DIRECTOR’S NOTES

W

hen Fiddler on the Roof was first produced in 1964, the creators feared it might be “too Jewish” to make it on Broadway. How wrong they were! Fiddler has become a classic piece of American musical theatre both because of its universal appeal and its “Jewishness.” The Yiddish stories of Sholem Aleichem—as re-interpreted by Joe Stein, Jerry Bock, and Sheldon Harnick—are not only beautiful, but recall a time for the Jews in Eastern Europe that is oft forgotten in the shadow of the Holocaust. Before the Russian Revolution, the Shtetls of the Pale Settlements in Eastern Europe were home to Jewish communities of 100 to 1,000 residents. As you can see in this musical, these towns had all the requisite types of hard-working people: butchers, bakers, dairymen, Rabbis, matchmakers, etc. The spoken language was Yiddish—a combination of German, Hebrew, and Polish. These settlements were the canvas on which Fiddler was created. There’s so much I can say about the Jewish history and culture and this show—all fascinating and illuminating stuff. I could expound on the timelessness of the piece. How the migrants leaving the Middle East today for Eastern Europe echoes the exodus of Anatevka. I could point out that this show addresses the issue of non-traditional marriage. (Not exactly the expected topic for a family-friendly musical. In 1964!) But I’d rather share this with you: Since moving here to Utah, I find myself talking a lot about family. Not just in terms of family-friendly entertainment, but the value this community puts on family, the family unit, on the appreciation of what our ancestors went through and have to offer us. I’ve felt since I arrived that Fiddler on the Roof is a show with a message that spoke to the values of my new home, while also reflecting the religion and culture that I was raised in. Yente, the Matchmaker, would say “It’s a perfect match!”

Charles Azenberg with his granddaughters Lisa, Julie, me and Allison.

As a child I was taken to see Fiddler by my grandfather, Charles Azenberg, a very proud man who loved his family, and his four granddaughters, and his Jewish heritage. He left Poland or Russia (hard to say which it was officially at the time), to escape the Russians and seek his fortune in England and then America. As I revisit the Sholem Aleichem stories, and Anatveka, in anticipation of this production, I am thinking of my grandfather. He shared this wonderful show with me when I was so young and I am honored to be sharing it with you now. And I hope you will share it with your children and your children’s children. The Painful Truth Pain is an unbidden guest, humanity’s shadow companion down through the ages. It is a despoiler of dreams and a thief. Chronic pain can appear suddenly in a person’s life, changing it forever. Dr. Lynn R. Webster puts a face on chronic pain through the lives of his patients, and provides an intimate view of what it is like to live with it. The Painful Truth will open your eyes to the world of those who are stigmatized and marginalized by our society and healthcare system. Yet the new book offers hope and a path forward for those willing to engage in a crusade against the human race’s primal enemy—pain. “This book gives voice to real people who suffer with chronic pain and to their caregivers. With the wisdom and compassion of a seasoned practitioner, he tells their stories....We would all do well to heed the call of those forced to live with chronic pain. This excellent book is a very good place to start.” —The Rev. George Anthony Hoeltzel, Episcopal priest, Yonkers, New York
