FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Welcome to Innovations 2014! Our annual Innovations series was the first program I created for Ballet West when I became Artistic Director just over seven years ago in March of 2007. To me, it remains one of our most fascinating, thought provoking, and enjoyable performances. The concept behind it is simple: provide a platform for new and untried ballet and give Ballet West artists and emerging local, national, and international choreographers an opportunity to experiment and create. It has been so gratifying to watch as every year a different group of dancer/ choreographers produce unique works that test the boundaries of what ballet choreography can be. It is great to experience how returning choreographers develop and produce ever more sophisticated pieces and to see how new choreographers shape and mold their works upon the remarkable gifts of our artists. This year, I am proud to introduce to the Ballet West stage Mr. Matthew Neenan. Neenan was a dancer with The Pennsylvania Ballet and went on to become their resident choreographer. He is the co-founder of Philadelphia-based BalletX. He has received numerous awards for his work and has choreographed ballets for companies around the country. Matthew Neenan is a wonderfully musical and inventive choreographer; for his world premiere, he has chosen a fascinating piece of music by Argentine composer Alberto Ginastera. I am excited to see what he does with this score and with our BW dancers. Returning as a choreographer this year is Ballet West Principal Artist Christopher Ruud. Ruud created a small work, One, for our first 2007 Innovations program. Then in 2011, I invited him to create a larger scale work. The result was the highly successful Trapped, which we repeated last year. So successful was Trapped that I nominated Ruud for the 2012 New York Choreographers Fellowship, which he won. Now, he returns with a beautiful new piece, Great Souls. Set to the music of Beethoven, juxtaposing two groups of dancers, the first dances with a classical approach, and the other, in a more contemporary style to create an overall seamless whole. Two more BW Company Artists return as well this year, Emily Adams and Christopher Anderson. Both have created twice for the Innovations stage and each time they have presented intriguing explorations into movement, ballet, and musicality. Each of their previous works has been extremely different from the one before, as they delve into myriad possibilities. This year, once again they are approaching their works with completely different outlooks. Finally, I am excited that BW Artist Tyler Gum will be creating his first ballet on Ballet West. He too is developing his own unique style and choreographic identity. This is what is so thrilling to me about our Innovations series. Being able to experience how artists individually interpret music and play with the dance vocabulary to create a new and innovative language. Thank you all for your patronage. We are grateful!

Adam Sklute Artistic Director
Adam Sklute has brought Ballet West national and international recognition as Artistic Director. Since he began with Ballet West in March 2007, the company has appeared twice at Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (Ballet Across America Festival in 2008 with Balanchine’s Serenade and a seven-show run in 2012 of Willam Christensen’s The Nutcracker with six sold-out performances); twice at New York City Center’s Fall for Dance (in 2009 with Nijinska’s Les Biches and in 2012 with the Grand Pas from Paquita); three times in Chicago (at the Chicago Dancing Festival in 2010 with Serenade, in 2011 with Jiří Kylián’s Sinfonietta, and in 2013 with The Sleeping Beauty and a Repertory Program at the famed Auditorium Theatre); and twice in Las Vegas in collaborative programs with Nevada Ballet Theatre. Ballet West has also graced the cover of Dance Magazine twice – in 2009 and 2013 – and has garnered rave reviews from The New York Times for The Treasures of the Ballets Russes and The Nutcracker. In addition, the Company was recently the subject of the docu-drama “Breaking Pointe” for two seasons. Sklute has introduced Ballet West to such renowned contemporary choreographers as Jiří Kylián, Mark Morris, and Twyla Tharp, among others, while expanding the company’s Balanchine repertoire and adding early 20th century Diaghilev-era masterpieces. In addition to reintroducing lost elements of Christensen’s production of The Nutcracker, Sklute has conceived and produced new versions of Swan Lake and The Sleeping Beauty and developed Ballet West’s wildly successful new works program, Innovations. Sklute danced with the Joffrey Ballet starting in 1985 and rose to the ranks of Associate Director from 2005 to 2007. He is an Adjunct Professor of Ballet at The University of Utah and a teacher, lecturer, coach and judge of ballet worldwide.

LEADERSHIP Scott Altman Executive Director
Scott Altman joins Ballet West as the company’s newly appointed Executive Director. He brings with him nearly three decades of experience in the performing arts and non-profit arts administration. Altman is the former General Director of the Phoenix-based Arizona Opera where, under his leadership, the company experienced unprecedented patron growth and expanded audience development. He also oversaw the design and construction of a new Opera Center in central Phoenix and successfully consolidated operations into one city. Altman’s professional activities, association and community activities include, among many others, serving as Regional and District Adjudicator for the Metropolitan Opera National Council, The University of Arizona Presidents Competition, and the Dallas Opera Competition. Altman is also the Recipient of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts Citation of Excellence for 2007, 2008, and 2009. Prior to his roles in administration, Scott had a 20-year career as a professional singer and performed 37 distinct opera roles throughout the country. Along his path to administration, Scott was also an instructor of opera at Princeton University. He continues to instruct master classes and adjudicate prominent vocal competitions nationwide. Altman went on to complete his Master of Music degree at Manhattan School of Music in New York, after receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the State University College at Purchase in Purchase, New York.

CHOREOGRAPHERS Matthew Neenan
Choreographer, The Sixth Beauty Matthew Neenan began his dance training at the Boston Ballet School and with noted teachers Nan C. Keating and Jacqueline Cronsberg. He later attended the LaGuardia High School of Performing Arts and the School of American Ballet in New York. From 1994-2007, Matthew danced with the Pennsylvania Ballet where he danced numerous principal roles in works by George Balanchine, John Cranko, Paul Taylor, Peter Martins, Val Caniparoli, Jorma Elo, Lila York, Meredith Rainey, Christopher Wheeldon, and Jerome Robbins. In October 2007, Matthew was named Choreographer in Residence at the Pennsylvania Ballet. Matthew’s choreography has been featured and performed by the Pennsylvania Ballet, BalletX, The Washington Ballet, Colorado Ballet, Ballet Memphis, Milwaukee Ballet, Oregon Ballet Theatre, Tulsa Ballet, Juilliard Dance, New York City Ballet’s Choreographic Institute, Sacramento Ballet, Nevada Ballet Theatre, Indiana University, Opera Philadelphia, and LaGuardia High School of Performing Arts (NYC), among others. He has received numerous awards and grants for his choreography from the National Endowment of the Arts, Dance Advance funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts, the Choo San Goh Foundation, and the Independence Foundation. In 2006, Matthew received the New York City Ballet’s Choreographic Institute’s Fellowship Initiative Award. Matthew’s Carmina Burana, As It’s Going, and 11:11 was performed by the Pennsylvania Ballet at New York City Center in 2006 & 2007. In 2008, he received a fellowship from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. This marks his fourth time receiving the PCA fellowship. In October 2009, Matthew was the grand-prize winner of Sacramento Ballet’s Capital Choreography Competition and was the first recipient of the Jerome Robbins NEW Program Fellowship for his work At the border for Pennsylvania Ballet. In 2005, Matthew co-founded BalletX with fellow dancer Christine Cox. BalletX had its world premiere at the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival in September 2005 and is now the resident dance company at the prestigious Wilma Theatre. BalletX has toured and performed Neenan’s choreography in New York City at The Joyce Theater, The Skirball Center, Symphony Space, Central Park Summerstage, Vail International Dance Festival, Jacob’s Pillow, The Cerritos Center, Laguna Dance Festival, Spring to Dance Festival in St. Louis, and internationally in Cali, Colombia and Seoul, Korea. In 2010, Matthew became a trustee member for DanceUSA. His ballet The Last Glass was praised in the New York Times as the “10 Best” of 2013.

CHOREOGRAPHERS Tyler Gum
Ballet West Artist/ Choreographer, Inverted Affect
Tyler Gum is from Calhan, Colorado. He studied with Patricia Hoffman and Holly Marble at the Ballet Society of Colorado Springs, and with Fernando Schaffenburg at the Sangre de Cristo Ballet Theatre. He attended summer programs at Walnut Hill, Harid Conservatory and the Pacific Northwest Ballet School on scholarship. Tyler attended the University of Arizona where he performed with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra and was featured in Jory Hancock’s Tonadas Pas de Deux. He competed in the Youth America Grand Prix where he received first place with his classical ballet solo at regional competition and a contract with Ballet West II after the New York City finals. Tyler is in his 5th season with Ballet West, being promoted from Ballet West II into the main company in 2010. With Ballet West, Tyler has performed featured roles in Edward Stierle’s Lacrymosa, Willam Christensen’s The Nutcracker, Bluebird in The Sleeping Beauty, the Jester in Sir Frederick Ashton’s Cinderella, George Balanchine’s Divertimento No. 15 and Who Cares?, Val Caniparoli’s The Lottery, Jiří Kylián’s Forgotten Land and Petite Mort. Tyler has also performed in world premieres such as Emily Adams’ Regarding Us, Avichai Scher’s White Noise and recently in Nicolo Fonte’s The Rite of Spring. Inverted Affect is Tyler’s choreographic debut in Ballet West’s new works series, Innovations 2014. The music, “Nobody’s Listening,” is composed by the choreographer, with the help of Travis Lake, Clay Humphrey, and Babe Humphrey. The music is inspired by poetry written by his grandfather, Jim Gum. Tyler’s other interests include the visual arts. At the Works of Art “Holiday Party Arty” in Colorado Springs, Colorado, he won a Juror’s Award and sold one of his paintings, titled “Setting Sun.” Also a published illustrator, he created visuals for D.J. Seddon’s children’s book about Colorado, titled “The Butterfly Fly and I.”
Christopher Anderson
Ballet West Soloist/ Choreographer, Paths
A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Christopher Anderson began his studies at the Baltimore School for the Arts and continued at the Purchase College Conservatory of Dance. Christopher joined Ballet West, from Boston Ballet, in 2001 and is currently a Soloist with the company. This is Christopher’s third work for the Innovations program. His first work Intonation featured the photography of Erik Ostling and was set to the music of Michael Nyman. The second work, Behind Closed Doors, featured Utah’s own violinist Aubrey Woods. Paths, his third work for Innovations, will incorporate members of the audience. Christopher is extremely thankful, not only for the opportunities at Ballet West to dance in new works, but also for the choreographers who have created the work. New work is an invaluable experience for any dancer, but also invaluable for aspiring choreographers. It has made for an unparalleled learning experience and has, without a doubt, helped shape his choreographic voice. Christopher’s goal with all of his works is to create an environment that encourages a unique performance each night. Unique for the audience, and unique for the artists.

Ballet West Soloist/ Choreographer, Mixed Signals
Born in Newtown, Pennsylvania, Emily Adams trained at the School of American Ballet, Studio Maestro, Ballet Technique, and Princeton Ballet. She also studied with Christina Fagundes, Lincoln Jones, and Nancy Bielski. She attended summer programs at the School of American Ballet, San Francisco Ballet School, exploring Ballet with Suzanne Farrell, and the Royal Ballet School. As an advanced student at SAB, she performed in several ballets with New York City Ballet. She choreographed ballets for two SAB student choreography workshops and was invited by Peter Martins, Artistic Director of New York City Ballet, to choreograph for the New York Choreographic Institute’s Spring Session in 2004. In 2005, Emily joined Ballet West’s pre-professional company – Ballet West II, followed by becoming an Artist with Ballet West in 2007. She was promoted to Demi-Soloist in 2011 and to Soloist in 2013. Her performance highlights include featured roles in George Balanchine’s Jewels, The Four Temperaments, and Divertimento No. 15; Carabosse and Lilac Fairy in Adam Sklute’s The Sleeping Beauty; Fairy Godmother and Summer Fairy in Sir Frederick Ashton’s Cinderella; Sugar Plum Fairy in Willam Christensen’s The Nutcracker; roles in Jiří Kylían’s Petite Mort, Sinfonetta, and Forgotten Land; Mrs. Summers in Val Caniparoli’s The Lottery; and the recent world premiere of Nicolo Fonte’s The Rite of Spring. Emily created Regarding Us for Innovations 2011 and Forces at Play for Innovations 2012.
Christopher Rudd
Ballet West Principal Artist/ Choreographer, Great Souls
A native of San Francisco, Christopher began his training at the San Francisco Ballet School, where he studied for six years and performed numerous children’s roles in the SF Ballet repertoire. He received additional training at the Pacific Northwest Ballet School, before training at the University of Utah Ballet Department. Christopher joined Ballet West in 1998, was promoted to Soloist in 2001 and Principal in 2004. With Ballet West, Christopher has toured throughout the United States and abroad including multi-city tours in China and in Scotland at the Edinburgh International Festival. Some notable roles include “Petruchio” in John Cranko’s The Taming of the Shrew; the Second Pas de Deux in Antony Tudor’s The Leaves Are Fading; Christopher Bruce’s Ghost Dances; William Forsythe’s In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated; Jiří Kylián’s Petite Mort; Val Caniparoli’s The Lottery and Book of Alleged Dances; The Prince and Stepsister in Sir Fredrick Ashton’s Cinderella and “Romeo” in Jonas Kage’s Romeo and Juliet. Christopher has performed the principal roles in multiple versions of such classics as Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, Cinderella, Don Quixote and Le Corsaire Pas de Deux. He has also danced leading roles in works by Jerome Robbins, Twyla Tharp, Jiří Kylián, Antony Tudor, Hans van Manen and Nicolo Fonte. Christopher’s favorite George Balanchine credits include Serenade; “Melancholic” and “Sanguinic” in The Four Temperaments; Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux; “El Capitan” in Stars and Stripes; and the principal in Theme and Variations and Rubies. Recently he has had works created on him by Nicolo Fonte in The Immeasurable Cadences Within and The Rite of Spring, Helen Picket in But Never Doubt I Love and Val Caniparoli in The Lottery.

Son of respected dancer and choreographer Tomm Ruud, Christopher is responsible for his father’s works. He has set and performed his father’s ballets, such as MOBILE, for companies including Stuttgart Ballet, Ballet West and Joffrey Ballet Co. He can be seen as a guest artist in frequent performances throughout the United States. After 16 years as a dancer with Ballet West, Christopher has added Choreographer to his list of accomplishments. His works Without Fall and Trapped were performed at Ballet West’s 2012 Gala, and the 2011 & 2013 Innovations programs respectively. In 2012, he was awarded a Fellowship Initiative grant from the New York Choreographic Institute, enabling him to create Strum. His latest piece, Great Souls, was created for Ballet West’s 50th anniversary season and is made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
ARTISTIC STAFF Pamela Robinson-Harris
Principal Ballet Mistress Pamela Robinson-Harris has served as Ballet Mistress for Ballet West for over 15 years as well as the Company’s Interim Artistic Director from 20062007. Her career began with the Cleveland Ballet, followed by the State of Alabama Ballet in 1982 and Ballet Mississippi in 1984. Pamela joined Ballet West in 1985, advancing to Principal in 1988. During her career, Pamela performed in some of the most prestigious theatres in America, performing principal roles in most major classical works, including those of George Balanchine, Val Caniparoli, Sir Frederick Ashton, and Ben Stevenson. Pamela, together with Nevada Ballet Theater Ballet Mistress Peggy Dolkas, co-choreographed two ballets for Ballet West’s Family Series – The Little Mermaid and Aladdin. She also reworked major sections of Ballet West’s productions of The Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake, and has choreographed for Ballet West II and the Ballet West Pre-Professional Trainee Division.
Bruce Caldwell
Ballet Master/Company Archivist Bruce Caldwell began his ballet career in 1961 in the children’s roles of Willam Christensen’s The Nutcracker. He joined Ballet West as an Apprentice in 1968 and rose through the ranks to become a Principal in 1972, a position he held for 18 years before joining the artistic staff in 1990. In 1989 he received the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce Excellence in the Arts Award, and a year later, the Governor’s Award, presented by the Utah Arts Council. Caldwell was appointed to his present position of Ballet Master in 1997 and assumed the additional role of Company Archivist in 2007.

ARTISTIC STAFF Jane Wood-Smith
Ballet Mistress Born in Washington, D.C., Jane received her training at the Washington School of Ballet. At 15, she was invited to perform with the Grand Theatre de Genève in Switzerland under Patricia Neary and George Balanchine. Jane joined Ballet West in 1979, rising to the rank of Principal Dancer and performing the title roles in Romeo and Juliet, Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, Swan Lake, Cinderella, Coppelia, and Lady of the Camellias, as well as a full range of contemporary ballets created by world-renowned choreographers. In 2001, Jane retired from Ballet West. She graduated from The University of Utah with a Bachelor’s degree in Ballet, became Faculty Coordinator for the Ballet West Conservatory, and was an Adjunct Assistant Professor at The University of Utah. Jane joined Florida State University’s Department of Dance in 2002 as Visiting Assistant Professor before returning to Utah in 2004. She continued teaching at The University of Utah and was a guest teacher for Ballet West and the Academy. Jane was the Children’s Ballet Mistress for Ballet West’s The Nutcracker for two years. Jane joined Ballet West’s artistic staff in 2011. She continues to conduct auditions for the Ballet West Summer Intensive across the country.
Heather Thackeray
Assistant to the Artistic Director Prior to her appointment as Assistant to the Artistic Director, Adam Sklute, Heather enjoyed a 20-year career as a dancer with Ballet West. A Utah native, Heather began taking ballet and tap lessons from her mother at age 3. She continued her studies at the Ballet West Conservatory and joined Ballet West in 1991. Her performance highlights include Ceres in Michael Smuin’s The Tempest, Songbird Fairy in The Sleeping Beauty, Spring Fairy in Ben Stevenson’s Cinderella, Suzuki in Stanton Welch’s Madame Butterfly, and the Doll and Lead Mirliton in Willam Christensen’s The Nutcracker. Heather holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from The University of Utah. She is a well respected teacher, assisting in company rehearsals and overseeing the children’s roles in Ballet West productions.
Christopher Sellars
Ballet West First Soloist/Interim Director of Ballet West II Christopher received eight years of training under his parents at Orange County Dance Center in Huntington Beach, California, followed by The Rock School for Dance Education in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Christopher became a founding member of Ballet West’s second company, Ballet West II, in 2005. The following year, he joined the main company as a corps de ballet member before being promoted to Demi-Soloist in 2008, followed by Soloist in 2010. He was recently promoted to First Soloist for Ballet West’s 2013-14 season in addition to being named Interim Director for Ballet West II.

PRODUCTION STAFF Michael Andrew Currey
Director of Production and Artistic Operations Mr. Currey was recently appointed Director of Artistic Operations, while continuing his duties as the Director of Production, a position he has held here at Ballet West for 4 seasons. Michael has played a major role in the planning and oversight of the construction of the new Jesse Eccles Quinney Ballet Centre building adjacent to the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre, which opens in November 2014. Prior to joining Ballet West, Mr. Currey served in production and management leadership roles at The Joffrey Ballet, New York City Opera, Chicago Children’s Theatre, Maine State Music Theatre, San Diego Opera, Pittsburgh Opera, Moonlight Amphitheatre, Bucks County Playhouse, San Diego Civic Light Opera, and others. Michael can also be seen in Robert Altman’s film “The Company”, in which he plays the stage manager.
David Heuvel
Costume Production Director David Heuvel has been associated with Ballet West since 1979. Apart from his work for Ballet West, he has designed and built costumes nationally and internationally, including Ballet Du Nord (France), Singapore Ballet, Washington Ballet, Carolina Ballet, North Carolina School of the Arts, Atlanta Ballet and Richmond Ballet.
Michael McCulloch
Production Stage Manager Michael McCulloch graduated from The University of Utah with a degree in Theatre Production and Design. He has worked for numerous Utah dance and theatre companies including Utah Opera, Promised Valley Playhouse, and Odyssey Dance Theatre. In his 29 years with Ballet West, he has been Assistant Stage Manager, Assistant Electrician, Master Electrician, and in 2000 became Production Stage Manager. Michael has been a member of Actors Equity Association for 29 years and a member of I.A.T.S.E. Local 99 (Stagehands) for over 25 years.
