house smoked BBQ meats, tacos, ceviches & salads. Book a sunlounger and chill all day. Speightstown

Jean Baulu ‘De Monkey Man’ The late Jean Baulu, “de Monkey man”, was more than a larger-than-life scientist and environmentalist. He was a family man, a dear friend, and a member of his community. He came to Barbados with the intention of solving a monkey crisis, not knowing that he would drop such strong roots. Roots that would grow into an evergreen, productive forest in so many ways. Jean had an interesting and wide-ranging education but believed life was for learning: he was a primatologist, scientist, environmentalist, artist, but mostly an adventurer. As an academic, he accumulated several degrees including a B.A. from the University of Montreal, a B.Sc. in Animal Behavior from McGill, and an M.Sc. in Psychology and Primatology from the University of Georgia. After years of fieldwork in Puerto Rico and St. Kitts, he moved to Barbados with his wife Suzanne and their growing family. Over the next four decades they made a huge impact among the Bajan community. In the early days he sparked friendships with some of Barbados’ great conservation academics and movers including Chris Everard, Collin Hudson, Keith Laurie, Newlands Greenidge and Julia Horrocks, researching monkeys, green turtles, leptospirosis and environmental sustainability. In the agricultural field he also collaborated with some of the most hard working people such as Frank ‘Porter’ Corbin, Emerald Thorington, Oswin Vaughn and Andy Springer. In the following years, Jean would bring great changes to the preservation of Barbadian wildlife. To begin with, he implemented the Monkey Crop Damage Control Programme in 1980, tracking the monkey population and crop damage with a goal to help desperate farmers whose crops were being raided and destroyed by our “green monkeys” which were introduced to Barbados from West Africa in the mid 17th century. His idea was to combine humane population management and research to benefit both science and increase food security. This ongoing project is one of his greatest accomplishments. From their home in Bathsheba, Jean and Suzanne started the Barbados Primate Research Center to serve the production and efficacy testing of polio vaccines, contributing to disease control and supporting worldwide eradication. Then in 1985 the dynamic duo created the Barbados Wildlife Reserve as a sanctuary for the monkeys and other Caribbean flora and fauna. This initiative was intended to bring the free roaming animals and humans face-to-face in order to spark conversation about peaceful cohabitation for future generations to come. In time, the ‘Reserve’ as it was affectionately called would become a favorite spot for schoolchildren on class trips, as the Baulus’ priority was

104

Island Adventures

By Sir Henry Fraser

that children could access the information and become enchanted with science. In this space, it was easy for both locals and tourists to fall in love with the monkeys, changing their perception from agricultural villain to tourism hero! This would help contribute to the sustainability and wellbeing of the species. Many more animals call the Reserve home, such as the Cuban iguanas, caiman, deer, red footed tortoises, snakes, peacocks and many other birds. To the east of the Reserve lay Grenade Hall Forest and all but forgotten, derelict signal station surrounded by a mahogany forest. Jean restored the signal station, with its spectacular view across the Scotland District and added a display telling the remarkable story of the chain of signal stations of 1818. He worked closely with The Barbados National Trust, Paul Foster (Director) and me (President) at every step of this faithful restoration and I had the pleasure of getting to know him. He also ensured the preservation of the mahogany forest below the escarpment, laying out safe paths and providing educational signage about the plants. During that period my son and I, sometimes with his friends, were constant visitors to the whole site – the reserve, the signal station and the mahogany forest. Stevie Mayers, one of Jean’s longest standing team members and diving companion summed up our sentiments about his former mentor, “Jean was a really, really good person. Anything that came to his mind would always work. He did so much good for the reserve and so much for the people of Barbados, nobody could ever forget him. His name will be remembered for a long time.” Jean’s art and conservation interests expanded to transforming waste PET bottles into building materials (Duraplast) and recycling ballast bricks from the sugar trade to create the footpaths throughout the forest and reserve, among other things. He worked to be a force for good, taking on a problem with his trademark panache and converting it into an asset. He enjoyed collecting antique items in Barbados, many of which have been repurposed and aged gracefully at the Reserve. He also collected antique monkey prints from across the world, organizing and participating in exhibitions in Montreal, New York and Chicago and he co-authored a book entitled “Monkeys and Apes in Art” with engravings and drawings from over 5 centuries. Art and French-Canadian heritage brought him and the famous Canadian-Bajan artist Denyse-Menard Greenidge together, and she reminisced that “He was a humble, warm person, a man with vision and passion. His philosophical and aesthetic values were ever present in his numerous endeavors. Every project was for Jean a work of art. It contained substance, creativity, originality and aesthetic qualities. Above all he invited the participants to live a new experience.

His sense of ‘Québécois’ humor, though not always understood by all, contributed to his charm and made you want to be part of his dreams. For 40 years, Jean and his family are and always will be true friends.” I must end this short tribute with the last words in his obituary: “He was funny, free spirited and fearless, and had a penchant for risk which made scorpion stings, snake bites and trips to the hospital frequent. He saw nature as part of who we are, and was driven to explore, share and protect it. He leaves a legacy of hope for future generations to find solutions where there are problems, to create a better world where people and nature thrive. Jean will be missed and remains unforgettable.” His wife Suzanne and three brilliant daughters: Katherine, Geneviève, and Isabelle will continue to carry on the amazing Baulu legacy for him. The Wildlife reserve remains a beloved attraction and is now managed by one of his daughters, Geneviève “Cui-Cui” Marsh along with his loyal team. Jean will be greatly missed and forever remembered for his essence and amazing accomplishments. Above all, he was defined best by his irrepressible spirit and palpable positive energy.

Jean Baulu, September 9th, 1944 - November 11th, 2022 Founder’s day is celebrated on Jean’s birthday with complimentary admission to the Reserve. Kind donations received on this day, along with proceeds from the sale of his book contribute to ongoing habitat features created in his honor. If you wish to create a testimonial to his online memorial, please write to info@barbadoswildlifereserve.org for more details.

Flower Forest Flower Forest offers a heavenly stroll through a tropical forest with sweeping views of the Atlantic coastline. Angela’s delicious fish cakes, flying fish sizzling from the pan and sandwiches made to order are reason enough to go there but for some it’s the ice cream that is the deal maker. She also serves beastly cold beers and juices or a nice hot cup of tea or fresh coffee.

A relaxing walk in stunning beauty.

This lush and peaceful place is a garden of towering trees garnished with vibrant flowers – a place to gather your thoughts. Owner David Spieler has been planting many specialist tropical hybrid flowers throughout the forest, which he generously shares with the Barbados Horticultural Society for their gold medal exhibits at the Chelsea Flower Show in London. They have begun

harvesting coffee beans from the 50 odd coffee trees in the forest - which is delicious. The 53 acre property, located 750ft. above sea level, is reserved for green botanical ventures, never to be developed. The garden gazebo is also a wonderful venue for weddings. Hunte’s Gardens Long considered by many to be the finest garden in Barbados, Hunte’s Gardens has recently been further honoured with the prestigious accolade of Trip Advisor’s 2023 Gold Award for the Best of the Best in the World. This is a fitting reward for owner/creator, Anthony Hunte, BCH, whose ambitious dream when he first set out to build the garden was to turn it into the most enchanting place on earth. Encouraged by this outstanding recognition, Anthony is now more determined than ever to maintain Hunte’s Garden’s ‘best in the world’ status. And, as the only attraction in Barbados to attain the Gold Award, he hopes that his achievement will inspire other attractions in the island to strive for similar success in the future. When you visit Hunte’s Gardens it is easy to see why this horticultural gem is so admired. From the time you enter through the elegant timeworn gates and walk across the old weigh bridge, where truckloads of sugar cane were once weighed and tallied during the property’s days as a working plantation, you are immediately immersed into a lush world of vivid colours and nature at its wondrous best. The exquisitely designed garden occupies every nook and cranny of a large limestone sinkhole and its surrounding slopes, creating a magical backdrop for a remarkably wide array of beautiful tropical blooms, exotic flowering plants and orchids, all encompassed within a grove of magnificent towering palms and trees.

110

Island Adventures

To further enhance the ethereal charm of the experience, Anthony has created a series of small, ‘secret gardens’ where visitors can sit, completely surrounded by nature, to quietly absorb the peacefulness or enjoy a picnic. To add a perfect end to a memorable visit, be sure to climb the upper level steps to relax on the veranda that overlooks the entire property. This is where Anthony likes to chat and offer his guests a glass of freshly made gingerlemonade or one of his legendary rum punches, proudly made with his own exceptional cask selection, Hunte’s Gardens 10 Year Old Reserve Fine Barbados Rum. You can even buy a bottle to take back home. If driving to Hunte’s Gardens, follow the many red and white signs found around the island. Alternatively, come by taxi. Or take the #5 Sugar Hill bus from the Fairchild Street Bus Stand in Bridgetown for just BB$3.50 each way.

A Journey Through History, Luxury and Elegance Barbados, the gem of the Caribbean, is a destination that offers varied experiences, from laid back island living to luxurious comfort, history and timeless beauty. Known for its pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, vibrant culture and some of the most welcoming people to be found anywhere, this island paradise has captivated the hearts of travellers for generations. Realtors Limited has been an industry leader since its inception in 1952, embracing and growing with what would become a burgeoning rental industry, still vibrant to the present day. The company has enjoyed a front row seat to the pivotal moments in Barbados’ history, that have made it a favoured destination for discerning travellers. Selling points are many and include its historical buildings, lush landscapes and treasured coastlines. Barbados is a living testament of its rich history, with numerous buildings that have withstood the test of time. Among these architectural gems is St. Nicholas Abbey, a Jacobean mansion built in the early 17th century. This stunning plantation house offers visitors a glimpse into Barbados’ colonial past, complete with beautifully preserved gardens, historic steam locomotive and a rum distillery. Another historical treasure is George Washington House,

where the first President of the United States once stayed during his youth. This elegant structure showcases the island’s historical ties to the United States, making it a must-visit for history enthusiasts. The 50s, 60s, 70s and 90s marked pivotal decades in Barbados’ history and during each era, iconic villas emerged as symbols of elegance and sophistication setting the stage for the island’s reputation as a celebrity hotspot. The 60s saw the opening of the now iconic Sandy Lane Hotel, developed by Ronald Tree, a British ex-politician with great vision and who was also

the Founder of the Barbados National Trust, which continues to do great work for the survival and protection of heritage buildings. The hotel underwent major refurbishment in the late 90s, was unveiled in 2001 and continues to redefine standards of excellence. The villa market also started to be developed more widely at this time and Galena, located on the Sandy Lane Estate was one of the first homes built. Realtors Limited has managed the property from then until now, currently on behalf of the second generation of owners.

Innisfree

Innisfree is another of the earlier builds, again managed by Realtors Limited from the start. In the 70s, due to Oliver Messell’s influence and love of Barbados, historic villas such as Leamington Pavilion, Maddox, Mango Bay, Cockade House and others were created to offer a taste of Caribbean Luxury never seen before. Villas of this unique style dot the landscape of the west coast of the island. Barbados saw its first purpose-built luxury residential marina on the island at Port St. Charles. This development was launched in the 90s and still stands as a benchmark on the West Coast. Through the years Sandy Lane and Westmoreland continue to be names synonymous with luxury and exclusivity in Barbados; these developments helped to shape the landscape of Barbadian luxury real estate. The story of Sandy Lane Hotel dates to the early 20th century when it was a sugar plantation. Today, it stands as one of the most opulent resorts in the Caribbean, offering world-class amenities, golf courses, and a stunning beachfront setting. Royal Westmoreland boasts a rich history of its own. Once a sugar plantation as well, it has transformed into an upscale residential community known for its magnificent villas,

Point of View

Robert Trent Jones Jr. golf course and breathtaking views. Just another one of the developments at the epitome of Barbados’ allure. Barbados has long been a playground for the rich and famous who are drawn to its natural beauty and warm hospitality. Renowned figures such as Rihanna, Simon Cowell and Sir Cliff Richard have chosen to make Barbados their second home. The legendary American actress, Claudette Colbert also owned a vacation home, Bellerive, which Realtors Limited managed until her death. The island’s allure goes beyond its beaches; it’s the vibrant culture, friendly locals and unmatched privacy that continue to attract celebrities seeking an escape from the spotlight. Realtors’ guests have included the likes of many other famous personalities gracing our portfolio of iconic villas through the decades. Barbados, with its historical buildings, illustrious resorts, famous visitors and iconic villas, continues to enchant travellers with a feeling that can only be found here. Barbados offers a feeling of stepping back in time while indulging in modern luxury; of walking among celebrities and experiencing the epitome of Caribbean elegance. Whether you’re seeking a historical journey or a taste of the high life,

Barbados and Realtors Limited are ready to welcome you with open arms and an embrace that lingers long after your visit. Realtors Limited offers a portfolio of villas ranging from traditional Caribbean charm such as Heronetta, Evergreen and Innisfree to modern luxury such as Westfield, Point of View, Villa Amma and Happy Trees. We look forward to you contacting us to benefit from our 70 years+ of local experience and knowledge.

At Home in a Villa

Barbados has developed a culture that embraces tourism. So, rather than remaining isolated in enclaves, visitors tend to find themselves mixing regularly with locals, which means they get to enjoy a truly authentic Bajan experience. And one of the best ways to sample our happy lifestyle is to stay in one of the many beautiful villas that are available for rent or purchase. What makes a villa vacation so special is that it can provide both the relaxed environment of a private home and the attentive service of a top resort. This frees up residents to do what they want when they want, without having strangers around them, while still benefitting from a team of dedicated helpers – including personal chef, butler and housekeeper - whose sole aim is to make sure their guests relax and feel at home.

Anybody would welcome this wonderful best-of-both-worlds scenario, but it can be particularly attractive for multigenerational family groups who want to spend valuable quality time together. These family vacations often provide life long memories, especially for the children. Many families actually book a villa vacation every year, just to guarantee a chance to spend that high level of quality time together. And when the children themselves become adults, they often want to return to the scene of their happy childhood holidays. Barbados offers a wide range of villas in a variety of locations and at both ends of the price spectrum. The majority of these rental properties are looked after by highly accomplished management companies or real estate agencies, who

benefit from many years’ experience of taking good care of both the houses and the guests who stay in them. As such, the villas are generally very well maintained and kept in immaculate condition. From an owner’s perspective, because the Barbados villa rental market is so vibrant, there exists real potential to generate significant income from a holiday home by renting it out when not in use. To facilitate this, the majority of villa rental companies and residential communities operate a rental programme, which owners can choose to participate in if they wish.

Barbados 12 Month Work Visa A brain-child of the Covid-era, in June 2020 Barbados launched a unique 12-month work visa, the Barbados Welcome Stamp, one of the first in the world. The brilliance of the Welcome Stamp is how easy it is for people to pick up and move here without all the usual red tape. It’s a remote-working visa issued online, for non-nationals of Barbados with existing employment in their home country. They remain tax resident overseas, so are not liable for tax here in Barbados. Here’s a quick look at the success of the scheme: From July 2020 to April 2023, Barbados received 4,394 applications. The data shows that the top countries where welcome stampers are coming

from are the USA, UK, Canada, Ireland and Nigeria. What remote work are they doing? Everything from tech, marketing, finance, education, law, distribution and logistics, and public administration. Issuing Welcome Stamp visas, plus direct spending, adds up to millions of dollars. So at a time when shortterm tourism was reduced due to the pandemic, the Welcome Stamp has made a hugely important injection into the Barbados economy, from the rental market to rum shops!

The Bayview Hospital By Sir Henry Fraser The Bayview Hospital could be described as the reincarnation of the famous Diagnostic Clinic established in 1939 by Dr Harry Bayley. Dr Bayley was the medical phenomenon of Barbados in the mid-20th century – a larger than life figure (literally and metaphorically) whose fame as a brilliant doctor spread across the Caribbean and South America, with patients coming even from Venezuela and British Guiana to see him. He opened his Diagnostic Clinic first (known as Bayley’s Clinic), on Beckles Road, off Bay Street and less than a mile from the centre of Bridgetown. He expanded it in 1946 to a hospital with 16 beds and one operating theatre; he ran it with his wife, Iris, as manager and chief technologist until he died of a heart attack in 1959. Eventually the Diagnostic Clinic became a purely outpatient facility, with several physicians and surgeons having consulting rooms, alongside an expanded laboratory and radiology facilities, and the need for a modern private hospital became a matter of urgency. The Bayview Hospital was created by a medical partnership, built and opened in 1989 to great acclaim. The name is derived from its site at Bay Cottage, once the residence of the manager of the Bay Plantation which

140

Health & Wellness

faced Carlisle Bay, and in fact once the home of Dr Bayley and his family. The Bayview Hospital was built with 24 rooms and first one operating theatre and then expansion to provide three operating theatres. The first Chief of Staff was the late Mr. Arthur Edghill, FRCS and a graduate of the University of the West Indies. He was succeeded by Dr Charles Edwards, physician specialist and gastroenterologist, also a graduate of the University of the West Indies. It has had an open-door policy, providing practicing privileges for many of our doctors, now working with almost 100 specialists in every discipline, and acquiring a great reputation especially for obstetric care. It has provided a most valuable service both to locals and visitors, especially when the public hospital, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, has been under pressure. It was acquired by Bayview Hospital (2014) Ltd., and has been undergoing wonderful, and now dramatic changes under the management of Mrs. Jules Reid, a British trained nurse who went to school in Barbados and has an astonishing range of professional and management experiences. She replaced Mrs. Linda Lewis, who had managed the hospital since its opening. In the last few years Bayview has developed a two

bed, state-of-the-art Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and has a cohort of junior doctors who are employed part time to help provide full 24-hour in-patient cover. One of the much-praised aspects of Bayview is the cuisine – it’s consistently praised for the wonderful food, carefully prepared to match the needs of patients with special problems, and it receives glowing praise from everyone! “Better than a hotel”, they say! Bayview is proud of its early creativity in Covid-19 testing and protocols which ensured complete protection from the epidemic which attacked almost every other institution. An interesting and attractive feature of the changes is the creation of a “Family room”, a spacious patient room which allows a relative to stay with the patient around the clock. This is particularly welcome for visitor emergencies such as those from a cruise ship or a child and the mother! Until now, patients were admitted electively, or as emergencies through the island’s other emergency care departments – FMH in Belleville, Sandy Crest near Holetown in St. James, or Coverley in Christ Church – or even the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. The dramatic on-going, on-site expansion with an emergency service and the most modern diagnostic facilities will change that. Building began in January 2023 of a three-storey block which will house a well-planned Urgent Care facility on the ground floor and the full range of diagnostic imaging on the floor above, including CAT scanner, standard X-Ray facilities, fluoroscopy and ultrasound, while MRI will continue at the Warrens Medical Clinic, next to the Diabetes Clinic at Warrens. There will be a newly fitted medical laboratory, doctors’ consulting rooms and an additional operating theatre. The building will be bridged to the existing hospital at the first-floor level over the driveway and entrance to the Urgent Care facility. Completion is expected by March 2024, marking perhaps a watershed in modern health care in Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean. The value of modern tertiary care both in saving foreign exchange from patients going abroad, and in bringing patients here (medical tourism) is huge… so hopefully there will be further developments.

Transforming Lives and Boosting Confidence Cosmetic and Reconstructive Care in Barbados Dr. Giovanni Ferrando

Thanks to its ideal climate, beautiful natural environment, healthy outdoors lifestyle and welcoming friendly people, Barbados has long been an aspirational vacation destination for visitors from all around the world. More recently, with the continued development of the country’s sophisticated international business sector, Barbados has also become a preferred jurisdiction for international investors. Charmed by the numerous advantages that living on this remarkable island can offer, many of those investors eventually purchase a home and spend all or part of the year living here. In the case of Dr. Giovanni Ferrando and his wife Laura, after falling in love with Barbados some fifteen years ago, they have not only invested in their own Barbadian ‘home away from home’, but also established a medical practice, East Caribbean Plastic Surgery, which specialises in Cosmetic and Reconstructive Care. Having spent thirteen years studying and training at two of Italy’s most prestigious universities, Genoa and

142

Health & Wellness

Rome, Dr. Ferrando then spent a further five years perfecting his art at several of the world’s leading medical institutions, where he honed his Plastic and Reconstructive skills while operating alongside some of the profession’s most gifted surgeons. Today, with over thirty years’ experience, Dr. Ferrando is an eminently qualified and highly regarded

Dr. Giovanni Ferrando and his wife Laura

Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgeon, licensed by the local government medical authorities in Europe, the United Kingdom and Barbados, as well as being a member of The American Society of Plastic Surgery. In addition to managing his own private hospital in Italy and a clinic in London, Dr. Ferrando has also opened a thriving practice in Barbados, where he performs his surgical procedures at the modern, privately owned Bayview Hospital. Over the years, Dr. Ferrando has become renowned for his exceptional skills in a wide range of surgical procedures, including facial rejuvenation, breast surgery – both aesthetic and reconstructive – and body contouring. His meticulous attention to detail, artistic sensibility, and unwavering commitment to patient safety have earned him the trust of both patients and colleagues alike. Dr. Ferrando has also been actively involved in medical research and his innovative techniques and forward thinking approach have paved the way for safer and more effective procedures, helping to shape the field of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Dr. Giovanni Ferrando My wife Laura and I both feel very happy and ‘at home’ whenever we are in Barbados. It is a wonderful island for enjoying the simple pleasures of life. The more we came here, the more we wanted to stay, so it always seemed like a good idea to set up a practice. But what really convinced us to go ahead is that Barbados has all the required conditions, such as a sound national infrastructure and worldwide travel connections, to enable a hospital like Bayview to become a hub for medical tourism and a centre of excellence in all sectors of medicine. And, at the same time that Barbados was willing to welcome me and my wife into their community, I wanted to give back to the country by contributing to the development of the local healthcare sector. Not only by offering my professional services to Barbadians and visiting international patients, but also by sharing my expertise and extensive knowledge with young Barbadian doctors, as well as general mentorship programmes, educational initiatives and charitable support. Having become accustomed to working in different kinds of environments and countries, I can attest that Bayview Hospital is an excellent facility, with state-of-the-art technology and top of the line medical staff that allow me to concentrate solely on the wellbeing and satisfaction of my patients. And that is essential for me, because taking good care of my patients is a top priority. Throughout my 30-year career, I have always worked hard to provide first-class service, including regularly checking up on my patients following surgery, sometimes for weeks or months depending on the demands of the specific procedure.

I feel very fortunate to have Laura managing the day to day aspects of East Caribbean Plastic Surgery, especially for the excellent work she does liaising with those patients from abroad who need extra assistance. My wife makes sure they have as comfortable and relaxing an experience as possible, by looking after all of their needs from travel arrangements, to accommodation, food requirements, home care, and any other customised requirements they request.

Postoperative recovery time can differ between surgeries, and that is one of the reasons why people should seriously consider coming to Barbados for Reconstructive or Cosmetic Surgery. In addition to the availability of skilled surgeons and exceptional medical staff, Barbados offers a wonderfully relaxing and enjoyable environment where patients can rest and recover in peace. This also provides an attractive advantage for any friends or family members accompanying the patient.

For my part, I take great satisfaction from Reconstructive Surgery because it repairs a patient’s body that has been affected by birth defects, developments of diseases, or results from injuries. Equally, Cosmetic Surgery gives a patient a new sense of self-confidence, which is also very rewarding. Either way, making people happier is what gives me the greatest joy. Ultimately, I feel privileged to do what I love every day and to witness the positive impact it has on the lives of my patients.

Barbados FAQs Welcome to our island! We hope you enjoy your stay here with us. Here are some basic facts to get you started... Is Barbados safe? Yes, Barbados is generally considered safe, however practice the same caution and common sense that you would at home, especially with your belongings, or going out at night. Avoid leaving valuables in plain sight in your car, and always park in well-lit areas.

Can I swim in the water here? It is generally not advised to swim on the east coast of the island, due to strong undercurrents and often unpredictable waves coming in from the Atlantic Ocean. However, the west and south coasts are considered much safer for swimming. It is important to know that not every beach has a lifeguard on duty. Always use your discretion when venturing out into the water.

How much should I give as a tip?

A 10% service charge is added to the bill at most restaurants, which is then often divided amongst the staff. Tipping is at your discretion, however 10-15% of the bill can be used as a rule of thumb.

What side of the road do you drive on here?

We drive on the left side of the road, and the majority of the vehicles are right hand driven. Be sure to wear your seatbelt! It is mandatory for both drivers and passengers to wear seatbelts while on the road. Also, children under 5 years of age must use a car seat.

What is the voltage used in Barbados?

The standard voltage is 115V, with a frequency of 50 Hz. If coming from North America, you will not need adapters or converters for your devices. However, if you come from a region with a standard voltage of 220-240V, consider bringing adapters and converters. Most hotels provide these – just ask a question at front desk.

Can I drink tap water here?

Yes, it is perfectly safe to drink water from the tap in Barbados.

What currencies are accepted here? The Barbados dollar (BDS) is the island’s national currency, however US dollars are accepted in some stores and restaurants at a rate of 2:1.

How to get around the island: The iconic red and white Bajan bus stops are easy to follow – they are either marked “To City” or “Out of City”. ZR vans, minibuses and buses all stop here. Not sure where to get off? Ask the driver - they will be more than willing to help you!

By car:

It’s very easy to rent a car in Barbados! Be sure to bring your drivers license with you, as you need it to acquire a local driving permit.

By bus:

The government-owned buses are larger, and blue with yellow stripes. Bus fare is also $3.50, however it is necessary to carry correct money as change is not given. You can use the local app Beep Bus to plan your bus trips. Bus schedules can be found on the Transport Board’s website www.transportboard.com
