Less than two years out of university, Marina Raphael is already running her own eponymous accessories brand, selling exquisitely crafted luxury handbags to the global glitterati and forging intriguing collaborations that ensure she stays well ahead of fickle fashion trends.
Born and raised in Athens, Greece, Marina, 22, a business management graduate of King's College London, always knew she would take an entrepreneurial career path. As a member of the Swarovski family on her Swiss-Austrian mother's side, she shares her illustrious forebears' passionfor creativity and design, combined with a strong work ethic.
She chose to design handbags because, as she explains, "they can be used by everyone, regardless of age or size", with an emphasis on timeless quality, structured shapes and sustainability. In a nod to her heritage, Marina's Italian-made bags also incorporate Swarovski crystals in innovative and eye-catching ways.
One of her most striking new designs is the miniature Evangelie in Crystal party bag - born out of a collaboration between the designer and her friend, Greek art director and influencer Evangelie Smyrniotaki - which is composed of a single mesh panel encrusted with more than 5000 Swarovski crystals.
As well as its signature architectural and geometric shapes, the brand is known for its use of natural materials, such as napa leather, straw, suede, bamboo and eco-wool. As Marina says, her bags
are investment pieces, which is one of the reasons they have continued to fly off the online shopping 'shelf' amid the pandemic and her brand has steadily grown in the face of a challenging market environment.
"People expect a lot from their wardrobe now, and especially in this new climate, customers expect clothes to be multi-functional and durable more than ever:' explains Marina. "Our mini handbags fit in with the new lifestyle, where we tend to carry less when leaving our homes. We also found customersgravitating towards the escapist, fantasy side of the brand, too - our bags offer women the chance to dream about parties and sparkle. They were buying these pieces for the ultimate pick-me-up even if they had nowhere to go!"
Marina Raphael can already boast an abundance of royal and celebrity fans, including Queen Maxima of the etherlands, Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece and her daughter Princess Maria-Olympia of Greece, model Candice Swanepoel, andinternational influencers such as Tiffany Hsu, DoinaCiobanu, Xenia Adonts and Caroline Vreeland.
As multi-lingual Marina launches her spring/summer collection-inspired by her Greek childhood and holidays spent island-hopping in the Aegean -she tells MilliOnAir about her inspirational family, her commitment to slow fashion, and how, as a young entrepreneur, she is determined to overcome the doubters.
"I am half Greek on my father's side, and half Swiss-Austrian from my mother's. Growing up, I was always influenced by my family's entrepreneurial background as well as the warmth and energy of the Greek people. I still live in Greece and have chosen to found my company here."
"I grew up with a very international mindset. From a very young age, my brother and I learnt to be open-minded and all-accepting. We also developed a love for exploration and travel, all thanks to our parents. I speak a total of five languages: Greek, Spanish, English, German and Italian. I learnt three of them from the start, as I spoke English at school, German with my mum and Greek with my dad. I then decided to learn Italian and Spanish to help with the company. Italian is essential for me as I love to be able to speak with our artisans in Florence who create our bags, on a much more personal level. I also travel to Italy a lot, taking an active part in the supply chain and production, so speaking the language is necessary for me.''
"I am very proud to come from a family with such an entrepreneurial background and heritage. My exposure to the business and fashion world from a young age, sparked my curiosity and led me down a creative path. I try to pay my respects to that heritage through my brand on a daily basis; you will find a crystal in every creation, even if it may not be immediately obvious."
Whendidyoufirstbecomeinterestedin fashion?
"I remember always being interested in fashion. My earliest memory would be when I was about six-years-old, sitting on the floor next to my mum [Anouchka] and helping her get dressed for parties and other outings. I loved combining her dresses with the right accessories and seeing the whole outfit come together. Growing up, my biggest inspirations were my mum and my grandma [Marina]. Their timeless sense of style and the way they exuded confidence are things that I truly admire to this day. Confidence can make an outfit and we always try to bring this to the Marina Raphael woman."
"Although I explored different creative paths as a child, such as drawing, beading and sewing, I wouldn't say that a career in fashion was 'meant to be'. I think it was more the entrepreneurial endeavours in general. It's an entrepreneurial mindset that drives me -I started an events business before I went to university. I think it's extremely important to understand that business and fashion run hand in hand. A successful brand is equal parts business and design. You have to set realistic goals, realistic budgets and have a strong strategy and company structure.'
Youhavesaidyouwereinspiredbythe womeninyourfamilytostart your company...
" Jot only are they my role models, they also became my muses as I was building my brand. They are strong, independent and caring. They are confident in their own skin and carry themselves with such poise and elegance. Their support throughout these two years has been immeasurable, as they not only choose to wear my bags, but they also encourage every step I take. I want to make every woman feel as special as they are."
Whatpromptedyoutodesign handbags?
"Firstly, I wanted to make something that is inclusive, and can be worn and used by anyone. Secondly, I wanted it to be considered timeless; more of an investment piece. And lastly, I wanted to do this by following a sustainable path, using materials that are biodegradable, as well as techniques that are not only environmentally friendly, but that also support local communities. Handbags allow for a great blend of fashion frivolity and expert knowledge -when done correctly!"
"I don't feel that I have to prove myself, but I do think that there are always people who are going to doubt your work, no matter what. In any case, I try to focus on my brand and do my part to live up to the name of the strong line of entrepreneurs that I come from by creating something meaningful:'
"I believe that in order to succeed in any market, not just the fashion industry, it is important to be driven, energetic, passionate and dedicated. A strong work ethic is so valuable and I always make sure the work speaks for itself before people judge my age. Also, you must be able to choose the right people to join your team, as well as be willing to overcome any obstacles you find along the way."
"Through this process I learned that I am very dedicated as a person, and that once I set my mind on something I work endlessly until I achieve it. What drives me is my passion to create accessories that empower every person wearing them."
"My first 'pinch me' moment was definitely when we received our first online purchase. There is no bigger compliment than when someone parts with their hard-earned money for something you created. Other moments that felt surreal included seeing Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, Candice Swanepoel, Giovanna Battaglia, and many other incredible women wearing our bags, along with my first cover story and being taken on by major retailers, such as Moda Operandi, LuisaViaRoma and Harrods."
HowdidyourcollaborationwithSwarovski comeabout?
"I have always loved crystals and always planned to incorporate them as a way of paying tribute to my heritage. The reason why I decided to work so closely with Swarovski, is that I trust in the precision of their work, and believe they are the perfect partner to oversee the quality control of my handbags."
Whatdocrystalsmeantoyou?
"Crystals to me are associated with happiness, joy, and celebration. Incorporating them is my favourite part of the design process. Being able to make each customer feel glamorous with even the slightest touch of sparkle is what I love the most."
"I would say that travel has played a very important role regarding my architectural and cultural influences. Travel is the best gift anyone could give you. It opens your mind to new possibilities, new landscapes, new views, and of course, different cultures. I find myself drawn to the idea of juxtaposing textures that are really tactile but also have a degree of comfort, and thinking outside the box about ways to create an antithesis between the classic and the modern, just like you see old and new buildings within the same city or ancient artefacts within a contemporary museum."
"When the sketches turn into live prototypes, only one word could describe my feelings and that is: Excitement! The process itself is so long that it makes me happy to see the end result and reminds me how rewarding it is:'
WhydidyoudecidetoproduceyourbagsinFlorence?
"Italy has such a history of talented artisans and craftsmen so choosing to produce them there was a no-brainer. Everything is made by hand using centuries-old techniques. In order to really appreciate and distinguish a luxury product, it is important to pay attention to detail as you can tell if something is really luxurious by the very stich of the product. Plus, this dedication to quality is another strong way in which I believe the company is sustainable. Luxury is designed to last."
Tellusmoreaboutyourcommitmenttosustainability?
"The importance of sustainability was instilled in me from a very young age, as I grew up learning to appreciate the value of quality over quantity. My mother and grandmother also played a very important role in teaching me the importance of biodiversity and environmental conservation. My grandma is actually president of the Goulandris atural History Museum in Athens, and has dedicated her life to raising awareness about climate change:'
"As a brand we support local artisans and craftsmen, responsibly source materials, integrate biodegradable components, as well as implement a near-zero-waste policy, which is achieved by recycling and upcycling all left-over materials:'
Whatmorewouldyouliketoachieveinthisarea?
"I don't think that any brand can say with certainty that they are 100% sustainable. That being said, it doesn't mean we shouldn't all be working to become more sustainable. As a brand we try to do our part by not only offering more sustainable alternatives to existing best sellers (e.g. the Porter is a more sustainable than the Riviera bag) but we also constantly experiment with new materials, alternatives to leather, and fabrics that have a smaller environmental impact:'
HowdidthePorterbagcomeabout?
"We collaborated with Maria Fernanda Hernandez Franco, head of sustainable projects and global communications at LuisaViaRoma, on the Porter bag, which is made from biodegradable leather and ecological wool. It was this collaboration that really got me thinking outside the box and gave me the idea of incorporating fabrics made of an ecological blend of wool and cashmere."
"The Marina Raphael women is not defined by trends. She is timeless yet modern, regardless of age; carries herself with confidence and embraces her personal sense of style. She is international and often on-the-go, so the functionality and form of her handbag are essential."
"It's incredibly heart-warming to see people with such an incredible sense of style showing such love for the brand. The fact that these elegant and influential women have chosen my brand, is truly an honour. Of course, all the women in my family own a Marina Raphael handbag."
Whatdoyouliketodotorelax?
"What relaxes me the most is going on mountain hikes with my dogs. This helps me to clear my mind:'

Relationship
Asleep. An energetic, bubbly, fit and vibrant woman who was losing her desire to enjoy life, her family and all she was fortunate enough to have.
A second girlfriend had slipped out of regular contact and finally told me just prior to Lockdown 3.0 that she had been going through a really difficult time, she had felt unable to cope and some days felt like slitting her wrists. Fortunately, both of these women shared this newfound loss of self and with the help of hormone replacement therapy returned to a balanced state once more. In hindsight, these two creative, intelligent and now healthy women look back on this time and acknowledge that their prior state left them both feeling (wrongly) that they had little reason to live.
In light of the recent loss of former British model and fashion designer Stella Tennant, and on a more personal note with my dear girlfriends also suffering during this time. It comes as no surprise that mental health experts are seriously concerned that Covid-19 is pushing up the numbers of perimenopausal depression and suicide.
“Australian statistical data shows the highest rate of age specific suicide rate for females in 2015 was in the 45-49 age group and the second highest group 50-54 years.”
The recognition of mental health in the past years has become ever more prevalent and medical experts and others alike have to come to realise and recognise its importance. Mental health in perimenopausal women can have a devastating impact as they approach menopause as the risk of serious depression is significantly increased, not only due to the hormonal shifts but also the lack of support around the topic. There is a gap in recognition and provision for middle-aged women experiencing depression relating to the hormonal changes of the menopause and it is simply not discussed. We now acknowledge post-natal depression but perimenopausal depression is still brushed under the carpet. An awareness of such a significant life change can allow those suffering and their families to identify what is going on and act to support those affected.
Established in a study on women in Seattle carried out in 2008 it was found that, “Menopausal women are three times likely to develop depression than premenopausal women.”
Perimenopause is the time preceding menopause - a series of disrupted periods and hormonal chaos occurs before menopause. Menopause being defined as being “12 months following the last period’. Therefore, the time prior to this is known as perimenopause and the diagnosis of perimenopausal depression is often made retrospectively. During this time hormones drop as do feel-good hormones such as serotonin which can lead to increased irritability, anxiety and sadness. Some of the dips in hormonal fluctuation in perimenopause can take form in a set of depressive episodes, especially for those who may have experienced depression in the past.
“As a clinician treating menopause, menopausal and peri-menopausal depression is quite common and is caused by deficiency in sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone since these decline at or prior to menopause. When these hormones are replaced, preferably in body-identical form, there is usually a significant remission of depressive symptoms which is associated with a brighter outlook’. Dr Nyon Eccles -leading bioidentical hormone specialist.

For skeptics on the idea of 'existence' beyond the physical realm, Fraser is armed with a sense of realism; whilst she may have been tuning into the powers of the subconscious for the past couple of decades, research over the last two years has actually proven the subconscious to be 100,000 times more powerful than the conscious. 'I think people aren't aware that they block themselves on a daily basis,' she exudes, 'Education is so behind, kids should be taught emotional intelligence along with geography.'
In a crisis time when the collective is turning to 'higher consciousness' to find a path through, Fraser has created outdoor healing spaces she terms 'manifest triangles.' Although the idea (again sent from 'spirit') came to her late 2018, she has been researching and finding sponsorship to create small areas with lay-lines filled with an immense amount of her vortex (ancient divine light) healing energy. The triangle shape is symbolic in ancient healing terminology; 'you only have to stand in it for a couple of minutes. I have programmed codes in which are vibrations that go straight through the body just by standing in it. I send healing light into the space onto a daily basis.' Already in North England, the 'manifest triangles' will be coming to London later this year.
It's meditative even talking to Fraser; whilst her results speak for themselves, she agrees attitudes to the 'self' and healing practices are archaic. 'We live in a hard core, material world. I want to educate people that 'everything is available to us' if we just learn to ask for it in the right way.'
lockdowns, you can now enjoy its dynamic new ecommerce platform, HOME-X, which offers a wide range of luxury dining experiences to homes across the UK.
The aim is to provide restaurant-quality food and drink from the celebrated Six by Nico team, headed by Scottish-Italian chef Nico Simeone, ranging from vegan tasting dishes and pre-prepared Chateaubriand to handpicked artisan cheeses and exceptional wines. There are even gift cards from £50 to £200 so you can treat someone special to the experience.
Devised during the 2020 pandemic, the platform so far includes Home by Nico, STEM wine club, Chateau-X, The Cheese Club, vegan offering Green Haus – and latest recruit, Lobster Inc., which offers a wickedly indulgent lobster feast, complete with a bottle of bubbly.
The presentation and quality are restaurant-standard with each home delivery box including pre-prepared ingredients and full cooking instructions (with photos!), to make the process of cooking at home as simple and hassle-free as possible.
The HOME-X boxes are recyclable, and each kit is perfectly portioned for two guests and includes a bottle of wine – or, in the case of The Cheese Club, half a bottle of port.
Following a similar format to the innovative Six by Nico restaurants, the Home by Nico dine at home experience involves an ever-changing four-course tasting menu, themed around memories or places.
For our Home by Nico tasting menu, we were treated to mouth-watering Thai street food, reminiscent of the fresh and fragrant flavours that are a speciality of Bangkok street vendors.
For April, you can pre-order the “Cooking Vietnam” menu, packed with flavour that promises to give you a real taste of the Southeast Asian country. Enjoy chef Simeone’s interpretation of Vietnamese cuisine with duck bao buns, clay pot aubergine, hot and sour pho and
his own special spin on a classic dessert using Vietnamese coffee. The meal also comes with a bottle of artisanal white wine.
For meat aficionados, Chateau-X offers the most decadent and delicious chateaubriand home-dining experience. The meal comes beautifully packaged like a parcel from an upmarket fashion brand, with each component presented in clearly labelled separate boxes, including the 28-day aged and marinated chateaubriand for two (complete with sauce), and seasonal vegetables such as truffle mac & cheese, honey roasted vegetables and colcannon potatoes.
Our pudding was a classic tiramisu and the wine was from Italy.

HOT CHOCOLATE FOR THE SOUL 80NOIR ULTRA
Hot chocolate has never tasted so good – or been so good for you! You’re definitely in for a treat when you try bespoke dark chocolate company 80Noir Ultra’s hot chocolate.
Founder and former England Badminton player Carole Armitage designed her nutritious, soothing quality blend of hot chocolate after suffering from low blood sugar levels while competing and discovering that ordinary hot chocolate was packed full of starch thickeners and flavourings.
Her award-winning blend, which is made by renowned chocolatiers in France using only the best cacao minus the usual bitterness, is aimed at promoting positive wellbeing and fitness.
Studies have shown that dark chocolate can improve collagen and boost circulation, reduce stress and anxiety, and lower the risk of cardiovascular disease among other health benefits.
Chocoholics will find themselves in heaven with chocolate beads for drinking with either hot milk or water; training bars to snack on, and vegan-friendly dark chocolate bars, which can be savoured as a bar or melted as a hot chocolate.
For Carole, enjoying good quality dark chocolate is more than just an occasional indulgence: “It’s a daily dose of greatness that boosts the body and de-stresses the mind.”
COFFEE FIX
COFFEE & KIN
Another beverage we’ve all been imbibing like there’s no tomorrow is coffee.
Coffee & Kin, which specialises in sustainable coffee pod and bean subscriptions, is now offering a Coffee & Chocolate Box, available by monthly subscription or as a one-off treat.
Each month, customers will receive a month’s worth of speciality coffee and two bars of exotic chocolate – with names like wild orange and hazelnut & cardamom – made by a small independent luxury chocolatier.
All you need to do is choose your coffee – beans, ground or biodegradable and compostable capsules – and pick either milk, dark or a mix of chocolate.
Founders Ruth and Mark Oldfield from Northumberland are committed to ethically sourcing their coffee and only work with coffee growers that are independently certified. They also donate £1 per box to the Blurt Foundation, which helps young people and adults affected by depression in the UK.
WWhilst I feel this ode to Dolly should include a riot of rhinestones, this season's Americana inspired trends have a distinctly more vintage wild west vibe. From native american prints and fringing, to frayed denim and gaucho hats, but there's also a good dose of Dolly to channel in the form of western shirts, neck scarves and cowboy boots.
The western trend, it seems, is becoming a wardrobe staple. It's the micro trend that keeps re-emerging and now seems like the perfect time to celebrate the American Dream.
Every western inspired fashionista worth her grits will already own a pair of Isabel Marant cowboy boots or a Chloe Marcie cross body bag. If you're reticent to go the whole hog, try a smattering of boho western accessories or a casually thrown on poncho.
But by all means, glamorise the look with rhinestones if you're feeling truly grateful to Dolly (blonde wig and stetson optional).
