melissaweyn.com RICHARD RODGERS and OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II (Music and Lyrics). After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (composer, 1902–1979) and Oscar Hammerstein II (librettist/ lyricist, 1895–1960) joined forces in 1943 to create the most successful partnership in the American musical theater. Prior to his work with Hammerstein, Rodgers collaborated with lyricist Lorenz Hart on a series of musical comedies that epitomized the wit and sophistication of Broadway in its heyday. Among their greatest successes were Pal Joey, On Your Toes, and Babes In Arms. Throughout the same era, Hammerstein brought new life to the operetta, culminating in the masterpiece Show Boat (music by Jerome Kern). Oklahoma!, the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, was also the first of a new genre, the musical play, blending Rodgers’s musical comedy style with Hammerstein’s innovations in operetta. Oklahoma! was followed by Carousel, State Fair (film 1945, 1962; Broadway 1996), Allegro, South Pacific, The King and I, Me and Juliet, Pipe Dream, Cinderella (television 1957, 1965, 1997; Broadway 2013), Flower Drum Song, and The Sound of Music. Collectively, the Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals have earned Tonys, Oscars, Grammys, Emmys, Pulitzers, and Olivier Awards. HOWARD LINDSAY and RUSSEL CROUSE (Book). The Lindsay and Crouse partnership stands today as the longest collaboration of any writers in theatrical history, lasting for 32 years. Howard Lindsay was born in 1889 and died in 1968. He became an actor at 19 and went on to become a successful Broadway playwright and director. Russel Crouse was born in 1893 and died in 1966. After serving in the Navy, he worked on New York newspapers, gaining his first renown through a signed column in the Post. In 1932 he became head of the publicity department for the Theatre Guild and in 1933 wrote his first Broadway show, collaborating with Corey Ford on the musical comedy Hold Your Horses. From 1934 on Crouse wrote only with Lindsay. Their hits include The Sound of Music (with a score by Rodgers & Hammerstein); Anything Goes and Red, Hot, and Blue (with scores by Cole Porter); Call Me Madam (score by Irving Berlin); the longrunning play Life With Father (which originally starred Lindsay); the Pulitzer Prize winning State of the Union; and The Great Sebastians, written for the Lunts. Their producing credits included The Hasty Heart, Detective Story, and Arsenic and Old Lace.

A City of Cultural Opportunities: Downtown Salt Lake City by Nick Como, Downtown Alliance

Clark Planetarium

S

alt Lake City has cultural opportunities on every block in the grid. Looking for something educational for the kids? Look no further than Discovery Gateway or Clark Planetarium. Aiming to mix in some science and tech with art? The Leonardo has you covered. Need a dash of the abstract before heading out on the town? Utah Museum of Contemporary Art never disappoints with it’s rotating galleries - and it’s free, as are public art installations ranging from murals to street art.

Throughout this transformative period, along with the Larry H Miller Megaplex movie theaters, Discovery Gateway and Clark Planetarium have remained constant anchors. Families can easily spend a full day at the children’s museum, occupied with hands-on learning opportunities. Across the street, Clark offers space exploration all ages will enjoy. The 3-D and dome shows are not to be missed, including astronomy themes as well as popular music shows.

Discovery Gateway and Clark Planetarium

Science and technology combine with thoughtful and artful experimentation at the Leonardo, located just off 400 S adjacent to the iconic Library building. Spanning several floors, The Leo offers a sense of exploration and wonderment around each turn. Currently the PERCEPTION: THE ILLUSION OF REALITY exhibit is running, which

The Gateway has undergone a multimillion dollar facelift over the past year or two. Revamped parking, an expansive public art project using local artists to paint large murals, and hosting events and festivals several times a month has re-energized downtown’s west side.

FUN

SLC Pepper by Edgar Zunigar Jr./CC-by-2.0

SLC PEPPER

Utah Museum Of Contemporary Art

UMOCA is unequivocally and absolutely Salt Lake City’s hidden artistic gem. If you enjoy art that ‘takes a chance,’ you will enjoy UMOCA. This free venue is sandwiched between the Salt Palace Convention Center and Abravanel Hall. A perfect cultural evening in the city, say before an opera, should begin at UMOCA. Home to several small galleries and one large main gallery, openings and showings frequently rotate: no two visits will be the same.

Murals and Public Art

Flying Objects, recently completed its final phase last year, where objects ranging from alien “missionaries” in a UFO and an astronaut literally suspend over the sidewalk. Take a walk around the block after tonight’s show and look up - you just might seem something great. Until then, enjoy Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music!

By Utah Museum of Contemporary Art http://www.utahmoca.org, CC BY-SA 3.0

Look up! You might see something cool. SLC has two “famous” murals

you may have seen - SLC Pepper and Ave Maria, but there are several dozen others spread throughout the city. One of my favorites is a rotating piece on the facade of Gallenson’s Guns & Ammo shop on 200 S. The city’s newest addition was completed this summer by Vexta, an internationally renowned artists, on the side of Impact Hub on State Street, reinforcing a burgeoning street art scene.
