Then his own Bob Crewe Generation exploded with “Music to Watch Girls By”. In 1972 Bob was in L.A., where he revived Frankie Valli with “My Eyes Adored You” by Crewe and Kenny Nolan. Este Pizza

How Jersey Boys Eat in SLC: Advice From a New Yorker By Nick Como, Downtown Alliance

Looking for a little slice of Jersey in SLC? You won’t have to look too far from the Eccles Theater for some authentic East Coast. Bagels & Greens New Jersey transplant Robb Abrams began as a Downtown Farmers Market vendor about five years ago as a “project,” to see if New York bagels could be recreated here in Salt Lake. Two brick and mortar locations, Bagel Project (900 E. & 500 S.) and Bagels & Greens (200 S. & Main St.), prove Abrams’ hypothesis. The proof is in the pudding – err toaster. A true bagel: boiled, baked and fresh, tastes best with its insides untouched by a toaster. Doughy and dense, these bagels are the best west of the George Washington Bridge. The downtown location serves one of the area’s best breakfast sandwiches; a bagel with bacon, egg, and cheese

– an East Coast standby. For lunch, several salads and bagel sandwiches are fresh and affordable. My favorite is the classic Lox & Loaded; featuring gravlax, capers, red onion, cream cheese and lemon. Yum. Este Pizza A few New York pizza rules to know: pineapple doesn’t belong on pizza. Neither does BBQ sauce, ranch, or whatever else people try to “improve” the classics with. It’s. Just. Not. Pizza. The original Este Pizza location, in fact, charged $50 for a can of pineapple, and another $50 corkage fee. They found a way to this Queens-kid’s heart immediately, and having a downtown location (156 E. 200 S.), makes me a regular customer. Perfect for lunch, or a second lunch/snack! A fork and knife are not necessary for these thin-crust, large slices – and is in fact bad form. Order a couple Advertorial

Caputo’s

slices of plain or pepperoni from the counter, load it up with red pepper and parmesan, and take a bite fresh out of the Tri-State area. Several specialty pies are also available for those non-traditionalists out there. Thankfully pineapple remains absent from the menu. Gandolfo’s You can tell where you are back East based on what they call a sandwich; sub, grinder, or in my part of New York – a hero. Gandolfo’s (158 S. & Main St.) is a perfect replication of a New York deli, with all the proper encouchertments and stellar hero’s. For example, their Polo Grounds breakfast sandwich (named for the old ballpark the NY Giants played in before they moved to San Francisco half a century ago) is offered “New York Style” – with ketchup. Give it a try! Lunch items follow a similar naming method – East Village, Broadway, Taxi Driver and, of course, Knuckle Sandwich with salads dubbed Madison Square Garden and Little Italy. Very clever.

Caputo’s In my first few months of living in Utah, I stumbled upon Tony Caputo’s Deli (314 W. & 300 S.). Hands down, Tony’s sandwiches and cheese selections single-handedly convinced me I could make it in Utah. Each and every sandwich is a hit – cured meats piled high on crusty bread. Just like back home. To my knowledge, Caputo’s is the only place in Utah to offer Locatelli cheese, grated for sprinkling on pasta. It’s miles and miles above the store-bought mass-produced stuff, and available in every deli from Long Island to the Delaware Water Gap. I used to have my mom ship me some in a care package every month or two from her neighborhood deli. Now it’s Caputo’s to the rescue!

Enjoy the show! And next time you order a bagel, pizza, or sandwich, think WWFVD: What Would Frankie Valli Do? No toasting, no pineapple and call it a hero. Also, pass the Locatelli. Advertorial
