F ROM T H E A RT I S T IC DI R E CTOR Welcome to Cinderella! In 2013, Ballet West was honored to become the second company in America to be given the rights to perform this beautiful and renowned ballet by Sir Frederick Ashton. Now, with this revival I am reminded why it is considered not just a charming and popular fairytale for the entire family, but also an important and seminal classic in the world of ballet. “Sir Fred,” as he was known, created his Cinderella for The Royal Ballet in London in 1948, and it was the first time Sergei Prokofiev’s haunting and magical score had been heard outside of the Soviet Union where it was written. Both Prokofiev and Ashton made this work their homage to the great 19th century classics of Tchaikovsky (Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker) and they each injected the work with raucous humor mixed with a deep sense of longing and sadness. Prokofiev began his composition in 1940 during World War II. The strength of the Soviet Union was rising and he was on shaky ground with the Communist Party. His works were thought to be too reminiscent of imperialism and so he strived to make Cinderella more palatable for the Soviet officials. He created the role of an old beggar woman (who is actually the Fairy Godmother) that Cinderella shows kindness to. He presents nature (represented by the Fairies of the Four Seasons) as a force that can help overcome evil oppression (The Ugly Stepsisters). The Ugly Stepsisters (to be played by men for greater comedic effect) were to represent the overbearing “ruling class”. And finally, the Prince (who is dissatisfied with his materialistic lifestyle) yearns for a simpler life and a lovely woman to share it with. In the end they walk off into the dream of a truer and kinder world to come. But Prokofiev also suffered during the time he was composing Cinderella. The war had disrupted his family and interrupted his composition for years. In 1943 he had been sequestered in The Urals and he was not allowed to see his wife, so his music for this ballet was filled with sadness and loss and this became the ultimate magic of the score. At times comedic and silly, then grand and romantic, Cinderella is infused with a longing and uncertainty that perhaps the best moments of our lives are passing and there is an urgent sense that time is running out. This is what elevates the ballet from fairytale spectacle to a profound statement on humanity and perhaps even a dancer’s life as well. Sir Frederick Ashton, in turn, uses Prokofiev’s grand structure and time motifs to deftly create a ballet that is a pageant, heartfelt love story and also a comedic farce in the manner of the British music halls. He fashioned the roles of the Ugly Step-Sisters on himself and Robert Helpmann (the child-catcher in the movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, among other roles) creating unique characters that are both clownish and sympathetic, loveable monsters that the audience can revile and care about at the same time. He does away with the role of the “Wicked Step-Mother” all together, deciding instead to play up the sibling rivalries. Sir Fred adds a corps de ballet of “Stars” (12 fairies of the hours) who are intricately woven into the action and serve as a continual reminder that time is running out.
16
Ashton’s Cinderella is all about dreams. From Cinderella’s own dream of going to the ball and having a better life, to her father’s reminiscences of his deceased wife, to The Prince’s vision of a perfect woman, and the Step-Sisters’ fantasies of dancing the great ballerina roles. Look for hilarious snippets of Princess Aurora (The Sleeping Beauty), Odette (Swan Lake), Kitri (Don Quixote) and the Sugar Plum Fairy (The Nutcracker) in The Sisters’ Act 2 variations. And while Sir Fred’s ballet remains the classic ragsto-riches story we all know and love, he joins Prokofiev in celebrating the triumph of simplicity over excess. Cinderella is an innocent young woman—natural and unpretentious—she stands in contrast to the Prince’s court which is as corrupt and materialistic as her family’s house. This is gorgeously and subtly presented throughout and is most apparent in the extreme purity of the final pas de deux that Ashton crafts for Cinderella and her Prince. Now she has forgiven her overbearing sisters, her ineffectual father, and—no longer scrutinized by the Prince’s court—the two walk off into a starry night ushered by her Fairy Godmother, the Fairies of the Four Seasons and the 12 Stars of the hours. Cinderella ends quietly yet supremely with a dream of hope. This Cinderella moves me at every level. I laugh uproariously at the comedy, I cry at the sheer beauty and pathos. I am always thoroughly entertained. I hope you too will enjoy what is perhaps one of the greatest works in ballet history. Thank you for your patronage.
Adam Sklute Artistic Director
Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally sought after teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards, including Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and most recently Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives.

F ROM TH E E X ECU TI V E DIR ECTOR Dear Ballet West Family, When I arrived at Ballet West at the beginning of the season, I knew I was taking the helm of a prestigious organization as well as one of the oldest companies in the nation with a storied past and a prodigious pedigree. What I could not have expected was the kindness and graciousness of this company and its many admirers. In just a few months, I’ve quickly grown warm to the cold environs of The Beehive State. Your mountains, your dedication to family, and your embrace of the arts are exhilarating and offer an elevated lifestyle from other places I’ve called home. A few days ago, I found a plaque just a block from the ballet campus that explained how one of the first things Brigham Young built after settling in this valley was a theater. It confirmed a perception I had—that Utahns have a unique, perhaps even inseparable connection to their arts. And not just with our legacy organizations, but with fine arts, architecture, and music. True, this is a state for business and industry, but it is also a state of the arts—that is what makes this place magical. Utahns don’t just buy tickets to see their favorite art forms, they also support them financially. I’m thrilled to report that our $3-million Nutcracker campaign surged past its goal last month. The campaign formally started in late 2015, after the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation generously gave $2 million to renovate the production. The remaining $1 million was raised through sponsorships of scenic pieces, props, and costumes where donors' names were sewn into the garment after it was completed. Two years since construction on this mammoth project began, The Nutcracker opened on December 2 to resounding applause from audiences and great critical acclaim. Although quietly confident it would be an artistic success, we were thrilled nonetheless to see attendance soar past any production since the early 90’s and an aggressive box office goal shattered by nearly 10 percent. To our production team, including wardrobe, costume artists, painters, and prop masters, I give you a heart-felt thank you. To our remarkable dancers and artistic staff—you have earned my sincere admiration. And to Adam Sklute, without whose vision and leadership none of this would have been possible, I am deeply grateful. While the stories we tell are timeless, ballet is ephemeral; it lasts mere moments on stage but those memories can leap through our minds for a lifetime. I for one will never forget my first few months here at Ballet West and the serene beauty I have seen on stage. It is with gratitude to our patrons and donors for your generosity that allow our art form to be eternal, both on stage and in our hearts. To you, our devoted fans, we sincerely thank you. Best Wishes, Michael Scolamiero Executive Director Michael Scolamiero recently joined Ballet West after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Mr. Scolamiero previously served as Executive Director of Miami City Ballet for three years, during which time the organization achieved a significant reduction in debt, as well as robust growth in ticket revenue, contributions, and touring income. Prior to Miami City Ballet, Mr. Scolamiero was Pennsylvania Ballet’s Executive Director for 17 years, the longest tenure in the Company’s history and among the longest of any leader of a major ballet company. During his tenure, Mr. Scolamiero led the organization’s first capital campaign that raised $11.9 million (against a $10 million goal) to build an endowment and fund repertoire expansion. At Ballet West, Mr. Scolamiero is set to implement a newly completed strategic plan and excited to guide a growing and robust Company.

SYNOPSIS
ACT I A room in the house of Cinderella’s father. The Stepsisters are busily preparing for the court ball. Cinderella sits quietly by the fire looking at her mother’s portrait and thinking of happier times. Her father wishes to be kind to her but is afraid of his bad tempered stepdaughters who scold him for comforting Cinderella. Cinderella, using her broom as her dance partner, dreams of dancing with a prince at the ball, creating a lovely solo tinged with sadness and humor. Her dream is interrupted by a beggar-woman who asks for alms. The Stepsisters send her away but Cinderella gives her bread. The old woman leaves, giving Cinderella a kind look. Dressmakers, shoemakers, hairdressers, a jeweler, and a dance master arrive to prepare the Stepsisters for the ball. All but Cinderella leave for the ball. Cinderella returns to her dreams. The old woman re-appears and reveals herself as Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother. She calls on the Fairies of the Four Seasons and their attendants who bring gifts to reward Cinderella for her kindness and prepare her for the ball. Cinderella leaves in a coach escorted by the Seasons and the Stars; the Fairy Godmother warns that she must leave the ball before the clock strikes midnight or all is lost.
ACT II A hall at the palace. Courtiers move in a formal dance and a jester dances alone. Cinderella’s father and the Stepsisters arrive, as does the Prince. Mysterious music is heard. Cinderella arrives and is believed to be a princess. The Prince, enraptured, offers her three rare oranges. The Prince and Cinderella, alone, declare their love for each other. A waltz begins. Enthralled, Cinderella forgets the warning. The clock strikes midnight. Cinderella rushes from the palace, losing a slipper. The Prince holds it and vows to find the woman he loves.
ACT III After the ball. Cinderella awakens. A slipper in her apron proves that she was not dreaming about the ball. The Stepsisters return and tell Cinderella about the ball. Word arrives of the Prince’s search for the owner of the slipper. The Prince enters and the Stepsisters try on the slipper. As Cinderella helps, the second slipper falls from her apron, and the Prince recognizes her. The Fairy Godmother appears and unites the lovers, who live happily ever after.

ABOUT BALLET WEST From Balanchine to Bournonville and Petipa to Tharp, Ballet West boasts a rich and varied repertoire, elegant and versatile artists and an American style and legacy that is as dynamic, expansive and unexpected as the Rocky Mountain region it represents. Ballet West has toured the world several times over, presenting the very best in American classical ballet. Ballet West was established in Salt Lake City in 1963. Willam F. Christensen was the company’s first artistic director, co-founding the company together with Utah’s “First Lady of the Arts” Glenn William Christensen, Founder of Ballet West Walker Wallace. In 1951, Christensen had established the first ballet department in an American university at The University of Utah and with the tireless assistance of Mrs. Enid Cosgriff this program grew into the Utah Civic Ballet, Ballet West’s first incarnation. But this was not the first ballet company Willam Christensen’s founded. Along with his brothers Lew and Harold, Christensen made history by establishing the oldest ballet company in the western United States, the San Francisco Ballet. There he went on to create the first full-length American productions of Coppélia, Swan Lake, and his evergreen production of The Nutcracker, which remains in Ballet West’s repertoire to this day. With 40 company members, 13 second company members, and a thriving academy that trains dancers of all ages, many of whom have gone on to professional careers with Ballet West and companies around the world, Ballet West ranks among the top professional ballet companies in America. Since its inception, the Company has had five artistic directors – its founder Willam Christensen, Bruce Marks, John Hart, Jonas Kåge, and currently Adam Sklute, each of whom has helped to build Ballet West’s unique and expansive profile. For more than 50 years, Willam Christensen and Ballet West have developed and influenced innumerable great artists in the ballet world. Some notable figures include Bart Cook, Finis Jhung, Jay Jolley, Victoria Morgan, Tomm Ruud, Michael Smuin, Richard Tanner, and Kent Stowell. With an eclectic and ever expanding outlook, Ballet West is truly an American pioneer in the world of dance.

IN FOCUS: CIN DER ELLA sir frederick ashton and his cinderella By Joshua Jones
Frederick Ashton and Robert Helpmann rehearsing their roles as the Ugly Sisters in Cinderella, 1965. (Central Press/Pictorial Parade) Sir Frederick Ashton was born in Ecuador in 1904, where his father was a diplomat at the British embassy. As a young boy he saw a performance by the great Anna Pavlova, the principal artist of both the Imperial Russian Ballet and Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. The performance influenced his entire life, but like Billy Elliot, Frederick was strongly encouraged to find another hobby. Years later, he recounted, “My father was horrified. You can imagine the middleclass attitude. My mother would say, ‘he wants to go on the stage.’ She could not bring herself to say ‘into the ballet.’” Ashton was sent to England for schooling but his academics suffered as he turned his attention to dance where he found some success early on. Before he turned 30, he had choreographed almost a half dozen works and also contributed to West End musicals, including The Cat and the Fiddle. He spread his wings further by traveling

to New York in 1934 to choreograph Virgil Thomson’s opera Four Saints in Three Acts. After serving in the Royal Air Force as an intelligence officer during World War II, Ashton choreographed Symphonic Variations for the Sadler’s Wells Ballet, which was a success and brought him worldwide fame. The ballet had just six dancers, led by Margot Fonteyn and Michael Somes. The late historian Montague Haltrecht wrote, “It is a masterpiece created by the Opera House and almost of itself defines a style of English dancing.” He followed Symphonic Variations with his first major three-act ballet for a British company, Cinderella. He considered using Léo Delibes’ Sylvia, but ultimately chose Sergei Prokofiev’s Cinderella, composed in 1944. Like Ashton, Prokofiev had followed Charles Perrault’s version of Cinderella, “what I wished to express above all in the music of Cinderella was the poetic love of Cinderella and
IN FOCUS: CIN DER ELLA the Prince, the birth and flowering of that love, the obstacles in its path and finally the dream fulfilled.” The cast included Moira Shearer as Cinderella and Somes as Prince. Ashton cast himself as a stepsister in drag alongside Robert Helpmann. The role became—and is—a favorite for audiences. New York City ballet critic Laura Jacobs called it “Slapstick of a celestial order,” and was, “struck speechless by this luminous ballet.” After Cinderella, Ashton began to choreograph around the world: Ballet de Paris, New York City Ballet, and back home at the Royal Ballet, where, in 1960 he crafted one of his most celebrated ballets: La Fille mal gardée. Soon after, he was elevated to the directorship of Royal Ballet and

his tenure is considered the Golden Age of the Company. When he retired in 1970, a farewell gala was organized by Michael Somes, John Hart (Ballet West’s third Artistic Director) and Leslie Edwards. Ashton would continue to choreograph short ballets, some of which are still regularly staged today. Ashton was heartbroken after his partner Martyn Thomas died in a car crash in 1985. Ashton passed three years later in his sleep. The rights to Cinderella were willed to Michael Somes, who passed it to his wife, Wendy Ellis Somes, who staged the work at Ballet West.

PROF ILE S Sir Frederick Ashton CHOREOGRAPHER
Founder and choreographer of The Royal Ballet, Sir Frederick Ashton was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador and trained under Leonide Massine and Marie Rambert. He began to choreograph in 1926 (A Tragedy of Fashion for a Hammersmith revue) and, in 1935, became chief choreographer of Vic-Wells (now The Royal Ballet), creating such works as Le Baiser de la fée, Les Patineurs, A Wedding Bouquet, Dante Sonata, Symphonic Variations, Scènes de ballet, Cinderella (first full-length classical ballet), Ondine, La Fille mal gardée, The Two Pigeons, Marguerite and Armande, The Dream, Enigma Variations, and A Month in the Country over a period of 50 years. He distinguished himself as a mime and character dancer in such roles as Carabosse in The Sleeping Beauty and the gigolo in Façade. He was The Royal Ballet’s Principal Choreographer from 1933 to 1970 and Director from 1963 to 1970. Ashton was knighted in 1962. He died in England on August 18, 1988.
Sergei Prokofiev COMPOSER
Prokofiev began his studies with Rimsky-Korsakov at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. Regarded as an enfant terrible his early works shocked audiences because of their modern nature. Audiences grew to appreciate his bold expressions and his Classical Symphony is considered to be a defining work of the neoclassical movement. The Bolsheviks drove Prokofiev from Russia in 1918. He considered their politics to interfere with his composition. His reputation grew in his new homes of America and France as a concert pianist. His decision to return to Stalin’s Soviet Union was marked by only the desire to be in high demand. “In Europe, we all have to fish for performances, cajole conductors, and theatre directors; in Russia, they come to me – I can hardly keep up with the demand…” After his return in 1936, the interference he once fled entered again into his life. In 1948, he was accused by the Soviet Government of formalism and anti-democratic tendencies, thus resulting in a permanent prohibition of his creativity. His death in 1953 was largely overlooked due to the death of Stalin.

PROF ILE S Wendy Ellis Somes PRODUCTION DIRECTOR, SUPERVISOR, AND STAGER
Wendy Ellis was born in Blackburn, England. She won a British Ballet Organization scholarship and trained with Peggy Wilson at the Carlotta School of Ballet, later continuing her training at the Royal Ballet School. She joined The Royal Ballet in 1970 and was promoted to Soloist in 1975, then Principal in 1979. Her talent was such that when still in the corps de ballet she was dancing Princess Florine in The Sleeping Beauty, the Young Girl in The Two Pigeons and Lise in La Fille mal gardée, and later danced leading classical ballet roles such as Juliet, Aurora, Titania, and Cinderella. Other roles included Fairy Spring and Autumn (Cinderella), Golden Hours in Elite Syncopations, Polka in Façade, the pas de trois and second solo in Raymonda Act III, Sunday’s Child and Tuesday’s Child in Jazz Calendar, Katia and Vera in A Month in the Country, Moyna and peasant pas de deux in Giselle, Dora Penny in Enigma Variations, Dark Elegies, the Bride in A Wedding Bouquet, Les Sylphides, My Brother, My Sister, Serenade, Monotones I, Liebeslieder Walzer, and Birthday Offering. Kenneth MacMillan created Princess Stephanie in Mayerling and a role in Gloria on her and she danced in the Company premieres of Agon and Four Schumann Pieces. Margot Fonteyn invited her to dance Lise with David Wall for her 1979 BBC television series ‘The Magic of Dance’, which included footage of rehearsals with husband Michael Somes (former danseur noble and Assistant Director of The Royal Ballet). The same year, Frederick Ashton also created a role for her in his film Stories from a Flying Trunk. After retiring in 1990, she worked closely with Somes through to 1994, staging and producing Ashton’s Symphonic Variations and Cinderella, and is now their owner and custodian. Regarded as an important link in passing down the Ashton tradition and in much demand around the world, she has since staged these ballets in Tokyo, Stockholm, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Sarasota, Amsterdam, Warsaw, and London.

In London, Malin studied Benesh Dance Notation and techniques in staging ballets. Her first assignment was with the Royal Ballet. As artistic staff with the Dutch National Ballet she worked closely with dancers from George Balanchine’s active years. Authorised to stage his ballets, her teaching of Jewels with the Paris Opera Ballet led the artistic director to appoint her Ballet Master. There Malin, staged Balanchine’s works and participated in rehearsing ballets by Ashton, P. Bart, Lacotte, Lifar, McGregor, Millepied, Neumeier, Nureyev and Ratmansky. Her interest in staging Frederick Ashton’s works was triggered by working directly with Michael Somes and Wendy Ellis Somes.
