Along with performances by the winners of Millikin’s annual Concerto/Aria Competition, the MDSO will present New Guinea Horizons by Millikin alumnus Michael Karasis and Symphonic Dances by Sergei Rachmaninoff. Each dance features a different sound, mood and color from the orchestra, including a rustic folk-like melody, a waltz and a highly energized finale featuring the haunting Dies Irae from the Requiem Mass.

The MDSO’s season finale will open with a perfect blend of modern and neoclassical orchestral images, with American composer Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s Concerto Grosso 1985, followed by pianist Pei-I Wang in her debut solo performance with the MDSO in Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in G Minor. The program will conclude with Sibelius’s Symphony No.2, which received its U.S. premiere in 1904 at a time when composers such as Schoenberg and Stravinsky were advancing modernist styles.
