Holidays Season in The Capital City

in Eborn books—a perfect place to sip and linger. Other favorites are People’s Coffee on 300 S, and for a quick cup of joe to go, Maverik on 200 S and State just introduced a half-dozen international blends that are coffee shop quality in a convenience store. Holiday Eats The options are endless in downtown. For a classic meal with a view, the Roof Restaurant at Temple Square is a holiday tradition for many Utahns. Overlooking the Temple and its elaborate Christmas light installments, the view from a dozen stories high is unforgettable, as are the fried pickles and desserts. Another venerable favorite is the Lion House, and their famous rolls and home-style menu. Warm up near the fire sipping hot chocolate with fresh baked cinnamon rolls, brownies, or cookies in their outdoor garden during the holidays.

Take some time to eat, shop, and sightsee before or after a show at the Eccles Theater and enjoy the holiday spirit in the city has to offer. World’s Best Coffee One of my favorite scenes in Elf is when Buddy finds the “Best Coffee in the World” at a diner in New York. Safe to say that cafe did not win that award, but Three Pines Coffee on Main Street should! This cozy spot has quickly become a downtown favorite for a caffeine fix. Across Main is the Coffee Garden, located

If you are in search of the best and hottest dining options, my recent favorites are HSL, Current, Stanza (who has a new chef) and White Horse - who also have excellent

Lights There are over one million lights that twinkle between Temple Square, Gallivan Center, and City Creek! Add to that ornate holiday trees and fountain shows at The Gateway and City Creek, makes downtown the state’s center for holiday cheer. Downtown’s streets glow with more than 19 miles of neon blue and hot white lights, adding to the urban ambiance.

The Gateway The Gateway really shines in entertainment options. Located next to the newly renovated Vivint Smart Home Arena, home of the Utah Jazz, along with live concert venue, The Depot, this is the event heartbeat of downtown. Holiday favorites for over a decade are the kid-friendly Discovery Gateway Children’s Museum and newly remodeled Clark Planetarium, home to popular 3D holiday-themed IMAX shows.

Window shopping on Main Street (don’t miss the Macy’s Candy Window display) or walking around Temple Square are two must-do experiences in the capital city during the holiday season. If walking is not your thing, hop on the Jingle Bus (see below) for a guided tour of downtown’s best holiday lights. Shop ‘Til You Drop City Creek Center, stretching across Main Street with its signature skybridge, is a destination unto itself. Nature and urban combine for an unforgettable shopping experience at City Creek Center in the heart of Salt Lake, as a creek follows in your footsteps under a retractable glass roof to keep shopper warm under stars and snowflakes. The Broadway district (300 S, from State Street to 300 E) features oneof-a-kind shopping options just a block and a half south of the Eccles Theater. These unique mom & pop style shops run the gamut from vintage clothing (Now & Again 207 E 300 S) to modern art (Kayo 177 E

The Gateway is also a smart place to park. Easily accessed from the interstate, downtown visitors can park in the redesigned underground garages and use TRAX or the free Jingle Bus to navigate around the city. No need to circle blocks looking for parking all evening! Round out the holiday season in style at The Gateway’s New Year’s Eve event, Last Hurrah. The event is free and open to the public and includes a countdown to the New Year with live music, fireworks, as well as indoor and outdoor activities from 8PM–Midnight. Jingle Bus Speaking of free tours, the Jingle Bus, a holiday-themed free hopon, hop-off bus offers rides around downtown through Dec 31. with stops at Temple Square, City Creek, Gallivan Plaza and The Gateway. The Jingle Bus is perfect for getting in the holiday spirit on a tour of downtown’s best light displays and shopping destinations. Advertorial
