FROM THE STAGE DIRECTOR
It has been said that you can tell if the play you are about to see is a farce by the number of doors on the set. And while we have the requisite number of doors (5) this is not a farce, per se, but a gentle comedy with a cast of very quirky characters that are sure to lift your spirits. Arsenic and Old Lace was first written by Joseph Kesselring based upon a true story about an elderly woman in Connecticut who ran a boarding house whose guests mysteriously died, some say by poison; apparently killed for their money and possessions. While our dear aunties kill off their guests as a charitable work, it does make for some interesting difficulties for their dear nephew Mortimer. Mortimer, based upon the famous NY Times theater critic Brooks Atkinson, must save his dear aunts from certain arrest by claiming his brother Teddy, who thinks he’s Teddy Roosevelt, has done the nasty deeds and buried all the victims in the cellar. To further complicate matters, a third nephew, Jonathan, appears on the scene, accompanied by a dipsomaniac surgeon, with diabolical plans of their own.
One of the most oft-performed comedies in the American canon, Arsenic and Old Lace was a smash hit when it premiered in 1941, running for 1,444 performances. Later, it was turned into the iconic film starring Cary Grant as Mortimer. Originally titled “Bodies in Our Cellar”, the play endured many rewrites by the famous duo of Lindsay and Crouse who were credited only as producers in all later versions. Thank goodness for their astute theatrical adaptation, as we have the delightful script audiences have enjoyed for over 80 years. Arsenic and Old Lace fits firmly in the category of a great American Classic and I am sure you will enjoy the talented cast of crazies we have assembled for your enjoyment.

Shannon began designing for the Grand Theatre as Resident Costume Designer in 2016. Her resident designer position finds her primarily designing for The Grand, however, she has also been fortunate to design for SLAC, the Utah Classical Greek Theater Festival, Westminster College Opera Studio, the U of U, and the Utah Museum of Natural History Children’s Theater Program.
MÁIRE NELLIGAN (Prop Design): received her degrees in theater eons ago and spent some time directing with HerVoice, a feminist theater troupe in Kent, Ohio. During the Arizona years, she also spent time as a firewatch and a ranch hand, as well as an adjunct professor at Cochise Community College. After moving to Utah, Máire worked for SLCC’s Fine Arts department before coming to work for The Grand. She loves being the prop master, and generally considers whichever show she’s currently working on to be her favorite. She will admit, however, that the two “most fun ever” were La Cage aux Folles and Spamalot.
ELLIE OTIS (Asst. Director) has become a Grand regular over the past few years, having assistant directed for Head Over Heels, performed in The 39 Steps (Women/ Clown 1 Swing) and Dead Certain (Adele/ Ensemble), and most recently took over as the social media, marketing, and outreach coordinator for The Grand.
