DRAMATURG’S NOTES The dining-room of the Birlings’ house in Brumley, an industrial city in the North Midlands. An evening in Spring, 1912.

I

n 1912, J.B. Priestley was 18 years old. When the First World War began two years later, he volunteered for the infantry and fought on the front lines of France. He later described the Edwardian era as “the lost golden age… all the more radiant because it is on the other side of the huge black pit of war.” An Inspector Calls opens in that radiant golden age as the Birling family celebrates the engagement of daughter Sheila to Gerald Croft, son and heir of Sir George and Lady Croft. As the men linger over port and cigars, the women withdraw to the drawing room for coffee and talk of wedding clothes. What we learn of Sheila and Mrs. Birling’s lives echoes in Lady Mary’s words from Downton Abbey (whose first season also begins in 1912): “Women like me don’t have a life. We choose clothes, and pay calls, and work for charity, and do the season. But really we are stuck in a waiting room until we marry.” Unlike the world of Downton Abbey, with its army of servants, the parlour maid Edna is the only visible servant of the Birling household, a maid-of-all-work within their affluent middle-class home. Women comprised nearly a third of the workforce, the majority of whom were employed in domestic service and manual labor, such as textile spinning, weaving, and dressmaking. Going into service was considered a cut above working in a factory, and even those skilled jobs were preferable to surviving by prostitution. For a woman without much education, employment options were very narrow in Edwardian England. In contrast to the multi-course dinners of the upper classes, countless working class families only had the resources for one good meal a day, primarily consisting of bread, butter, and tea. Because of this malnourishment, the Edwardian well-to-do “could literally look down” on their social inferiors, who tended to be several inches shorter and many pounds lighter than the well-fed upper classes, according to Paul Thompson’s The Edwardians. 63% of the population died before age of 60. It is this gulf between the classes that Priestley explores in An Inspector Calls. Writing about this “golden age,” which was golden for some but not others, from the far side of a worldwide depression and two world wars, J.B. Priestley invites his mid-twentieth century audience—and every subsequent audience— to look at their own interconnectedness in a new light. Alexandra Harbold and Mary B. Robinson

WHO’S WHO IN THE COMPANY recently named him one of New York’s ten best. He has cast film, TV, commercials, over 70 national tours, and numerous regional theaters across the country. Independently, or in his association with Rich Cole since 1994, he has cast for the Pioneer Theatre Company, The Fulton Theatre, MaltzJupiter Theatre, The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, and many many others. Bob is also a proud faculty member in Pace University’s Theatre program in charge of the Senior BFA musical theatre majors, for the last 10 years. Nights when he is not directing shows, he can be found directing students in one of the two audition classes he teaches weekly, for the last 18 years, through The Actor’s Loft. RICH COLE (Casting) has happily served as PTC’s casting director since 2001. He has helped to populate more than 500 shows for Broadway, off-Broadway, National Tours, London, Dublin, Vienna and over thirty-five of this nation’s major regional theatres. For this work, the Casting Society of America thrice nominated him for the

prestigious Artios Award. Also a director and playwright, he is the founding Artistic Director of New York’s The Urban Rock Project, whose critically acclaimed production of Patriot Acts was one of the highlights of a recent New York International Fringe Festival. His play Unnatural Acts won the 2002 OOBR Award for Excellence. Cole made his Salt Lake City directing debut with The Caucasian Chalk Circle for the U of U’s Department of Theatre. ACTORS’ EQUITY ASSOCIATION (AEA) founded in 1913 represents more than 45,000 actors and stage managers in the United States. Equity seeks to advance, promote and foster the art of live theatre as an essential component of our society. Equity negotiates wages and working conditions, providing a wide range of benefits, including health and pension plans. AEA is a member of the AFL-CIO, and is affiliated with FIA, an international organization of performing arts unions. For more information, visit www. actorsequity.org.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION Emergency Exits are indicated to your right and left in the theatre. Please identify the exit closest to your seat location in case an emergency occurs. The videotaping, photographing or other video or audio recording of this production is strictly prohibited. This includes photos taken by phone. CELLULAR PHONES, CAMERAS AND PAGERS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE THEATRE. Even if set to silent or vibrate, they may disrupt wireless sound equipment. Please either leave your phone in your car or check it at the coat check. “TEXTING” is disturbing to the actors, and your fellow audience members. Please refrain from use. If you might need to be reached during a performance, leave your exact seat location with the box office. The number for emergency calls is 801-581-6963. We have a hearing assistance system that allows our hard-ofhearing patrons to sit in any seat in the house. Collateral required; inquire at the coat check. We welcome disabled persons. Those with special requirements should request assistance in advance. Refreshments are not permitted in the auditorium, but are available in the main floor lobby during intermission and pre-show. Bottled water is allowed.

24

Smoking is not permitted in University buildings. Please ask ushers for smoking locations. Evening performances are at 7:30 p.m. Monday thru Thursday, 8:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday; Saturday matinees at 2:00 p.m. Please avoid arriving after curtain time. To avoid disturbing other patrons, latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the House Manager. This policy has been instituted at the request of many of our patrons. Season ticket holders may exchange their tickets for another performance of the same play by returning tickets to the box office at least 48 hours prior to the performance date. Tickets are non-refundable. You may donate your tickets, helping yourself and Pioneer Theatre Company. If you are unable to attend a production, make a tax-deductible gift of your tickets to the Theatre so that we may re-sell them. Call the box office 48 hours prior to the performance date. The Patron Services staff will serve you from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. During the run of a show, the box office is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. No children under age 5 admitted to performances.

AN INSPECTOR CALLS

The Painful Truth Pain is an unbidden guest, humanity’s shadow companion down through the ages. It is a despoiler of dreams and a thief. Chronic pain can appear suddenly in a person’s life, changing it forever. Dr. Lynn R. Webster puts a face on chronic pain through the lives of his patients, and provides an intimate view of what it is like to live with it. The Painful Truth The Painful Truth ad your eyes to the world will open pre-print of those who are stigmatized page 37 and marginalized by our society and healthcare system. Yet the new book offers hope and a path forward for those willing to engage in a crusade against the human race’s primal enemy—pain. “This book gives voice to real people who suffer with chronic pain and to their caregivers. With the wisdom and compassion of a seasoned practitioner, he tells their stories....We would all do well to heed the call of those forced to live with chronic pain. This excellent book is a very good place to start.” —The Rev. George Anthony Hoeltzel, Episcopal priest, Yonkers, New York
