About Ballet West From Balanchine to Bournonville, and Petipa to Tharp, Ballet West boasts a rich and varied repertoire, elegant and versatile artists, and an American style and legacy that is as dynamic, expansive, and unexpected as the Rocky Mountain region it represents. Ballet West has toured the world several times over, presenting the very best in American classical ballet.
willam christensen, founder of ballet west
Ballet West was established in Salt Lake City in 1963. Willam F. Christensen was the company’s first artistic director, co-founding the company together with Utah’s “First Lady of the Arts,” Glenn Walker Wallace. In 1951, Christensen had established the first ballet department in an American university at The University of Utah, and with the tireless assistance of Mrs. Enid Cosgriff, this program grew into the Utah Civic Ballet, Ballet West’s first incarnation. But this was not the first ballet company Willam Christensen founded. Along with his brothers, Lew and Harold, Christensen made history by establishing the oldest ballet company in the western United States, the San Francisco Ballet. There, he went on to create the first full-length American productions of Coppélia, Swan Lake, and his evergreen production of The Nutcracker, which remains in Ballet West’s repertoire to this day. With 37 company members, 16 second company members, and a thriving academy that trains dancers of all ages, many of whom have gone on to professional careers with Ballet West and companies around the world, Ballet West ranks among the top professional ballet companies in America. Since its inception, the Company has had five artistic directors—its founder Willam Christensen, Bruce Marks, John Hart, Jonas Kage, and currently Adam Sklute, each of whom has helped to build Ballet West’s unique and expansive profile.
GLENN WALKER WALLACE, CO-FOUNDER OF BALLET WEST
For more than 50 years, Willam Christensen and Ballet West have developed and influenced innumerable great artists in the ballet world. Some notable figures include Bart Cook, Finis Jhung, Jay Jolley, Victoria Morgan, Tomm Ruud, Michael Smuin, Richard Tanner, and Kent Stowell. With an eclectic and ever expanding outlook, Ballet West is truly an American pioneer in the world of dance.

ROMEO + JULIET 21-22 SEASON

From the Artistic Director Welcome to Michael Smuin's Romeo and Juliet. In 1935, Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev completed his score for the ballet Romeo and Juliet. It was originally composed for The Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow but indefinitely postponed because of the controversy over the newly formed Soviet Committee on Arts Affairs’ mandate that the ballet have a happy ending. Meanwhile, the orchestral music was already being well received and recorded around the world. By the time the official ballet production premiered in Brno, Czechoslovakia in late 1938, with Shakespeare’s intended tragic ending, the ballet’s success could not be denied. Finally, In 1940, The Bolshoi produced Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet as originally intended with choreography by Leonid Lavrovsky. Since then, many great ballet productions of William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet have been produced, including the renowned version by John Cranko-created for the Stuttgart ballet in 1962 and premiered by Ballet West in 2016, Prior to that, in 1988, Ballet West first produced the unique, powerful, version created by Michael Smuin where it became an audience favorite. Michael Smuin , dancer with American Ballet theater and the San Francisco Ballet, was a wildly theatrical choreographer for ballet and the Broadway stage. He was Associate Director for the San Francisco Ballet from 1973 through 1984, and briefly Artistic Director of SFB. He founded his own Smuin Ballet in 1994, before his untimely death in 2007. In 1976, he created this production of Romeo & Juliet for SFB on a shoestring budget and it was an instant success -- the blockbuster that the company needed at the time. The work was a mainstay for SFB for many years and was even filmed for public television in 1978. Former BW artistic director John Hart CBE brought Smuin's production to Ballet West, and the company ran it for nearly nine years. Since that time BW has produced two different versions of R&J-- my predecessor Jonas Kage's own in 2004, and the aforementioned version by John Cranko, which I brought to the company in 2016. I had first seen Smuin’s R&J in San Francisco years ago before it even came to BW, and it stuck with me for my entire career. Its energy and the way Smuin brought out each character made it an exciting theatrical experience. I decided it would be wonderful to revive it for the first time in over 25 years. I worked closely with Celia Fushille the Artistic Director of the Smuin Ballet, to coordinate this revival. Bringing 12
From the Artistic Director back the choreography was easy to accomplish as Ballet West’s Artistic Staff were all former leading artists in this R&J: Pamela Robinson-Harris a notable Lady Capulet; Bruce Caldwell, a great Romeo and Tybalt himself; and, with Calvin Kitten and Arolyn Williams working on the corps, the whole revival team was led by Jane Wood--a wonderful exponent of Juliet. This revival became a big family affair with additional coaching from our School Director Evelyn Cisneros, a former SFB Juliet, and guest appearances by Jeff Rogers, our principal men’s teacher and a former Benvolio and Romeo, and Rachel Viselli a former BW dancer and later Principal artist with SFB. Putting together the sets and costumes was a very different challenge. The sets had been repurposed years ago and were now in many pieces; the costumes in tatters. Additionally, they were now co-owned by Sacramento Ballet. Some pieces were in their warehouse and some in ours. We worked closely with Celia from Smuin Ballet, who was able to find the original model for the set in San Francisco. This became an invaluable blueprint and guide to our crew recreating the scenery. For the costumes, we were blessed to be able to turn to our own brilliant Costume Designer, David Heuvel, who magnificently re-created and re-envisioned them all. Add to this the newly conceived lighting by Jim French, and the result is a vibrant, dynamic telling of William Shakespeare’s classic tale that is at once classic but fresh and new in its look and feel. As with everything this year, it is especially meaningful that we are able to perform live for you. It is a privilege that none of us at Ballet West take lightly. We are honored to bring you this revival. Thank You for your patronage!
Adam Sklute Artistic Director Ballet West
Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company and world premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally sought after teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards, including Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives. Most recently, Sklute was included in Deseret Magazine’s 25 Changemakers of the West for his efforts to build greater equity and inclusion in classical ballet.
From the Executive Director Romeo & Juliet is one of my favorite works in the ballet repertoire, primarily because Prokofiev’s score is (in my humble opinion) the most incredible ballet score ever written. My praise for Romeo & Juliet’s music is not intended as a slight to the great scores Tchaikovsky composed for Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, or The Nutcracker. I absolutely love those works and enjoy them every time I hear them. But Prokofiev has captured something extraordinarily special in Romeo & Juliet, a mixture of pathos, romance, and conflict that keeps audiences riveted to the dance and the plot unfolding on stage. I am particularly excited to see Michael Smuin’s version of Shakespeare’s tale since every Company I have had the honor of leading has performed John Cranko’s choreography, and in fact Ballet West’s Romeo & Juliet, performed in 2016, was Mr. Cranko’s version. Thanks to a partnership with Sacramento Ballet (the co-owner of this production), Ballet West has invested in new sets, drops and props, and David Heuvel has once again worked his magic in designing some costumes and new headpieces for this production. Adam Sklute’s goal of expanding the number of full-length ballets owned by Ballet West is one I have gladly embraced. The more options we have for our audiences, the less frequently we repeat ballets. Furthermore, our productions are also available to rent to other companies, which provides Ballet West with income to maintain our sets and costumes and invest in new productions. As many of you may know, our recent performances of Willam Christensen’s The Nutcracker were resounding artistic and financial successes. Revenue was the highest in more than 25 years, likely aided by the dark stage in December 2020, which created unprecedented demand for this enchanting production that had been performed in America for 75 consecutive years. It is especially heartwarming to see such enthusiasm amidst the current environment, and we are grateful for the outpouring of support from those of you who attended and the many generous donors who sponsored performances. The pandemic has affected all of us, some more profoundly than others. At Ballet West, we have worked hard to balance the health and safety of our employees, and that of our audiences and patrons, with the need to responsibly move forward and share our art with you. We honestly feel we have accomplished that, thanks to the tremendous 14
From the Executive Director efforts of many. Our dancers, orchestra and production staff have embraced our safety protocols thus making these performances possible. Their willingness to partner with us to fulfill our mission amidst these unusual times is difficult to adequately express in words. Our patron services team has worked countless hours reseating patrons and making our audiences feel appreciated and valued. And our Board has fully supported the path Adam and I have chosen during the pandemic with financial and moral support. I could not ask for a better organization of caring, dedicated professionals and volunteers to work with through such an unprecedented period. Romeo and Juliet may die (spoiler alert!) but the resilience of Ballet West will keep this unique and storied company alive for decades to come. Spring will be upon us in a matter of weeks, and so will more performances by Ballet West. Just as spring renews the earth our performances renew the soul. So please join us and share in the beauty of Ballet West’s unique artistry, knowing you had a vital role in bringing it to the stage! With appreciation and gratitude,
Michael Scolamiero Executive Director
Michael Scolamiero joined Ballet West in 2017 after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Mr. Scolamiero previously served as Executive Director of Miami City Ballet for three years, during which time the organization achieved a significant reduction in debt, as well as robust growth in ticket revenue, contributions, and touring income. Prior to Miami City Ballet, Mr. Scolamiero was Pennsylvania Ballet’s Executive Director for 17 years, the longest tenure in the Company’s history and among the longest of any leader of a major ballet company. During his tenure, Mr. Scolamiero led the organization’s first capital campaign that raised $11.9 million (against a $10 million goal) to build an endowment and fund repertoire expansion. At Ballet West, Mr. Scolamiero is set to implement a newly completed strategic plan and excited to guide a growing and robust Company.

Profiles MICHAEL SMUIN
Choreographer
In 1994, Michael Smuin set out to “infuse ballet with the rhythm, speed, and syncopation of American popular culture,” and Smuin Contemporary Ballet (née Smuin Ballets/SF, or more recently, Smuin Ballet) was born. Michael Smuin’s vision lives on following his sudden passing in 2007, and the Company continues to push the boundaries of contemporary ballet within a distinctly modern style, combining classical ballet training, technique, and artistry with uncommon physicality and expression. Company Founder Michael Smuin was born on October 13, 1938, in Missoula, Montana. Smuin studied tap dancing as a child and became instantly enamored with ballet when his mother took him to see the Ballets Russes on tour at the University of Montana. At the age of 15, Smuin moved to Salt Lake City to study dance on scholarship at the University of Utah. A few years later, San Francisco Ballet director Lew Christensen recruited Smuin for San Francisco Ballet, where he danced for six years. Smuin took a leave of absence from the company in 1962 to relocate to New York, where he performed in Bob Fosse’s Little Me on Broadway. During this time, Smuin created a nightclub act with his then-wife and fellow dancer Paula Tracy. Their “well-disguised ballet,” as Smuin would call it, toured widely and was billed alongside such entertainers as Louis Armstrong, Peggy Lee, and Frank Sinatra. The act later appeared on television on The Ed Sullivan Show, The Hollywood Palace, and Bell Telephone Hour, among others. Smuin joined American Ballet Theatre in 1965, where he choreographed Pulcinella Variations, The Catherine Wheel, Eternal Idol and several other pieces for the company before returning to San Francisco in 1973. During his years in New York he also worked with Leonard Bernstein, choreographing Candide. Smuin spent 12 years as a choreographer and co-director of San Francisco Ballet, a period that coincided with his direction of Sophisticated Ladies on Broadway. Smuin served as Artistic Director of San Francisco Ballet until 1985, and was instrumental in raising the company’s profile in the international arts community. His ventures included serving as co-chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts dance panel (1979-1981), staging a performance at the White House, and presenting his Romeo and Juliet and his Emmy Award-winning feature A Song for Dead Warriors for PBS’s Dance in America program. In 1988, Smuin received both a Tony and a Drama Desk Award for his choreography for Anything Goes. Outside of ballet and Broadway, Smuin choreographed several Francis Ford Coppola films, some of which include Rumble Fish, The Cotton Club and Bram Stoker’s Dracula. His choreography can also be seen in such films as A Walk in the Clouds, The Joy Luck Club, The Fantastiks, and Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (Special Edition). Michael Smuin’s ballets are currently in the repertories of major dance companies around the country. After founding Smuin Contemporary American Ballet in 1994, he created ROMEO + JULIET 21-22 SEASON
33
Profiles 40 new works for his company alone. His creations ranged from classical, as seen in his acclaimed September 11th tribute, Stabat Mater (2002), and Carmina Burana (1997), to the innovative Bluegrass/Slyde with its revolving-pole set, to one-act story ballets like Pinocchio (1999) and Zorro (2003). Many of Smuin’s ballet’s boast a touch of Broadway flair, such as his wildly popular Dancin’ With Gershwin (2001) and Fly Me to the Moon (2004). Smuin passed away suddenly on April 23, 2007, surrounded by his dancers while teaching company class. Michael Smuin’s vision, style, and energy remain with the Company to this day. “Essentially, my creative medium consists of bodies, light, and music.” –Michael Smuin
SERGEI PROKOFIEV
Composer
Sergei Prokofiev first received piano instruction from his mother, who also encouraged him to compose. After studying with Glière, he passed the entrance examination at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. There, he studied with Rimsky-Korsakov and Liadov. He also formed a lasting relationship with Sergei Diaghilev, who arranged Prokofiev’s first performance outside Russia (in Rome, in 1915). His opera The Love of the Three Oranges and the Third Piano Concerto both premiered in Chicago in 1921. In Paris, where Prokofiev settled, Diaghilev produced his ballets from 1921-1932. After returning to Russia, Prokofiev composed Peter and the Wolf, the opera War and Peace, and the ballets Romeo and Juliet and Cinderella. His death, on March 5, 1953, was largely overlooked due to the death of Stalin that very same day.
DAVID HEUVEL
Costume Design
David Heuvel continues to have an illustrious career in costume design and production that has taken him to every corner of the globe. Five decades ago, David started as an apprentice at the Opera Theatre in Pretoria, South Africa. He quickly moved up the ranks in the state-run arts organization to become the director of the costume shop for PACT Ballet. In 1979, then-artistic director of Ballet West, Bruce Marks invited David to head the fledgling company’s costume shop. Under Marks, David helped build the reputation of Ballet West from a regional ballet company, to one with international stature. The company was receiving worldwide acclaim, with international tours, daring new works, and notable artistry on stage, from the dancers, and yes, the costumes. The Ballet West costume shop, under David’s direction, is unparalleled. Today, few companies have the luxury of the vast talent and experience that David offers. From cohesive designs with historical accuracy, to the tactile ability to dye garments, David’s costume shop is the definition of full-service. “My philosophy is that the costume must move with the dancer,” says David. “If they touch the stage feeling 34
Profiles comfortable and regal, I have done my job.” Apart from David’s work with Ballet West, he has designed and built costumes for ballet companies both nationally and international, including Ballet Du Nord (France), Alberta Ballet, Ballet Met, Singapore Ballet, Oregon Ballet Theatre, Atlanta Ballet, American Repertory Ballet, Carolina Ballet, Ballet Hawaii, Nashville Ballet, and Ballet Memphis. In December 2018, he received Governor Gary Herbert‘s prestigious Artist Award for Visual Arts.

RACHEL VISELLI
Guest Artist
Rachel began her classical ballet training as a young girl at the Casalino School of Creative Arts in Salt Lake City. She first appeared with Ballet West at the age of eight in The Nutcracker and later performed the lead role as Clara. At fifteen she began training under Willam Christensen (co-founder of Ballet West) and joined the company as an apprentice. Shortly thereafter she was promoted to the main company where she danced for five years. She then accepted a position with the San Francisco Ballet where she quickly rose through the ranks and was awarded a position as Principal dancer. While there, she performed a variety of classical and contemporary works throughout the world. She danced under notable choreographers such as Christopher Wheeldon, William Forsythe, Val Caniparoli,

Profiles CHRISTOPHER SELLARS
Guest Artist
Christopher grew up at his parents' dance school in Huntington Beach, California. In 2005, he was offered a contract with Ballet West II and after one year he was promoted into the company. He quickly rose through the ranks and was eventually promoted to a First Soloist with Ballet West. During a fifteen year career, Christopher has performed countless leading roles, been a regular teacher with the Ballet West Academy, and was Interim Director of Ballet West II for two years. Filled with gratitude, Mr. Sellars retired his duties as a full time dancer with Ballet West in December of 2019 and is now Principal Faculty and Trainee Division Coordinator with Ballet West Academy. In addition to dancing and teaching throughout the years, Christopher is an honored judge for Youth America Grand Prix and his influence on students training extends throughout the country.
