It doesn’t get more quintessentially British than a chauffeur-driven visit to the Crown Jewels, followed by afternoon tea and a gemmology masterclass at heritage jewellers Garrard. When you book in at The Peninsula London, this is justoneoftheunforgettableexperiencesonoffer.

Gliding through the streets of London in a Rolls-Royce Phantom, the first thing you notice is the silence. Almost no outside noise penetrates the triple-glazed windowsofourluxurywheels.

We’re headed to the Tower of London to see the Crown Jewels, and what better waytotravelthaninsuchdecadent-dare wesayit-regalstyle?

It’s all part of a Peninsula Academy programme created by The Peninsula London to offer guests unforgettable cultural, historical and creative experiences during their stay. Our excursion couldn’t be more quintessentially British: a special Crown Jewelsguidedtour,followedbyafternoon teaandaprivategemmologymasterclass at the opulent hotel’s in-house Garrard boutique.

Assembling in the cobbled courtyard of The Peninsula, we jump in a chauffeurdriven“PeninsulaGreen”Rolls-Royce,part of a fleet of 13 customised vehicles at guests’ disposal. On arrival at the Tower, we’regreetedbyanHistoricRoyalPalaces guide,whoushersuspastthequeuesand into the dimly lit Jewel House, where some of the world’s most famous gems areondisplay.

It’s like entering an Aladdin’s Cave, filled with such celebrated pieces as the legendaryKoh-i-Noordiamond,setinthe crown worn by the late Queen Mother, and the Black Prince’s Ruby, nestled in theImperialStateCrown.

The room’s relative darkness only serves to enhance the natural sparkle of these extraordinary jewels, guarded in the historic fortress since 1661 and part of a unique working collection of royal regalia still regularly used by the monarch for ceremonies such as the StateOpeningofParliament.

At the heart of the collection are the coronation regalia, the sacred objects used during the coronation ceremony, denotingthepowersandresponsibilities of the monarch. It’s quite something to see up-close the Sovereign’s Sceptre with Cross, which contains the world’s largest colourless cut diamond, the Sovereign’s Orb and the Coronation Spoon – all most recently used at the 2023 Coronation of King Charles III and QueenCamilla.

Our guide points out the Imperial State Crown and Queen Mary’s Crown, originally made by Garrard, the Royal Family’s first Crown Jeweller, in 1911, and subsequently modified for Queen Camilla.

Reunitedwithourwaitingdrivers,weare whisked back to The Peninsula for the second part of our immersive itinerary, kicking off with the hotel’s signature champagne afternoon tea at the stylish Garrardboutique.Oneofthehighlightsis being shown archival replicas of three royal tiaras, including the Lovers Knot Tiara, worn by both Princess Diana and Catherine, Princess of Wales. We learn that the pretty Fringe Tiara, donned by thelateQueenforherweddingin1947to PrincePhilip,snappedintwowhilebeing fitted by her hairdresser on the morning of the big day itself. At the Queen’s insistence, the tiara was rushed – with a police escort, no less – to the Garrard workshop, where it was repaired and returned to the palace within two hours. The tiara was most recently worn by PrincessBeatriceatherweddingin2020.

Duringourclasswithmastergemmologist SarahRadcliffe,weareshownhowtousea smallmagnifyingglassknownasa“loupe”, which she describes as her profession’s “bestfriend”,andwhichisusedtoexamine gemstones for fractures, inclusions and colourvariations.

The study of inclusions, she tells us, is “one of the most thrilling aspects” of learning gemmology because of how it can reveal the origin of a stone, both geographically andgeologically.

“Naturalimperfectionsorinclusionsarelike thefingerprintofthegem,tellingthestory of how it formed deep within the earth,” explains Sarah. “The types of inclusions found in gemstones, whether they’re ‘whisps’ or ‘feathers’ in diamonds or distinctive shapes like ‘water lilies’ in peridots and ‘horse tails’ in demantoid garnets, can offer valuable clues about the stone’sorigins.”

As we examine a range of glittering gemstones with our loupes, the gemmologist revealshowtanzaniteandsapphireareoftenconfusedbecausetheyarebothblue. “To the untrained eye, they can look similar, especially when viewed under certain lighting conditions,” she says. “However, they are distinct in terms of their composition,colourandorigins.Sapphirescomeinarangeofcolours-everycolour of the rainbow in fact - but the classic and most recognized variety is blue. Tanzanite, on the other hand, is known for its unique blue-violet hue. It’s also pleochroic, while sapphires are not, which means it can show different colours –blue,violetandpurple-dependingontheangleoflight.”

SapphiresaresynonymouswithGarrard,continuesSarah,whoaddsthattheyhave featured in some of the British heritage jeweller’s most notable creations over its 290-year history, including Princess Diana’s famous sapphire cluster engagement ring and a sapphire cluster brooch that Prince Albert commissioned for Queen Victoriatowearontheirweddingday.Itwasin1843thatQueenVictoriaappointed Garrard as the first ever official Crown Jewellers, a position the house held until 2007, responsible for creating many of the Royal Family’s most significant jewels during that tenure. It still holds a Royal Warrant from King Charles, bequeathed whilehewasPrinceofWales.

“Everystonehasthepotentialtosurprise.There’sanindescribablejoyindiscovering the unique qualities of a gemstone, whether it’s an inclusion or an unexpected burstofnaturalcolour,”enthusesSarah,concludingourmemorableprivatesession.

Other Peninsula Academy curated experiences include a Children’s Adventure Quest in partnership with Sharky and George, an automotive experience in conjunction with Brooklands Museum, and a rare opportunity to sit for Royal portraitistRalphHeimans.

As anyone who’s ever deliberated over the placement of an ornament will tell you, decoratingaChristmastreeisverymuchanactofself-expression.Perhapsyoufavoura maximalistapproach,loadingupcreakingbrancheswithasmuchtinselandfairylights astheycanpossiblystand(Christmasis,afterall,atimewhenacertainamountofgood taste goes out the window). For others, decorating a tree is about restraint and the meticulousspacingofbaubles.Whetheryouthinkcarefullyaboutyourcolourscheme before you start, or just throw things on with wild abandon, it’s fair to say that how a persondecoratestheirtreerevealssomethingaboutthem.

With this in mind, it seems only natural to begin to wonder, how would the most expressive people express themselves in tree form? It’s a question Claridge’s have been asking–andanswering–overthecourseofthe last 15 years. Each Christmas, the historic Mayfair hotel invites a different designer to create a spectacular tree for their grand foyer. It’s become a much-loved and eagerly anticipated tradition, drawing in flocks of visitors each season who rush to see the new tree.Andthisyear,it’sPaul’sturn.

Paul has long had a personal connection to Claridge’s, often enjoying his Christmas lunch there, so when the call came through, he jumped at the chance. Along with his team, he has created a tree which reflects the eclectic, whimsical sensibility for which he’s best known. The branches of the 20ft tree – which was unveiled on 20th November – are filled with 100 specially made birdhouses, as well as mechanical contraptions built by artist Nik Ramage. Around the base of the tree is a gathering of ‘off-cut’ creatures – curious critters made fromscrapwoodbyHackney-based Studiomama.

Kia Schwaninger is the high jewellery designer creating exceptional customisable pieces you’ll want to tell your friends about - but then again, with suchaccessiblepricepoints,youmayprefertokeephernametoyourself…

Whisper the name ‘Kia Schwaninger’ selectively to your friends. She is the seasoned high jewellery designer creating customisable pieces that come with apleasinglyaccessiblepricetag.

New York-based, Swiss-raised Kia has beenonthesmartset’sradaracrossthe Pond for some time, designing one-off works of art for both friends and a loyal band of word-of-mouth clients. And now, under the brand name Kia Schwan, she’s produced her first collection, Colorhythms, a joyful and deeply personal celebration of some of her favourite influences and places, from Art Deco architecture to an oldworldsweetshop.

The beauty of these exuberant pieces, handmade in New York City’s high jewelleryworkshops,isthattheycanbe modified to create the perfect colour combination of gemstones and preciousmetalsforeachclient.

The collection comprises the Disc suite of pendants, brooches, earrings, collar necklaces and rings, which work with arcs of saturated ice-cream-coloured stones to create geometric shapes that recall Bauhaus furniture and Art Deco storefronts. There are also the Abacus rings, available in two sizes, featuring stacksof“juicy”stonelozengesencased in precious metal, set with diamond accents.

WhileKiahascraftedsucheye-catching Abacus combinations as carved chrysoprase, turquoise and malachite, paired with yellow sapphire cabochons and diamonds, and carved carnelian and tiger’s eye, paired with yellow sapphirecabochonsanddiamonds,the colourpossibilitiesareendless.

“Clients come up with colourways I’ve never thought of, to match their personalities,” says the designer, who is talking to us on a flying visit to London tolaunchherdebutcollection.Lowkey andinstantlylikeable,sheshowsusher ownring,adeliciouslytactileconfection combining malachite, yellow sapphire cabochon and lapis lazuli. “I like to see how the stones interact with each other; they really need to make each other sing. Often, I put stones together but [realise] they don’t enhance each other.”

“Evenafterhavingworkedwithsomeof the world’s most renowned stones, I find a semi-translucent, juicy, lavendercoloured carved chalcedony just as alluring as a flawless diamond,” she continues. “I’m also simply in love with colour, from bright blue turquoise to fiery red spinel to a deep green malachite. In general, my pieces are happycoloursandcombinations.”

“I like to see how the stones interact with each other; they really need to make each other sing. My pieces are happy colours and combinations.”

Kia’s credentials are second to none. After graduating in jewellery design at the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design, she secured an apprenticeship at Tiffany & Co.inNewYorkbeforewinningaplaceatRichemont’sCreativeAcademyinMilan.This then led to an internship in Paris with Van Cleef & Arpels followed by a job there as junior designer. After three years, she was transferred to New York, where she led the brand’scustomisationteam,beforemovingin2016toHarryWinstonasdesigndirector, overseeingthedevelopmentofnewhighjewellerycollections.“Ilearnedalotandwas in charge of the design team for three-and-a-half years, but I was missing hands-on designingbecauseIhadnotime;itwasmoredirecting,”shereflects. Itwasthecovidpandemicthatpropelledhertosetuponherown.“I’dhadmyfirstson in 2019 and then the pandemic hit, and it felt like time for a change. I missed designing,” says Kia, who has two sons Arlo, five, and Cosmo, nearly three, with her SwissbusinessmanhusbandMichael.“Istartedmakingbeadnecklacesasachildand had talked about doing my own jewellery brand for ever - for about 20 years. It was alwaysatthebackofmymind,but[covid]gavemethefinalpushtogiveitatry.”

In-between creating bespoke pieces for private clients, Kia, who does all her own drawings, started work on her debut collection, determined that customisation remained at the heart of it. “My whole career, I loved that aspect of jewellery, that you cancreatesomethingthatisuniquetotheperson.Ialsolovethefactthatthesepieces arenotjustsomethingyoubuyofftheshelf.Theytakealittlemoretimeandthought.” Her influences are as varied as they are surprising. Born in New Orleans where her orthodontist father was a university lecturer, she recalls being captivated by colourful jazzpostersinthefamilyhome.AlthoughthefamilyrelocatedtotheirnativeLucernein Switzerlandwhenshewasthree,theyreturnedeachsummertothevibrantAmerican city,anexperiencewhichleftanindeliblemarkonthisfledglingcreativespirit.

Another key influence is the work of French artist Robert Delaunay, who, together with his wife Sonia, co-founded the Orphism art movement, noted for its use of strong colours and geometric shapes. “There is this very famous Robert Delaunay painting [Rhythm No.3]IsawinParisattheMuseed’artModerne, that has stuck with me,” explains Kia, whose collection was inspired by the rhythm and movement of Delaunay’s exploration of colour. An iconic pastel-pink pastry shop, Angelo Brocato,inNewOrleansisanotherinfluenceas is Miami’s famous Art Deco district. “Art Deco was always one of my favourite eras of jewellery,” she says. “I love the twist of pastel tonesthatcometoplayinstones.”

“I loved that you can create something that is unique to the person. I spend hours on these pieces, so it’s lovely to have them recognised and loved.”

Whilethehighlevelofcraftsmanshipandmeticulousattentiontodetailrightfullyput KiaSchwanpiecesinthe“realmofhighjewellery”,thepricepointsarenotinthesame bracket,whichwillcomeaswelcomenewstofansofthebrand.WiththeAbacusrings starting at £6000, the collection is “a little more accessible”, as Kia says. “I see a lot of jewellery that’s often not well crafted in terms of my price range, so I hope to attract customerslookingforsomethingpersonalandinteresting.” So,whoisherclient?“Mostofthetimeitiswomenbuyingforthemselves,”shereveals. “Theyaremainlyintheir40sbuyingagiftforthemselves:sometimesforabigbirthday orifthey’rehavingababy,orjustforthefunofit.”

“I’ve also redesigned some engagement rings [in the case] of divorce,” she adds wryly.

One of the most satisfying aspects of her job is reinterpreting heirloom pieces for customers and creating a “narrative arc” that will connect one generation with the next. She tells of how she recently repurposed a broken vintage jade bangle for two daughters after their mother died, working with a stonecutter to add the mother’s garnet birth stone to create two newbanglesinjade,garnetanddiamonds, setin18kpalladiumwhitegold.

“I feel very proud when I see someone wearing [one of her pieces],” she says. “It feels very special. The client who ordered this jade and garnet bangle wears it every day now. “The stonecutter called me a magician,[because]outofsomethingreally sad, I created a moment; something that makes her really happy. She wears a lot more green now and has adjusted her wardrobe to her bangle. I spend hours on these pieces, so it’s lovely to have them recognisedandloved.”

While she plans to add new pieces to the Colorhythms collection, including more earrings and a new line of men’s rings, she’s intent on creating one-of-akind pieces using gemstones that have been sitting in her jewellery box for some time. “My great uncle was a radiologist and loved travelling, and he giftedmealotofstonesfromthe1970s: lovely aquamarines, large sapphires, great for making pendants, and some lab-grown alexandrites,” she reveals, smiling. “It’s a lovely treasure trove to come across, and the next step is to workonthose.”

She admits that she finds the logistics of running a new business challenging attimes.“Iloveitbutit’salotofworkas it’s only me,” she laughs. “For a while, I didallthesalesandshipping-thingsas a designer you didn’t necessarily have to learn before. “Designers love to have a quietandcreativespace,whereasthisis quite the opposite and means getting outofmycomfortzone.”

Although she’s aware she will need more assistance as her business expands, she is determined to let it groworganically.“Ilikethepaceweare growing,”shesayssimply.“Istilllovethe personalcontactwithallmyclientsand walking them through the process of customising a piece. That is very important to me, and I feel if I grow a lot,Iwilllosethat.

Samantha Siu is deeply committed to protecting and nurturingabetterworldforfuturegenerations. We had the privilege of speaking with Samantha following the launch of her exclusive ‘Bespoke’ SS25 campaign, where eachpiecenarratesalovestoryasdistinctasyourown.

Congratulations on the stunning launch of your new "Bespoke" collection, which showcases necklaces, bracelets, and earrings thatweloveatMillionair.Whatinspiredyouto createthiscampaign?

Thankyousomuch!TheBespokecampaignis an extension of our A Love Affair collection, which began with necklaces and has now grown to include earrings and bracelets. The idea behind Bespoke is all about personal expression and versatility. We wanted to showcase how our jewellery can be worn in waysthatreflecteachindividual'suniquestyle. Whether layering, stacking, or even transforming bracelets into necklaces, the campaigncelebratescreativity.Withtheriseof maximalisminfashion,wesawanopportunity topushtheboundariesofhowjewellerycanbe styled—encouraging people to be bold, mix metals, and embrace their own statement pieces.

Every piece is crafted to be versatile, allowing for various styling options that reflect individual flair. Is this influenced byyourapproachtowearingjewellery?

Absolutely! I believe jewellery should be as dynamic as the person wearing it. In my ownlife,Igravitatetowardspiecesthatcan be worn in multiple ways and fit different occasions or moods. This versatility allows for more creativity in styling and gives the wearer the freedom to express themselves in a new way every time. Our multi-wear pieces, for example, can be reversed or layered and adjusted, offering different looks with just one piece. I want our jewellery to feel integral to someone’s personalstyle,notjustanaccessory.

Where does your design inspiration come from, and How long does it take to create a piece of Samantha Siu jewellery?

Mydesigninspirationoftencomesfrommy travels and experiences exploring different cultures and histories. Once I have the concept, I move to sketching and wax carving, which allows me to translate the ideaintoatangibleform.Wecastthepiece and select the perfect stones, working closely with our artisans. Each piece can take several months to create because we’re meticulous about the details and craftsmanship—it’s all about quality and ensuringeverypieceistrulyspecial.

What is the most challenging aspect of runningyourbusiness?

One of the biggest challenges is balancing the artistry and craftsmanship that are at theheartofourbrandwiththedemandsof running a business in today’s fast-paced world.

We’recommittedtotakingourtimetocreatesustainable,high-qualityjewellery,which canbeatoddswiththemarket'sgrowingdesireforinstantgratification.Wemuststay true to our values while evolving to meet modern consumers' needs. Our multi-wear, sustainablepieceshelpbridgethatgap.

What’sbeenthemostsignificantpointinyourcareersofar?

Launchingmycompanyanditssisternonprofit,thePhoenixInternationalFoundation, hasbeenoneofthemostsignificantmomentsinmycareer.Throughthefoundation, we donate 10% of our profits, allowing us to combine our love for jewellery with philanthropy meaningfully. Your passion for jewellery design started in childhood while working with your family. What essential life and business lessons did you learn from that experience,andhowhaveyouincorporatedthemintoyourbusiness?

Growing up in my family’s jewellery business taught me the value of hard work and perseverance. I learned that the best designs come from a place of passion, not just profit. I also gained an appreciation for teamwork and collaboration, which is somethingI’vebroughtintoSamanthaSiuNewYork.Ourbrandoperateslikeafamily —weleanoneachother,pusheachothercreatively,andareallinvestedinthesuccess ofthebusiness.It’saboutbuildingsomethingmeaningfultogether.

Yes, the Rising Phoenix Necklace holds a special place in my heart. It’s the first piece in the ‘A Love Affair’ collection, inspired by my travels with my first love. The symbolism behindthephoenix—representingbothfemale strength in Asian cultures and rebirth in Western cultures—captures the intersection of my heritage and the essence of the Samantha Siu brand. Like the rest of the collection, I love that this necklace is reversible, offering differentwaystowearit.It’snotjustapieceof jewellery;it’sastoryoftransformation,love,and cultural connection. With the launch of your 'Bespoke' line now underway, what are your professional, personal,andphilanthropicgoalsfor2025?

For 2025, I want to continue growing as a designer and entrepreneur, always open to new experiences and inspirations. Philanthropically, we aim to increase our contributionstocauseswebelievein,especially education and conservation. Your journey with Atelier ExC is inspiring. What sparked your entrepreneurial path and led you to create this remarkable brand?

I grew up surrounded by fabric and fashion, my mother is a couture designer, my father and brother sell men’s suits, my grandfatherdealsinfabrics,andmyauntis a seamstress. From a young age, fashion intrigued me not as a practical choice but as an art form. A childhood photo of me and my brother dressing up in my mother’srealclothesratherthancostumes hints at how early this passion began. My stylish mother greatly influenced me, and working in her boutique as a child further honedmyinterest.

Though I excelled in drawing and learning, I initially pursued architecture at KU Leuven (Sint-Lucas) after finishing HumanioraatSint-BavoinGhent,Belgium. However, while architecture was interesting,itdidn’tfulfillme.

After completing a bachelor’s degree and starting my master’s, I realized I was unhappy and decided to follow my heart into fashion styling, a decision I’ve never regretted.

In 2016, I launched my own label, Atelier ExC (Ebru X Cagdas), honoring my husband, who has been my biggest supporter.By2018,ExCFashionHousewas established after much hard work. Starting wasthehardestpart, butIlearnedtheimportanceoftakingthat first step, embracing challenges, and sharing ideas with others for feedback and freshperspectives.

Your designs exude confidence and individuality. How do your experiences shape creations that empower women?

Working in the fashion industry ensures thatnodayiseverthesameandthattime moves quickly. Inspiration comes from different areas however we find imagining our muses' different moods and evolving personality helps us creatively. If I have to explain my creations in 3 words : ‘Mature’, ‘Vivid’, ‘Feminine’. I love simplicity and cleanlines,clothesthatcanbestyledupto bringoutthepersonalityofeachclient. The ability for growth is self-knowledge and to never underestimate yourself. A simplebutelegantandinspiringmessageI want to spread into the world. To me, clothing is a form of self-expression, there are hints about who you are in what you wear. Self-confidence is the best outfit, rock it and own it! I always know what I wantandhowIwantit!

What has been your proudest moment or milestone with Atelier EXC so far? How does that achievement continue to inspire you and your team?

Working in fashion ensures no day is the same. Inspiration comes from imagining our muses' moods and personalities, which guides my designs—mature, vivid, and feminine. I value simplicity and clean lines, creating versatile pieces that express individuality. For me, clothing is self-expression, and self-confidence is the best outfit. With hard work and growth, I aim to inspireandevolveasadesignerandperson. We’ve kept our Belgian market exclusive with select partners while organically expanding abroad, driven by interest from places like Dubai. Despite opportunities, including offers from Italy's Rinascente, we prioritize sustainability and branding over rapid growth. As you look to the future, what’s next for you and Atelier EXC? Are there any upcoming projects or dreams you’re excited to share with the world?

It's fantastic to see your vision resulting in positive results. The design of Atelier ExC has become very recognizable. Creating a signature requires not only time but also repetition to effectivelybecomeasignature.Itfeelsverygoodtoknowsoclearlywhoandwhatweareand whatourbrandstandsfor.Everydayweworkwithateamtoperfectourbrand.Thebarishigh. Icontinuetochallengemyselfeveryseasonandeveryday!

IwanttocreateaninternationalimpactwithAtelierExC.Inthefuture,Iwantthebrandtobe sold on every continent. I am someone with big dreams and a lot of ambition. That usually translates into an attitude in which I feel like I haven't experienced my best moment yet. I knowwhenastepisbeingtakentowardsmyultimategoal,butIalsoknowthateverythingis currently the path to it. The goal has not yet been achieved! That is why I find it difficult to be proud of something that I have achieved. DaniellaPedraglio,a29-year-olddesignerfromPeru,isthe visionary mind behind Canella Brand Shoes, a company she founded over six years ago with a mission to blend creativity and sustainability. HOW HAS PERUVIAN HERITAGE SHAPED YOUR VISION FOR CANELLA BRAND SHOES, AND HOW DO YOU INCORPORATE IT INTO YOUR DESIGNS ANDSTORYTELLING?

From the beginning, my goal with Canella Brand Shoes hasbeentocelebratecultureandsharePeru’srichhistory with the world. Each collection is grounded in research, allowing me to create designs that are not just products but meaningful stories. I draw inspiration from Peruvian heritage, its materials, patterns, traditions and bring these to life through unique designs and storytelling. Whether it’s exploring weaving techniques for my upcoming collection or honoring the Chimú culture’s empowering legacy, every detail is a tribute to Peru’s identity, reimaginedthroughcontemporaryfashion.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DESIGN AND WHAT ARE YOU WEARING OVER THE FESTIVESEASON?

My favorite designs evolve with the seasons, but a few always leave a lasting impression. For summer, the Sunset heels are a standout. They came to life through an organic process of experimenting directly with laces on the last, resulting in an unexpected, striking design that has become a best-seller. And any pair of heels with sustainable paiche (upcycled fish leather), are true statement piecesthatblendstyleandconsciousness.

For winter, I’m drawn to the Cumbi loafers. Their custom last and distinctive silhouette perfectly capture the essence of Canella’s identity. FurthermoreI’malsoespeciallyproudofouralpaca sandals, which feature handwoven Peruvianinspired patterns, and our latest boots that marry craftsmanship, innovation, and storytelling seamlessly. These designs not only reflect my personal style but also the heart of our brand’s philosophy.

FEMALE EMPOWERMENT IS CENTRAL TO YOUR BRAND'S ETHOS. HOW DO YOUR DESIGNS AND VISION REFLECT THIS?

Empowerment is at the core of Canella and who I am. Each piece I design is to make a bold statement, using unique elements like squared heels and custom lasts to ensure every shoe has its own personality. Women are always at the centre of my storytelling, I want every design to celebrate their strength, individuality,andconfidence.

Forme,empowermentalsomeanstaking control of your journey, which I’ve embraced as an entrepreneur. With Canella, I aim to inspire women to chase their dreams, be resilient, and own their unique paths, both through our designs andthevalueswerepresent.

WHATWOULDYOUCONSIDERTOBE THEHIGHLIGHTOFYOURCAREERSO FAR?

Mymostsignificantachievementtodatehas been the opportunity to collaborate with Spanish designer Odette Alvarez for Madrid Fashion Week this year. This collaboration has been a pivotal milestone for both me as a designer and for Canella Brand Shoes. Showcasing my designs on the runway allowed me to push the boundaries of my creativity, turning my vision into a global presentation. The entire experience was incredibly rewarding, and it was fulfilling to havesomeonebelieveinmyworkenoughto offermesucharemarkableopportunity.

The months leading up to the show were intense, as we worked through everything from design to production and the final presentation. However, from our very first meeting,IhadaclearvisionofwhatIwanted to convey, and I felt an immediate connectionwithOdette.

Another major accomplishment was partnering with Ferragamo. Presenting my finalworktoJamesFerragamoandreceiving his positive feedback was a surreal and humbling moment, one I still cherish. Both of these experiences have not only been deeply gratifying but have also made me incrediblyproudofmyjourneyasadesigner.

WHAT

ARE YOUR LONG-TERM GOALS FOR CANELLA BRAND SHOES IN THE GLOBAL LUXURY MARKET, AND HOW DO YOU ENVISION THE BRAND EVOLVINGIN2025?

My vision for Canella Brand Shoes is to position it as a luxury brand that not only stands out for its distinctive identity but also for its commitment to sustainability. Every piece we create has meaning, blending exceptional craftsmanship with innovative design. Moving forward, I want to focus on expanding into Europe and the UK, particularly in the Nordic region, while remaining true to our unique, disruptive style.

Sustainability is at the heart of our growth plans. We are dedicated to exploring new, eco-friendly materials and incorporating them into our collections. Alongside this, we aim to expand our line of iconic designs and pursue collaborations with other creatives. Thisyear,ourcollaborationatMadridFashion Week was a huge step, and I see these partnerships as key to shaping Canella's future.

In 2025, we plan to strengthen our presence at major international trade shows, starting with Modefabriek in Amsterdam. These opportunities will help us reach a wider globalaudienceandfurtherestablishCanella asaleaderincontemporaryluxuryfashion.

There will be tough days, but if you remind yourself why you started, your passion will guide you. Celebrate every small win along the way because each one takes you closer to your ultimate goal.

Starting a brand is challenging. There will be highs, but also times when things don’t go as planned. You’ll face moments of doubt and isolation, but staying confident in your vision is key. There’s nothing more fulfilling than knowing you’re doing whatyoulove.

Theonlylimitsaretheonesyouset.Fearwillalways bethere,butperseverancewillbringyouhappiness. Keep pushing forward, and trust that your hard workwilleventuallypayoff.MyjourneywithCanella has been driven by passion, and I know the effort willpayoffintheend.

Throughout your remarkable modelling career, were there any mentors or influential figures who significantly shaped your journey?

I was fortunate to have an incredible agent, Jonathan Phang, who guided me throughoutmycareer.KarlLagerfeldalsoplayedapivotalrole;hetookmeunderhis wingandofferedmeexclusiveopportunitieswithChanelandChloé.Karlwasdeeply involved in my development, even taking photographs and providing invaluable advicethathelpedmebecomecomfortableinfrontofthecamera

Could you share one of your most memorable moments on the runway or during a shoot?

Opening for Givenchy was an unforgettable experience; during the fitting for the show, Alexander McQueen started cutting a satin coat with his shears, and I remember the seamstresses looking shocked! It was an honour to open the show, especiallyknowingthesignificanceofthechangesatGivenchy.

You transitioned from modelling to becoming an entrepreneur. How did that shift happen?

My journey has been very organic. I am always open to new opportunities, driven by curiosityandaloveforlearning.WhenIwasgivenachancetodriveinmotorsports,I embraced it wholeheartedly, and it grew into a new career. Life is precious, and I believe in seizing every opportunity that will lead me to things like MasterChef and manyfulfillingexperiences.

You have also entered the hospitality industry with The Half Moon pub in Kirdford. What inspired this venture?

MasterChef sparked my passion for food. As a model, I hadn’t explored it, but the show made me fall in love with the culinary journey. I went from cooking essential dishes to truly appreciating the art of creating meals. So, when The Half Moon came up, I jumped at the chance to be part of the hospitality world. It’s a labour of love—full of hard work but incredibly rewarding.

What role does the community play in your brands? Do you work with local suppliers?

Absolutely.Supportinglocalbusinessesisvital.Atthepub,wesourcemost of our ingredients within a 25-mile radius, collaborating with local farmers and artisans. It’s wonderful to connect with so many talented people who arepassionateabouttheirwork.Wehavetosupportoneanother!

What is the idea behind Indio’s Foods?

It’sabouthigh-quality,frozen-readymeals.Lockdowninspiredmetofinda way to make good food accessible to busy people. Indio’s Foods offers comforting, homemade-style meals with quality ingredients, perfect for familieswhowantconvenientyetnourishingoptions.

Tell us about your beauty project, Skin and Tonic. How do you ensure it’s eco-friendly and effective?

Skin and Tonic is a line I joined early on because I wanted something pure for my skin products that matched the clean lifestyle I believe in. Our formulashavenomorethanseveningredients,usingBritish-grown,locally sourced elements wherever possible. What excites you most about launching a new brand? What challenges do you face?

Every startup encounters significant hurdles, particularly with supply chains and rising costs. What keeps me motivated is a mix of optimism and adaptability. I thrive on thinking creatively to navigate challenges and embracethecuriositythatlifepresentstome.

Your brand, Manava, promotes sustainable fashion; what strategies do you use to minimise its environmental footprint while maintaining quality and style?

Manava’s organic loungewear is close to my heart. The line aims to reduce fashion waste by using sustainable fabrics or reusing pieces from the cutting room floor and minimising environmental impact. Seeing how we can make a positive differenceintheindustryisfantastic.

Besides business, you are also involved in motorsports and TV. What keeps you motivatedtoexplorenewpaths?

I’m passionate about new experiences. I enjoy relaxed and unscripted projects where creativity can flow naturally. Being able to interact with people in these spaces brings me joy and keeps me inspired.

What does Minnessak stand for, and what sets you apart from other brands?

MinnessakistheSwedishwordforkeepsake.Ouraimistomakebagsthatpeoplewill love and cherish and want to keep forever. It’s a combination of factors. First and foremostit’sthecreativityofourHeadofDesign,JasSehmbi.He’sbeendesigningbags for40yearsandhadaverysuccessfulbrandcalledJasMBwhichsoldinover500stores all over the world. Sadly, it was a victim of Covid. Our ethos also helps to set us apart fromalotofbrandsasdoesthefactthatwemanufactureinLondon.

Why did you decide to design recycled bags?

Jashasusedrecycledandrepurposedmaterialsinhiscollectionsoverthelast30years. Usingwhatalreadyexistsisevenmorecriticalintoday’sworld.

How do you decide on each season’s designs and collections?

Asabagbrand,we’renotseasonalinthesamewaythatanapparelbrandis.Wehavea core collection to add and/or subtract from each season. This depends on what styles are selling, what new deadstock materials Jas finds and what he feels the market is lookingfor.

Where do you produce your bags, and is it essential to be able to trace production?

Currently, we produce to order in our workshop in London. We do not carry stock. Managingourownproductionensuresthatourbagsaremadeaccordingtoourethos, givingusflexibilityandenablingustofulfilmid-seasonorders.

The ethos of Minnessak is sustainability as well as fair practice in how we interact with others, from employees to suppliers and clients.

Have you found that the present economic situation has changed how people shop, and if so, how?

Without a doubt, the way people shop has changed. To start with, people are buying less. They are taking longer to make their purchase decisions,andtheyarelookingformorevalue.

What is in the future for Minnessak, and do you have any exciting new launches in the pipeline?

We are very excited about the future. Jas’ creativity gives us many opportunities. Since we launched in September 2023 we have been approached by a number of brands asking if we could use their deadstock materials in a collaboration. We have just agreed our first collaborationandwillbeannouncingmoredetails ofthisinthenewyear.

It certainly used to be the case for me. I felt obliged to accept every invitation without scheduling time to care for myself. Pedalling hard just to keep up the pace, it’s no wonder I felt fragile and exhausted.

I also pursued the one goal I now tell my clients no woman should ever have: the pursuit of perfection. I placed immense pressure on myself to make Christmas flawless - taking on too much, refusing offers of help, and never prioritising my own needs. In the end, this meant I couldn’twaitfortheseasontobeover. Feeling anxious from the endless stream of Instagram posts about the perfect Christmas? Don’t be fooled - they only exist amongst a truckload of real-life chaotic moments that never get documented.

It took a life-changing health shock for me to finally prioritise my well-being, no matterwhatwasgoingonaroundme.By letting go of some control, setting boundaries, and creating space for myself, I now take a more balanced and mindfulapproachtothefestiveseason.

I also know how tempting it can be to write off December when it comes to your health goals, telling yourself you’ll get to them in January. But does that really make sense? Imagine, instead, starting the new year on a high note with healthyhabitsalreadyinplace.

It’s not about saying no to all the parties; it’s about saying yes to the best and no to the rest. Because let’s face it, as we get older, we just don’t bounce back from a party quite like we used to (three-day hangover, anyone?). It’s about indulging in the parts of Christmas that bring you joy without sacrificing the healthhabitsthatkeepyoustrong.

I’m not saying you should give up all the chocolates, switch to sparkling water, or be in bed by 10 pm. That’s just not realistic, and we all deserve to wind down at this time of year. However, I do have some suggestions on how to avoid the physicalandmentalstressthatcanreallyruinagoodChristmas.

GET ORGANISED

Making planning ahead your superpower will increase your chances of conserving your energy throughout the holiday season.

Startwithsomeseriousscheduling.Howmanynightsoutcanyou enjoy without ruining your week, tired or hungover? Then, decide what events you truly want to attend. Remember - just because you’refreedoesn’tmeanyouhavetosayyes.Avoidacceptinglastminute invitations unless it’s something you’re genuinely excited about, and if you do, swap it for another night out on your calendar.

Also, make sure you schedule your workouts. But be realistic: adapt your regular training routine if it’s unlikely you can keep it up.Justdon’tabandonitentirely.

When cooking in the run-up to Christmas, make an extra batch to freeze. Having backup meals in your freezer will help you avoid the temptation of a takeaway when you’re tired or hungover. Just don’tforgettoputareminderinyourcalendartodefrostit!

Another thing worth planning is your wardrobe. ‘What to wear’ anxiety can spoil a night out and give your confidence a wobble if you don’t feel like you’re looking your best. Put together some ideasnowtohelpavoidthestressoflast-minutepanic.

THROUGHOUT DECEMBER

Everyone thinks of January as the time to start a new healthy habit, but why wait until then? Starting that habit today will give you a powerful sense of achievement. Want to start meditation? Download an app and start now. Don’t drink enough water? This is the time to change that. Hydrating properly is a key health habit. Set yourself a daily target of at least two litres a day (more ifyou’replanningondrinkingalcohol).

It’sfinetoupyourindulgencequotaatChristmasbutuseitwisely.Don’twaste it on a buffet of fried food, grim canapes and cheap prosecco just because it’s there. Determine in advance which events in your diary will have delicious qualityfoodonofferandmakethoseyournightstoindulge(guilt-free).

Top tip: Never arrive hungry at a party. Eat a healthy meal before yougo,orifit’saneventwhereyouplantotakeadvantageofthe yummy food, then maybe have a snack beforehand so you’re still nottemptedtooverindulge.

Ifthere’sasteadyflowoffestivetreatsintheoffice,giveyourselfa better chance of resisting by keeping healthy snacks in your drawer or handbag. Would a nut, raisin and chocolate chip mix hit the spot while everyone else tucks into mince pies? If there’s something you really can’t resist, then mark it down as a guiltfreeindulgence.

If someone gifts you food, don’t do that thing where you convince yourself the only way to get it out of the house is to eat it. There’s nothing wrong with regifting to someone else or sharingitwithcolleaguesorneighbours.

Get plenty of sleep! You won’t enjoy anything if you’re constantly drained of energy. Keep a good supply of fruit and vegetables in your diet, and take a Vitamin C supplement for an extra boost. All of this will support your immune system, which means more energy.

Move your body, and I mean every single day. Even if it’s not your usual gym session, being consistent will help keep you on track and stop you from getting too lazy. It might help to book some workouts with a friend or trainer so they can hold you accountable.

Having a variety of go-to options, like spending twenty minutes practising yoga, a short HIIT session, or even just taking a walk, should be easy to squeeze into your day. MANAGING THE ‘PARTY’ SEASON

December throws us more opportunities to drink than any other time of year, but the first thing to remember is that you don’t have to take them. Attitudes have changed. Sobriety and mindful drinking are the new sexy. And if you’re thinking about it, you can bet others are, too. Sober curious? If and when you do drink, choose your drinks wisely. Avoid sugar-laden cocktailsandsticktoclearspiritsifweightlossisyourgoal.

But don’t overindulge for the sakeofit.Eatslowly.Itcantake20minutesfor your gut to tell your brain that you are full once you start eating, so leave an opportunity for that feedback loop to work. Don’t carry on eating once you’ve stopped actually appreciatingit.

Stress less. The important thing is being with the people we love - it really doesn’t matter if the potatoes are burnt or someone smashes a plate.

Don’tletothersstressyouout,either.Youmay be forced to spend time with people who don’t make you feel good about yourself - this is where boundaries come into play again. If you can only cope with a few hours of your overly critical family member, decide your limitsinadvance.Andinthemeantime,ifthey comment on what your teenager is wearing or how you set the table, breathe through it. How to work with your circadian rhythm to optimise your health 24/7

Life has evolved on planet earth under a consistent day/night cycle, which sets corresponding biorhythms in the body to optimally adapt internal processes to the environment. This physiological synchronisation between biological processes and environmental cues is known as entrainment. Through this rhythmic entrainment, our body has been primed to be active during the day and then to switch to a rest and repair modeduringthenight.

Most life on Earth displays biological processes that follow an endogenous (internally-regulated) rhythm of around 24 hours. This rhythm is based on an internal biological clock, but is also entrained by environmental cues, such as light and temperature, that is, reset, synchronised or adjusted by these external cues as occurs when we travel across time zones. Jet lag, for example, denotes the time it takes the body to readjust its circadian rhythm to fall into syncwiththenewenvironmentalcues.

It has been shown that the success of transplants and other medical treatments may be increased through added consideration of the body’s circadianrhythm.Also,withregardstopharmaceuticals,thereisoftenastrong circadian regulation of the target of a particular drug, often a certain protein expression that the pharmaceutical drug seeks to inhibit. Therefore, if the expression does not become active until the evening, but the drug is taken in the morning, it will have no effect or will require an increasingly heavy dose before it has an effect, which also increases the side effects. If, however, the drug can be timed to match the peak expression of the target, then less of the drug will be required to maximise efficacy, while reducing potential side effects associated with the drug.
