A Slice of Paris in the Beehive
Eva’s Boulangerie by Nick Como, Downtown Alliance
A
n American in Paris will certainly feel right at home in the City of Light, with it’s friendly vibe, history and plethora of dining options. However, language would be one difference, then of course there’s the metric system. And who could forget the famous exchange in Pulp Fiction: “Do you know what they call a Quarter Pounder in France? A Royale with cheese”. It’s the perfect blend of familiar and foreign. If you’re looking to get into a Parisian state of mind right here in the Beehive, here’s a half dozen options, just a short walk or Uber from the theater.
Eva’s Boulangerie Eva’s bakery aka Boulangerie, which translates to “a bakery that specializes in baking and selling bread,” lives up to it’s name. Walking through the front doors is a pleasure to the olfactory senses: fresh baked bread, sweets and brewed coffee aromas fill the space. If you want a quick pastry or cup of espresso, the front counter provides fast to-go service. There are also a fresh assortments of pastries, sweets and flatbreads available for the lunch crowd, along with an assortment of baguettes and large loaves of bread. If you prefer to linger, the rear of the space offers a menu ranging from stuffed french bread and quiches for breakfast, to sandwiches, a French Onion soup and decadent offerings, like three cheese macaroni, for chilly afternoons. Gourmandise A true bakery, with a wide assortment of custom cakes and pastries, Gourmandise is also so much more: a restaurant, coffee break or a cozy spot to enjoy a glass of wine. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner you can get your European fix all day long.

BTG Les Madeleines Les Madeleines is famous for their Kouing Aman. One bite of this buttery and rich pastry, originating from Brittany, France and you’ll be hooked! If you can manage not to fill up on multiple Kouing Aman’s, Les Madeleines also offers macaroons, croissants, coffee, as well as both breakfast and lunch. Egg and cheese sandwiches, english muffins and crepes along with an assortment of house made jams provide several options to get a day started off right. Salt Lake’s best (in this writer’s opinion) Cuban sandwich, dubbed “The Miami” is not to be missed. French inspired options include The Paris – a ham and gruyere sandwich – and pommes frites, along with several other sandwiches to round out the menu. BTG Take a tour of France (or Italy, or California, or...you get the idea) “by the glass.” Salt Lake’s go to wine bar, BTG, has several dozen flight options based on region and/or grape. With wine stored “on tap” you can sip short (two ounce) pours of rare and expensive wines without breaking the bank. Most wines are also offered as five ounce glasses and by the bottle. Adorning the wall is a quote from Napoleon Bonaparte’s particularly
fitting for the space: “In victory you deserve champagne. In defeat, you need it.” Olive Bistro One of downtown’s most delightful patios in warm weather, with views of Capitol Theater, is also home to a very traditional menu of French favorites. Fresh crepes, baked paninis and dinner entrees pair with a French chardonnay, or perhaps another vintage from their extensive wine list. In true Parisian style, feel free to pop in for just a dessert, latte or espresso after taking in a show. Monsieur Crepes Food truck are all the rage these days, and wouldn’t you know it, there is one serving up the classic French favorite – the crepe. Easy to eat on the go, you’ll find savory and sweet options from Monsieur Crepes. Find them at The Gateway or Food Truck Thursdays at Gallivan Center.
