Where to find Kinky Boots (and more) Downtown By Nick Como, Downtown Alliance
Salt Lake City is as far from Northampton as it is Milan. But downtown Salt Lake City’s diverse culture has a few nooks and crannies fitting for tonight’s show. BOOTS AND STILETTOS If Lola were in SLC and not Northhampton, where might she find some sturdy new stilettos? Steve Madden at City Creek Center (Main St) is the ultimate source for boots at Salt Lake’s newest retail center. While the boots on the shelf might not be described as “kinky,” there are more than enough “boots to make a Utah girls heart sing,” said City Creek Center general manager Linda Wardell. “Steve Madden’s comfy boots are on trend and can be worn all day and well into the night.” Another go-to spot is Nordstrom, known to always be at the height of fashion, where you’ll find everything from Gucci to UGG. Aldo also has a great collection of boots, including some thigh-high stilettos, which some might venture to call kinky. Aldo has locations at both City Creek Center and The Gateway (200 S and 400 W), which is in the midst of an immense transformation into an entertainment hotspot, still has several retail options for shoppers. Lola would probably be no stranger to Victoria’s Secret (The Gateway)
or Uptown Cheapskate (353 W 200 S) -known for buying & selling secondhand designer apparel & accessories for young adults. Become a fashionista on a budget! MEN’S SHOES A girl’s gotta have shoes, right? Well, so do the gents. The Oxford Shop (65 West 100 South) has men covered for everything from wingtips to, you guessed it, oxfords. This throwback show shop could easily be in Northhampton - it has an old school vibe, and is locally family owned. A TASTE OF MILAN SLC has no shortage of Italian restaurants, many of whom offer several Milanese specialties. Milan, which is the capital of Lombardy, is best known is risotto alla milanese, a creamy dish with saffron flavors. The decadent dish Ossobuco alla milanese, which are veal shanks braised with vegetables, white wine and broth is perfect for a Utah winter nights. Another milanese staple is cassoeula, a single pot dish consisting of cabbage and pork. Our local favorites are Valter’s Osteria, Caffe Molise and Cucina Toscana. Photo Credit: ©David Newkirk

For another taste of Milan, of the liquid sort, head to BTG (By The Glass) wine bar (63 W 100 S). With literally hundreds of selections you can take your taste buds on a tour of Italy with a flight of red or white….or both! BEER & COCKTAILS Kinky Boots kicks off in England, one of the world’s best beer destinations, and so should your night. The English are noted for inventing the IPA (India Pale Ale). In order to ship beer halfway around the globe to colonies in India, more hops were added sot he brews would not spoil on the journey. And thus, the IPA was invented. Traditional and modern English-style beers fill the menu at Beerhive (128 Main St) and Beer Bar (161 E 200 S), which has a Euro style seating and ordering arrangement, typical of the many beer halls in the UK. And as the show ends on the catwalks of Milan, a classic cocktail is ideal for the night cap. We’re fans of the Negroni, ourselves. The Vault at Bambara (202 Main) makes a mixes a great version of this refreshing cocktail, as does Copper Common (111 Broadway) and Bar X (155 E 200 S).
GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN Dance, dance, dance the night away. ELEVATE (149 W 200 S) is a multilevel nightclub & bar offering varied entertainment (concerts, DJs & more) in four unique areas. Sky Bar (149 Pierpont Ave) is a cavernous venue with a retractable roof features DJ dance parties with hightech lighting & sound. Perhaps you’ve got the pipes to match Cyndi Lauper? Karaoke, sing alongs and dueling pianos goes down nightly at Tavernacle Social Club (201 300 S) and Keys on Main (242 Main St).
